RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) is an oral potassium (K+)-lowering therapy for adults with hyperkalemia. HARMONIZE Asia (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03528681) evaluated the efficacy and safety of SZC in Chinese patients with hyperkalemia. METHODS: This Phase III, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study recruited patients with serum K+ (sK+) ≥5.1 mmol/L at 35 sites in China. Patients received SZC 10 g three times daily (TID) for 24 or 48 hours during an open-label initial phase (OLP). Those patients achieving normokalemia (sK+ 3.5-5.0 mmol/L inclusive) entered a 28-day randomized (2:2:1) treatment phase (RTP) and received SZC 5 g, SZC 10 g, or placebo once daily. The primary endpoint was mean sK+ during RTP Days 8 to 29. Secondary endpoints included mean change in sK+ during the OLP, the proportion of patients who achieved normokalemia at the end of the OLP, the proportion that maintained normokalemia during the RTP, and time to recurrence of hyperkalemia. FINDINGS: In total, 270 patients received SZC 10 g TID during the OLP; 256 (94.8%) completed the OLP. During the OLP, mean sK+ decreased by 1.1 mmol/L from baseline (5.9 mmol/L; P < 0.001) and 87.4% of patients achieved normokalemia. During the RTP, SZC 5 g and 10 g reduced mean sK+ versus placebo in a dose-dependent manner (each P < 0.001); least-squares means (95% confidence interval [CI]) sK+ were 4.9 mmol/L (4.7, 5.0), 4.4 mmol/L (4.3, 4.6), and 5.2 mmol/L (5.1, 5.4) for SZC 5 g, 10 g, and placebo, respectively. At RTP end, the proportions of patients who maintained normokalemia were 58.8% (SZC 5 g; odds ratio vs placebo, 2.5 [95% CI: 1.1, 6.1; P = 0.035]), 76.5% (SZC 10 g; odds ratio vs placebo, 6.3 [95% CI: 2.6, 15.3; P < 0.001]), and 36.8% for placebo. Risk of recurrent hyperkalemia was reduced by 61.0% and 84.0% with SZC 5 g and SZC 10 g, respectively, versus placebo (each P < 0.001). During the RTP, the incidence of adverse events was numerically higher with SZC 5 g (50.0% of patients) and 10 g (44.0%) versus placebo (36.0%); driven primarily by peripheral edema and constipation. IMPLICATIONS: Both SZC doses demonstrated clinically relevant and statistically significant, dose-dependent efficacy in managing sK+ levels in Chinese patients with hyperkalemia, compared with placebo. SZC tolerability was broadly aligned with the known safety profile of SZC.

RESUMEN

Herein, a hollow spherical pillar[5]arene-based polymer (P5-AO) adsorbent was synthesized. The P5-AO adsorbent was capable of effectively capturing uranium from simulated seawater (139.5 mg g-1) and real seawater (8.1 mg g-1). We also elucidated the uranium adsorption mechanism of P5-AOvia extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). This study provides a novel direction for the development of uranium capture adsorbents.

RESUMEN

The emulation of tactile sensory nerves to achieve advanced sensory functions in robotics with artificial intelligence is of great interest. However, such devices remain bulky and lack reliable competence to functionalize further synaptic devices with proprioceptive feedback. Here, we report an artificial organic afferent nerve with low operating bias (-0.6 V) achieved by integrating a pressure-activated organic electrochemical synaptic transistor and artificial mechanoreceptors. The dendritic integration function for neurorobotics is achieved to perceive directional movement of object, further reducing the control complexity by exploiting the distributed and parallel networks. An intelligent robot assembled with artificial afferent nerve, coupled with a closed-loop feedback program is demonstrated to rapidly implement slip recognition and prevention actions upon occurrence of object slippage. The spatiotemporal features of tactile patterns are well differentiated with a high recognition accuracy after processing spike-encoded signals with deep learning model. This work represents a breakthrough in mimicking synaptic behaviors, which is essential for next-generation intelligent neurorobotics and low-power biomimetic electronics.

Background: The arteriosclerosis index, defined as the ratio of non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol to high density lipoprotein cholesterol (NHHR), has emerged as a novel biomarker for various diseases. The relationship between NHHR and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) has not been previously examined. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018. NHHR was calculated as (total cholesterol-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Lumbar BMD was calculated to Z scores. Weighted multivariate linear regression, subgroup analysis, interaction analysis, generalized additive model, and two-piecewise linear regression were used. Results: A total of 8,602 participants were included. The negative association between NHHR and lumbar BMD was consistent and significant (Model 1: ß = -0.039, 95% CI: -0.055, -0.023, p < 0.001; Model 2: ß = -0.045, 95% CI: -0.062, -0.027, p < 0.001; Model 3: ß = -0.042, 95% CI: -0.061, -0.023, p < 0.001). The linear relationship between NHHR and lumbar BMD was significantly influenced by body mass index (p for interaction = 0.012) and hypertension (p for interaction = 0.047). Non-linear associations between NHHR and lumbar BMD Z scores were observed in specific populations, including U-shaped, reverse U-shaped, L-shaped, reverse L-shaped, and U-shaped relationships among menopausal females, underweight participants, those with impaired glucose tolerance, those with diabetes mellitus and those taking anti-hyperlipidemic drugs, respectively. Conclusions: NHHR exhibited a negative association with lumbar BMD, but varying across specific populations. These findings suggest that NHHR should be tailored to individual levels to mitigate bone loss through a personalized approach. Individuals at heightened risk of cardiovascular disease should focus on their bone health.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between accelerometer-measured physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) with physical function (PF) among older Chinese women in the community. METHODS: The present study comprised 1,113 community-dwelling older females, with an average age of 65 ± 2 years. We employed a linear regression analysis to investigate the relationship between patterns of PA and SB with PF. PA variables consisted of total PA time, bouted PA time (a continuous PA that lasts equal to or more than 10 min), and sporadic PA time (a continuous PA that lasts less than 10 min). SB variables included total SB time, 30-min bout of SB (a continuous SB that lasts equal to or more than 30 min), and 60-min bout of SB (a continuous SB that lasts equal to or more than 60 min). PF variables comprised handgrip strength (HGS), one-legged stance test with eyes closed (OLSTEC), usual walking speed (UWS), maximum walking speed (MWS) and chair-stand time (CT). To explore the joint effects of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA) and SB on PF, we divided the duration of SB and MVPA participation in older women into different combinations: low MVPA & high SB, low MVPA & low SB, high MVPA & high SB, high MVPA & low SB. RESULTS: The study revealed a significant association between 30-min bout of SB and CT, which remained after adjusting for total MVPA time (P = 0.021). Both total MVPA and bouted MVPA were found to be positively associated with better UWS, MWS, CT, and PF Z-score. When the combination of low MVPA & high SB was used as a reference, the regression coefficients for PF ascended by 1.32 (P < 0.001) in the high MVPA & high SB group and by 1.13 (P < 0.001) in the high MVPA & low SB group. CONCLUSIONS: A significant association was observed between poorer lower limb function and prolonged, uninterrupted SB in older women, rather than with the total SB time. Concurrently, the insufficient engagement in MVPA may also be a crucial factor contributing to poorer PF in older women. Engaging in longer durations and higher intensity of PA, such as bouts of MVPA lasting a minimum of 10 min or longer, may contribute to better PF.

This study is aimed to analyse the risk factors associated with chronic non-healing wound infections, establish a clinical prediction model, and validate its performance. Clinical data were retrospectively collected from 260 patients with chronic non-healing wounds treated in the plastic surgery ward of Shanxi Provincial People's Hospital between January 2022 and December 2023 who met the inclusion criteria. Risk factors were analysed, and a clinical prediction model was constructed using both single and multifactor logistic regression analyses to determine the factors associated with chronic non-healing wound infections. The model's discrimination and calibration were assessed via the concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration curve. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified several independent risk factors for chronic non-healing wound infection: long-term smoking (odds ratio [OR]: 4.122, 95% CI: 3.412-5.312, p < 0.05), history of diabetes (OR: 3.213, 95% CI: 2.867-4.521, p < 0.05), elevated C-reactive protein (OR: 2.981, 95% CI: 2.312-3.579, p < 0.05), elevated procalcitonin (OR: 2.253, 95% CI: 1.893-3.412, p < 0.05) and reduced albumin (OR: 1.892, 95% CI: 1.322-3.112, p < 0.05). The clinical prediction model's C-index was 0.762, with the corrected C-index from internal validation using the bootstrap method being 0.747. The ROC curve indicated an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.762 (95% CI: 0.702-0.822). Both the AUC and C-indexes ranged between 0.7 and 0.9, suggesting moderate-to-good predictive accuracy. The calibration chart demonstrated a good fit between the model's calibration curve and the ideal curve. Long-term smoking, diabetes, elevated C-reactive protein, elevated procalcitonin and reduced albumin are confirmed as independent risk factors for bacterial infection in patients with chronic non-healing wounds. The clinical prediction model based on these factors shows robust performance and substantial predictive value.

BACKGROUND: In some resource-limited regions, the placement of tunneled dialysis catheters (TDC) is often preferred under ultrasound guidance rather than fluoroscopy. This study compared ultrasound-and digital subtraction angiography-guided (DSA)-guided TDC in renal replacement therapy. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all TDC placements performed at our hospital between January 2020 and October 2022. We utilized 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) to balance the demographic and clinical characteristics of the DSA-guided and ultrasound-guided groups. Dialysis prescriptions and actual dialysis completion were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Multivariable logistic regression analyses determined the risk factors for early termination of dialysis. The differences in adverse events, catheter function, and catheter tip position were evaluated between the two groups. RESULTS: The study included 261 patients (142 in the DSA-guided group and 119 in the ultrasound-guided group). After PSM, 91 patients were included in each group, with no significant baseline differences (p > .1). Both groups achieved adequate catheter blood flow and ultrafiltration volumes without deviations from dialysis prescriptions (ICC ≥ 0.75). The DSA-guided group had fewer early dialysis terminations than the ultrasound-guided group (3.3 vs. 12.0%, p = .026). The position of the catheter tip in the right atrium was more consistent in the DSA-guided group (100 vs. 74.2%, p < .001). CONCLUSION: Hemodialysis catheters inserted under DSA guidance exhibited superior performance compared to those inserted under ultrasound guidance, primarily due to more accurate catheter tip positioning. DSA guidance is recommended when ensuring optimal catheter tip placement.

BACKGROUND: Sinistral portal hypertension (SPH) may occurs in patients with pancreatic carcinoma after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) with spleno-mesenterico-portal (S-M-P) cofluence resection. This study aimed to evaluate outcomes with the bifurcated allogeneic vein replacement in the prevention of SPH in pancreatic carcinoma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 81 patients were included. We retrospectively collected clinicopathological data from 66 patients underwent PD with S-M-P confluence resection in our hospital from Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2021, compared the correlation between different venous reconstruction methods using log-rank tests and clinical outcomes through univariate and multivariate analyses. Secondly, we prospectively collected clinical data and outcomes of 15 patients who underwent splenic vein reconstruction from Jan. 2021 to Jan. 2023. RESULTS: In the retrospective study, 43 cases received reconstruction by bifurcated allogeneic vein (Reconstruction group) and 23 cases received simply SV ligation (Ligation group). The preoperative platelet counts and spleen volume were similar between two groups (P>0.05). Nevertheless, at 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after operation, the related indexes of SPH such as platelet count, spleen volume, spleen volume ratio and esophagogastric varices (EGV) grade in Reconstruction group were better than those in Ligation group (P<0.05). 6 months after surgery, the incidence of SPH in Ligation group was significantly higher than in Reconstruction group (36.4% vs. 8.1%, respectively). In the prospective study, the incidence of SPH in patients undergoing SV reconstruction was 6.7% (1/15). CONCLUSION: Without compromising surgical outcomes, reconstruction of the S-M-P confluence by bifurcated allogeneic vein is a better method to avoid SPH in patients with advanced pancreatic carcinoma.

A novel core-shell structured alginate-based hydrogel bead modified by co-gelatinizing with starch and protocatechuic acid (PA), was designed to modulate physical properties of beads, release behavior and antioxidant stability of encapsulated bioactives. Core was fabricated by ionotropic gelation, and its formulation (ratio of sodium alginate/starch) was determined by particle size/starch distribution, texture and bioactive encapsulation capacity of core. Then, coating core with shell-forming solution co-gelatinized with different doses of PA, and subsequently cross-linked with Ca2+ to obtain core-shell structured beads. Surface microstructure, mechanical characteristics, and swelling ratio of beads were affected by concentrations of PA. Besides, core-shell structure containing PA could enhance delivery and sustained release of encapsulated phenolic bioactives during in vitro digestion, and improve their antioxidant potential stability. Furthermore, interaction between PA and polysaccharide components was elucidated by FTIR and TGA. The present information was beneficial for the advancement of functional food materials and bioactive delivery systems.

The development of soft and flexible devices for collection of bioelectrical signals is gaining momentum for wearable and implantable applications. Among these devices, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) stand out due to their low operating voltage and large signal amplification capable of transducing weak biological signals. While liquid electrolytes have demonstrated efficacy in OECTs, they limit its operating temperature and pose challenges for electronic packaging due to potential leakage. Conversely, solid electrolytes offer advantages such as mechanical flexibility, robustness against environmental factors, and ability to bridge the interface between rigid dry electronics systems and soft wet biological tissues. However, few systems have demonstrated generality and compatibility with a wide range of state-of-the-art organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs). This paper introduces a highly stretchable, flexible, biocompatible, self-healable gelatin-based solid-state electrolyte, compatible with both p- and n-type OMIEC channels while maintaining high performance and excellent stability. Furthermore, this nonvolatile electrolyte is stable up to 120 °C and exhibits high ionic conductivity even in dry environment. Additionally, an OECT-based complementary inverter with a record-high normalized-gain of 228 V-1 and a corresponding ultralow static power consumption of 1 nW is demonstrated. These advancements pave the way for versatile applications ranging from bioelectronics to power-efficient implants.

Pea protein isolate (PPI) was used as a carrier matrix to load tannic acid (TA) due to its multiple cavity structures and reaction sites, after that, magnesium ion (M) was further added to form more stable carrier structures. PPI was covalently bound with TA to form TA-PPI complexes in alkaline conditions, then M induced the aggregation of TA-PPI to produce M-TA-PPI complexes. TA mainly interacted with free amino groups and sulfhydryl groups of PPI, thereby decreasing their content in complexes. TA further decreased the α-helix content and increased the ß-sheet and ß-turn content in TA-PPI complexes correspondingly, nevertheless the M would decline these changes in M-TA-PPI complexes. As a result of binding, TA and M jointly increased the average molecular size of complexes. The higher TA addition amount (10-20 mg/g PPI) was conducive to the stronger intramolecular interactions (more hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bonds), gel structure (higher hardness value) and storage modulus in M-TA-PPI gels. Compared with TA-PPI complexes, M-TA-PPI complexes showed higher stability in gastric digestion and higher TA releasement and antioxidant capacity of its digesta in intestinal digestion. This kind of metal-phenolics-protein complexes may have potentials to be a stable and efficient carrier for loading gastric sensitive polyphenols.

BACKGROUND: Bone and soft tissue sarcomas are rare malignancies, and their heterogeneity has limited the development of novel drugs. This study aimed to apply two validated tools to evaluate the clinical benefits of novel drug therapies for sarcoma developed over the last decade. METHODS: The PubMed and Embase databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of systemic therapies for sarcomas published between 2013 and 2023. Each trial was scored according to the European Society of Medical Oncology-Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale version 1.1 (ESMO-MCBS) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology-Value Framework version 2 (ASCO-VF). RESULTS: We included 52 RCTs in this study, of which 17 (32.7%) reported positive results that favored the experimental arm. The ESMO-MCBS grades were determined in 14/17 positive trials, and three of them (21.4%) met the threshold for meaningful clinical benefit. Likewise, ASCO-VF scores were calculated for 11/17 positive trials, and three of them (27.3%) met the threshold for meaningful clinical benefit. Weak correlation (r = 0.38, P = 0.277) and agreement (κ = 0.211, P = 0.490) were observed between the two frameworks. CONCLUSION: Only a few RCTs with positive results have demonstrated substantial patient benefits for bone and soft tissue sarcomas over the past decade.

The global mental health crisis presents a significant challenge to sustainable development, and this crisis is more pronounced in China's rural areas versus urban areas. Alcohol consumption has increased in rural areas with China's economic growth, but the number of studies on the relationship between farmers' alcohol consumption and their mental health is limited. Based on data from the China Labor Force Dynamics Survey (CLDS), this study uses the endogenous switching regression model (ESR) to analyze the influence of alcohol consumption on farmers' mental health. On this basis, the study further conducts a counterfactual analysis to estimate the average treatment effect of alcohol consumption on farmers' mental health. The results show that: (1) There is a significant positive relationship between alcohol consumption and farmers' mental health. Specifically, the mental health index of drinking farmers increases by 19.7 % compared to non-drinking farmers. (2) Heterogeneity analysis shows that alcohol consumption is more beneficial for improving the mental health of male farmers, elderly farmers, and employed farmers. Furthermore, drinking alcohol almost every day, consuming Baijiu, and each drinking consumption ranging from 0 to 100 mL per occasion are more conducive to improving farmers' mental health. These findings have implications for relieving depressive symptomology and improving farmers' mental health in developing countries. The results of this study also provide guidance for addressing the global mental health crisis.

Objective: This study aims to compare the utilization of 3D-CT reconstruction in measuring pedicle outer width (POW) between younger/middle-aged patients (<60 years) and older patients (≥60 years) with thoracolumbar spine fractures (TSF). Methods: We conducted a retrospective study from January 2021 to December 2022, involving a total of 108 patients with TSF. The study population consisted of 62 patients aged ≥60 years (observation group) and 46 patients aged <60 years (control group). We compared the POW on both the right and left sides of the thoracolumbar spine between the two groups. Additionally, we analyzed the POW by gender within each group and calculated the incidence of patients falling below the critical values for arch root puncture (5 mm) and arch root nailing (7 mm) in both groups. Results: There were no statistically significant differences observed in the POW between the two groups on both the left and right sides of each corresponding vertebra (P > 0.05). In the observation group, both male and female patients had significantly smaller POW compared to the control group (P < 0.05). However, no significant difference in POW was observed between the same-sex groups in the L4 to L5 vertebrae (P > 0.05). In the observation group, the POW was less than 5 mm in 9.33% (81/868) of cases and less than 7 mm in 49.88% (433/868) of cases, primarily observed from T11 to L3. In the control group, 4.81% (31/644) of cases had a POW of less than 5 mm, and 13.81% (88/644) had a POW of less than 7 mm. Conclusion: Utilizing preoperative 3D-CT reconstruction to measure POW in patients with TSF not only facilitates the assessment of surgical feasibility but also aids in surgical pathway planning, thus potentially reducing the incidence of postoperative complications.

BACKGROUND: Developing adverse lifestyle behaviors increases the risk of a variety of chronic age-related diseases, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and Alzheimer disease. There is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of eHealth-based multiple health behavior change (MHBC) interventions to manage lifestyle risk behaviors. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this systematic evaluation was to assess the effectiveness of eHealth MHBC interventions in changing ≥2 major lifestyle risk behaviors in people aged ≥50 years. METHODS: The literature search was conducted in 6 electronic databases-PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and SPORTDiscus-from inception to May 1, 2024. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials of eHealth interventions targeting ≥2 of 6 behaviors of interest: alcohol use, smoking, diet, physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, and sleep. RESULTS: A total of 34 articles with 35 studies were included. eHealth-based MHBC interventions significantly increased smoking cessation rates (odds ratio 2.09, 95% CI 1.62-2.70; P<.001), fruit intake (standardized mean difference [SMD] 0.18, 95% CI 0.04-0.32; P=.01), vegetable intake (SMD 0.17, 95% CI 0.05-0.28; P=.003), self-reported total PA (SMD 0.22, 95% CI 0.02-0.43; P=.03), and objectively measured moderate to vigorous PA (SMD 0.25, 95% CI 0.09-0.41; P=.002); in addition, the interventions decreased fat intake (SMD -0.23, 95% CI -0.33 to -0.13; P<.001). No effects were observed for alcohol use, sedentary behavior, or sleep. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to test the robustness of the pooled results. Moreover, the certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) framework. CONCLUSIONS: eHealth-based MHBC interventions may be a promising strategy to increase PA, improve diet, and reduce smoking among older adults. However, the effect sizes were small. Further high-quality, older adult-oriented research is needed to develop eHealth interventions that can change multiple behaviors. While rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for modern technology, their production methods raise concerns for agriculture. Researchers are now exploring ways to control and recycle REEs pollution, aiming to minimize agricultural impacts and potentially even develop methods to utilize these elements for improved crop yields. Regarding this issue, a new type of pillar[5]arene polymer (Pol-P[5]-BTZP) has been designed and synthesized by click reaction to enhance the efficiency of adsorption and recovery of rare earth metals. This polymer incorporates the unique structure of 2,6-di-1,2,3-triazolyl-pyridine. The results of various analyses revealed that Pol-P[5]-BTZP exhibits excellent thermal stability, a high specific surface area, and well-distributed networks of micropores and mesoporous structures. The adsorption capacity of Pol-P[5]-BTZP for Tm3+, a representative REE, was evaluated using the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal adsorption models with a maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) of 127.71 mg/g. Furthermore, the versatility of Pol-P[5]-BTZP in adsorption and recovering various REEs was tested. In addition to its adsorption capabilities, the potential of Pol-P[5]-BTZP for rare earth recovery and reuse was assessed through experiments on the impact of Tm3+ and La3+ on seed germination. These experiments demonstrated the wide-ranging applicability of Pol-P[5]-BTZP in recovering and reusing REEs for green agriculture.

The sulfur (S) cycle is an important biogeochemical cycle with profound implications for both cellular- and ecosystem-level processes by diverse microorganisms. Mangrove sediments are a hotspot of biogeochemical cycling, especially for the S cycle with high concentrations of S compounds. Previous studies have mainly focused on some specific inorganic S cycling processes without paying specific attention to the overall S-cycling communities and processes as well as organic S metabolism. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed the distribution, ecological network and assembly mechanisms of S cycling microbial communities and their changes with sediment depths using metagenome sequencing data. The results showed that the abundance of gene families involved in sulfur oxidation, assimilatory sulfate reduction, and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) cleavage and demethylation decreased with sediment depths, while those involved in S reduction and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) transformation showed an opposite trend. Specifically, glpE, responsible for converting S2O32- to SO32-, showed the highest abundance in the surface sediment and decreased with sediment depths; in contrast, high abundances of dmsA, responsible for converting dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to DMS, were identified and increased with sediment depths. We identified Pseudomonas and Streptomyces as the main S-cycling microorganisms, while Thermococcus could play an import role in microbial network connections in the S-cycling microbial community. Our statistical analysis showed that both taxonomical and functional compositions were generally shaped by stochastic processes, while the functional composition of organic S metabolism showed a transition from stochastic to deterministic processes. This study provides a novel perspective of diversity distribution of S-cycling functions and taxa as well as their potential assembly mechanisms, which has important implications for maintaining mangrove ecosystem functions.

Energy storage devices with high power and energy density are in demand owing to the rapidly growing population, and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising rechargeable energy storage devices. However, there are many issues associated with the development of electrode materials with a high theoretical capacity, which need to be addressed before their commercialization. Extensive research has focused on the modification and structural design of electrode materials, which are usually expensive and sophisticated. Besides, polymer binders are pivotal components for maintaining the structural integrity and stability of electrodes in LIBs. Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) is a commercial binder with superior electrochemical stability, but its poor adhesion, insufficient mechanical properties, and low electronic and ionic conductivity hinder its wide application as a high-capacity electrode material. In this review, we highlight the recent progress in developing different polymeric materials (based on natural polymers and synthetic non-conductive and electronically conductive polymers) as binders for the anodes and cathodes in LIBs. The influence of the mechanical, adhesion, and self-healing properties as well as electronic and ionic conductivity of polymers on the capacity, capacity retention, rate performance and cycling life of batteries is discussed. Firstly, we analyze the failure mechanisms of binders based on the operation principle of lithium-ion batteries, introducing two models of "interface failure" and "degradation failure". More importantly, we propose several binder parameters applicable to most lithium-ion batteries and systematically consider and summarize the relationships between the chemical structure and properties of the binder at the molecular level. Subsequently, we select silicon and sulfur active electrode materials as examples to discuss the design principles of the binder from a molecular structure point of view. Finally, we present our perspectives on the development directions of binders for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. We hope that this review will guide researchers in the further design of novel efficient binders for lithium-ion batteries at the molecular level, especially for high energy density electrode materials.

This study examined the combination of activated carbon and magnetite with calcium peroxide in enhancing the anaerobic digestion (AD) performance of food waste (FW). The individual mechanisms of these two approaches were also clarified. The results indicated that AC/CaO2 achieved the highest specific methane yield of 434.4 mL/g VS, followed by Fe3O4/CaO2 (416.9 mL/g VS). Both were significantly higher than other groups (control, AC, Fe3O4, and CaO2 were 330.1, 341.4, 342.8, and 373.2 mL/g VS, respectively). Additionally, compared to Fe3O4/CaO2, AC/CaO2 further increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby enhancing the hydrolytic acidification process. Simultaneously, the higher ROS levels of Fe3O4/CaO2 and AC/CaO2 promoted the formation of microbial aggregates and established a more robust enzymatic defense system and unique damage repair strategy. The research comparatively analyzed the synergistic mechanism of iron-based and carbon-based conductive materials with CaO2, providing new perspectives for optimizing the AD of FW.
