RESUMEN

A single-layer graphene metamaterial consisting of a horizontal graphene strip, four vertical graphene strips, and two graphene rings is proposed to realize tunable multi-plasma-induced transparency (MPIT) by the coupled mode theory and the finite-difference time-domain method. A switch with three modulation modes is realized by dynamically adjusting the Fermi level of graphene. Moreover, the effect of symmetry breaking on MPIT is investigated by controlling the geometric parameters of graphene metamaterials. Triple-PIT, dual-PIT, single-PIT can be transformed into each other. The proposed structure and results provide guidance for applications such as designing photoelectric switches and modulators.

RESUMEN

This paper proposes a novel and perfect absorber based on patterned graphene and vanadium dioxide hybrid metamaterial, which can not only achieve wide-band perfect absorption and dual-channel absorption in the terahertz band, but also realize their conversion by adjusting the temperature to control the metallic or insulating phase of VO2. Firstly, the absorption spectrum of the proposed structure is analyzed without graphene, where the absorption can reach as high as 100% at one frequency point (f = 5.956 THz) when VO2 is in the metal phase. What merits attention is that the addition of graphene above the structure enhances the almost 100% absorption from one frequency point (f = 5.956 THz) to a wide frequency band, in which the broadband width records 1.683 THz. Secondly, when VO2 is the insulating phase, the absorption of the metamaterial structure with graphene outperforms better, and two high absorption peaks are formed, logging 100% and 90.7% at f3 = 5.545 THz and f4 = 7.684 THz, respectively. Lastly, the adjustment of the Fermi level of graphene from 0.8 eV to 1.1 eV incurs an obvious blueshift of the absorption spectra, where an asynchronous optical switch can be achieved at fK1 = 5.782 THz and fK2 = 6.898 THz. Besides, the absorber exhibits polarization sensitivity at f3 = 5.545 THz, and polarization insensitivity at f4 = 7.684 THz with the shift in the polarization angle of incident light from 0° to 90°. Accordingly, this paper gives insights into the new method that increases the high absorption width, as well as the great potential in the multifunctional modulator.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) has become a hot topic in the field of physiological pacing. However, only a few studies have described the characteristics of the intrinsic intracardiac electrogram (EGM) while placing the left bundle branch (LBB) lead. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we reported a case with atrial premature contractions to the ventricle during the LBBP procedure. Paced and intrinsic (supraventricular) EGMs were recorded and analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: The myocardium of the interventricular septum could be divided into four regions based on electrophysiology: the right septal area, the left septal area, the endocardium of the left ventricular septum, and the LBB area. This might guide the electrophysiological localization of the LBB lead in the septum.

RESUMEN

A terahertz-band metamaterial composed of multilayer patterned graphene is proposed and triple plasmon-induced transparency is excited by coupling three bright modes with one dark mode. The Lorentz curve calculated by the coupled-mode theory agrees well with the finite-difference time-domain results. Dynamic tuning is investigated by changing the Fermi level. Multimode electro-optics switching can be designed and achieved, and the amplitude modulations of four resonance frequencies are 94.3%, 92.8%, 90.7%, and 93%, respectively, which can realize the design of synchronous and asynchronous electro-optics switches. It is hoped that these results can provide theoretical support and guidance for the future design and application of photonic and optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

A simple monolayer graphene metamaterial based on silicon/silica substrates is proposed, and typical triple-plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) is realized in the terahertz band. The physical mechanism is analyzed by coupled mode theory (CMT), and the results of CMT agree well with the finite-difference time-domain simulation. A multimode electro-optical switch can be designed by dynamic tuning, and the modulation degrees of its resonant frequencies are 84.0%, 87.3%, 83.0%, 88.1%, and 76.7%. In addition, triple-PIT gradually degenerates into dual-PIT with a decrease in the length of one bright mode. Interestingly, the group index can reach 770 at Ef=0.8eV, which shows that it can be designed as a slow light device with extraordinary ability. Therefore, the results of this paper are of great significance to the research and design of electro-optical switches and slow light devices in the terahertz band.

RESUMEN

It was shown that V6 R-wave peak time (V6 RWPT) prolongs with transition form non-selective left bundle branch pacing (ns-LBBP) to left ventricular septal pacing (LVSP) but remains constant or slightly prolongs with transition to selective left bundle branch pacing (sel-LBBP) [1,2]. Here, we report on a patient who was observed with a LBB potential, isoelectric interval, where the V6 RWPT substantially prolonged with transition from ns-LBBP to sel-LBBP at near threshold output.

RESUMEN

This study proposes a graphene metamaterial desensitized to the polarized angle to produce tunable quadruple plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). As a tool employed to explain the PIT, n-order coupled mode theory (CMT) is deduced for the first time and closely agrees with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations according to the quadruple PIT results in the case of n = 5. Additionally, the response of the proposed structure to the angle of polarized light is investigated. As a result, the Boltzmann function satisfied by the response of graphene strips to the polarization direction of incident light is proposed for the first time. Its property of polarization desensitization can be attributed to structural centrosymmetry, and conjugated variety which the Boltzmann functions result in. Therefore, a quintuple-mode modulation based on simultaneous electro-optical switch is realized by tuning Fermi levels within graphene. Its modulation degrees of amplitude and dephasing times are obtained. Given that the slow-light property is an important application of PIT, the n-order group index is thereby obtained. Hence, not only do the insights gained into polarization-desensitization structure provide new ideas for the design of novel optoelectronic devices, but also the results from the n-order CMT offer new research progress and references in theory.

RESUMEN

A mono-layer metamaterial comprising four graphene-strips and one graphene-square-ring is proposed herein to realize triple plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). Theoretical results based on the coupled mode theory (CMT) are in agreement with the simulation results obtained using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). An optical switch is investigated based on the characteristics of graphene dynamic modulation, with modulation degrees of the amplitude of 90.1%, 80.1%, 94.5%, and 84.7% corresponding to 1.905 THz, 2.455 THz, 3.131 THz, and 4.923 THz, respectively. Moreover, the proposed metamaterial is insensitive to the change in the angle of polarized light, for which the triple-PIT is equivalent in the cases of both x- and y-polarized light. The optical switch based on the proposed structure is effective not only for the linearly polarized light in different directions but also for left circularly polarized and right circularly polarized light. As such, this work provides insight into the design of optoelectronic devices based on the polarization characteristics of the incident light field on the optical switch and PIT.

RESUMEN

In this study, multilayer graphene metamaterials comprising graphene blocks and graphene ribbon are proposed to realize dynamic plasmon-induced transparence (PIT). By changing the position between the graphene blocks, PIT phenomenon will occur in different terahertz bands. Furthermore, PIT with a transparent window width of 1 THz has been realized. In addition, the PIT shows redshifts or blueshifts or disappears altogether upon changing the Fermi level of graphene, and hence a frequency selector from 3.91 to 7.84 THz and an electro-optical switch can be realized. Surprisingly, the group index of this structure can be increased to 469. Compared with the complex and fixed structure of previous studies, our proposed structure is simple and can be dynamically adjusted according to demands, which makes it a valuable platform for ideas to inspire the design of novel electro-optic devices.

RESUMEN

Background: Cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure (HF), and stroke have been linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, previous studies have reported inconsistent results. The study aimed to investigate the association between CHD, HF, and the risk of AD using a meta-analysis. Methods: STATA 12.0 software is used to compute odds ratios (ORs)/relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between CHD, HF, and the risk of AD. Results: A total of 12 studies (including N = 36,913 individuals with AD and N = 1,701,718 participants) investigated the association between CHD and the risk of AD. Meta-analysis indicated that CHD was associated with an increased risk of AD with a random effects model (OR/RR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.00-1.48, I2 = 97.2%, P < 0.001). Additionally, seven studies (including N = 5,119 individuals with AD and N = 1,231,399 participants) investigated the association between myocardial infarction (MI) and the risk of AD. Our meta-analysis demonstrated no significant association between MI and the risk of AD with a fixed effects model (RR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.91-1.30, I2 = 42.8%, P = 0.105). Finally, six studies (including N = 83,065 individuals with AD and N = 2,414,963 participants) examined the association between HF and the risk of AD. Our meta-analysis revealed that HF was associated with an increased risk of AD using a random effects model (RR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.05-2.24, I2 = 96.8%, P < 0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, our meta-analysis suggests that CHD and HF are associated with an increased risk of developing AD. Nonetheless, more large-scale prospective studies are necessary to further investigate the associations between CHD, HF, and the risk of AD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) is a promising approach for achieving near-physiologic pacing. However, differentiating LBBP from left ventricular septal endocardial pacing (LVS(e)P) remains a challenge. This study aimed to establish a simple and effective method for differentiating LBBP from LVS(e)P and to evaluate their electrophysiologic characteristics. METHODS: LBBP, using continuous uninterrupted pacing and real-time monitoring of electrocardiograms along with intracardiac electrograms, was performed in 97 consecutive patients. We evaluated the electrophysiologic characteristics observed during LBBP using 6 modalities: right ventricular septal pacing (RVSP), intraventricular septal pacing (IVSP 1 and 2), LVS(e)P, nonselective LBBP (NSLBBP), and selective LBBP (SLBBP). RESULTS: Of the 97 patients, 87 (89.7%) met the criteria (abrupt change in paced QRS morphology with a transition from Qr to QR/qR in lead V1 and shortening of stimulus to V6 R-wave peak time [Stim-V6RWPT] of ≥ 10 ms with constant output while rather than after lead screwing) for nonselective left bundle branch (LBB) capture. Selective LBB capture was observed in 82 patients (84.5%). The Stim-V6RWPT of NSLBBP and SLBBP were significantly shorter than LVS(e)P (respectively, 67.1 ± 8.7 ms, 67.0 ± 9.3 ms, and 82.1 ± 10.9 ms). Stim-QRSend was the narrowest in IVSP2 (136.6 ± 15.2 ms) instead of NSLBBP (140.0 ± 17.1 ms). CONCLUSIONS: The uninterrupted pacing technique for differentiating LBBP from LVS(e)P in the same group of patients is feasible. Electrophysiologic evidence from our intrapatient-controlled study shows that LBBP and LVS(e)P differ in ventricular electrical synchronization.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: It was recently shown that template beats and fixation beats of the premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) were generated during lead deployment. These could be exploited to guide the left bundle branch (LBB) pacing (LBBP) procedure. However, lack of a revolving connector that can continuously record and pace during lead rotations has been a limitation when using the traditional implant technique. Here, we report ten cases in which a revolving connector was used and showed that the premature beats of selective left bundle branch (SLBB-PBs) were generated as the lead was reached and the electrical stimulus selectively captured the LBB. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ten patients who underwent the transseptal placement of the pacing lead using a revolving connector were included in the study. We aimed to examine whether the SLBB-PB was a marker of LBB capture during LBBP and the clinical significance of SLBB-PB. LBBP was performed and data of these cases were analyzed to show the characteristics of the electrocardiogram and the intracardiac electrogram of SLBB-PBs. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first case series on SLBB-PBs in LBBP. The presence of SLBB-PBs suggested that the LBB was reached and selectively captured and possibly increased the safety of lead implantation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Left bundle branch pacing is a physiological pacing modality with a low and stable threshold. The electrophysiological characteristics and mechanisms of bipolar pacing remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the electrophysiological characteristics of bipolar pacing of left bundle branch pacing and to infer the mechanisms underlying each electrocardiogram and electrogram waveform morphology. METHODS: A total of 65 patients who strictly met the criteria for left bundle branch capture were enrolled. The changes in the morphology of the electrocardiogram and electrogram during the threshold testing with different outputs on unipolar and bipolar pacing were recorded. The electrophysiological characteristics were then analyzed. RESULTS: Four distinct morphologies and 3 different types of transitions during bipolar pacing threshold testing were identified; we labeled the 4 types of morphologies as nonselective (NS)-bipolar-left bundle (LB), NS-cathodal-LB, selective (S)-cathodal-LB, and left ventricular septal-cathodal. Except left ventricular septal-cathodal, the other 3 types (NS-bipolar-LB, NS-cathodal-LB, and S-cathodal-L) had a short and constant V6 R-wave peak time (RWPT) (64.8 ± 7.7 ms vs 65.7 ± 7.8 ms vs 65.7 ± 7.3 ms). The paced QRS (P-QRS) complex was the narrowest in NS-bipolar-LB rather than in NS-cathodal-LB (118.2 ± 14.2 ms vs 133.8 ± 15.8 ms; P < .001). NS-bipolar-LB had a higher threshold than did NS-cathodal-LB (2.5 ± 1.2 V vs 0.8 ± 0.4 V; P < .001). CONCLUSION: With a higher output on bipolar pacing, NS-bipolar-LB capture had the shortest V6 RWPT, V1 RWPT, and P-QRS. S-cathodal-LB capture had the longest V1 RWPT and P-QRS complex.

RESUMEN

Double narrowband induced perfect absorption in the terahertz region is achieved in a graphene-dielectric-gold hybrid metamaterial, whose physical mechanism is analyzed using the coupled-mode theory (CMT), which agreed well with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. This study found that the Fermi level of graphene can be adjusted to improve the absorptivity when the refractive index (RI) nd of the chosen dielectric cannot achieve a good absorption effect. In addition, the blue shift of absorption spectrum can be used in the design of dual-frequency electro-optical switches, of which the modulation degree of amplitude (MDA) can reach as high as 94.05% and 93.41%, indicating that this is a very promising electro-optical switch. Most significantly, the RI sensing performance is investigated, which shows an ultra-high absorption sensitivity SA = 4.4°/RIU, wavelength sensitivity Sλ = 9.8°/RIU, and phase shift sensitivity Sφ = 2691°/RIU. At last, an interesting finding is that the two peaks (R1 and R2) of plasmon-induced absorption (PIA) show different polarization characteristics (insensitive or sensitive) to the incident light angle; this polarization-sensitive is particularly important for the PIT/PIA-based optical polarizers. Undoubtedly, this paper is of great significance to the research and design of terahertz photonic devices and sensors.

RESUMEN

Objective: The characteristics of discrete intracardiac electrogram (EGM) in selective left bundle branch (SLBB) pacing (SLBBP) have not been described in detail previously. This study aimed to examine the effect of different high-pass filter (HPF) settings on discrete local ventricular components in an intracardiac EGM and to analyze its possible mechanisms. Methods: This study included 144 patients with indications of permanent cardiac pacing. EGMs were collected at four different HPF settings (30, 60, 100, and 200 Hz) with a low-pass filter at 500 Hz, and their possible mechanisms were analyzed. Results: LBBP was successfully achieved in 91.0% (131/144) of patients. SLBBP was achieved in 123 patients. The occurrence rates of discrete local ventricular EGM were 16.7, 33.3, 72.9, and 85.4% for HPF settings of 30, 60, 100, and 200 Hz, respectively. The analysis of discrete EGM detection showed significant differences between the different HPF settings. By using the discrete local ventricular component and isoelectric interval as the SLBB capture golden standard, the results of EGMs revealed that the 30 Hz HPF has a sensitivity of 19% and specificity of 100%. The 60 Hz HPF had a sensitivity of 39% and a specificity of 100%. The 100 Hz HPF had a sensitivity of 85% and a specificity of 100%. The 200 Hz HPF had a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 100%. Conclusion: An optimal HPF setting of 200 Hz is recommended for discrete local ventricular EGM detection. A discrete local ventricular EGM should exhibit an isoelectric interval. A steep deflection and high-frequency ventricular EGM morphology nearly identify an intrinsic EGM morphology.

RESUMEN

Increasing evidence reveals a close relationship between deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) and cancer progression. In this study, we attempted to identify the roles and mechanisms of critical DUBs in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods: Bioinformatics analysis was performed to screen differentially expressed novel DUBs in HNSCC. Immunohistochemistry assay was used to measure the expression of DUB PSMD14 in HNSCC specimens and adjacent normal tissues. The level of PSMD14 in HNSCC tumorigenesis was investigated using a 4-NQO-induced murine HNSCC model. The function of PSMD14 was determined through loss-of-function assays. Chromatin immunoprecipitation, immunoprecipitation and in vivo ubiquitination assay were conducted to explore the potential mechanism of PSMD14. The anti-tumor activity of PSMD14 inhibitor Thiolutin was assessed by in vitro and in vivo experiments. Results: We identified PSMD14 as one of significantly upregulated DUBs in HNSCC tissues. Aberrant expression of PSMD14 was associated with tumorigenesis and malignant progression of HNSCC and further indicated poor prognosis. The results of in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated PSMD14 depletion significantly undermined HNSCC growth, chemoresistance and stemness. Mechanically, PSMD14 inhibited the ubiquitination and degradation of E2F1 to improve the activation of Akt pathway and the transcription of SOX2. Furthermore, PSMD14 inhibitor Thiolutin exhibited a potent anti-tumor effect on HNSCC in vivo and in vitro by impairing DUB activity of PSMD14. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate the role and mechanism of PSMD14 in HNSCC, and provide a novel and promising target for diagnosis and clinical therapy of HNSCC.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate N-RAS expression in patients with salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) and to analyze its association with clinicopathologic features and prognosis. STUDY DESIGN: We determined N-RAS expression in SACC tumors via immunohistochemistry and evaluated the association between N-RAS expression and clinicopathologic variables. The disease-free survival (DFS) curves were plotted by using the Kaplan-Meier method. The parameters of prognostic significance found by univariate analysis were tested by a multivariate Cox regression model. RESULTS: N-RAS expression was detected in 61 of 72 SACC tumor samples (84.7%). In univariate analyses, N-RAS expression was associated with clinical stage, tumor size, adjacent tissue invasion, and distant metastasis. N-RAS expression was associated with DFS in univariate analysis; however, in multivariate analysis, N-RAS was not an independent prognostic indicator, but clinical stage (0.04) and histologic subtype (0.02) were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that N-RAS was overexpressed in SACC tissues, but was not an independent prognostic indicator of DFS. Only clinical stage and histologic subtype were prognostic indicators of DFS.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: miR-98, a member of the let-7 family of microRNAs, is downregulated in many malignant tumors and has been correlated with tumor progression. However, the roles of miR-98 in salivary adenoid cystic carcinomas (SACCs) are still unclear. Thus, we explored the role of miR-98 in the pathogenesis of SACCs. METHODS: Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to quantify miR-98 expression in SACC cell lines as well as in the primary tumors and adjacent tissues. Target gene prediction was carried out using softwares such as miRanda, PicTar, and TargetScan, and the neuroblastoma RAS viral oncogene homologue (N-RAS) was chosen as a potential target gene. Subsequently, the regulatory role of miR-98 on N-RAS expression was examined by Western blotting and immunofluorescence assays. N-RAS expression was detected in SACC tissues and SACC cell lines using immunohistochemistry and Western blot, respectively. Furthermore, the associations between N-RAS expression and clinicopathological features were analyzed. Finally, the effects of miR-98 on the proliferation and metastasis of SACC cell lines were determined. RESULTS: miR-98 was downregulated in primary tissues and ACC-M cells. Meanwhile, N-RAS expression was significantly higher in SACC tissues than that in the adjacent tissues, and its overexpression was significantly associated with the clinical stage and tumor size. In addition, the overexpression of miR-98 in ACC-M cells inhibited cell proliferation, invasion, and migration in vitro. It also significantly decreased the expression of N-RAS and inhibited signaling through the PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK pathways. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that miR-98 possibly acts as a tumor suppressor in SACC by negatively regulating the oncogene N-RAS.

RESUMEN

A large portion of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from e-waste released into the coastal areas may be the potential source of PCBs to the global oceans. The paper presents data of PCBs concentrations in fifty surface sediment samples and a dated sediment core in Yangtze River Delta (YRE) and adjacent East China Sea (ECS). The total PCBs levels varied from 5.08 to 19.64 ng/g dry weight, with the highest concentrations situate within the river-sea boundary zone which is so-called "marginal filter". Concurrent with the operation of e-waste recycling over the last two decades, PCB fluxes started to rise again after 1980s and reached a maximum in this century. The full data set was used to estimate the burden of PCBs in YRE and adjacent ECS. A total sediment burdens were 192.8 tons, with the spatial density of 364 ng/cm(2) which accounts for 1.9% of all the PCBs in China.
