RESUMEN

The manganese-cobalt mixed oxide nanorods were fabricated using a hydrothermal method with different metal precursors (KMnO4 and MnSO4·H2O for MnOx and Co(NO3)2⋅6H2O and CoCl2⋅6H2O for Co3O4). Bamboo-like MnO2⋅Co3O4 (B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S)) was derived from repeated hydrothermal treatments with Co3O4@MnO2 and MnSO4⋅H2O, whereas Co3O4@MnO2 nanorods were derived from hydrothermal treatment with Co3O4 nanorods and KMnO4. The study shows that manganese oxide was tetragonal, while the cobalt oxide was found to be cubic in the crystalline arrangement. Mn surface ions were present in multiple oxidation states (e.g., Mn4+ and Mn3+) and surface oxygen deficiencies. The content of adsorbed oxygen species and reducibility at low temperature declined in the sequence of B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) > Co3O4@MnO2 > MnO2 > Co3O4, matching the changing trend in activity. Among all the samples, B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) showed the preeminent catalytic performance for the oxidation of toluene (T10% = 187°C, T50% = 276°C, and T90% = 339°C). In addition, the B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) sample also exhibited good H2O-, CO2-, and SO2-resistant performance. The good catalytic performance of B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) is due to the high concentration of adsorbed oxygen species and good reducibility at low temperature. Toluene oxidation over B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) proceeds through the adsorption of O2 and toluene to form O*, OH*, and H2C(C6H5)* species, which then react to produce benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and benzaldehyde, ultimately converting to CO2 and H2O. The findings suggest that B-MnO2⋅Co3O4 (S) has promising potential for use as an effective catalyst in practical applications.

BACKGROUND: Combining Doxorubicin (DOX) with sorafenib (SF) is a promising strategy for treating Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). However, strict dosage control is required for both drugs, and there is a lack of target selectivity. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a novel nano-drug delivery system for the combined use of DOX and SF, aiming to reduce their respective dosages, enhance therapeutic efficacy, and improve target selectivity. METHODS: DOX/SF co-loaded liposomes (LPs) were prepared using the thin-film hydration method. The liposomes were modified with 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-ethanolamine (DSPE)- polyethylene glycol (PEG2000), DSPE-PEG1000-cell penetrating peptide TAT, and Glycyrrhetinic Acid (GA). The basic properties of the liposomes were characterized. CCK-8 cell viability assays were conducted using HepG2, MHCC97-H, and PLC cell models, and apoptosis experiments were performed using HepG2 cells to determine if this delivery system could reduce the respective dosages of DOX and SF and enhance HCC cytotoxicity. Liposome uptake experiments were performed using HepG2 cells to validate the target selectivity of this delivery system. RESULTS: A GA/TAT-DOX/SF-LP liposomal nano drug delivery system was successfully constructed, with a particle size of 150 nm, a zeta potential of -7.9 mV, a DOX encapsulation efficiency of 92%, and an SF encapsulation efficiency of 88.7%. Cellular experiments demonstrated that this delivery system reduced the required dosages of DOX and SF, exhibited stronger cytotoxicity against liver cancer cells, and showed better target selectivity. CONCLUSION: A simple and referenceable liposomal nano drug delivery system has been developed for the combined application of DOX and SF in hepatocellular carcinoma treatment.

Reasonable soybean-maize intercropping mode can effectively promote soil phosphorus turnover and crop phosphorus absorption, and reduce phosphorus fertilizer input. To optimize phosphorus (P)-use efficiency in soybean/maize intercropping system, we intercropped two genotypes of soybean with maize to investigate the rhizosphere processes and mechanisms underlying soil biological P fractions and crop P uptake. The results showed that intercropping significantly depleted the rhizosphere soluble inorganic P (CaCl2-P) content in soybean genotype Yuechun 03-3, without impact on the P fractions in the rhizosphere of soybean Essex. Similarly, intercropping significantly increased biomass and P uptake of soybean genotype Yuechun 03-3 by 42.2% and 46.9%, respectively, compared to monoculture. However, it did not affect P uptake and biomass of soybean Essex and maize. Intercropping significantly increased both the total root length and the quantity of root exudates in Yuechun 03-3 by 19.7% and 138.1%, respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between P uptake and total root length in Yuechun 03-3, while a significant negative correlation between soluble inorganic P content and P uptake. In summary, intercropping of soybean and maize exhibited noticeable genotype differences in its impact on soil P fractions and crop P uptake. Intercropping has the potential to improve soybean P uptake and rhizosphere P turnover, mainly by increasing root length and root exudates of P-efficient genotype. The study would provide scientific evidence for optimizing the pairing of soybean and maize varieties in intercropping systems, thereby enhancing phosphorus utilization efficiency and reducing fertilizer inputs.

Context: COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus pneumonia, which is related to abnormal liver function. Thus, it is important to explore the occurrences and causes of abnormal liver function with COVID-19. Methods: We chose 109 patients with COVID-19 in 2020 and studied the relationship between gender, age, basic diseases, antiviral drug treatment, disease classification, and abnormal liver function, and analyzed the causes of abnormal liver function in patients with COVID-19. Results: Among patients, 46 (42.20%) had abnormal liver function at admission; 37 (80.43%) had mild abnormal liver function; and 9 (19.57%) had severe liver function. Compared with other age groups, the abnormal rate of serum ALP in the group younger than 21 years old were the highest (P < 0.05). The abnormal rates and concentrations of serum ALT, AST and γ-GT in the male groups were higher than in female groups (P < 0.05), basic disease group were higher than those in the non-basic disease group (P < 0.05). Serum γ-GT concentration after 1 week of antiviral treatment was higher than that before treatment (P < 0.05). The abnormal rate of ALT and AST at discharge was lower than that after antiviral treatment for 1 week (P < 0.05). Serum TB and AST concentrations at discharge were lower than those before treatment (P < 0.05). Serum AST and γ-GT concentrations in severe/critical type group were higher than those in mild or ordinary type group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: In this study, we found male sex, basic diseases, antiviral drugs, and severe/critical types are related to the occurrence of abnormal liver function in COVID-19 patients.

OBJECTIVE: We explored the use of ultrasonography in determining the minimal transverse diameter of the subglottic airway (MTDSA) for the purpose of choosing an appropriate model of reinforced cuffed endotracheal tube. METHODS: A total of 110 pediatric patients who received general anesthesia and tracheal intubation for selective surgeries at the hospital from February 2019 to February 2022 were chosen. They were then randomly assigned to three groups: 39 in the MTDSA group, 35 in the age formula group, and 36 in the height formula group. We assessed how accurately the appropriate endotracheal tube model was predicted in each group and compared their predictive performance. RESULTS: The age range of the enrolled pediatric patients was 3-6 years old. The ultrasonic measurement method demonstrated a prediction accuracy of 87.18%, while the age formula method and height formula method exhibited lower accuracy rates of 54.29% and 47.22%, respectively. Notably, the ultrasonic measurement method outperformed the other two methods significantly (P < 0.05). In the MTDSA group, 2 patients had their catheters changed during anesthesia, and the proportion of patients who changed their catheters was 5.13%. In the MTDSA group, 6 catheters were replaced, and the frequency of catheter replacement was 15.38%. In contrast, these percentages were much higher in the age formula group, at 31.43% and 45.71%, and in the height formula group, at 36.11% and 52.78%. The latter two groups had significantly higher values than the MTDSA group (P < 0.05). Regarding complications such as hoarseness, laryngeal edema, aspiration, and laryngospasm, the MTDSA group experienced a notably lower total incidence of 7.69% compared to the 37.14% in the age formula group and 41.67% in the height formula group, demonstrating statistical significance (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The ultrasonic measurement technique employed in MTDSA exhibits impressive precision when it comes to forecasting the specific model of a reinforced cuffed endotracheal tube for pediatric patients. This enhanced accuracy contributes significantly to minimizing the need for tube replacements during anesthesia and the associated complications. It holds immense importance in assisting clinicians in selecting the most appropriate pediatric endotracheal tube model for anesthesia induction.

Background: JianPiTongLuo Recipe (JPTL Recipe) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula commonly used in the clinical treatment of colorectal cancer. Clinical studies have found that it can significantly improve the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer. However, its mechanisms of action are not well understood, which has limited its further clinical application. Methods: We investigated the potential mechanisms of action of the JianPiTongLuo (JPTL) Recipe on colorectal cancer (CRC) using a multi-step approach. Initially, network pharmacology and bioinformatics analyses were conducted using databases such as TCMSP, HERB, BATMAN-TCM, and STRING to identify active components of JPTL Recipe and predict their therapeutic targets. Interaction networks and functional enrichment analyses were constructed to hypothesize relevant biological processes and pathways. In vitro studies involved treating human CRC cell lines HCT116, LoVo and SW480 with varying concentrations of JPTL Recipe extract, measuring cell viability with the CCK-8 assay, assessing apoptosis via flow cytometry, and analyzing signaling pathways through Western blotting. To corroborate these findings, in vivo experiments were performed on BALB/c nude mice implanted with HCT116 cells, divided into control, JPTL Recipe-treated, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-treated, and JPTL Recipe combined with 5-FU groups, with tumor growth and histological changes monitored. Mechanistic studies focused on the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, examining the phosphorylation status of key pathway proteins using immunofluorescence and Western blot analyses to elucidate JPTL Recipe 's interaction with pathway activity. Results: We demonstrated that JPTL Recipe effectively inhibits colorectal cancer cell proliferation, anti-apoptotic ability, and exerts synergistic therapeutic effects with fluorouracil. Further analysis revealed that JPTL Recipe affects the activity of colorectal cancer cells by inhibiting the phosphorylation of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Conclusion: In summary, we have discovered and confirmed that the traditional Chinese medicine compound JPTL Recipe can serve as a novel adjuvant therapy for colorectal cancer, offering a new treatment approach for the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

AIM: To construct a novel liposomal drug delivery system co-modified with SP94 and BR2 ligands, encapsulating both the bitter ginseng derivative B21 and doxorubicin (DOX), to achieve superior anti-tumour efficacy and reduced toxic side effects. METHODS: Liposomes were prepared using an organic phase reaction method, with B21 encapsulated in the lipid phase and DOX in the aqueous phase. The liposomes were further modified with SP94 and BR2 peptides. The characterisations, cytotoxicity, and in vitro targeting effects were assessed through various methods including ultraviolet spectrophotometry, high-performance liquid chromatography, nano-size analysis, ultrafiltration centrifugation, dialysis, transmission electron microscopy, flow cytometry, Methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay, confocal laser scanning microscopy, transwell assay, and tumorsphere assay. RESULTS: SP94/BR2-B21/DOX-LP liposomes were spherical with an average diameter of 120.87 ± 1.00 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.223 ± 0.006, and a surface charge of -23.1 ± 1.27 mV. The encapsulation efficiencies for B21 and DOX were greater than 85% and 97% (mg/mg), respectively. The results indicated that SP94/BR2-B21/DOX-LP exhibited enhanced targeting and cytotoxicity compared to single-ligand modified and unmodified liposomes, with the combined encapsulation of B21 and DOX showing synergistic anti-hepatocarcinogenic effects. CONCLUSION: SP94/BR2-B21/DOX-LP liposomes represent a promising targeted drug delivery system for hepatocellular carcinoma, offering improved membrane penetration, enhanced therapeutic efficacy, and reduced systemic toxicity.

PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI) is the first layer of plant defense response that occurs on the plant plasma membrane. Recently, the application of a rhizobacterium, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain PMB05, has been demonstrated to enhance flg22Pst- or harpin-triggered PTI response such as callose deposition. This PTI intensification by PMB05 further contributes to plant disease resistance to different bacterial diseases. Under the demand for rapid and large-scale screening, it has become critical to establish a non-staining technology to identify microbial strains that can enhance PTI responses. Firstly, we confirmed that the expression of the GSL5 gene, which is required for callose synthesis, can be enhanced by PMB05 during PTI activation triggered by flg22 or PopW (a harpin from Ralstonia solanacearum). The promoter region of the GSL5 gene was further cloned and fused to the coding sequence of gfp. The constructed fragments were used to generate transgenic Arabidopsis plants through a plant transformation vector. The transgenic lines of AtGSL5-GFP were obtained. The analysis was performed by infiltrating flg22Pst or PopW in one homozygous line, and the results exhibited that the green fluorescent signals were observed until after 8 h. In addition, the PopW-induced fluorescent signal was significantly enhanced in the co-treatment with PMB05 at 4 h after inoculation. Furthermore, by using AtGSL5-GFP to analyze 13 Bacillus spp. strains, the regulation of PopW-induced fluorescent signal was observed. And, the regulation of these fluorescent signals was similar to that performed by callose staining. More importantly, the Bacillus strains that enhance PopW-induced fluorescent signals would be more effective in reducing the occurrence of bacterial wilt. Taken together, the technique by using AtGSL5-GFP would be a promising platform to screen plant immunity-intensifying microbes to control bacterial wilt.

A Gram-negative, ellipsoidal to short-rod-shaped, motile bacterium was isolated from Beijing's urban air. The isolate exhibited the closest kinship with Noviherbaspirillum aerium 122213-3T, exhibiting 98.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and genomes showed that it clustered closely with N. aerium 122213-3T, thus forming a distinct phylogenetic lineage within the genus Noviherbaspirillum. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain I16B-00201T and N. aerium 122213-3T were 84.6 and 29.4 %, respectively. The respiratory ubiquinone was ubiquinone 8. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were summed feature 3 (C16:1ω6c/C16:1ω7c, 43.3 %), summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c/C18:1ω6c, 15.9 %) and C12:0 (11.0 %). The polyamine profile showed putrescine as the predominant compound. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, unknown lipids and unknown phosphatidylaminolipids. The phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic results consistently supported that strain I16B-00201T represented a novel species of the genus Noviherbaspirillum, for which the name Noviherbaspirillum album sp. nov. is proposed, with I16B-00201T (=CPCC 100848T=KCTC 52095T) designated as the type strain. Its DNA G+C content is 59.4 mol%. Pan-genome analysis indicated that some Noviherbaspirillum species possess diverse nitrogen and aromatic compound metabolism pathways, suggesting their potential value in pollutant treatment.

This study investigated the effects of incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into rice husk ash (RHA) sustainable concrete on its mechanical properties, permeability and microstructure characterisation. Mechanical test results suggested that the addition of 0.10 % multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) yielded optimal results, with increases in the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus of the RHA concrete at 28 days of 7 %, 23.81 %, 17.5 %, and 1.0 %, respectively. However, with further addition of MWCNTs, the mechanical properties ultimately deteriorated. Further, the incorporation of CNTs enhanced the long-term performance of RHA sustainable concrete. The addition of 0.1 % MWCNTs and 15 % RHA yielded a 20 %, 14 %, and 66 % decrease in water absorption, porosity, and chloride diffusion coefficient compared to the mixture solely containing 15 % RHA. Scanning electron microscopy of this mixture revealed the filling and bridging effects of MWCNTs between the hydration products have enhanced the performance of RHA sustainable concrete.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NITRR) holds great promise for purifying wastewater and producing valuable ammonia (NH3). However, the lack of efficient electrocatalysts has impeded the achievement of highly selective NH3 synthesis from the NITRR. In this study, we report the design and synthesis of two polynuclear Co-cluster-based coordination polymers, {[Co2(TCPPDA)(H2O)5]·(H2O)9(DMF)} and {Co1.5(TCPPDA)[(CH3)2NH2]·(H2O)6(DMF)2} (namely, NJUZ-2 and NJUZ-3), which possess distinct coordination motifs with well-defined porosity, high-density catalytic sites, accessible mass transfer channels, and nanoconfined chemical environments. Benefitting from their intriguing multicore metal-organic coordination framework structures, NJUZ-2 and NJUZ-3 exhibit remarkable catalytic activities for the NITRR. At a potential of -0.8 V (vs. RHE) in an H-type cell, they achieve an optimal Faradaic efficiency of approximately 98.5% and high long-term durability for selective NH3 production. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic performance is well maintained even under strongly acidic conditions. When operated under an industrially relevant current density of 469.9 mA cm-2 in a flow cell, a high NH3 yield rate of up to 3370.6 mmol h-1 g-1cat. was observed at -0.5 V (vs. RHE), which is 20.1-fold higher than that obtained in H-type cells under the same conditions. Extensive experimental analyses, in combination with theoretical computations, reveal that the great enhancement of the NITRR activity is attributed to the preferential adsorption of NO3- and the reduction in energy input required for the hydrogenation of *NO3 and *NO2 intermediates.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) exert a strong greenhouse effect and constitute the largest contributor to ozone depletion. Catalytic removal is considered an effective pathway for eliminating low-concentration CFCs under mild conditions. The key issue is the easy deactivation of the catalysts due to their surface fluorination. We herein report a comparative investigation on catalytic dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12) removal in the absence or presence of water over the sulfuric-acid-modified three-dimensionally ordered macroporous vanadia-titania-supported Ru (S-Ru/3DOM VTO) catalysts. The S-Ru/3DOM VTO catalyst exhibited high activity (T90% = 278 °C at space velocity = 40 000 mL g-1 h-1) and good stability within 60 h of on-stream reaction in the presence of 1800 ppm of water due to the improvements in acid site amount and redox ability that promoted the adsorption of CFC-12 and the activation of C-F bonds. Compared with the case under dry conditions, catalytic performance for CFC-12 removal was better over the S-Ru/3DOM VTO catalyst in the presence of water. Water introduction mitigated surface fluorination by the replenishment of hydroxyl groups, inhibited the formation of halogenated byproducts via the surface fluorine species cleaning effect, and promoted the reaction pathway of COX2 (X = Cl/F) → carboxylic acid → CO2.

Three chromomycin derivatives, chromomycins A3 (1, CA3), A5 (2, CA5), and monodeacetylchromomycin A3 (3, MDA-CA3), were identified from the soil-derived Streptomyces sp. CGMCC 26516. A reinvestigation of the structure of CA5 is reported, of which the absolute configuration was unambiguously determined for the first time to be identical with that of CA3 based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data analysis as well as NMR and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compounds 1-3 showed potent cytotoxicity against the non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells (A549, H460, H157-c-FLIP, and H157-LacZ) and down-regulated the protein expression of c-FLIP in A549 cells. The IC50 values of chromomycins in H157-c-FLIP were higher than that in H157-LacZ. Furthermore, si-c-FLIP promoted anti-proliferation effect of chromomycins in NSCLC cells. In nude mice xenograft model, 1 and 2 both showed more potent inhibition on the growth of H157-lacZ xenografts than that of H157-c-FLIP xenografts. These results verify that c-FLIP mediates the anticancer effects of chromomycins in NSCLC.

We report a novel and efficient method for the preparation of diarylmethyl sulfonamide derivatives through visible-light-induced sulfamoylation of para-quinone methides with sulfamoyl chlorides under mild, metal-free conditions. This protocol demonstrates excellent tolerance toward a wide range of functional groups, affording the corresponding products in moderate to high yields. Preliminary mechanism studies revealed that the excited photocatalyst rhodamine 6G* was mainly quenched by para-quinone methides and the generated diarylmethyl radical intermediates then underwent radical-radical cross-coupling with sulfamoyl radicals to yield the diarylmethyl sulfonamides.

Zinc finger protein 180 (ZNF180) is a multifunctional protein that interacts with nucleic acids and regulates various cellular processes; however, the function of ZNF180 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. The present study investigated the role and function of ZNF180 in CRC, and aimed to reveal the underlying molecular mechanism. The results revealed that ZNF180 was downregulated in CRC tissues and was associated with a good prognosis in patients with CRC. Additionally, the expression of ZNF180 was downregulated by methylation in CRC. In vivo and in vitro experiments revealed that ZNF180 overexpression was functionally associated with the inhibition of cell proliferation and the induction of apoptosis. Mechanistically, chromatin immunoprecipitation­PCR and luciferase assays demonstrated that ZNF180 markedly regulated the transcriptional activity of methyltransferase 14, N6­adenosine­methyltransferase non­catalytic subunit (METTL14) by directly binding to and activating its promoter region. Simultaneous overexpression of ZNF180 and knockdown of METTL14 indicated that the reduction of METTL14 could suppress the effects of ZNF180 on the induction of apoptosis. Clinically, the present study observed a significant positive correlation between ZNF180 and METTL14 expression levels, and low expression of ZNF180 and METTL14 predicted a poor prognosis in CRC. Overall, these findings revealed a novel mechanism by which the ZNF180/METTL14 axis may modulate apoptosis and cell proliferation in CRC. This evidence suggests that this axis may serve as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in patients with CRC.

AIM: To construct a novel nano-carrier with dual ligands to achieve superior anti-tumour efficacy and lower toxic side effects. METHODS: Liposomes were prepared by thin film hydration method. Ultraviolet, high performance liquid chromatography, nano-size analyser, ultrafiltration centrifugation, dialysis, transmission electron microscope, flow cytometry, Cell Counting Kit-8, confocal laser scanning microscopy, transwell, and tumorsphere assay were used to study the characterisations, cytotoxicity, and in vitro targeting of dg-Bcan targeting peptide (BTP-7)/pHA-temozolomide (TMZ)/tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP)-Lip. RESULTS: BTP-7/pHA-TMZ/TCPP-Lip was a spheroid with a mean diameters of 143 ± 3.214 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.203 ± 0.025 and a surface charge of -22.8 ± 0.425 mV. The drug loadings (TMZ and TCPP) are 7.40 ± 0.23% and 2.05 ± 0.03% (mg/mg); and the encapsulation efficiencies are 81.43 ± 0.51% and 84.28 ± 1.64% (mg/mg). The results showed that BTP-7/pHA-TMZ/TCPP-Lip presented enhanced targeting and cytotoxicity. CONCLUSION: BTP-7/pHA-TMZ/TCPP-Lip can specifically target the tumour cells to achieve efficient drug delivery, and improve the anti-tumour efficacy and reduces the systemic toxicity.
