RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study explored factors related to Korean adults' smoking patterns and also the reasons for using new types of tobacco products. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. METHODS: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2021 were used. The prevalence of the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or heated tobacco products (HTPs) alone or in combination with conventional cigarettes (CC) and the reasons for using new tobacco products are presented. Factors associated with using new types of tobacco products alone or in combination with CC compared to exclusive CC users were identified using multinomial logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of current smoking was 25.54% in 2013 and 23.05% in 2021, with no significant change. The prevalence of CC decreased from 23.39% in 2013 to 15.77% in 2021. The prevalence of new tobacco use in combination with CC did not show a definite trend. The prevalence of exclusive use of new tobacco was <1% until 2018 and has rapidly increased thereafter. Of the HTPs users, 46.68% responded with 'no cigarette smell' as the main reason for HTPs use, followed by 'It seems less harmful than cigarette' (19.19%), and 'It seems to be helpful for quitting smoking' (15.04%). Of the e-cigarette users, 45.19% responded 'It seems to be helpful for quitting smoking' as the main reason for e-cigarette use, followed by 'It is less harmful than cigarettes' (19.98%). Compared to CC users, new tobacco users were younger, had a higher household income or education, and used more nutritional supplements. CONCLUSION: Regulations for newer tobacco products are more lenient than for traditional cigarettes, leading to misunderstandings, especially among women and young people. To increase awareness of the risks of these products, specific policies such as disclosure of ingredients, ban on online sales, and increase in consumption tax, are needed.

RESUMEN

This study developed probabilistic models to predict Salmonella growth in processed meat products formulated with varying concentrations of NaCl and NaNO2. A five-strain mixture of Salmonella was inoculated in nutrient broth supplemented with NaCl (0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.25%, and 1.75%) and NaNO2 (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 ppm). The inoculated samples were then incubated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions at 4°C, 7°C, 10°C, 12°C, and 15°C for up to 60 days. Growth (assigned the value of 1) or no growth (assigned the value of 0) for each combination was evaluated by turbidity. These growth response data were analyzed with a logistic regression to evaluate the effect of NaCl and NaNO2 on Salmonella growth. The results from the developed model were compared to the observed data obtained from the frankfurters to evaluate the performance of the model. Results from the developed model showed that a single application of NaNO2 at low concentrations did not inhibit Salmonella growth, whereas NaCl significantly (p<0.05) inhibited Salmonella growth at 10°C, 12°C, and 15°C, regardless of the presence of oxygen. At 4°C and 7°C, Salmonella growth was not observed in either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. When NaNO2 was combined with NaCl, the probability of Salmonella growth decreased. The validation value confirmed that the performance of the developed model was appropriate. This study indicates that the developed probabilistic models should be useful for describing the combinational effect of NaNO2 and NaCl on inhibiting Salmonella growth in processed meat products.

RESUMEN

Significant SNPs associated with Warner-Bratzler (WB) shear force and sensory traits were confirmed for Hanwoo beef (Korean cattle). A Bonferroni-corrected genome-wide significant association (p<1.3×10(-6)) was detected with only one single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on chromosome 5 for WB shear force. A slightly higher number of SNPs was significantly (p<0.001) associated with WB shear force than with other sensory traits. Further, 50, 25, 29, and 34 SNPs were significantly associated with WB shear force, tenderness, juiciness, and flavor likeness, respectively. The SNPs between p = 0.001 and p = 0.0001 thresholds explained 3% to 9% of the phenotypic variance, while the most significant SNPs accounted for 7% to 12% of the phenotypic variance. In conclusion, because WB shear force and sensory evaluation were moderately affected by a few loci and minimally affected by other loci, further studies are required by using a large sample size and high marker density.

RESUMEN

In this study, we investigated the effects of 8-weeks of swimming exercise on neurogenesis in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and on the levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) and synapsin I protein in the olfactory bulb (OB) of adult rats at a series of relevant time points (2 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months). Ninety-six male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups: (1) a control group (COG; n = 48, n = 8 for each time point) and (2) a swimming exercise group (SEG; total n = 48; n = 8 for each time point). SEG performed swimming exercise for 5 days per week over a period of 8 weeks. We found that the number of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine-5'-monophosphate (BrdU)- and doublecortin (DCX)-positive cells was significantly higher in SEG than in COG at all time points (Day 2, Week 1, Week 2, Week 4, Month 3, and Month 6; p < 0.001). Furthermore, NGF and synapsin I protein levels were significantly higher in SEG on Day 2, and Weeks 1, 2, and 4 than in COG (p < 0.05 for each time point). Our findings suggest that regular swimming exercise in adult rats increases neurogenesis, neuronal survival, and neuronal maintenance in the SVZ; furthermore, swimming exercise increases the levels of NGF and synapsin I in the OB.

RESUMEN

Milk protein is a well-known precursor protein for the generation of bioactive peptides using lactic acid bacteria. This study investigated the antioxidant activity of bovine casein hydrolysate after fermentation with Bifidobacterium longum KACC91563 using the 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay and total phenolic content (TPC). The antioxidant activities of the 24-h and 48-h hydrolysates were higher than that of the 4-h hydrolysate (2,045.5 and 1,629.3 µM gallic acid equivalents, respectively, vs. 40.3 µM) in the ABTS assay. In contrast, TPC values showed activities of 43.2 and 52.4 µM gallic acid equivalents for the 4-h and 24-h hydrolysates, respectively. Three fractions (≥10 kDa, ≥3 but <10 kDa, and <3 kDa) were separated from the 24-h hydrolysate by ultrafiltration. Among these fractions, the <3 kDa fraction exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (936.7 µM) compared with the other fractions (42.1 and 34.2 µM for >10 kDa and 3-10 kDa fractions, respectively). Through liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry analysis, 2 peptides, VLSLSQSKVLPVPQK and VLSLSQSKVLPVPQKAVPYPQRDMPIQA, containing the fragment VLPVPQ that has antioxidant properties, were identified in the <3kDa fraction after 24h of hydrolysis. The present study demonstrates the possibility of antioxidant peptide production from bovine casein using Bifidobacterium longum.

RESUMEN

Globally, cardiac arrest (CA) is a leading cause of death and disability. Asphyxial CA (ACA)-induced kidney damage is a crucial factor in reducing the survival rate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of antioxidant enzymes in histopathological renal damage in an ACA rat model at different time points. A total of 88 rats were divided into five groups and exposed to ACA except for the sham group. To evaluate glomerular function and oxidative stress, serum levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (Crtn) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in renal tissues were measured. To determine histopathological damage, hematoxylin and eosin staining, periodic acid-Schiff staining, and Masson's trichrome staining were performed. Expression levels of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD-1), superoxide dismutase-2 (SOD-2), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were measured by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Survival rate of the experimental rats was reduced to 80% at 6 h, 55% at 12 h, 42.9% at 1 day, and 33% at 2 days after return of spontaneous circulation. Levels of BUN, Crtn, and MDA started to increase significantly in the early period of CA induction. Renal histopathological damage increased markedly from 6 h until two days post-CA. Additionally, expression levels of antioxidant enzymes were significantly decreased at 6 h, 12 h, 1 day, and 2 days after CA. CA-induced oxidative stress and decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes (SOD-1, SOD-2, CAT, GPx) from 6 h to two days could be possible mediators of severe renal tissue damage and increased mortality rate.

RESUMEN

An experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of powdered vegetable dip sauces to improve the tenderness of spent-hen breast meat. Our overall purpose was to find lower-priced materials for the tenderization of spent-hen breast meat. The spent-hen breast meat was dipped into vegetable powder for 24 h at 4°C, and then the samples were analyzed. In the results for vegetable-powder treated samples, those treated with papain and pineapple had higher (P ≤ 0.05) myofibrillar fragmentation indices compared with those of the other samples. The kiwi-, pineapple-, and Flammulina velutipes-powder (winter mushroom) treated samples had new peptides of about 32 kDa and degradation to 30 kDa. Also, the Flammulina velutipes-powder treated samples showed new peptides of 15 kDa. These data imply that Flammulina velutipes is superior for common use than papain or pineapple for the tenderization of spent-hen meat.

RESUMEN

Neuropsychiatric disorders are increasingly conceptualized as overlapping spectra sharing multi-level neurobiological alterations. However, whether transdiagnostic cortical alterations covary in a biologically meaningful way is currently unknown. Here, we studied co-alteration networks across six neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, reflecting pathological structural covariance. In 12,024 patients and 18,969 controls from the ENIGMA consortium, we observed that co-alteration patterns followed normative connectome organization and were anchored to prefrontal and temporal disease epicenters. Manifold learning revealed frontal-to-temporal and sensory/limbic-to-occipitoparietal transdiagnostic gradients, differentiating shared illness effects on cortical thickness along these axes. The principal gradient aligned with a normative cortical thickness covariance gradient and established a transcriptomic link to cortico-cerebello-thalamic circuits. Moreover, transdiagnostic gradients segregated functional networks involved in basic sensory, attentional/perceptual, and domain-general cognitive processes, and distinguished between regional cytoarchitectonic profiles. Together, our findings indicate that shared illness effects occur in a synchronized fashion and along multiple levels of hierarchical cortical organization.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The optimal dose of remifentanil to attenuate the cardiovascular responses to tracheal intubation in pre-eclamptic patients undergoing Caesarean delivery under general anaesthesia has not been established. We compared the effects of two low doses of remifentanil on the cardiovascular responses to tracheal intubation and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: Forty-eight women with severe pre-eclampsia were randomly assigned to receive either remifentanil 0.5 µg kg⁻¹ (R0.5 group, n=24) or 1 µg kg⁻¹ (R1.0 group, n=24) over 30 s before induction of anaesthesia using thiopental 5 mg kg⁻¹ and succinylcholine 1.5 mg kg⁻¹. Systolic arterial pressure (SAP), heart rate (HR), and plasma catecholamine concentrations were measured. Neonatal effects were assessed using Apgar scores and umbilical cord blood gas analysis. RESULTS: SAP was decreased by induction of anaesthesia and increased by tracheal intubation in both groups. The peak SAP after intubation was greater in the R0.5 group than in the R1.0 group, whereas it did not exceed baseline values in either group. HR increased significantly above baseline in both groups with no significant differences between the groups. Three subjects in the R1.0 group received ephedrine due to hypotension (SAP < 90 mm Hg). Norepinephrine concentrations remained unaltered after intubation and increased significantly at delivery with no significant differences between the groups. Neonatal Apgar scores and umbilical arterial and venous pH and blood gas values were comparable between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Both doses of remifentanil effectively attenuated haemodynamic responses to tracheal intubation with transient neonatal respiratory depression in pre-eclamptic patients undergoing Caesarean delivery under general anaesthesia. The 1.0 µg kg⁻¹ dose was associated with hypotension in three of 24 subjects.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The growth and development of adipose tissue are thought to be associated with angiogenesis and extracellular matrix remodeling. As the composition of the herbal extract called Ob-X has been shown to have both anti-angiogenic and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-inhibiting activities, we hypothesized that growth of adipose tissue can be regulated by Ob-X. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of Ob-X on angiogenesis and extracellular matrix remodeling were measured using in vitro and ex vivo assays. The effects of Ob-X on adipose tissue growth were investigated in nutritionally obese mice. RESULTS: Ob-X inhibited angiogenesis in a dose-dependent manner in the human umbilical vein endothelial cell tube formation assay in vitro and the rat aortic ring assay ex vivo. Ob-X also suppressed MMP activity in vitro. Administration of Ob-X to high fat diet-induced obese mice produced significant reductions in body weight gain and adipose tissue mass compared with control. The mass of both visceral (VSC) and subcutaneous (SC) fat was reduced in Ob-X-treated mice. The size of adipocytes in VSC and SC adipose tissues was also significantly reduced in Ob-X-treated mice. Ob-X treatment decreased the blood vessel density and MMP activity in VSC adipose tissues of nutritionally obese mice. Ob-X reduced mRNA levels of angiogenic factors (VEGF-A and FGF-2) and MMPs (MMP-2 and MMP-9), whereas it increased mRNA levels of angiogenic inhibitors (TSP-1, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in SC and VSC adipose tissues of nutritionally obese mice. CONCLUSION: Ob-X, which has anti-angiogenic and MMP-inhibitory activities, reduces adipose tissue mass in nutritionally induced obese mice, providing evidence that adipose tissue growth and development may be prevented by inhibiting angiogenesis. In addition, these data suggest that regulation of adipose tissue growth by inhibiting angiogenesis may alter the expression of genes involved in angiogenesis and the MMP system.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We examined the effects of remifentanil on cardiovascular and bispectral index (BIS) responses to tracheal intubation and neonatal outcomes in pre-eclamptic patients undergoing Caesarean delivery under general anaesthesia. METHODS: Forty-two women with severe pre-eclampsia were randomly assigned to receive either remifentanil 1 microg kg(-1) (n=21) or saline (n=21) over 30 s before induction of anaesthesia using thiopentone 4 mg kg(-1) and suxamethonium 1.5 mg kg(-1). Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and BIS values as well as plasma catecholamine concentrations were measured. Neonatal effects were assessed using Apgar scores and umbilical cord blood gas analysis. RESULTS: Induction with thiopentone caused a reduction in MAP and BIS in both remifentanil and control groups. Following the tracheal intubation MAP and HR increased in both groups, the magnitude of which was lower in the remifentanil group. BIS values also increased, of which magnitude did not differ between the groups. Norepinephrine concentrations increased significantly following the intubation in the control, while remained unaltered in the remifentanil group. The neonatal Apgar scores at 1 min were significantly lower in the remifentanil group than in the control. However, Apgar scores at 5 min, and umbilical artery and vein blood gas values were similar between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that a single bolus of 1 microg kg(-1) remifentanil effectively attenuates haemodynamic but not BIS responses to tracheal intubation in pre-eclamptic patients undergoing Caesarean delivery under general anaesthesia. However, its use was associated with maternal hypotension and neonatal respiratory depression requiring resuscitation.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to examine the changes in physico-chemical properties that occur after adjusting postmortem chilling temperatures in Hanwoo beef. The right sides of beef carcasses were chilled for 4h at 2°C, 4h at 12°C and 16h at 2°C. The left sides were used as controls, chilled for 24h at 2°C. It took 8h for the control carcasses to cool down to <10°C and 10h 20min for the treatment. Adjusting the chilling temperature could be effective in lowering the postmortem pH and glycogen content. Treatment muscles at least 8h postmortem had longer sarcomeres than the control (P<0.05). The shear force in treatment carcasses at day 1 was similar to that of the control at day 6. Alternate chilling temperature had no detrimental effect on drip, cooking, total loss or color. Total numbers of aerobic plate counts were not significantly different between the control and treatment.

RESUMEN

The current study was conducted to characterize objective meat quality, fiber type and their relations to postmortem proteolysis in longissimus muscle of Landrace and Korean native black (KNP) pigs. Longissimus muscles from each 10 market-weighted male pigs were removed after conventional slaughtering and chilling procedures, and aged for 1 or 7 days at 4°C to determine WB-shear force, objective meat color, proportion of myosin heavy chain I (MyHC I), intramuscular fat content and rate of proteolysis by a proteomics approach. KNP had a significantly (p<0.05) higher content of MyHC I, and that concurred with greatly (p<0.05) higher intramuscular fat content and Hunter a(∗) value, and significantly (p<0.05) lower drip loss than those seen in Landrace. One-dimension SDS-PAGE indicated that GAPDH, troponin I and creatine kinase were prominent proteolytic products during chiller ageing. By applying a gel-based proteome analysis, 26 proteins were identified, which showed different degradation properties during ageing between the breeds. Biopsied sample revealed that myosin regulatory light chain 2, myosin light chain isotype v/sb, fatty acid-binding protein and albumin were expressed at a greatly higher level for KNP, but their relation to fiber type (or genetic background) is unclear. It was particular noticeable that different actin isoforms showed various degradation behavior during ageing time.

RESUMEN

Phospholipase C-beta1 (PLC-beta1), one of the PLC-beta isozymes, exists as two immunologically distinguishable polypeptides of 150 (PLC-beta1a) and 140 kDa (PLC-beta1b) which are encoded in two distinct transcripts and generated by alternative splicing of a single gene. In this study, the subcellular localization of the two phospholipases C-beta1 proteins was examined in rat C6Bu-1 glioma cells using immunological techniques. Immunoblot analysis revealed that the two forms of PLC-beta1 were detectable in both cytosolic and nuclear fractions. PLC-beta1a appeared to be located preferentially in the cytosol, whereas PLC-beta1b was found predominantly in the nuclei of C6Bu-1 cells. Immunocytochemical experiments confirmed the differential localization of the two PLC-beta1 species in C6Bu-1 cells. These results suggest that the two PLC-beta1 proteins may have different physiological roles in the cell.

RESUMEN

This study was conducted to assess postmortem proteolysis using a proteomics approach, and to determine the relationship of proteolysis to WB-shear force, drip loss, and hunter L(∗) value during chiller ageing in pig longissimus muscle. To generate various meat qualities, 20 male landraces were assigned into 2×2 factorial (10 pigs fasted for 18 h and 10 pigs fed until the morning of slaughter×20 sides placed at -3 °C and 20 sides at 6 °C). An interaction between muscle temperature at pH 6.2 (TpH6.2) and ageing for both WB-shear force and drip loss showed that a high TpH6.2 produced meat with a lower shear force, but the advantage was gradually eroded by extended ageing (i.e., 1, 3 and 7 d). On the other hand, the detrimental effect of a high TpH6.2 on drip loss became more apparent as ageing time increased (i.e., 3 and 7 d). Changes in the objective quality traits and semi-quantitative spot density for 27 out of 133 identified proteins coincided during ageing. The proteins included myosin light chain 1, desmin, troponin T, cofilin 2, F-actin capping protein ß subunit, ATP synthase, carbonate dehydratase, triosephosphate isomerase, actin and its relevant peptides, peroxiredoxin 2, α-b crystalline and heat shock protein 27 kDa.

RESUMEN

This study developed a new equation to predict the carcass yield of Hanwoo cattle, as well as re-evaluating a previous prediction equation. Experimental animals comprised 79 cows, 79 steers, and 79 bulls. A stepwise model selection was performed to determine the most practical carcass traits for predicting the yield. Cold carcass weight (CW), backfat thickness (BFT), and ribeye area (REA) accounted for 52% variation in yield, and these were determined as the final parameters. When the kidney, pelvic, and heart fat were included in the model, this increased the percentage variation explained (R(2)) by 4%. To compare the newly developed equation (Yield=64.65-0.0198×CW-5.2264×BFT+0.1339×REA) and the previously used one, carcass yields of 377,048 industrial animals (145,695 cows, 225,926 bulls, and 5427 steers) were assessed. For the newly developed equation, the mean difference between experimental animals industrial animals differed only by 1.99-2.68% for all sex groups. In the case of the previous prediction equation, the mean difference ranged from 6.06% for bulls to 11.05% for steers. The results demonstrated that the prediction equation should use a mixture of sex and market weight groups. The results also support our decision to use the newly developed model in predicting the yield of Hanwoo.

RESUMEN

We present an analytic study of the urn model for separation of sand recently introduced by Lipowski and Droz [Phys. Rev. E 65, 031307 (2002)]. We solve analytically the master equation and the first-passage problem. The analytic results confirm the numerical results obtained by Lipowski and Droz. We find that the stationary probability distribution and the shortest one among the characteristic times are governed by the same free energy. We also analytically derive the form of the critical probability distribution on the critical line, which supports their results obtained by numerically calculating Binder cumulants (A. Lipowski and M. Droz, e-print cond-mat/0201472).

RESUMEN

We present an analytic study of the three-urn model for separation of sand, which can be regarded as a zero-range process. We solve analytically the master equation and the first-passage problem. We find that the stationary probability distribution obeys the detailed balance and is governed by the free energy. We find that the characteristic lifetime of a cluster diverges algebraically with exponent 1/3 at the limit of stability. We also give a general argument that the scaling behavior is robust with respect to different expressions of the flux.
