RESUMEN

Controlling topological phases of light allows the observation of abundant topological phenomena and the development of robust photonic devices. The prospect of more sophisticated control with topological photonic devices for practical implementations requires high-level programmability. Here we demonstrate a fully programmable topological photonic chip with large-scale integration of silicon photonic nanocircuits and microresonators. Photonic artificial atoms and their interactions in our compound system can be individually addressed and controlled, allowing the arbitrary adjustment of structural parameters and geometrical configurations for the observation of dynamic topological phase transitions and diverse photonic topological insulators. Individual programming of artificial atoms on the generic chip enables the comprehensive statistical characterization of topological robustness against relatively weak disorders, and counterintuitive topological Anderson phase transitions induced by strong disorders. This generic topological photonic chip can be rapidly reprogrammed to implement multifunctionalities, providing a flexible and versatile platform for applications across fundamental science and topological technologies.

BACKGROUND: As a pivotal pathway of programmed cell death, necroptosis significantly contributes to the pathogenesis of respiratory disorders. However, its role in asthma is not yet fully elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to identify markers associated with necroptosis, evaluate their functions in asthma, and explore potential therapeutic agents targeting necroptosis for the management of asthma. METHODS: Firstly, machine learning algorithms, including Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine-Recursive Feature Elimination (SVM-RFE), were utilized to identify necroptosis-related differentially expressed genes (NRDEGs) in asthma patients compared to healthy controls. Concurrently, the expression of NRDEGs was validated using external datasets, Western blot, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Secondly, the clinical relevance of NRDEGs was assessed through Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and correlation with clinical indicators. Thirdly, the relationship between NRDEGs and pulmonary immune cell infiltration, as well as the signaling interactions between different cells types, were analyzed through immune infiltration and single-cell analysis. Fourthly, Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), were conducted to elucidate the functional roles of NRDEGs. Finally, compounds targeting NRDEGs were screened, and their binding affinities were evaluated using molecular docking studies. RESULTS: In asthma, necroptosis is activated, leading to the identification of four NRDEGs: NLRP3, PYCARD, ALOX15, and VDAC3. Among these, NLRP3, PYCARD, and ALOX15 are upregulated, whereas VDAC3 is downregulated in asthma. Comprehensive clinical evaluations indicated that NRDEGs hold diagnostic value for asthma. Specifically, NLRP3 was inversely correlated with forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC), while VDAC3 showed an inverse correlation with sputum neutrophils. Conversely, ALOX15 expression was positively correlated with fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels, as well as sputum eosinophils, blood eosinophils, and blood IgE levels. Subsequent immune infiltration analysis revealed associations between NRDEGs and activated dendritic cells, mast cells, and eosinophils. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) further confirmed the communication signals between myeloid dendritic cells, fibroblasts, neutrophils, and helper T cells, predominantly related to fibrosis and immune-inflammatory responses. Pathway enrichment analysis demonstrated that NRDEGs are involved in ribosomal function, oxidative phosphorylation, and fatty acid metabolism. Finally, resveratrol and triptonide were identified as potential therapeutic agents targeting the proteins encoded by NRDEGs for asthma treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The necroptosis pathway is activated in asthma, with NRDEGs-namely PYCARD, NLRP3, ALOX15, and VDAC3-correlated with declines in lung function and airway inflammation. These genes serve as reliable predictors of asthma risk and are involved in the regulation of the immune-inflammatory microenvironment. Resveratrol and triptolide have been identified as promising therapeutic candidates due to their potential to target the proteins encoded by these genes.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) on the progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) through neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in the tumor immune microenvironment. METHODS: The expression of NETs-related markers was identified through immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and Western blotting in different clinical stages of OSCC samples. The relationship between NETs-related markers and clinicopathological characteristics in 180 samples was analyzed using immunohistochemistry data. Furthermore, the ability to predict the prognosis of OSCC patients was determined by ROC curve analysis and survival analysis. The effect of P. gingivalis on the release of NETs was identified through immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry, both in vitro and in vivo. CAL27 and SCC25 cell lines were subjected to NETs stimulation to elucidate the influence of NETs on various cellular processes, including cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis in vitro. Furthermore, the impact of NETs on the growth and metastatic potential of OSCC was assessed using in vivo models involving tumor-bearing mice and tumor metastasis mouse models. RESULTS: Immunochemistry analysis revealed a significant correlation between the NETs-related markers and clinical stage, living status as well as TN stage. P. gingivalis has demonstrated its ability to effectively induce the release of NETs both in vivo and in vitro. NETs have the potential to facilitate cell migration, invasion, and colony formation. Moreover, in vivo experiments have demonstrated that NETs play a pivotal role in promoting tumor metastasis. CONCLUSION: High expression of NETs-related markers demonstrates a strong correlation with the progression of OSCC. Inhibition of the NETs release process stimulated by P. gingivalis and targeted NETs could potentially open up a novel avenue in the field of immunotherapy for patients afflicted with OSCC.

In this study, CuFe2O4/CuS composite photocatalysts were successfully synthesized for the activation of peroxynomosulfate to remove ciprofloxacin from wastewater. The structural composition and morphology of the materials were analyzed by XRD, SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of the samples were tested by an electrochemical workstation. The band gap of the samples was calculated by DFT and compared with the experimental values. The effects of different catalysts, oxidant PMS concentrations, and coexisting ions on the experiments were investigated. The reusability and stability of the photocatalysts were also investigated. The mechanism of the photocatalytic degradation process was proposed based on the free radical trapping experiment. The results show that the p-p heterojunction formed between the two contact surfaces of the CuFe2O4 nanoparticle and CuS promoted the charge transfer between the interfaces and inhibited the recombination of electrons and holes. CuFe2O4-5/CuS photocatalyst has the best catalytic activity, and the removal rate of ciprofloxacin is 93.7%. The intermediates in the degradation process were tested by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and the molecular structure characteristics of ciprofloxacin were analyzed by combining with DFT calculations. The possible degradation pathways of pollutants were proposed. This study reveals the great potential of the photocatalyst CuFe2O4/CuS in the activation of PMS for the degradation of ciprofloxacin wastewater.

Piezoelectric composite materials (PCMs) with shunt damping circuits are used widely in hydroacoustics because of the flexible adjustability of their parameters. PCMs offer good underwater sound absorption, but shortcomings remain, such as poor low-frequency sound absorption, narrow bandwidth, and a single dissipation mechanism. In this paper, the tunable underwater sound absorption of a 0-3 PCM combined with a cavity structure and shunt circuit (PCMC) is studied systematically. First, the equivalent material parameters of 0-3 PCM are derived based on the Yamada model, and then a theoretical electroacoustic model is established for solving the absorption coefficient and is mutually verified with the numerical simulation method. On this basis, the tunable absorption characteristics of the structure are analyzed. The results show that coupling the energy dissipation mechanism of 0-3 PCM with the acoustic mechanism of the cavity structure not only achieves strong absorption at lower frequencies but also enriches the absorption mode in the mid-high frequencies by connecting the shunt circuits. Moreover, the influence of piezoelectric control variables and acoustic cavity morphology characteristics on structural sound absorption performance is further explored. Finally, the acoustic performance of PCMC is improved further via shape optimization and parameter optimization.

BACKGROUNDS: The hybrid-type nasolabial fold is a special, complex type of nasolabial fold with various causes, making it difficult to obtain an ideal effect with a single treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effect and complications of a comprehensive therapy combining microliposuction, radiofrequency, and fat grafting on hybrid-type nasolabial folds. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients aged 27 to 45 (mean: 34.71±5.41) years, who underwent the therapy for hybrid-type nasolabial folds were retrospectively analyzed. All patients were followed up for 12 months. Two independent observers conducted postoperative follow-ups at 1 week and 12 weeks. One week postoperatively, the hematoma, mass nodule, and skin scald ecchymosis scores were 1.24±0.43, 1.62±0.58, and 1.48±0.59, respectively. At 12 weeks, the scores of mass nodules and skin scald ecchymosis decreased (1.19±0.39 and 1.05±0.21, respectively) without obvious hematoma. The WSRS grade decreased from 4.33±0.47 to 2.19±0.39 (P<0.001), and the hybrid-type nasolabial folds significantly improved. The Face-Q scale score was 20.43±2.63 points (standard score: 85.12±10.95 points). 76.19% of the patients scored more than 80 points in the subjective Face-Q evaluation. CONCLUSION: Microliposuction and radiofrequency combined with fat grafting effectively treats hybrid-type nasolabial folds, resulting in high patient satisfaction. Most complications can be prevented, and optimal outcomes can be obtained by comprehensive surgical methods and correct procedures, which is thus worthy of clinical promotion.

BACKGROUND: Autophagy is a cellular self-protection mechanism. The upregulation of adipose-derived stem cells' (ADSCs) autophagy can promote fat graft survival. However, the effect of interfering with adipocyte autophagy on graft survival is still unknown. In addition, autophagy is involved in adipocyte dedifferentiation. We investigated the effect of autophagy on adipocyte dedifferentiation and fat graft survival. METHODS: The classic autophagy regulatory drugs rapamycin (100 nM) and 3-methyladenine (3-MA; 10 mM) were used to treat adipocytes, adipocyte dedifferentiation was observed, and their effects on ADSCs were detected. In our experiments, 100 nM rapamycin, 10 mM 3-MA and saline were mixed with human adipose tissue and transplanted into nude mice. At 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks postoperatively, the grafts were harvested for histological and immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: Rapamycin and 3-MA can promote and inhibit adipocyte dedifferentiation by regulating autophagy. Both drugs can inhibit ADSC proliferation, and 10 mM 3-MA can inhibit ADSC adipogenesis. At weeks 8 and 12, the volume retention rate of the rapamycin group (8 weeks, 64.77% ± 6.36%; 12 weeks, 56.13% ± 4.73%) was higher than the control group (8 weeks, 52.62% ± 4.04%; P < 0.05; 12 weeks, 43.17% ± 6.02%; P < 0.05) and the rapamycin group had more viable adipocytes and better vascularization. Compared with the control group, the volume retention rate, viable adipocytes and vascularization of the 3-MA group decreased. CONCLUSIONS: Rapamycin can promote adipocyte dedifferentiation by upregulating autophagy to promote fat graft survival. 3-MA can inhibit graft survival, but its mechanism includes the inhibition of adipocyte dedifferentiation and ADSC proliferation and adipogenesis. Brassicanate A sulfoxide, a secondary metabolite of broccoli, exhibited the inhibition of weed growth, but its mechanism of action on weeds remains unclear. To elucidate the mechanism by which brassicanate A sulfoxide suppresses weeds, this study explores the interaction between brassicanate A sulfoxide and the photosystem II D1 protein through molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. This research demonstrates that brassicanate A sulfoxide interacts with the photosystem II D1 protein by forming hydrogen bonds with Phe-261 and His-214. The successful expression of the photosystem II D1 protein in an insect cell/baculovirus system validated the molecular docking and dynamics simulations. Biolayer interferometry experiments elucidated that the affinity constant of brassicanate A sulfoxide with photosystem II was 2.69 × 10-3 M, suggesting that brassicanate A sulfoxide can stably bind to the photosystem II D1 protein. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the mode of action of brassicanate A sulfoxide and also aid in the development of natural-product-based photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicides.

BACKGROUND: Enhancing graft fat survival remains a paramount challenge in autologous fat transplantation surgeries. Dedifferentiated fat cells (DFATs) and adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) represent 2 pivotal cells with potential to improve fat graft survival rates. OBJECTIVES: In this study we aimed to compare the effectiveness of DFATs and ASCs in promoting fat graft survival, emphasizing their adipogenic and angiogenic capabilities. METHODS: Both in vitro and in vivo experiments were conducted. In vitro assessments compared adipogenesis, angiogenesis, osteogenesis, chondrogenesis, cell migration abilities, and surface markers. For in vivo evaluation, a cell-assisted lipotransfer animal model was employed to gauge graft volume retention and histological morphology. Analysis techniques included hematoxylin and eosin staining, Western blotting, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: In vitro findings suggested a slight superiority of DFATs in adipogenesis and angiogenesis compared to ASCs. In vivo tests demonstrated both cell types surpassed the control in terms of graft volume retention, with the DFATs group marginally outperforming in retention rates and the ASC group presenting a slightly enhanced graft tissue structure. CONCLUSIONS: Our study underscores the distinct advantages of DFATs and ASCs in bolstering fat graft survival, offering potentially novel insights for plastic surgeons aiming to elevate fat graft survival rates.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of concentrated growth factor (CGF) combined with sodium hyaluronate (SH) on temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA). METHODS: Sixty patients with TMJOA who were diagnosed by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) between March 2020 and March 2023 at the Stomatological Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University were randomly divided into a control group (n = 30) and an experimental group (n = 30). The patients in the experimental group were treated with CGF + SH, and those in the control group were treated with SH only. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score indicating pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) area; the Helkimo Clinical Dysfunction Index (Di); and changes in condylar CBCT at the first visit and 2 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after treatment were recorded. The CBCT data of the patients in the experimental and control groups were collected, and the three-dimensional CBCT image sequences were imported into Mimics Medical 19.0 software in DICOM format for condylar reconstruction. RESULTS: The VAS scores at 2 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after treatment were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (P < 0.05), and the pain in the experimental group was significantly relieved. The Di was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (P < 0.05), and the clinical function of the TMJ improved. After treatment, the CBCT score was significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group (P < 0.05), and the condylar bone cortex was obviously repaired. Observation of the condylar bone cortex by three-dimensional reconstruction showed the same results as those obtained by CBCT. CONCLUSION: CGF combined with SH is effective in the treatment of TMJOA and can improve muscle pain, TMJ pain, Impaired TMJ function, Impaired range of movement, Pain on movement of the mandible and promote bone repair. BACKGROUND: Allergic asthma is largely dominated by Th2 lymphocytes. Micropeptides in Th2 cells and asthma remain unmasked. Here, we aimed to demonstrate a micropeptide, T-cell regulatory micropeptide (TREMP), in Th2 cell differentiation in asthma. METHODS: TREMP translated from lincR-PPP2R5C was validated using Western blotting and mass spectrometry. TREMP knockout mice were generated using CRISPR/Cas9. Coimmunoprecipitation revealed that TREMP targeted pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase 1 (PYCR1), which was further explored in vitro and in vivo. The levels of TREMP and PYCR1 in Th2 cells from clinical samples were determined by flow cytometry. RESULTS: TREMP, encoded by lincR-PPP2R5C, was in the mitochondrion. The lentivirus encoding TREMP promoted Th2 cell differentiation. In contrast, Th2 differentiation was suppressed in TREMP-/- CD4+ T cells. In the HDM-induced model of allergic airway inflammation, TREMP was increased in pulmonary tissues. Allergic airway inflammation was relieved in TREMP-/- mice treated with HDM. Mechanistically, TREMP interacted with PYCR1, which regulated Th2 differentiation via glycolysis. Glycolysis was decreased in Th2 cells from TREMP-/- mice and PYCR1-/- mice. Similar to TREMP-/- mice, allergic airway inflammation was mitigated in HDM-challenged PYCR1-/- mice. Moreover, we measured TREMP and PYCR1 in asthma patients. And we found that, compared with those in healthy controls, the levels of TREMP and PYCR1 in Th2 cells were significantly increased in asthmatic patients. CONCLUSIONS: The micropeptide TREMP encoded by lincR-PPP2R5C promoted Th2 differentiation in allergic airway inflammation by interacting with PYCR1 and enhancing glycolysis. Our findings highlight the importance of neglected micropeptides from noncoding RNAs in allergic diseases.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations have decreased in the past decade. The adverse effects of acute PM2.5 exposure on respiratory diseases have been well recognized. To explore the long-term effects of PM2.5 exposure on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mice were exposed to PM2.5 for 7 days and rest for 21 days, followed by challenges with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE). Unexpectedly, PM2.5 exposure and rest alleviated the disease severity and airway inflammatory responses in COPD-like mice. Although acute PM2.5 exposure increased airway inflammation, rest for 21 days reversed the airway inflammatory responses, which was associated with the induction of inhibitory memory alveolar macrophages (AMs). Similarly, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM2.5 exposure and rest decreased pulmonary inflammation, accompanied by inhibitory memory AMs. Once AMs were depleted, pulmonary inflammation was aggravated. PAHs in PM2.5 promoted the secretion of IL-33 from airway epithelial cells via the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)/ARNT pathway. High-throughput mRNA sequencing revealed that PM2.5 exposure and rest drastically changed the mRNA profiles in AMs, which was largely rescued in IL-33-/- mice. Collectively, our results indicate that PM2.5 may mitigate pulmonary inflammation, which is mediated by inhibitory trained AMs via IL-33 production from epithelial cells through the AhR/ARNT pathway. We provide the rationale that PM2.5 plays complicated roles in respiratory disease.

Atomically thin narrow-bandgap layered PdSe2has attracted much attention due to its rich and unique electrical properties. For silicon-compatible device integration, direct wafer-scale preparation of high-quality PdSe2thin film on a silicon substrate is highly desired. Here, we present the low-temperature synthesis of large-area polycrystalline PdSe2films grown on SiO2/Si substrates by plasma-assisted metal selenization and investigate their charge carrier transport behaviors. Raman analysis, depth-dependent x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy were used to reveal the selenization process. The results indicate a structural evolution from initial Pd to intermediate PdSe2-xphase and eventually to PdSe2. The field-effect transistors fabricated from these ultrathin PdSe2films exhibit strong thickness-dependent transport behaviors. For thinner films (4.5 nm), a record high on/off ratio of 104was obtained. While for thick ones (11 nm), the maximum hole mobility is about 0.93 cm2V-1S-1, which is the record high value ever reported for polycrystalline films. These findings suggest that our low-temperature-metal-selenized PdSe2films have high quality and show great potential for applications in electrical devices.

The research and development of absorbing materials with high absorbing capacity, wide effective absorption bandwidth, and lightweight has always been interesting. In this research, a facile hydrothermal method was used to prepare MnFe2O4, and the grain size of MnFe2O4 decreased with increasing hydrothermal temperature. When the size of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles is less than 10 nm, its quantum size effect and surface effect make its electromagnetic microwave absorption performance greatly optimized. When the thickness of MnFe2O4-110 °C is 2.57 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) is -35.28 dB. Based on this, light porous diatomite and a three-dimensional polyaniline network are introduced. Diatomite is used as the base material to effectively reduce the agglomeration of MnFe2O4 quantum dots. The relatively high surface area introduced by a three-dimensional network of polyaniline promotes the orientation, interfacial polarization, multiple relaxation, and impedance matching, thereby generating further dielectric loss. Additionally, the magnetic properties of manganese ferrite and the strong electrical conductivity of polyaniline play an appropriate complementary role in electromagnetic wave absorption. The RLmin of MnFe2O4/PANI/diatomite is -56.70 dB at 11.12 GHz with an absorber layer thickness of 2.57 mm. The effective frequency bandwidth (RL < -10 dB) ranges from 9.21 to 18.00 GHz. The absorption mechanism indicates that the high absorption intensity is the result of the synergistic effect of impedance matching, conduction losses, polarization losses, and magnetic losses.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbations reduce the patient's quality of life and are also responsible for significant disease burdens and economic costs. Machine learning (ML)-based prediction models have been increasingly developed to predict asthma exacerbations in recent years. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify the prediction performance of ML-based prediction models for asthma exacerbations and address the uncertainty of whether modern ML methods could become an alternative option to predict asthma exacerbations. METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched for studies published up to December 15, 2022. Studies that applied ML methods to develop prediction models for asthma exacerbations among asthmatic patients older than five years and were published in English were eligible. The prediction model risk of bias assessment tool (PROBAST) was utilized to estimate the risk of bias and the applicability of included studies. Stata software (version 15.0) was used for the random effects meta-analysis of performance measures. Subgroup analyses stratified by ML methods, sample size, age groups, and outcome definitions were conducted. RESULTS: Eleven studies, including 23 prediction models, were identified. Most of the studies were published in recent three years. Logistic regression, boosting, and random forest were the most used ML methods. The most common important predictors were systemic steroid use, short-acting beta2-agonists, emergency department visit, age, and exacerbation history. The overall pooled area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) of 11 studies (23 prediction models) was 0.80 (95% CI 0.77-0.83). Subgroup analysis based on different ML models showed that boosting method achieved the best performance, with an overall pooled AUROC of 0.84 (95% CI 0.81-0.87). CONCLUSION: This study identified that ML was the potential tool to achieve great performance in predicting asthma exacerbations. However, the methodology within these models was heterogeneous. Future studies should focus on improving the generalization ability and practicability, thus driving the application of these models in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Some adipocytes undergo dedifferentiation after fat transplantation, and this may affect the survival of fat grafts. However, this effect has not been adequately studied. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the effect of promoting the dedifferentiation of mature adipocytes on the survival of fat grafts. METHODS: Mature adipocytes and adipose stem cells (ASCs) were treated with OSI-906 (a specific inhibitor of insulin receptor and insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor) in vitro, and then the dedifferentiation of mature adipocytes and the proliferation of ASCs were evaluated. In the in vivo experiment, human lipoaspirates mixed with phosphate-buffered saline (Group A) or OSI-906 (Group B) were compared in nude mice. Grafts were harvested at 2, 8, and 12 weeks, and volume retention rate, histologic, and immunohistochemical analyses were conducted. RESULTS: OSI-906 can promote the dedifferentiation of mature adipocytes and inhibit the proliferation of ASCs. At 12 weeks, Group B showed a better volume retention rate (mean [standard deviation, SD], 62.3% [7.61%]) than group A (47.75% [6.11%]) (P < .05). Moreover, viable adipocytes and vascularization showed greater improvement in Group B than in Group A. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that promoting the dedifferentiation of mature adipocytes can improve the survival rate and quality of fat grafts.

MicroRNA168 (MIR168) is a key miRNA that targets the main RNA-induced silencing complex component Argonaute 1 (AGO1) to regulate plant growth and environmental stress responses. However, the regulatory functions of MIR168 need to be further elucidated in rice. In this paper, we generated clean OsMIR168a deletion mutants by CRISPR-Cas9 strategy. We then phenotypically and molecularly characterized these mutants. The rice OsMIR168a mutants grew rapidly at the seedling stage, produced more tillers and matured early. Compared to the wild-type plants, the mutants were shorter at maturity and produced smaller spikelets and seeds. Analysis of gene expression showed that the transcription levels of OsMIR168a's target genes such as OsAGO1a, OsAGO1b and OsAGO1d were elevated significantly in the OsMIR168a mutants. Intriguingly, OsAGO18, a member of a new AGO clade that is conserved in monocots, was confirmed to be a target of OsMIR168a not only by informatic prediction but also by expression analysis and a cell-based cleavage assay in the OsMIR168a mutants. Many protein-coding genes and miRNAs showed differential expression in the OsMIR168a mutants, suggesting OsMIR168a exerts a major transcriptional regulatory role, likely through its potential target genes such as OsAGO1s and OsAGO18. KEGG enrichment analysis of these differentially expressed genes pointed to OsMIR168a's involvement in important processes such as plant hormone signalling transduction and plant-pathogen interaction. These data collectively support that the complex regulation module of OsMIR168a-OsAGO1/OsAGO18-miRNAs-target genes contributes to agronomically important traits, which sheds light on miRNA-mediated crop breeding.

A facile and efficient approach to the synthesis of 1,2,5-trisubstituted imidazoles is developed via a multicomponent reaction under metal-free catalysis. Under Brønsted acid catalysis, the desired products can be obtained from readily available vinyl azides, aromatic aldehydes, and aromatic amines without generating any toxic waste. The convenient operations and high functional group compatibility indicate that this approach offers an attractive alternative method for the synthesis of imidazole derivatives.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx over V2O5-based oxide catalysts has been widely used, but it is still a challenge to efficiently reduce NOx at low temperatures under SO2 and H2O co-existence. Herein, SO2- and H2O-tolerant catalytic reduction of NOx at a low temperature has been originally demonstrated via engineering polymeric VOx species by CeO2. The polymeric VOx species were tactfully engineered on Ce-V2O5 composite active sites via the surface occupation effect of Ce, and the obtained catalysts exhibited remarkable low-temperature activity and strong SO2 and H2O tolerance at 250 °C. The strong interaction between Ce and V species induced the electron transfer from V to Ce and tuned the SCR reaction via the E-R pathway between the NH4+/NH3 species and gaseous NO. In the presence of SO2 and H2O, the polymeric VOx species had not been hardly influenced, while the formation of sulfate species on Ce sites not only promoted the adsorption of NH4+ species and the reaction between gaseous NO and NH4+ but also facilitated the decomposition of ammonium bisulfate through weakening the strong bond between HSO4- and NH4+. This work provided a new strategy for SO2- and H2O-tolerant catalytic reduction of NOx at a low temperature.

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of peripheral early-staged lung cancer and benign lesions, segmentectomy and wedge resection are both reliable treatment methods. It is debatable that how much pulmonary function will be lost after different sublobar resection in the treatment of early-staged deep-located peripheral NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer). The purpose of this study was to explore postoperative pulmonary function changes of sublobar resection in enrolled patients with non-subpleural peripheral nodules. METHODS: We collected clinical data of patients undergoing VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) segmentectomy or wedge resection for single nodule. These nodules were confirmed as peripheral non-subpleural nodules by preoperative 3D imaging. Patients were divided into two groups according to the operation procedure. Demographic characteristics, pulmonary function, postoperative outcomes, and others were collected. All data was gathered at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University. Outcomes after wedge resection were compared with those after segmentectomy resection. RESULTS: A total of 88 patients were included in this study, including 46 patients with VATS wedge resection and 42 patients with VATS segmentectomy. No difference was detected when comparing FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 s) loss between these two groups (17.6 ± 2.1%, wedge resection vs. 19.4 ± 5.4%, segmentectomy, P = 0.176). FVC (forced vital capacity) loss (8.7 ± 2.3%, wedge resection vs. 17.1 ± 2.2%, segmentectomy, P < 0.001) and MVV (maximum ventilatory volume) loss (11.5 ± 3.1%, wedge resection vs. 20.6 ± 7.8%, segmentectomy, P < 0.001) in segmentectomy group was significantly higher than those in wedge resection group. Discrepancies were investigated when comparing duration of surgery (70 ± 22 min, wedge resection vs. 111 ± 52 min, segmentectomy, P = 0.0002), postoperative drainage (85 ± 45 mL, wedge resection vs. 287 ± 672 mL, segmentectomy, P = 0.0123), and treatment hospitalization expenses [35148 ± 889CNY, wedge resection vs. 52,502 (38,276-57,772) CNY, segmentectomy, P < 0.0002]. No significant difference was found between air leak time (1.7 ± 0.7 days, wedge resection vs. 2.5 ± 1.7 days, segmentectomy, P = 0.062) and hospitalization time (2.7 ± 0.7 days, wedge resection vs. 3.5 ± 1.7 days, segmentectomy, P = 0.051). CONCLUSIONS: For patients with peripheral non-subpleural nodules, we observed that patients who underwent wedge resection had less lung function loss than those who underwent segmentectomy when their lung function was reviewed at the 6th month after surgery. Patients undergoing wedge resection had partial advantages over patients with segmental resection in terms of hospitalization cost, operation time and postoperative drainage, etc. Wedge resection, as a treatment for peripheral non-subpleural pulmonary nodules, seemed to have more advantages in preserving patients' pulmonary function.
