RESUMEN

By observing their social partners, primates learn about reward values of objects. Here, we show that monkeys' amygdala neurons derive object values from observation and use these values to simulate a partner monkey's decision process. While monkeys alternated making reward-based choices, amygdala neurons encoded object-specific values learned from observation. Dynamic activities converted these values to representations of the recorded monkey's own choices. Surprisingly, the same activity patterns unfolded spontaneously before partner's choices in separate neurons, as if these neurons simulated the partner's decision-making. These "simulation neurons" encoded signatures of mutual-inhibitory decision computation, including value comparisons and value-to-choice conversions, resulting in accurate predictions of partner's choices. Population decoding identified differential contributions of amygdala subnuclei. Biophysical modeling of amygdala circuits showed that simulation neurons emerge naturally from convergence between object-value neurons and self-other neurons. By simulating decision computations during observation, these neurons could allow primates to reconstruct their social partners' mental states.

Theories of moral development propose that empathy is transmitted across individuals. However, the mechanisms through which empathy is socially transmitted remain unclear. Here, we combine computational learning models and functional MRI to investigate whether, and if so, how empathic and non-empathic responses observed in others affect the empathy of female observers. The results of three independent studies showed that watching empathic or non-empathic responses generates a learning signal that respectively increases or decreases empathy ratings of the observer. A fourth study revealed that the learning-related transmission of empathy is stronger when observing human rather than computer demonstrators. Finally, we show that the social transmission of empathy alters empathy-related responses in the anterior insula, i.e., the same region that correlated with empathy baseline ratings, as well as its functional connectivity with the temporoparietal junction. Together, our findings provide a computational and neural mechanism for the social transmission of empathy that accounts for changes in individual empathic responses in empathic and non-empathic social environments.

The evolution of the prominent role of the cerebellum in the development of composite tools, and cumulative culture, leading to the rise of Homo sapiens is examined. Following Stout and Hecht's (2017) detailed description of stone-tool making, eight key repetitive involvements of the cerebellum are highlighted. These key cerebellar learning involvements include the following: (1) optimization of cognitive-social control, (2) prediction (3) focus of attention, (4) automaticity of smoothness, appropriateness, and speed of movement and cognition, (5) refined movement and social cognition, (6) learns models of extended practice, (7) learns models of Theory of Mind (ToM) of teachers, (8) is predominant in acquisition of novel behavior and cognition that accrues from the blending of cerebellar models sent to conscious working memory in the cerebral cortex. Within this context, the evolution of generalization and blending of cerebellar internal models toward optimization of social-cognitive learning is described. It is concluded that (1) repetition of movement and social cognition involving the optimization of internal models in the cerebellum during stone-tool making was the key selection factor toward social-cognitive and technological advancement, (2) observational learning during stone-tool making was the basis for both technological and social-cognitive evolution and, through an optimizing positive feedback loop between the cerebellum and cerebral cortex, the development of cumulative culture occurred, and (3) the generalization and blending of cerebellar internal models related to the unconscious forward control of the optimization of imagined future states in working memory was the most important brain adaptation leading to intertwined advances in stone-tool technology, cognitive-social processes behind cumulative culture (including the emergence of language and art) and, thereby, with the rise of Homo sapiens.

Integrating Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) delivery into Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) programs bridges the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention gap for HIV-serodifferent couples prior to the partner living with HIV achieving viral suppression. Behavioral modeling is one mechanism that could explain health-related behavior among couples, including those using antiretroviral medications, but few tools exist to measure the extent to which behavior is modeled. Using a longitudinal observational design nested within a cluster randomized trial, this study examined the factor structure and assessed the internal consistency of a novel 24-item, four-point Likert-type scale to measure behavioral modeling and the association of behavioral modeling with medication-taking behaviors among heterosexual, cis-gender HIV-serodifferent couples. In 149 couples enrolled for research, a five-factor model provided the best statistical and conceptual fit, including attention to partner behavior, collective action, role modeling, motivation, and relationship quality. Behavioral modeling was associated with medication-taking behaviors among members of serodifferent couples. Partner modeling of ART/PrEP taking could be an important target for assessment and intervention in HIV prevention programs for HIV serodifferent couples.

The ability to delay gratification is crucial for a successful and healthy life. An effective way for young children to learn this ability is to observe the action of adult models. However, the underlying neurocomputational mechanism remains unknown. Here, we tested the hypotheses that children employed either the simple imitation strategy or the goal-inference strategy when learning from adult models in a high-uncertainty context. Results of computational modeling indicated that children used the goal-inference strategy regardless of whether the adult model was their mother or a stranger. At the neural level, results showed that successful learning of delayed gratification was associated with enhanced interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) between children and the adult models in the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex but was not associated with children's own single-brain activity. Moreover, the discounting of future reward's value obtained from computational modeling of the goal-inference strategy was positively correlated with the strength of INS. These findings from our exploratory study suggest that, even for 3-year-olds, the goal-inference strategy is used to learn delayed gratification from adult models, and the learning strategy is associated with neural interaction between the brains of children and adult models.

BACKGROUND: Simulation training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is effective but active practice time is limited given the large number of students and the learning effect size remains small. To improve learning during observation, the use of an observer tool (OT) has been advocated. The aim was to assess the value of OT to improve medical students' learning outcomes during CPR simulation training. METHODS: This prospective, randomized study took place during CPR training of medical students. The workshop targeted recognition of unconsciousness, absence of breathing, call for help, cardiac massage and defibrillation. Students practicing in dyads were randomized to use an OT (i.e., a checklist summarizing CPR skills and step-by-step actions) (OT +) or not (OT-) when observing others. At the end of the training, the global performance of the dyad was assessed by an evaluator using the OT checklist (primary outcome). The non-technical skills (NTS), chest compression quality, perceived improvement in knowledge and skills and knowledge score (MCQ) were also recorded. RESULTS: The student dyads were included (OT + : n = 40 and OT-: n = 41). Immediately after training, the global performance was similar between the two groups: OT + : 24 [23-25] and OT-: 23 [21-24] (out of 25), p = 0.052. However, better learning of breathing assessment and cardiac massage performance, as well as a better knowledge score, were found in the OT + group. No significant difference was observed for NTS or perceived improvement in knowledge and skills. Satisfaction was higher in the OT- group. CONCLUSIONS: The use of an OT during CPR simulation did not show any pedagogical benefit on the global performance of medical students. However, a potential benefit was found for several important secondary outcomes. Further studies are needed to confirm these positive results.

The conscious awareness of motor success during motor learning has recently been revealed as a learning factor. In these studies, participants had to learn a motor sequence and to detect when they assumed the execution had reached a maximal fluidity. The consciousness groups showed better motor performance during a delayed post-training test than the non-consciousness control groups. Based on the "similar mechanism" hypothesis between observational and physical practice, we tested this beneficial effect of the conscious awareness of action in an observational learning context. In the present study, two groups learned a motor sequence task by observing a videotaped human model performing the task. However, only the consciousness group had to detect the maximal fluidity of the learning human model during observational practice. Unpredictably, no difference was detected between groups during the post-training test. However, the consciousness group outperformed the non-consciousness control group for tests that assessed the motor knowledges.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheter (CVC) insertion using simulation is an essential skill for anesthesiologists. Simulation training is an effective mean to master this skill. Given the large number of residents and the limited duration of training sessions, the active practice time is limited and residents remain observers of their colleagues for much of the session. To improve learning during observation periods, the use of an observer tool (OT) has been advocated but its educational effectiveness is not well defined. METHODS: Incoming anesthesia residents were randomized to use an OT (i.e. procedural skill-based checklist) (OT+) or not (OT-) when observing other residents during a simulation bootcamp. The primary outcome was a composite score (total 60 points) evaluating CVC procedural skills rated immediately after the training. This score covers theoretical knowledge explored by multiple choice questions (MCQs) (/20), perceived improvement in knowledge and skills (/20), perceived impact on future professional life (/10) and satisfaction (/10). Measurements were repeated 1 month later. Residents in each group recorded the number of CVCs placed and their clinical outcomes (attempts, complications) during the first month of their clinical rotation using a logbook. RESULTS: Immediately after training, the composite score was similar between the two groups: 45.3 ± 4.2 (OT+, n = 49) and 44.4 ± 4.8 (OT-, n = 42) (p = 0.323). Analysis of sub-items also showed no difference. Results at 1 month were not different between groups. Analysis of the logbook showed no difference between groups. No serious complications were reported. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a procedural task-based OT by incoming anesthesia residents and used during CVC insertion simulation training was not associated with better learning outcomes, neither immediately after the session nor when re-evaluated 1 month later. The training at least once on simulator of all residents could limit the impact of OT. Further studies are necessary to define the place of OT in simulation training.

Individuals use the observation of a conspecific to learn new behaviors and skills in many species. Whether observational learning is affected in epilepsy is not known. Using the pilocarpine rat model of epilepsy, we assessed learning by observation in a spatial task. The task involves a naive animal observing a demonstrator animal seeking a reward at a specific spatial location. After five observational sessions, the observer is allowed to explore the rewarded space and look for the reward. Although control observer rats succeed in finding the reward when allowed to explore the rewarded space, epileptic animals fail. However, epileptic animals are able to successfully learn the location of the reward through their own experience after several trial sessions. Thus, epileptic animals show a clear deficit in learning by observation. This result may be clinically relevant, in particular in children who strongly rely on observational learning.

BACKGROUND: Placebo analgesia can be induced by social observational learning. The aim of this study was to determine whether this effect can be influenced by the social status of a model. METHODS: Healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to three groups: a group that observed a video featuring a high-status model (introduced as a professor), a group that observed a video featuring a low-status model (introduced as a janitor), and a control group. Participants observed videos showing a model (of high or low status) undergoing the experimental procedure, during which he received pain stimuli. In each group, half of participants watched a video in which the model rated blue stimuli as more painful (6-8 on the numeric rating scale) and orange stimuli as less painful (1-3 on the numeric rating scale), whereas the other half of participants watched a video in which the model rated orange stimuli as more painful and blue stimuli as less painful. Participants in the control group did not watch any video. Then, all participants received 16 electrocutaneous pain stimuli of the same intensity, preceded by either blue or orange colors. The perceived social status of the model and the trait empathy of participants were measured. RESULTS: Placebo analgesia was induced in both experimental groups, yet no difference in the magnitude of the effect was found. However, we found that the participants' individual ratings of the model's social status predicted the magnitude of placebo analgesia. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to show that the perception of a model's social status is related to the magnitude of placebo analgesia induced by observational learning.

Observing others is an important means of gathering information by proxy regarding safety and danger, a form of learning that is available as early as infancy. In two experiments, we examined the specificity and retention of emotional eavesdropping (i.e., bystander learning) on cue-specific discriminant learning during toddlerhood. After witnessing one adult admonish another for playing with Toy A (with no admonishment for Toy B), toddlers learned to choose Toy B for themselves regardless of whether they were tested immediately or 2 weeks later (Experiment 1). However, if asked to make a toy choice for someone else (i.e., when toddlers' personal risk was lower), approximately half the toddlers instead selected Toy A (Experiment 2). However, such choices were accompanied by toddlers' social monitoring of the adults, suggesting that toddlers may have been attempting to safely gain (via surrogacy) more information about risk contingencies. These findings suggest that toddlers can learn to discriminate valence in a cue-specific manner through social observation.

Blended course designs have been increasingly adopted in medical education. However, research on the relations between the key aspects of students' learning experience and their learning outcomes often only measures students' self-reported experience, neglecting what they actually do in learning. This study combined both self-reported and observational measures of students' learning experiences and examined the relations between the two sets of measures and their contributions to learning outcomes. Australian medical students were asked to report their approaches to, and perceptions of, learning. The frequency and duration of their interactions with both online formative and summative tasks were observed and recorded. Correlation analyses showed that the learning outcome was positively related to deep approaches to using online technologies and duration of interactions with online summative tasks. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis found that the self-reported approaches and duration of interactions jointly explained the learning outcomes, accounting for 6% of the variance. The study demonstrated the complementary nature of using both self-reported and observational measures of students' learning experiences to explain the learning outcomes in blended course designs.

BACKGROUND: There are many studies on placebo analgesia and its underlying mechanisms that show a significant improvement of care for chronic pain patients. However, observational learning has not been researched to this degree. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this work is to provide an overview of the research on placebo analgesia via observational learning. The evidence around whether observational learning can induce placebo analgesia will be discussed. Also, research on the factors that influence observational learning of placebo analgesia will be reviewed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To this end, research data bases were searched for studies on placebo analgesia via observational learning. RESULTS: After inclusion and exclusion criteria were implemented, 12 studies remained. To date, there has been only one study with patients with chronic pain. The small number of included studies do not permit universal statements. However, there is preliminary evidence that observation triggers placebo analgesia as an independent mechanism. Observational learning in an experimental setting can induce placebo effects. Attention focusing on the observation might be critical. The effect sizes tend to be small to large. The effect of classical conditioning and observational learning seem to be of equal size. Live models, video recordings and even pictures of models also induce similar effects. Observational learning induces a change in expectation. DISCUSSION: The evidence included provides the theoretical basis for potential significant clinical impact. Further research is needed to extend these findings to chronic pain patients.

The interruption in the education of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) during the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated telehealth services offered both to the individuals and their parents. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of the simultaneous prompting procedure and observational learning in teaching science facts to middle-school students with ASD by using multiple probe designs with probe trials via telehealth. The researchers also conducted follow-up and novel adult probe sessions to assess the effects of simultaneous prompting procedure and observational learning along with the opinions of students and their mothers in terms of social validity. Results indicated that students acquired the target science facts and observational learning skills, maintained them over time, and generalized them across different people. The implication of the findings and directions for future research was additionally discussed.

The amygdala plays an important role in many aspects of social cognition and reward learning. Here, we aimed to determine whether human amygdala neurons are involved in the computations necessary to implement learning through observation. We performed single-neuron recordings from the amygdalae of human neurosurgical patients (male and female) while they learned about the value of stimuli through observing the outcomes experienced by another agent interacting with those stimuli. We used a detailed computational modeling approach to describe patients' behavior in the task. We found a significant proportion of amygdala neurons whose activity correlated with both expected rewards for oneself and others, and in tracking outcome values received by oneself or other agents. Additionally, a population decoding analysis suggests the presence of information for both observed and experiential outcomes in the amygdala. Encoding and decoding analyses suggested observational value coding in amygdala neurons occurred in a different subset of neurons than experiential value coding. Collectively, these findings support a key role for the human amygdala in the computations underlying the capacity for learning through observation.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Single-neuron studies of the human brain provide a unique window into the computational mechanisms of cognition. In this study, epilepsy patients implanted intracranially with hybrid depth electrodes performed an observational learning (OL) task. We measured single-neuron activity in the amygdala and found a representation for observational rewards as well as observational expected reward values. Additionally, distinct subsets of amygdala neurons represented self-experienced and observational values. This study provides a rare glimpse into the role of human amygdala neurons in social cognition.

Mate choice copying refers to an agent copying the choice for a potential sexual/romantic partner made by a relevant model and has been observed across many species. This study investigated the neural profiles of two copying strategies in humans - acceptance and rejection copying - using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Female participants observed female models accepting, rejecting, or being undecided about (control), males as potential romantic partners before and after rating their own willingness to choose the same males. We found that observing acceptance shifted participants' own choices towards acceptance, while observing rejection shifted participants' choices towards rejection. A network of motivation-, conflict- and reinforcement learning related brain regions was activated for observing the models' decisions. The rostral anterior cingulate gyrus (rACCg) and the caudate in particular were activated more strongly when observing acceptance. Activation in the inferior parietal lobe directly scaled with the magnitude of changes in choices after observing acceptance, while activation in the ACCg also scaled with changes after observing rejection. These findings point to partly dissociable neural profiles for copying strategies that might be linked to different contributions of incentive-driven and vicarious motivation, potentially reflecting the presence or absence of internalised reward experiences.

Evolutionary game theory assumes that players replicate a highly scored player's strategy through genetic inheritance. However, when learning occurs culturally, it is often difficult to recognize someone's strategy just by observing the behaviour. In this work, we consider players with memory-one stochastic strategies in the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, with an assumption that they cannot directly access each other's strategy but only observe the actual moves for a certain number of rounds. Based on the observation, the observer has to infer the resident strategy in a Bayesian way and chooses his or her own strategy accordingly. By examining the best-response relations, we argue that players can escape from full defection into a cooperative equilibrium supported by Win-Stay-Lose-Shift in a self-confirming manner, provided that the cost of cooperation is low and the observational learning supplies sufficiently large uncertainty.

BACKGROUND: Fear-learning through observing others begins early in life. Yet, most observational fear-learning research has focused on adults. The current study used a novel developmentally appropriate observational fear conditioning paradigm to examine differences in observational fear-learning among children, adolescents, and adults. METHOD: Thirty-six typically developing children, 41 typically developing adolescents, and 40 adults underwent differential observational fear conditioning followed by a direct exposure test. Skin conductance response (SCR) and self-reported fear were measured. RESULTS: Successful differential observational fear-learning was demonstrated in all three age groups as indexed by SCR, yet developmental differences emerged. Children showed overall higher physiological arousal during acquisition compared to adolescents and adults. Additionally, children reported less differential fear and were less successful at reporting the conditioned stimulus-unconditioned stimulus contingency compared to adolescents and adults. Finally, adolescents tended to overgeneralize their fear compared with adults. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to compare observational fear-learning among children, adolescents, and adults. The novel task effectively induced observational fear-learning, particularly among adolescents and adults. Findings revealed developmental differences that have both theoretical and clinical implications.

A total of 58 healthy female participants were assigned to classical conditioning, observational learning, or sham conditioning groups. In the classical conditioning group, experimenters associated the application of an inert gel with increased itch intensity themselves. In the observational learning group, a video of the conditioning paradigm was shown. Nocebo effects were measured as the difference in itch or scratching between control and nocebo test phase trials, compared between learning and control groups. Compared with sham conditioning, classical conditioning induced a significant nocebo effect on itch, while observational learning did not. No nocebo effect on scratching was detected. These results highlight the role that learning through direct experiences plays in pruritic symptoms. Future research should investigate how a patient's history of unsuccessful treatments shapes treatment outcomes.

Commensurate with constant technological advances, social robots are increasingly anticipated to enter homes and classrooms; however, little is known about the efficacy of social robots as teaching tools. To investigate children's learning from robots, 1- to 3-year-olds observed either a human or a robot demonstrate two goal-directed object manipulation tasks and were then given the opportunity to act on the objects. Children exhibited less imitation from robotic models that varied with task complexity and age, a phenomenon we term the "robot deficit." In addition, the more children engaged with the robot prior to administration of the imitation task, the more likely they were to replicate the robot's actions. These findings document how children are able to learn from robots but that ongoing design of robotic platforms needs to be oriented to developing more socially engaging means of interacting.
