RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To unveil the pathological changes associated with demyelination in schizophrenia (SZ) and its consequential impact on interstitial fluid (ISF) drainage, and to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of ursolic acid (UA) in treating demyelination and the ensuing abnormalities in ISF drainage in SZ. METHODS: Female C57BL/6J mice, aged 6-8 weeks and weighing (20±2) g, were randomly divided into three groups: control, SZ model, and UA treatment. The control group received intraperitoneal injection (ip) of physiological saline and intragastric administration (ig) of 1% carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na). The SZ model group was subjected to ip injection of 2 mg/kg dizocilpine maleate (MK-801) and ig administration of 1% CMC-Na. The UA treatment group underwent ig administration of 25 mg/kg UA and ip injection of 2 mg/kg MK-801. The treatment group received UA pretreatment via ig administration for one week, followed by a two-week drug intervention for all the three groups. Behavioral assessments, including the open field test and prepulse inhibition experiment, were conducted post-modeling. Subsequently, changes in the ISF partition drainage were investigated through fluorescent tracer injection into specific brain regions. Immunofluorescence analysis was employed to examine alterations in aquaporin 4 (AQP4) polarity distribution in the brain and changes in protein expression. Myelin reflex imaging using Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (LSCM) was utilized to study modifications in myelin within the mouse brain. Quantitative data underwent one-way ANOVA, followed by TukeyHSD for post hoc pairwise comparisons between the groups. RESULTS: The open field test revealed a significantly longer total distance [(7 949.39±1 140.55) cm vs. (2 831.01±1 212.72) cm, P < 0.001] and increased central area duration [(88.43±22.06) s vs. (56.85±18.58) s, P=0.011] for the SZ model group compared with the controls. The UA treatment group exhibited signifi-cantly reduced total distance [(2 415.80±646.95) cm vs. (7 949.39±1 140.55) cm, P < 0.001] and increased central area duration [(54.78±11.66) s vs. (88.43±22.06) s, P=0.007] compared with the model group. Prepulse inhibition test results demonstrated a markedly lower inhibition rate of the startle reflex in the model group relative to the controls (P < 0.001 for both), with the treatment group displaying significant improvement (P < 0.001 for both). Myelin sheath analysis indicated significant demyelination in the model group, while UA treatment reversed this effect. Fluorescence tracing exhibited a significantly larger tracer diffusion area towards the rostral cortex and reflux area towards the caudal thalamus in the model group relative to the controls [(13.93±3.35) mm2 vs. (2.79±0.94) mm2, P < 0.001 for diffusion area; (2.48±0.38) mm2 vs. (0.05±0.12) mm2, P < 0.001 for reflux area], with significant impairment of drainage in brain regions. The treatment group demonstrated significantly reduced tracer diffusion and reflux areas [(7.93±2.48) mm2 vs. (13.93±3.35) mm2, P < 0.001 for diffusion area; (0.50±0.30) mm2 vs. (2.48±0.38) mm2, P < 0.001 for reflux area]. Immunofluorescence staining revealed disrupted AQP4 polarity distribution and reduced AQP4 protein expression in the model group compared with the controls [(3 663.88±733.77) µm2 vs. (13 354.92±4 054.05) µm2, P < 0.001]. The treatment group exhibited restored AQP4 polarity distribution and elevated AQP4 protein expression [(11 104.68±3 200.04) µm2 vs. (3 663.88±733.77) µm2, P < 0.001]. CONCLUSION: UA intervention ameliorates behavioral performance in SZ mice, Thus alleviating hyperactivity and anxiety symptoms and restoring sensorimotor gating function. The underlying mechanism may involve the improvement of demyelination and ISF drainage dysregulation in SZ mice.

RESUMEN

Janus heterostructures consisting of multiple jointed components with distinct properties have gained growing interest in the photoredox catalytic field. Herein, we have developed a facile low-temperature method to gain anisotropic one-dimensional Au-tipped CdS (Au-CdS) nanorods (NRs), followed by assembling Ru molecular co-catalyst (RuN5) onto the surface of the NRs. The CdS NRs decorated with plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) and RuN5 complex harness the virtues of metal-semiconductor and inorganic-organic interface, giving directional charge transfer channels, spatially separated reaction sites, and enhanced local electric field distribution. As a result, the Au-CdS-RuN5 can act as an efficient dual-function photocatalyst for simultaneous H2 evolution and valorization of biomass-derived alcohols. Benefiting from the interfacial charge decoupling and selective chemical bond activation, the optimal all-in-one Au-CdS-RuN5 heterostructure shows greatly enhanced photoactivity and selectivity as compared to bare CdS NRs, along with a remarkable apparent quantum yield of 40.2% at 400 nm. The structural evolution and working mechanism of the heterostructures are systematically analyzed based on experimental and computational results.

RESUMEN

Controlling ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in the controlled ovarian hyperstimulation treatment is necessary to increase the implantation success rate. This study aimed to explore the effect of naringin on the endometrial receptivity of OHSS rats. Female rats were randomly assigned to six groups: Blank, model, low-dose naringin (100 mg/kg/day), medium-dose naringin (200 mg/kg/day), high-dose naringin (400 mg/kg/day), and positive (0.18 mg/kg/day estradiol valerate) groups. Except for the blank group, rats established the OHSS model on Day 7, and their treatments were from Day 0 to 14, separately. Hematoxylin and eosin, immunohistochemical, and scanning electron microscopy were performed to detect the naringin effects on the endometrial receptivity of the OHSS model. Next, circRNAs transcriptome analysis was performed to screen circRNAs. Western blot analysis and real-time quantitative PCR were used to verify it. Our study showed that naringin treatments increased embryo number, endometrial thickness, pinopodes number, and Ki67 expression in the OHSS rats. Moreover, the result of circRNAs transcriptome sequencing showed that naringin significantly inhibited the rnocirc_008140 expression in the OHSS rats and significantly inhibited the changes of 28 gene ontology terms and three Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways which were induced by OHSS. Abcc4 and Rps6ka5 genes were the enriched genes of those pathways. Finally, 24 miRNA target genes of rnocirc_008140 were predicted. Our study showed that naringin significantly improved the endometrial receptivity of OHSS rats to increase the embryo implantation success by reducing rnocirc_008140-adsorbed miRNAs to regulate Abcc4 and Rps6ka5 expression.

RESUMEN

The simultaneous utilization of electrons and holes to couple photocatalytic H2 production with selective biomass transformation has attracted immense interest toward achieving sustainability in the fields of energy and chemical industry. In this study, by assembling highly dispersed Ni(OH)2 onto ZnIn2S4 (ZIS), efficient H2 evolution along with highly selective photocatalytic oxidation of furfuryl alcohol (FA) to furfural (FF) in pure water was achieved under anaerobic conditions. The H2 production and FA conversion rates over the optimal Ni-ZIS sample reached about 686 and 583 µmol g-1 h-1, respectively, about 4.9 and 1.7 folds as those of pure ZIS. Moreover, the formation of by-products with C-C coupling was dramatically suppressed over Ni-ZIS, resulting in higher selectivity for FF (97%), which is about 2.7-fold that of pure ZIS (36%). Deep mechanistic studies were conducted to reveal the structural evolution and cocatalyst effects of Ni(OH)2. This study not only offers a feasible paradigm for modifying the surface of catalysts to tune the photoactivity and selectivity for product-oriented alcohol oxidation coupled with efficient H2 production in water but also reveals the working mechanism of the deposited Ni(OH)2 over ZIS toward coupling reactions.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Conventional supine emergence and prone extubation from general endotracheal anesthesia (GEA) are associated with extubation-related adverse events (ERAEs). Given the minimally invasive nature of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as well as the improved ventilation/perfusion matching and easier airway opening in the prone position, we aimed to assess the safety of prone emergence and extubation in patients undergoing ERCP under GEA. METHODS: Totally, 242 eligible patients were recruited and randomized into the supine extubation group (n = 121; supine group) and the prone extubation group (n = 121; prone group). The primary endpoint was the incidence of ERAEs during emergence, including hemodynamic fluctuations, coughing, stridor, and hypoxemia requiring airway maneuvers. The secondary endpoints included the incidence of monitoring disconnections, extubation time, recovery time, room exit time, and post-procedure sore throat. RESULTS: The incidence of ERAEs was significantly lower in the prone group compared with the supine group (8.3% vs 34.7%, OR = 0.17, 95% CI 0.18-0.56; P < 0.001). Moreover, the prone group demonstrated no monitoring disconnections, shorter extubation time and room exit time, faster recovery, and, lower frequency and milder sore throat after the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: For patients undergoing ERCP under GEA, compared with supine, prone emergence, and extubation had remarkably lower rates of EAREs and better recovery, and can maintain continuous monitoring and improve efficiency.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To provide prenatal diagnosis, pedigree analysis and genetic counseling for a pregnant woman who had given birth to a child featuring global developmental delay. METHODS: A pregnant woman who underwent prenatal diagnosis at the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University in August 2021 was selected as the study subject. Peripheral blood samples were collected from the woman, her husband and child, in addition with amniotic fluid sample during mid-pregnancy. Genetic variants were detected by G-banded karyotyping analysis and copy number variation sequencing (CNV-seq). Pathogenicity of the variant was predicted based on the guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG). Candidate variant was traced in the pedigree to assess the recurrence risk. RESULTS: The karyotypes of the pregnant woman, her fetus, and affected child were 46,XX,ins(18)(p11.2q21q22), 46,X?,rec(18)dup(18)(q21q22)ins(18)(p11.2q21q22)mat and 46,XY,rec(18)del(18)(q21q22)ins(18)(p11.2q21q22)mat, respectively. Her husband was found to have a normal karyotype. CNV-seq has revealed a 19.73 Mb duplication at 18q21.2-q22.3 in the fetus and a 19.77 Mb deletion at 18q21.2-q22.3 in her child. The duplication and deletion fragments were identical to the insertional fragment in the pregnant woman. Based on the ACMG guidelines, the duplication and deletion fragments were both predicted to be pathogenic. CONCLUSION: The intrachromosomal insertion of 18q21.2-q22.3 carried by the pregnant woman had probably given rise to the 18q21.2-q22.3 duplication and deletion in the two offspring. Above finding has provided a basis for genetic counseling for this pedigree.

RESUMEN

Long noncoding (lnc)RNAs are reported to be key regulators of tumor progression, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The lncRNA long intergenic noncoding RNA 00673 (LINC00673) was indicated to play an important role in HCC progression, but the impacts of genetic variants (single-nucleotide polymorphisms, SNPs) of LINC00673 on HCC remain unclear. A TaqMan allelic discrimination assay was performed to analyze the genotypes of three tagging SNPs, viz., rs9914618 G > A, rs6501551 A > G, and rs11655237 C > T, of LINC00673 in 783 HCC patients and 1197 healthy subjects. Associations of functional SNPs of LINC00673 with HCC susceptibility and clinicopathologic variables were analyzed by logistic regression models. After stratification by confounding factor, we observed that elderly patients (≥60 years) with the LINC00673 rs9914618 A allele had an increased risk of developing HCC under a codominant model (p = 0.025) and dominant model (p = 0.047). Moreover, elderly patients carrying the GA + AA genotype of rs9914618 exhibited a higher risk of having lymph node metastasis compared to those who were homozygous for the major allele (p = 0.013). Genotype screening of rs9914618 in HCC cell lines showed that cells carrying the AA genotype expressed higher LINC00673 levels compared to the cells carrying the GG genotype. Further analyses of clinical datasets from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) showed that LINC00673 expressions were upregulated in HCC tissues compared to normal tissues, and were correlated with advanced clinical stages and poorer prognoses. In conclusions, our results suggested that the LINC00673 rs9914618 polymorphism may be a promising HCC biomarker, especially in elderly populations.

RESUMEN

To date, all efficient host materials reported for phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs) are constructed with heteroatoms, which have a crucial role in the device performance. However, it has been shown in recent years that the heteroatoms not only increase the design complexity but can also be involved in the instability of the PhOLED, which is nowadays the most important obstacle to overcome. Herein, we design pure aromatic hydrocarbon materials (PHC) as very efficient hosts in high-performance white and blue PhOLEDs. With EQE of 27.7 %, the PHC-based white PhOLEDs display similar efficiency as the best reported with heteroatom-based hosts. Incorporated as a host in a blue PhOLED, which are still the weakest links of the technology, a very high EQE of 25.6 % is reached, surpassing, for the first time, the barrier of 25 % for a PHC and FIrpic blue emitter. This performance shows that the PHC strategy represents an effective alternative for the future development of the OLED industry.

RESUMEN

A Gram-stain-negative, light yellow pigmented, non-motile and aerobic bacterial strain, designated HHU E2-1 T, was isolated from a surface seawater sample. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that HHU E2-1 T shared the highest sequence similarity to the type strain Qipengyuania gaetbuli DSM 16225 T (96.90%), which belongs to the family Erythrobacteraceae. Combined phylogeny of 288 single-copy orthologous gene clusters, analysis of average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), average amino acid identity (AAI) and evolutionary distances suggested that HHU E2-1 T can be considered as a member of the genus Altererythrobacter based on the recently proposed standard for defining genera of Erythrobacteraceae. Strain HHU E2-1 T grew at 15-35 °C and pH 5.0-8.0, with optimum growth at 28 °C and pH 7.0. Tolerance to NaCl was up to 4% (w/v) with optimum growth in 2-3% NaCl. The major fatty acids (> 10%) were C18:1ω7c11-methyl, summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c), and summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c and/or C18:1ω6c). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10. The genomic G + C content was 57.40%. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characterizations, HHU E2-1 T represents a novel species of the genus Altererythrobacter, for which the name Altererythrobacter flava sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HHU E2-1 T (= CGMCC 1.17394 T = KCTC 72835 T = MCCC 1K04226T).

RESUMEN

Successful implantation requires endometrial receptivity. To investigate the mechanisms of miR-494-3p on endometrial receptivity, GnRHa's superovulation scheme was designed to reduce endometrial receptivity, and the pregnant mice were injected with miR-494-3p antagomir. The regulatory role of miR-494-3p was identified by RT-qPCR, uterine blastocyst count, scanning electron microscopy, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and Western blot. Results indicated that miR-494-3p antagomir increased uterine blastocysts numbers, promoted the pinocytosis expressions, and increased endometrial thickness. Besides, miR-494-3p antagomir significantly increased leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), Ang-2 and VEGF protein expressions, and up-regulated p-AKT/AKT and p-mTOR/mTOR protein ratios in endometrium. Luciferase assay confirmed that LIF was a potential target of miR-494-3p. Subsequently, human endometrial epithelial cells (hEECs) were transfected with miR-494-3p inhibitor and PI3K inhibitor (LY294002). The role of miR-494-3p was identified by RT-qPCR, CCK-8 assay, transwell assay and flow cytometry. Results indicated that miR-494-3p inhibitor significantly increased proliferation and invasion, and significantly inhibited apoptosis in hEECs, while LY294002 reversed its biological function. Overall, these results suggested that miR-494-3p is the key regulator of endometrial receptivity in mice, regulating this complex process through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Understanding the role of miR-494-3p in endometrial receptivity is of great significance for exploring new targets for the diagnosis and treatment of early pregnancy failure, and improving the success rates of artificial reproduction.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The increasing number of deaths due to road traffic accidents (RTAs) has attracted global attention. However, the influence of road types is rarely considered in the study of RTAs. This study evaluates the influence of different road types in RTAs in northern Guizhou to provide a basis for the formulation of evidence-based policies and measures. METHODS: We obtained the data from the Zunyi Traffic Management Data Platform for the years 2009-2018. The mortality rates of RTAs were calculated. Descriptive methods and Chi-square tests were used to analyze the characteristics of road traffic collisions on different road types. We also examined the associations between the mortality rate per 10,000 vehicles and the growth of per capital gross domestic product (GDP) with Spearman's rank correlation analysis. According to the passing volume and the infrastructure, we defined different types of roads, like administrative road, functional road, general urban road and urban expressway. RESULTS: In 2012, the traffic mortality rate of administrative roads was 8.9 per 100,000 people, and the mortality rate of functional roads was 7.4 per 100,000 people, which decreased in 2018 to 6.1 deaths per 100,000 people and 5.2 deaths per 100,000 people, respectively. The mortality rate per 10,000 vehicles reached the highest level in 2011 (28.8 per 10,000 vehicles and 22.5 per 10,000 vehicles on administrative and functional roads, respectively). The death rate of county roads was the highest among administrative roads (χ2 = 17.389, p < 0.05) and that of fourth-class roads was the highest among functional roads (χ2 = 21.785, p < 0.05). The mortality rate per 10,000 vehicles was negatively correlated with per capital GDP. CONCLUSION: Although our research shows that RTAs in northern Guizhou have steadily declined in recent years, the range of decline is relatively small. Many measures and sustainable efforts are needed to control road traffic death and accelerate the progress in road traffic safety in northern Guizhou.

RESUMEN

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to solar fuels and/or fine chemicals is a promising way to increase the energy supply and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the conventional reaction system for CO2 photoreduction with pure H2 O or sacrificial agents usually suffers from low catalytic efficiency, poor stability, or cost-ineffective atom economy. A recent surge of developments, in which photocatalytic CO2 valorization is integrated with selective organic synthesis into one reaction system, indicates an efficient modus operandi that enables sufficient utilization of photogenerated electrons and holes to achieve the goals for sustainable economic and social development. In this Review we discuss current advances in cooperative photoredox reaction systems that integrate CO2 valorization with organics upgrading based on heterogeneous photocatalysis. The applications and virtues of this strategy and the underlying reaction mechanisms are discussed. The ongoing challenges and prospects in this area are critically discussed.

RESUMEN

On the basis of the pyridazinone scaffold and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism, we designed a smart nitric oxide (NO) probe, PYSNO, with high sensitivity and selectivity. PYSNO exhibited a rapid response to both exogenous and endogenous NO. This probe can also be used in tracking and investigating NO generation in animal tissue. In the myocardial fibrosis model for mice, PYSNO exhibited a powerful imaging property in vivo as a result of unravelling the progressive relationship between the generation of myocardial NO and the occurrence of myocardial fibrosis.

RESUMEN

The dynamic cell-cell communication is essential for tissue homeostasis in normal physiological circumstances and contributes to a diversified tumor microenvironment. Although exosomes are extracellular vesicles that actively participate in cell-cell interaction by shutting cellular components, impacts of tumor exosomes in the context of cancer stemness remain elusive. Here, we expand colorectal cancer stem cells (CRCSCs) as cancer spheroids and demonstrate that the ß-catenin/Tcf-4-activated RAB27B expression is required for the secretion of CRCSC exosomes. In an exosomal RNA sequencing analysis, a switch of exosomal RNA species from retrotransposons to microRNAs (miRNAs) is identified upon expanding CRCSCs. miRNA-146a-5p (miR-146a) is the major miRNA in CRCSC exosomes and exosomal miR-146a promotes stem-like properties and tumorigenicity by targeting Numb in recipient CRC cells. Among 53 CRC patients, those with abundant exosomal miR-146a expression in serum exhibits higher miR-146aHigh /NumbLow CRCSC traits, an increased number of tumor-filtrating CD66(+) neutrophils and a decreased number of tumor-infiltrating CD8(+) T cells. Our study elucidates a unique mechanism of tumor exosome-mediated stemness expansion.

RESUMEN

Carbazole is a classic tricyclic aromatic compound that has been widely used in organic optoelectronics. Appropriate functionalization on its aromatic rings will significantly increase the possibilities for its application as an optoelectronic material. Position engineering of carbazole not only leads to its structural diversity, but also substantially enriches its functionality. Bicarbazoles have 15 isomers, most of which are well studied and have been applied in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, one isomer, 9,9'-bicarbazole, is rarely investigated as an OLED material. Therefore, two 9,9'-bicarbazole derivatives, 3,3'-di(10H-phenoxazin-10-yl)-9,9'-bicarbazole and 3,3'-di(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)-9,9'-bicarbazole, have been designed and prepared for use as host materials for green and red OLEDs. These two compounds demonstrated good device performances, and it is believed that the 9,9'-bicarbazole building block could be a novel platform for the design of efficient host materials for OLEDs.

RESUMEN

The study introduced a homogeneous orthogonal diffusion model to describe the diffusion pattern of agents in the rat brain. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed post-injection of paramagnetic drugs into the caudatum of the rat brain at predetermined time intervals. The signal intensity on magnetic resonance images was converted to agents' concentration, and the standard least square method was employed to estimate the diffusion coefficients. The diffusion coefficients calculated along the three orthogonal axes were D1  = (0.0097 ± 0.0036) mm2 /h, D2  = (0.0153 ± 0.0033) mm2 /h, and D3  = (0.0293 ± 0.0155) mm2 /h; the clearance rate constant was k = (0.2177 ± 0.0112)/h. The theoretical homogeneous orthogonal model can enhance our knowledge on both the biophysical characteristics of brain extracellular space and the interstitial drug delivery in the brain.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Surgical instrument processing is important for improving the safety of surgical care in hospitals. However, it has been rarely studied to date. Errors in surgical instrument processing may increase operative times and costs, and increase the risk of surgical infections and perioperative morbidity. We aimed to investigate the errors occurred in packaging surgical instruments. METHODS: Surgical instrument tracking system in a central sterile supply department (CSSD) was used to collect the packaging data during January-August 2016 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou City, China. RESULTS: Data on 33,839 surgical instrument packages were collected. A total of 398 (1.18%) errors occurred, including incomplete packages (n = 70), instrument missing (n = 77), instrument malfunction (n = 27), instrument in wrong specification (n = 175), wrong packaging tag (n = 8), box and cover mismatched (n = 14), wrong packing material (n = 15), indicator card missing (n = 6), and wrong count of instruments (n = 6). The highest error rates were observed among least experienced nurses (N1 level) and during the 16:00-20:00 time period (both p < 0.05). A relatively high error rate was detected in the Department of Orthopedics as well as in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. CONCLUSION: Wrong instrument specifications were the primary packing error identified in the current study. Further effort is needed to standardize the packing procedure for instruments under the same category and more effort is required to reduce the error rate during high risk times, or in the surgery department.

RESUMEN

The efficiency of solar hydrogen evolution closely depends on the multiple electrons accumulation on the catalytic center for two-electron-involved water reduction. Herein, we report an effective approach to enable broadband light absorption and unidirectional electron flow for efficiently accumulating electrons at active sites for hydrogen evolution by rationally engineering the nanostructure of Pt nanoparticles (NPs), TiO2 , and SiO2 support. In addition to Schottky-junction-driven electron transfer from TiO2 to Pt, Pt NPs also produce hot electrons by recycling the scattered visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) light of the support. Unidirectional electron flow to active sites is realized by tuning the components spatial distribution. These features collectively accumulate multiple electrons at catalytic Pt sites, thereby affording enhanced activity toward hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of total calcium and its corrected value for predicting critically high and critically low ionized calcium in critical illness is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the concentration of total serum calcium, either corrected for albumin or not, could predict critically high or low values in critical illness. METHODS: This report describes a retrospective study using the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC) III database. Test panels that contained serum albumin, total calcium, and ionized calcium (named ATI panels) with order time intervals of less than one hour were extracted. The predictive accuracy of total calcium, either corrected for albumin or not, was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: A total of 12 118 ATIs with 103 critically low and 92 critically high ionized calcium results were extracted. The areas under ROC curves (AUCs) of corrected and uncorrected total calcium for predicting critically low ionized calcium were 0.69 (95% CI: 0.61-0.76) and 0.70 (95% CI: 0.63-0.78), respectively. For predicting critically high ionized calcium, the AUCs were 0.98 (95% CI: 0.97-1.00) and 0.97 (95% CI: 0.95-1.00), respectively. With positive predictive values (PPVs) of 0.05 and 0.10, the sensitivities (both corrected and uncorrected) were approximately 0.50 for predicting critically low ionized calcium and 0.95 for predicting critically high ionized calcium. CONCLUSIONS: Total calcium, either corrected for albumin or not, is not a reliable test to predict critically low ionized calcium in critical illness. Total calcium's predictive accuracy for critically high ionized calcium is high.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicated that both red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were useful indices in assessing the disease activity of autoimmune diseases. However, the evidence for the association between RDW, NLR and dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) is limited. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between the disease activity of PM/DM and both RDW and NLR. METHODS: Medical records of 114 PM/DM patients and 114 healthy controls were retrospectively reviewed, and their RDW, NLR and myositis disease activity assessment visual analogue scale (MYOACT) on admission were extracted. The correlations between RDW, NLR and MYOACT were analyzed using the Spearman approach and multivariable model. RESULTS: PM/DM patients had significantly higher RDW and NLR. Increased RDW in PM/DM patients was not completely attributed to decreased hemoglobin or therapeutic agents. Both RDW and NLR are independently and positively correlated MYOACT. CONCLUSION: Both RDW and NLR are useful indices in assessing the disease activity of PM/DM.
