RESUMEN

Tissue development occurs through a complex interplay between many individual cells. Yet, the fundamental question of how collective tissue behavior emerges from heterogeneous and noisy information processing and transfer at the single-cell level remains unknown. Here, we reveal that tissue scale signaling regulation can arise from local gap-junction mediated cell-cell signaling through the spatiotemporal establishment of an intermediate-scale of transient multicellular communication communities over the course of tissue development. We demonstrated this intermediate scale of emergent signaling using Ca2+ signaling in the intact, ex vivo cultured, live developing Drosophila hematopoietic organ, the lymph gland. Recurrent activation of these transient signaling communities defined self-organized signaling "hotspots" that gradually formed over the course of larva development. These hotspots receive and transmit information to facilitate repetitive interactions with nonhotspot neighbors. Overall, this work bridges the scales between single-cell and emergent group behavior providing key mechanistic insight into how cells establish tissue-scale communication networks.

RESUMEN

Regulation of stem cells requires coordination of the cells that make up the stem cell niche. Here, we describe a mechanism that allows communication between niche cells to coordinate their activity and shape the signaling environment surrounding resident stem cells. Using the Drosophila hematopoietic organ, the lymph gland, we show that cells of the hematopoietic niche, the posterior signaling center (PSC), communicate using gap junctions (GJs) and form a signaling network. This network allows PSC cells to exchange Ca2+ signals repetitively which regulate the hematopoietic niche. Disruption of Ca2+ signaling in the PSC or the GJ-mediated network connecting niche cells causes dysregulation of the PSC and blood progenitor differentiation. Analysis of PSC-derived cell signaling shows that the Hedgehog pathway acts downstream of GJ-mediated Ca2+ signaling to modulate the niche microenvironment. These data show that GJ-mediated communication between hematopoietic niche cells maintains their homeostasis and consequently controls blood progenitor behavior.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer care with incredible reductions in mortality. One of the most devastating complications of treatment is ICI-related pneumonitis (ICI-p). Despite this, little is known regarding risk factors for severe pneumonitis and treatment effectiveness of various therapeutic options for steroid-refractory disease. To address this, we conducted a retrospective study on patients with cancer who developed ICI-p. METHODS: We examined consecutive patients who received ICIs and developed ICI-p. Risk factors of interest for severe disease and steroid-refractory ICI-p, including pre-treatment pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and chest imaging, were compared between patients with severe (grades 3-5) and mild (grades 1-2) pneumonitis. The clinical and treatment courses for patients with steroid-refractory ICI-p were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 132 patients developed ICI-p, with 60 patients having mild and 72 with severe disease. We found that lower forced vital capacity percent predicted (66.24 vs 85.05, P = .05), lower total lung capacity percent predicted (85.23 vs 99.71, P = .13), and specific radiographic patterns on pre-treatment chest imaging were predictors of severe disease. Initial corticosteroid dose of less than 1 milligram per kilogram prednisone equivalent (P = .14) was correlated with partially steroid-responsive or steroid-refractory ICI-p. Ten patients had steroid refractory ICI-p, and those who received IVIG alone as the immune suppressant beyond corticosteroids had improved survival (P = 05). CONCLUSIONS: We are the first to identify pre-treatment PFTs and chest imaging abnormalities as risk factors for severe ICI-p. We also found that lower corticosteroid doses were associated with partially steroid-responsive and steroid-refractory ICI-p. Larger, prospective studies are needed to validate our results.

BACKGROUND: Infographics facilitate rapid information dissemination with enriched eye-catching content on social media, but it is unclear what factors affect the adoption of information presented in this way. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether the Information Acceptance Model applies to infographics on healthy lifestyle and fitness topics. METHODS: Two hundred and four university students were invited to participate in an online survey on their acceptance after reading some healthy lifestyle and fitness topics infographics shared on social media. The data collected were analysed using Partial Least Square path modelling. RESULTS: The results confirmed information usefulness as a predictor of information adoption; attitude towards information and information adoption were the predictors of behavioural intention. Information credibility and attitude towards information, but not information quality and needs, were significantly related to information usefulness. Social media usage and education level were factors affecting infographics impressions. DISCUSSION: Results support most hypotheses. It confirms information usefulness as a predictor of infographics adoption. Attitudes towards information and information adoption are predictors of behavioural intentions of following healthy lifestyle and fitness suggestions through social media infographics. CONCLUSION: Social media facilitates interpersonal communication, information exchange and knowledge sharing, and infographics may draw people into healthy lifestyle and fitness information items relevant to them.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are a first-line treatment for various metastatic solid tumors. Pneumonitis is a potentially devastating complication of ICI treatment and a leading cause of ICI-related mortality. Here, we evaluate whether abnormal pre-treatment pulmonary function tests (PFTs) or interstitial abnormalities on computed tomography of the chest (CT chest) prior to ICI are associated with the development of ICI-pneumonitis (ICI-p). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients who received at least one dose of ICI from 2011 to 2017 at The Ohio State University. Potential risk factors for ICI-p, including abnormal PFTs and CT chest, were recorded. These risk factors were compared between patients with and without pneumonitis. RESULTS: In total, 1097 patients were included, 46 with ICI-p and 1051 without. Ninety percent of patients had pre-treatment chest imaging, while only 10% had pre-treatment PFTs. On multivariable analysis, interstitial abnormalities and reduced total lung capacity (TLC) were significantly associated with development of ICI-p (hazard ratio of 42.42 [95% CI; 15.04-119.67] and hazard ratio of 4.04 [95% CI; 1.32-12.37]), respectively. No other PFT abnormality was associated with increased risk of ICI-p. There was no significant difference in overall survival in patients who did or did not develop ICI-p (p = 0.332). CONCLUSIONS: Pre-existing interstitial abnormalities on CT chest and reduced TLC were strongly associated with developing ICI-p. Prospective studies are warranted to further explore the role of PFTs as a potential tool for identifying patients at highest risk for developing ICI-p.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by acute exacerbations triggered by inhaled allergens, respiratory infections, or air pollution. Ozone (O3), a major component of air pollution, can damage the lung epithelium in healthy individuals. Despite this association, little is known about the effects of O3 and its impact on chronic lung disease. Epidemiological data have demonstrated that elevations in ambient O3 are associated with increased asthma exacerbations. To identify mechanisms by which O3 exposure leads to asthma exacerbations, we developed a two-hit mouse model where mice were sensitized and challenged with three common allergens (dust mite, ragweed and Aspergillus fumigates, DRA) to induce allergic inflammation prior to exposure to O3 (DRAO3). Changes in lung physiology, inflammatory cells, and inflammation were measured. Exposure to O3 following DRA significantly increased airway hyperreactivity (AHR), which was independent of TLR4. DRA exposure resulted in increased BAL eosinophilia while O3 exposure resulted in neutrophilia. Additionally, O3 exposure following DRA blunted anti-inflammatory and antioxidant responses. Finally, there were significantly less monocytes and innate lymphoid type 2 cells (ILC2s) in the dual challenged DRA-O3 group suggesting that the lack of these immune cells may influence O3-induced AHR in the setting of allergic inflammation. In summary, we developed a mouse model that mirrors some aspects of the clinical course of asthma exacerbations due to air pollution and identified that O3 exposure in the asthmatic lung leads to impaired endogenous anti-inflammatory and antioxidant responses and alterations inflammatory cell populations.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are a first-line and perioperative treatment for lung cancer. Pneumonitis is a potentially life-threatening complication of ICI treatment in 2% to 5% of patients; however, risk factors for developing ICI pneumonitis (ICI-p) remain undefined. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients with lung cancer who received at least one dose of ICI from 2015 through 2020 at The Ohio State University. Pneumonitis cases were documented by the treating oncologist and retrospectively evaluated for agreement between an oncologist and a pulmonologist. Patient demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded and summarized between those with and without pneumonitis for the overall cohort. Univariate and multivariable survival analyses using the Fine-Gray competing risk model were used to examine the associations. RESULTS: A total of 471 patients with lung cancer were included, of which 402 had non-small cell lung cancer and 69 had small cell lung cancer; 39 (8%) patients in the overall cohort developed ICI-p. Preexisting interstitial abnormalities and prior chest radiation were both significantly associated with ICI-p on univariate analysis (hazard ratio [HR], 8.91; 95% CI, 4.69-16.92; P<.001; and HR, 2.81; 95% CI, 1.50-5.28; P=.001). On multivariable analyses, interstitial abnormalities remained a strong independent risk factor for ICI-p when controlling for chest radiation and type of immunotherapy (HR, 9.77; 95% CI, 5.17-18.46; P<.001). Among patients with ICI-p (n=39), those with severe (grade 3-5) pneumonitis had worse overall survival compared with those with mild (grade 1 or 2) pneumonitis (P=.001). Abnormal pulmonary function test results at both 12 and 18 months prior to ICI initiation were not significantly associated with ICI-p. CONCLUSIONS: Preexisting interstitial abnormalities on chest CT and prior chest radiation are independent risk factors that are strongly associated with ICI-p in patients with lung cancer. These findings highlight a potential need for closer observation for ICI-p among patients with these risk factors.

Hematopoietic progenitor kinase 1 (HPK1) is regarded as a highly validated target in pre-clinical immune oncology. HPK1 has been described as regulating multiple critical signaling pathway in both adaptive and innate cells. In support of this role, HPK1 KO T cells show enhanced sensitivity to TCR activation and HPK1 KO mice display enhanced anti-tumor activity. Taken together, inhibition of HPK1 has the potential to induce enhanced anti-tumor immune response. Herein, we described the discovery of highly potent HPK1 inhibitors starting form a weak HTS hit. Using a structure-based drug design, HPK1 inhibitors exhibiting excellent cellular single-digit nanomolar potency in both proximal (pSLP76) and distal (IL-2) biomarkers along with sustained elevation of IL-2 cytokine secretion were discovered.

Calcium (Ca2+) ions are a key second messenger involved in the rhythmic excitation and contraction of cardiomyocytes throughout the heart. Proper function of Ca2+-handling proteins is required for healthy cardiac function, whereas disruption in any of these can cause cardiac arrhythmias. This comprehensive review provides a broad overview of the roles of Ca2+-handling proteins and their regulators in healthy cardiac function and the mechanisms by which mutations in these proteins contribute to inherited arrhythmias. Major Ca2+ channels and Ca2+-sensitive regulatory proteins involved in cardiac excitation-contraction coupling are discussed, with special emphasis on the function of the RyR2 macromolecular complex. Inherited arrhythmia disorders including catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia, long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome, short QT syndrome, and arrhythmogenic right-ventricular cardiomyopathy are discussed with particular emphasis on subtypes caused by mutations in Ca2+-handling proteins.

This study investigated how personal characteristics such as generalized trust, self-consciousness and friendship, and desire for self-presentation are related to the subjective well-being of university students who use Twitter in Japan, including the effects of their online communication skills. We conducted a survey in May 2021 with Twitter users and analyzed their log data between January 2019 and June 2021. The log data of 501 Twitter users, including the number of public tweets, retweets, and emotional expressions among different patterns of social media (e.g., Twitter only, Twitter + Instagram, Twitter + LINE + Instagram, etc.) and academic standings, were analyzed using ANOVA and stepwise regression analyses. The results showed that the number of tweets and retweets, with and without photos/videos, increased in 2020 and 2021 compared to 2019, and the ratio of positive sentences remained almost the same for the two-and-a-half-year period of this study. However, the proportion of negative sentences increased slightly. It is clear that the factors which affected the university students' subjective well-being differed depending on the respective patterns of social media use.

BACKGROUND: Wound complication, skin blister formation in particular, causes devastating consequences after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) tries to improve wound management leading to decrease length of hospital stay and better clinical outcomes. Low body mass index (BMI) could play a part in wound recovery management although lacking evidence. This study compared length of hospital stay and clinical outcomes between NPWT and Conventional groups, and factors affected and how BMI affected. METHODS: This was a retrospective clinical record review of 255 (160 NPWT and 95 Conventional) patients between 2018 and 2022. Patient demographics including body mass index (BMI), surgical details (unilateral or bilateral), length of hospital stay, clinical outcomes including skin blisters occurrence, and major wound complications were investigated. RESULTS: Mean age of patients at surgery was 69.95 (66.3% were female). Patients treated with NPWT stayed significantly longer in the hospital after joint replacement (5.18 days vs. 4.55 days; p = 0.01). Significantly fewer patients treated with NPWT found to have blisters (No blisters: 95.0% vs. 87.4%; p = 0.05). In patients with BMI < 30, percentage of patients requiring dressing change was significantly lower when treated with NPWT than conventional (0.8% vs. 33.3%). CONCLUSION: Percentage of blisters occurrence in patients who underwent joint replacement surgery is significantly lower using NPWT. Patients using NPWT stayed significantly longer in the hospital after surgery because significant proportion received bilateral surgery. NPWT patients with BMI < 30 were significantly less likely to change wound dressing.

INTRODUCTION: Popularity of joint replacement surgery due to ever aging population surges the demand for a proper national joint registry. Our Chinese University of Hong Kong - Prince of Wales Hospital (CUHK-PWH) joint registry has passed the 30th year. The aims of this study are 1) summarize our territory-wide joint registry which has passed the 30th year since establishment and 2) compare our statistics with other major joint registries. METHODS: Part 1 was to review the CUHK-PWH registry. Demographic characteristics of our patients who underwent knee and hip replacements had been summarized. Part 2 was a series of comparisons with registries from Sweden, UK, Australia and New Zealand. RESULTS: CUHK-PWH registry captured 2889 primary total knee replacements (TKR) (110 (3.81%) revision) and 879 primary total hip replacements (THR) (107 (12.17%) revision). Median Surgery time of TKR was shorter than THR. Clinical outcome scores were much improved after surgery in both. Uncemented of hybrid in TKR were most popular in Australia (33.4%) and 40% in Sweden and UK. More than half of TKR and THR patients showed the highest percentage with ASA grade 2. New Zealand reflected the best cumulative percentage survival 20 years after surgery of 92.2%, 76.0%, 84.2% survivorship 20 years after TKR, unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) and Hip. CONCLUSION: A worldwide accepted patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) is recommended to develop to make comparisons among registries and studies feasible. Completeness of registry data is important and useful to improve surgical performance through data comparisons from different regions. Funding from government on sustaining registries is reflected. Registries from Asian countries have yet to be grown and reported.

Social media use is widely accepted in higher education, connecting students' learning with daily life. Considering the potential of social media to revolutionize the whole spectrum of teaching and learning, this study examines social media usage of business school students of different majors and their perception of social media as learning aids through a quantitative online survey guided by the 5E instructional model, with 423 valid responses from students majoring in accounting, finance, and economics. Results indicated that respondents perceived social media as influential in helping them access study-related information. It facilitated comprehensive learning, information access, information sharing, and student communication with instructors. Significant differences in perceptions of using social media as aids for business learning were found among students of different demographics, including gender, education level, and residence, but not quite for different majors. While various studies have examined the use of social media in education, scant studies focus on business school students under the lens of the 5E instructional model, especially Asians.

BACKGROUND: Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a frequent cause of respiratory failure in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and results in significant morbidity and mortality. ARDS often develops as a result of a local or systemic inflammatory insult. Cancer can lead to systemic inflammation but whether cancer is an independent risk factor for developing ARDS is unknown. We hypothesized that critically ill cancer patients admitted to the ICU were at increased risk for the diagnosis of ARDS. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of critically ill patients admitted between July 2017 and December 2018 at an academic medical center in Columbus, Ohio. The primary outcome was the association of patients with malignancy and the diagnosis of ARDS in a multivariable logistic regression model with covariables selected a priori informed through the construction of a directed acyclic graph. RESULTS: 412 ARDS cases were identified with 166 of those patients having active cancer. There was an association between cancer and ARDS, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.55 (95% CI 1.26-1.92, P < 0.001). When adjusted for our pre-specified confounding variables, the association remained statistically significant (OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.15-2.13, P = 0.004). In an unadjusted pre-specified subgroup analysis, hematologic malignancy (OR 1.81, 95% CI 1.30-2.53, P < 0.001) was associated with increased odds of developing ARDS while non-metastatic solid tumors (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.31-0.85, P = 0.01) had statistically significant negative association. Cancer patients with ARDS had a significantly higher ICU (70.5% vs 39.8%, P < 0.001) and hospital (72.9% vs 40.7%, P < 0.001) mortality compared to ARDS patients without active malignancy. CONCLUSION: In this single center retrospective cohort study, cancer was found to be an independent risk factor for the diagnosis of ARDS in critically ill patients. To our knowledge, we are the first report an independent association between cancer and ARDS in critically ill patients.

BACKGROUND: A patient-reported outcome (PRO) tool which reflects the outcomes of patients underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are important to be "ceiling effect free" which commonly used PRO tools face. Forgotten joint score-12 (FJS-12) has been proved to reduce or even free from ceiling effect. FJS-12 has been translated to different languages. The objectives of this study are to validate FJS-12 in Traditional Chinese-Hong Kong language and look for the goodness of FJS-12 still exist in this language adapted FJS-12 version. METHODS: FJS-12 was administered to 75 patients whose majority was obese underwent TKA between September 2019 and March 2020. Patients completed 3 sets of questionnaires (FJS-12, Oxford Knee Score (OKS), and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS)) twice, 2 weeks apart. Reliability, internal consistency, responsiveness, test-retest agreement and discriminant validity were evaluated. RESULTS: Reliability of FJS-12 showed moderate to excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.870). Test-retest reliability of FJS-12 was good (ICC = 0.769). Bland-Altman plot showed good test-retest agreement. Construct validity in terms of correlations between FJS-12 and OKS, and FJS-12 and NRS were moderate at baseline (Pearson's coefficient r = 0.598) and good at follow-up (r = 0.879). Smallest detectable change (Responsiveness) was higher than MIC. Floor effect was none observed, and ceiling effect was low. Discriminant validity was found to have no significance. BMI (obesity) did not affect FJS-12 outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The Traditional Chinese-Hong Kong version of FJS-12 showed good test-retest reliability, validity, responsiveness, BMI non-specific, with no floor and low ceiling effects for patients who underwent TKA. Sub-culture differences in individual PRO tools should be considered in certain ethnicities and languages.

The aim of this paper is to describe a technique that can be utilised for the targeted correction of the Whistle Deformity and accompanying upper lip subunits. All patients were post-primary cleft lip repair, either unilateral or bilateral cleft lips, with a resulting Whistle Deformity post-operatively. They all elected to undergo surgical correction of the Whistle Deformity using bilateral philtral dermofascial flaps to correct their Whistle Deformity. Post-operative clinical photographs demonstrate the results of the technique. We assessed for the resolution of the Whistle Deformity and improvement of the appearance of the upper lip subunits, including; philtral, columella, and nostril sill elements. The patients treated with this technique, with Whistle Deformities following unilateral and bilateral cleft lip repair, had satisfactory results from the procedure and recovered with no complications. We propose this is an effective method for treating up to moderate-severe Whistle deformities following both unilateral and bilateral primary cleft lip repairs.

Treatment of tendon injuries is challenging. To develop means to augment tendon regeneration, we have previously prepared a soluble, low immunogenic (DNA-free), tendon extracellular matrix fraction (tECM) by urea extraction of juvenile bovine tendons, which is capable of enhancing transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) mediated tenogenesis in human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). Here, we aimed to elucidate the mechanism of tECM-driven hASC tenogenic differentiation in vitro, focusing on the integrin and TGF-ß/SMAD pathways. Our results showed that tECM promoted hASC proliferation and tenogenic differentiation in vitro based on tenogenesis-associated markers. tECM also induced higher expression of several integrin subunits and TGF-ß receptors, and nuclear translocation of p-SMAD2 in hASCs. Pharmacological inhibition of integrin-ECM binding, focal adhesion kinase (FAK) signaling, or TGF-ß signaling independently led to compromised pro-tenogenic effects of tECM and actin fiber polymerization. Additionally, integrin blockade inhibited tECM-driven TGFBR2 expression, while inhibiting TGF-ß signaling decreased tECM-mediated expression of integrin α1, α2, and ß1 in hASCs. Together, these findings suggest that the strong pro-tenogenic bioactivity of tECM is regulated via integrin/TGF-ß signaling crosstalk. Understanding how integrins interact with signaling by TGF-ß and/or other growth factors (GFs) within the tendon ECM microenvironment will provide a rational basis for an ECM-based approach for tendon repair.

Transitional composition between two thin-film morphologies of the block copolymer, polystyrene-block-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PS-b-PtBuA), was investigated using near-field infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy mechanical measurements. These techniques allowed block identification with nanoscale spatial resolution and elucidated the material's sub-surface composition. PS was found to form coronae around the PtBuA block in spherical valleys on flat areas of the film, and coronae of PtBuA surrounding the PS lamellae were observed at the edge of the polymer film, where parallel lamellae are formed. Furthermore, we found that the peak position and width varied by location, which may be a result of block composition, chain tension, or substrate interaction.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia often accompanies osteoarthritis (OA), which is managed by total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the late stage. Recent studies have suggested a higher risk of post-operative complications after TKA in sarcopenic OA subjects, but whether TKA can benefit them similar to non-sarcopenic subjects remains unexplored. This study aimed to examine the dynamic, mutual impact of sarcopenia and TKA in a one-year post-operative period. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted between 2015 to 2018 at our hospital. Patients with end-stage OA of the knee waiting for TKA were recruited into the study. Primary outcome measures were change in muscle strength, mass and function. Secondary outcome measures were quality of life (QOL) measurements for pain, psychological and physical health. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients were recruited, of which 79.3% were female and 32.8% already had sarcopenia at baseline. The average age of sarcopenic subjects and non-sarcopenic subjects was comparable (67.89 ± 7.07 vs. 67.92 ± 6.85; p = 0.99), but sarcopenic subjects had a lower body mass index (BMI) (25.64 ± 2.64 vs. 28.57 ± 4.04; p = 0.01). There was a statistically significant improvement in walking speed (10.24 ± 5.35 vs. 7.69 ± 2.68, p < 0.01) and muscle strength in both sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic patients after TKA. This was accompanied by an improvement trend in muscle mass in all subjects. There was no change in handgrip power before and after TKA and subsequent follow-up (19.31 ± 5.92 vs. 18.98 ± 6.37 vs. 19.36 ± 7.66; p = 0.97). QOL measured before, after and at follow-up with WOMAC (total: 42.27 ± 15.98 vs. 20.65 ± 15.24 vs. 16.65 ± 18.13) and SF12v2 (PCS: 33.06 ± 8.55 vs. 38.96 ± 8.01 vs. 40.67 ± 7.93) revealed progressive significant improvement (both comparisons p ≤ 0.01). Further analysis with the IPAQ also found increased engagement of high-intensity activities. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that sarcopenia among patients with end-stage OA of the knee is not uncommon, but both sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic OA patients achieved significant clinical and functional improvement after TKA. Further studies with a larger sample size and different ethnicities could help ascertain a beneficial role of TKA in sarcopenic OA subjects. BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty with ceramic-on-ceramic articulation aims to decrease wear, osteolysis, and aseptic loosening. A metal-backed ceramic liner was developed to reduce the risk of liner fracture. However, a significant number of cases of mal-seating of the metal-backed ceramic liner were observed in the 2000s, and there were concerns about their outcome. This review aims to investigate the long-term performance of the mal-seated ceramic liner. METHODS: From July 2003 to March 2007, 35 ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasties were performed with the Trident acetabular system. Clinical assessment, radiological analysis, and outcome assessment were performed. The prevalence of liner mal-seating and its long-term outcomes were investigated. RESULTS: There was liner mal-seating in 8 hips (22.9%). One liner was exchanged in the early postoperative period. No revision surgery was required for the remaining 7 hips at a mean follow-up of 14 years. All patients were free of hip pain with a mean Harris Hip Score of 94.7 at the most recent follow-up. No adverse event was observed. CONCLUSION: The long-term outcomes of the mal-seated liner were favorable. However, surgeons should exercise meticulous surgical technique to achieve a properly aligned liner within the acetabular shell to minimize this potentially correctable error.
