Difference in the odor concentrations measured by the triangle odor bag method and dynamic olfactometry.

'The triangle odor bag method', which has been adopted for the offensive odor control law in Japan, and the dynamic olfactometry defined by EN 13725 have been compared. The odor concentration measured by the triangle odor bag method tends to be higher than that of the dynamic olfactometry in the forced choice mode, while well agreed in the Yes/No mode olfactometry when the panel is the same. The difference can be minimized by applying the panel selection criterion of EN13725 to the triangle odor bag method. The European panel selection test is useful to negate the difference in the measurement equipments although the criteria seem to be strict considering the individual threshold data of n-butanol.

The objective of this paper was the description of a case of 68-year old male patient with epithelioid gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome (DIC) as the first and predominant revealed symptom of disease was observed. The final diagnosis was performed using the specific immunohistochemic and ultrastructural assays. The diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties were presented in discussion.

[Cytoenzymatic examinations of peripheral blood granulocytes in overhaul workers of the chemical plant "Organika-Jaworzno" at Jaworzno]. / Badania cytoenzymatyczne granulocytów krwi obwodowej u pracowników brygad remontowych Zakladów Chemicznych "Organika - Azot" w Jaworznie.

In order to evaluate the functions of granulocytes, cytochemical reactions to alkaline and acid phosphatases, beta-glucuronidase, myeloperoxidase and catalase were performed in leukocyte concentrate smears for 45 overhaul workers of a chemical plant producing pesticides. As compared to the control group of 24 unexposed healthy individuals living in the plant area, the alkaline phosphatase and catalase reactions were weaker; the leukocyte count was slightly elevated; the differential white blood cell count did not show any significant changes, only the percentage of monocytes was slightly reduced. The results of our studies can testify a slight impairment of leukocyte function in workers exposed to chemical pesticides.

Threshold concentrations of olfactory sensation of odorants change due to adaptation to polluted atmosphere. The study was aimed at determination of trimethylamine and n-butanol threshold concentrations of olfactory sensation under standard laboratory conditions. The results were analysed from two viewpoints: the role of odour as a warning against chemical hazard, a possibility of using the shift of sensation threshold of appropriately selected reference standards as a measure of discomfort created by odours in working environment.
