RESUMEN

Fluorescence imitating brightfield imaging (FIBI) is a novel microscopy method that allows for real-time, nondestructive, slide-free tissue imaging of fresh, formalin-fixed, or paraffin-embedded tissue. The nondestructive nature of the technology permits tissue preservation for downstream analyses. The objective of this observational study was to assess the utility of FIBI compared with conventional hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained histology slides in feline gastrointestinal histopathology. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded full-thickness small intestinal tissue specimens from 50 cases of feline chronic enteropathy were evaluated. The ability of FIBI to evaluate predetermined morphological features (epithelium, villi, crypts, lacteals, fibrosis, submucosa, and muscularis propria) and inflammatory cells was assessed on a 3-point scale (0 = FIBI cannot identify the feature; 1 = FIBI can identify the feature; 2 = FIBI can identify the feature with more certainty than H&E). H&E and FIBI images were also scored according to World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Gastrointestinal Standardization Group guidelines. FIBI identified morphological features with similar or, in some cases, higher confidence compared with H&E images. The identification of inflammatory cells was less consistent. FIBI and H&E images showed an overall poor agreement with regard to the assigned WSAVA scores. While FIBI showed an equal or better ability to identify morphological features in intestinal biopsies, its ability to identify inflammatory cells is currently inferior compared with H&E-based imaging. Future studies on the utility of FIBI as a diagnostic tool for noninflammatory histopathologic lesions are warranted.

Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 (canine parvovirus 2, CPV-2) has undergone a rapid evolution through mutations in the capsid protein VP2, giving rise to variants associated with unique clinicopathological and immunological features. VP2 is a major capsid protein involved in key steps of virus biology, including interactions with cellular receptors and with the immune system. This study analyzed the complete VP2 coding sequence of 38 CPV-2 isolates obtained from dogs with clinical parvovirosis in southern Brazil. Amplicons encompassing the whole VP2 coding region were subjected to nucleotide sequencing, and predicted amino acid sequences were analyzed to identify molecular markers of viral variants. Viral variants were classified as CPV-2a, -2b or -2c based on the presence of the amino acid Asn, Asp or Glu, respectively, at VP2 residue 426. Amino acid sequence analysis identified 20 CPV-2c and four CPV-2b isolates. Eleven viruses were identified as New CPV-2a, two as New CPV-2b, and one resembled the original CPV-2 and was designated CPV-2-like. In addition to the mutation at amino acid 426 of VP2, new 2a/2b variants containing a Ser297Ala mutation at residue 297 were identified. CPV-2-like samples contained some mutations that were also present in the original CPV-2 isolate, including as Leu, Thr, Ala and Asp at residues 87, 101, 300 and 305, respectively. The New CPV-2a isolates had three additional mutations (Phe267Tyr, Tyr324Ile and Thr440Ala) associated with selective pressure and development of disease in vaccinated dogs. The resemblance of the CPV-2-like isolate to CPV-2 suggests reemergence of CPV-2 and/or evolution from vaccine strains. Phylogenetic analysis grouped the variants with their respective reference strains, in general, according to amino acid changes. These results demonstrate the high VP2 diversity of CPV circulating in dogs in southern Brazil and indicate the emergence of new viral variants that differ markedly from the current vaccine strains.

Equid herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is an important pathogen of horses worldwide, associated with respiratory, reproductive and/or neurological disease. A mouse model for EHV-1 infection has been established but fails to reproduce some important aspects of the viral pathogenesis. Then, we investigated the susceptibility of rabbits to EHV-1 aiming at proposing this species as an alternative model for EHV-1 infection. Weanling rabbits inoculated intranasal with EHV-1 Kentucky D (10(7) TCID50/animal) shed virus in nasal secretions up to day 8-10 post-inoculation (pi), presented viremia up to day 14 pi and seroconverted to EHV-1 (virus neutralizing titers 4 to 64). Most rabbits (75%) developed respiratory disease, characterized by serous to hemorrhagic nasal discharge and mild to severe dyspnea. Some animals (20%) presented neurological signs as circling, bruxism and opisthotonus. Six animals died during acute disease (days 3-6); infectious virus and/or viral DNA were detected in the lungs, trigeminal ganglia (TG), olfactory bulbs (OBs) and cerebral cortex/brain (CC). Histological examination showed necrohemorrhagic, multifocal to coalescent bronchointerstitial pneumonia and diffuse alveolar edema. In two rabbits euthanized at day 50 pi, latent EHV-1 DNA was detected in the OBs. Dexamethasone administration at day 50 pi resulted in virus reactivation, demonstrated by virus shedding, viremia, clinical signs, and increase in VN titers and/or by detection of virus DNA in lungs, OBs, TGs and/or CC. These results demonstrate that rabbits are susceptible to EHV-1 infection and develop respiratory and neurological signs upon experimental inoculation. Thus, rabbits may be used to study selected aspects of EHV-1 biology and pathogenesis, extending and complementing the mouse model.

Two genotypically distinct Vaccinia viruses (VACV), named P1V and P2V, were isolated from an outbreak of cutaneous disease in horses in Southern Brazil. We herein investigated the susceptibility of rabbits, a proposed animal model, to P1V and P2V infection. Groups of weanling rabbits were inoculated intranasally (IN) with P1V or P2V at low (10(2.5) TCID50), medium (10(4.5)TCID50), or high titer (10(6.5)TCID50). Rabbits inoculated with medium and high titers shed virus in nasal secretions and developed serous to hemorrhagic nasal discharge and severe respiratory distress, followed by progressive apathy and high lethality. Clinical signs appeared around days 3-6 post-inoculation (pi) and lasted up to the day of death or euthanasia (around days 5-10). Virus shedding and clinical signs were less frequent in rabbits inoculated with low virus titers. Viremia was detected in all groups, with different frequencies. Viral DNA was detected in the feces of a few animals inoculated with P1V and P2V, low titer, and with P2V at high titer. Gross necropsy findings and histological examination showed diffuse interstitial fibrousing pneumonia with necrosuppurative bronchopneumonia and intestinal liquid content. Neutralizing antibodies were detected in all inoculated animals surviving beyond day 9 pi. These results show that rabbits are highly susceptible to VACV isolated from horses, and develop severe respiratory and systemic disease upon IN inoculation. Thus, rabbits may be used to study selected aspects of VACV infection and disease.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) and canine circovirus (CanineCV) have been described worldwide in multi-systemic disease in dogs. Both agents may be occasionally associated with other viral pathogens, but reports of coinfection by CDV and CanineCV associated with disease are rare. In this article, we report a coinfection between CDV and CanineCV detected during an investigation of viral agents involved in multisystemic disease in dogs in Southern Brazil. Molecular testing by PCR in lungs and intestines of 77 dogs necropsied in pathology services (2015-2020) revealed several single and mixed viral infections, including a CDV/CanineCV coinfection. In the case reported here, gross and histological findings were compatible with CDV pathology (bronchointerstitial pneumonia and viral intracytoplasmatic inclusions in pneumocytes and transitional epithelial cells of urinary bladder). CanineCV DNA and CDV antigens were detected in lung and intestine fragments by PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. CanineCV PCR amplicons subjected to nucleotide sequencing showed > 98.6% nucleotide identity with CanineCV sequences from GenBank. Although the role of CanineCV in the pathogenesis of the reported case could not be determined, our results show that CanineCV may be associated with other viral infections in cases of multisystemic disease in dogs. These results reinforce the circulation of CanineCV in dogs in Brazil and highlight the importance of including this virus in the list of differential diagnoses of respiratory and gastroenteric infectious diseases in dogs.

Bovine herpetic mammillits is a self-limiting cutaneous disease of the udder and teats of cows associated with bovine herpesvirus 2 (BoHV-2) whose pathogenesis is poorly understood. This article describes the use of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) to study the pathogenesis of BoHV-2 infection. Twelve weanling female guinea pigs inoculated subcutaneously with BoHV-2 in the genitalia and teats developed local hyperemia, edema, vesicles, ulcers and scabs. Infectious virus was recovered between days 3 and 7 post-infection (pi) from the genital area (9/12) and teats (1/12); and all inoculated animals seroconverted (virus-neutralizing titers of 16-128). Histological examination of lesions revealed lymphoplasmacytic perivascular infiltrates and intranuclear inclusion bodies in keratinocytes. PCR examination of tissues collected at day 35 pi detected latent viral DNA predominantly in lumbosacral spinal segments. In another experiment, eight females inoculated with BoHV-2 in the genitalia and treated with dexamethasone (Dx) at day 35 pi developed mild to moderate local signs, yet no virus could be recovered from lesions. PCR examination of spinal segments from these animals confirmed the presence of latent viral DNA. These results demonstrate that guinea pigs are susceptible to BoHV-2 infection and therefore may be used to study selected aspects of BoHV-2 biology.

Canine parvovirus type 2c (CPV-2c) emerged in Europe in the early 2000's and rapidly spread out worldwide. Clinical and molecular data have demonstrated its circulation in Brazilian dogs, yet detailed descriptions of cases are still lacking. This article describes the epidemiological, clinical and pathological features of 24 cases of CPV-2c-associated disease in dogs submitted to veterinary clinics and laboratory diagnosis in southern Brazil (2014-2016). Most affected dogs presented signs/lesions suggestive of parvovirus enteritis: diarrhea, vomiting, hyperemia and hemorrhage of the serous membrane of the small intestine, diffuse segmental granulation, atrophy of the villi, necrosis and fusion of crypts, squamous metaplasia and epithelial syncytia. A number of cases presented features divergent from the classical presentations, including a wide variation in the color of feces (reddish and/or yellowish, light-brownish, orange-brown and brownish), involvement of adults (4/24) and vaccinated dogs (12/24), extensive involvement of the small intestine (8/20) and the presence of pulmonary edema (7/24) and convulsions (3/24). Feces and intestinal fragments submitted to PCR for the CPV-2 VP2 gene and to virus isolation in cell culture yielded positive results in 100% and 58.3% (14/24) of the cases, respectively. Nucleotide sequencing revealed a high nucleotide identity in VP2 (99.4 to 100%) and a consistent mutation at amino acid 426 (asparagine to glutamic acid), considered a signature of CPV-2c. These results confirm the involvement of CPV-2c in the described cases and demonstrate the importance of CPV-2c infection among Brazilian dogs, calling attention of veterinarians to correctly diagnose the disease, mainly considering the frequent atypical presentations.(AU)


O parvovírus canino tipo 2c (CPV-2c) surgiu na Europa no início do ano 2000 e rapidamente se espalhou pelas populações de cães ao redor do mundo. Dados clínicos e moleculares demonstraram a sua circulação em cães brasileiros, porém descrições detalhadas desses casos ainda são escassas. Este artigo descreve os aspectos epidemiológicos, clínicos e patológicos de 24 casos de doença gastroentérica associada com a infecção pelo CPV-2c em cães atendidos em clínicas veterinárias e submetidos ao diagnóstico laboratorial no Sul do Brasil (2014-2016). A maioria dos cães afetados apresentaram sinais e/ou lesões sugestivas de enterite por parvovírus: diarreia, vômitos, hiperemia e hemorragia na membrana serosa do intestino delgado, granulação segmentar difusa, atrofia das vilosidades, necrose e fusão de criptas, metaplasia escamosa e sincícios epiteliais. Alguns casos apresentaram características divergentes das apresentações clássicas, incluindo uma grande variação na cor das fezes (avermelhada e/ou amarelada, marrom-claro, marrom-alaranjada ou amarronzada), a participação dos adultos (4/24) e cães vacinados (12/24), um amplo envolvimento do intestino delgado (8/20), a presença de edema pulmonar (7/24) e convulsões (3/24). As fezes e fragmentos intestinais foram submetidos ao teste de PCR para o gene VP2 do CPV-2, e ao isolamento do vírus em cultura de células produziram resultados positivos em 100% e 58,3% (14/24) dos casos, respectivamente. O sequenciamento dos nucleótidos revelou uma alta identidade de nucleótidos na VP2 (99,4-100%) e uma mutação no aminoácido 426 (asparagina para ácido glutâmico), considerada uma assinatura de CPV-2c. Estes resultados confirmam o envolvimento do CPV-2c nos casos descritos e demonstra a importância da infecção pelo CPV-2c entre os cães do Brasil, chamando a atenção de veterinários para diagnosticar corretamente a doença, principalmente considerando-se as apresentações atípicas frequentes.(AU)

The susceptibility of rabbits to two isolates of Vaccinia virus (VACV) recovered from cutaneous disease in horses in Southern Brazil was investigated. Rabbits were inoculated in the ear skin with both VACV isolates, either in single or mixed infection. All inoculated animals presented local skin lesions characterized by hyperaemia, papules, vesicles, pustules and ulcers. Infectious virus was detected in the lungs and intestine of rabbits that died during acute disease. Histological examination of the skin revealed changes characteristic of those associated with members of the genus Orthopoxvirus. These results demonstrate that rabbits develop skin disease accompanied by systemic signs upon intradermal inoculation of these two equine VACV isolates, either alone or in combination, opening the way for using rabbits to study selected aspects of the biology and pathogenesis of VACV infection.

Canid herpesvirus 1 (CHV-1) is a widespread pathogen of dogs and produces infertility, abortions and severe systemic disease in young puppies. Clinical data indicate the circulation of CHV-1 among Brazilian dogs yet definitive diagnosis has rarely been accomplished. This article describes the clinicopathological findings of four independent cases/outbreaks of neonatal disease by CHV-1 in Bulldog puppies followed by virus identification and genetic characterization. Three events occurred in a kennel holding dogs of different breeds at reproductive age (March 2013, October 2013 and April 2014). Puppies from three French or English Bulldog litters, aging 9 to 30 days were affected, presenting dyspnea, agonic breathing, pale mucous, abdominal pain and tension, evolving to death within about 24 hours. At necropsy, the puppies presented necrohemorrhagic hepatitis, multifocal and moderate necrohemorrhagic nephritis and fibrinonecrotic interstitial pneumonia. Virus isolation was positive in clinical specimens from one litter and CHV-1 DNA was detected by PCR in tissues from all four cases. Virus-neutralizing assays with samples of the affected kennel revealed 9/12 adult animals with high antibody titers to CHV-1. Nucleotide sequencing of glycoprotein B, C and D genes revealed 99-100% of identity among the viruses and with CHV-1 sequences available in GenBank. Phylogenetic analyses of gC sequences showed a segregation of the samples, even among three isolates from the same kennel. These findings support CHV-1 infection as the cause of disease and death in these dog litters, reinforcing the need for correct etiologic diagnosis, prevention and immunization against CHV-1 in dogs from Southern Brazil.


O herpesvírus canino (CHV-1) é um patógeno de cães que possui distribuição mundial e que causa infertilidade, abortos e doença sistêmica severa em filhotes de cães. Achados clínicos tem indicado a circulação do CHV-1 em cães no Brasil, embora o diagnóstico definitivo seja raramente determinado. Este artigo descreve os achados clinicopatológicos de quatro casos/surtos independentes de morte neonatal de filhotes de cães da raça Bulldog causados pelo CHV-1, a identificação e a caracterização genética do vírus. Três eventos ocorreram no mesmo canil que abriga animais de diferentes raças em idade reprodutiva (março de 2013, outubro de 2013 e abril de 2014). Filhotes de três ninhadas de Bulldog Francês e/ou Inglês, com idade de 9 a 30 dias, foram afetados e apresentaram dispneia, respiração agônica, mucosas pálidas, dor e tensão abdominal, que evoluíram para morte dos cães dentro de, aproximadamente, 24 horas. Na necropsia foram observados hepatite necro-hemorrágica, nefrite necro-hemorrágica multifocal e moderada e pneumonia intersticial fibrinonecrótica. O isolamento viral foi positivo em amostras clínicas de um filhote e DNA de CHV-1 foi detectado por PCR em tecidos de filhotes de todos os surtos. Teste de soroneutralização com amostras de soro de cães provenientes do canil afetado revelaram que nove de 12 animais adultos possuíam altos títulos de anticorpos para o CHV-1. Sequenciamento de nucleotídeos do gene das glicoproteínas B, C e D revelaram 99-100% de identidade entre as amostras e com as sequências de CHV-1 disponíveis no GenBank. A análise filogenética baseada na sequência do gene da glicoproteína C mostrou uma segregação das amostras, mesmo entre os três isolados de vírus provenientes do mesmo canil. Esses achados demonstram que o CHV-1 é a causa da doença e da morte dos filhotes, reforçando a necessidade do correto diagnóstico etiológico e a implementação de medidas de prevenção e imunização contra o CHV-1 em cães no sul do Brasil.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of connexin 32 (Cx 32) during remyelination of the peripheral nervous system, through a local injection of either 0,1% ethidium bromide solution or saline in the sciatic nerve of Cx 32 knockout mice. Euthanasia was performed ranging from 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 21 to 30 days after injection. Histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopical techniques were used to analyze the development of the lesions. Within the sciatic nerves, Schwann cells initially showed signs of intoxication and rejected their sheaths; after seven days, some thin newly formed myelin sheaths with uneven compactness and redundant loops (tomacula) were conspicuous. We concluded that the regeneration of lost myelin sheaths within the PNS followed the pattern already reported for this model in other laboratory species. Therefore, these results suggest that absence of Cx 32 did not interfere with the normal pattern of remyelination in this model in young mice.

Este estudo teve como objetivos determinar os tumores mais prevalentes em gatos e relacionar os tumores mamários a alguns de seus fatores prognósticos. Os arquivos do Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária (LPV) da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) foram revisados e um total de 1.427 protocolos de biopsias e necropsias de felinos, entre 2000 e 2011, foi encontrado. Com base nas informações dos arquivos, foi estabelecida a relação entre os tumores e alguns fatores como sexo, idade, raça, estado reprodutivo, uso de contraceptivos, número e localização das glândulas afetadas, ulcerações, tamanho do neoplasma, metástases distantes e para os linfonodos. Assim, observou-se que os tumores de mama foram o segundo diagnóstico mais prevalente, após os tumores de pele. Todos os gatos com tumores mamários eram fêmeas, sendo os sem raça definida e os idosos os mais afetados. Os neoplasmas malignos foram diagnosticados com maior frequência, seguidos pelos tumores não neoplásicos e pelos neoplasmas benignos. Os tumores menores eram, na sua maioria, carcinomas. Ulcerações estavam presentes não só em neoplasmas malignos, mas também em alterações não neoplásicas. Metástases distantes foram encontradas principalmente nos pulmões e na pele.


This study aimed to determine the most prevalent mammary tumors in cats and associate them to some prognostic factors. The files from the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária (LPV) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) were reviewed, and 1.427 feline biopsies and autopsy protocols between the years 2000 and 2011 were found. Based on the information retrieved from the files, a relationship was established among the tumors and some prognostic factors such as sex, age, breed, reproductive status, use of contraceptives, number and location of affected glands, ulcers, size of the neoplasm, distant metastases, and affected lymph nodes. Thus, it was observed that mammary cancer is the second most prevalent diagnosis, following skin tumors. All cats with mammary tumors were female, being the elderly and mixed breed the most affected. Malignant neoplasms were the most frequently diagnosed, followed by non-neoplastic tumors, and benign neoplasms. Smaller tumors were mostly carcinomas. Ulcerations were present not only in malignant neoplasms but also in non-neoplastic changes. Distant metastases were found mainly to the lungs and skin.

Papilomavírus bovino tipo 4 (BPV-4) é responsável pelo desenvolvimento de papilomas no trato alimentar superior (TAS) de bovinos. Os passos necessários para o crescimento, o desenvolvimento e a regressão dos papilomas estão intimamente relacionados com o estado imunológico do animal. A ingestão de samambaia (Pteridium aquilinum) tem sido relacionada como o principal fator envolvido na persistência da infecção pelo BPV-4 no TAS. A teoria que estabelece a relação entre papilomatose alimentar e a formação de CCEs sugere a produção de um estado imunossupressivo crônico pela planta, permitindo a persistência dos papilomas no TAS. Os papilomas serviriam então como sítios de desenvolvimento dos CCEs através da interação entre as proteínas do BPV-4 e os carcinógenos da samambaia. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a relação entre a quantidade de linfócitos circulantes e a papilomatose alimentar em casos de intoxicação espontânea crônica por P. aquilinum em bovinos com CCE no TAS. Quarenta bovinos com CCEs no TAS foram avaliados quanto à idade, à intensidade da papilomatose alimentar no TAS e ao leucograma. Três bovinos tinham leucopenia e um apresentava neutrofilia. A média de linfócitos foi de 5.395 (±1.696) na papilomatose leve, 4.560 (±1.561) na moderada e 5.007 (±1.786) na acentuada. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre o grau de papilomatose, a idade e a quantidade de linfócitos circulantes. Imunossupressão por linfopenia foi um achado esporádico (três casos) neste estudo. Os resultados indicam que a persistência da papilomatose alimentar em casos espontâneos de intoxicação crônica por samambaia em bovinos não tem relação com a quantidade de linfócitos circulantes e que talvez esteja relacionada a outros fatores imunológicos.


Bovine papillomavirus type-4 (BPV-4) is responsible for the development of papillomas in the upper digestive tract (UDT) of cattle. The necessary steps for the development, growth and regression of papillomas are intimately related with the immunological status of the animal. The consumption of bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) has been pointed out as the major factor involved in the persistence of BPV-4 infection of the UDT. The theory involving the relationship between alimentary papillomas and the formation of squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) suggests the persistence of alimentary papillomatosis through a chronic immunosupressive lymphopenic state induced by bracken fern. The papillomas would serve then as a development site of SCCs through the interaction of BPV-4 oncoproteins and bracken carcinogens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between lymphopenia and alimentary papillomatosis in spontaneous cases of chronic bracken fern poisoning of cattle. The age, intensity of papillomatosis and the leukon were evaluated of 40 cattle with SCCs of the UDT. Three animals had leukopenia and one had neutrophilia. The mean lymphocyte count (and standart deviation) of mild, moderate and severe papillomatosis was 5,395(±1,696)/mm³, 4,560(±1,561)/mm³ and 5,007(±1,786)/mm³, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between the intensity of alimentary papillomasis, age and the lymphocyte count. Immunosupression by lymphopenia was a sporadic finding (three cases) in the present study. The results demonstrate that the persistence of alimentary papilomatosis in spontaneous cases of bracken fern-related SCCs of the UDT is not related to lymphopenia and it may be related to other immunological factors.

Neste relato, é descrito um caso de mielose eritrêmica em um gato. Essa doença é considerada de aparecimento raro na clínica médica veterinária. Uma gata, raça Siamês, de um ano de idade, foi atendida com sinais clínicos de acentuada anemia, emaciação e febre. Havia marcada anemia arregenerativa, com grande número de precursores eritróides e megaloblastos atípicos, identificados pelo hemograma. O mielograma revelou população eritrocitária acima de 85 por cento, quando comparada com a mielóide. A citologia aspirativa por agulha fina dos linfonodos revelou a presença de células eritróides imaturas. Na necropsia, o baço, os linfonodos e a medula óssea estavam obliterados por células neoplásicas. O diagnóstico de mielose eritrêmica foi dado com base nos achados clínico-laboratoriais e anatomopatológicos.


The aim of this research is to describe a case of erythremic myelosis in a cat. This disease is considered rare in veterinary clinics. A one-year-old female siamese cat was brought to the veterinary hospital with clinical signs of severe anemia, emaciation and fever. The blood panel revealed marked nonregenerative anemia with elevated number of atypical erythroid progenitors and megacaryoblasts. Elevated atypical erythroid over myeloid precursors (above 85 percent) were also found in bone marrow biopsy. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of lymph nodes revealed immature erythoid cells. At necropsy, spleen, lymph nodes and bone marrow were obliterated by neoplastic cells. The diagnosis of erythremic myelosis was given by clinical, laboratorial and pathological findings.

Tumores mamários são comuns em cães, e constituem o neoplasma mais frequente em cadelas. Este estudo tem como objetivos principais estabelecer a prevalência dos tumores mamários, e dos diferentes tipos histológicos (neoplásicos e não-neoplásicos), diagnosticados em cães no Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (LPV-UFSM). Foram avaliados 1.304 protocolos de exames histopatológicos recebidos em 1990-2008 e 132 protocolos de necropsias realizadas em 2000-2008. Deles foram obtidos a raça, o sexo e a idade dos cães, a localização do tumor na cadeia mamária, o diagnóstico morfológico e a ocorrência de metástases. Nos protocolos de exame histopatológico, foram diagnosticados 1.495 tumores, considerando que alguns cães tinham mais de um tipo de tumor, sendo 1.465 neoplásicos e 30 não-neoplásicos. Dos neoplásicos, 390 (26,6 por cento) eram benignos e 1.075 (73,3 por cento) eram malignos, estabelecendo-se uma relação benigno: maligno de 1:2,75. Das 1.125 necropsias de cães realizadas em 2000-2008, 132 (11,6 por cento) protocolos tinham descrições de tumor de mama, perfazendo 152 diagnósticos morfológicos, dos quais 150 eram neoplásicos e dois eram não-neoplásicos. Carcinoma simples foi o tipo histológico mais prevalente tanto em biópsias como em necropsias. Nas necropsias, foram observadas metástases para linfonodos em 39 casos (29,5 por cento) e para órgãos distantes em 64 casos (53,3 por cento).


Mammary gland tumors are common in dogs and are the most common type of neoplasm of female dogs. The main purposes of this study were to establish the prevalence of the mammary gland tumors, as well as of its different histologic types (neoplastic and non-neoplastic), diagnosed in the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. There were 1,304 biopsy reports of mammary gland tumors during 1990-2008 and 132 necropsy reports of dogs with mammary tumors in 2000-2008. Data about breed, gender, and age of dogs, tumor localization, morphologic diagnosis, and metastasis occurrence were analyzed. In the biopsy cases, 1,495 tumors were diagnosed, considering the presence of more than one type of tumor in some of the dogs. From those, 1,465 were neoplastic and 30 were non-neoplastic. Within the neoplasms, 390 (26.6 percent) were benign and 1,075 (73.3 percent) were malignant. The benign/malignant ratio was 1:2.75. During the years 2000-2008, 1,125 necropsies of dogs were performed, 132 (11.64 percent) of which with mammary gland tumors. There were 152 morphologic diagnoses, being 150 of neoplastic and two of non-neoplastic lesions. Simple carcinoma was the most prevalent histologic type, both among biopsy and necropsy cases. On necropsy cases, metastases to lymph nodes and distant organs were seen in 39 (29.5 percent) and 64 (53,3 percent) cases, respectively.

Através de um estudo retrospectivo dos casos de biópsias e necropsias de cães recebidos no Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, constatou-se a ocorrência de dois casos confirmados e de quatro casos suspeitos de pitiose gastrintestinal canina. Os dois casos diagnosticados e publicados tiveram a etiologia confirmada através da cultura e indução de zoosporogênese ou por nested-PCR. Neste estudo utilizou-se a técnica de imuno-histoquímica com anticorpo policlonal anti-Pythium insidiosum para confirmação da etiologia dos quatro casos suspeitos. A epidemiologia, sinais clínicos, lesões macroscópicas e microscópicas, características histoquímicas e imuno-histoquímicas e diagnósticos diferenciais são relatados e discutidos.


Four suspect and two confirmed cases of gastrointestinal pythiosis were found in a retrospective study of biopsy and necropsy cases of dogs received in the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. The two diagnosed and published cases have had the etiology confirmed by culture and zoosporogenesis induction or by nested-PCR. On this study, the etiologic diagnosis of four suspect cases was confirmed by immunohistochemistry using anti-Pythium insidiosum policlonal antibody. Epidemiology, clinical signs, gross and microscopic lesions, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and differential diagnoses are reported and discussed.

Foram estudados casos espontâneos de intoxicação crônica por samambaia (Pteridium aquilinum) em bovinos nas formas clinicopatológicas de carcinoma de células escamosas (CCE) no trato alimentar superior (TAS) e de hematúria enzoótica bovina (HEB), provenientes da Mesorregião Centro Ocidental Rio-Grandense e encaminhados ao Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Para o estudo clínico foram avaliados os sinais clínicos de bovinos com CCEs no TAS e com HEB e realizados hemogramas na fase terminal da doença. Os principais sinais clínicos nos bovinos com CCEs no TAS foram emagrecimento progressivo, atonia ruminal, tosse, disfagia, timpanismo e regurgitação. Nos bovinos com HEB, hematúria foi o principal sinal, observado em todos os casos, seguido de emagrecimento progressivo. No exame hematológico, 33,33 por cento dos bovinos com CCEs no TAS e 66,67 por cento dos bovinos com HEB apresentaram anemia arregenerativa. Alterações no leucograma ocorreram em alguns casos, mas linfopenia foi um achado infreqüente em ambas as formas de intoxicação. Para o estudo morfológico, foram avaliadas as bexigas de 46 bovinos com CCEs no TAS e de 11 bovinos com HEB. Macroscopicamente, 16/46 bexigas dos casos de CCEs no TAS apresentaram alterações macroscópicas, que consistiam nódulos vermelhos ou pálidos, hemorragia e papilomas; urina vermelha foi observada na necropsia de apenas três casos). Nos casos de HEB, os achados macroscópicos vesicais foram nódulos vermelhos, massas neoplásicas focalmente extensas, urina vermelha, papilomas, hemorragias e ruptura de bexiga; pielonefrite e hidronefrose foram observados em poucos casos. Histologicamente, 44/46 (95,65 por cento) bexigas de bovinos com CCEs no TAS apresentaram 22 tipos diferentes de alterações morfológicas, que foram classificadas em alterações neoplásicas (5/22) e alterações não-neoplásicas (17/22); essas últimas foram divididas em alterações epiteliais não-neoplásicas ...


Spontaneous cases of chronic poisoning by Pteridium aquilinum in cattle were studied. The clinical forms of the disease were squamous cell carcinoma (SCCs) of the upper digestive tract (UDT) and bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH). The cases were from the midland Region of the Midwest of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, and were submitted to the Laboratório de Patologia Veterinária of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Clinical signs and blood work were evaluated at terminal phase of disease. Cattle with UDT SCCs had progressive weigth loss, ruminal atony, cough, dysphagia, bloating, and regurgitation. In cattle with BEH, hematuria was observed in all cases, followed by progressive weight loss. Non-regenerative anemia was detected in 33.33 percent of the cattle with UDT SCCs form and in 66.66 percent of the cattle with BEH form. Changes in white blood count occurred in some cases but drop in lymphocyte numbers was uncommon in both forms of disease. For the morphological study, urinary bladders from 46 cattle with UDT SCCs and 11 cattle with BEH were analyzed. Grossly, 16/46 bladders from the UDT SCCs form had gross lesions (red or pale vesical nodules, hemorrhages, and papilomas; red urine was detected at necropsy of only three cases). In BEH form, the bladder had nodules, large neoplastic masses, red urine, papilomas, and hemorrhages. Pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis were seen in a few cases. Microscopically, in the UDT SCCs form, 44/46 (95.65 percent) bladders had 22 different types of morphological changes, characterized by neoplastic lesions (5/22) and non-neoplastic lesions (17/22); the latter were subdivided in non-neoplastic epithelial changes (6/17), general changes of the lamina propria (6/17), and inflammatory changes (5/17). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of connexin 32 (Cx 32) during remyelination of the peripheral nervous system, through a local injection of either 0,1 percent ethidium bromide solution or saline in the sciatic nerve of Cx 32 knockout mice. Euthanasia was performed ranging from 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 21 to 30 days after injection. Histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopical techniques were used to analyze the development of the lesions. Within the sciatic nerves, Schwann cells initially showed signs of intoxication and rejected their sheaths; after seven days, some thin newly formed myelin sheaths with uneven compactness and redundant loops (tomacula) were conspicuous. We concluded that the regeneration of lost myelin sheaths within the PNS followed the pattern already reported for this model in other laboratory species. Therefore, these results suggest that absence of Cx 32 did not interfere with the normal pattern of remyelination in this model in young mice.


Este estudo visou avaliar o papel da conexina 32 (Cx 32) durante a remielinização no sistema nervoso periférico. Uma injeção local de 0,1 por cento de solução de brometo de etídio foi realizada no nervo ciático de camundongos deletados para a Cx 32, com eutanásia dos animais aos 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 21 e 30 dias pós-injeção. Avaliações histoquímicas, imunoistoquímicas, por imunofluorescência e por microscopia eletrônica de transmissão foram utilizadas na análise do desenvolvimento das lesões. Nos nervos ciáticos, células de Schwann mostraram inicialmente sinais de intoxicação e rejeitaram suas bainhas. Após sete dias, observaram-se finas bainhas neoformadas, com compactação desigual e alças redundantes (tomácula). Conclui-se que a regeneração de bainhas de mielina perdidas no SNP seguiu o padrão já relatado deste modelo em outras espécies de laboratório. Portanto, estes resultados sugerem que a ausência da Cx 32 não interferiu com o padrão normal de remielinização em camundongos jovens neste modelo.

Uma cadela de dois anos de idade, sem raça definida, apresentou disfagia e aumento de volume da região cervical ventral, correspondendo à região tireoidiana. Duas massas localizadas nessa região foram removidas cirurgicamente. O cão morreu poucos dias após a cirurgia e não foi necropsiado. O diagnóstico de carcinossarcoma de tireóide baseou-se na presença de componentes neoplásicos epiteliais e mesenquimais malignos, os quais foram confirmados pela reação imunoistoquímica positiva para citoqueratina e vimentina, respectivamente. A origem tireoidiana foi confirmada pela imunomarcação positiva para tireoglobulina nas células epiteliais foliculares e no colóide. Este é um neoplasma raramente diagnosticado em cães.


A two year-old female mongrel dog was presented with dysphagia and focal swelling at the thyroid region. Two masses were surgically removed from that site. The dog died a few days after surgery and it was not submitted to necropsy. The diagnosis of thyroid carcinosarcoma was based on malignant epithelial and mesenchymal cell components of the neoplasm and confirmed by immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin and vimentin, respectively. The thyroid origin was confirmed based on the positive immunostaining for thyroglobulin on the follicular epithelial cells and colloid. This is a neoplasm rarely diagnosed in dogs.
