In the evolving landscape of biomedical research, the convergence of molecular biology and translational medicine has ushered in a new era of pharmaceutical innovation. This paradigm shift, characterized by significant advances in targeted therapies and gene editing, emphasizes the critical role of integrating academic research - and academic researchers - within industry settings. Contemporary innovation models are moving beyond traditional, corporation-centered frameworks, adopting more open, collaborative approaches. Here, we discuss the challenges and solutions brought about by this new direction in pharma innovation and describe the BioMed X innovation model, a unique open innovation approach that has been growing continuously over the past ten years.

Veterinary pathology credentials serve as a concise means attesting to educational attainments and experiences indicating a readiness for professional practice. Given the cost, time, and stress associated with obtaining different qualifications, pathologists must consider what credentials enhance their readiness. In this commentary, the authors describe how their various degrees and certifications have facilitated their individual and organizational success. The minimum credentials for proficient veterinary pathology practice are a veterinary medical degree (DVM or equivalent) and advanced pathology training (residency and/or on-the-job "apprenticeship") ideally culminating in board certification in pathology (American College of Veterinary Pathologists [ACVP] diplomate status or equivalent). Graduate degrees (MS, PhD, MPH, etc) and/or other qualifications in allied biomedical fields (eg, board certification in internal medicine, laboratory animal medicine, poultry medicine, preventive medicine, or toxicology) may improve employability by affirming specialty knowledge in another complementary discipline. The authors note that pathology positions may be obtained without a long list of degrees or certifications, and that more credentials may provide occupational flexibility for some employers. However, a good work ethic, experience in the field, ability to adapt to changes, job satisfaction, good attitude, and demonstrated productivity are also important, and indeed, they are often the paramount criteria for career success as a veterinary pathologist.

RESUMEN

Ahmed Kathrada (1929-2017), an anti-apartheid activist, political prisoner, and parliamentary politician had been at the centre of South Africa's liberation struggle for six decades and is remembered as a soft-spoken, strong-willed and incorruptible freedom fighter. This psychobiography uses the career development framework of Jeffrey Greenhaus and the ecological human development systems framework proposed by Urie Bronfenbrenner to investigate and illuminate Kathrada's life history. Kathrada was purposively selected as subject due to his extraordinary contributions to the liberation struggle. The study used primary and secondary documentary data. The findings indicate poor alignment between the age categories proposed by the Greenhaus framework and Kathrada's career development stages due to him joining the liberation movement at a very young age, his rapid career development during the early career stage and the impact of imprisonment on his career development. The findings relating to Bronfenbrenner's theoretical framework illustrate the interaction between individual and environmental factors that influenced Kathrada's life and career. Ultimately, employing two theoretical frameworks assisted in formulating a pragmatic, holistic and comprehensive psychobiography that illuminates Kathrada's life and career. The study contributes to the legacy of Kathrada and underscores the importance of longitudinal studies in the career development of extraordinary individuals.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the turnover intention among nurses in eastern China and explore the association between turnover intention and personal characteristics, family factors, and work-related factors. METHODS: A total of 2504 nurses participated in a cross-sectional survey administered in 26 hospitals in Eastern China from October to November 2017. In December 2021, a survey was conducted on nurses who resigned between December 2017 and November 2021. RESULTS: The turnover intention score of in-service nurses was 15 (12-17), and 43% of nurses had a high turnover intention, which was mainly due to the following reasons: age < 40 years, raising two or more children, monthly income of USD786.10-1572.20 or < USD786.10, occupation was assigned or selected according to parental wishes, ≤ 1 or ≥ 2-night shifts per week, contractual or third-party personnel agents, full-time nurses with part-time jobs, and high job stress. Among 102 retired nurses, 80.4% reported family reasons for leaving, 39.2% for work reasons, and 21.6% for other personal reasons. CONCLUSION: Nurses' intention to leave their occupation is high in Eastern China. Age < 40 years old, > 1 child, low income, involuntary career selection, frequent night shifts, informal employment, part-time, and high job stress are significant factors associated with nurses' willingness to leave. Government and hospital administrators should consider ways to address these factors to retain nurses in hospitals in eastern China and improve the quality of nursing services.

BACKGROUND: The freelance economy has seen rapid growth worldwide in recent years and the Philippines is not an exception. Freelance workers are becoming increasingly common in healthcare and research. Early career researchers carry out most of scientific research and can play a critical role in advancing public health by bringing new perspectives and diversity to the field. Existing literature has mostly focused on the experiences of early career researchers in an institutional academic setting. This study aimed to understand the experiences of freelance early career researchers in the health policy and systems space in the Philippines. METHODS: This qualitative study collected data from 18 to 22 March 2022 through virtual interview and focus group discussions. Themes and codes were created based on the topic guide developed. New themes and codes were generated as they emerged. Two researchers coded the data using both a priori and emergent codes. Any coding conflicts were resolved through discussions until intercoder agreement was reached. Interpretation and conclusions from the data were developed by 2 researchers with consideration for its context and relationship between themes. RESULTS: Fifteen current and former freelance researchers participated in the study. Most are female, under 35 years old, and with an undergraduate degree as the highest educational attainment. The findings highlight insights and challenges faced by early career researchers in aspects of: (1) work arrangement, (2) tasks, (3) expectations from senior researchers, (4) development in the health policy and systems field, (5) relationship with peers, and (6) motivations for continuing to work as a freelance health policy and systems researcher. CONCLUSION: This study reveals the challenges freelance early career researchers face, highlighting the need for enhanced support and recognition amidst rapidly evolving workforce demands and complex health dilemmas. Recommendations include structured mentorship, professional development, innovative funding models, and the establishment of a supportive network. Advocacy for policies ensuring freelancer inclusion in the economy and policy-making is crucial. Future research should investigate their experiences further, including their roles, transitions, and the impacts of funding trends, to foster their development and integration into public health research and policy.

BACKGROUND: A standardized approach to prepare trainees for the job search has not been described. The objective of this study was to describe and evaluate an educational series on the job search for Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (NPM) fellows and identify participants' job search knowledge gaps. METHODS: During the 2020-2021 academic year, we created a virtual, seven-part job search series for NPM fellows that required no funding. The series has been repeated annually. We use REDCap surveys to register participants, collect baseline/demographic information, and evaluate the series' impact at the beginning and end of the job search timeline. RESULTS: In the 2021-2022 academic year, 290 individuals registered for the series, and 89% completed the baseline/demographic survey. The majority were NPM fellows (89%). Early career neonatologists, NPM hospitalists, and pediatric residents also utilized the series (11%). Less than 25% reported being "knowledgeable" or "very knowledgeable" of core job search components, including the timeline of the job search, contract negotiation, and the general roles and responsibilities of junior faculty. Of those who completed the final job search survey and underwent a job search (60%, 97 of 162), the majority (86%) felt that career planning during training was stressful and believed that job search preparation should be structured into the NPM fellowship curriculum (81%). Many felt that the Job Search Series was helpful in elucidating components of the job search. CONCLUSIONS: We identified several knowledge gaps in NPM fellows' understanding of how to find, prepare for, and negotiate their first post-training job. We strongly believe these knowledge gaps are not unique to NPM fellows and that all graduate medical education trainees would benefit from a similar, easy-to-implement, no-cost series.

INTRODUCTION: Despite representing an essential workforce, it is unclear how global policy efforts target early-career dementia researchers (ECDRs). Thus, this study aimed to provide an overview of policies through which ECDRs are considered and supported by dementia plans and organizations. METHODS: G20 member states were evaluated for their national dementia plan alongside policies of leading dementia organizations. Data targeting support for ECDRs were extracted and subject to content analysis using inductive coding. Findings were categorized and narratively synthesized. RESULTS: Only China, Denmark, England, Greece, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Spain, and the United States mentioned ECDRs in their national plan. Additionally, 17 countries formalized ECDR support via dementia organizations. Support efforts included research funding, dissemination and networking, career development, and research advice. DISCUSSION: Few nations formally recognized ECDRs in dementia plans or through dementia organizations. To facilitate equal prospects for ECDRs, top-down approaches are urged to enhance and align their efforts. HIGHLIGHTS: Few G20 countries (8/46) had national dementia plans for early-career researchers. Targeted support comes from government and nongovernmental dementia organizations. Support includes funding, training, advice, research dissemination, and networking. Inconsistent definitions and eligibility criteria are barriers to accessing support. Global coordination and top-down policy will aid early-career dementia researchers.

Multiple factors, including job satisfaction, personality traits, and training experiences, influence the career trajectory of hematology/oncology fellows. In an effort to expose hematology/oncology fellows to (1) the various careers in oncology, (2) a diverse group of speakers for future mentorship, and (3) research opportunities, and grant writing experience, we established an annual career development and research retreat. During the retreat, we engaged speakers who covered a range of career trajectories, including academic, private practice, industry, government, and administrative paths. We introduced clinicians and researchers with a track record of providing top-notch mentorship to fellows with aligning interests and detailed research opportunities and grant writing. The sessions were led by senior fellows, and we adopted an in-person and virtual hybrid model to allow speakers from various institutions to participate. Feedback from participants, as gathered through surveys, indicated positive responses: all respondents reported that this retreat was "extremely" or "very helpful," and a majority expressed their intent to pursue academic careers. The curriculum and structure of this retreat may help to inform the development of fellowship career development and research retreats at other institutions.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) K99/R00 award is intended to help postdoctoral scholars transition in a timely manner to research independence and to foster their development of an impactful cancer research program that is competitive for subsequent independent funding. Here we analyzed factors that impact peer review outcomes and evaluated whether NCI K99/R00 awardees have achieved the goals of the K99/R00 funding mechanism. Our analysis of the K99/R00 review criterion scores demonstrates that while all review criterion scores are positively correlated with the overall impact score, the Research Plan criterion is the strongest predictor of the overall impact score and funding outcomes. In addition, our analysis shows the NCI K99/R00 award facilitated the successful transition of postdoctoral scholars to research independence and enhanced the likelihood of K99/R00 awardees to secure subsequent R01-equivalent NIH grant support although not in an accelerated fashion as originally intended. An NCI K99/R00 award was not determined to be a prerequisite to obtain a faculty position, but for some awardees, it was an asset in that transition. Our results suggest that the NCI K99/R00 award is an important component for training and retention of the next generation of independent cancer researchers and to increasing the percentage of women and promoting the diversity of the cancer research workforce.

The rise of academic misconduct poses significant challenges to the integrity and credibility of scholarly research. Early-stage investigators (ESIs), particularly those representing marginalized groups, face unique pressures in navigating the "publish or perish" paradigm while establishing their careers. This commentary articulates strategies for cultivating research environments conducive to the responsible conduct of research (RCR) for ESIs. By establishing shared values, planning research meticulously, conducting research collaboratively, and reporting findings transparently, ESIs can foster a culture of prevention and accountability in research. Ultimately, navigating beyond traditional methodologies to support RCR necessitates a fundamental reimagining of academic culture, reconceptualizing productivity to prioritize quality over quantity, and to encompass "invisible" work often shouldered by investigators with marginalized identities. Addressing scientific misconduct challenges requires a whole-system approach, encompassing individual leadership, policy changes, and institutional accountability. By implementing concrete strategies and systemic reforms, academia can reaffirm its commitment to responsible research conduct and safeguard the integrity of scholarly endeavors.

There is a pressing need to increase the health care and public health workforce in rural communities across the United States. In Colorado, many of the rural communities are medically underserved, lacking resources and employment prospects to appropriately address the health needs of its communities. A potential strategy to address these medically underserved areas and the public health workforce shortage is to develop pathway programs for rural adolescents into health-related careers. The Rural Youth Public Health Summit (Summit) was a pilot pathway program for rural secondary school students hosted at a 4-year public university. The planning and formation of the Summit were done through the collaboration of school administration and teachers, university faculty and staff, educational non-profits, and health care and public health professionals. The Summit's goals were to increase awareness and interest in public health careers and to further partnerships between a university and rural secondary schools. Participants included 22 secondary school students and 10 chaperones from rural schools. Throughout the 2-day Summit, participants engaged in campus tours, a keynote speaker, workshops facilitated by faculty and public health professionals, and an overnight stay in the dorms. Despite some limitations, the Summit showed promising results as a pilot program in its ability to conduct planning, outreach, recruitment, and facilitation of a pathway program to connect rural adolescents to college education and career opportunities in public health.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed significant burden on public health professionals, with many experiencing burnout and leaving the profession. The New York State Public Health Association (NYSPHA) recognized the impact of the pandemic on the state's public health workforce and sought professional development opportunities to support current and future generations of public health professionals. To achieve this goal, NYSPHA solicited input from its members and potential members via survey and focus groups as part of its New Directions Initiative. Seventy individuals participated in listening sessions, and 850 responded to the survey. While more than half felt that NYSPHA is invested in the health and wellness of New Yorkers, fewer considered NYSPHA a leader in public health or a go-to source for public health information. Only about one-third felt connected to NYSPHA as a public health professional. Participants identified multiple professional development opportunities that would encourage them to join or renew their membership including sections or special interest groups (57.4%), opportunities to gain leadership experience (56.7%), volunteering (58.1%), a new committee that addresses public health in the community (55.9%), and mentorship (48.4%). NYSPHA used the results of the survey and focus groups to provide several professional development opportunities including a mentorship program, a new Public Health in Action Committee, and special interest groups in mental health and climate change that have already made a difference in local New York State communities. Similar organizations may use NYSPHA's experience as an example for supporting their workforce to maximize impact on the communities they serve.

The need for a robust public health system in the United States is critical for safeguarding population health. However, current data suggest an insufficient number of individuals entering or staying in the governmental public health workforce. Expanding the public health pipeline requires creative thinking about recruitment and training activities. To attract students to public health and other health-related fields, including medicine, one institution in the Southeast recently initiated the Public Health Influencers Summer Institute (PHISI), a program that addresses the beginning of the career development continuum: recruitment of high school students. For this investigation, we reviewed evaluation data of the PHISI and provided descriptive analyses and selected quotes to reflect student learning. Participants reported increased familiarity with all public health topics after participating in the program, with the greatest increases in public health policy and social determinants of health. In addition, all participants reported increased or significantly increased understanding of public health after participating in the program. While interest in the field of public health increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are not enough individuals entering or staying in the public health workforce, leaving a critical shortfall. Introducing high school students to the field of public health may increase their interest in entering the public health workforce in the future, thereby strengthening the overall public health infrastructure. We propose that the PHISI may be an innovative strategy for increasing both the number and diversity of students interested in pursuing a career in public health.

Psychologists in faculty affairs/faculty development (FAFD) roles can contribute to faculty vitality in academic health centers (AHCs) and mitigate barriers to advancement and retention. We describe a novel psychologist-led consultation service within an Office for Faculty Success (OFS) to support faculty across their career trajectories. We used 5 years of consultation data including faculty demographics, presenting concerns, and post-consultation evaluation data on consultation satisfaction and perceived benefits to examine trends and demographic group differences in consultation frequency, presenting concerns, and perceived benefits. From 2018 to 2023, 434 individuals presented for 683 consultations. Promotion in rank was the most frequent presenting concern. Women and racially/ethically minoritized faculty were found to present more frequently for repeat consultations, for concerns related to careers negotiation and advancement, and for intersectionality issues specific to gender and/or racial minority identities. From years one to five, there was a 93% increase in number of annual consultations performed and users were highly satisfied with the service (3.86/4). The consultation service is a unique, highly acceptable addition to interventions focused on career satisfaction and retention for AHC faculty, especially for women, early career, and minoritized faculty, and can serve as a model for other institutions.

Perceived parental expectations of adolescents have been linked to many high school consequences, yet few studies have examined the relationship between perceived parental expectations and adolescents' career aspirations, and potential mechanisms that underlie these associations. To address this research gap, this study investigated the reciprocal relationship between perceived parental expectations and career aspirations, as well as the mediating role of adolescents' career exploration among Chinese adolescents. Using a longitudinal design, a total of 2540 senior high school students (51.38% girls, Mage = 17.09 ± 0.69) participated in the study. The results showed that perceived parental expectations of adolescents have no direct impact on their subsequent career aspirations. A longitudinal mediating role of career exploration was found between perceived parental expectations and career aspirations. No gender differences were found in any of the pathways. These findings provided support for helping adolescents better set their career aspirations by acknowledging the critical role of parental expectations and the mediating role of career exploration.

Managerial coaching may be an effective strategy to reduce role ambiguity among nurses. Although the benefits of coaching relationships have been demonstrated outside of nursing, there is a lack of evidence about this career development relationship in nursing. A cross-sectional design was used to determine the relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity among military and civilian nurses who work in the Military Health System (MHS). Nurses who worked at a large academic medical center in San Antonio, Texas were asked to participate by completing a survey to examine the variables of interest. Among the 382 nurses that responded, perceived role ambiguity was low and managerial coaching was seldom perceived from first-line supervisors. However, there was a significant negative relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity. This study provides foundational knowledge about the relationship between managerial coaching and role ambiguity for nurses working in the MHS.

BACKGROUND: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)-prepared nurses are expected to exercise leadership in their various roles. Therefore, European nurse scholars developed a cross-national web-based Nursing Leadership and Mentoring Educational (Nurse-Lead) program. PURPOSE: To evaluate changes in leadership practices, professional and research competencies as well as career development of PhD-prepared nurses and doctoral nursing students after participation in the Nurse-Lead program. METHODS: A pre-post-test evaluation was conducted. Surveys addressed leadership, professional and research competencies, and career development. Quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests. Content analysis was used for qualitative data. DISCUSSION: The 30 participants showed significant improvements in all leadership practices, professional competencies, and most research competencies. Participants reported increased confidence in decision-making, taking on new responsibilities, and becoming more visible within research teams. CONCLUSION: Web-based, international leadership and mentoring programs are promising tools for the leadership and professional development of PhD-prepared nurses and doctoral nursing students.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined trends of individual career development awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to psychiatry faculty, especially physicians, in comparison to other departments. METHODS: Data were obtained on 33,392 career development awards from 2013 to 2022. We examined the number of awards each year averaged for 46 non-psychiatry departments, and for departments of psychiatry, the number of awards to all faculty, physicians, and physicians without a PhD. Linear regressions determined whether number of career development awards increased with time and if estimated slopes differed between faculty in non-psychiatry departments and other groups. RESULTS: In departments of psychiatry, 534 faculty received an NIH individual career development award during the 10-year period (534/33,392 or 1.6%), with 118 (22%) to physicians. The number of awards increased significantly over time for other departments and departments of psychiatry (estimated slopes of 3.05 and 2.38, respectively) and did not differ from one another. However, the number of awards to physicians and physicians without a PhD in departments of psychiatry (estimated slopes of 0.51 and - 0.07, respectively) have not increased. This lack of growth in awards for physicians and physicians without a PhD in departments of psychiatry differed significantly in comparison with the increase shown in awards to other departments over time (both p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The number of NIH career development awards has increased NIH-wide, and for non-physician faculty but not for physicians in departments of psychiatry. These trends raise concerns for the future of psychiatrists in academic research.

While the formal curriculum provides structured learning objectives and content, the hidden curriculum shapes students' socialization, sense of belonging, and access to opportunities within academic settings. For diverse students, hidden curriculum often reinforces existing power dynamics and inequities, creating additional barriers to their success. In many cases, the norms and expectations embedded within the hidden curriculum reflect dominant cultural norms, leaving students from marginalized backgrounds feeling alienated or intentionally excluded. Mentors and academic institutions play crucial roles in helping diverse students navigate the hidden curriculum of educational institutions by providing mentorship and resources to address the challenges of hidden curricula. In this paper, we introduce the importance of "NOW": 1) Nomenclature - What is Hidden Curriculum, 2) Opportunity - Opportunities to Address Hidden Curriculum in Higher Education, and 3) Willingness - Fostering an action plan for success in higher education. This paper will introduce a socioecological model for mentoring to address hidden curriculum at the individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels. At the individual and interpersonal level, we will discuss actions students and their mentors can take to develop their mentoring relationships. At the institutional level, we will identify opportunities to support diverse students and their mentors.
