RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the impact of heating conventional cigarettes with a novel heated tobacco product (HTP) device on biomarkers and cigarette use patterns in Chinese adult smokers unwilling to quit smoking. METHODS: In this pilot randomized controlled trial, 50 eligible participants were allocated to either Control group (smoking conventional cigarettes) or HTP device group (switching to using heated conventional cigarettes by the HTP device). Participants in the HTP device group went through a 2-day run-in period then used heated conventional cigarettes exclusively for 5 days, followed by flexible use for 14 days. Five biomarkers of exposure (BoEs) were measured at baseline and on Day 7. Thirteen biomarkers of biological effect (BoBEs) were measured at baseline and on Day 21. Safety, daily cigarette consumption, craving, withdrawal symptoms, and device acceptability, were assessed. RESULTS: BoE levels decreased by 26.4 % to 71.4% from baseline in the HTP device group, while BoBE levels did not significantly change in either group. In the HTP group, 56% exclusively used heated conventional cigarettes during the flexible use period, experiencing reduced cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while dual users consumed more cigarettes. Mild to moderate device-related reactions were reported in 36% of users. Satisfaction, taste, and harm reduction belief scores averaged 7.4, 6.6, and 8.7 (out of 10), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Switching to heated cigarettes with the HTP device may reduce short-term exposure to smoke toxicants. However, it can lead to increased tobacco use among dual users. Further investigation is needed to confirm these preliminary findings. IMPLICATIONS: This study is the first to evaluate the impact of heating conventional cigarettes with a novel heated tobacco product (HTP) device on health-related biomarkers and cigarette use patterns among Chinese adult smokers. This novel HTP device can directly heat conventional cigarettes without the necessity for specifically designed tobacco products, avoiding potential additive risks of traditional HTPs. If the results of this study could be further verified by randomized controlled clinical trials with larger sample sizes, this novel HTP device could serve as a short-term harm reduction alternative for smokers unwilling to quit.

RESUMEN

Objective: Pertussis cases have increased markedly since 2018 in Guangxi. The aim of this study was to evaluate antibody levels and the infection status of pertussis in the resident population. Method: A total of 10,215 serum samples from residents were collected from August-November 2018 and tested for anti-pertussis IgG and toxin IgG using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Of the collected samples, 1,833 (17.94%) tested positive for anti-pertussis IgG, with the median concentration of 16.06 IU/mL. Antibody level < 10 IU/mL accounted for more than 60% in children under 4 years of age, but declined with age, whereas the percentages of the other three levels (10-40, 40-50, and ≥ 50 IU/mL) increased almost with age ( P < 0.001). Moreover, 7,924 samples were selected for anti-pertussis toxin IgG, of which 653 (8.24%) tested positive (≥ 40 IU/mL) with the median concentration of 5.89 IU/mL, and 204 participants (2.56%) had recent pertussis infection (≥ 100 IU/mL). Among the different age groups, the highest rates of positivity and recent infection were observed at 11-20 years of age, the lowest positivity rate at 5 years of age, and the lowest recent infection rate at 4 years of age ( P < 0.001, P = 0.005, respectively). Conclusion: The survey results showed that all age groups in Guangxi lacked immunity against pertussis, which was one of the main factors contributing to the resurgence of pertussis in 2018. In addition, the prevalence of pertussis is relatively high in Guangxi, and its incidence is seriously underestimated, especially in adolescents and adults.

RESUMEN

What is already known about this topic?: Most Chinese smokers have not accessed professional help due to a lack of sufficient smoking cessation services. Mobile health (mHealth) can mitigate obstacles related to time and transportation, thereby providing effective support for smokers seeking to quit. What is added by this report?: This study offers real-world evidence supporting the effectiveness of mHealth-based comprehensive smoking cessation interventions. The findings indicate that these modalities can significantly enhance abstinence rates, albeit to a lesser extent compared to traditional clinic-based treatments. Adherence to the intervention was identified as a critical factor influencing the effectiveness of smoking cessation strategies. What are the implications for public health practice?: The mHealth-based comprehensive smoking cessation modalities, with or without mailing cessation medications, present a promising approach to enhancing access to and utilization of smoking cessation services. This strategy addresses the significant challenge of limited smoking cessation resources in China.

RESUMEN

Objectives: In this study, we compared the dynamic changes in body composition during XELOX/SOX chemotherapy in patients with gastric cancer. Furthermore, we investigated the potential impact of these changes on the occurrence of toxic side effects. Methods: Patients with gastric cancer who received adjuvant or first-line XELOX/SOX chemotherapy between January 2020 and June 2023 were enrolled. The Brief Conghua Scale was used to assess energy intake, and nutritional management was carried out with reference to the Chinese Guidelines for Nutritional Therapy of Cancer 2020. The NRS 2002 Nutritional Risk Screening Scale, PG-SGA scale, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and dynamic changes in lumbar 3 vertebral skeletal muscle index were compared between baseline and post-chemotherapy in the study. The neutropenia was evaluated using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events V.5.0, developed by the National Institutes of Health. Results: Dynamic follow-up was completed in 39 cases, with a mean follow-up time of 117.62 ± 43.38 days. The incidence of sarcopenia increased significantly after chemotherapy, escalating from 46.2% to 51.3%. After chemotherapy, the mean L3SMI decreased from 36.00 cm2/m2 to 34.99 cm2/m2. Furthermore, when compared to pre-chemotherapy values, the body composition indexes body mass index (BMI), SL3, fat mass free index (FFMI), lean body mass (LBM), and body surface area (BSA) were significantly reduced after chemotherapy. Regardless of baseline or post-chemotherapy status, the incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia was significantly higher in the sarcopenia group than in the non-sarcopenia group. Furthermore, when the skeletal muscle index decreased during chemotherapy, the incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia was significantly higher in both the sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups compared to baseline. When the incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia in the post-chemotherapy sarcopenia group was compared to baseline status, the increase was significantly higher in the sarcopenia group than in the maintenance/increase group. Conclusions: Skeletal muscle mass decreased progressively during XELOX/SOX chemotherapy in gastric cancer patients, followed by a higher incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia.

RESUMEN

Peracetic acid (PAA) is emerging as a versatile agent for generating long-lived and selectively oxidative organic radicals (R-O•). Currently, the conventional transition metal-based activation strategies still suffer from metal ion leaching, undesirable by-products formation, and uncontrolled reactive species production. To address these challenges, we present a method employing BiOI with a unique electron structure as a PAA activator, thereby predominantly generating CH3C(O)O• radicals. The specificity of CH3C(O)O• generation ensured the superior performance of the BiOI/PAA system across a wide pH range (2.0 to 11.0), even in the presence of complex interfering substances such as humic acids, chloride ions, bicarbonate ions, and real-world water matrices. Unlike conventional catalytic oxidative methods, the BiOI/PAA system degrades sulfonamides without producing any toxic by-products. Our findings demonstrate the advantages of CH3C(O)O• in water decontamination and pave the way for the development of eco-friendly water decontaminations based on organic peroxides.

RESUMEN

The Chinese tree shrew ( Tupaia belangeri chinensis) has emerged as a promising model for investigating adrenal steroid synthesis, but it is unclear whether the same cells produce steroid hormones and whether their production is regulated in the same way as in humans. Here, we comprehensively mapped the cell types and pathways of steroid metabolism in the adrenal gland of Chinese tree shrews using single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptome analysis, mass spectrometry, and immunohistochemistry. We compared the transcriptomes of various adrenal cell types across tree shrews, humans, macaques, and mice. Results showed that tree shrew adrenal glands expressed many of the same key enzymes for steroid synthesis as humans, including CYP11B2, CYP11B1, CYB5A, and CHGA. Biochemical analysis confirmed the production of aldosterone, cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone but not dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in the tree shrew adrenal glands. Furthermore, genes in adrenal cell types in tree shrews were correlated with genetic risk factors for polycystic ovary syndrome, primary aldosteronism, hypertension, and related disorders in humans based on genome-wide association studies. Overall, this study suggests that the adrenal glands of Chinese tree shrews may consist of closely related cell populations with functional similarity to those of the human adrenal gland. Our comprehensive results (publicly available at http://gxmujyzmolab.cn:16245/scAGMap/) should facilitate the advancement of this animal model for the investigation of adrenal gland disorders.

RESUMEN

Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3)-based alloys have been extensively employed in energy harvesting and refrigeration applications for decades. However, commercially produced Bi2Te3-based alloys using the zone-melting (ZM) technique often encounter challenges such as insufficient mechanical properties and susceptibility to cracking, particularly in n-type Bi2Te3-based alloys, which severely limit the application scenarios for bismuth telluride devices. In this work, we seek to enhance the mechanical properties of n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 alloys while preserving their thermoelectrical performance by a mixed mechanism of grain refinement and the TiN composite phase-introduced pinning effect. These nanoscale processes, coupled with the addition of TiN, result in a reduction in grain size. The pinning effects of nano-TiN contribute to increased resistance to crack propagation. Finally, the TiN-dispersed Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 samples demonstrate increased hardness, bending strength and compressive strength, reaching 0.98 GPa, 36.3 MPa and 74 MPa. When compared to the ZM ingots, those represent increments of 181%, 60% and 67%, respectively. Moreover, the thermoelectric performance of the TiN-dispersed Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 samples is identical to the ZM ingots. The samples exhibit a peak dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) value of 0.957 at 375 K, with an average ZT value of 0.89 within the 325-450 K temperature range. This work has significantly enhanced mechanical properties, increasing the adaptability and reliability of bismuth telluride devices for various applications, and the multi-effect modulation of mechanical properties demonstrated in this study can be applied to other thermoelectric material systems.

RESUMEN

QED atoms are composed of unstructured and point-like lepton pairs bound together by the electromagnetic force. The smallest and heaviest QED atom is formed by a τ+τ- pair. Currently, the only known atoms of this type are the e+e- and µ+e- atoms, which were discovered 64 years ago and remain the sole examples found thus far. We demonstrate that the Jτ (τ+τ- atom with JPC=1--) atom signal can be observed with a significance larger than 5σ including both statistical and systematic uncertainties, via. the process e+e-→X+Y-Ɇ (X,Y=e,µ,π,K, or ρ, and Ɇ is the missing energy due to unobserved neutrinos) with 1.5ab-1 data taken around the τ pair production threshold. The τ lepton mass can be measured with a precision of 1 keV with the same data sample. This is within one year's running time of the proposed super tau-charm facility in China or super charm-tau factory in Russia.

RESUMEN

To investigate the mechanism of action of aqueous extract of Strychni Semen(SA) on bone destruction in rats with type Ⅱ collagen-induced arthritis(CIA), the SD rats were randomly divided into normal group, model group, low, medium, and high dose(2.85, 5.70, and 11.40 mg·kg~(-1)) groups of SA, and methotrexate group. Except for the normal group, the CIA model was prepared for the other groups. After the second immunization, different doses of SA were given to the low, medium, and high dose groups of SA once a day, and the methotrexate group was given once every three days. 0.3% sodium hydroxymethylcellulose(CMC-Na) was given once a day to the normal and model groups for 28 d. The clinical score of arthritis was evaluated every three days. Micro computed tomography(Micro-CT) method was used to evaluate the degree of bone destruction. Histopathological changes in the joint tissue and the number of osteoclasts in CIA rats were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase(TRAP) staining. The expression of interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß) in the joint tissue of rats was detected by immunohistochemistry. Western blot was used to detect key protein expression in mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B(PI3K/Akt) signaling pathways in the joint tissue of rats. The results showed that different doses of SA were able to improve the red and swollen inflammatory joint and joint deformity in CIA rats to varying degrees, reduce the clinical score, inhibit synovial inflammation, vascular opacification, cartilage erosion, and bone destruction, and reduce the number of TRAP-positive cells in bone tissue. Micro-CT results showed that the SA was able to increase bone mineral density, bone volume fraction, trabecular reduce, and trabecular number and reduce bone surface/bone volume and trabecular separation/spacing. Different doses of SA could down-regulate the protein expression of IL-1ß, p-JNK, p-ERK, p-p38, PI3K, and p-Akt to varying degrees. In conclusion, SA can improve disease severity, attenuate histopathological and imaging changes in joints, and have osteoprotective effects in CIA rats, and its mechanism of action may be related to the inhibition of the overactivation of MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways.

RESUMEN

The MARK2 gene, coding microtubule affinity-regulating kinase or serine/threonine protein kinase, is an important modulator in organism microtubule generation and cell polarity. However, its role in the metamorphosis of insects remains unknown. In this study, we found a conserved miRNA, miR-7-5p, which targets MARK2 to participate in the regulation of the larval-pupal metamorphosis in Galeruca daurica. The dual luciferase reporter assay showed that miR-7-5p interacted with the 3' UTR of MARK2 and repressed its expression. The expression profiling of miR-7-5p and MARK2 displayed an opposite trend during the larval-adult development process. In in-vivo experiments, overexpression of miR-7-5p by injecting miR-7-5p agomir in the final instar larvae down-regulated MARK2 and up-regulated main ecdysone signaling pathway genes including E74, E75, ECR, FTZ-F1 and HR3, which was similar to the results from knockdown of MARK2 by RNAi. In contrast, repression of miR-7-5p by injecting miR-7-5p antagomir obtained opposite effects. Notably, both overexpression and repression of miR-7-5p in the final instar larvae caused abnormal molting and high mortality during the larval-pupal transition, and high mortality during the pupal-adult transition. The 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) injection experiment showed that 20E up-regulated miR-7-5p whereas down-regulated MARK2. This study reveals that the accurate regulation of miRNAs and their target genes is indispensable for insect metamorphosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Galeruca daurica has become a new pest on the Inner Mongolia grasslands since an abrupt outbreak in 2009 caused serious damage. As a pupa indicator during insect metamorphosis, the early response gene of the ecdysone signaling pathway, Broad-Complex (Br-C), plays a vital role in the growth and development of insects. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs which mediate various biological activities, but it is unknown whether and how Br-C is regulated by miRNAs. RESULTS: Temporal expression profiles revealed that miR-285 and Br-C basically displayed an opposite trend during larval-adult development, and Br-C was sharply up-regulated on the last day of final-instar larvae while miR-285 was significantly down-regulated. Both dual-luciferase reporter assay and miRNA-mRNA interaction assay indicated that miR-285 interacts with the coding sequence of Br-C and represses its expression. Not only overexpression but also downexpression of miR-285 led to the failure of larval to pupal to adult metamorphosis. In addition, both overexpression of miR-285 and silence of Br-C inhibited the expression of Br-C and other ecdysone signaling pathway genes, including E74, E75, ECR, FTZ-F1, and HR3. On the contrary, suppressing miR-285 obtained opposite results. Further experiments showed that 20-hydroxyecdysone down-regulated miR-285 and up-regulated Br-C and above-mentioned genes, whereas juvenile hormone alalogue (JHA) resulted in opposite effects. CONCLUSION: Our results reveal that miR-285 is involved in mediating the metamorphosis in G. daurica by targeting Br-C in the ecdysone signaling pathway. miR-285 and its target Br-C could be as a potential target for G. daurica management. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

Aromatic amines (AAs), ubiquitous in industrial applications, pose significant environmental hazards due to their resistance to conventional wastewater treatments. Peracetic acid (PAA)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been proposed as effective strategies for addressing persistent AA contaminants. While the organic radicals generated in these systems are believed to be selective and highly oxidative, acetate residue complicates the evaluation of AA removal efficiency. In this work, we explored transformation pathways of AAs in a representative Co(II)-catalyzed PAA system, revealing five side reactions (i.e. nitrosation, nitration, coupling, dimerization, and acetylation) that yield 17 predominantly stable and toxic by-products. The dominant reactive species was demonstrated as Co-OOC(O)CH3, which hardly facilitated ring-opening reactions. Our findings highlight the potential risks associated with PAA-based AOPs for AA degradation and provide insights into selecting suitable catalytic systems aimed at efficient and by-product-free degradation of pollutants containing aromatic -NH2.

RESUMEN

Forests are composed of various plant species, and rhizosphere soil microbes are driven by root exudates. However, the interplay between root exudates, microbial communities in the rhizosphere soil of canopy trees, understory shrubs, grasses, and their responses to nitrogen (N) deposition remains unclear. Pinus tabulaeformis, Rosa xanthina, and Carex lancifolia were used to investigate root exudates, rhizosphere soil microbial communities, and their responses to N application in forest ecosystem. Root exudate abundances of P. tabulaeformis were significantly higher than that of R. xanthina and C. lancifolia, with carbohydrates dominating P. tabulaeformis and R. xanthina root exudates, fatty acids prevailing in C. lancifolia root exudates. Following N application, root exudate abundances of P. tabulaeformis and R. xanthina initially increased before decreasing, whereas those of C. lancifolia decreased. Microbial number of rhizosphere soil of C. lancifolia was higher than that of P. tabulaeformis and R. xanthina, but there was insignificant variation of rhizosphere soil microbial diversity among plant species. N application exerted promotional and inhibitory impacts on bacterial and fungal numbers, respectively, while bacterial and fungal diversities were increased by N application. Overall, N application had negative effects on root exudates of P. tabulaeformis, inhibiting rhizosphere soil microbial populations. N application suppressed rhizosphere soil microbial populations by increasing root exudates of R. xanthina. Conversely, N application elevated nutrient content in the rhizosphere soil of C. lancifolia, reducing root exudates and minimally promoting microbial populations. This study highlights the importance of understory vegetation in shaping soil microbial communities within forests under N deposition.

RESUMEN

In the realm of wastewater treatment, the power of ferrate (Fe(VI)) and peracetic acid (PAA) as oxidants stands out. But their combined might is where the enhancement truly lies. Their collaborative effect intensifies, but the underlying mechanics, especially across varying pH levels and pollutant types, still lurks in obscurity. Our study delved into the sophisticated oxidation interplay among Fe(VI)-PAA, Fe(VI)-H2O2, and standalone Fe(VI) systems. Notably, at a pH of 9.0, boasting a kinetic constant of ∼0.127 M-1·s-1, the Fe(VI)-PAA system annihilated the pollutant sulfamethoxazole, outpacing its counterparts by a staggering 48.73-fold when compared to the Fe(VI)-H2O2 system and 105.58-fold when using Fe(VI) individually. The behavior of active species─such as the dynamic •OH radicals and high-valent iron species (Fe(IV)/Fe(V))─shifted with pH variations, leading to distinct degradation pathways. Our detailed exploration pinpoints the behaviors of certain species across pH levels from 3.0 to 9.0. In more acidic environments, the •OH species proved indispensable for the system's reactivity. Conversely, as the pH inclined, degradation was increasingly steered by high-valent iron species. This intensive probe demystifies Fe(VI) interactions, deepening our understanding of the capabilities of the Fe(VI)-centered system and guiding us toward cleaner water solutions. Importantly, pH value, often underappreciated, holds the reins in organic wastewater decontamination. Embracing this key player is vital as we strategize for more expansive systems in upcoming ventures.

RESUMEN

Objective: This study sought to develop a WeChat mini-program for smoking cessation behavioral interventions (named the WQ mini-program) and evaluate its usability, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy among Chinese smokers. Methods: The WQ mini-program was designed based on behavioral change theories and clinical practice guidelines, and clinical smoking cessation experts participated in the development process. Fifty Chinese smokers and five software experts were involved in a single-arm trial. Smokers were asked to use the WQ mini-program at least once a day for 4 weeks and to complete a weekly online follow-up questionnaire. Software experts were asked to complete an online follow-up questionnaire after using all functions of the WQ mini-program. Primary outcomes were usability and acceptability of and satisfaction with the mini-program tested by the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS). Self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence (PPA) was used to evaluate its preliminary efficacy for smoking cessation. Optimization suggestions for the mini-program were collected from all participants through an open-ended question at the last follow-up and were analyzed by thematic analysis. Results: The mean SUS and MARS total scores for the WQ mini-program as evaluated by smokers were 82.1 ± 13.8 and 84.5 ± 3.3 and by software experts were 4.21 ± 0.32 and 4.27 ± 0.15, respectively. Most smokers reported being willing to recommend this mini-program to other smokers (85.4%) and would continue to use it (95.8%). The mean satisfaction score for the mini-program was 4.23 ± 0.69 (out of 5 points) among smokers. Self-reported 7-day PPA among smokers at the 4-week follow-up was 50% (25/50). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the WQ mini-program would be a feasible and potentially effective method to encourage Chinese smokers to quit smoking. However, future research is needed to confirm its efficacy through a randomized controlled trial.

RESUMEN

Singlet oxygen (1O2) plays a pivotal role in numerous catalytic oxidation processes utilized in water purification and chemical synthesis. The spin-trapping method based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis is commonly employed for 1O2 detection. However, it is often limited to time-independent acquisition. Recent studies have raised questions about the reliability of the 1O2 trapper, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMP), in various systems. In this study, we introduce a comprehensive, kinetic examination to monitor the spin-trapping process in EPR analysis. The EPR intensity of the trapping product was used as a quantitative measurement to evaluate the concentration of 1O2 in aqueous systems. This in situ kinetic study was successfully applied to a classical photocatalytic system with exceptional accuracy. Furthermore, we demonstrated the feasibility of our approach in more intricate 1O2-driven catalytic oxidation processes for water decontamination and elucidated the molecular mechanism of direct TEMP oxidation. This method can avoid the false-positive results associated with the conventional 2D 1O2 detection techniques, and provide insights into the reaction mechanisms in 1O2-dominated catalytic oxidation processes. This work underscores the necessity of kinetic studies for spin-trapping EPR analysis, presenting an avenue for a comprehensive exploration of the mechanisms governing catalytic oxidation processes.

RESUMEN

What is already known on this topic?: Mobile health interventions have been demonstrated to be effective in aiding smoking cessation among smokers. Nevertheless, research on this topic remains limited in China. What is added by this report?: Following two months of utilizing the services of a comprehensive mobile health (mHealth)-based modality ("Way to Quit" modality) which integrated three online interventions through the WeChat application, 29.1% of participating smokers successfully quit smoking. Participants who used a greater number of online services were more likely to cease smoking. All services were scored highly for satisfaction among smokers. What are the implications for public health practice?: This study presents a practical and feasible method to assist Chinese smokers in quitting smoking. The results of this research suggest a promising direction for enhancing the accessibility and utilization of smoking cessation services. Additionally, these findings serve as a critical reference for addressing the obstacles faced by smoking cessation services in China.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Developing accessible, affordable, and effective approaches to smoking cessation is crucial for tobacco control. Mobile health (mHealth) based interventions have the potential to aid smokers in quitting, and integrating treatments from multiple sources may further enhance their accessibility and effectiveness. As part of our efforts in smoking cessation, we developed a novel behavioral intervention delivery modality for smoking cessation that integrated three interventions using the WeChat app, called the "Way to Quit" modality (WQ modality). It is presented here the protocol for a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness, feasibility, and cost-effectiveness of the WQ modality in Chinese smokers. METHODS: Eligible participants (n = 460) will be recruited via online advertisement in Beijing, China. They will be randomly assigned to receive either quitline-based treatment (QT, n = 230) or WQ modality-based treatment (WQ, n = 230) using a block randomization method. Participants in the QT group will receive telephone-assisted treatment over a four-week period (multi-call quitline protocol), while those in the WQ group will receive integrated interventions based on the WQ modality for four weeks. A four-week supply of nicotine replacement therapy (gums) will be provided to all participants. Participants will be asked to complete phone or online follow-up at 1, 3, 6, and 12-months. At 1-month follow-up, individuals with self-reported smoking abstinence for more than 7 days will be invited to receive an exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) test for biochemical validation. The primary aim is to determine whether the WQ modality is effective in assisting smokers in quitting smoking. The secondary aims are to evaluate the acceptability, satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness of the WQ modality. DISCUSSION: If the WQ modality is determined to be effective, acceptable, and affordable, it will be relatively easy to reach and provide professional cessation treatments to the communities, thus helping to reduce the disparities in smoking cessation services between different regions and socioeconomic groups. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Many smokers have not accessed professional smoking cessation assistance due to limited smoking cessation services. We developed a novel mHealth-based integrated modality for smoking cessation (WeChat + Quitline modality, WQ modality) and applied it to a large public welfare project (China Western-QUIT Program) in western China. This study evaluated the usage, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of the WQ modality in the population of western China. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted between April and August 2021. Smokers or their relatives were recruited through online advertisements and medical staff referrals. After using the services of the WQ modality for one month, the self-reported awareness, use, and satisfaction with each service among the participants were collected by a telephone interview. We also evaluated the self-reported 7-day point prevalence of abstinence (PPA) and quit attempt rate among baseline current smokers. The usage data of each service were downloaded from quitline and WeChat platforms. RESULTS: Of the 17326 people from western China using the WQ modality, the largest number of users was WeChat official account (11173), followed by WeChat mini program (3734), WeChat group (669), and quitline (541 inbound calls, 605 outbound calls). At one month follow-up, over 70% of participants who completed the baseline survey (n=2221) were aware of WeChat-based services, and over 50% used them. However, the awareness rate (11.1%) and utilization rate (0.5%) of quitline were relatively low. The median satisfaction scores across all services were 9 out of 10 points (IQR: 8-9). Among the baseline current smokers (n=1257), self-reported 7-day PPA was 41.8% (526/1257), and another 225 smokers (17.9%) reported making a quit attempt. CONCLUSIONS: The WQ modality could be well used and accepted, and it has great potential to motivate and aid short-term smoking cessation in smokers from western China.

RESUMEN

Bacterial strain Y-6T, isolated from a landfill site in Yiwu, PR China, was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomy approach. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile by means of a single polar flagellum and formed pale beige colonies. Strain Y-6T grew at 4-40 °C (optimal at 30-37 °C), pH 6.5-9.5 (optimal at pH 7.2-8.5) and in the presence of 0.5-10.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimal at 1.0-3.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain Y-6T was a member of the genus Aliidiomarina and closely related to Aliidiomarina taiwanensis MCCC 1A06493T with a 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 98.2 %. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1 ω9c and/or 10-methyl-C16 : 0). Q-8 was the predominant ubiquinone. The major polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, aminoglycophospholipid, aminophospholipid, phospholipid, three glycolipids and two unknown lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 46.6 mol%. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization value between Y-6T and A. taiwanensis MCCC 1A06493T was 18.3 %. Strain Y-6T had an average nucleotide identity value of 74.09 % with A. taiwanensis MCCC 1A06493T. Results from the polyphasic taxonomy study support the conclusion that strain Y-6T represents a novel Aliidiomarina species, for which the name Aliidiomarina quisquiliarum sp.nov. is proposed. The type strain is Y-6T (=MCCC 1K06228T=KCTC 82676T).
