BACKGROUND: Lameness examinations are commonly performed in equine medicine. Advancements in digital technology have increased the use of video recordings for lameness assessment, however, standardization of ideal video angle is not available yielding videos of poor diagnostic quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of video angle on the subjective assessment of front limb lameness. A randomized, blinded, crossover study was performed. Six horses with and without mechanically induced forelimb solar pain were recorded using 9 video angles including horses trotting directly away and towards the video camera, horses trotting away and towards a video camera placed to the left and right side of midline, and horses trotting in a circle with the video camera placed on the inside and outside of the circle. Videos were randomized and assessed by three expert equine veterinarians using a 0-5 point scoring system. Objective lameness parameters were collected using a body-mounted inertial sensor system (Lameness Locator®, Equinosis LLC). Interobserver agreement for subjective lameness scores and ease of grading scores were determined. RESULTS: Induction of lameness was successful in all horses. There was excellent agreement between objective lameness parameters and subjective lameness scores (AUC of the ROC = 0.87). For horses in the "lame" trials, interobserver agreement was moderate for video angle 2 when degree of lameness was considered and perfect for video angle 2 and 9 when lameness was considered as a binary outcome. All other angles had no to fair agreement. For horses in the "sound" trials, interobserver agreement was perfect for video angle 5. All other video angles had slight to moderate agreement. CONCLUSIONS: When video assessment of forelimb lameness is required, a video of the horse trotting directly towards the video camera at a minimum is recommended. Other video angles may provide supportive information regarding lameness characteristics.

This study was conducted to evaluate efficacy of ultrasonography (USG) in determining working length in in-vitro conditions. Twenty five access cavities of maxillary incisor teeth were opened and actual working lengths (AWL) were measured with dental operating microscope. The working length were then measured with an electronic apex locator and USG. USG and apex locator measurements were statistically analyzed using one sample t-test and compared with AWL. The mean AWL measurment was 20.68 mm. USG measured the working length slightly longer (21.09 mm) than the measurements of apex locator (20.64 mm). Statistical analysis showed that the USG method provided similar measurements to electronic apex locators and with no statistical difference with actual working length (P < .05). USG emerges as a promising method for working length measurement that allows simultaneous visualization of root tip anatomy in cases where electronic apex locators may be insufficient and there is buccal cortical bone loss.

This study evaluated changes in the root canal length (RCL) and the accuracy of the electronic apex locator (EAL) during the different stages of endodontic treatment and retreatment. Fifty-six mesial root canals of mandibular molars were selected. The actual root canal length (AL) of the canals was obtained by inserting a size 15 hand file up to the apical foramen, under magnification. The electronic lengths were obtained at the "APEX" mark of Root ZX II, using an alginate model. Both measurements were performed at three different stages of the initial root canal treatment-unflared, flared, and concluded-and at two stages of retreatment, after achieving patency and repreparation. Data were statistically analyzed and the significance level established was 5%. All stages produced a significant reduction in the AL (p < 0.05). The greatest variation was observed between the unflared-flared stages (0.2 mm) and between concluded-patency stages (0.09 mm), with no difference between them (p > 0.05). The accuracy of Root ZX II was negatively affected after achieving patency, presenting statistically significant difference compared to the other stages (p < 0.05). A significant reduction in the RCL was observed along the different stages of endodontic treatment and retreatment. The EAL was accurate to measure the root canals in most stages, except after achieving patency for endodontic retreatment. Determining and monitoring the RCL is an essential step towards a favorable prognosis, since it reduced along the different stages evaluated. Root ZX II was not accurate for endodontic retreatment.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the perspectives, preferences, and clinical experiences regarding using electronic apex locator and apex locator integrated instrumentation of dentists and endodontists. METHODS: A web-based questionnaire consisting of 3 parts and 23 closed-ended questions to achieve the objective of the study was carried out in ethical conditions between August and October 2023. The first part of survey included demographic information, while the second part was about evaluating electronic apex locator usage. In the last part, only participants' use of apex locator-integrated instrumentation was evaluated. Data were analyzed at a significance level of p < 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 297 clinicians, including 59 endodontists and 34 endodontic residents/Ph.D. students participated in the questionnaire. Endodontists and endodontic residents/Ph.D. students perform statistically significantly more root canal treatments per week on average (p = 0.001). For the working length determination method (multiple option question), 78.5% of participants use an electronic apex locator and 39.7% apex locator-integrated engines. However, the preference rate for electronic apex determination technique was generally 95.6%, with the full rate confirmation of endodontists and endodontic residents/Ph.D. students (100%). A total of 21 endodontists out of 59 prefer apex locator integrated engine-driven instrumentation. Although many of these specialized clinicians use this technique, they stated that they measure electronic working length passively for confirmation of the working length before (90.5%) and after the preparation (66.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Dentists, as well as endodontists, are skeptical about apex locator-integrated engine-driven instrumentation. Using this technique as a supporter rather than a primary way for preparation within safe limits may give safer results in terms of treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Successful endodontic treatment needs accurate determination of working length (WL). Electronic apex locators (EALs) were presented as an alternative to radiographic methods; and since then, they have evolved and gained popularity in the determination of WL. However, there is insufficient evidence on the post-operative pain, adequacy, and accuracy of EALs in determining WL. OBJECTIVE: The systematic review and meta-analysis aims to gather evidence regarding the effectiveness of EALs for WL determination when compared to different imaging techniques along with postoperative pain associated with WL determination, the number of radiographs taken during the procedure, the time taken, and the adverse effects. METHODS: For the review, clinical studies with cross-over and parallel-arm randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched in seven electronic databases, followed by cross-referencing of the selected studies and related research synthesis. Risk of bias (RoB) assessment was carried out with Cochrane's RoB tool and a random-effects model was used. The meta-analysis was performed with the RevMan software 5.4.1. RESULTS: Eleven eligible RCTs were incorporated into the review and eight RCTs into the meta-analysis, of which five had high RoB and the remaining six had unclear RoB. Following meta-analysis, no significant difference in postoperative pain was found among the EAL and radiograph groups (SMD 0.00, CI .29 to .28, 354 participants; P value = 0.98). Radiograph group showed better WL accuracy (SMD 0.55, CI .11 to .99, 254 participants; P value = 0.02), while the EAL group had 10% better WL adequacy (RR 1.10, CI 1.03-1.18, 573 participants; P value = 0.006). CONCLUSION: We found very low-certainty evidence to support the efficacy of different types of EAL compared to radiography for the outcomes tested. We were unable to reach any conclusions about the superiority of any type of EAL. Well-planned RCTs need to be conducted by standardizing the outcomes and outcome measurement methods.

PURPOSE: To investigate the retentive behavior of the Locator legacy and Novaloc attachment systems with different retention inserts both within and across systems under cyclic load. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three retention inserts of each system (green, yellow, and white for Novaloc; green, orange, and red inserts for extended range for legacy Locator) were tested on abutments of both systems with a sample number of 10 per force and 10,000 cycles of insertion and removal. The loading was applied in the axial direction of the abutments, which were placed in artificial saliva. The retention force was measured in each cycle. The results were compared with the manufacturer's specifications and evaluated for a simulated period of use of 10 years. Characteristic time constants were determined, and subsequently, the two systems were compared regarding their wear behavior. RESULTS: The manufacturer's specifications could only be confirmed for the green Novaloc retention insert on a Novaloc abutment (t-test: p = 0.50); for all other inserts, the baseline exceeded the manufacturer's specifications by 30%-75% (Novaloc; t-test: p < 0.001) and 75%-550% (Locator; t-test: p < 0.001). After 10,000 cycles performed, the manufacturer's specifications were confirmed on a Novaloc abutment for the white Novaloc retention insert (t-test: p = 0.86) and on a Locator abutment for the green Novaloc retention insert (t-test: p = 0.32). Both systems lost retention force during the experiment. Overall, Novaloc inserts on both abutments showed less wear (decrease to 56%-85% of initial force) and a slower decrease in retention force compared to Locator inserts (decrease to 6%-31% of initial force). CONCLUSIONS: In both systems, wear leads to a varying loss of retention; therefore, regular checks with possible replacement of the inserts are necessary in clinical use. Novaloc attachments seem to be more resistant to the loss of retention than Locator attachments. A cross-combination may be clinically useful in some cases.

Theoretical predictions and recent experimental studies lead to the discovery of an exciting new member of the carbon allotrope family polyynic cyclo[18]carbon (C18 ). Present investigation aims to probe the structure, stability, and properties of coinage metal (M)@C18 complexes using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results unequivocally show that even Cu@C18 , Ag@C18 , and Au@C18 complexes substantially preserve the ground state polyynic structure of C18 . It is also worth to mention that only Au@C18 is a stable D9h structure, however the symmetry is distorted in the case of Cu@C18 and Ag@C18 . Due to computational limitations, in this investigation the M@C18 complexes were scrutinized using the C2v sub abelian group of D9h . The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of D9h conformers are a singlet a1 and two same value singlets a1 ⊕ b1 generated from doublet e, respectively. The non-covalent interaction index (NCI), quantum theory of atoms in molecule (QTAIM), and energy decomposition analysis (EDA) vividly explains the interaction between a coinage metal atom and C18 ring. It is found from the results that the stability of Cu@C18 Ag@C18 , and Au@C18 is governed by the attractive electrostatic, orbital and dispersion interaction.

AIM: To evaluate the long-term survival, incidence of prosthetic/technical and biological complications and the oral-health-related quality of life in patients with an edentulous mandible who were fitted with overdentures on two immediately loaded implants in the symphyseal area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients with edentulous mandibles received two immediately loaded implant-retained dentures with either two Locator attachments or egg-shaped bar attachments. Implant outcomes were recorded after a period of observation of 9 years and included prosthetic complications, modified gingiva index (mGI), modified plaque index (mPI), oral health impact profile (OHIP-G) and radiographic estimation of bone loss. RESULTS: In 2020/2021, 27 patients with 54 implants were still available for follow-up. In total, nine implants in six patients were lost. Survival was 89.1% in the bar group and 91.3% in the Locator group. Implant success was 84.6% in the Locator group and 76.9% in the bar group. The mPI values were significantly higher in the bar group than in the Locator group, whereas no difference was seen in the mGI values. During the observation period, 152 prosthetic complications occurred, but the OHIP-G score did not differ significantly. CONCLUSIONS: There was no difference in implant survival between Locator or joint bar attachments over a 9-year observation period. Joint bar attachments were associated with slightly more complications, while patients in the Locator group were able to maintain better oral hygiene. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess, over a period of 5 years, implant prosthesis and patient-reported outcomes of complete dentures retained by four implant-supported attachments in the edentulous maxilla facing either natural teeth or fixed rehabilitation in the lower jaw. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Implant, prosthodontic and patient-related outcomes were assessed in 30 patients at 1, 3 and 5 years. Prosthodontic survival, complications or maintenance events as well as implant survival were recorded. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were evaluated with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-20) questionnaire and a visual analogue scale (VAS) before implant placement (baseline) and during the follow-up period. RESULTS: After 5 years, three patients dropped out, 21 implants failed, and four overdentures were replaced leading to a prosthesis survival rate of 85.2% (95% CI: 71.8%-98.6%) and an implant survival rate of 80.6% (95% CI: 73.1%-88.0%). Prosthodontic success rate decreased from 86.2% to 74% between the 1st and the 3rd year and reached 63% after 5 years. OHIP results improved significantly from baseline to 1 year (p < .0001) and to 3 years (p = .036), but, at 5 years, the improvement was no longer significant when compared to baseline (p = .12). The overall VAS score remained significantly higher up to 5 years (p < .001). CONCLUSION: A substantial number of prosthetic complications and replacements occurred over the 5-year follow-up. After 5 years, the OHIP-20 deteriorated and reached again the baseline level. Nonetheless, the VAS results suggest significantly increased patient satisfaction after implant-supported retention was provided for the removable prostheses.

BACKGROUND: Attachment material is one of the contributing factors to the degree of wear of the attachment components in mandibular implant-retained overdentures. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the wear behavior of 2 different attachment systems of dissimilar materials in mandibular implant-retained overdentures by qualitative and quantitative methods. METHODS: Two attachment systems of different materials were utilized (n = 16); Titach (Dental Evolutions Inc, Beverly Hills, CA, USA) with a titanium-to-titanium interface and Locator R-Tx (Zest Anchors Inc, Escondido, CA, USA) with a titanium-to-nylon interface. One thousand cycles of overdenture insertion and removal simulating 1-year clinical use were performed. All matrices were removed from the overdentures and all patrices were unscrewed from the implants for wear assessment quantitively using a stereomicroscope and qualitatively using a scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed by using an independent sample t test. RESULTS: After cyclic loading, stereomicroscopic findings showed that the Titach group had statistically significant higher wear value than the Locator R-Tx group (p < 0.001). Moreover, scanning electron microscopy images showed noticeable abrasion in Titach patrix at the area of highest convexity. However, the Locator R-Tx matrix displayed an apparent tear of rubber inserts. CONCLUSIONS: Titach attachment with the titanium-to-titanium interface revealed more wear than Locator R-Tx attachment with the titanium-to-nylon interface. Thus, the type of attachment material influences the degree of wear of the attachment components.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of three types of electronic apex locators (EALs) when two different concentrations of NaOCl irrigation solutions are used by two operators. Materials and Methods: After creating the access cavities for 20 single rooted extracted teeth, the actual canal length (ACL) of each canal was determined visually using a #10 file and magnification. The teeth were subsequently inserted in plastic molds filled with alginate. The electronic measurement of root canal length (EWL) was performed using three different electronic apex locators: Root ZX II, Apex ID, and Dual Pex. Two independent operators, an endodontic specialist with 20 years practice and an undergraduate student in the final year of study, performed the irrigation procedures with two different concentrations of NaOCl (2% and 5.25%), and then measured the EWL using each of the EALs. The accuracy of all EALs, was determined in each case by subtracting the EWL from the ACL. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA test. Results: In the presence of 2% NaOCl solution, for a margin error of ±0.5 mm, Root ZX II, Apex ID, and Dual Pex presented an accuracy of 90%, 80%, and 85% respectively. The increase in the concentration of the irrigation solution affected the accuracy of Root ZX II and Apex ID for both operators, diminishing it to 75% for the same margin error, but improved Dual Pex's accuracy to 100%. Conclusions: The best accuracy in working length determination was obtained by Root ZX II for 2% NaOCl solution and by Dual Pex for 5.25% NaOCl solution with no significant statistical difference when compared.

AIM: This study was conducted to evaluate peri-implant bone height changes and posterior ridge resorption by using two-implant retained polyetheretherketone (PEEK) overdentures with locator attachments following expansion of mandibular knife edge ridges by ridge splitting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients were selected for ridge splitting followed by expansion, implant placement, and bone graft application. Six months later, the fabrication of PEEK overdentures retained by locator attachments was accomplished. Friedman test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Spearman correlation were used to evaluate the changes over time. RESULTS: Peri-implant bone height loss increased significantly with the advance of time between 6 and 12 months following denture insertion. Posterior area index changes were significant over time when measured at the time of denture insertion and twelve months following denture insertion. CONCLUSION: The effect of using PEEK as overdenture base material retained with two locator attachments allowed sharing the load between the peri-implant bone anteriorly and residual ridge posteriorly in cases with ridge splitting technique. AIM: To evaluate the residual alveolar ridge bone height changes regarding the impact of the block-out spacer used during the pick-up procedures of implant-assisted mandibular complete overdentures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a randomized clinical trial conducted on 18 patients. All patients received three mandibular dental implants with definitive locator attachments which were directly picked up with two different techniques. Patients were classified randomly without any bias into two equal groups (Group I block-out spacer) and (Group II without block-out spacer). Over a year, the digital radiographic technique with new technique of reference points was employed to evaluate the changes in the residual alveolar ridge bone heights. The data were statistically analyzed to test the significance difference between groups. RESULTS: Concerning the residual alveolar ridge resorption RRR, group I exhibited a significantly higher RRR than group II. CONCLUSION: In terms of residual alveolar ridge preservation, not using the block-out spacer was more beneficial than using it. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Alveolar bone heights can be affected by the use of block-out spacer during pick-up procedure within accepted physiologic values. AIM: Accurate working length determination during root canal treatment is essential for achieving successful outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of embedding medium on the accuracy of iPex electronic apex locator (EAL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one extracted single-rooted teeth were decoronated and coronally flared with Gates-Glidden burs. Actual canal length (ACL) was obtained by introducing a size 8 K-file until its tip reached the most coronal border of the apical foramen. This step was performed thrice and then averaged. Deducting 0.5 mm from the ACL provided the working length (WL). The teeth were randomly placed in plastic containers filled with freshly mixed alginate, gelatin, or saline, with the lip clip placed in the medium. The blinded operator obtained electronic measurements using iPex by advancing a K-file with a size compatible with the canal attached to the file clip and advanced until the 0.0 mark, then withdrawn to the 0.5 mark. This step was performed thrice and then averaged. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test, with significance level set at 5% (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The mean difference between WL and iPex length obtained in the gelatin model was significantly longer than the difference with mean iPex length in alginate (p = 0.005) and in saline (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between iPex readings obtained in alginate and saline (p = 0.249). CONCLUSION: The use of freshly mixed alginate or saline for ex vivo assessment of iPex is recommended, whereas the use of gelatin could increase the chances of readings longer than looked for. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Identifying the optimum embedding medium for ex vivo testing of EALs permits the comparison and assessment of several factors affecting EALs' precision under standardized conditions. This helps in understanding EAL performance in vivo and in optimizing its clinical utilization.

BACKGROUND: The lack of a well-defined apical constriction in primary teeth raises concerns regarding the accuracy of electronic apex locators (EALs) for measuring working length. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of EALs in determining working length in primary teeth pulpectomies. METHODS: Two reviewers searched ten databases up to September 2021. Clinical studies evaluating the accuracy of the electronic measurement of working length in primary teeth pulpectomies were included. Studies without a comparison group, with samples smaller than ten root canals, and that did not use a multiple frequency EAL were excluded. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the paired differences in mean lengths between measurements obtained by electronic and comparative methods. In addition, a meta-analysis of proportion was applied according to the level of difference between the measures. The risk of bias and applicability of the studies were assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. The certainty of evidence was assessed with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS: Twenty-nine studies were included in the qualitative analysis and twenty-three in the quantitative analysis. The methods of comparison for the electronic measurement were the radiographic method, radiovisiographic, scanning electron microscopy, and direct visualization. The meta-analysis showed that the electronic measurement tends to be shorter than radiographic measurement, while the other methods showed no difference. The proportion analysis showed a higher pooled proportion of difference values between electronic and comparative measurements within -0.5 to +0.5 mm (69.31%). The certainty of the evidence suggested very low confidence in estimating the outcome. DISCUSSION: The results of this review denote a good performance of the EALs in determining working length in primary teeth pulpectomies. However, these results are based on clinical studies with low methodological quality and high heterogeneity, which require careful interpretation for clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS: Although the results suggest acceptable accuracy of EALs in determining working length in primary teeth pulpectomies, the low quality of the included studies and the very low certainty of the evidence require clinicians to interpret these results with caution. More robust evidence is required to support that these devices are accurate for primary teeth. REGISTRATION: CRD42021277414 (PROSPERO).

RESUMEN

With the development of 5G and the Internet of things (IoT), the multi-domain access of massive devices brings serious data security and privacy issues. At the same time, most access systems lack the ability to identify network attacks and cannot adopt dynamic and timely defenses against various security threats. To this end, we propose a blockchain-based access control and behavior regulation system for IoT. Relying on the attribute-based access control model, this system deploys smart contracts on the blockchain to achieve distributed and fine-grained access control and ensures that the identity and authority of access users can be trusted. At the same time, an inter-domain communication mechanism is designed based on the locator/identifier separation protocol and ensures the traffic of access users are authorized. A feedback module that combines traffic detection and credit evaluation is proposed, ensuring real-time detection and fast, proactive responses against malicious behavior. Ultimately, all modules are linked together through workflows to form an integrated security model. Experiments and analysis show that the system can effectively provide comprehensive security protection in IoT scenarios.

RESUMEN

The present case report describes a technique to convert an interim mandibular complete dental prosthesis into a digitally designed and additively manufactured implant overdenture prosthesis. A patient had two dental implants placed, an interim complete denture, and a soft reline procedure completed. After implant osseointegration, existing healing abutments were removed, a functionally generated reline impression with polyvinyl siloxane impression material was made. Using an intraoral scanner, a 360-degree optical scan was obtained of the relined interim prosthesis. A new prosthesis was digitally designed using the optical scan, additively manufactured, and housings picked-up intraorally to create an implant-retained overdenture.

PURPOSE: To estimate the effects of the thermal cycling (TC) process on the metal surfaces of Locators, as well as retention loss, and the correlation between them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five new Locator R-Tx were included in the study. Four areas were marked on each Locators' patrix metal surface and scanned using a confocal scanner (µsurf explorer; NanoFocus). Three surface roughness parameters were measured in the scans: Sa (average distance of peaks from the central plain of the area), Vmp (volume of the peaks in the area), and Spc (mean curvature of the peaks describing the degree of their sharpness). Retention test was performed using Instron® 4500 compression tension tensile tester at a speed of 10 mm/min. The retention tests were done using a working model made of two acrylic blocks in which the Locator system parts were inserted. The surface parameters measurements and the retention tests were performed 2 times, once before and once after TC. The Locators were subjected to 15,000 TC cycles by investing them into 2 tubs with different water temperatures, 55°C and 5°C. During each 60-second cycle, the Locators were submerged in each tub for 20 seconds, with a 10 second transition time between the tubs. The post-TC retention and surface parameters measurements were compared with those prior to TC and the prior to TC measurements served as controls. Changes in parameters before and after TC were analyzed by a two-way ANOVA nested model with random intercept and slope by restricted maximum likelihood method. Correlation between retention and surface parameters was quantified and examined using Kendall's correlation test. The findings were considered statistically significant if p < 0.05. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in retention of 16.6N at the second retention test (p < 0.001). A significant statistical decrease in surface parameters were measured after TC process, Sa and Vmp (18 ×10-3 µm, p = 0.041 and 0.94 ×10-3 1/µm, p = 0.001, respectively). A significant statistical increase in Spc of 6.4 ×10-3 µm3 /µm2 (p = 0.023) was noticed. The correlation between retention decreases and surface changes was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The TC process causes a substantial reduction in retention to the Locator system over time. In addition, TC causes significant but minor changes to the Locator surface area. Most of the changes are in the horizontal dimension.

AIM: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the stress on the implant and to assess the denture displacement for locator and bar and clip attachment types in implant-assisted obturators. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A maxillary edentulous experimental model with a maxillectomy defect was made along with an opposing edentulous mandibular model with self-cure acrylic. Two endosseous implants were placed in the maxillary model. Corresponding obturator complete denture was fabricated for the maxillary model and a complete denture for the mandibular. The attachments were positioned on the implants in maxillary model, and their sleeve/clip was placed on intaglio surface of the dentures. The mounted articulator was placed on a loading apparatus, and force was incrementally applied to it. The strain and displacement for both the attachment types were measured and compared using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). RESULTS: Locator attachment showed the least stress and minimal displacement as compared to bar and clip attachment. CONCLUSION: The stresses around the implants and displacement of the obturator are affected by the attachment type used. It was found that bar and clip (splinted) showed the maximum stresses around the implant and maximum denture displacement. Locator attachment is the better choice over bar and clip because of its additional retentive features. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The advantage of using DIC over the conventional strain gauge analysis is that a full-field data of displacement and strain can be obtained instead of getting a mean value on the small surface where the strain gauge is positioned.

Aims and Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the electronic actual length in detecting artificial perforations of the root canal in the presence of saline solution (NaCl, (Eczacibasi, Istanbul, Turkey), chlorhexidine [CHX (Werax, Tunadent, Izmir, Turkey)], QMix (Dentsply Tulsa, Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and MTAD (Dentsply, Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK, USA). Materials and Methods: The root canals of 25 single-rooted extracted human teeth were perforated artificially in the middle section of the root. The actual lengths up to the perforation site were measured and then, the teeth were embedded in an alginate mold. Electronic measurements of the perforations were obtained by an electronic apex locator according to the manufacturers' recommendations under dry conditions and in the presence of NaCl, CHX, MTAD, and QMix using a #20 K-file. Each canal was irrigated with distilled water and then dried with paper points between the measurements. Statistical analyses were performed using the Friedman test and Spearman Rank correlation coefficient to assess the correlations between the measurement methods. Results: Highest correlation between the actual length and the electronic measurement was observed under dry conditions and NaCl solution (r: 0.932, r: 0.940 respectively), and the least correlation was observed with MTAD solution (r: 0.697) using statistical analysis. Moreover, the accuracy of the electronic apex locator with different irrigation solutions was statistically different from each other (P = 0.001). Conclusion: The most accurate electronic measurements of artificial perforation were obtained under dry conditions or with NaCl.
