RESUMEN

Manipulating the chirality of the spin-polarized electronic state is pivotal for understanding many unusual quantum spin phenomena, but it has not been achieved at the single-molecule level. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we successfully manipulate the chirality of spin distribution in a triple-decker single-molecule magnet tris(phthalocyaninato)bis(terbium(III)) (Tb2Pc3), which is evaporated on a Pb(111) substrate via molecular beam epitaxy. The otherwise achiral Tb2Pc3 becomes chiral after being embedded into the self-assembled monolayer films of bis(phthalocyaninato)terbium(III) (TbPc2). The chirality of the spin distribution in Tb2Pc3 is manifested via the spatial mapping of its Kondo resonance state from its ligand orbital. Our first-principles calculations revealed that the spin and molecular chirality are associated with a small rotation followed by a structural distortion of the top Pc, consistent with the experimental observation. By constructing tailored molecular clusters with the STM tip, a single Tb2Pc3 molecule can be manipulated among achiral and differently handed chiral configurations of spin distributions reversibly. This paves the way for designing chiral spin enantiomers for fundamental studies and developing functional spintronic devices.

RESUMEN

Lanthanide metal clusters excel in combining molecular and material chemistry properties. Here, we report an efficient cooperative sensitization UC phenomenon of a Eu3+/Yb3+ nonanuclear lanthanide cluster in CD3OD. The synthesis and characterization of the heteronuclear cluster in the solid state and solution are described together with the UC phenomenon showing Eu3+ luminescence in the visible region upon 980 nm NIR excitation of Yb3+ at concentrations as low as 100 nM. Alongside being the Eu/Yb cluster to display UC (with a quantum yield value of 4.88 × 10-8 upon 1.13 W cm-2 excitation at 980 nm), the cluster exhibits downshifted light emission of Yb3+ in the NIR region upon 578 nm visible excitation of Eu3+, which is ascribed to sensitization pathways for Yb through the 5D0 energy levels of Eu3+. Additionally, a faint emission is also observed at ca. 500 nm upon 980 nm excitation, originating from the cooperative luminescence of Yb3+. The [Eu8Yb(BA)16(OH)10]Cl cluster (BA = benzoylacetonate) is also a field-induced single-molecular magnet (SMM) under 4K with a modest Ueff/kB of 8.48 K, thereby joining the coveted list of Yb-SMMs and emerging as a prototype system for next-generation devices, combining luminescence with single-molecular magnetism in a molecular cluster.

RESUMEN

Rare-earth based single-molecule magnets are promising candidates for magnetic information storage including qubits as their large magnetic moments are carried by localized 4f electrons. This shielding from the environment in turn hampers a direct electronic access to the magnetic moment. Here, we present the indirect readout of the Dy moment in Bis(phthalocyaninato)dysprosium (DyPc_{2}) molecules on Au(111) using milli-Kelvin scanning tunneling microscopy. Because of an unpaired electron on the exposed Pc ligand, the molecules show a Kondo resonance that is, however, split by the ferromagnetic exchange interaction between the unpaired electron and the Dy angular momentum. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we read out the Dy magnetic moment as a function of the applied magnetic field, exploiting the spin polarization of the exchange-split Kondo state.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional (2D) layered hybrid bromoplumbate perovskites are promising candidates for solution-processed light-emitting materials. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of two novel layered bromoplumbates: (4BrPhMA)2PbBr4 (1) and (4BrPhA)6Pb3Br12 (2), where 4BrPhMA is (4-bromophenyl)methylammonium and 4BrPhA is (4-bromophenyl) ammonium. Despite similar optical absorption, these materials show remarkably different photoluminescence properties: 1 emits a narrow exciton band at ca. 395 nm with a very small bandwidth (particularly at low temperatures of 15-50 K) and Stokes shift, while 2 exhibits a broad emission at ca. 560 nm with a large Stokes shift, both at low and ambient temperatures. However, under several kbar of hydrostatic pressure, the broad emission diminishes and a new band reversibly develops at ca. 395 nm, similar to that in 1. Our results emphasize organic layer flexibility as an important design factor for this class of perovskite-like materials featuring broadband emission.

RESUMEN

Extended organometallic honeycomb alkynyl-silver networks have been synthesized on a noble metal surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions via a gas-mediated surface reaction protocol. Specifically, the controlled exposure to molecular oxygen efficiently deprotonates terminal alkyne moieties of 1,3,5-tris(4-ethynylphenyl)benzene (Ext-TEB) precursors adsorbed on Ag(111). At Tsub = 200 K, this O2-mediated reaction pathway features high chemoselectivity without poisoning the surface. Through mild annealing to 375 K, long-range ordered alkynyl-silver networks incorporating substrate atoms evolve, featuring Ag- bis-acetylide motifs, high structural quality and a regular arrangement of nanopores with a van der Waals cavity of ≈8.3 nm2.

RESUMEN

Surface-confined covalent coupling reactions of the linear compound 4-(but-3-en-1-ynyl)-4'-ethynyl-1,1'-biphenyl (1), which contains one alkyne and one enyne group on opposing ends, have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reactions show a surface-dependent chemoselectivity: on Au(111), compound 1 preferentially yields cyclotrimerization products, while on Cu(111), a selective coupling between the enyne and alkyne groups is observed. Linear, V-shaped string formations combined with Y-shaped bifurcation motifs result in a random reticulation on the entire surface. DFT calculations show that the C-H⋅⋅⋅πδ- transition state of the reaction between the deprotonated alkyne group and a nearby H-donor of the alkene group plays a key role in the mechanism and high chemoselectivity. This study highlights a concept that opens new avenues to the surface-confined synthesis of covalent carbon-based sp-sp2 polymers.

RESUMEN

Reaction pathways involving quantum tunneling of protons are fundamental to chemistry and biology. They are responsible for essential aspects of interstellar synthesis, the degradation and isomerization of compounds, enzymatic activity, and protein dynamics. On-surface conditions have been demonstrated to open alternative routes for organic synthesis, often with intricate transformations not accessible in solution. Here, we investigate a hydroalkoxylation reaction of a molecular species adsorbed on a Ag(111) surface by scanning tunneling microscopy complemented by X-ray electron spectroscopy and density functional theory. The closure of the furan ring proceeds at low temperature (down to 150 K) and without detectable side reactions. We unravel a proton-tunneling-mediated pathway theoretically and confirm experimentally its dominant contribution through the kinetic isotope effect with the deuterated derivative.

RESUMEN

As an extension of two-level quantum bits (qubits), multilevel systems, so-called qu dits, where d represents the Hilbert space dimension, have been predicted to reduce the number of iterations in quantum-computation algorithms. This has been tested in the well-known [TbPc2]0 single-molecule magnet (SMM), which allowed implementation of the Grover algorithm in a single molecular unit. In the quest for molecular systems possessing an increased number of accessible nuclear spin states, we explore herein a dimeric Tb2-SMM via single-crystal µ-SQUID measurements at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We observe ferromagnetic interactions between the TbIII ions and cooperative quantum tunneling of the electronic spins with spin ground state | J z = ±6⟩. Strong hyperfine coupling with the TbIII nuclear spins leads to a multitude of spin-reversal paths, leading to seven strong hyperfine-driven tunneling steps in the hysteresis loops. Our results show the possibility of reading out the TbIII nuclear spin states via cooperative tunneling of the electronic spins, making the dimeric Tb2-SMM an excellent nuclear spin qu dit candidate with d = 16.

RESUMEN

Metal-organic coordination networks self-assembled on surfaces have emerged as functional low-dimensional architectures with potential applications ranging from the fabrication of functional nanodevices to electrocatalysis. Among them, bis-pyridyl-bispyrimidine (PBP) and Fe-PBP on noble metal surfaces appear as interesting systems in revealing the details of the molecular self-assembly and the effect of metal incorporation on the organic network arrangement. Herein, we report a combined STM, XPS, and DFT study revealing polymorphism in bis-pyridyl-bispyrimidine adsorbed adlayers on the reconstructed Au(111) surface. The polymorphic structures are converted by the addition of Fe adatoms into one unique Fe-PBP surface structure. DFT calculations show that while all PBP phases exhibit a similar thermodynamic stability, metal incorporation selects the PBP structure that maximizes the number of metal-N close contacts. Charge transfer from the Fe adatoms to the Au substrate and N-Fe interactions stabilize the Fe-PBP adlayer. The increased thermodynamic stability of the metal-stabilized structure leads to its sole expression on the surface.

RESUMEN

Quantum control of individual spins in condensed-matter devices is an emerging field with a wide range of applications, from nanospintronics to quantum computing. The electron, possessing spin and orbital degrees of freedom, is conventionally used as the carrier of quantum information in proposed devices. However, electrons couple strongly to the environment, and so have very short relaxation and coherence times. It is therefore extremely difficult to achieve quantum coherence and stable entanglement of electron spins. Alternative concepts propose nuclear spins as the building blocks for quantum computing, because such spins are extremely well isolated from the environment and less prone to decoherence. However, weak coupling comes at a price: it remains challenging to address and manipulate individual nuclear spins. Here we show that the nuclear spin of an individual metal atom embedded in a single-molecule magnet can be read out electronically. The observed long lifetimes (tens of seconds) and relaxation characteristics of nuclear spin at the single-atom scale open the way to a completely new world of devices in which quantum logic may be implemented.

RESUMEN

The novel functionalized porphyrin [5,15-bis(ethynyl)-10,20-diphenylporphinato]copper(II) (CuDEPP) was used as electrodes for rechargeable energy-storage systems with an extraordinary combination of storage capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. The ability of CuDEPP to serve as an electron donor or acceptor supports various energy-storage applications. Combined with a lithium negative electrode, the CuDEPP electrode exhibited a long cycle life of several thousand cycles and fast charge-discharge rates up to 53 C and a specific energy density of 345 Wh kg-1 at a specific power density of 29 kW kg-1 . Coupled with a graphite cathode, the CuDEPP anode delivered a specific power density of 14 kW kg-1 . Whereas the capacity is in the range of that of ordinary lithium-ion batteries, the CuDEPP electrode has a power density in the range of that of supercapacitors, thus opening a pathway toward new organic electrodes with excellent rate capability and cyclic stability.

RESUMEN

We report on an approach to realize carbon-gold (C-Au) bonded molecular junctions without the need for an additive to deprotect the alkynyl carbon as endstanding anchor group. Using the mechanically controlled break junction (MCBJ) technique, we determine the most probable conductance value of a family of alkynyl terminated oligophenylenes (OPA(n)) connected to gold electrodes through such an akynyl moiety in ambient conditions. The molecules bind to the gold leads through an sp-hybridized carbon atom at each side. Comparing our results with other families of molecules that present organometallic C-Au bonds, we conclude that the conductance of molecules contacted via an sp-hybridized carbon atom is lower than the ones using sp(3) hybridization due to strong differences in the coupling of the conducting orbitals with the gold leads.

RESUMEN

The covalent linking of acetylene compounds is an important synthetic tool to control carbon-carbon bond formation and has been extensively studied for more than a century. Notably, Glaser coupling and subsequently developed refined procedures present an important route for the fabrication of distinct carbon-based scaffolds incorporating units with both sp(2)- and sp-hybridizations, such as carbyne chains, or two-dimensional (2D) graphyne or graphdiyne networks. However, the realization of the envisioned regular low-dimensional compounds and nanoarchitectures poses formidable challenges when following conventional synthesis protocols in solution, which we briefly overview. Now, recent developments in on-surface synthesis establish novel means for the construction of tailored covalent nanostructures under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Here we focus on the exploration of pathways utilizing interfacial synthesis with terminal alkynes toward the atomically precise fabrication of low-dimensional carbon-rich scaffolds and nanomaterials. We review direct, molecular-level investigations, mainly relying on scanning probe microscopy, providing atomistic insights into thermally activated reaction schemes, their special pathways and products. Using custom-made molecular units, the employed homocoupling, cyclotrimerization, cycloaddition, and radical cyclization processes indeed yield distinct compounds, extended oligomers or 2D networks. Detailed insights into surface interactions such as bonding sites or conformational adaptation, and specific reaction mechanisms, including hierarchic pathways, were gained by sophisticated density functional theory calculations, complemented by X-ray spectroscopy measurements. For the fabrication of regular nanostructures and architectures, it is moreover imperative to cope with spurious side reactions, frequently resulting in chemical diversity. Accordingly, we highlight measures for increasing chemo- and regioselectivity by smart precursor design, substrate templating, and external stimuli. The ensuing preorganization of functional groups and control of side reactions increases product yields markedly. Finally, the electronic band structures of selected cases of novel low-dimensional hydrocarbon materials accessible with the monomers employed to date are discussed with a specific focus on their differences to theoretically established graphyne- and graphdiyne-related scaffolds. The presented methodology and gained insights herald further advancements in the field, heading toward novel molecular compounds, low-dimensional nanostructures, and coherently reticulated polymeric layers, eventually presenting well-defined arrangements with specific carbon-carbon bond sequencing and electronic characteristics. The functional properties of these or other foreseeable scaffolds and architectures bear significant prospects for a wide range of applications, for example, in nanoelectronics, photonics, or carbon-based technologies.

RESUMEN

The tessellation of the Euclidean plane by regular polygons has been contemplated since ancient times and presents intriguing aspects embracing mathematics, art, and crystallography. Significant efforts were devoted to engineer specific 2D interfacial tessellations at the molecular level, but periodic patterns with distinct five-vertex motifs remained elusive. Here, we report a direct scanning tunneling microscopy investigation on the cerium-directed assembly of linear polyphenyl molecular linkers with terminal carbonitrile groups on a smooth Ag(111) noble-metal surface. We demonstrate the spontaneous formation of fivefold Ce-ligand coordination motifs, which are planar and flexible, such that vertices connecting simultaneously trigonal and square polygons can be expressed. By tuning the concentration and the stoichiometric ratio of rare-earth metal centers to ligands, a hierarchic assembly with dodecameric units and a surface-confined metal-organic coordination network yielding the semiregular Archimedean snub square tiling could be fabricated.

RESUMEN

We present a rational design approach to customize the spin texture of surface states of a topological insulator. This approach relies on the extreme multifunctionality of organic molecules that are used to functionalize the surface of the prototypical topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3. For the rational design we use theoretical calculations to guide the choice and chemical synthesis of appropriate molecules that customize the spin texture of Bi2Se3. The theoretical predictions are then verified in angular-resolved photoemission experiments. We show that, by tuning the strength of molecule-TI interaction, the surface of the TI can be passivated, the Dirac point can energetically be shifted at will, and Rashba-split quantum-well interface states can be created. These tailored interface properties-passivation, spin-texture tuning, and creation of hybrid interface states-lay a solid foundation for interface-assisted molecular spintronics in spin-textured materials.

RESUMEN

Organocobalt complexes represent a versatile tool in organic synthesis as they are important intermediates in Pauson-Khand, Friedel-Crafts, and Nicholas reactions. Herein, a single-molecule-level investigation addressing the formation of an organocobalt complex at a solid-vacuum interface is reported. Deposition of 4,4'-(ethyne-1,2-diyl)dibenzonitrile and Co atoms on the Ag(111) surface followed by annealing resulted in genuine complexes in which single Co atoms laterally coordinated to two carbonitrile groups undergo organometallic bonding with the internal alkyne moiety of adjacent molecules. Alternative complexation scenarios involving fragmentation of the precursor were ruled out by complementary X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. According to density functional theory analysis, the complexation with the alkyne moiety follows the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model for a two-electron-donor ligand where an alkyne-to-Co donation occurs together with a strong metal-to-alkyne back-donation.

RESUMEN

Lanthanide-based metal-organic compounds and architectures are promising systems for sensing, heterogeneous catalysis, photoluminescence, and magnetism. Herein, the fabrication of interfacial 2D lanthanide-carboxylate networks is introduced. This study combines low- and variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations addressing their design and electronic properties. The bonding of ditopic linear linkers to Gd centers on a Cu(111) surface gives rise to extended nanoporous grids, comprising mononuclear nodes featuring eightfold lateral coordination. XPS and DFT elucidate the nature of the bond, indicating ionic characteristics, which is also manifest in appreciable thermal stability. This study introduces a new generation of robust low-dimensional metallosupramolecular systems incorporating the functionalities of the f-block elements.

RESUMEN

Surface-assisted covalent synthesis currently evolves into an important approach for the fabrication of functional nanostructures at interfaces. Here, we employ scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the homocoupling reaction of linear, terminal alkyne-functionalized polyphenylene building-blocks on noble metal surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum. On the flat Ag(111) surface, thermal activation triggers a variety of side-reactions resulting in irregularly branched polymeric networks. Upon alignment along the step-edges of the Ag(877) vicinal surface drastically improves the chemoselectivity of the linking process permitting the controlled synthesis of extended-graphdiyne wires with lengths reaching 30 nm. The ideal hydrocarbon scaffold is characterized by density functional theory as a 1D, direct band gap semiconductor material with both HOMO and LUMO-derived bands promisingly isolated within the electronic structure. The templating approach should be applicable to related organic precursors and different reaction schemes thus bears general promise for the engineering of novel low-dimensional carbon-based materials.

RESUMEN

Surface coordination networks formed by co-adsorption of metal atoms and organic ligands have interesting properties, for example regarding catalysis and data storage. Surface coordination networks studied to date have typically been based on single metal atom centers. The formation of a novel surface coordination network is now demonstrated that is based on network nodes in the form of clusters consisting of three Cu adatoms. The network forms by deposition of tetrahydroxybenzene (THB) on Cu(111) under UHV conditions. As shown from a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, all four hydroxy groups of THB dehydrogenate upon thermal activation at 440 K. This highly reactive ligand binds to Cu adatom trimers, which are resolved by high-resolution STM. The network creates an ordered array of mono-dispersed metal clusters constituting a two-dimensional analogue of metal-organic frameworks.

RESUMEN

Graphyne (GY) and graphdiyne (GDY)-based monolayers represent the next generation 2D carbon-rich materials with tunable structures and properties surpassing those of graphene. However, the detection of band formation in atomically thin GY/GDY analogues has been challenging, as both long-range order and atomic precision have to be fulfilled in the system. The present work reports direct evidence of band formation in on-surface synthesized metallated Ag-GDY sheets with mesoscopic (≈1 µm) regularity. Employing scanning tunneling and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies, energy-dependent transitions of real-space electronic states above the Fermi level and formation of the valence band are respectively observed. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborate the observations and reveal that doubly degenerate frontier molecular orbitals on a honeycomb lattice give rise to flat, Dirac and Kagome bands close to the Fermi level. DFT modeling also indicates an intrinsic band gap for the pristine sheet material, which is retained for a bilayer with h-BN, whereas adsorption-induced in-gap electronic states evolve at the synthesis platform with Ag-GDY decorating the (111) facet of silver. These results illustrate the tremendous potential for engineering novel band structures via molecular orbital and lattice symmetries in atomically precise 2D carbon materials.
