RESUMEN

Lung cancer in East Asia is characterized by a high percentage of never-smokers, early onset and predominant EGFR mutations. To illuminate the molecular phenotype of this demographically distinct disease, we performed a deep comprehensive proteogenomic study on a prospectively collected cohort in Taiwan, representing early stage, predominantly female, non-smoking lung adenocarcinoma. Integrated genomic, proteomic, and phosphoproteomic analysis delineated the demographically distinct molecular attributes and hallmarks of tumor progression. Mutational signature analysis revealed age- and gender-related mutagenesis mechanisms, characterized by high prevalence of APOBEC mutational signature in younger females and over-representation of environmental carcinogen-like mutational signatures in older females. A proteomics-informed classification distinguished the clinical characteristics of early stage patients with EGFR mutations. Furthermore, integrated protein network analysis revealed the cellular remodeling underpinning clinical trajectories and nominated candidate biomarkers for patient stratification and therapeutic intervention. This multi-omic molecular architecture may help develop strategies for management of early stage never-smoker lung adenocarcinoma.

Tumor-associated macrophages are composed of distinct populations arising from monocytes or tissue macrophages, with a poorly understood link to disease pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that mouse monocyte migration was supported by glutaminyl-peptide cyclotransferase-like (QPCTL), an intracellular enzyme that mediates N-terminal modification of several substrates, including the monocyte chemoattractants CCL2 and CCL7, protecting them from proteolytic inactivation. Knockout of Qpctl disrupted monocyte homeostasis, attenuated tumor growth and reshaped myeloid cell infiltration, with loss of monocyte-derived populations with immunosuppressive and pro-angiogenic profiles. Antibody targeting of the receptor CSF1R, which more broadly eliminates tumor-associated macrophages, reversed tumor growth inhibition in Qpctl-/- mice and prevented lymphocyte infiltration. Modulation of QPCTL synergized with anti-PD-L1 to expand CD8+ T cells and limit tumor growth. QPCTL inhibition constitutes an effective approach for myeloid cell-targeted cancer immunotherapy.

As an essential nutrient element, phosphorus (P) is primarily acquired and translocated as inorganic phosphate (Pi) by plant roots. Pi is often sequestered in the soil and becomes limited for plant growth. Plants have developed a sophisticated array of adaptive responses, termed P starvation responses, to cope with P deficiency by improving its external acquisition and internal utilization. Over the past 2 to 3 decades, remarkable progress has been made toward understanding how plants sense and respond to changing environmental P. This review provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms that regulate or coordinate P starvation responses, emphasizing P transport, sensing, and signaling. We present the major players and regulators responsible for Pi uptake and translocation. We then introduce how P is perceived at the root tip, how systemic P signaling is operated, and the mechanisms by which the intracellular P status is sensed and conveyed. Additionally, the recent exciting findings about the influence of P on plant-microbe interactions are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and prospects concerning the interplay between P and other nutrients and strategies to enhance P utilization efficiency are discussed. Insights obtained from this knowledge may guide future research endeavors in sustainable agriculture.

Human genetics and preclinical studies have identified key contributions of TREM2 to several neurodegenerative conditions, inspiring efforts to modulate TREM2 therapeutically. Here, we characterize the activities of three TREM2 agonist antibodies in multiple mixed-sex mouse models of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathology and remyelination. Receptor activation and downstream signaling are explored in vitro, and active dose ranges are determined in vivo based on pharmacodynamic responses from microglia. For mice bearing amyloid-ß (Aß) pathology (PS2APP) or combined Aß and tau pathology (TauPS2APP), chronic TREM2 agonist antibody treatment had limited impact on microglia engagement with pathology, overall pathology burden, or downstream neuronal damage. For mice with demyelinating injuries triggered acutely with lysolecithin, TREM2 agonist antibodies unexpectedly disrupted injury resolution. Likewise, TREM2 agonist antibodies limited myelin recovery for mice experiencing chronic demyelination from cuprizone. We highlight the contributions of dose timing and frequency across models. These results introduce important considerations for future TREM2-targeting approaches.Significance Statement Multiple TREM2 agonist antibodies are investigated in mouse models of Alzheimer's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Despite agonism in culture models and after acute dosing in mice, antibodies do not show benefit in overall AD pathology and worsen recovery after demyelination.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of collagen derivatives for osteoarthritis. DESIGN: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched till June 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating collagen derivatives for treating osteoarthritis. Data were independently extracted by two authors. The risk of bias was assessed using the RoB 2 tool. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed within a frequentist framework. The certainty of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations approach. RESULTS: A total of 35 RCTs involving 3165 patients were included. The main analysis of the primary outcome was based on 25 RCTs involving 2856 patients. Collagen derivatives exerted small-to-moderate effects on pain alleviation (standardized mean difference [SMD] -0.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.48 to -0.22, moderate certainty) and function improvement (SMD -0.31, 95%CI -0.41 to -0.22, high certainty) compared with the control. Collagen derivatives were safe; they did not increase the risk of withdrawal or adverse events compared with the control. The trial sequential analyses indicated that this study had sufficient statistical power for deriving definitive conclusions, confirming the robustness of our findings. CONCLUSIONS: Strong evidence supports the efficacy and safety of collagen derivatives for osteoarthritis treatment.

BACKGROUND: Limited research has investigated the relationship between small airway dysfunction (SAD) and static lung hyperinflation (SLH) in patients with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) especially dyspnea and fatigue. METHODS: 64 patients with PASC were enrolled between July 2020 and December 2022 in a prospective observational cohort. Pulmonary function tests, impulse oscillometry (IOS), and symptom questionnaires were performed two, five and eight months after acute infection. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to test the association between SLH and patient-reported outcomes. RESULTS: SLH prevalence was 53.1% (34/64), irrespective of COVID-19 severity. IOS parameters and circulating CD4/CD8 T-cell ratio were significantly correlated with residual volume to total lung capacity ratio (RV/TLC). Serum CD8 + T cell count was negatively correlated with forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) with statistical significance. Of the patients who had SLH at baseline, 57% continued to have persistent SLH after eight months of recovery, with these patients tending to be older and having dyspnea and fatigue. Post-COVID dyspnea was significantly associated with SLH and IOS parameters R5-R20, and AX with adjusted odds ratios 12.4, 12.8 and 7.6 respectively. SLH was also significantly associated with fatigue. CONCLUSION: SAD and a decreased serum CD4/CD8 ratio were associated with SLH in patients with PASC. SLH may persist after recovery from infection in a substantial proportion of patients. SAD and dysregulated T-cell immune response correlated with SLH may contribute to the development of dyspnea and fatigue in patients with PASC.

BACKGROUND: The visual cortex is involved in the generation of migraine aura. Voxel-based multivariate analyses applied to this region may provide complementary information about aura mechanisms relative to the commonly used mass-univariate analyses. METHODS: Structural images constrained within the functional resting-state visual networks were obtained in migraine patients with (n = 50) and without (n = 50) visual aura and healthy controls (n = 50). The masked images entered a multivariate analysis in which Gaussian process classification was used to generate pairwise models. Generalizability was assessed by five-fold cross-validation and non-parametric permutation tests were used to estimate significance levels. A univariate voxel-based morphometry analysis was also performed. RESULTS: A multivariate pattern of grey matter voxels within the ventral medial visual network contained significant information related to the diagnosis of migraine with visual aura (aura vs. healthy controls: classification accuracy = 78%, p < 0.001; area under the curve = 0.84, p < 0.001; migraine with aura vs. without aura: classification accuracy = 71%, p < 0.001; area under the curve = 0.73, p < 0.003). Furthermore, patients with visual aura exhibited increased grey matter volume in the medial occipital cortex compared to the two other groups. CONCLUSIONS: Migraine with visual aura is characterized by multivariate and univariate patterns of grey matter changes within the medial occipital cortex that have discriminative power and may reflect pathological mechanisms.

The aggressive nature and poor prognosis of lung cancer led us to explore the mechanisms driving disease progression. Utilizing our invasive cell-based model, we identified methylthioadenosine phosphorylase (MTAP) and confirmed its suppressive effects on tumorigenesis and metastasis. Patients with low MTAP expression display worse overall and progression-free survival. Mechanistically, accumulation of methylthioadenosine substrate in MTAP-deficient cells reduce the level of protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5)-mediated symmetric dimethylarginine (sDMA) modification on proteins. We identify vimentin as a dimethyl-protein whose dimethylation levels drop in response to MTAP deficiency. The sDMA modification on vimentin reduces its protein abundance but trivially affects its filamentous structure. In MTAP-deficient cells, lower sDMA modification prevents ubiquitination-mediated vimentin degradation, thereby stabilizing vimentin and contributing to cell invasion. MTAP and PRMT5 negatively correlate with vimentin in lung cancer samples. Taken together, we propose a mechanism for metastasis involving vimentin post-translational regulation.

The semiconductor industry has claimed that perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), a persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), has been eliminated from semiconductor production; however, information about the use of alternative compounds remains limited. This study aimed to develop a nontarget approach to discovering diverse PFAS substitutions used in semiconductor manufacturing. A distinct fragment-based approach has been established to identify the hydrophobic and hydrophilic features of acidic and neutral fluorosurfactants through fragments and neutral losses, including those outside the homologous series. Ten sewage samples from 5 semiconductor plants were analyzed with target and nontarget analysis. Among the 20 identified PFAS spanning 12 subclasses, 15 were reported in semiconductor sewage for the first time. The dominant identified PFAS compounds were C4 sulfonamido derivatives, including perfluorobutane sulfonamido ethanol (FBSE), perfluorobutane sulfonamide (FBSA), and perfluorobutane sulfonamido diethanol (FBSEE diol), with maximum concentrations of 482 µg/L, 141 µg/L, and 83.5 µg/L in sewage, respectively. Subsequently, three ultrashort chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) were identified in all samples, ranging from 0.004 to 19.9 µg/L. Three effluent samples from the associated industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were further analyzed. This finding, that the C4 sulfonamido acetic acid series constitutes a significant portion (65%-82%) of effluents from WWTP3 and WWTP4, emphasizes the conversion of fluorinated alcohols to fluorinated acids during aerobic treatment. The identification of the intermediate metabolites of FBSEE diol, further supported by our laboratory batch studies, prompts the proposal of a novel metabolic pathway for FBSEE diol. The total amount of perfluorobutane sulfonamido derivatives reached 1934 µg/L (90%), while that of PFAAs, which have typically received attention, was only 205 µg/L (10%). This suggests that perfluorobutane sulfonamido derivatives are emerging as a new trend in fluorosurfactants used in the semiconductor industry, serving as PFAS precursors and contributing to the release of their metabolites into the environment.

OTULIN (OTU deubiquitinase with linear linkage specificity) removes linear polyubiquitin from proteins that have been modified by LUBAC (linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex) and is critical for preventing auto-inflammatory disease1,2 and embryonic lethality during mouse development3. Here we show that OTULIN promotes rather than counteracts LUBAC activity by preventing its auto-ubiquitination with linear polyubiquitin. Thus, knock-in mice that express catalytically inactive OTULIN, either constitutively or selectively in endothelial cells, resembled LUBAC-deficient mice4 and died midgestation as a result of cell death mediated by TNFR1 (tumour necrosis factor receptor 1) and the kinase activity of RIPK1 (receptor-interacting protein kinase 1). Inactivation of OTULIN in adult mice also caused pro-inflammatory cell death. Accordingly, embryonic lethality and adult auto-inflammation were prevented by the combined loss of cell death mediators: caspase 8 for apoptosis and RIPK3 for necroptosis. Unexpectedly, OTULIN mutant mice that lacked caspase 8 and RIPK3 died in the perinatal period, exhibiting enhanced production of type I interferon that was dependent on RIPK1. Collectively, our results indicate that OTULIN and LUBAC function in a linear pathway, and highlight a previously unrecognized interaction between linear ubiquitination, regulators of cell death, and induction of type I interferon.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of corticosteroid (CS) injection methods for frozen shoulder. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched up to May 6, 2023. STUDY SELECTION: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated CS injection methods for frozen shoulder were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Data were extracted independently by 2 authors. Risk of bias was assessed using the RoB 2 tool. DATA SYNTHESIS: A random-effects network meta-analysis was performed within a frequentist framework. The certainty of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations approach. A total of 66 RCTs involving 4491 patients were included. For short-term outcomes, 4-site injection (vs placebo [PLA]: standardized mean difference [SMD]=-2.20, 95% confidence interval [CI], -2.81 to -1.59 in pain; SMD=2.02; 95% CI, 1.39-2.65 in global function) was the most effective (low certainty). Rotator interval injection was the optimal treatment with moderate to high certainty (vs PLA: SMD=-1.07, 95% CI, -1.51 to -0.64 in pain; SMD=0.94, 95% CI, 0.49-1.40 in global function). For midterm outcomes, 4-site injection was most effective (vs PLA: SMD=-1.71, 95% CI, -2.41 to -1.01 in pain; SMD=2.22, 95% CI, 1.34-3.09 in global function; low certainty). Distension via rotator interval (D-RI) was the optimal treatment with moderate to high certainty (vs PLA: SMD=-1.10, 95% CI, -1.69 to -0.51 in pain; SMD=1.46, 95% CI, 0.73-2.20 in global function). Distension and intra-articular injection via anterior or posterior approaches produced effects equivalent to those of rotator interval injection and D-RI. CONCLUSIONS: Rotator interval injection, distension, and intra-articular injection had equivalent effects on symptom relief. More RCTs are required to validate the superiority of multisite injections.

Deoxyshikonin (DSK) is a biological component derived from Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Although DSK possesses potential anticancer activities, whether DSK exerts anticancer effects on cervical cancer cells is incompletely explored. This study was aimed to investigate the anticancer activity of DSK against cervical cancer cells and its molecular mechanisms. Cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay. Level of phosphorylation and protein was determined using Western blot. Involvement of signaling kinases was assessed by specific inhibitors. Our results revealed that DSK reduced viability of human cervical cell in a dose-dependent fashion. Meanwhile, DSK significantly elicited apoptosis of HeLa and SiHa cells. Apoptosis microarray was used to elucidate the involved pathways, and the results showed that DSK dose-dependently diminished cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein 1 (cIAP1), cIAP2, and XIAP, and induced cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and caspase-8/9/3. Furthermore, we observed that DSK significantly triggered activation of ERK, JNK, and p38 MAPK (p38), and only inhibition of p38 diminished the DSK-mediated pro-caspases cleavage. Taken together, our results demonstrate that DSK has anti-cervical cancer effects via the apoptotic cascade elicited by downregulation of IAPs and p38-mediated caspase activation. This suggests that DSK could act as an adjuvant to facilitate cervical cancer management.

High-temperature-requirement protein A (HtrA) family proteins play important roles in controlling protein quality and are recognized as virulence factors in numerous animal and human bacterial pathogens. The role of HtrA family proteins in plant pathogens remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the HtrA family protein, DegQ, in the crucifer black rot pathogen Xanthomonas campestris pathovar campestris (Xcc). DegQ is essential for bacterial attachment and full virulence of Xcc. Moreover, the degQ mutant strain showed increased sensitivity to heat treatment and sodium dodecyl sulfate. Expressing the intact degQ gene in trans in the degQ mutant could reverse the observed phenotypic changes. In addition, we demonstrated that the DegQ protein exhibited chaperone-like activity. Transcriptional analysis displayed that degQ expression was induced under heat treatment. Our results contribute to understanding the function and expression of DegQ of Xcc for the first time and provide a novel perspective about HtrA family proteins in plant pathogen.

Although concurrent chemoradiotherapy is the cornerstone of treatment for locally advanced or recurrent uterine cervical cancer, treatment fails at a high rate. Therefore, the development of novel targeting agents is critical. This study investigated the action of CLEFMA, a potent, synthetic curcumin derivative, on cervical cancer cells and its mechanism of action. We found that CLEFMA negatively regulated the viability of cervical cancer cells, involving induction of cell apoptosis. Cleaved caspase-3, cleaved poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase, cleaved caspase-8, and cleaved caspase-9 expression were increased by treatment with CLEFMA. After U0126 (ERK1/2 inhibitor) and SB203580 (p38 inhibitor) were applied as cotreatment with CLEFMA, the expression of cleaved caspase-8, -9, and -3 was reduced significantly. In conclusion, CLEFMA activates both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways through ERK1/2 and p38 signal transduction in cervical cancer cells.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disease affecting dopaminergic (DA) neurons, is characterized by decline of motor function and cognition. Dopaminergic cell loss is associated with accumulation of toxic alpha synuclein aggregates. As DA neuron death occurs late in the disease, therapeutics that block the spread of alpha synuclein may offer functional benefit and delay disease progression. To test this hypothesis, we generated antibodies to the C terminal region of synuclein with high nanomolar affinity and characterized them in in vitro and in vivo models of spread. Interestingly, we found that only antibodies with high affinity to the distal most portion of the C-terminus robustly reduced uptake of alpha synuclein preformed fibrils (PFF) and accumulation of phospho (S129) alpha synuclein in cell culture. Additionally, the antibody treatment blocked the spread of phospho (S129) alpha synuclein associated-pathology in a mouse model of synucleinopathy. Blockade of neuronal PFF uptake by different antibodies was more predictive of in vivo activity than their binding potency to monomeric or oligomeric forms of alpha synuclein. These data demonstrate that antibodies directed to the C-terminus of the alpha synuclein have differential effects on target engagement and efficacy. Furthermore, our data provides additional support for the development of alpha synuclein antibodies as a therapeutic strategy for PD patients.

In drug development, preclinical safety and pharmacokinetics assessments of candidate drugs to ensure the safety profile are a must. While in vivo and in vitro tests are traditionally used, experimental determinations have disadvantages, as they are usually time-consuming and costly. In silico predictions of these preclinical endpoints have each been developed in the past decades. However, only a few web-based tools have integrated different models to provide a simple one-step platform to help researchers thoroughly evaluate potential drug candidates. To efficiently achieve this approach, a platform for preclinical evaluation must not only predict key ADMET (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) properties but also provide some guidance on structural modifications to improve the undesired properties. In this review, we organized and compared several existing integrated web servers that can be adopted in preclinical drug development projects to evaluate the subject of interest. We also introduced our new web server, Virtual Rat, as an alternative choice to profile the properties of drug candidates. In Virtual Rat, we provide not only predictions of important ADMET properties but also possible reasons as to why the model made those structural predictions. Multiple models were implemented into Virtual Rat, including models for predicting human ether-a-go-go-related gene (hERG) inhibition, cytochrome P450 (CYP) inhibition, mutagenicity (Ames test), blood-brain barrier penetration, cytotoxicity and Caco-2 permeability. Competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) represents a novel mechanism of gene regulation that controls several biological and pathological processes. Recently, an increasing number of in silico methods have been developed to accelerate the identification of such regulatory events. However, there is still a need for a tool supporting the hypothesis that ceRNA regulatory events only occur at specific miRNA expression levels. To this end, we present an R package, ceRNAR, which allows identification and analysis of ceRNA-miRNA triplets via integration of miRNA and RNA expression data. The ceRNAR package integrates three main steps: (i) identification of ceRNA pairs based on a rank-based correlation between pairs that considers the impact of miRNA and a running sum correlation statistic, (ii) sample clustering based on gene-gene correlation by circular binary segmentation, and (iii) peak merging to identify the most relevant sample patterns. In addition, ceRNAR also provides downstream analyses of identified ceRNA-miRNA triplets, including network analysis, functional annotation, survival analysis, external validation, and integration of different tools. The performance of our proposed approach was validated through simulation studies of different scenarios. Compared with several published tools, ceRNAR was able to identify true ceRNA triplets with high sensitivity, low false-positive rates, and acceptable running time. In real data applications, the ceRNAs common to two lung cancer datasets were identified in both datasets. The bridging miRNA for one of these, the ceRNA for MAP4K3, was identified by ceRNAR as hsa-let-7c-5p. Since similar cancer subtypes do share some biological patterns, these results demonstrated that our proposed algorithm was able to identify potential ceRNA targets in real patients. In summary, ceRNAR offers a novel algorithm and a comprehensive pipeline to identify and analyze ceRNA regulation. Sudden death, or unexpected natural death of a healthy individual, is a serious problem in all nations. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) mainly due to ischemic heart diseases is the top cause of sudden death. However, there are pathophysiological conditions, referred to as sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, in which no apparent lesion can be identified even after complete conventional or ordinary autopsy. While postmortem genetic analyses have accumulated evidence about underlying genetic abnormality in such cases, the precise relationships between genetic background and the phenotype have been largely elusive. In this study, a retrospective investigation of 17 autopsy cases in which lethal arrhythmia was suspected to be the cause of death was carried out. Genetic analysis focusing on 72 genes reported to be associated with cardiac dysfunctions was performed, in combination with detailed histopathological and postmortem imaging examination, and a family study. As a result, in two cases of suspected arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), we found a nonsense variant in PKP2 and frameshift variant in TRPM4 gene. In contrast, the other 15 cases showed no morphological changes in the heart despite the presence of a frameshift variant and several missense variants, leaving the clinical significance of these variants obscure. The findings of the present study suggest that nonsense and frameshift variants could be involved in the morphological abnormality in cases of SCD due to ACM, while missense variants alone rarely contribute to massive structural changes in the heart.

The current state of the COVID-19 pandemic is a global health crisis. To fight the novel coronavirus, one of the best-known ways is to block enzymes essential for virus replication. Currently, we know that the SARS-CoV-2 virus encodes about 29 proteins such as spike protein, 3C-like protease (3CLpro), RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), Papain-like protease (PLpro), and nucleocapsid (N) protein. SARS-CoV-2 uses human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) for viral entry and transmembrane serine protease family member II (TMPRSS2) for spike protein priming. Thus in order to speed up the discovery of potential drugs, we develop DockCoV2, a drug database for SARS-CoV-2. DockCoV2 focuses on predicting the binding affinity of FDA-approved and Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) drugs with the seven proteins mentioned above. This database contains a total of 3,109 drugs. DockCoV2 is easy to use and search against, is well cross-linked to external databases, and provides the state-of-the-art prediction results in one site. Users can download their drug-protein docking data of interest and examine additional drug-related information on DockCoV2. Furthermore, DockCoV2 provides experimental information to help users understand which drugs have already been reported to be effective against MERS or SARS-CoV. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of skin diseases among prisoners in Taiwan has rarely been investigated. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of skin diseases by sex in a sample of prisoners in Taiwan. METHODS: We included 83,048 participants from the National Health Insurance Program. The outcomes were measured using the clinical version of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision. For prevalence, we presented absolute values as well as percentages. We also conducted an X2 test to assess sex differences and age group differences in the percentages of skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases. RESULTS: The prevalence of skin diseases was 42.25%, higher than that in the general population. The prevalence of skin diseases among male prisoners was higher than that among female prisoners (p < 0.001), and the prevalence of skin diseases among prisoners who were ≤ 40 was higher than that among prisoners who were > 40. Among all cases diagnosed with skin disease, the top three diseases were contact dermatitis and other types of eczema, cellulitis and abscess, pruritus, and related conditions. Male prisoners had a significantly higher prevalence of all types of skin diseases than female prisoners. CONCLUSIONS: Skin diseases are common in prisoners in Taiwan. Therefore, early prevention and appropriate treatment are needed. Male-specific skin products are also needed, given the differences in the prevalence of skin diseases among male and female prisoners.
