RESUMEN

We report amplification of the MLL gene region (11q23-->11qter) in a 72-year-old woman with myelodysplastic syndrome progressing to acute myelomonocytic leukemia and in a 51-year-old man with a history of hairy cell leukemia and secondary myelodysplasia progressing to acute myelogenous leukemia. The amplicons containing MLL were shown by molecular cytogenetics to extend from chromosomal region 11q23 to the distal long arm of chromosome 11 and to be present in the first patient in five copies on a large ring chromosome and present in the second patient also in five copies on two derived chromosomes. Other karyotypic findings in the first patient included del(5q), +8, and der(21)t(17;21), resulting in the loss of a copy of 17p, whereas deletion 7q was observed in the second patient. Southern-blot analysis for the second patient was consistent with MLL amplification but did not demonstrate rearrangement of the germ-line MLL band. Amplification of MLL and the 11q23 region has been documented in only a few cases and appears to be yet another mechanism by which MLL contributes to the leukemia phenotype.

RESUMEN

Previous studies have not demonstrated a consistent relationship between precursors to acetylcholine (ACh) and memory function in normal human subjects. This experiment (N = 80, college students) employed a double-blind mixed design to test the effect of phosphatidylcholine (PCh) on explicit memory. Dose of placebo and PCh was compared at two levels (10 and 25 g) as was time of testing postingestion (60 and 90 min). With 25 g of PCh, which supplies 3.75 g of choline, significant improvement in explicit memory, as measured by a serial learning task, was observed at 90 min postingestion and slight improvement was observed at 60 min postigestion. Further analyses indicated that this improvement may have been due to the responses of slow learners. This is the first study to test the relationship between a single dose of PCh and explicit memory on normal human subjects.

RESUMEN

Two kinds of perceptual priming (word identification and word fragment completion), as well as preference priming (that may rely on special affective mechanisms) were examined after participants either read or named the colors of words and nonwords at study. Participants named the colors of words more slowly than the colors of nonwords, indicating that lexical processing of the words occurred at study. Nonetheless, priming on all three tests was lower after color naming than after reading, despite evidence of lexical processing during color naming shown by slower responses to words than to nonwords. These results indicate that selective attention to (rather than the mere processing of) letter string identity at study is important for subsequent repetition priming.

RESUMEN

An approximate method to determine sample size for the estimation of population variance, σ(2), is given. The estimate of σ(2) is denoted as s(2) . Based on the assumption of a normal distribution for (s(2)/σ(2)-1), the sample size is approximately equal to 20,000 z(2) p,/k(2); where z is a standard normal deviate, p is the probability that Δs(2) (≡ 100¦s(2) - σ(2)¦/σ(2)) is less than, or equal to, a critical value k, and k (measured as gDs(2)) is the desired precision of s(2) .The expected value of Δs(2), with respect to sample size, and the expected cumulative frequencies of Δs(2) over sample size for various k values are given. Their goodness of fit to the observed results was satisfactory except for populations that were different from normal. The observed values were taken from a study on four yield components in five sugarcane polycross progenies, grown in two contrasting environments over 2 years in three selection stages. The expected Δs(2) was found to be independent of the population coefficient of variance.

RESUMEN

Three experiments examined contributions of study phase awareness of word identity to subsequent word-identification priming by manipulating visual attention to words at study. In Experiment 1, word-identification priming was reduced for ignored relative to attended words, even though ignored words were identified sufficiently to produce negative priming in the study phase. Word-identification priming was also reduced after color naming relative to emotional valence rating (Experiment 2) or word reading (Experiment 3), even though an effect of emotional valence upon color naming (Experiment 2) indicated that words were identified at study. Thus, word-identification priming was reduced even when word identification occurred at study. Word-identification priming may depend on awareness of word identity at the time of study.

RESUMEN

Five Hawaiian commercial sugarcane (Saccharum sp. hybrids) clones were crossed in a full diallel. Four morphological characters were studied in the progeny: number of millable stalks per plant, stalk diameter, stalk length, and sucrose content. A fifth character, plant volume, was calculated from stalk number, stalk diameter and stalk length. The five selected parental clones were treated as fixed variables in the analysis. General combining ability (gca) was significant for all five characters; specific combining ability (sca) was significant for stalk diameter, stalk length, and plant volume. The variance for gca was large in all progeny populations. However, the variance for sca was large in the progeny of only some clones and/or for some individual characters. Parents were evaluated on the basis of their general combining ability: clone H49-3533 had high gca for sucrose content, while clone H53-5356 had high gca for plant vigor.
