BACKGROUND: The first step towards creating a sound educational environment and healthcare in a medical institute is employing medical teachers who maintain ethical behavior in their professional practice. A method where bias and subjectivity can be minimized is by making the recruitment process objective. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The recruitment started as an offline process and was soon converted into an online form incorporating parameters for scoring. A total of 1,151 medical teachers had submitted their applications for posts in various departments, and 778 candidates were shortlisted and called for an interview. After the interview process, a unique symposium on the selection of medical teachers was organized. The feedback was incorporated into the online application that was released for the subsequent phases of recruitment. RESULTS: The response rate of the study was 96.55%. Analysis of the feedback by the applicants showed that 47.59% of the applicants were of the opinion that the prevailing selection process in the country needs a change; 84.14% felt that the inclusion of objective criteria would make the selection process more transparent; and 91.03% were happy with the stratification of marks; 82.75% of the applicants and experts felt that knowledge of statistics for quality research and publications in indexed and institutional journals may be considered for the selection process; and 52.41% thought that all authors of an article should be given equal weightage. Adopting a fairly new concept of workplace-based assessment (WPBA) in India was acceptable to 83.45%. CONCLUSIONS: Parameter-based, objective selection reduces bias, and merit alone is recognized.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to analyze social media platforms usage by blood donors, their responses to blood donation requests, most engaging ways of blood donor motivation from a donor perspective, and compare across different generations of blood donors. METHODS: This research study is a Descriptive and quantitative cross-sectional analysis: a Google form Questionnaire-based survey conducted at Blood Centre, Tertiary-care Institute, South India (October 2020 to December 2020). All blood donors visiting the Blood Centre were eligible to participate in the survey. Facilities for blood donors to record their responses were made available using a QR code generated and displayed at the Blood Centre. The participants were categorized based on their age into different generations as: Generation Z currently aged 18-25 years, Millennials or Generation Y aged 26-40 years, and Generation X 41-58 years. RESULTS: Total 600 Google-form responses collected were analyzed. Majority 580/600 (96.7%) participants actively used WhatsApp which remained the most frequently used Social media application across the three Generations X, Y, and Z of blood donors. 72% of Generation X and 60% of Millennials found live interactive sessions as more engaging than Generation Z (49%) (p < 0.05). Generation X donors found Newspaper (55%) and FM (47%) more engaging compared to Millennials (27%, 28%) and Generation Z (26%, 15%) (p < 0.05). DISCUSSION: Although Social Media usage is in practice for blood donor motivation and recruitment, tailored motivational content is essential to target the blood donors across different age generations to achieve effective blood donor motivation leading to Blood donation.

The current study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG (S-protein) antibodies along with neutralizing assay (RBD-domain) among the whole blood donors without any prior Covid-19 history or symptoms visiting Blood Centre at a Tertiary care institution, South India amidst the ongoing pandemic. During September 2020 to March 2021, 1034 whole blood donors were enrolled into the study and were screened for anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies using Chemiluminescence assay followed by neutralizing antibodies using surrogate neutralization ELISA. The study reported seroprevalence of 49.4%, (95% CI 46.3-52.5) among whole blood donors, with test sensitivity and specificity adjusted prevalence of 54.9% (95% CI 51.5-58.3). Seroprevalence was similar across age groups, gender, voluntary/replacement donations, area of residence, ABO and Rh groups without any statistical significance. However higher IgG antibody responses were found to be elicited in the 30-45 years age group when compared with 18-29 years age group (p value 0.046). This study also analysed the mean neutralizing capacity of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among 97 blood donors which was 71.9 (SD: + 21.03, range 15.5 to 97.3). Donor samples with SARS-CoV-2 IgG S/Co > 9.5 had significantly higher neutralising capacity (> 68%) when compared with donor samples of S/Co < 9.5 (p value 0.000). Real-time seroprevalence studies will help to know the herd immunityamong the blood donors which will assist in knowing the Covid-19 transmission dynamics, distribution of immunity levels at a particular point in time, immunity gaps, development of novel therapeutics and prioritize the vaccination programmes to high risk individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Though moderate to severely ill COVID-19 patients are being treated using COVID Convalescent plasma across the world, there is a lack of standardization or information about the relative neutralizing capacity of antibodies from convalescent plasma donors. The current study aimed to compare the neutralizing antibody inhibition levels between COVID-Convalescent plasma from apheresis donors who had symptomatic COVID-19 history and asymptomatic blood donors, i.e., whole blood donors without prior any COVID-19 positive diagnosis nor symptoms/contact history related to COVID-19. METHODS: Observational study conducted at the Blood Centre, Tertiary Care Hospital, South India on blood donor samples during the period July-December 2020. A total of 90 samples (43 convalescent plasma donors and 47 whole blood donors) were tested for SARS-CoV-2-IgG and Neutralising antibodies. RESULTS: No significant difference in neutralization capacity was observed between these symptomatic vs. asymptomatic donors. Also, inhibition % appeared similar in the two groups with respect to age, gender, blood group, donation status, or type of donation without any statistical significance. On analyzing the correlation between the SARS-CoV-2-IgG levels and neutralizing antibodies among the WBD and CCP, both the groups showed a positive correlation, while neutralizing antibodies showed a significant correlation with SARS-CoV-2-IgG levels among the whole blood donors (Pearson correlation P=0.000). CONCLUSION: No significant difference in neutralizing antibody capacity was observed in asymptomatic whole blood donors and convalescent plasma donors. Therefore, donors having adequate levels of SARS-CoV-2-IgG antibody levels on screening can be considered for convalescent plasma donation irrespective of prior COVID-19 diagnosis or COVID-related symptoms.

Introduction The SARS-CoV-2 illness (COVID-19) has spread around the world, primarily through person-to-person transmission, and is a serious public health concern. Based on the severity of illness symptoms, SARS-CoV-2 infection can be classified as either apparent or occult. To date, real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on respiratory specimens, particularly nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs, or nasopharyngeal wash or aspirate, has been the gold standard for the identification of COVID-19. A negative RT-PCR does not necessarily rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection. Occult COVID-19 infections could least be identified with RT-PCR. Aims and objectives To assess the prevalence of possible occult COVID-19 infection in healthcare personnel by RT-PCR and serology testing for SARS-CoV-2 virus. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on health care workers at a tertiary care hospital in South India during the period from October 2020 to January 2021. None of the study participants were vaccinated against COVID-19 during the study period. Nasopharyngeal swabs collected for RT-PCR were tested using Cobas 480 platform (Roche, Basel, Switzerland). Peripheral blood venous sampling was performed to collect EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and plain samples. SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies against spike proteins were estimated using ECI Vitros platform (Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, Raritan, USA). Results The mean age of study participants was 34.78 years (SD±9.51) with an age range of 19-69 years. The study participants were stratified into age groups of 19-25 years, 26-40 years, 41-60 years, and above 60 years, gender, ABO and Rh blood groups, and occupational and further based on their area of work as Covid and Non-Covid for the purpose of statistical analysis. Total 190 samples from healthcare workers (HCWs) were tested for RT-PCR using nasopharyngeal swabs collected at the time of enrolment into the study, and all the 190 samples tested negative for RT-PCR. Among 190 HCW samples screened for SARS-CoV-2-IgG antibodies, 48 (25.3%) were found reactive for IgG antibodies while 142 (74.7%) were found non-reactive. Conclusion Our study findings suggested that using RT-PCR testing, which may only identify those with a prolonged viral shedding period and minimum viral loads, the proportion of asymptomatic/occult infections could be underestimated.
