RESUMEN

Fluorescence imaging is a vital way to delineate the tumor boundaries. Here, we achieve a NIR-II aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) with a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 12.6% in water through straightforward alkyl side chain modification. After loading of NIR-II AIEgen into polystyrene (PS) nanospheres, the thermal deactivation pathway is extremely limited, thereby concentrating absorption excitation on fluorescence emission. The fluorescence intensity is further enhanced by 5.4 times, the QY increases to 21.1%, and the NIR-II imaging signal is accordingly enhanced by 8.7 times, surpassing conventional DSPE-PEG carriers. The NIR-II@PS nanoprobe showcases superior resolution and tissue penetration depth compared to indocyanine green (ICG) and short-range near-infrared AIEgens. In vivo investigations underscore its tumor-to-normal tissue ratio (3.9) at 24 h post intravenous injection, enabling complete resection of ≤1 mm metastases under NIR-II bioimaging guidance. Additionally, the PS carrier-nanoparticles exhibit low toxicity in vivo, laying a promising foundation for the future design of medical nanomaterials.

OBJECTIVE: Liver fibrosis is a prelude to a host of end-stage liver diseases. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), switching from a quiescent state to myofibroblasts, are the major source for excessive production of extracellular matrix proteins. In the present study, we investigated the role of Suv39h1, a lysine methyltransferase, in HSC-myofibroblast transition and the implication in liver fibrosis. DESIGN: HSC-specific or myofibroblast-specific Suv39h1 deletion was achieved by crossbreeding the Suv39h1 f/f mice to the Lrat-Cre mice or the Postn-CreERT2 mice. Liver fibrosis was induced by CCl4 injection or bile duct ligation. RESULTS: We report that Suv39h1 expression was universally upregulated during HSC-myofibroblast transition in different cell and animal models of liver fibrosis and in human cirrhotic liver tissues. Consistently, Suv39h1 knockdown blocked HSC-myofibroblast transition in vitro. HSC-specific or myofibroblast-specific deletion of Suv39h1 ameliorated liver fibrosis in mice. More importantly, Suv39h1 inhibition by a small-molecule compound chaetocin dampened HSC-myofibroblast transition in cell culture and mitigated liver fibrosis in mice. Mechanistically, Suv39h1 bound to the promoter of heme oxygenase 1 (HMOX1) and repressed HMOX1 transcription. HMOX1 depletion blunted the effects of Suv39h1 inhibition on HSC-myofibroblast transition in vitro and liver fibrosis in vivo. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that HMOX1 might contribute to HSC-myofibroblast transition by modulating retinol homeostasis. Finally, myofibroblast-specific HMOX1 overexpression attenuated liver fibrosis in both a preventive scheme and a therapeutic scheme. CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate a previously unrecognised role for Suv39h1 in liver fibrosis and offer proof-of-concept of its targetability in the intervention of cirrhosis.

Articular cartilage defect is challenged by insufficient regenerative ability of cartilage. Catalpol (CA), the primary active component of Rehmanniae Radix, could exert protective effects against various diseases. However, the impact of CA on the treatment of articular cartilage injuries is still unclear. In this study, full-thickness articular cartilage defect was induced in a mouse model via surgery. The animals were intraperitoneally injected with CA for 4 or 8 weeks. According to the results of macroscopic observation, micro-computed tomography CT (µCT), histological and immunohistochemistry staining, CA treatment could promote mouse cartilage repair, resulting in cartilage regeneration, bone structure improvement and matrix anabolism. Specifically, an increase in the expression of CD90, the marker of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), in the cartilage was observed. In addition, we evaluated the migratory and chondrogenic effects of CA on MSCs. Different concentration of CA was added to C3H10 T1/2 cells. The results showed that CA enhanced cell migration and chondrogenesis without affecting proliferation. Collectively, our findings indicate that CA may be effective for the treatment of cartilage defects via stimulation of endogenous MSCs.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-papillomavirus 9 (α-9) is a member of the human papillomavirus (HPV) α genus, causing 75% invasive cervical cancers worldwide. The purpose of this study was to provide data for effective treatment of HPV-induced cervical lesions in Taizhou by analysing the genetic variation and antigenic epitopes of α-9 HPV E6 and E7. METHODS: Cervical exfoliated cells were collected for HPV genotyping. Positive samples of the α-9 HPV single type were selected for E6 and E7 gene sequencing. The obtained nucleotide sequences were translated into amino acid sequences (protein primary structure) using MEGA X, and positive selection sites of the amino acid sequences were evaluated using PAML. The secondary and tertiary structures of the E6 and E7 proteins were predicted using PSIPred, SWISS-MODEL, and PyMol. Potential T/B-cell epitopes were predicted by Industrial Engineering Database (IEDB). RESULTS: From 2012 to 2023, α-9 HPV accounted for 75.0% (7815/10423) of high-risk HPV-positive samples in Taizhou, both alone and in combination with other types. Among these, single-type-positive samples of α-9 HPV were selected, and the entire E6 and E7 genes were sequenced, including 298 HPV16, 149 HPV31, 185 HPV33, 123 HPV35, 325 HPV52, and 199 HPV58 samples. Compared with reference sequences, 34, 12, 10, 2, 17, and 17 nonsynonymous nucleotide mutations were detected in HPV16, 31, 33, 35, 52, and 58, respectively. Among all nonsynonymous nucleotide mutations, 19 positive selection sites were selected, which may have evolutionary significance in rendering α-9 HPV adaptive to its environment. Immunoinformatics predicted 57 potential linear and 59 conformational B-cell epitopes, many of which are also predicted as CTL epitopes. CONCLUSION: The present study provides almost comprehensive data on the genetic variations, phylogenetics, positive selection sites, and antigenic epitopes of α-9 HPV E6 and E7 in Taizhou, China, which will be helpful for local HPV therapeutic vaccine development.

Achieving ultrabright fluorogens is a key issue for fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS). Fluorogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) are potential agents for FGS on the benefit of the bright fluorescence in physiological conditions. Herein, the fluorescence brightness of AIEgen is further improved by preparing the nanoparticle using a polystyrene-based matrix and utilizing it for tumor FGS with a high signal-to-background ratio. After encapsulating AIEgen into polystyrene-poly (ethylene glycol) (PS-PEG), the fluorescence intensity of the prepared AIE@PS-PEG nanoparticles is multiple times that of nanoparticles in 1, 2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-poly (ethylene glycol) (DSPE-PEG), a commonly used polymer matrix for nanoparticle preparation. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that higher free energy is required for the outer rings of AIEgen to rotate in polystyrene than in the DSPE, indicating that the benzene rings in polystyrene can restrict the intramolecular motions of AIEgen better than the alkyl chain in DSPE-PEG. Fluorescence correlation microscopy detections suggest that the triplet excited state of AIEgens is less in PS-PEG than in DSPE-PEG. The restricted intramolecular motions and suppressed triplet excited state result in ultrabright AIE@PS-PEG nanoparticles, which are more conducive to illuminating tumor tissues in the intestine for FGS. The illumination of metastatic tumors in lungs by AIE@PS-PEG nanoparticles is also tried.

BACKGROUND: Among the POSEIDON criteria, group 3 and group 4 have an expected low prognosis. For those patients with inadequate ovary reserve, embryo accumulated from consecutive oocyte retrieval cycles for multiple frozen-thawed embryo transfers (FET) has become more common. It is necessary to inform them of the pregnancy outcomes after single or multiple FET cycles before the treatment. However few studies about cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) for those with low prognosis have been reported. METHODS: This retrospective study included 4712 patients undergoing frozen embryo transfer cycles from July 2015 to August 2020. Patients were stratified as POSEIDON group 3, group 4, control 1 group (< 35 years) and control 2 group (≥ 35 years). The primary outcome is CLBRs up to six FET cycles and the secondary outcomes were LBRs per transfer cycle. Optimistic approach was used for the analysis of CLBRs and the depiction of cumulative incidence curves. RESULTS: Under optimistic model analyses, control 1 group exhibited the highest CLBR (93.98%, 95%CI 91.63-95.67%) within 6 FET cycles, followed by the CLBR from women in POSEIDON group 3(92.51%, 95%CI 77.1-97.55)was slightly lower than that in control 1 group. The CLBR of POSEIDON group 4(55% ,95%CI 39.34-70.66%)was the lowest and significantly lower than that of control 2 group(88.7%, 95%CI 80.68-96.72%). Further, patients in POSEIDON group 4 reached a CLBR plateau after 5 FET cycles. CONCLUSIONS: The patients of POSEIDON group 3 may not be considered as traditional "low prognosis" in clinical practice as extending the number of FET cycles up to 6 can archive considerably CLBR as control women. While for the POSEIDON group 4, a simple repeat of the FET cycle is not recommended after four failed FET cycles, some strategies such as PGT-A may be beneficial.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the research on symptom management in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients has shifted from a single symptom to symptom clusters and network analysis. This study collected and evaluated unpleasant symptoms in PD patients and explored groups of symptoms that may affect PD patients with a view to higher symptom management. METHODS: The symptoms of PD patients were measured using the modified Dialysis Symptom Index. The symptom network and node characteristics were assessed by network analysis, and symptom clusters were explored by factor analysis. RESULTS: In this study of 602 PD patients (mean age 47.8 ± 16.8 years, 47.34% male), most had less than 2 years of dialysis experience. Five symptom clusters were obtained from factor analysis, which were body symptom cluster, gastrointestinal symptom cluster, mood symptom cluster, sexual disorder symptom cluster, and skin-sleep symptom cluster. Itching and decreased interest in sex may be sentinel symptoms, and being tired or lack of energy and feeling anxious are core symptoms in PD patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasizes the importance of recognizing symptom clusters in PD patients for better symptom management. Five clusters were identified, with key symptoms including itching, decreased interest in sex, fatigue, and anxiety. Early intervention focused on these symptom clusters in PD patients holds promise for alleviating the burden of symptoms.

The formation of phosphorus-rich alanes featuring butterfly-like geometries is achieved. The two-electron reduction products feature a unique P4 2- structure and can act as a source of P3-. The treatment of these phosphorus containing products with electrophiles under mild conditions results in the formation of different phosphines. This approach eliminates the need for high temperatures and/or high pressures, which are commonly required in industrial processes for the preparation of useful phosphines.The activation and further functionalization of white phosphorus (P4) by main group complexes has become an increasingly studied topic in recent times. Herein, we report the controlled formation of phosphorus-rich alanes featuring butterfly-like geometries from the selective reaction of P4 with dialumenes, ([L(IiPr)Al]2) (1: L=Tripp=2,4,6-iPr3C6H2; 2: L=tBu2MeSi; IiPr=[MeCN(iPr)]2C)). The two-electron-reduction product of P4 features a P4 2- structure and is shown to be able to act as a source of P3-. Treatments of different electrophiles (e.g., chlorotrimethylsilane (Me3SiCl), iodotrimethylsilane (Me3SiI), HCl, or acetyl chloride (CH3COCl)) with these alanes under mild conditions gave the corresponding phosphines (e.g., P(SiMe3)3, PH3, or P(COCH3)3).

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the pathogenic factors of glucocorticoids (GCs)-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (GONFH) and its underlying pathogenesis in vivo and in vitro. METHODS: Radiographical (µCT) scanning, histopathological, immunohistochemical, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and tunel staining were conducted on GONFH patients and rats. ROS, tunel, flow cytometry, alkaline phosphatase, Oil red O staining, reverse transcription­quantitative PCR and western blotting were applied to elucidate the exact pathogenesis mechanism. RESULTS: Clinical and animal studies demonstrated increased levels of ROS, aggravated oxidative stress (OS) microenvironment, augmented apoptosis and imbalance in osteogenic/lipogenic in the GONFH group compared to the control group. The fate of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) directed by GCs is a crucial factor in determining GONFH. In vitro studies further revealed that GCs promote excessive ROS production through the expression of NOX family proteins, leading to a deterioration of the OS microenvironment in MSCs, ultimately resulting in apoptosis and imbalance in osteogenic/lipogenic differentiation. Furthermore, our results confirmed that the NOX inhibitor-diphenyleneiodonium chloride and the NF-κB inhibitor-BAY 11-7082 ameliorated apoptosis and osteogenic/lipogenic differentiation imbalance of MSCs induced by an excess of GCs. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated for the first time that the aggravation of the OS microenvironment in MSCs caused by high doses of GCs leading to apoptosis and differentiation imbalance is a crucial factor in the pathogenesis of GONFH, mediated through activating the NOX/ROS/NF-κB signaling pathway.

STUDY QUESTION: Do distinct subpopulations of decidual stromal cells (DSCs) exist and if so, are given subpopulations enriched in recurrent miscarriage (RM)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Three subpopulations of DSCs were identified from which inflammatory DSCs (iDSCs) and glycolytic DSCs (glyDSCs) are significantly enriched in RM, with implicated roles in driving decidual inflammation and immune dysregulation. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: DSCs play crucial roles in establishing and maintaining a successful pregnancy; dysfunction of DSCs has been considered as one of the key reasons for the development of RM. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: We collected 15 early decidual samples from five healthy donors (HDs) and ten RM patients to perform single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). A total of 43 RM patients and 37 HDs were enrolled in the validation cohort. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Non-immune cells and immune cells of decidual tissues were sorted by flow cytometry to perform scRNA-seq. We used tissue microarrays (TMA) to validate three distinct subpopulations of DSCs. The expression of inflammatory and glycolytic proteins by DSCs was validated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and multiplex immunohistochemistry (mIHC). Different subsets of decidual NK (dNK) cells and macrophages were also validated by multicolor flow cytometry and mIHC. Cell ligand-receptor and spatial analyses between DSCs and immune cells were analyzed by mIHC. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: We classify the DSCs into three subtypes based on scRNA-seq data: myofibroblastic (myDSCs), inflammatory (iDSCs) and glycolytic (glyDSCs), with the latter two being significantly enriched in RM patients. The distribution patterns of DSC subtypes in the RM and HD groups were validated by mIHC. Single-cell analyses indicate that the differentiation of iDSCs and glyDSCs may be coupled with the degrees of hypoxia. Consequently, we propose a pathological model in which a vicious circle is formed and fueled by hypoxic stress, uncontrolled inflammation and aberrant glycolysis. Furthermore, our results show that the inflammatory SPP1+ macrophages and CD18+ dNK cells are preferentially increased in the decidua of RM patients. Cell ligand-receptor and mIHC spatial analyses uncovered close interactions between pathogenic DSCs and inflammatory SPP1+ macrophages and CD18+ NK cells in RM patients. LARGE SCALE DATA: The raw single-cell sequence data reported in this paper were deposited at the National Omics Data Encyclopedia (www.biosino.org), under the accession number OEP002901. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: The number of decidual samples for scRNA-seq was limited and in-depth functional studies on DSCs are warranted in future studies. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Identification of three DSC subpopulations opens new avenues for further investigation of their roles in RM patients. BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) 33 belongs to the Alphapapillomavirus 9 (α-9 HPV) species group, which also contains types 16, 31, 35, 52, 58 and 67. The purpose of this study was to investigate the genetic variations of HPV33 and to explore its carcinogenicity among women in Taizhou, Southeast China. METHODS: Exfoliated cervical cells were collected for HPV genotyping. Only single HPV33 infection cases were selected, and their E6 and E7 genes were sequenced using the ABI 3730xl sequencer and then analysed using MEGA X. RESULTS: From 2014 to 2020, a total of 185 single HPV33-positive specimens were successfully amplified. We obtained 15 distinct HPV33 E6/E7 variants, which were published in GenBank under accession numbers OQ672665-OQ672679. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all HPV33 E6/E7 variants belonged to lineage A, of which 75.7% belonged to lineage A1. Compared with CIN1, the proportion of sublineage A1 in CIN2/3 was higher, but there was no significant difference (76.5% vs. 80.6%, P > 0.05). Altogether, 20 single nucleotide substitutions were identified, of which 6 were novel substitutions, including T196G (C30G), A447T, G458T (R117L), G531A, A704A, and C740T. In addition, no significant trends were observed between the nucleotide substitutions of HPV33 E6/E7 variants and the risk of cervical lesions. CONCLUSION: This study provides the most comprehensive data on genetic variations, phylogenetics and carcinogenicity of HPV33 E6/E7 variants in Southeast China to date. The data confirmed that cervical lesions among women in Taizhou are attributable to HPV33, which may be due to the high infection rate of sublineage A1 in the population.

As one of the most important human fungal pathogens, Candida albicans senses and adapts to host niches with different pH values through the pH-responsive Rim101 pathway. Its transcription factor Rim101 activates the expression of alkaline pH-induced genes including PHR1 that encodes a glycosylphosphatidylinsitol-anchored ß(1,3)-glucanosyltransferase critical for hyphal wall formation. The calcium/calcineurin signaling pathway is mediated by the transcription factor Crz1 in yeasts and other lower eukaryotes. Here we report that deletion of PHR1 leads to calcium sensitivity of C. albicans cells. In addition, expression of Phr1 is induced by calcium stress and under the control of Crz1 in C. albicans. EMSA assay demonstrates that Crz1 binds to one CDRE element in the PHR1 promoter. Alkaline treatment induces two species of glycosylated Phr1 proteins with different degrees of glycosylation, which is independent of Crz1. In contrast, only one species of Phr1 protein with a low degree of glycosylation is induced by calcium stress in a Crz1-dependent fashion. Therefore, we have provided an evidence that regulation of cell wall remodeling is integrated through differential degrees of Phr1 glycosylation by both the pH-regulated Rim101 pathway and the calcium/calcineurin signaling pathway in C. albicans. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements and the potential composition of rectal carcinoma. METHODS: Twenty-four patients provided informed consent for this study. DCE-MRI was performed before total mesorectal excision. Quantitative parameters were calculated based on a modified Tofts model. Whole-mount immunohistochemistry and Masson staining sections were generated and digitized at histological resolution. The percentage of tissue components area was measured. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlations between pathological parameters and DCE-MRI parameters. RESULTS: On the World Health Organization (WHO) grading scale, there were significant differences in extracellular extravascular space (Ktrans) (F = 9.890, P = 0.001), mean transit time (MTT) (F = 9.890, P = 0.038), CDX-2 (F = 4.935, P = 0.018), and Ki-67 (F = 4.131, P = 0.031) among G1, G2, and G3. ECV showed significant differences in extramural venous invasion (t = - 2.113, P = 0.046). Ktrans was strongly positively correlated with CD34 (r = 0.708, P = 0.000) and moderately positively correlated with vimentin (r = 0.450, P = 0.027). Interstitial volume (Ve) was moderately positively correlated with Masson's (r = 0.548, P = 0.006) and vimentin (r = 0.417, P = 0.043). There was a moderate negative correlation between Ve and CDX-2 (r = - 0.441, P = 0.031). The rate constant from extracellular extravascular space to blood plasma (Kep) showed a strong positive correlation with CD34 expression (r = 0.622, P = 0.001). ECV showed a moderate negative correlation with CDX-2 (r = - 0.472, P = 0.020) and a moderate positive correlation with collagen fibers (r = 0.558, P = 0.005). CONCLUSION: The dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI-derived parameters measured in rectal cancer were significantly correlated with the proportion of histological components. This may serve as an optimal imaging biomarker to identify tumor tissue components.

Bletilla striata is a perennial Orchidaceae which is widely distributed in Anhui, Hubei, Guizhou, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and other provinces in China (He et al. 2017). It has the effects of convergence, haemostasis, clearing away heat and detoxification, reducing swelling and generating muscle (He et al. 2017; Xu et al. 2019). With the reduction in wild resources of B. striata, cultivation can promote the effective conservation of B. striata germplasm resources. Fusarium root rot, leaf spot disease, and other diseases have been reported on this plant in China (Wang et al. 2022, Xu et al. 2022, Zhou et al. 2022). Coleosporium bletiae on B. striata has been reported in Guizhou, Sichuan, and Hubei provinces in China, with frequent occurrence and serious disease incidences in Guizhou province (Xu et al. 2022). In April to November 2021, rust was found in Anhui Bletilla planting base (30°09' to 30°46'N; 115°45' to 116°30'E). Approximately 17% of the B. striata plants showed disease symptoms (Figure S1). Uredinia are hypophyllous, scattered, round, powdery, and are associated with chlortic spots 1-4 mm wide on the upper side of the leaves. After mid-October, the temperature gradually decreased, and reddish-brown telia appeared around uredinia in circular shape. A total of 60 samples with typical symptoms were collected. Urediospore and teliospores were obtained by sterile needles, and their sizes were observed and measured under a microscope with sterile water. Urediospores were orange‒yellow, mainly oval in shape, 27.2-36.8 µm× 17.6-22.8 µm (n=60), and uniformly covered by verrucae on the surface (Figure S2 a-b). Teliospores were clavate, with a smooth surface and golden yellow contents, and gradually narrowed from top to base, ranging in size from 85.33-109.66 µm× 15.27-20.35 µm (n=60) (Figures S2 c-e). Three samples with typical symptoms were selected; approximately 200 µg of Urediospore of the rust pathogen were colleced per sampleand placed in 1.5 mL sterile centrifuge tubes for genomic DNA extraction by the CTAB method (Xu et al. 2022). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA and large subunit (LSU) RNA genes were amplified using primer pairs ITS1/ITS4 (Leclerc et al., 2000) and NL1/NL4 (Zhang et al. 2012), respectively. The obtained sequences were deposited in GenBank (OP363678 for ITS and OP363683 for LSU), which were 100% identical with 100% coverage to the ITS sequence (MN108161, locality: Hubei) and the LSU sequence (KX386038) of Coleosporium bletiae. Based on morphological characteristics and DNA sequences, the isolates were identified as C. bletiae (Figures S2 and Figure S3). To confirm pathogenicity, 2-year-old healthy plants of B. striata were sprayed with 5 mL of urediospore suspension (2.6×105/mL). Plants sprayed with sterile distilled water were used as control. The test was conducted in an artificial climate incubator at 25 ± 1°C with a 12 h light/12 h dark photoperiod (relative humidity = 90%). The experiment was repeated three times. Two weeks after inoculation, typical yellowish chlorosis spots appeared on the leaf surface and a few yellow spore piles appeared on the leaves, which was consistent with the field symptoms (Figure S4). Control plants remained healthy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. bletiae causing rust on B. striata in Anhui province of China. Correct identification of this disease is of great importance to develop management strategies to control the disease. There may be seedling transport and spore transmission between Hubei and Anhui.

In event-driven wireless sensor networks (WSNs), a reliable, efficient, and scalable routing solution is required for the reliable delivery of sensory data to the base station (BS). However, existing routing algorithms rarely address the issue of energy efficiency under multi-path conflicts for multi-event-driven scenarios. In order to maximize energy efficiency while maintaining a manageable conflict probability, this paper investigates a cross-layer design of routing and power control for multi-event-driven WSNs. We first develop a mathematical characterization of the conflict probability in multi-path routing, and we then formulate the energy efficiency maximization problem as a non-convex combinatorial fractional optimization problem subject to a maximum conflict probability constraint. By utilizing non-linear fractional programming and dual decomposition, an iterative search algorithm was used to obtain near-optimal power allocation and routing solutions. Extensive results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieved a gain of 9.09% to 35.05% in energy efficiency compared to other routing algorithms, thus indicating that our proposed algorithm can avoid unnecessary control overhead from multi-path conflicts with a lower conflict probability and can ensure maximum energy efficiency through routing and power control design.

PURPOSE: Various physiological and psychological negative situations experienced by nurses as a result of COVID-19 pandemic have been shown to increase their perception of organizational difficulty and decrease their career commitment, thereby accelerating the turnover rate of nurses. Resilience and career adaptability have important influences on career commitment, so there is a need to evaluate the relationships between them and the underlying mechanisms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using a cross-lagged design, the Career Adaptability Scale, the Chinese version of career commitment, and Davidson's Resilience Scale as research methods, we studied 692 nursing students for two consecutive years to evaluate the relationship among career adaptability, resilience, and career commitment. RESULTS: Career adaptability at T1 substantially and positively predicts the career commitment at T2. Career adaptability and resilience are mutually predictive. No interaction is found between resilience and career commitment over time. There is a substantial difference in the cross-lagged relationship among career adaptability, resilience, and career commitment for low- and high-career interest. CONCLUSION: Our results show the importance of developing career commitment early on. Developing career adaptability, enhancing resilience, and increasing career interest in nursing students might help to increase career commitment.

Air pollution is a global public health concern, and numerous studies have attempted to identify the health effects of air pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In China, there are few studies investigating the relationship between NO2 exposure and symptoms among children at an individual level. The aim of the study was to evaluate the acute effects of NO2 on prevalence of symptoms of primary students. An environmental and health questionnaire survey was administered to 4240 primary students in seven districts of Shanghai. Daily symptoms, as well as the daily air pollution and meteorological data from each community, were recorded during the corresponding period. A multivariable logistic regression model was utilized to analyze the relationship between the prevalence of symptoms and NO2 exposure in school-age children. A model with interaction items was adopted to estimate the interactive effects of NO2 and confounding factors on symptoms. The average NO2 level in central urban, industrial and rural areas were 62.07 ± 21.66, 54.86 ± 18.32 and 36.62 ± 21.23 µg m-3, respectively. Our findings demonstrate that the occurrence of symptoms was significantly affected by NO2 exposure in the short-term. The largest associations were observed for a 10 µg m-3 increase in 5-day moving average (lag04) NO2 concentration with prevalence of general symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 1.15, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.07-1.22), throat symptoms (OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.13-1.35) and nasal symptoms (OR = 1.142, 95% CI: 1.02-1.27). Subgroup analysis showed that non-rural areas, boys, nearby environmental pollution source and history of present illness were all susceptible factors to the effects of NO2 exposure. Furthermore, there were interactive effects between NO2 exposure and area types on reported symptoms. NO2 can increase the risk of symptoms in primary students in the short-term, which could be significantly enhanced in central urban and industrial areas.

The present study aimed to investigate the longitudinal and reciprocal relationships among problematic smartphone use (PSU), depressive symptoms (DS), and suicidal ideation (SI) in Chinese university students. Using a cross-lagged design, the Mobile Phone Addiction Inventory Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the Self-Rating Idea of Suicide Scale as research instruments, 194 university students completed a questionnaire four consecutive times. June of Year 1, December of Year 2, June of Year 2, and December of Year 3 of their college study. We refer to these as the Time 1 (T1), Time 2 (T2), Time 3 (T3), and Time 4 (T4) assessments, respectively. The levels of PSU and DS fluctuated significantly over time. DS at T1 was significantly predicted to influence SI at T2 (ß = 0.17, p < .05); DS at T3 was significantly predicted by PSU and by SI at T2 (respectively, ß = 0.30, p < .05; ß = 0.21, p < .05); DS at T2 significantly predicted PSU at T3 (ß = 0.14, p < .05); and DS at T3 significantly predicted SI at T4 (ß = 0.14, p < .05) in the cross-lagged pathway. DS at T3 fully mediated the relationship between PSU at T2 and SI at T4 (indirect effect: ß = 0.133, 95% CI = [0.063, 0.213]). The results suggest that there is a reciprocal relationship between PSU and DS and, furthermore, that DS plays an important mediating role between PSU and SI. Our results suggest the importance of early identification and treatment of SI. Timely reduction of PSU and improvement of DS among university students may help prevent SI.

Facile access to dimeric heavier aluminum chalcogenides [(NHC)Al(Tipp)-µ-Ch]2 (NHC=IiPr (1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene, IMe4 (1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene); Tipp=2,4,6-iPr3 C6 H2 ; Ch=Se, Te) by treatment of NHC-stabilized aluminum dihydrides with elemental Se and Te is reported. The higher affinity of IMe4 in comparison with IiPr toward the Al center in [(NHC)Al(Tipp)-µ-Ch]2 can be used for ligand exchange. Additionally, the presence of excess IMe4 allows for cleavage of the dimers to form a rare example of a neutral multiply bonded heavier aluminum chalcogenide in the form of a tetracoordinate aluminum complex, (IMe4 )2 (Tipp)Al=Te. This species reacts with three equivalents of CO2 across two Al-CNHC and the Al=Te bond affording a pentacoordinate aluminum complex containing a dianionic tellurocarbonate ligand [CO2 Te]2- , which is the first example of tellurium analogue of a carbonate [CO3 ]2- .

BACKGROUND: Sepsis still remains a major challenge in intensive care medicine with unacceptably high mortality among patients with septic shock. Due to current limitations of human CD19+CD24hiCD38hi Breg cells (Bregs) studies among sepsis, here, we tried to evaluate Bregs in severity and prognostic value in patients with sepsis. METHODS: Peripheral blood from 58 patients with sepsis and 22 healthy controls was analyzed using flow cytometry to evaluate the frequency and number of Bregs. All cases were divided into non-survived or survived group after 28 days followed up. Spearman's correlation analysis was performed on Bregs frequency and clinical indices. The area under the curve was acquired using the receiver operating characteristic analysis to assess the sensitivity and specificity of Bregs for outcome of sepsis. Survival curve analysis and binary logistic regression were applied to estimate the value of Bregs in prognosis among cases with sepsis. RESULTS: Sepsis patients had decreased proportions and number of Bregs. Sepsis patients with low frequency of Bregs were associated with an increased risk of septic shock. Bregs frequency is inversely associated with lactate, SOFA, and APACHE II and positively correlated with Tregs frequency. Low levels of Bregs closely correlated with septic outcomes. Numbers of Bregs were prediction factors for poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Frequency and number of Bregs decreased, and Bregs deficiency revealed poor prognosis in patients with sepsis.
