RESUMEN

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the menstrual symptoms and dysmenorrhea in university students who underwent Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), in Mogadishu, Somalia, and students who did not undergo FGM/C in Ankara, Türkiye. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study design was used. Results: Among the participants with FGM/C, 88.5% were Type 1 and the age at FGM/C was 8 years. The pain severity was 6.20±2.54 in women with FGM/C and was higher than that of those without FGM/C (5.97±2.32), but no significant difference was found. Among those who had FGM/C, 66% had a menstrual duration of 3-5 days, while 52.0.% of those who did not have FGM/C had a menstrual duration of 6-8 days (p<0.05). While 85.1% of those without FGM/C had a menstrual cycle of 21-35 days, 35% of those with FGM/C had a menstrual cycle of less than 20 days (p<0.05). It was found that 95% of those who have undergone female circumcision and 90.2% of those who have not had dysmenorrhea (p<0.05). Painkillers were always used by 28% of women with FGM/C and 26.3% of women without FGM/C (p<0.05). The total MSS score of those who have not had FGM/C was 3.34±0.72 and the score of those who have had FGM/C was 2.91±0.74 (p<0.05). The negative effects sub-dimension score was found to be higher in the non-FGM/C group with 3.20±0.75, while the coping methods sub-dimension score was higher in the FGM/C group with 2.91±1.13 (p<0.05). Conclusion: FGM/C is still common in Somalia. Our study results showed that having FGM/C may cause differences in dysmenorrhea and menstrual symptoms. Efforts to increase students' effective coping with menstrual symptoms and dysmenorrhea are thought to be useful.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Dental imaging comprises a wide range of techniques and modalities, each with different diagnostic features influenced by numerous parameters, all of which contribute to the precision and effectiveness of dental evaluations and treatments. This study examined the dimensional reproducibility of arch measurements from CBCT scans with different voxel sizes and exposure parameters compared to a reference model from Extra-oral scanners (EOS) and how these parameters affected digital matching and diagnostic image quality. METHODS: A diagnostic observational study of arch dimensions, including inter-canine, inter-premolar, intermolar, arch width and arch length, was conducted on digital models (DMs) created from 65 CBCT scans of a full dentate epoxy maxillary model. The measurements obtained from EOS scans served as the control for the study. Normality was tested with the Shapiro-Wilk test, comparisons used the Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons for significant results, and data were analysed using IBM SPSS (Version 26.0), with significance set at p < .05. RESULTS: Significant deviations were revealed among study groups, with group I (smallest voxel size) consistently displaying the lowest values, mean (SD) deviation was reported as 0.01 (0.006) and group IV (lowest kV value) exhibiting the highest deviations, mean (SD) deviation of 0.16 (0.17). CONCLUSION: Combining a small voxel size (0.12 mm) with high milliampere (8 mA) and kilovoltage (90 kV) settings in CBCT ensured detailed anatomical visualization and accurate linear measurements, crucial for precise dental assessments, and emphasizing the necessity for strict control over CBCT parameters in dental applications.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to analyse the social media activity related to endodontic research over the last 10-years. All research articles published in endodontic journals listed in Scopus (Sc) published in 2012 and 2018 were included in our study. The Altmetric Attention Score (AAS), Twitter, and Facebook mentions were obtained for each article. Citation counts were extracted using two citation metrics: Google Scholar (GS) and Sc. Correlations between the AAS, the number of social media mentions, and citations were analysed using Spearman's rank order correlation coefficient. A multivariable Poisson log-linear regression analysis shows that papers mentioned on social media gain about 35% more citations in GS and 31% more citations in Sc. The academic citations per article on GS and Sc were positively correlated with the AAS. Our data suggest an increasing positive correlation between social media mentions and article citations over the years.

RESUMEN

The cosmetic industry is rapidly rising worldwide. To overcome certain deficiencies of conventional cosmetics, nanomaterials have been introduced to formulations of nails, lips, hair, and skin for treating/alleviating hyperpigmentation, hair loss, acne, dandruff, wrinkles, photoaging, etc. Innovative nanocarrier materials applied in the cosmetic sector for carrying the active ingredients include niosomes, fullerenes, liposomes, carbon nanotubes, and nanoemulsions. These exhibit several advantages, such as elevated stability, augmented skin penetration, specific site targeting, and sustained release of active contents. Nevertheless, continuous exposure to nanomaterials in cosmetics may pose some health hazards. This review features the different new nanocarriers applied for delivering cosmetics, their positive impacts and shortcomings, currently marketed nanocosmetic formulations, and their possible toxic effects. The role of natural ingredients, including vegetable oils, seed oils, essential oils, fats, and plant extracts, in the formulation of nanocosmetics is also reviewed. This review also discusses the current trend of green cosmetics and cosmetic regulations in selected countries.

RESUMEN

The accordion phenomenon is a rare pseudo-complication observed during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), which can mimic coronary dissection, spasm, or thrombus formation. Here we present a patient with inferior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), who developed multiple pseudo lesions in the tortuous right coronary artery (RCA) during PCI. An emergency coronary angiography was performed, but unfortunately, the lesion developed into an accordion-like shape in the middle segment of the right coronary artery (RCA), which looked like a coronary dissection. Despite attempts to resolve the abnormality with intracoronary nitrates, the accordion effect persisted, leading to a drop in blood pressure. Subsequent administration of isotonic solution and additional intracoronary nitrates eventually alleviated the dissection pattern. Due to the small diameter of the posterior descending artery, balloon angioplasty was performed to complete the procedure successfully. The patient was discharged 2 days later with a prescribed regimen of aspirin, prasugrel, atorvastatin, and carvedilol. Follow-up after 1 week indicated the patient's well-being, with no reported complaints.

RESUMEN

To investigate the association between parenting style and child's dental caries. Parents presenting with their children to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine for an initial exam or re-care appointment completed a demographic survey and the parenting styles and dimensions questionnaire. Recruitment of subjects started in May 2019 and ended in February of 2020. Child's decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft) index, diet score, sex, and age were recorded, as were parent's race, education level, and form of payment. Adjustment for confounders was done using multivariable negative binomial regression. The sample size was 210 parent/child dyads. In the multivariable analysis, parenting style and child's dmft were not significantly associated (p > 0.05). Parents with an education level less than high school (p = 0.02) and at the high school graduate level (p = 0.008) were significantly associated with children who had higher dmft, compared to parents with a college degree or higher. Children with excellent diet scores had significantly lower dmft than children with a diet score in the "needs improvement" category (p = 0.003). There was no significant evidence that parenting style is associated with child's dental caries. Parent's education level and child's diet score were significantly associated with child's dmft, less than high school (p = 0.02) and at the level of high school graduate (p = 0.008). Pediatric dental professionals should be aware of these risk indicators.

RESUMEN

Protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) function as key molecules in the signaling pathways in addition to their impact as a therapeutic target for the treatment of many human diseases, including cancer. PTKs are characterized by their ability to phosphorylate serine, threonine, or tyrosine residues and can thereby rapidly and reversibly alter the function of their protein substrates in the form of significant changes in protein confirmation and affinity for their interaction with protein partners to drive cellular functions under normal and pathological conditions. PTKs are classified into two groups: one of which represents tyrosine kinases, while the other one includes the members of the serine/threonine kinases. The group of tyrosine kinases is subdivided into subgroups: one of them includes the member of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), while the other subgroup includes the member of non-receptor tyrosine kinases (NRTKs). Both these kinase groups function as an "on" or "off" switch in many cellular functions. NRTKs are enzymes which are overexpressed and activated in many cancer types and regulate variable cellular functions in response to extracellular signaling-dependent mechanisms. NRTK-mediated different cellular functions are regulated by kinase-dependent and kinase-independent mechanisms either in the cytoplasm or in the nucleus. Thus, targeting NRTKs is of great interest to improve the treatment strategy of different tumor types. This review deals with the structure and mechanistic role of NRTKs in tumor progression and resistance and their importance as therapeutic targets in tumor therapy.

RESUMEN

The current study was designed to assess the impact of L-carnitine (LC) supplementation in the drinking water of growing Alexandria-line rabbits on performance and physiological parameters. Two hundred eighty-eight 35-day-old rabbits were divided into four groups of twenty-four replicates each (seventy-two rabbits/treatment). The treatment groups were a control group without LC and three groups receiving 0.5, 1, and 1.5 g/L LC in the drinking water intermittently. The results showed that the group receiving 0.5 g LC/L exhibited significant improvements in final body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and performance index compared to the other groups. The feed intake remained unaffected except for the 1.5 g LC/L group, which had significantly decreased intake. Hematological parameters improved in all supplemented groups. Compared with those in the control group, the 0.5 g LC/L group showed significant increases in serum total protein and high-density lipoprotein, along with decreased cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein. Compared to other supplemented groups, this group also demonstrated superior carcass traits (carcass, dressing, giblets, and percentage of nonedible parts). In conclusion, intermittent supplementation of LC in the drinking water, particularly at 0.5 g/L twice a week, positively influenced the productivity, hematology, serum lipid profile, and carcass traits of Alexandria-line growing rabbits at 84 days of age.

RESUMEN

Blood transfusion is a common therapeutic intervention in hospitalized patients. There are numerous indications for transfusion, including anemia and coagulopathy with deficiency of single or multiple coagulation components such as platelets or coagulation factors. Nevertheless, the practice of transfusion in critically ill patients has been controversial mainly due to a lack of evidence and the need to consider the appropriate clinical context for transfusion. Further, transfusion carries many risk factors that must be balanced with benefits. Therefore, transfusion practice in ICU patients has constantly evolved, and we endeavor to present a contemporary review of transfusion practices in this population guided by clinical trials and expert guidelines.

RESUMEN

The current study aimed to evaluate the hydrolysis of whole fat milk (WFM) and sweet whey (SW) using ß-galactosidase (ß-gal) after covalent immobilization onto activated alginate/tea waste (Alg/TW) beads as a novel carrier. The optimum temperature for free and Alg/TW/ß-gal was 40 °C and the ideal pH was 7.0. However, Alg/TW/ß-gal displayed better stabilities at high temperatures and a wide pH range. Additionally, the value of Km and Vmax for Alg/TW/ß-gal was higher than the free enzyme. The Alg/TW/ß-gal showed better residual activity (78.6 %) after 90 storage days at 4 °C. The reusability of Alg/TW/ß-gal was very good as it conserved its full activity after 15 consecutive cycles and conserved 93 % of its initial activity after 10 cycles with ONPG (O-nitrophenyl-ß-D-galactopyranoside) and lactose as a substrate, respectively. The impact of Alg/TW/ß-gal on WFM and SW using HPLC analysis revealed a remarkable decrease in lactose concentration and increase of glucose and galactose concentrations. The SW exhibited higher degree of lactose hydrolysis (97.3 %) compared to WFM (62.4 %). Besides, SW had a prominent increase in total phenolic content (96.8 mg/L) compared to WFM (54.3 mg/L). The antioxidant activity had increased after enzyme treatment in both WFM and SW. The GC-MS analysis for volatile compounds identified twenty-five flavour constituents. Finally, Alg/TW/ß-gal has a potential application for obtaining healthy, acceptable, and commercial dairy products of low lactose.

RESUMEN

In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) intercalated CuFe layered double hydroxides (LDH) membranes were fabricated and investigated for UV-LED/persulfate degradation of methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), methyl orange (MO), and Eriochrome black T (EBT) dyes from water. The PVDF-CuFe membrane exhibited improved heterogeneity, surface functionality (CuO, Fe-O, Cu-O-Fe), surface roughness, and hydrophilicity. The process parameters were optimized by response surface methodology, and maximum MB removal (100%) was achieved within 45.22-178.5 min at MB concentration (29.45-101.93 mg/L), PP concentration (0.5-2.41 g/L) and catalyst dosage (1.84-1.95 g/L). The degradation kinetics was well described by a pseudo-first-order model (R2 = 0.982) and fast reaction rate (0.029-0.089/min). The MB dye degradation mechanism is associated with HO·/SO4•- reactive species generated by Fe3+/Fe2+ or Cu2+/Cu+ in PVDF-CuFe membrane and PP dissociation. The PVDF-CuFe membrane demonstrated excellent recyclability performance with a 12% reduction after five consecutive cycles. The catalytic membrane showed excellent photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet (100%), methyl orange (79%), and Eriochrome black T (60%). The results showed that UV-LED/persulfate-assisted PVDF-CuFe membranes can be used as a recyclable catalyst for the effective degradation of dye-contaminated water streams.

RESUMEN

Bee-derived pharmaceutical products, including propolis (PRO) and royal jelly (ROJ), possess outstanding pharmacological properties. However, their efficiency in counteracting the deleterious influences of cadmium (Cd) in testes and the relevant mechanisms entail further investigations. Therefore, this study sheds light on the therapeutic efficacy of PRO and ROJ against testicular dysfunction and infertility induced by Cd. Toward this end, 30 mature male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into six groups (5 animals/group), including (I) control, (II) Cd, (III) PRO, (IV) ROJ, (V) PRO + Cd, and (VI) ROJ + Cd groups. Furthermore, antioxidant factors, semen quality, hormonal levels, steroidogenic enzymes, and genotoxicity were assessed. Moreover, histopathological and ultrastructural attributes and offspring rates were investigated. The Cd-treated group revealed marked reductions in reduced glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) with an amplification of lipid peroxidation in testes, indicating disruption of the antioxidant defense system. Furthermore, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and DNA damage were significantly heightened, implying inflammation and genotoxicity, respectively. Moreover, steroidogenic enzymes, including 17ß-Hydroxy Steroid Dehydrogenase 3 (HSD17b3), 3ß-Hydroxy Steroid Dehydrogenase 2 (HSD3b2), 17α-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase (CYP17A1), and steroid 5α-reductase 2 (SRD5A2) were markedly diminished accompanied with disorders in luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone. Besides, spermatozoa quality was reduced, associated with a diminution in the diameter of seminiferous tubules. By contrast, PRO or ROJ significantly protected and/or counteracted the Cd-induced pathophysiological consequences, ameliorating antioxidant and inflammatory biomarkers, steroidogenic enzymes, hormonal levels, and sperm properties, along with lessening DNA impairments. Critically, histological and ultrastructural analyses manifested several anomalies in the testicular tissues of the Cd-administered group, including the Leydig and Sertoli cells and spermatozoa. Conversely, PRO or ROJ sustained testicular tissues' structure, enhancing spermatozoa integrity and productivity. Interestingly, treatment with PRO or ROJ improved fertility indices through offspring rates compared to the Cd-animal group. Our data suggest that PRO is a more effective countermeasure than ROJ against Cd toxicity for securing the delicate testicular microenvironment for spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis.

RESUMEN

Bovine theileriosis is a protozoan disease caused by the intracellular parasite (Theileria spp.) transmitted by ticks and it is considered one of the most significant parasitic diseases, potentially endangering Egyptian cattle herd industry. The present study was conducted for a molecular survey of bovine theileriosis and its associated risk factors (season variations, geographical locations, breeds, age, sex, tick infestation, and acaricide applications) in three Egyptian governorates, Beni-Suef, Al-Faiyum, and Al-Minya for a year extended from December 2021 to November 2022, in addition, genetic diversity of Theileria isolates. A total of 961 cattle were examined for Theileria infection clinically, microscopically, and by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using 18S rRNA gene for piroplasms DNA detection, Theileria genus-specific primers of the small subunit of rRNA gene, and Theileria annulata specific primers of the Tams-1 gene. The prevalence rate of bovine theileriosis was 9.26%, and 11.86% using Giemsa-stained blood smear and PCR, respectively. All positive samples screened by Theileria genus-specific primers were positive for T. annulata when screened by the specific primers. Based on molecular screening, season, cattle breeds and acaricide applications were considered risk factors for T. annulata infection, while locality, age, sex and tick infestation had insignificant effects with the occurrence of the disease. A potential novel T. annulata haplotype based on the Tam-1 gene was identified with accession numbers OR364144 and OR915851. Therefore, T. annulata was the only Theileria species found and played a significant problem in the cattle population. This study could be the basis for future studies on unexplored regions and different animal species for well-structured prevention and control measures.

RESUMEN

The current study aimed to explore the genotoxic impacts of the insecticide acetamiprid (ACP) on the myocardium and assess the ameliorative role of resveratrol (RSV). Male rats (10/group) were treated via oral route for 90 days: control; ACP (25 mg/kg); RSV (20 mg/kg); ACP+RSV. Peripheral blood micronucleus test, oxidative stress analysis, comet assay, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine and gene expression assessment were performed. The findings revealed that ACP has myocardial genotoxic effects, as demonstrated by increased micronucleus and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine formation and increased all comet parameters. Oxidative stress analysis demonstrated that ACP elevated H2O2 and NO levels while decreasing catalase and GST activities. Acetamiprid dysregulated the expression of genes related to oxidative stress and DNA damage response. However, RSV co-treatment resulted in significant protection against these genotoxic impacts. Resveratrol reduced DNA damage and restored the oxidative balance in the myocardium. Moreover, RSV modulated the Nrf2/HO-1 and Atm/P53 pathways, potentiating antioxidant defense and DNA repair.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Instantaneous wave-free ratio (iwFR) is a well-validated method for functional evaluation of intermediate coronary lesions. A recently developed Murray law-based QFR (µQFR) allows wire-free FFR estimation using a high-quality single angiographic projection. We aim to determine the diagnostic accuracy of µQFR as compared to wire-based iwFR for physiological assessment of coronary lesions in a sample of Egyptian patients. RESULTS: Over a one-year period, patients who previously underwent iwFR assessment of an intermediate coronary stenosis (40-90%) were retrospectively included. µQFR analysis was then performed offline using a dedicated artificial intelligence (AI)-aided computation software. All the measurements were performed blinded to iwFR results, and the agreement between iwFR and µQFR values was tested. Forty-nine patients (mean age 57.9 ± 9 years, 72.9% males) were included. Mean value of iwFR and µQFR was 0.90 ± 0.075 and 0.79 ± 0.129, respectively. There was a significant moderate positive linear correlation between µQFR and iwFR (r = 0.47, p = 0.001; 95% CI 0.22-0.68) with moderate-to-substantial agreement between the two methods (Kappa 0.6). In assessing the diagnostic accuracy of µQFR, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.84 (95% CI 0.717-0.962) for predicting functionally significant lesions defined as iwFR < 0.89. The sensitivity and specificity of µQFR < 0.8 for detecting physiological significance of coronary lesions were 89% and 74% with positive and negative predictive values of 70 and 91%, respectively. CONCLUSION: µQFR has good diagnostic accuracy for predicting functionally significant coronary lesions with moderate correlation and agreement with the gold standard iwFR. Angiography-derived µQFR could be a promising tool for improving the utilization of physiology-guided revascularization.

RESUMEN

Background: Cleft lip and palate are the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies. They account for approximately 13% of all congenital anomalies. Objectives: To study the presentation of cleft lip and the early results of surgical repair among patients who presented to our centers. Methods: This was a hospital-based prospective cohort study of 72 patients who underwent cleft lip repair in Sudan. Results: The commonest age group was between 10-18 months. The male-to-female ratio was 2:1, and a family history of cleft lip was found in 2.8% of patients. The cleft lip was complete in 81.9%, incomplete in 12.5%, and hybrid in 5.6% of patients. Associated cleft palate was observed in 54 patients. Associated syndromes were found in 10 patients. The surgery was carried out in most patients at 9 months or less; in 4 patients, it was more than 18 months. Achievement of reasonable lip repair was moderate (50% collectively). High achievement was observed for criteria, such as accurate union (90.3%), and sub-moderate achievement in even vermillion border and cupid's bow (44%), low nose symmetry (30.6%), and quality of scar (18.1%). Early complications were reported at the rate of 13.9%. Patient satisfaction was 59.7%; however, the professionals showed higher satisfaction levels (66.7%). The anthropometric measurements of normal infants were moderately similar to those of the infants who underwent surgery. Conclusion: The patients with cleft lip showed early presentation, with a predominance of the male gender and left side pattern. The preliminary outcome of cleft lip repair was moderate, with variations in different criteria. Patient and professional satisfaction were above average.

RESUMEN

Invasive candidiasis poses a worldwide threat because of the rising prevalence of antifungal resistance, resulting in higher rates of morbidity and mortality. Additionally, Candida species, which are opportunistic infections, have significant medical and economic consequences for immunocompromised individuals. This study explores the antifungal potential of chitosan to mitigate caspofungin resistance in caspofungin-resistant Candida albicans, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis isolates originating from human and animal sources using agar well diffusion, broth microdilution tests, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis of treated Candida cells. Reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was performed to assess the expression of SAGA complex genes (GCN5 and ADA2) and the caspofungin resistance gene (FKS) in Candida species isolates after chitosan treatment. The highest resistance rate was observed to ketoconazole (80%) followed by clotrimazole (62.7%), fluconazole (60%), terbinafine (58%), itraconazole (57%), miconazole (54.2%), amphotericin B (51.4%), voriconazole (34.28%), and caspofungin (25.7%). Nine unique FKS mutations were detected, including S645P (n = 3 isolates), S645F, L644F, S645Y, L688M, E663G, and F641S (one isolate in each). The caspofungin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values before chitosan treatment ranged from 2 to 8 µg/mL and 4 to 16 µg/mL, respectively. However, the MIC and MFC values were decreased after chitosan treatment (0.0625-1 µg/mL) and (0.125-2 µg/mL), respectively. Caspofungin MIC was significantly decreased (p = 0.0007) threefold following chitosan treatment compared with the MIC values before treatment. TEM analysis revealed that 0.5% chitosan disrupted the integrity of the cell surface, causing irregular morphologies and obvious aberrant changes in cell wall thickness in caspofungin-resistant and sensitive Candida isolates. The cell wall thickness of untreated isolates was 0.145 µm in caspofungin-resistant isolate and 0.125 µm in sensitive isolate, while it was significantly lower in chitosan-treated isolates, ranging from 0.05 to 0.08 µm when compared with the cell wall thickness of sensitive isolate (0.03 to 0.06 µm). Moreover, RT-qPCR demonstrated a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the expression levels of histone acetyltransferase genes (GCN5 and ADA2) and FKS gene of caspofungin-resistant Candida species isolates treated with 0.5% chitosan when compared with before treatment (fold change values ranged from 0.001 to 0.0473 for GCN5, 1.028 to 4.856 for ADA2, and 2.713 to 12.38 for FKS gene). A comparison of the expression levels of cell wall-related genes (ADA2 and GCN5) between caspofungin-resistant and -sensitive isolates demonstrated a significant decrease following chitosan treatment (p < 0.001). The antifungal potential of chitosan enhances the efficacy of caspofungin against various caspofungin-resistant Candida species isolates and prevents the development of further antifungal resistance. The results of this study contribute to the progress in repurposing caspofungin and inform a development strategy to enhance its efficacy, appropriate antifungal activity against Candida species, and mitigate resistance. Consequently, chitosan could be used in combination with caspofungin for the treatment of candidiasis.

RESUMEN

Atrioventricular valve parachute deformity is rare and is generally seen in the mitral position, called the parachute mitral valve. It is rare to see it in the tricuspid valve and up to now, there have been approximately 14 cases of parachute abnormalities in tricuspid valves in a literature review. We present here a 21-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with progressive shortness of breath over several months. Despite the absence of chest pain, palpitations, or weight changes, examination revealed a soft, holosystolic murmur at the left lower sternal border. Further investigation through electrocardiogram and echocardiogram identified a rare structural abnormality known as parachute tricuspid valve, resulting in significant tricuspid regurgitation with mild right chamber enlargement. The patient was recommended to go abroad for further management since a cardiothoracic surgeon is not available in our country.

RESUMEN

Acetamiprid (ACP) is a novel neonicotinoid insecticide used for controlling insect pests. Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenol that possesses anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic actions. The current research explores the mechanism of ACP-induced cardiotoxicity and the alleviative effects of RSV. Male rats were allocated to four groups of ten each. Rats were treated daily for 90 days via oral route. Control rats received distilled water, ACP rats received 25 mg acetamiprid/kg, RSV rats received 20 mg resveratrol/kg and ACP + RSV rats received both ACP and RSV. ACP exposure increased serum creatine phosphokinase activity and cardiac troponin level. It also induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by the glutathione reduction, and malondialdehyde elevation, as well as the detrimental histopathological and immunohistochemical changes in the myocardium. Gene expression analysis revealed down-regulation in the mRNA expression of the survival-related genes α7 nAChR, Erk and Bcl-2, and up-regulation in the apoptosis-related genes Jnk, Bax and Caspase-3. Conversely, the concomitant administration of ACP with RSV alleviated most of the aforementioned toxic impacts. It can be concluded that ACP induces cardiotoxicity by dysregulating the mRNA expression of α7 nAChR and its downstream targets. Additionally, RSV is proved to be a promising ameliorative agent against ACP-induced cardiotoxicity.
