RESUMEN

Two-dimensional transition metal nitrides offer intriguing possibilities for achieving novel electronic and mechanical functionality owing to their distinctive and tunable bonding characteristics compared to other 2D materials. We demonstrate here the enabling effects of strong bonding on the morphology and functionality of 2D tungsten nitrides. The employed bottom-up synthesis experienced a unique substrate stabilization effect beyond van-der-Waals epitaxy that favored W5N6 over lower metal nitrides. Comprehensive structural and electronic characterization reveals that monolayer W5N6 can be synthesized at large scale and shows semimetallic behavior with an intriguing indirect band structure. Moreover, the material exhibits exceptional resilience against mechanical damage and chemical reactions. Leveraging these electronic properties and robustness, we demonstrate the application of W5N6 as atomic-scale dry etch stops that allow the integration of high-performance 2D materials contacts. These findings highlight the potential of 2D transition metal nitrides for realizing advanced electronic devices and functional interfaces.

RESUMEN

Carbon-based inorganic CsPbIBr2 perovskite solar cells (C-IPSC) have attracted widespread attention due to their low cost and excellent thermal stability. Unfortunately, due to the soft ion crystal nature of perovskite, inherent bulk defects and energy level mismatch at the CsPbIBr2/carbon interface limit the performance of the device. In this study, we introduced aromatic benzyltrimethylammonium chloride (BTACl) as a passivation layer to passivate the surface and grain boundaries of the CsPbIBr2 film. Due to the reduction of perovskite defects and better energy level arrangement, carrier recombination is effectively suppressed and hole extraction is improved. The champion device achieves a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.30% with reduces hysteresis and open circuit voltage loss. In addition, unencapsulated equipment exhibits excellent stability in ambient air.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aims to compare the clinical efficacy of mesh non-fixation and fixation in laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair, systematically evaluating the application value of the mesh non-fixation technique in clinical settings. METHODS: A computerized search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing mesh non-fixation and fixation in TAPP inguinal hernia repair. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software, and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) evidence grading system was employed for outcome quality assessment. Publication bias analysis was performed using Begg's test. A trial sequential analysis (TSA) was performed using TSA 0.9.5.10 Beta software. RESULTS: A total of nine RCTs involving 1,879 inguinal hernia patients were included. Meta-analysis results demonstrated that, compared to the fixation group, the non-fixation group exhibited significantly lower seroma occurrence rate [RR = 0.43, 95% CI (0.20, 0.89), P = 0.02, heterogeneity P = 0.28, I²=22%], Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain score at 6 months postoperatively [MD=-0.21, 95% CI (-0.29, -0.12), P < 0.00001, heterogeneity P = 0.34, I²=0%], and cost [MD=-3.23 thousand yuan, 95% CI (-4.26, -2.19), P < 0.00001, heterogeneity P = 0.0003, I²=92%]. There were no statistically significant differences in overall complication rate [RR = 0.88, 95% CI (0.62, 1.23), P = 0.45, heterogeneity P = 0.11, I²=44%], overall infection event rate [RR = 0.96, 95% CI (0.36, 2.56), P = 0.93, heterogeneity P = 0.62, I²=0%] and recurrence rate [RR = 0.75, 95% CI (0.28, 1.99), P = 0.56, heterogeneity P = 0.44, I²=0%] between the two groups. The results of the TSA indicated that the observed lower seroma occurrence rate in the non-fixation group compared to the fixation group requires further validation through the inclusion of additional RCTs. CONCLUSION: Mesh non-fixation in TAPP inguinal hernia repair is deemed safe and does not elevate the risk of hernia recurrence. However, given certain limitations in this study, future comprehensive and reliable validation will require further multicenter, high-quality, large-sample double-blind RCTs.

RESUMEN

This study aims to investigate the effect of Xixin Decoction on the T helper 17 cell(Th17)/regulatory T cell(Treg) ba-lance of intestinal mucosa and the expression of related transcription factors in the senescence-accelerated mouse-prone 8(SAMP8) model. Fifty 14-week male mice of SAMP8 were randomized by the random number table method into model group, probiotics group, and high-, medium-, and low-dose Xixin Decoction groups, with 10 mice in each group. Ten 14-week male mice of senescence-acce-lerated mouse-resistant 1(SAMR1) served as control group. After 10 weeks of feeding, the mice were administrated with correspon-ding drugs for 10 weeks. Morris water maze test was carried out to examine the learning and memory abilities of mice. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was employed to determine the content of secretory immunoglobulin A(SIgA) in the intestinal mucosa, and flow cytometry to detect the percentage content of Th17 and Treg in the intestinal mucosa. Western blot was performed to determine the protein levels of retinoid-related orphan receptor gamma t(RORγt) and forkhead box p3(Foxp3) in the mouse colon tissue. Compared with control group, the escape latency of mice in model group was significantly prolonged(P<0.01), and the number of times of crossing the platform and the residence time in the target quadrant were significantly reduced within 60 s(P<0.01), intestinal mucosal SIgA content was significantly decreased(P<0.01), Th17 content was increased(P<0.05), Treg content was decreased(P<0.01), the expression of RORγt protein was increased and Foxp3 protein was decreased in colon(P<0.01). Compared with the model group, high-dose Xixin Decoction group improved the learning and memory ability(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Probiotics group and high-and medium-dose Xixin Decoction group increased the content of SIgA in intestinal mucosa(P<0.05 or P<0.01), decreased percentage content of Th17 and increased the percentage content of Treg in intestinal mucosa(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Furthermore, they down-regulated the protein level of RORγt and up-regulated the protein level of Foxp3 in the intestinal mucosa(P<0.01). In conclusion, Xixin Decoction may act on intestinal mucosal immune barrier, affect gut-brain information exchange, and improve the learning and memory ability of SAMP8 by promoting SIgA secretion and regulating the Th17/Treg balance and the expression of RORγt and Foxp3.

RESUMEN

We report a highly crystalline self-assembled multilayer (SAMUL) that is fundamentally different from the conventional monolayer or disordered bilayer used for hole-extraction in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The SAMUL can be easily formed on ITO substrate to establish better surface coverage to enhance the performance and stability of PSCs. A detailed structure-property-performance relationship of molecules used for SAMUL is established through a systematic study of their crystallinity, molecular packing, and hole-transporting properties. These SAMULs are rationally optimized by varying their molecular structures and deposition methods through thermal evaporation or spin-coating for fabricating PSCs. The CbzNaphPPA-based SAMUL was chosen for fabricating inverted PSCs due to it exhibiting the highest crystallinity and hole mobility which is derived from the ordered H-aggregation. This resulted in a remarkably high fill factor of 86.45 %, which enables a very impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 26.07 % to be achieved along with excellent device stability (94 % of its initial PCE retained after continuous operation for 1200 h under 1-sun irradiation at maximum power point at 65 °C). Additionally, a record-high PCE of 23.50 % could be achieved by adopting a thermally evaporated SAMUL. This greatly simplifies and broadens the scope for SAM to be used for large-area devices on diverse substrates.

RESUMEN

Temporally heterogeneous environments is hypothesized to correlate with greater plasticity of plants, which has rarely been supported by direct evidence. To address this issue, we subjected three species from different ranges of habitats to a first round of alternating full light and heavy shading (temporally heterogeneous light experience), constant moderate shading and full light conditions (temporally homogeneous light experiences, control) and a second round of light-gradient treatments. We measured plant performance in a series of morphological, biomass, physiological and biochemical traits at the end of each round. Compared to constant full light experience, temporally heterogeneous light conditions induced immediate active biochemical responses (in the first round) with improved late growth in biomass (during the second round); constant moderate shading experience increased photosynthetic physiological and biomass performances of plants in early response, and decreased their late growth in biomass. The karst endemic species of Kmeria septentrionalis showed greater improvement in late growth of biomass and lower decrease in biochemical performance, due to early heterogeneous experience, compared to the non-karst species of Lithocarpus glaber and the karst adaptable species of Celtis sinensis. Results suggested plants will prefer to produce morphological and physiological responses that are less reversible and more costly in the face of more reliable environmental cues at early stage in spite of decreased future growth potential, but to produce immediate biochemical responses for higher late growth potential when early environmental cues are less reliable, to avoid the loss of high costs and low profits. Typical karst species should be more able to benefit from early temporally heterogeneous experience, due to long-term adaptation to karst habitats of high environmental heterogeneity and low resource availability.

RESUMEN

Owing to the advantages of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) in the versatility of organic synthesis, multiparameter measurement, and signal amplification, sensors based on OFETs have received increasing attention for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, false device operation and gas-sensing measurements often occur to vitiate the advantages of OFETs and even output error gas-sensing signals. In this work, by experimentally and theoretically studying the effects of VOC adsorption on the operational characteristics of the OFET, the proper operations of OFETs in gas-sensing measurements were clarified. The multiparameter measurements of OFETs showed that the source-drain current was the optimized parameter for achieving high responsivity, and other OFET parameters could be used for fingerprint analysis. By operating OFETs in the near-threshold region, the amplification effect was switched to enhance the responsivity by orders of magnitude to VOCs, while in the overthreshold region, the OFETs had a low signal-to-noise ratio. Besides, a counteraction effect and an uncertainty effect were discovered, leading to error gas-sensing signals. A theoretical study was carried out to reveal the dependency of the gas-sensing properties of OFETs on VOC adsorption. A series of rules were proposed for guiding the measurements of OFET sensors by taking full advantage of transistors in gas-sensing applications.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the actual clinical application of poly (adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) maintenance therapy in Chinese patients with recurrent ovarian cancer, and to explore prognostic factors associated with progression-free survival (PFS). METHODS: We retrospectively assessed real-world clinical data from our hospital using the inclusion and exclusion criteria of representative randomized controlled trials, analyzed the prognosis, and performed univariate and multivariate analyses of prognostic factors. RESULTS: Between 2019 and 2022, the proportion of platinum-sensitive recurrence ovarian cancer patients who received PARPi maintenance therapy increased to 29.6%, 53.3%, 43.8% and 62.2%, respectively, each year. A total of 48 patients were included in the prognostic analysis, of which 32 and 16 received olaparib and niraparib, respectively. Using the criteria of the Study19 and SOLO2 studies, the olaparib group in our patients had coincidence rates of 56.3% and 18.8%, respectively. Using the criteria of the NOVA and NORA studies, the niraparib group had coincidence rates of 31.3% and 37.5%, respectively. Median PFS was 26.1 months (95% CI 20.2-32.1). Response to primary therapy was an independent prognostic factor for PFS (relative risk, 3.248; 95% CI 1.081-9.757, P = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS: PARPi maintenance therapy was also effective in real world applications. Complete response (CR) to primary therapy was an independent factor favorably affecting PFS. Therefore, primary treatment choices aimed at optimal cytoreduction during primary surgery and improving the CR rate should still be considered, which positively affects the long-term prognosis of patients in the new treatment mode.

RESUMEN

As a leading cause of death, second only to heart disease, cancer has always been one of the burning topics in medical research. When targeting multiple signal pathways in tumorigenesis chemoprevention, using natural or synthetic anti-cancer drugs is a vital strategy to reduce cancer damage. However, toxic effects, multidrug resistance (MDR) as well as cancer stem cells (CSCs) all prominently limited the clinical application of conventional anticancer drugs. With low side effects, strong biological activity, unique mechanism, and wide range of targets, natural products derived from plants are considered significant sources for new drug development. Nobiletin is one of the most attractive compounds, a unique flavonoid primarily isolated from the peel of citrus fruits. Numerous studies in vitro and in vivo have suggested that nobiletin and its derivatives possess the eminent potential to become effective cancer chemoprevention agents through various cellular and molecular levels. This article aims to comprehensively review the anticancer efficacy and specific mechanisms of nobiletin, enhancing our understanding of its chemoprevention properties and providing the latest research findings. At the end of this review, we also give some discussion and future perspectives regarding the challenges and opportunities in nobiletin efficient exploitation.

RESUMEN

The physical and psychological benefits of physical activity are well established. However, there is no consensus regarding the effects of physical activity on children's academic performance in general and in specific subjects. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to identify forms of physical activity that are suitable for improving the physical activity levels and academic performance of children aged 12 years and under. The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Included studies had to meet the following criteria: randomized controlled trials examining the effect of physical activity interventions on children's academic performance. Stata 15.1 software was used to conduct the meta-analysis. A total of 16 studies were included, and the results showed that the "physical activity + academic curriculum" format had a positive effect on children's academic performance. Physical activity had a stronger effect on math performance than on reading and spelling performance (SMD = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.30,1.19, P < 0.001).   Conclusion: The impact of physical activity on children's academic performance varies based on the type of physical activity intervention, with "physical activity + academic curriculum" format having a better effect on academic performance. The effect of physical activity interventions on children's academic performance also varies by subject; the effect is strongest for math.    Trial registration: Registration and protocol CRD42022363255. What is Known: • The physical and psychological benefits of physical activity are well established. • Previous meta-analyses have failed to demonstrate the impact of physical activity on the general and subject-specific academic performance of children aged 12 and under. What is New: • The PAAL form of physical activity has a better effect on the academic performance of children aged 12 and under. • The benefit of physical activity also varies by subject, with the greatest effect being observed for math.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND Plantar pressure analysis is widely used in the study of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The present study aimed to investigate the static and dynamic plantar pressure distribution in patients with different stages of unilateral KOA using the Footscan® platform system. MATERIAL AND METHODS We recruited 94 patients aged 61.75±7.23 years old with different stages of unilateral KOA for static and dynamic analysis using the Footscan® platform system. The static pressure (%) of the left, right, anterior, posterior, and the pelvic rotation (°) was assessed. The peak pressure (PP, kPa) was investigated in 10 areas of the foot: medial heel (MH), lateral heel (LH), midfoot (MF), first to fifth metatarsals (M1-M5), hallux (T1), and toes 2-5 (T2-5). The correlation between KOA stages and plantar pressure distributions was investigated. RESULTS The results revealed that static pressure on the unaffected side and pelvic rotation were positively correlated with KOA stages. In addition, there was a positive correlation between KOA stages and PP of M5, MF, and LH zones on the affected side and PP of M2, M3, and M4 zones on the unaffected side, and a negative correlation between KOA stages and PP of T1 and T2-5 zones on the affected side. CONCLUSIONS With the progression of KOA, static plantar pressure tends to distributed on the unaffected side, and the dynamic plantar pressure tends to be distributed laterally on both feet. The plantar pressure distributions in unilateral KOA patients are abnormal and are closely related to the severity of KOA.

RESUMEN

Treatment of blood blister-like aneurysms (BBAs) of the supraclinoid internal carotid artery (ICA) with flow diverters (FDs) has become widespread in recent years. However, ruptured blood blister-like aneurysm (BBA) of ICA treatment with flow diverter-assisted coil embolization (FDAC) remains controversial. Moreover, limited direct comparative studies have been conducted between the two treatment modalities, FDs and FDAC, for BBAs. The purpose of this study was to document our experience and evaluate the effectiveness and safety of FDAC. We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical and radiological information from ten patients who experienced ruptured BBAs of the supraclinoid ICA at our center from January 2021 to February 2023. The technical details of FDAC for ruptured BBAs were described, and the technical steps were named "pipeline embolization device (PED)-Individualized shaping(microcatheter)-Semi deploying-Rivet(coils)-Massage(microwire)" as the PEISSERM technique. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), whereas radiological results were determined through angiography. A pooled analysis was implemented, incorporating data from literature sources that reported perioperative and long-term clinical and angiographic outcomes of ruptured BBAs treated with FD and FDAC strategies, along with our data. Data in our analysis pool were categorized into FD and FDAC strategy groups to explore the preferred treatment modalities for BBAs. The PEISSERM technique was utilized to treat ten patients, seven males, and three females, with an average age of 41.7 years. A single PED was deployed in conjunction with coils in all ten patients. All PEDs were documented to have good wall apposition. The immediate postoperative angiograms demonstrated Raymond grade I in ten aneurysms. Angiographic follow-up of nine patients at 4-25 months showed total occlusion of the aneurysms. At the most recent follow-up, the mRS scores of nine patients hinted at a good prognosis. Pooled analysis of 233 ICA-BBA cases of FD revealed a technical success rate of 91% [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.88 to 0.95], a rate of complete occlusion of 79% (95% CI, 0.73 to 0.84), a recurrence rate of 2% (95% CI, 0.00 to 0.04), a rebleed rate of 2% (95% CI, 0.00 to 0.04), and the perioperative stroke rate was 8% (95% CI, 0.04 to 0.11). The perioperative mortality was 4% (95% CI, 0.01 to 0.07). The long-term good clinical outcome rate was 85% (95% CI, 0.80 to 0.90). The mortality rate was 6% (95% CI, 0.03 to 0.09). Results from the subgroup analysis illustrated that the FDAC strategy for BBAs had a significantly higher immediate postoperative complete occlusion rate (P < 0.001), total occlusion rate (P = 0.016), and a good outcome rate (P = 0.041) compared with the FD strategy. The FDAC strategy can yield a higher rate of good outcomes than the FD strategy. The PEISSERM technique employed by the FDAC is a reliable and effective treatment approach as it can minimize the hemodynamic burden of BBA's fragile dome, thereby achieving an excellent occlusion rate. The PEISSERM technique in the FDAC strategy contributes to understanding the BBA's treatment and offers a potentially optimal treatment for BBA.

RESUMEN

The immune checkpoint inhibitor/tyrosine kinase inhibitor (ICI/TKI) combination treatment is currently the first-line treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). However, its efficacy beyond the third-line setting is expected to be relatively poor, and high-grade toxicities can develop by prior exposure to multiple drugs, resulting in a relatively poor performance in patients. Determining the best treatment regimen and sequence remains difficult and requires further investigation in patients with mRCC. In this study, two cases of mRCC, who failed several lines of TKI and nivolumab but exhibited a good anticancer effect after rechallenging with axitinib, are described. Both patients had a faster time to best response and better progression-free survival (PFS) than during previous treatments. Moreover, the axitinib dose could be reduced to 2.5 mg daily when used in combination with nivolumab while continuing to exert an impressive anticancer effect. To determine the cytotoxic effect, we performed a lymphocyte activation test and found that the level of granzyme B released by cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells was higher when axitinib was combined with nivolumab. To evaluate this result, a bioinformatics approach was used to analyze the PRISM database. In conclusion, based on the results of a lymphocyte activation test and PD-1 expression, our findings indicate that sequential therapy with axitinib rechallenge after nivolumab resistance is reasonable for the treatment of mRCC.

RESUMEN

Whether to use antibiotics to prevent surgical site infection in elective inguinal tension-free hernia repair has been controversial. To systematically evaluate the effect of prophylactic antibiotic application in elective inguinal tension-free hernia repair, we identified all published randomised controlled trials of the effect of prophylactic antibiotic application on elective inguinal tension-free hernia repair were collected by computer retrieval from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure; VIP Database; Wanfang Database; China Biomedical Literature Database; and PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.3 software. The meta-analysis showed that the total incidence of surgical site infections [P = 0.003] and the incidence of superficial surgical site infections [P = 0.004] in the antibiotic group (AG) were lower than those in the non-antibiotic group (NAG). There was no significant difference in the total incidence of postoperative infections [P = 0.06], deep surgical site infections [P = 0.26] and seroma [P = 0.52] between the AG and the NAG. Based on current evidence, the application of prophylactic antibiotics in elective inguinal tension-free hernia repair can prevent the total incidence of surgical site infections and that of superficial surgical site infections but cannot prevent the total incidence of postoperative infection events, incidence of deep surgical site infections and incidence of seroma.

RESUMEN

In mammals, body-size responses to warming climates are diverse, and the mechanisms underlying these different responses have been little investigated. Using temporal and spatial datasets of three rodent species distributed across different climatic zones in China, we investigated temporal and spatial trends of body size (length and mass), identified the critical drivers of these trends, and inferred the potential causes underlying the distinct body-size responses to the critical drivers. We found that body mass of all species remained stable over time and across space. Body length, however, increased in one species over time and in two species across space. Generally, body-length variation was predicted best by minimum ambient temperature. Moreover, in two species, body length changed linearly with temperature differences between ancestral and colonization areas. These distinct temperature-length patterns may jointly be caused by species-specific temperature sensitivities and experienced magnitudes of warming. We hypothesize that species or populations distributed across distinct temperature gradients evolved different intrinsic temperature sensitivities, which affect how their body sizes respond to warming climates. Our results suggest that size trends associated with climate change should be explored at higher temporal and spatial resolutions, and include clades of species with similar distributions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of arbidol and lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using a meta-analysis method. METHODS: The China Knowledge Network, VIP database, WanFang database PubMed database, Embase database, and Cochrane Library were searched for a collection of comparative studies on arbidol and lopinavir/ritonavir in the treatment of COVID-19. Meta-analysis was used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Arbidol and lopinavir/ritonavir in the treatment of COVID-19. RESULTS: The results of the systematic review indicated that Arbidol had a higher positive-to-negative conversion rate of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleic acid on Day 7 (p = 0.03), a higher positive-to-negative conversion rate of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid on Day 14 (p = 0.006), a higher improvement rate of chest computed tomography on Day 14 (p = 0.02), a lower incidence of adverse reactions (p = 0.002) and lower rate of mortality (p = 0.007). There was no difference in the rate of cough disappearance on Day 14 (p = 0.24) or the rate of severe/critical illness (p = 0.07) between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Arbidol may be superior to lopinavir/ritonavir in the treatment of COVID-19. However, due to the small number of included studies and the number of patients, high-quality multicenter large-sample randomized double-blind controlled trials are still needed for verification.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The study aims to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy after 8 weeks (long interval, LI) between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery for locally advanced rectal cancer. METHODS: The PubMed database, EMBASE database, and the Cochrane Library (deadline: September 25, 2021) were searched to select clinical studies that compared two intervals between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery for locally advanced rectal cancer: after 8 weeks (long interval, LI) and within 8 weeks (short interval, SI). The included studies were screened and evaluated according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: Eighteen studies were included, with 9070 cases in the LI group and 14,207 cases in the SI group. The analysis results showed that the pathologic complete response (PCR) rate in the LI group was higher than that in the SI group (P < 0.00001). There was no significant difference in the R0 resection rate (P = 0.85), anal preservation rate (P = 0.89), morbidity rate (P = 0.60), anastomotic leakage rate (P = 0.06), operation time (P = 0.58), local recurrence rate (P = 0.56), distant metastasis rate (P = 0.32), or overall survival (OS) rate (P = 0.17) between the two groups. CONCLUSION: A longer interval between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery can improve the PCR rate; however, it has no significant impact on the clinical efficacy or long-term prognosis. Due to some limitations in the number and quality of the studies, these findings still need to be further verified by multicenter, large-sample high-quality RCTs in the future.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The radiation of ecdysozoans (moulting animals) during the Cambrian gave rise to panarthropods and various groups of worms including scalidophorans, which played an important role in the elaboration of early marine ecosystems. Although most scalidophorans were infaunal burrowers travelling through soft sediment at the bottom of the sea, Selkirkia lived inside a tube. RESULTS: We explore the palaeobiology of these tubicolous worms, and more generally the origin and evolutionary significance of tube-dwelling in early animals, based on exceptionally preserved fossils from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte (Stage 3, China) including a new species, Selkirkia transita sp. nov. We find that the best phylogenetic model resolves Selkirkia as a stem-group priapulid. Selkirkia secreted a protective cuticular thickening, the tube, inside which it was able to move during at least part of its life. Partly based on measured growth patterns, we construe that this tube was separated from the trunk during a moulting process that has no direct equivalent in other scalidophorans. Although the ontogeny of Selkirkia is currently unknown, we hypothesize that its conical tube might have had the same ecological function and possibly even deep development origin as the lorica, a protective cuticular thickening found in larval priapulids and adult loriciferans. Selkirkia is seen as a semi-sedentary animal capable of very shallow incursions below the water/sediment interface, possibly for feeding or during the tube-secreting phase. Brachiopod epibionts previously reported from the Xiaoshiba Lagerstätte (ca. 514 Ma) also presumably occur in Selkirkia sinica from Chengjiang (ca. 518 Ma). CONCLUSIONS: Our critical and model-based approach provides a new phylogenetic framework for Scalidophora, upon which to improve in order to study the evolution of morphological characters in this group. Tube-dwelling is likely to have offered Selkirkia better protection and anchoring to sediment and has developed simultaneously in other Cambrian animals such as hemichordates, annelids or panarthropods. Often lost in modern representatives in favour of active infaunal lifestyles, tube-dwelling can be regarded as an early evolutionary response of various metazoans to increasing environmental and biological pressure in Cambrian marine ecosystems.

RESUMEN

The safety of drinking and irrigation water is an issue of great concern worldwide. The rational development and utilization of water resources are vital for the economic and societal stability of Altay, an extremely arid area. In this study, three types of water samples (25 river waters, 10 groundwaters, 6 lake waters) were collected from main rivers and lakes in Altay and analyzed for electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, pH, major ions (i.e., K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, NO2-, F-), and trace elements (i.e., Al, Li, B, Sc, Ti, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, I, Ba, U). The water quality index (WQI), hazard quotient, carcinogenic risk, Na percentage, and Na adsorption ratio were then calculated to evaluate the water quality for drinking and irrigation. The results showed that the main hydrochemical type of river waters and groundwaters was Ca-HCO3, whereas that of lake water was mainly Na-SO4. The WQIs (9.39-170.69) indicated that the water quality in Altay ranged from poor to excellent. The concentrations of As, Ni, and U need to be carefully monitored since their average carcinogenic risks (for all waters collected, for adults) reached 0.05686, 0.06801, and 0.14527 and exceeded the safety risk levels (10-4-10-6) by at least 568 times, 680 times, and 1452 times, respectively. The result of Na% and SAR indicated that lake waters (with Na% of 62.92 and SAR of 41.63) and groundwaters (with Na% of 37.88 and SAR of 5.58) in Altay were unsuitable for irrigation, while river water (with Na% of 29.24 and SAR of 3.33) could meet the irrigation quality requirements. The results of this study could help promote reasonable water resource use among three types of waters and population protection in Altay.
