RESUMEN

The Monsoon Intra-Seasonal Oscillations in the Bay of Bengal (MISO-BOB) field campaign was conducted in the Indian Ocean during the 2018 and 2019 summer monsoon seasons. WC-130J aircraft of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron of the US Air Force participated in the campaign in June 2018. The dropsonde observations across a tropical supercluster showed zonal wind variations in association with the structure of the convectively coupled Kelvin wave (CCKW). Within the supercluster, easterlies (westerlies) were observed in the upper (lower) troposphere; this transformation occurred just below the 0[Formula: see text] C level. The cold pool had an easterly component throughout, and it was coldest (by 2.5[Formula: see text] C) at the center of the supercluster, deepest ([Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]) at its rear/western end, and shallowest ([Formula: see text] 300 m) at the front/eastern end. The level of free convection (LFC) at the front end was at [Formula: see text] altitude. At the eastern flank of the supercluster, zonal convergence in the lower troposphere occurred between 500-1500 m levels above the surface between the westerlies within the supercluster and opposing ambient easterlies. Thus, the uplifting of conditionally unstable air parcels above LFC to the east of the supercluster was likely to occur due to this convergence rather than the cold pool influence. Conversely, the western flank of the supercluster had low-level zonal divergence. These observations support the notion of 'self-similarity' among the mesoscale convective systems and large-scale waves.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Assess attitudes toward prenatal diagnosis (PND) and termination of pregnancy (TOP) for Down syndrome (DS), hemophilia, lethal autosomal recessive disorder (LRD) and a hypothetical late-onset neurodegenerative disorder (NDD) among healthcare workers in one Sri Lankan district. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaire (tested for content validity) completed by medical (n = 218) and nursing (n = 368) students, nurses (n = 178) and doctors (n = 127). RESULTS: Acceptability of PND was 94%, 91%, 86% and 71% respectively for LRD, DS, hemophilia and NDD. Favorable attitudes toward TOP for DS (84%), and LRD (82%) were higher compared with hemophilia (65%) and NDD (53%). There was willingness to consider TOP for self/spouse for DS (79%), LRD (78%), hemophilia (60%) and NDD (54%). The proportions willing to participate in a pregnancy termination (DS 54%, LRD 51%, hemophilia 38%, NDD 38%) were lower. Religious affiliation influenced attitudes regarding TOP with Christians being more opposed than Buddhists. CONCLUSIONS: There is acceptance of and willingness to participate in TOP for fetal anomalies among Sri Lankan healthcare workers. These findings have relevance for developing prenatal diagnostic services in Sri Lanka. Religious affiliation among Asian doctors, nurses (and patients) in developed countries is likely to determine permissiveness toward PND and TOP.

RESUMEN

A high-performance liquid chromatography assay equipped with a glassy carbon electrode for electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD) was developed at reductive mode for the analysis of artemisinin, the antimalarial drug from Artemisia annua (Asteraceae) in human plasma. This method was selective, sensitive, and produced satisfactory recovery, precision, and accuracy. Analysis of plasma samples from 8 male volunteers given 10 mg kg-1 of artemisinin orally as an aqueous suspension showed a mean peak plasma concentration (Cmax) of 580.89 ng ml-1 +/- 88.64 SD at 2.5 h +/- 0.5 SD after dosing, and the mean area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC0-infinity) was 2227.57 ng h ml-1 +/- 677.22 SD. In addition, the elimination rate constant (Ke), elimination half-life (t1/2), and apparent volume of distribution (Vd) were calculated to be 0.2971 h-1 +/- 0.0644 SD, 2.42 h +/- 0.46 SD, and 16.26 l kg-1 +/- 3.44 SD, respectively.

RESUMEN

Artemisia annua L. seeds from North Viet Nam were germinated and continuously propagated by tissue culture technique. Three-week-old plantlets were transplanted from the laboratory into the field under tropical climatic conditions and assayed for artemisinin at different stages of growth. The plants had short stature (100 cm), early flowering (14 weeks), short growth span (18-20 weeks), variable artemisinin content and produced no seeds. The highest artemisinin yield was found in the leaves of twelve (0.13-0.31%) to thirteen (0.12-0.39%) weeks old plants during pre-flowering periods. Plantlets in the test tubes were randomly selected and cloned. Statistical comparison of the artemisinin content from the various clones indicated that they may be grouped as high (0.41-0.42%), moderate (0.25-0.26%), and low (0.13%) artemisinin yielders.
