RESUMEN

The electrolytes for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are plagued by a low Li+ transference number (T+) of conventional lithium salts and inability to form a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here, we synthesized a self-folded lithium salt, lithium 2-[2-(2-methoxy ethoxy)ethoxy]ethanesulfonyl(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiETFSI), and comparatively studied with its structure analogue, lithium 1,1,1-trifluoro-N-[2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)]ethyl]methanesulfonamide (LiFEA). The special anion chemistry imparts the following new characteristics: i) In both LiFEA and LiETFSI, the ethylene oxide moiety efficiently captures Li+, resulting in a self-folded structure and high T+ around 0.8. ii) For LiFEA, a Li-N bond (2.069 Å) is revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicating that the FEA anion possesses a high donor number (DN) and thus an intensive interphase "self-cleaning" function for an ultra-thin and compact SEI. iii) Starting from LiFEA, an electron-withdrawing sulfone group is introduced near the N atom. The distance of Li-N is tuned from 2.069 Šin LiFEA to 4.367 Šin LiETFSI. This alteration enhances ionic separation, achieves a more balanced DN, and tunes the self-cleaning intensity for a reinforced SEI. Consequently, the fast charging/discharging capability of LMBs is progressively improved. This rationally tuned anion chemistry reshapes the interactions among Li+, anions, and solvents, presenting new prospects for advanced LMBs.

Improved durability, enhanced interfacial stability, and room temperature applicability are desirable properties for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs), yet these desired properties are rarely achieved simultaneously. Here, in this work, it is noticed that the huge resistance at Li metal/electrolyte interface dominantly impeded the normal cycling of ASSLMBs especially at around room temperature (<30 °C). Accordingly, a supramolecular polymer ion conductor (SPC) with "weak solvation" of Li+ was prepared. Benefiting from the halogen-bonding interaction between the electron-deficient iodine atom (on 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene) and electron-rich oxygen atoms (on ethylene oxide), the O-Li+ coordination was significantly weakened. Therefore, the SPC achieves rapid Li+ transport with high Li+ transference number, and importantly, derives a unique Li2 O-rich SEI with low interfacial resistance on lithium metal surface, therefore enabling stable cycling of ASSLMBs even down to 10 °C. This work is a new exploration of halogen-bonding chemistry in solid polymer electrolyte and highlights the importance of "weak solvation" of Li+ in the solid-state electrolyte for room temperature ASSLMBs.

Evolutionary biologists have long been fascinated by the striking resemblance to bird droppings of the sit-and-wait crab spiders of the genus Phrynarachne. In doing so, species of Phrynarachne have evolved not to avoid detection, but rather, to cause predators to misidentify them as inedible and/or inanimate bird droppings. However, the lack of a phylogeny for Phrynarachne impedes our understanding of the evolution of this trait in the genus. Here we explore species boundaries in species of Phrynarachne from China using single- and multi-locus species delimitation approaches based on 30 Phrynarachne samples. All species delimitation approaches supported six species of Phrynarachne in China. We further present the first phylogenetic analysis of the genus Phrynarachne and estimate divergence times using two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes. All of our phylogenetic analyses supported the monophyly of Phrynarachne in China, with the genus still included within the higher 'Thomisus group' based on our results. Our dating analyses place the crown age of Phrynarachne in China to the middle Miocene. Taken together, our study provides a time-calibrated phylogeny of the genus Phrynarachne in China for testing hypotheses regarding the evolution of the lineage and bird dropping masquerade.

The segmented trapdoor spiders (Liphistiidae) are the sole surviving family of the suborder Mesothelae, which forms the sister lineage to all other living spiders. Liphistiids have retained a number of plesiomorphic traits and their present-day distribution is limited to East and Southeast Asia. Studying this group has the potential to shed light on the deep evolutionary history of spiders, but the phylogeny and divergence times of the family have not been resolved with confidence. We performed phylogenomic and molecular dating analyses of 2765 ultraconserved element loci from 185 liphistiid taxa. Our analyses show that the crown group of Liphistiidae appeared in the mid-Cretaceous at 102 Ma (95% credibility interval 92-113 Ma), but it was not until the Neogene that much of the diversification within the family occurred in mainland Southeast and East Asia. This diversification was coincident with tectonic events such as the extension of the East Asian continental margin, as well as geological upheavals in Indochina induced by the collision between India and Asia. Our study highlights the important role of major tectonic events in shaping the evolutionary history, present-day diversity, and geographical distribution of mesothele and liphistiid spiders. A single core-offset Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for simultaneous measurement of relative humidity (RH) and temperature is proposed in this paper. The sensing structure is fabricated by splicing dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and no-core fiber (NCF) and splicing two single-mode fibers (SMF) at both ends, where the core-offset is located at the splicing of SMF and DCF. A part of the cladding of DCF is etched to excite the high-order cladding mode (LP10), and PVA is coated on the etched area. The refractive index of PVA varies due to the adsorption of water molecules. Therefore, when the ambient relative humidity and temperature change, the change of MZI phase difference causes the wavelength of the resonant dip to shift. The experimental results indicate that the proposed sensor has a sensitivity of 0.256 nm/RH% for RH range of 30%-95%, and a sensitivity of 0.153 nm/℃ for temperature range of 20℃-80℃, respectively. The simultaneous measurement of RH and temperature can be achieved by demodulating the sensitivity coefficient matrix. The proposed sensor has the characteristics of good repeatability, high sensitivity, and good stability, which make it potentially applications for the detection of RH and temperature measurement.

Determining species boundaries forms an important foundation for biological research. However, the results of molecular species delimitation can vary with the data sets and methods that are used. Here we use a two-step approach to delimit species in the genus Heptathela, a group of primitively segmented trapdoor spiders that are endemic to Japanese islands. Morphological evidence suggests the existence of 19 species in the genus. We tested this initial species hypothesis by using six molecular species-delimitation methods to analyse 180 mitochondrial COI sequences of Heptathela sampled from across the known range of the genus. We then conducted a set of more focused analyses by sampling additional genetic markers from the subset of taxa that were inconsistently delimited by the single-locus analyses of mitochondrial DNA. Multilocus species delimitation was performed using two Bayesian approaches based on the multispecies coalescent. Our approach identified 20 putative species among the 180 sampled individuals of Heptathela. We suggest that our two-step approach provides an efficient strategy for delimiting species while minimizing costs and computational time.

Prey proteins and lipids greatly impact predator life-history traits. However, life-history plasticity offers predators the opportunity to tune the life-history traits in response to the limited macronutrients to allocate among traits. A fast-growing predator species with a strict maturation time may be more likely to consume nutritionally imbalanced prey. Here, we tested this hypothesis by examining the effect of the protein-to-lipid ratio in prey on a small sheet web-building spider, Hylyphantes graminicola, with a short life span, using adult Drosophila melanogaster as the prey. By manipulating the macronutrient content of the prey to generate three prey types with different protein-to-lipid ratios (i.e. high, intermediate and low), we demonstrated that the majority of the spiders that consumed only these flies could reach full maturity. However, juvenile spiders that consumed high-lipid (low protein-to-lipid ratio) flies had a higher rate of mortality than those consuming medium-protein and high-protein flies. The prey protein-to-lipid ratio had no significant effects on the developmental duration and size at maturity. Although the prey protein-to-lipid ratio had no significant influence on mating behaviour and female fecundity, females reared on high-lipid flies exhibited a significant delay in oviposition compared with those reared on high-protein flies. We conclude that high-lipid prey has negative effects on the survival and reproductive function of H. graminicola Our study thus provides clear evidence that low plasticity with fast development to a certain size means a high nutritional requirement for protein at a cost of lower survival and prolonged time to egg laying when prey have low protein-to-lipid content in H. graminicola.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative planning is fundamental for total hip arthroplasty. This study investigated the optimal femoral neck level for measuring femoral anteversion to predict postoperative stem anteversion in developmental dysplasia of the hip and determined the predictive role of average anteversion based on the sagittal 3-point fixation. METHODS: Sixty-two Crowe type II/III dysplastic hips that underwent total hip arthroplasty were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative and postoperative anteversion was measured via 2-dimensional computed tomography. Anterior and posterior cortex anteversions were measured at 6 levels of the proximal femur. Femoral anteversion at each level was calculated. Average anterior (lesser trochanter) and posterior cortex anteversions (femoral neck) were calculated based on the sagittal 3-point fixation. RESULTS: From the lesser trochanter to head-neck junction, femoral anteversion decreased gradually from more to less than stem anteversion. For hips with femoral neck height ≥10 mm, femoral anteversion at the 10-mm level above the lesser trochanter proximal base showed no significant difference with stem anteversion, with a good correlation for the single-wedge and an excellent correlation for the double-wedge stem. Average anterior (lesser trochanter proximal base) and posterior cortex anteversions (femoral neck at 10 mm above the lesser trochanter proximal base) showed no significant difference from stem anteversion, with excellent correlations. CONCLUSION: For Crowe type II/III hips with femoral neck height ≥10 mm, the 10-mm level above the lesser trochanter proximal base is an optimal choice for measuring femoral anteversion to predict postoperative stem anteversion. The average of anterior cortex anteversion at the lesser trochanter and posterior cortex anteversion at the femoral neck has a predictive role.

Subchondral bone has received increasing attention in both basic and clinical research on osteoarthritis (OA). Subchondral bone in OA presents abnormalities in structure, biochemical composition, biomechanics and cellular function. Overall, subchondral bone mainly shows bone resorption in early OA and bone formation in late OA. More and more evidence suggests that abnormalities in subchondral bone of OA promote joint pain generation and articular cartilage degeneration. Inhibition or amelioration of subchondral bone abnormalities can reduce joint pain and can delay cartilage degeneration; thus, subchondral bone-targeted treatment promises to be a new treatment approach for OA. The pathological changes and the role of subchondral bone in OA still require further investigation.

Living fossils are lineages that have retained plesiomorphic traits through long time periods. It is expected that such lineages have both originated and diversified long ago. Such expectations have recently been challenged in some textbook examples of living fossils, notably in extant cycads and coelacanths. Using a phylogenetic approach, we tested the patterns of the origin and diversification of liphistiid spiders, a clade of spiders considered to be living fossils due to their retention of arachnid plesiomorphies and their exclusive grouping in Mesothelae, an ancient clade sister to all modern spiders. Facilitated by original sampling throughout their Asian range, we here provide the phylogenetic framework necessary for reconstructing liphistiid biogeographic history. All phylogenetic analyses support the monophyly of Liphistiidae and of eight genera. As the fossil evidence supports a Carboniferous Euramerican origin of Mesothelae, our dating analyses postulate a long eastward over-land dispersal towards the Asian origin of Liphistiidae during the Palaeogene (39-58 Ma). Contrary to expectations, diversification within extant liphistiid genera is relatively recent, in the Neogene and Late Palaeogene (4-24 Ma). While no over-water dispersal events are needed to explain their evolutionary history, the history of liphistiid spiders has the potential to play prominently in vicariant biogeographic studies.

PURPOSE: Revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) is challenging if severe periacetabular bone loss is present. Here we describe a method that uses a customised cage to reconstruct an acetabulum with a massive bone defect. METHODS: Designed with the aid of the rapid prototyping technique, a customised cage with a hook, crest and flange or braids was made, and then utilized to reconstruct severe compromised acetabulum in revision THA since 2001. Twenty-two patients (23 hips) were included in this study. The mean patient age at the time of surgery was 60.9 years (range, 38-80 years). Three hips had massive acetabular bone defects of Paprosky type IIIA and 20 of type IIIB. The Harris hip score was used to evaluate hip function. Radiographs were taken to evaluate loosening of the cage and resorption of allograft bone. RESULTS: The average follow up was 81.6 ± 24.9 months. The mean Harris hip score improved from 39.6 pre-operatively to 80.9 at the final follow-up. There were no instances of deep infection, severe venous thrombosis, and nerve palsy. One patient who had an intra-operative rupture of the superior acetabular artery was successfully treated using the haemostatic suturing technique. Two patients experienced dislocation at post-operative days four and six, respectively, and both were treated with closed reduction and skin traction for three weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that a customised cage may be a promising option for THA revision of severely compromised acetabula. Extended follow-up is necessary to evaluate the long-term performance of this approach.

Although many salticid spiders have been shown to have corneas that transmit ultraviolet (UV) light, whether the corneas of non-salticid spiders transmit UV has not been previously investigated. In this study, we determined the spectral corneal transmission properties of 38 species belonging to 13 non-salticid families. We used these data to estimate the T50 transmission cut-off value, the wavelength corresponding to 50% maximal transmission for each species. The corneas of almost all species from the families Deinopidae, Lycosidae, Oxyopidae, Pisauridae, Sparassidae and Thomisidae, all of which have been reported to rely to a substantial extent on vision, transmitted short wavelength light below 400 nm, ranging from 306 to 381 nm. However, species from the families Atypidae and Ctenizidae are not known to rely substantially on vision, and the corneas of these species tended to absorb light of wavelengths below 380 nm, which may not allow UV sensitivity in these spiders. Liphistiidae, the family widely regarded as most basal among spiders, is of particular interest. The species in this family are not known to make substantial use of vision, and yet we found that liphistiid corneas transmitted UV light with a low T50 value (359 nm). T50 values of non-salticid spider corneas also varied with light habitat. Species living in dim environments tended to have UV-opaque corneas, but species inhabiting open areas had UV-transmitting corneas. However, there was no evidence of corneal transmission properties being related to whether a species is diurnal or nocturnal.

Acetabular osteophytes are common during total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the fate and role of superolateral osteophytes of the acetabulum after THA remain unclear. The present study reviewed a series of radiographic changes in the osteophytes on the superolateral region of the acetabulum in 35 hips. The mean follow-up period was 42.2months. The results revealed that the osteophytes that were not in contact with the superolateral edge of acetabular cup were gradually absorbed after THA. In contrast, the osteophytes that were in contact with the superolateral edge of the acetabular cup underwent remodeling, formed regular trabecula, were stress bearing, and eventually integrated with the acetabular cup and the original acetabular bone, and should play a role in stabilizing the acetabular cup.

Four new species of Liphistius belonging to the birmanicus species group are described from Myanmar based on both sexes: L.kalaw Zhan & Xu, sp. nov. (♂♀), L.kanpetlet Zhan & Xu, sp. nov. (♂♀), L.nawngau Zhan & Xu, sp. nov. (♂♀) and L.rostratus Zhan & Xu, sp. nov. (♂♀). Currently, Myanmar stands as the westernmost country where Liphistius is distributed, with the new species L.kanpetlet sp. nov. being found in the westernmost region of Myanmar.

Chondroblastoma (CBL) is a benign bone tumor occurring mostly in teenagers. Despite this, CBL can recur and metastasize after curettage, which may impede normal epiphysis. In search of a novel targeted therapy for CBL, we aimed at BMP-2, a factor critical for chondro-osteogenesis and chondrocyte proliferation. Two pathways upstream of BMP-2, the mTOR and HIF, were targeted with rapamycin (Rapa) and FM19G11 (FM), respectively. Using immunohistochemistry, we found BMP-2 was highly expressed in CBL tissues. CBL cells explanted and confirmed with higher BMP-2 level than normal cartilage. Protumorigenic effect of Rapa and FM on CBL cells were transduced via BMP-2. Combination of Rapa and FM conferred stronger inhibition of cell proliferation than either monotherapy and inhibited levels of chondro-osteogenic markers (Sox9, aggrecan, and type II collagen). To minimize the adverse effect of Rapa, we performed screening in essential amino acids and found leucine deprivation-sensitized CBL cells to Rapa. Combination treatment of low dose Rapa, FM, and leucine deprivation conferred compatible inhibitory effects on CBL cell proliferation, chondro-osteogenic potential, and tumorigenic capacity. We conclude that targeting BMP-2 using mTOR/HIF inhibition could potently curb the disease. Addition of low-leucine diet could lower the dose of rapamycin in chase for less toxicity.

AIM: To investigate the roles of the calcineurin/nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) pathway in regulation of wear particles-induced cytokine release and osteoclastogenesis from mouse bone marrow macrophages in vitro. METHODS: Osteoclasts were induced from mouse bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) in the presence of 100 ng/mL receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL). Acridine orange staining and MTT assay were used to detect the cell viability. Osteoclastogenesis was determined using TRAP staining and RT-PCR. Bone pit resorption assay was used to examine osteoclast phenotype. The expression and cellular localization of NFATc1 were examined using RT-PCR and immunofluorescent staining. The production of TNFα was analyzed with ELISA. RESULTS: Titanium (Ti) or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) particles (0.1 mg/mL) did not significantly change the viability of BMMs, but twice increased the differentiation of BMMs into mature osteoclasts, and markedly increased TNF-α production. The TNF-α level in the PMMA group was significantly higher than in the Ti group (96 h). The expression of NFATc1 was found in BMMs in the presence of the wear particles and RANKL. In bone pit resorption assay, the wear particles significantly increased the resorption area and total number of resorption pits in BMMs-seeded ivory slices. Addition of 11R-VIVIT peptide (a specific inhibitor of calcineurin-mediated NFAT activation, 2.0 µmol/L) did not significantly affect the viability of BMMs, but abolished almost all the wear particle-induced alterations in BMMs. Furthermore, VIVIT reduced TNF-α production much more efficiently in the PMMA group than in the Ti group (96 h). CONCLUSION: Calcineurin/NFAT pathway mediates wear particles-induced TNF-α release and osteoclastogenesis from BMMs. Blockade of this signaling pathway with VIVIT may provide a promising therapeutic modality for the treatment of periprosthetic osteolysis.

We have investigated the role of bone-morphogenetic protein (BMP) 2 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) in 33 patients with bladder cancer (BCa) with bone metastasis. Thirty nonmetastatic BCas were included as controls. Immunohistochemical staining with BMP-2 and TNF-α was performed. Expressions of the factors were quantified and studied statistically. As a result, a trend showing higher expression of BMP-2 and TNF-α was associated with advanced disease. Expressions of BMP-2 and TNF-α were significantly higher in BCa with bone metastases (P = .0002 and P = .0172, respectively). The expression of BMP-2 and TNF-α showed a direct correlation in metastatic and muscle-invasive cases (P = .0202 and P = .0004, respectively) but not in nonmetastatic or noninvasive BCa (P = .1834 and P = .9215, respectively). It is postulated that BMP-2 can be responsible for the mechanism involved in triggering bone metastasis in BCa. The correlation with TNF-α indicates that the interaction of the 2 factors may promote local invasion and distant metastasis, especially to bone.

Background: Repeated implantation failure (RIF) is considered one of the major challenges facing clinician in assisted reproduction technologies (ART) despite the significant advances that have been made in this field. Platelet rich plasma (PRP), also known as autologous conditioned plasma, is a protein concentrate with anti-inflammatory and pro-regenerative characteristics. The use of PRP in women undergoing ART has been studied in the past, with varying degrees of success. The goal of this trial was to see if injecting PRP into the uterus improves pregnancy outcomes in women receiving ART. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Database of Clinical Trials were among the databases searched (CENTRAL), from 2015 to 2021. The pooled estimates were calculated using a meta-analysis with a random-effects model. There were 14 studies with a total of 1081 individuals (549 cases and 532 controls). Results: There was no difference in miscarriage rates between women who got PRP and those who received placebo (P≤0.90). Chemical pregnancy (P≤0.00), clinical pregnancy (P ≤0.001), and implantation rate (P≤ 0.001) were all significantly higher in women. Endometrial thickness increased in women who got PRP vs women who received placebo after the intervention (P ≤0.001). Conclusion: PRP may be an alternate therapeutic approach for individuals with thin endometrium and RIF, according to the findings of this comprehensive study. To determine the subgroup that would benefit the most from PRP, more prospective, big, and high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed.

Background: Acting as a viral entry for coronavirus to invade human cells, TMPRSS2 has become a target for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection. Before this, TMPRSS2 has presented biological functions in cancer, but the roles remain controversial and the mechanism remains unelucidated. Some chemicals have been reported to be inhibitors of TMPRSS2 and also demonstrated other pharmacological properties. At this stage, it is important to discover more new compounds targeting TMPRSS2, especially from natural products, for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection. Methods: We analyzed the correlation between TMPRSS2 expression, methylation level, overall survival rate, clinical parameters, biological process, and determined the correlation between TMPRSS2 and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in the tumor and adjacent normal tissue of adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) respectively by using various types of bioinformatics approaches. Moreover, we determined the correlation between TMPRSS2 protein level and the prognosis of LUAD and LUSC cohorts by immunohistochemistry assay. Furthermore, the cancer immunome atlas (TCIA) database was used to predict the relationship between the expression of TMPRSS2 and response to programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) blocker immunotherapy in lung cancer patients. Finally, the putative binding site of ginsenosides bound to TMPRSS2 protein was built from homology modeling to screen high-potency TMPRSS2 inhibitors. Results: We found that TMPRSS2 recruits various types of immunocytes, including CD8+, CD4+ T cells, B cells and DCs both in LUAD and LUSC patients, and the correlation between TMPRSS2 expression and CD8+ and CD4+ T cells are stronger in LUAD rather than in LUSC, but excludes macrophages and neutrophils in LUAD patient cohorts. These might be the reason that higher mRNA and protein levels of TMPRSS2 are associated with better prognosis in LUAD cohorts rather than in LUSC cohorts. Furthermore, we found that TMPRSS2 was positively correlated with the prognosis in patient nonresponse to anti-PD-1 therapy. Therefore, we made an inference that increasing the expression level of TMPRSS2 may improve the anti-PD-1 immunotherapy efficacy. Finally, five ginsenosides candidates with high inhibition potency were screened from the natural chemical library to be used as TMPRSS2 inhibitors. Conclusion: All these may imply that TMPRSS2 might be a novel prognostic biomarker and serve as a potential immunomodulator target of immunotherapy combination therapies in LUAD patients nonresponse to anti-PD-1 therapy. Also, these findings may suggest we should pay more attention to LUAD patients, especially those infected with COVID-19, who should avoid medicating TMPRSS2 inhibitors, such as ginsenosides to gain prophylactic and therapeutic benefits against COVID-19.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are the key components for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries with high energy density and intrinsic safety. However, the low lithium ion transference number (t+) of a conventional SPE and its unstable electrolyte/electrode interface cannot guarantee long-term stable operation. Herein, asymmetric trihalogenated aromatic lithium salts, i.e., lithium (3,4,5-trifluorobenzenesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFFF) and lithium (4-bromo-3,5-difluorobenzenesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFBF), are synthesized for polymer electrolytes. They exhibit higher t+ values and better compatibility with Li metal than conventional lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI). Due to the trihalogenated aromatic anions, LiFFF- and LiFBF-based electrolytes are prone to generate an LiF- and LiBr-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), therefore increasing the stability of the solid electrolyte/anode interface. Particularly, LiFBF could induce a LiF/LiBr hybrid SEI, where LiF shows a high Young's modulus and high surface energy for homogenizing Li ion flux and LiBr exhibits an extremely low Li ion diffusion barrier in the SEI layer. As a result, the Li/Li symmetric cells could remain stable for more than 1200 h without a short circuit and the LiFePO4/Li batteries showed superb electrochemical performance over 1200 cycles at 1 C. This work provides valuable insights from the perspective of lithium salt molecular structures for high-performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.
