RESUMEN

Characterization of crop-growing environments in relation to crop's genotypic performance is crucial to harness positive genotype-by-environment interactions (GEI) in systematic breeding programs. Given that, the study aimed to delineate the impact of diverse environments on crop phenology and yield traits of dwarf-statured field pea, pinpointing location(s) favoring higher yield and distinctiveness within breeding lines. We tested twelve field pea breeding lines across twenty locations in India, covering Central Zone (CZ), North Western Plain Zone (NWPZ), North Eastern Plain Zone (NEPZ), and Northern Hill Zone (NHZ). Across these locations, maximum and minimum temperatures during flowering (TMAXF, TMINF) and reproductive period (TMAXRP, TMINRP) ranged 18.9-28.3, 3.3-18.0, 15.0-30.8, and 7.9-22.1oC, respectively. Meanwhile, notable variations in phenological and agronomic traits (coefficient of variation) were observed: flowering (31%), days to maturity (21%), reproductive period (18%), grain yield (48%), and 100-seed weight (18%). Combined ANOVA demonstrated an oversized impact of environment (81%) on yield, while genotype and GEI effects were 2% and 14%, respectively. The variables TMINF, TMINRP, and cumulative growing degree-day showed positive correlations with yield, while extended vegetative and maturity durations negatively influenced yield (p < 0.05). Additionally, linear mixed-models and PCA results explained that instability in crop phenology had significant influence on field pea yield. Seed weight was markedly varied within the locations (9.9-20.8 g) and both higher and lower seed weights were associated with lower yields (Optimal = 17.1 g). HA-GGE biplot-based on environment focus-scaling demonstrated three mega-environments and specific locations viz. Kota (CZ), SK Nagar (CZ), Raipur (CZ), Sehore (CZ), and Pantnagar (NWPZ) as the ideal testing-environments with high efficiency in selecting new genotypes with wider adaptability. The study findings highlight distinct impact of environments on crop phenology and agronomic traits of field pea (dwarf-type), hold substantial value in designing efficient field pea (dwarf-type) breeding program at mega-environment scale.

RESUMEN

Calamagrostisnagarum, previously considered to be a poorly known species, has been reassessed taxonomically. It is a member of C.lahulensis-C.scabrescens complex and may be segregated by morphological characters such as the presence of pilose hairs on adaxial surface of leaf blades, spreading panicle branches, filiform awn and nerve prolongation of lemma. Besides, the micromorphology of adaxial surface of leaf blades, dorsal surface of glume and lemma differentiates Calamagrostisnagarum from its allies, C.lahulensis and C.scabrescens. It is known from Nagaland and Uttarakhand, India, and Bhutan. In this study, we have provided an emended description of the species, a discussion of its habitat and distribution, and taxonomic notes along with field photographs and photo plates for its correct identification. In addition, we also lectotypify the names C.lahulensis and C.scabrescens.

INTRODUCTION: The indoor hospital use of antibiotic irrationally has been a growing concern in the recent past. For the patients and providers of health care services this kind of drug consumption account for a major chunk of the budget. AIM: To assess the outcome of restriction on the use of parenteral antibiotics with respect to their utilization and monetary benefits, in a tertiary care hospital in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data details were collected regarding drug utilization two months before and after restriction respectively. A total 1605 patient records assessed. Drug utilization was expressed as DDD/100 patient bed days. Use of Carbapenems were restricted to culture positive cases only. Antibiotics started for patients as per clinical judgment were issued for only five days. Culture sensitivity reports verified physically on a special indent form, before every antibiotic issued thereafter. RESULTS: Piperacillin-tazobactum (DDD/100 BD 1.72 before and 1.29 after restrictions) was the commonly used antibiotic. Considering values expressed in DDD/100 BD before and after restriction respectively, substantial decrease in consumption of antibiotics like Imipenem- Cilastin (0.22 to 0.16), meropenem (0.30 to 0.09), piperacillin-tazobactum (1.72 to 1.29), teicoplanin (0.24 to 0.05) and vancomycin (0.69 to 0.40) was observed. An increase in consumption of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (0.90 to 1.04) and clarithromycin (0.44 to 0.55) noted, pointing to a shift in antibiotic use. Restriction decreased expenditure burden on these antibiotics by INR 1,45,911 (17.31%). CONCLUSION: Restriction of antibiotics cuts down consumption and benefits hospital budget immensely.

INTRODUCTION: Cellular mobile phones are a major cause of distraction especially while driving. The aggressive and inappropriate use of cellular mobile phones has increased the risk of accidents. Similar alerts are available in literature for certain substances and drugs (e.g. second generation anti H1 drug -Cetirizine) which also derange psychomotor performance and parameters of alertness. AIM: This study measured variations in hand-eye coordination and visual acuity due to use of cellular mobile phone in comparison to that of commonly used antihistaminic drug viz., single dose Cetirizine 10 mg. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a single blind, single dose, interventional study, 100 healthy human volunteers divided into two groups. Baseline readings of all volunteers were noted. Group-I (n=50) was Cetirizine group (10mg orally stat), Group -II (n=50) Cellular mobile phone user group. Alertness was tested on hand- steadiness tester (Reaction Time Index = RTI) and on Flicker-fusion apparatus (visual acuity - Critical Flicker Fusion Frequency per second= CFFF/sec). Baseline readings of all volunteers were noted before intervention. Baseline was compared with readings at three hour post-intervention and was analysed by paired t-test. Inter-group comparison of parameters was also done and was analysed by unpaired t-test. RESULTS: The baseline RTI (95.46±41.74, 85.11±39.05) and CFF low and high (40.07±9.970, 40.76±9.309 and 40.42±9.035, 40.48±9.863) respectively, in Cetirizine group and Mobile user group were comparable. The RTI increased significantly (116.4±51.46, 102.8±49.26) in both the groups after intervention. However, there is no significant change in CFF intensity from baseline in either group post-intervention. CONCLUSION: Concurrent use of mobile phone while performing tasks, showed significant impairment of hand-steadiness which was comparable to that produced by single dose Cetirizine 10 mg and this may be one of the factors contributing to their close association with road traffic accidents.

India currently has the largest number of indoor air pollution-related health problems in the world, with three-quarters of its households burning wood, cowdung, or crop residues ("traditional" biomass fuels) for cooking, and the remainder using kerosene and relatively clean-burning liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Combustion of these fuels produces various pollutants that may cause serious health effects in exposed populations. In this study, the micronucleus (MN) and chromosomal aberration (CA) assays were used to evaluate the relative amounts of DNA damage produced by the use of these cooking fuels. Cytogenetic evaluation of 179 female subjects showed a significant increase in both MN and CA frequency in blood lymphocytes from users of biomass-fuels in comparison to lymphocytes from LPG users (used as a reference population). The relative MN and CA frequencies for the users of the various fuels decreased in the order cowdung > cowdung/wood >/= wood > kerosene >/= LPG. Further, the results indicated an effect of subject age, and the duration of exposure on the MN and CA frequencies in biomass fuel users. Age had no significant effects on the genotoxicity responses in subjects with 10 years, CA and MN frequencies were higher in older individuals (>30 years of age) than younger subjects. Regardless of age, subjects burning biomass fuels had higher MN and CA frequencies than LPG users only when exposures were of at least 5 years duration. These results indicate that burning biomass-based fuels increases the frequency of cytogenetic alterations in blood lymphocytes of exposed populations, possibly because of exposure to the various noxious gases and toxic substances present in biomass fuels. These cytogenetic markers could be used in the field to assess the genotoxic consequences of burning various cooking fuels and for early detection of genetic abnormalities in people exposed to various pollutants and toxicants.
