RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Round window approaches are used to insert a cochlear implant electrode array into the scala tympani. This study aimed to review the literature to find the reported round window approaches. METHOD: This review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses ('PRISMA') guidelines. Articles that described their surgical approach to the round window were included. The PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched through to June 2021. The study protocol was registered on Prospero (reference number: CRD42021226940). RESULTS: A total of 42 reports were included. The following approaches were documented: the standard facial recess, keyhole, retrofacial, modified suprameatal, transaditus, combined posterior tympanotomy and endomeatal, modified Veria, canal wall down approaches, and endoscopically assisted technique. CONCLUSION: This review suggested that there are numerous distinct round window approaches, providing alternatives when the round window is inaccessible through the standard facial recess.

RESUMEN

Congenital Mid-line Cervical Cleft (CMCC) is a rare but interesting congenital anomaly of the neck that is frequently misdiagnosed. Much controversy exist regarding its aetiology. Embryologically, the occurrence of CMCC is thought to be due to many hypotheses that include impaired mid-line fusion of the first or second branchial arches, exteriorisation of a thyroglossal duct remnant, and or increased pressure in the cervical area from the pericardial roof in the developing embryo. Histologically, the cleft usually consists of a stratified keratinized squamous epithelium with hyperkeratosis, dermal fibrosis and little or no skin appendages. Associated clinical features could include thyroglossal duct cysts, cleft lip/mandible/sternum, cervical contractures, mandibular spurs, microgenia and or bronchogenic cysts. In this article we present a patient with CMCC. An extensive review of the literature is also included.

RESUMEN

Retroperitoneal epidermoid cysts are rare. The authors report a case of an 11-year-old boy with an asymptomatic subdiaphragmatic cyst, which was found incidentally during an investigation for hypertension. At laparoscopy, the cyst was densely adherent to the diaphragm, resulting in a pneumothorax during dissection. Nevertheless, the excision and the diaphragmatic repair could be completed laparoscopically without complication. Microscopic examination showed an epidermoid cyst. No similar case has been reported in the literature.
