The adaptive nature of biological motion perception has been documented in behavioral studies, with research showing that prolonged viewing of an action can bias judgments of subsequent actions towards the opposite of its attributes. However, the neural mechanisms underlying action adaptation aftereffects remain unknown. We examined adaptation-induced changes in brain responses to an ambiguous action after adapting to walking or running actions within two bilateral regions of interest: 1) human middle temporal area (hMT+), a lower-level motion-sensitive region of cortex, and 2) posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), a higher-level action-selective area. We found a significant correlation between neural adaptation strength in right pSTS and perceptual aftereffects to biological motion measured behaviorally, but not in hMT+. The magnitude of neural adaptation in right pSTS was also strongly correlated with individual differences in the degree of autistic traits. Participants with more autistic traits exhibited less adaptation-induced modulations of brain responses in right pSTS and correspondingly weaker perceptual aftereffects. These results suggest a direct link between perceptual aftereffects and adaptation of neural populations in right pSTS after prolonged viewing of a biological motion stimulus, and highlight the potential importance of this brain region for understanding differences in social-cognitive processing along the autistic spectrum.

Action categorization is necessary for human cognition and is foundational to learning verbs, which label categories of actions and events. In two studies using a nonlinguistic preferential looking paradigm, 10- to 12-month-old English-learning infants were tested on their ability to discriminate and categorize a dynamic human manner of motion (i.e., way in which a figure moves; e.g., marching). Study 1 results reveal that infants can discriminate a change in path and actor across instances of the same manner of motion. Study 2 results suggest that infants categorize the manner of motion for dynamic human events even under conditions in which other components of the event change, including the actor's path and the actor. Together, these two studies extend prior research on infant action categorization of animated motion events by providing evidence that infants can categorize dynamic human actions, a skill foundational to the learning of motion verbs.

Understanding what others are doing is an essential aspect of social cognition that depends on our ability to quickly recognize and categorize their actions. To effectively study action recognition we need to understand how actions are bounded, where they start and where they end. Here we borrow a conceptual approach - the notion of 'canonicality' - introduced by Palmer and colleagues in their study of object recognition and apply it to the study of action recognition. Using a set of 50 video clips sourced from stock photography sites, we show that many everyday actions - transitive and intransitive, social and non-social, communicative - are characterized by 'canonical moments' in a sequence of movements that are agreed by participants to 'best represent' a named action, as indicated in a forced choice (Exp 1, n = 142) and a free choice (Exp 2, n = 125) paradigm. In Exp 3 (n = 102) we confirm that canonical moments from action sequences are more readily named as depicting specific actions and, mirroring research in object recognition, that such canonical moments are privileged in memory (Exp 4, n = 95). We suggest that 'canonical moments', being those that convey maximal information about human actions, are integral to the representation of human action.1.

To investigate the processing of environmental sounds, previous researchers have compared the semantic processing of words and sounds, yielding mixed results. This study aimed to specifically investigate the electrophysiological mechanism underlying the semantic processing of environmental sounds presented in a naturalistic visual scene. We recorded event-related brain potentials in a group of young adults over the presentation of everyday life actions that were either congruent or incongruent with environmental sounds. Our results showed that incongruent environmental sounds evoked both a P400 and an N400 effect, reflecting sensitivity to physical and semantic violations of environmental sounds' properties, respectively. In addition, our findings showed an enhanced late positivity in response to incongruous environmental sounds, probably reflecting additional reanalysis costs. In conclusion, these results indicate that the crossmodal processing of the environmental sounds might require the simultaneous involvement of different cognitive processes.

Sustainability is a key challenge for humanity in the context of complex and unprecedented global changes. Future Earth, an international research initiative aiming to advance global sustainability science, has recently launched knowledge-action networks (KANs) as mechanisms for delivering its research strategy. The research initiative is currently developing a KAN on "natural assets" to facilitate and enable action-oriented research and synthesis towards natural assets sustainability. 'Natural assets' has been adopted by Future Earth as an umbrella term aiming to translate and bridge across different knowledge systems and different perspectives on peoples' relationships with nature. In this paper, we clarify the framing of Future Earth around natural assets emphasizing the recognition on pluralism and identifying the challenges of translating different visions about the role of natural assets, including via policy formulation, for local to global sustainability challenges. This understanding will be useful to develop inter-and transdisciplinary solutions for human-environmental problems by (i) embracing richer collaborative decision processes and building bridges across different perspectives; (ii) giving emphasis on the interactions between biophysical and socioeconomic drivers affecting the future trends of investments and disinvestments in natural assets; and (iii) focusing on social equity, power relationships for effective application of the natural assets approach. This understanding also intends to inform the scope of the natural asset KAN's research agenda to mobilize the translation of research into co-designed action for sustainability.

No município de Manaus, a intensificação do processo migratório, aliada a precária vigilância epidemiológica e entomológica, resultou na reintrodução da transmissão de malária no perímetro urbano, zona Leste, em julho de 1988, após 13 anos sem registro de autoctonia. Este estudo descreve sobre a situação epidemiológica da malária e áreas que sofreram ações antrópicas (desmatamento, assentamentos humanos, atividades de piscicultura, etc.) em Manaus, no período entre 1986 e 2005. Nesse Município, o incremento populacional em 2005 atingiu 105,2 por cento, em relação a 1986, resultado de ocupação dos espaços (invasões e conjuntos habitacionais). A partir de 2003, a doença teve incremento acima 2.000 por cento em relação a 1986. Nessas áreas ocorreu aumento da incidência da doença. O índice parasitário anual no Município oscilou de baixo a médio risco, e entre as zonas urbanas, variou de sem risco a alto risco. As zonas Leste, Oeste e Norte onde ainda existem áreas com características rurais apresentaram maior receptividade e vulnerabilidade de transmissão.


In the municipality of Manaus, intensification of the migratory process, along with precarious epidemiological and entomological surveillance, resulted in reintroduction of malaria transmission on the urban perimeter (in the eastern zone), in July 1988, after 13 years without any records of autochthonous disease. This study reports on the epidemiological situation relating to malaria and to the areas that were subjected to human actions (deforestation, human settlement, fish-rearing activity, etc) in Manaus, between 1986 and 2005. In this municipality, the population increase from 1986 to 2005 was 105.2 percent. This resulted from occupation of space, in the form of invasions and housing projects. From 2003, the increase in relation to 1986 was more than 2,000 percent. In these areas, there were increases in disease incidence. The annual parasitic index in the municipality ranged from low to medium risk and, between urban zones, it ranged from no risk to high risk. In the eastern, western and northern zones, which still contain areas with agricultural characteristics, there was greater receptivity and vulnerability to transmission.
