RESUMEN

SYNGAP1-related disorder (SYNGAP1-RD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is commonly associated with epilepsy, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and disruptive behaviors. In this study, behavior problems in 11 consecutive patients with SYNGAP1-RD are described and quantified based on a behavioral screening conducted within the context of a multi-disciplinary tertiary care specialty clinic visit. The behavioral phenotype was then compared to published samples of behavior problems in ASD and other genetic cause of epilepsy occurring in the context of neurodevelopmental disorders using results from the Aberrant Behavior Checklist-Community (ABC-C), an empirically derived outcome measure. We report common antecedent and consequent events surrounding problem behavior across individuals. Additionally, we report on the management approach of caregivers and the impact of problem behaviors on the family. Our results suggest a number of commonalities between behavioral profiles in SYNGAP1-RD with ASD and other genetic causes of developmental and epileptic encephalopathies, and also highlight severe behavior problems as a specific behavioral phenotype of SYNGAP1-RD.

RESUMEN

A wide literature of the unsuccessful treatment of writer's block has emerged since the early 1970's. Findings within this literature seem to confer generalizability of this procedure; however, small sample sizes may limit this interpretation. This meta-analysis independently analyzed effect sizes for "self-treatments" and "group-treatments" using number of words in the body of the publication as indication of a failure to treat writer's block. Results of the reported findings suggest that group-treatments tend to be slightly more unsuccessful than self-treatments.

RESUMEN

Parents of three children with neurodevelopmental disorders and pica were taught to use a safety checklist to create pica-safe areas when transitioning to new locations. During baseline, no parent displayed pica-safe behavior, and their children attempted pica at moderate to high rates. After use of the checklist, parent pica-safe behavior increased, and instances of pica diminished to near zero. Results transferred to new contexts and additional substances associated with pica. Using the safety checklist appears to have aided parents in creating pica-safe environments to minimize pica. RESUMEN

Elopement is one of the most common forms of problem behavior for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is associated with the greatest probability of a lethal outcome. This study evaluated the effects of a function-based treatment package on elopement for two teenage boys with ASD who eloped frequently from caregivers. Functional analyses (FA) identified the variables that evoked and maintained each teen's elopement. Treatment involved a chained schedule comprised primarily of empirically derived differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO), functional communication training (FCT), and extinction procedures. The treatment produced clinically significant decreases in elopement for both teens. Decreases in elopement maintained when the treatment evaluation was extended to additional contexts. The current study extends the literature on assessment and treatment of elopement and chained schedule treatments that involve both DRO and FCT.

RESUMEN

This two-experiment study assessed the utility of measuring happiness behavior (e.g., smiling and/or laughing) within functional analyses (FA) of challenging behavior, and using results to inform interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In Exp. 1, we concurrently measured happiness behavior within the trial-based FA's of challenging behavior of four children with ASD. Results showed differentiation for both challenging behavior in test trials and happiness behavior within controls. In Exp. 2, we compared interventions based on challenging and happiness behavior from FA results for three of the participants, using a multiple-baseline across-participants design, with embedded reversals. Results suggested that interventions derived from measures of the children's happiness behavior led to reductions challenging behavior that were similar to interventions informed by challenging behavior, and were also associated with increased happiness behavior. Taken together, these two experiments suggest that the measurement of children's happiness behavior in FA of challenging behavior appears to be helpful in determining interventions for children with ASD.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the effects of an acceptability questionnaire on classroom aides' treatment integrity during implementation of behavioral intervention plans, using a multiple-probe-baseline across-participants design. Four classroom aides in a special education preschool classroom rarely used procedures recommended to manage the challenging behavior of a four-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during baseline. After using the questionnaire results to create a functionally equivalent behavior intervention plan that was comprised of components the aides rated as more acceptable, three of the four aides greatly improved their use of the procedures and an ancillary reduction in the child's challenging behavior was observed. Overall, results suggest that including staff acceptance measures during the intervention selection process may bolster subsequent intervention integrity.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of behavioral skills training (BST) on the skateboarding skills of an 11-year-old male with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). BST was used in a multiple-probe across skills design to teach five target skateboarding skills. Imitation of an additional skill was also assessed outside of BST sessions. The overall percentage of correct skateboarding skills improved following BST. Performance gains were stable in probes across settings, and additional imitations increased across the study.

RESUMEN

A procedure consisting of peer observation and evaluation termed behavioral observations was used to improve educational staff's correct use of discrete trial teaching procedures (DTT). All participants had been previously trained and proficient in using DTT procedures; however, during baseline, showed a low level of correct demonstration of DTT procedures (mean scores: 38.3%, 43.3%, and 35.0%). Participants were then taught use a checklist to observe and score a peer's performance during DTT sessions in a classroom setting. After conducting behavioral observations, staff increased their correct usage of DTT procedures to 85.1%, 88.3%, and 81.1% respectively. These data indicate that conducting behavioral observations can lead to large and rapid improvements in educational staff's correct use of DTT procedures with a large effect size (d=4.19).
