BACKGROUND: The characteristics of prostate cancer on autopsy and early-stage prostate cancer are identical. Using autopsy specimens, we analysed prostate cancer characteristics and clarified the spatial distributions of lesions. METHOD: We obtained prostate specimens from Chinese donors without a prostate cancer diagnosis and analyzed prostate cancer pathological characteristics on autopsy by whole-mount sampling. We determined the distributions of lesions in horizontal and vertical dimensions. The horizontal dimension included four horizontal quadrants (left-anterior, left-posterior, right-anterior, and right-posterior quadrants), the peripheral zone, and the transition zone. RESULT: The overall positive rate of prostate cancer among 113 specimens was 35.4%. There were 73 lesions in 40 prostates with prostate cancer. The positive rates of lesions in the left-anterior, left-posterior, right-anterior, and right-posterior quadrants were 24.7% (18/73), 27.4% (20/73), 26.0% (19/73), and 21.9% (16/73), respectively. The positive rate of prostate cancer was 74% in the areas between the apex above 0.5-0.8 cm and the middle slice. There were 22 (30.1%) and 51 (69.9%) lesions in the superior and inferior half of the prostate. There were no significant differences in the median volume and Gleason grade group between the superior and inferior half (p = .876 and p = .228). CONCLUSION: In the horizontal dimension, the positive rate of prostate cancer was consistent in the four quadrants. Prostate cancer mainly originated from the areas between the apex above 0.5-0.8 cm and the middle slice. Compared with the superior half, the inferior half of the prostate had a higher positive rate but the same lesion characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal dysplasia (LD) is a precancerous lesion of the larynx. In this study, the laryngeal tissue of patients with laryngeal dysplasia was taken as the research object, and the aetiology of reflux was analysed. METHOD: Patients with laryngeal dysplasia after surgery were selected as our subjects. The levels of pepsin, enterokinase and bilirubin in laryngeal tissue samples of the two groups were detected by immunohistochemical method. RESULTS: The OR values (95% CI) of pepsin, enterokinase and bilirubin were 0.67 (0.19-2.36), 0.80 (0.22-2.98) and 1.33 (0.30-5.96), respectively, in the univariate analysis. Besides, in the multivariate analysis, the OR values (95% CI) of pepsin, enterokinase and bilirubin were 0.57 (0.14-2.30), 0.73 (0.18-2.92) and 1.40 (0.30-6.53), respectively. CONCLUSION: Larger sample size should be applied to prospective studies on whether reflux is a risk factor for laryngeal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Insulinomas and non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (NF-PanNETs) have distinctive clinical presentations but share similar pathological features. Their genetic bases have not been comprehensively compared. Herein, we used whole-genome/whole-exome sequencing (WGS/WES) to identify genetic differences between insulinomas and NF-PanNETs. DESIGN: The mutational profiles and copy-number variation (CNV) patterns of 211 PanNETs, including 84 insulinomas and 127 NF-PanNETs, were obtained from WGS/WES data provided by Peking Union Medical College Hospital and the International Cancer Genome Consortium. Insulinoma RNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry data were assayed. RESULTS: PanNETs were categorised based on CNV patterns: amplification, copy neutral and deletion. Insulinomas had CNV amplifications and copy neutral and lacked CNV deletions. CNV-neutral insulinomas exhibited an elevated rate of YY1 mutations. In contrast, NF-PanNETs had all three CNV patterns, and NF-PanNETs with CNV deletions had a high rate of loss-of-function mutations of tumour suppressor genes. NF-PanNETs with CNV alterations (amplification and deletion) had an elevated risk of relapse, and additional DAXX/ATRX mutations could predict an increased relapse risk in the first 2-year period. CONCLUSION: These WGS/WES data allowed a comprehensive assessment of genetic differences between insulinomas and NF-PanNETs, reclassifying these tumours into novel molecular subtypes. We also proposed a novel relapse risk stratification system using CNV patterns and DAXX/ATRX mutations.

BACKGROUND: Successful clinical evaluation of human tumors relies on proper handling of tissue samples to maximally preserve the cellular and metabolic states in vivo. Pancreatic samples are particularly sensitive to sample mishandling due to the abundance of digestive enzymes. We study how the duration of ischemia, in vivo and ex vivo, both of which are unavoidable lagging periods following surgical dissection, significantly impact the utility of pancreatic samples. METHODS: We systematically characterize a wide range of tissue integrity features, including histological patterns, cellular structures, DNA/RNA quality and activity of major signaling pathways in normal pancreases and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) tumor tissues from 41 patients with different ischemia. RESULTS: We reveal that tissues experiencing longer periods of ischemia exhibit significant deterioration and could potentially mislead disease diagnosis and preclinical research. Based on these analyses, we propose an optimal procedure that balances better clinical practice and high tissue sample quality. CONCLUSIONS: Our work provides a guideline for pancreatic sample handling and could have wide implications in clinical diagnosis and translational research.

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) is one of the most fatal cancers in the world for early metastasis, extensive invasion, and poor prognosis with a 5-year survival rate less than 5%. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Therefore, it is urgent to explore molecular markers for early diagnosis or therapy target to improve the outcome of PAAD. METHODS: We retrieved transcriptome data as well as clinical information from patients with PAAD in The Cancer Genome Altas (TCGA) database. Survival time associated microRNAs (miRNAs) and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) were initially identified, followed by enrichment analysis (Gene Ontology [GO] and pathway). The relationship between survival time associated miRNAs-mRNAs was also investigated to discover putative transcriptional control mechanisms of PAAD. Finally, by consulting the literature and retrieving the database, we found that hsa-miR-495 might have played an important role in PAAD. RESULTS: In total, 146 miRNAs from 378 miRNAs and 580 mRNA from 17 100 mRNA, including 328 risk mRNA and 252 protective mRNA, were found to be associated with the survival time of PAAD. Eight hundred eighty-eight mRNA-miRNA pairs were related to the survival time of PAAD, involving in 755 mRNAs and 35 miRNAs. We chose 13 miRNAs predicted by target gene in the miRanda database for further research. Among these 13 miRNAs, hsa-miR-495 was identified as a good biomarker. Through GO and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis, the significantly enriched pathways involved in focal adhesion, Staphylococcus aureus infection, and Intestinal immune network for immunoglobulin A production. And four target genes and 87 pathways of the hsa-miR-495 were enriched in PAAD. Interestingly, we found hsa-miR-495 with a low expression having a poor overall survival and significantly different recurrence rate within 5 years. CONCLUSION: Hsa-miR-495 and its target genes may serve as a prognostic and predictive marker in PAAD. Further research on the function of the hsa-miR-495 and its target genes in the KEGG pathway may provide references for treatment of PAAD.

AIMS: The B7 family check-point molecules are potential therapeutic targets in cancer immunotherapy. However, their expression status in human gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) remains unknown. We investigated the expression profiles of the B7 family check-point proteins PD-L1, PD-L2, B7-H3, B7-H4, VISTA and B7-H6 in GTN and their clinical significance. METHODS AND RESULTS: We identified 112 patients with GTN, including 68 with choriocarcinoma, 33 with placental-site trophoblastic tumour (PSTT) and 11 with epithelioid trophoblastic tumour (ETT). Immunohistochemical staining was performed on whole-tissue GTN sections using anti-B7 family antibodies. VISTA expression was immunohistochemically analysed using microarrays of normal human tissues and of 20 common cancers. PD-L1 and B7-H3 were highly expressed in all GTN tumours, while PD-L2 was expressed in 87.5% of the samples. B7-H4 and B7-H6 were negative in 100% and 98.2% of the samples, respectively. PD-L1, B7-H3 and VISTA levels were significantly higher in choriocarcinomas and PSTTs than in ETTs. There was no association between B7 family check-point expression in tumour cells and disease stage, prognostic score or patient outcomes (complete remission versus death). VISTA protein was widely overexpressed in 98.2% of all the GTN, but its expression varied in other cancer types and was negative in normal adult and fetal tissues except placental trophoblasts and splenic lymphocytes. CONCLUSIONS: The GTN trophoblast cells show high expression of PD-L1, B7-H3 and VISTA in a manner that is independent of clinical outcomes. These proteins may be potential immunotherapeutic targets when treating GTN.

PURPOSE: Coagulative necrotic pituitary apoplexy (CNPA) is a clinical entity with unique intraoperative and histopathological manifestations. We aimed to improve the knowledge of this rare disease through the largest case series published to date. METHODS: A retrospective review of 21 CNPA patients was performed from among 5095 patients who underwent surgery for pituitary adenomas at a single institution between January 2009 and June 2017. The demographic, clinical, endocrine, neuroimaging, intraoperative, and histopathological findings, management and prognosis were summarized. RESULTS: Headache was the most common symptom that was observed in 21 patients, followed by visual disturbances (17/21, 81.0%), nausea and vomiting (16/21, 76.2%), electrolyte disturbance (13/21, 61.9%), and oculomotor palsies (10/21, 47.6%). Hypopituitarism with at least one anterior pituitary deficiency, especially panhypopituitarism (10/21, 47.6%), was present in 81.0% of patients. Most patients (81.0%) showed typical MRI appearances. All 21 patients underwent transsphenoidal surgery (TSS), and 16 patients had total tumor resection demonstrated by postoperative MRI. Cottage cheese-like necrosis was observed in 16 patients (76.2%) intraoperatively. Histopathology showed large areas of pink, acellular, coagulative necrotic areas in the central zone, and a pseudocapsule in the border zone. After follow-up for 4.3 ± 2.3 years, only 28.6% of patients still suffered from corticotropic deficiency, and 9.5% of patients had gonadotropic deficiency. These patients were administered the appropriate corresponding hormones for life. CONCLUSIONS: CNPA can be correctly diagnosed preoperatively by typical clinical and MRI characteristics. Early surgery combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy early postoperatively usually yields satisfactory endocrine and neuro-ophthalmic outcomes.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of T-SPOT.TB for tuberculous lymphadenitis. Methods Suspected tuberculous lymphadenitis patients between September 2010 and September 2018 who had both peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB test and lymph node biopsy were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The cutoff value of T-SPOT.TB test for peripheral blood was set as 24 spot forming cell (SFC)/10 6 periphreral blood monocyte cell (PBMC) according to the instruction of testing kits. The gold standard for diagnosis of TBL was the combination of microbiology results, histopathology results and patient's response to anti-TB treatment. Diagnostic efficacy of T-SPOT.TB was evaluated, including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, predictive values, and likelihood ratio. Results Among 91 patients who met the inclusion criteria, we excluded 8 cases with incomplete clinical information and 6 cases who lost to follow-up. According to the gold standard, there were 37 cases of true TBL (9 confirmed TBL and 28 probable TBL), 30 cases of non-TBL, and 10 cases of clinically indeterminate diagnosis who were excluded from the final analyses. The T-SPOT.TB tests yielded 43 cases of positive response and 24 cases of negative response. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ratio (PLR) and negative likelihood ratio (NLR) of peripheral blood T-SPOT.TB for diagnosing TBL were 89.2%, 66.7%, 79.1%, 76.7%, 83.3%, 2.68 and 0.16, respectively. The number of SFCs of T-SPOT.TB in TBL patients [432(134-1264)/10 6 PBMCs] was higher than that in non-TBL patients [0 (0-30) /10 6PBMCs] with a significant difference (Z=-5.306, P <0.001).Conclusion T-SPOT.TB is a rapid and simple diagnostic test for TBL with a high sensitivity and negative predictive value.

Objective To summarize our experiences in the diagnosis and prognosis of different subtypes of primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL). Methods The clinical data of 27 PTL patients who were treated in our hospital from January 1998 to December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. The pathological types of these patients included B cell lymphoma unclassifiable (BCLU) (n=5),mucosa-associated lymphiod tissue lymphoma (MALT) (n=9),diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (n=12),and T cell lymphoma (n=1). Results Of all these 27 cases,the most common clinical symptom was painless swelling of the neck (n=21,77.8%). Of 7 patients who had received preoperative fine needle biopsy,lymphoma was suspected in 2 cases (28.6%). Among these 7 cases,the positive rate of suspicious lymphoma was 66.7% in 3 DLBCL patients,0 in 3 MALT patients,and 0 in 1 BCLU paitent. Also,25 patients underwent intraoperative frozen pathological examination,which revealed lymphoma or suspicious lymphoma in 16 cases (64.0%); in these patients,the positive rate was 66.7% for BCLU,77.8% for MALT,58.3% for DLBCL,and 0 for T-cell lymphomas. The overall survival was (89.3±12.4) months,and the overall 5-year survival rate was 61.6%. The estimated survival in symptomatic group was 31.6 months,which was significantly shorter than that in asymptomatic group (97.9 months) (P=0.032). Other factors including age,sex,tumor size,tumor stage,international prognostic index,tracheal compression,lactate dehydrogenase,residual tumor,and pathological type showed no significant effect on survival(all P>0.05). Conclusions DLBCL has the highest fine needle biopsy positive rate,MALT has the highest frozen pathological positive rate,and intraoperative frozen pathology has more malignant results than the preoperative fine needle biopsy in the diagnosis. The accompanying lymphoma symptoms may be an adverse prognostic factor.

Until today, there is no consistency about the prognosis and the diagnostic criteria of the "malignant" pancreatic solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (m-SPNs). We here made a retrospective study of 26 such cases and try to give a comprehensive description of their pathological characteristics and clinical course. We found out that among those malignant cases, the most common involved extrapancreatic organ was the duodenum, followed by the spleen and the portal vein. The lymph node and the liver metastasis were also seen in 19 % cases, respectively. Most of the patients were female (22/26). Calcification, foamy cytoplasm, and bizarre nuclei of tumor cells were more common in male patients. Every patient underwent surgical resection and had excellent prognosis. There were two patients who had metastasis to the liver 6 years after excision. The recurrence status correlated with the family history of malignant tumor. No patient died of the disease directly during the mean follow-up time of 73.9 months (21-135 months). Our results supported the idea that the prognosis of the advanced stage SPNs was excellent. The surgical resection seemed effectively enough for these patients. However, all the patients need close follow-ups, especially those who had family history of malignant tumors.

Objective To summarize the characteristics of lymph node metastasis in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma accompanied with Graves disease,and to provide evidence for clinical treatment. Methods Totally 98 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma and Graves disease who had been treated in Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2004 to December 2013 were divided into the lymph node metastasis positive group (n=34) and lymph node metastasis negative group (n=64). The general information,blood biochemical results,pathological results,and prognoses were compared between these two groups. Results These two groups showed no significant differences in gender (χ2=0.2113,P=0.6458),age (t=1.7000,P=0.0922),tumor diameter (t=1.2559,P=0.2122),and multifocal tumors (χ2=1.9170,P=0.1661). The median level of thyrotropin receptor antibody (TR-Ab) value in the lymph node metastasis positive group was 4.84 U/L,which was significantly higher than that in the negative group which was 2.99 U/L (t=2.0169,P=0.0465). There were no significant differences in serum thyroid stimulating hormone (t=0.0257,P=0.9800),free triiodothyronine (t=1.3610,P=0.1770),free thyroxine (t=0.0082,P=0.9930),thyroid peroxidase antibody (t=0.0177,P=0.9860),and thyroglobulin antibody levels (t=1.1450,P=0.2550) between two groups. The postoperative pathological results showed that tumor capsular invasion rate (26.5% vs. 9.38%;χ2=5.006,P=0.0253) and lymph node recurrence rate (14.7% vs. 1.56%;χ2=4.583,P=0.0323) were significantly higher in the positive group than in the negative group. The distal metastasis rate in the positive group and negative group were 5.88% and 0,respectively. Conclusions There is no definite association between lymph node metastasis and tumor size in patients with thyroid papillary carcinoma associated with Graves disease. The risk factors for lymph node metastasis include TR-Ab and tumor capsular invasion,with a higher incidence of lymph nodes recurrence.

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is an important molecule in different types of cancers. Its biological effect and therapeutic significance, however, rarely been investigated fully in pancreatic cancer. Immunohistologically, high COMT expression was significantly correlated with the longer overall survival of patients (P < 0.05), indicating its protective nature. The effects of COMT on cell growth, apoptosis, and invasion were evaluated using overexpression and silencing methods. In detail, we carried out experiments using one stably transduced and two transiently transfected pancreatic cancer cell lines in vitro, and one stably transduced cell line in vivo mice xenograft models. In vitro experiments showed that COMT inhibited cell proliferation, enhanced gemcitabine-induced apoptosis, and inhibited cell invasion in stably transduced and transiently transfected cell lines by regulating the PI3K/Akt pathway, p53, and E-cadherin. The COMT overexpressed and silenced cell lines showed significantly inhibited and enhanced growth capacities in in vivo xenograft models, respectively. In conclusion, COMT suppressed pancreatic cancer and its high expression predicted longer survival time. The interaction of COMT with the PI3K/Akt pathway makes it a potential target for therapy.

BACKGROUND: Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) is characterized by interstitial infiltration of T lymphocytes, and subpopulations of these cells may be associated with the progression of fibrosis. However, few studies evaluate the correlation of prognosis with this characteristic. Therefore, we performed morphological and quantitative analyses of T lymphocytes in patients with NSIP and evaluated the relationship between T lymphocytes and prognosis. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the presence of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes in 55 biopsies of patients with NSIP to determine the numbers of these T cell subpopulations in lymphoid follicles as well as in perivascular, interstitial, and peribronchial anatomical compartments. The relationship between CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte populations and prognosis was analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age of 55 patients was 48.9 ± 10.5 years, and 36 (65 %) of patients were women. All patients were followed for a mean duration of 46 ± 25 months. Thirteen (23.6 %) patients died during follow-up. Perivascular CD4+ lymphocyte infiltration (HR, 0.939; 95 % CI, 0.883-0.999; p = 0.048) was an independent risk factor for survival. Perivascular infiltrates of CD4+ T lymphocytes correlated with survival time (r = 0.270, p = 0.046). Patients with improved forced vital capacity survived longer and had higher numbers of CD4+ T lymphocytes that infiltrated perivascular tissue. The densities of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes infiltrating other tissues were not significantly associated with survival time. CONCLUSIONS: Perivascular infiltration of CD4+ T lymphocytes in patients with NSIP correlated with prognosis. The underlying mechanisms are unknown and require further studies.

The Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP)-wrapped steel pipeline system is emerging as an alternative for the repair and long-distance transportation of oil and gas. This system is recognized as a composite material. Under internal pressure, the pipe predominantly undergoes circumferential stretching. This study derives the tensile constitutive model of the steel-CFRP composite material using uniaxial tensile tests and the rule of mixtures. Subsequently, utilizing this newly calibrated constitutive model, a computational model to assess the internal pressure capacity of the steel-carbon fiber composite pipe was established. Finally, a comparison between the theoretical outcomes of the computational model and the actual internal pressure test results revealed a high degree of correlation. This holds substantial significance for the design and practical implementation of this novel composite pipeline system.

To tackle microbial contamination and spoilage during pork storage, transportation, and sales, a novel packaging film with exogenously driven controlled release behavior was designed through the demand-directed preparation of the emulsion of shellac-encapsulated cinnamaldehyde nano-capsules (SNCs) and the ingenious integration of chitosan (CS) film matrix. Among them, the SNCs were synthesized using the solvent exchange method, allowing controlled release of cinnamaldehyde (CA) in response to volatile alkaline substances present in the meat. The electrostatic interaction between SNCs and CS molecules improved the thermal stability, water resistance, tensile strength, and viscosity of the film-forming solution, while the CA in SNCs enhanced UV resistance and antimicrobial properties of the film. Notably, the CS film with SNC-100 loaded (CSNCs-100 film) achieved 99% inhibition against both E. coli and S. aureus, regulated environmental moisture, and prolonged the freshness duration of pork by an impressive six days.

Prostate cancer detected by autopsy is named latent prostate cancer. As the repertoire of clinical prostate cancer, latent cancer may better reflect the disease burden. Unlike clinical prostate specimens, which are obtained exclusively from biopsy-positive cases, prostate specimens obtained through autopsy provide information on biopsy-negative cases, helping calculate the true sensitivity of prostate biopsy. From 2014 to 2021, we collected autopsy specimens of the prostate from body donors in China and performed transperineal and transrectal biopsies on specimens before step-sectioning and pathological measurements. We found that the crude prevalence of latent prostate cancer in middle-aged and elderly men was 35.1% (81/231), which was higher than previous estimates for Chinese populations. The overall per-patient sensitivities of transperineal and transrectal biopsies were not significantly different (33.3% vs. 32.1%, p = 0.82), but the two approaches differed in preferential sampling area along the proximal-distal axis of the prostate. Transperineal biopsy had a higher sensitivity for detecting clinically significant lesions in the distal third (34.7% vs. 16.3%, p = 0.02) and distal half (30.6% vs. 18.1%, p = 0.04), while transrectal biopsy had a higher sensitivity for lesions in the proximal half (25.0% vs. 13.9%, p = 0.046). Both transperineal and transrectal methods of biopsy missed most small lesions (<0.1 mL) and 35.3% (6/17) of large lesions (>0.5 mL). In conclusion, the prevalence of latent prostate cancer in China has increased over the past 2 decades. Systematic transperineal and transrectal methods of biopsy had comparable sensitivities but had different preferential sampling areas. Both approaches miss one-third of large lesions.

The diagnosis of solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas (SPN) can be challenging due to potential confusion with other pancreatic neoplasms, particularly pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), using current pathological diagnostic markers. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of bulk RNA sequencing data from SPNs, NETs, and normal pancreas, followed by experimental validation. This analysis revealed an increased accumulation of peroxisomes in SPNs. Moreover, we observed significant upregulation of the peroxisome marker ABCD1 in both primary and metastatic SPN samples compared with normal pancreas and NETs. To further investigate the potential utility of ABCD1 as a diagnostic marker for SPN via immunohistochemistry staining, we conducted verification in a large-scale patient cohort with pancreatic tumors, including 127 SPN (111 primary, 16 metastatic samples), 108 NET (98 nonfunctional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, NF-NET, and 10 functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, F-NET), 9 acinar cell carcinoma (ACC), 3 pancreatoblastoma (PB), 54 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), 20 pancreatic serous cystadenoma (SCA), 19 pancreatic mucinous cystadenoma (MCA), 12 pancreatic ductal intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN) and 5 intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) samples. Our results indicate that ABCD1 holds promise as an easily applicable diagnostic marker with exceptional efficacy (AUC=0.999, sensitivity=99.10%, specificity=100%) for differentiating SPN from NET and other pancreatic neoplasms through immunohistochemical staining.

Neurosyphilis (NS) is a central nervous system (CNS) infection caused by Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum). NS can occur at any stage of syphilis and manifests as a broad spectrum of clinical symptoms. Often referred to as "the great imitator," NS can be easily overlooked or misdiagnosed due to the absence of standard diagnostic tests, potentially leading to severe and irreversible organ dysfunction. In this study, proteomic and machine learning model techniques are used to characterize 223 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples to identify diagnostic markers of NS and provide insights into the underlying mechanisms of the associated inflammatory responses. Three biomarkers (SEMA7A, SERPINA3, and ITIH4) are validated as contributors to NS diagnosis through multicenter verification of an additional 115 CSF samples. We anticipate that the identified biomarkers will become effective tools for assisting in diagnosis of NS. Our insights into NS pathogenesis in brain tissue may inform therapeutic strategies and drug discoveries for NS patients.

RATIONALE: Myositis ossificans circumscripta (MOC) is a rare disorder that causes heterotopic bone formation in soft tissues. It usually occurs after trauma and affects large muscles of the extremities. MOC of the pectineus muscle is extremely rare and has not been reported to be treated surgically. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old woman presented with left hip pain and dysfunction 4 months after a traffic accident that caused pelvic and humeral fractures and cerebral hemorrhage. DIAGNOSES: Radiological imaging revealed isolated ossification of the left pectineus muscle. The patient was diagnosed with MOC. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent surgical resection of the ossified pectineus muscle followed by local radiation and medical therapy. OUTCOMES: At 12 months postoperatively, she was asymptomatic and had normal hip function. No recurrence was observed on radiography. LESSONS: MOC of the pectineus muscle is a rare condition that can cause severe hip dysfunction. Surgical resection combined with radiation and anti-inflammatory drugs can be an effective treatment option for patients who do not respond to conservative management.

Niobates are very promising anode materials for Li+-storage rooted in their good safety and high capacities. However, the exploration of niobate anode materials is still insufficient. In this work, we explore ~1 wt% carbon-coated CuNb13O33 microparticles (C-CuNb13O33) with a stable shear ReO3 structure as a new anode material to store Li+. C-CuNb13O33 delivers a safe operation potential (~1.54 V), high reversible capacity of 244 mAh g-1, and high initial-cycle Coulombic efficiency of 90.4% at 0.1C. Its fast Li+ transport is systematically confirmed through galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and cyclic voltammetry, which reveal an ultra-high average Li+ diffusion coefficient (~5 × 10-11 cm2 s-1), significantly contributing to its excellent rate capability with capacity retention of 69.4%/59.9% at 10C/20C relative to 0.5C. An in-situ XRD test is performed to analyze crystal-structural evolutions of C-CuNb13O33 during lithiation/delithiation, demonstrating its intercalation-type Li+-storage mechanism with small unit-cell-volume variations, which results in its capacity retention of 86.2%/92.3% at 10C/20C after 3000 cycles. These comprehensively good electrochemical properties indicate that C-CuNb13O33 is a practical anode material for high-performance energy-storage applications.
