RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been proved to play crucial roles in the development of various cancers. However, the molecular mechanism of circGLIS3 involved in gastric cancer (GC) tumorigenesis has not been elucidated. METHODS: The higher expression level of circGLIS3 was identified in GC through RNA sequencing and subsequent tissue verification using Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). A series of functional experiments in vitro and in vivo were performed to evaluated the effects of circGLIS3 on tumor growth and metastasis in GC. The interaction and regulation of circGLIS3/miR-1343-3p/PGK1 axis was confirmed by RNA pulldown, western blot, and rescue experiments. RIP and western blot were performed to demonstrate the role of circGLIS3 in regulating phosphorylation of VIMENTIN. We then used qRT-PCR and co culture system to trace circGLIS3 transmission via exosomal communication and identify the effect of exosomal circGLIS3 on gastric cancer and macrophages. Finally, RIP experiments were used to determine that EIF4A3 regulates circGLIS3 expression. RESULTS: CircGLIS3(hsa_circ_0002874) was significantly upregulated in GC tissues and high circGLIS3 expression was associated with advanced TNM stage and lymph node metastasis in GC patients. We discovered that overexpression of circGLIS3 promoted GC cell proliferation, migration, invasion in vitro and in vivo, while suppression of circGLIS3 exhibited the opposite effect. Mechanistically, circGLIS3 could sponge miR-1343-3p and up-regulate the expression of PGK1 to promote GC tumorigenesis. We also found that circGLIS3 reduced the phosphorylation of VIMENTIN at ser 83 site by binding with VIMENTIN. Moreover, it was proven that exosomal circGLIS3 could promote gastric cancer metastasis and the M2 type polarization of macrophages. In the final step, the mechanism of EIF4A3 regulating the generation of circGLIS3 was determined. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that circGLIS3 promotes GC progression through sponging miR-1343-3p and regulating VIMENTIN phosphorylation. CircGLIS3 is a potential therapeutic target for GC patients.

RESUMEN

We summarize the copy number variations (CNVs) and phenotype spectrum of infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) in a Chinese cohort. The CNVs were identified by genomic copy number variation sequencing. The CNVs and clinical data were analyzed. 74 IESS children with CNVs were enrolled. 35 kinds of CNVs were identified. There were 11 deletions and 5 duplications not reported previously in IESS, including 2 CNVs not reported in epilepsy. 87.8% were de novo, 9.5% were inherited from mother and 2.7% from father. Mosaicism occurred in one patient with Xq21.31q25 duplication. 16.2% (12/74) were 1p36 deletion, and 20.3% (15/74) were 15q11-q13 duplication. The age of seizure onset ranged from 17 days to 24 months. Seizure types included epileptic spasms, focal seizures, tonic seizures, and myoclonic seizures. All patients displayed developmental delay. Additional features included craniofacial anomaly, microcephaly, congenital heart defects, and hemangioma. 29.7% of patients were seizure-free for more than 12 months, and 70.3% still had seizures after trying 2 or more anti-seizure medications. In conclusion, CNVs is a prominent etiology of IESS. 1p36 deletion and 15q duplication occurred most frequently. CNV detection should be performed in patients with IESS of unknown causes, especially in children with craniofacial anomalies and microcephaly.

RESUMEN

The development of super-oscillatory lens (SOL) offers opportunities to realize far-field label-free super-resolution microscopy. Most microscopes based on a high numerical aperture (NA) SOL operate in the point-by-point scanning mode, resulting in a slow imaging speed. Here, we propose a high-NA metalens operating in the single-shot wide-field mode to achieve real-time super-resolution imaging. An optimization model based on the exhaustion algorithm and angular spectrum (AS) theory is developed for metalens design. We numerically demonstrate that the optimized metalens with an NA of 0.8 realizes the imaging resolution (imaging pixel size) about 0.85 times the Rayleigh criterion. The metalens can achieve super-resolution imaging of an object with over 200 pixels, which is one order of magnitude higher than the unoptimized metalens. Our method provides an avenue toward single-shot far-field label-free super-resolution imaging for applications such as real-time imaging of living cells and temporally moving particles.

RESUMEN

In recent years, due to the increasing requirement for real-time and massive data processing, optical analog computation has arisen as a promising alternative to digital computation. Optical spatial differentiation plays a fundamentally important role in various emerging technologies, including augmented reality, autonomous driving, and object recognition. However, previous demonstrations encountered several limitations, such as the dependence on polarization states and a typically limited numerical aperture (NA) of about 0.5, especially in the transmission mode. Here, a new, to our knowledge, design strategy based on the evolution between impedance matching and mismatching in a metasurface is proposed to fill this gap, which can perform dual-polarized second-order derivative for image processing. Our scheme enables high transmission under dual polarization over an 85° incident angle range (NA = 0.996), resulting in more than twofold spatial resolution. Our work paves the way for polarization-insensitive high-resolution signal and image processing in the terahertz region.

RESUMEN

Optical amplification and massive information transfer in modern physics depend on stimulated radiation. However, regardless of traditional macroscopic lasers or emerging micro- and nanolasers, the information modulations are generally outside the lasing cavities. On the other hand, bound states in the continuum (BICs) with inherently enormous Q factors are limited to zero-dimensional singularities in momentum space. Here, we propose the concept of spatial information lasing, whose lasing information entropy can be correspondingly controlled by near-field Bragg coupling of guided modes. This concept is verified in gain-loss metamaterials supporting full-k-space BICs with both flexible manipulations and strong confinement of light fields. The counterintuitive high-dimensional BICs exist in a continuous energy band, which provide a versatile platform to precisely control each lasing Fourier component and, thus, can directly convey rich spatial information on the compact size. Single-mode operation achieved in our scheme ensures consistent and stable lasing information. Our findings can be expanded to different wave systems and open new scenarios in informational coherent amplification and high-Q physical frameworks for both classical and quantum applications.

RESUMEN

As a promising alternative to Ir based acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, Ru suffers from severe fading issues. Supporting it on robust oxides such as TiO2is a simple and effective way to enhance its lifetime. Here, we find that a simple reduction-oxidation process can further improve both activity and stability of RuO2-TiO2composites at high potentials. In this process, the degree of oxidation was carefully controlled to form Ru/RuO2heterostructure to improve OER activity. Moreover, due to the oxophilicity difference of Ru and Ti, the structure of catalysts was changed from supported to embedded, which enhanced the protective effect of TiO2and mitigated the dissolution of Ru element in acidic electrolyte, making as-prepared Ru/RuO2-TiO2with better durability at all tested potentials.

RESUMEN

AIM: To explore the phenotypic spectrum and refine the genotype-phenotype correlation of DYNC1H1-related epilepsy. METHOD: The clinical data of 15 patients with epilepsy in our cohort and 50 patients with epilepsy from 24 published studies with the DYNC1H1 variants were evaluated. RESULTS: In our cohort, 13 variants were identified from 15 patients (seven males, eight females). Twelve variants were de novo and seven were new. Age at seizure onset ranged from 3 months to 4 years 5 months (median age 1 year). Common seizure types were epileptic spasms, focal seizures, tonic seizures, and myoclonic seizures. Mild-to-severe developmental delay was present in all patients. Six patients were diagnosed with West syndrome and one was diagnosed with epileptic encephalopathy with continuous spikes and waves during slow sleep (CSWS). Collectively, in our cohort and published studies, 17% had ophthalmic diseases, 31% of variants were located in the stalk domain, and 92% patients with epilepsy had a malformation of cortical development (MCD). INTERPRETATION: The phenotypes of DYNC1H1-related epilepsy included multiple seizure types; the most common epileptic syndrome was West syndrome. CSWS is a new phenotype of DYNC1H1-related epilepsy. One-third of the variants in patients with epilepsy were located in the stalk domain. Most patients had a MCD and developmental delay. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: Nearly 40% of patients with DYNC1H1 variants had epilepsy. Ninety-two percent of patients with DYNC1H1-related epilepsy had malformation of cortical development. More than 10% of patients with DYNC1H1-related epilepsy were diagnosed with West syndrome. Continuous spikes and waves during slow sleep could be a new phenotype of DYNC1H1 variants. One-third of the variants in patients with epilepsy were located in the stalk domain.

RESUMEN

Coherence, similar to amplitude, polarization, and phase, is a fundamental characteristic of the light fields and is dominated by the statistical optical property. Although spatial coherence is one of the pivotal optical dimensions, it has not been significantly manipulated on the photonic platform. Here, we theoretically and experimentally manipulate the spatial coherence of light fields by loading different random phase distributions onto the wavefront with a metasurface. We achieve the generation of partially coherent light with a predefined degree of coherence and continuously modulate it from coherent to incoherent by controlling the phase fluctuation ranges or the beam sizes. This design strategy can be easily extended to manipulate arbitrary phase-only special beams with the same degree of coherence. Our approach provides straightforward rules to manipulate the coherence of light fields in an extra-cavity-based manner and paves the way for further applications in ghost imaging and information transmission in turbulent media.

RESUMEN

Playing a significant role in electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems, heteroatom-doped transition metal oxides are key materials for oxygen-involving reactions. Herein, mesoporous surface-sulfurized Fe-Co3O4 nanosheets integrated with N/S co-doped graphene (Fe-Co3O4-S/NSG) were designed as composite bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Compared with the Co3O4-S/NSG catalyst, it exhibited superior activity in the alkaline electrolytes by delivering an OER overpotential of 289 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and an ORR half-wave potential of 0.77 V vs. RHE. Additionally, Fe-Co3O4-S/NSG kept stable at 4.2 mA cm-2 for 12 h without significant attenuation to render robust durability. This work not only demonstrates the satisfactory effect of the transition-metal cationic modification represented by iron doping on the electrocatalytic performance of Co3O4, but it also provides a new insight on the design of OER/ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient energy conversion.

RESUMEN

Optical chirality plays a key role in optical biosensing and spin-selective optical field manipulation. However, the maximum optical intrinsic chirality, which is represented by near-unity circular dichroism (CD), is yet to be achieved in a wide bandwidth range based on nanostructures. Here, we utilize dielectric bilayer polyatomic metasurfaces to realize the maximum optical intrinsic chirality over a wide bandwidth range. The CD efficiency of the two designed metasurfaces with opposite chirality is 99.9% at 1350 nm and over 98% from 1340 nm to 1361 nm. Our work provides a straightforward and powerful method for the realization of maximum optical intrinsic chirality, which has great potential in spin-selective optical wave manipulation.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To investigate the level of implicit care rationing and its association with training needs in nursing homes in Shanghai, China. BACKGROUND: Nursing homes in Shanghai are confronted with a lack of care resources. Implicit care rationing can emerge due to inadequate training of care workers. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between 10 September and 17 November 2020. A total of 374 care workers from 16 randomly were selected nursing homes from each of the administrative districts participated the surveys. The Basel Extent of Rationing of Nursing Care-Nursing Home instrument and the training needs analysis were adopted to measure implicit care rationing and training needs, respectively. Multiple regression techniques were used to explore the factors associated with implicit care rationing. RESULTS: Activities related to social care, documentation and activation/rehabilitation (mean rating = 2.8, 1.89 and 1.93 respectively) were mostly likely to be rationed. Training needs of activities of daily living (ADL), activation/rehabilitation and documentation were significantly related to their implicit rationing (ß = 0.864, 0.21 and 0.166, respectively, p < .01). CONCLUSION: Training needs are crucial determinants of implicit care rationing. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Quality control systems are needed to ensure care comprehensiveness. The current training system should be re-designed according to results of training needs analysis.

RESUMEN

Water elements pollution has attracted public attention globally. Wuxi is located in East China, and its water source, Taihu Lake, has been severely polluted since 2007. Studies of elemental pollution profiles have yet to be conducted in this area. In this study, 56 water samples were collected in 2018, and 33 elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the levels of 33 elements ranged from 1.35 × 10-3 µg/L(Tl) to 101 mg/L(Ca), with Sr, Al, Fe, B, Ti, Ba, and Zn levels being relatively higher. A comprehensive literature review showed spatial distribution of conspicuous elements in drinking water worldwide. Meanwhile, Monte Carlo simulations were applied to evaluate exposure health risks. The total hazard index(HI) for 14 non-carcinogens and the average incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of As and Pb exposure through drinking water were found acceptable. Sensitivity analyses suggested that Sb and As in the drinking water represent an increasing risk to human health. The results of this study provide key data on local metal pollution characteristics, help identify potential risk factors, and contribute to the development of effective environmental management policies for Taihu Lake.

RESUMEN

Perfect absorbers with high quality factors (Q-factors) are of great practical significance for optical filtering and sensing. Moreover, tunable multiwavelength absorbers provide a multitude of possibilities for realizing multispectral light intensity manipulation and optical switches. In this study, we demonstrate the use of vanadium dioxide (VO2)-assisted metasurfaces for tunable dual-band and high-quality-factor perfect absorption in the mid-infrared region. In addition, we discuss the potential applications of these metasurfaces in reflective intensity manipulation and optical switching. The Q-factors of the dual-band perfect absorption in the proposed metasurfaces are greater than 1000, which can be attributed to the low radiative loss induced by the guided-mode resonances and low intrinsic loss from the constituent materials. By utilizing the insulator-metal transition in VO2, we further proved that a continuous tuning of the reflectance with a large modulation depth (31.8 dB) can be realized in the designed metasurface accompanied by a dual-channel switching effect. The proposed VO2-assisted metasurfaces have potential applications in dynamic and multifunctional optical devices, such as tunable multiband filters, mid-infrared biochemical sensors, optical switches, and optical modulators.

RESUMEN

We propose an approach to realize a multi-band on-chip photonic spin Hall effect and selective excitation of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) by integrating metasurfaces with microcavities. Free-space circularly polarized light with opposite spin angular momentum can effectively excite WGMs with opposite propagation directions at fixed wavelengths. Moreover, the different WGMs with different propagation directions and polarizations can be selectively excited by manipulating the number of antennas. We demonstrate that the optical properties (i.e., coupling efficiency, peak positions, and peak widths) of the proposed metasurface-integrated microcavities can be easily tailored by adjusting different geometric parameters. This study enables the realization of chiral microcavities with exciting novel functionalities, which may provide a further step in the development of photonic integrated circuits, optical sensing, and chiral optics.

RESUMEN

Urban dust is an important medium of potential toxic metal (PTM) pollution that affects human health and the urban ecosystems. A total of 374 fugitive dust samples were collected in Nanjing, a fast-developing city in southern China, including six sub-types of dust (residential district, commercial district, industrial district, traffic district, cultural and educational district, green land). Chemical analysis of eighteen metal elements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was carried out to establish the sub-type sources profiles of fine particles for fugitive dust. The results show that these metals (Cu, Zn, Se, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sb, and Pb) are mainly from anthropogenic sources and present a high degree of pollution; Mn, As, and Ba are moderately affected by human activities and present a significant degree of pollution; Ni, Co, Cr, Tl, V, Be, and Ti mainly originate from natural sources and present significant, moderate and minimal degrees of pollution. For the dust types from different functional areas, the differences of enrichment factor (EF) values were relatively small. Metals were highly concentrated in dust from residential, cultural and educational district, which had high density population and would pose higher health risk. In all types of dust, the metals rich in crust (Ti, Mn, Ba, Sr) and the metals (Cu, Zn, Pb) closely connected with city activities were the main components. Factor analysis revealed that there were six main sources of metals in dust collected from Nanjing: industrial activity, building decoration, soil dust, metal smelting, traffic emissions, and brake abrasion. Generally, noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks of metals found in dust are rarely found for children and adults based on health risk assessments. However, the noncarcinogenic risk of Pb in commercial districts for children should be noted because its hazard quotient was higher than the safety threshold level. For the accumulative health risk of eighteen metals, the noncarcinogenic risk values of dust from six functional areas for children were all over the threshold (1.0), whereas below 1.0 for adults. The difference between children and adults was relatively obvious. All accumulative risk values of carcinogenic metals did not exceed the carcinogenic risk threshold of 1 × 10-4, which suggested that no risk prevention measures were needed.

RESUMEN

Scatterings and transport in Weyl semimetals have caught growing attention in condensed matter physics, with observables including chiral zero modes and the associated magnetoresistance and chiral magnetic effects. Measurement of electrical conductance is usually performed in these studies, which, however, cannot resolve the momentum of electrons, preventing direct observation of the phase singularities in scattering matrix associated with Weyl point. Here we experimentally demonstrate a helical phase distribution in the angle (momentum) resolved scattering matrix of electromagnetic waves in a photonic Weyl metamaterial. It further leads to spiraling Fermi arcs in an air gap sandwiched between a Weyl metamaterial and a metal plate. Benefiting from the alignment-free feature of angular vortical reflection, our findings establish a new platform in manipulating optical angular momenta with photonic Weyl systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In order to make optimal long-term care-related decisions, it is important to take a societal perspective. Shanghai is one of the pilot cities of social long-term care insurance in China. However, little knowledge exists about the economic value of the informal care provided to dependent elderly people in China. This paper aims to evaluate the economic value of informal caregiving in Shanghai using the contingent valuation method by their least-preferred care tasks, and identify the associated factors of willingness-to-pay (WTP) and willingness-to-accept (WTA) of the informal caregivers. METHODS: This study employed the contingent valuation method to elicit 371 informal caregivers' WTP and WTA for 1 hour of reduction or increase of least-preferred caring tasks in Shanghai. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to explore the associated factors with the WTP and WTA values. RESULTS: The average WTP and WTA were 25.31 CNY and 38.66 CNY, respectively. The associated factors with WTP include caregiver's income and caregiver's relationship to the recipient. Care recipient's age, income, least-preferred task by the caregiver, and subscales of Caregiver Reaction Assessment were found to be associated with WTA. The non-responsiveness rates were 26.1 and 33.2% for WTP and WTA questions, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the current study demonstrated that decision-makers and researchers should take the economic valuation results of informal care into account to make more informed and effective long-term care-related policies and analyses.

RESUMEN

Colors with high saturation are of prime significance for display and imaging devices. So far, structural colors arising from all-dielectric metasurfaces, particularly amorphous silicon and titanium oxide, have exceeded the gamut of standard RGB (sRGB) space. However, the excitation of higher-order modes for dielectric materials hinders the further increase of saturation. Here, to address the challenge, we propose a new design strategy of multipolar-modulated metasurfaces with multi-dielectric stacked layers to realize the deep modulation of multipolar modes. Index matching between layers can suppress the multipolar modes at nonresonant wavelength, resulting in the dramatic enhancement in the monochromaticity of reflection spectra. Ultrahigh-saturation colors ranging from 70% to 90% with full hue have been theoretically and experimentally obtained. The huge gamut space can be realized in an unprecedented way, taking up 171% sRGB space, 127% Adobe RGB space, and 57% CIE space. More interestingly, the coverage for Recommendation 2020 (Rec. 2020) space, which almost has not been successfully realized so far, can reach 90%. We anticipate that the proposed multipolar-modulated metasurfaces are promising for the enlargement of the color range for high-end and advanced display applications.

RESUMEN

Spin-selective manipulation of optical waves is widely utilized in various optical techniques and plays a key role in modern nanophotonics. While numerous efficient approaches have been applied in metasurfaces to realize spin-selective manipulation of optical waves, the implementation of giant spin-selective asymmetric transmission remains a challenge. Here, we propose an all-dielectric metasurface to realize giant tri-band spin-selective asymmetric transmission in the near infrared regime. The proposed giant spin-selective asymmetric transmission is attributed to the excitation of overlapping multipolar resonances in the dielectric elliptic cylinders, which can be well manipulated by changing the structure parameters. This research demonstrates the great potential of all-dielectric metasurfaces for spin-selective transmission manipulation, which provide helpful insights and intriguing possibilities for applications in information optics, quantum optics, optical sensing, and imaging.

RESUMEN

We design and numerically analyze a high-quality (Q)-factor, high modulation depth, multiple Fano resonance device based on periodical asymmetric paired bars in the near-infrared regime. There are four sharp Fano peaks arising from the interference between subradiant modes and the magnetic dipole resonance mode that can be easily tailored by adjusting different geometric parameters. The maximal Q-factor can exceed 105 in magnitude, and the modulation depths ΔT can reach nearly 100%. Combining the narrow resonance line-widths with strong near-field confinement, we demonstrate an optical refractive index sensor with a sensitivity of 370 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 2846. This study may provide a further step in sensing, lasing, and nonlinear optics.
