BACKGROUND: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of topical RCI001 (RCI) and compare its efficacy with that of 1% prednisolone acetate (PDE) and 5% Lifitegrast in a modified mixed dry eye disease (DED) model. METHODS: The environmental DED model was induced in BALB/c mice in a dry chamber with scopolamine. The eyes of the mice were treated topically with phosphate buffered saline (PBS), PDE, Lifitegrast or RCI twice daily for 1 week. Ocular surface staining (OSS), tear secretion, inflammatory cytokines in the ocular surface and lacrimal gland, and immunofluorescence staining in the conjunctiva and cornea(CC) were assessed. RESULTS: The RCI group demonstrated better improvement of OSS and tear secretion than the PBS group (OSS, PBS: 13.0 ± 1.6, RCI: 9.4 ± 3.0; tear secretion, PBS: 5.0 ± 0.4 mm, RCI: 7.0 ± 0.3 mm, each P < 0.001) and better clinical efficacy than PDE and Lifitegrast groups on Day 7 (improvement rate of OSS, RCI: 32.45%, Lifitegrast: 13.13%, PDE: 12.25%). The RCI group resulted in significantly lower expression of oxidative stress markers in the CC than the PBS group (4-HNE, NOX2, and NOX4 in the conjunctiva; NOX2 in the cornea, each P < 0.05). However, the PDE and Lifitegrast groups did not show significant differences compared with the PBS group. There were no significant differences of inflammatory cytokines in the ocular surface and lacrimal gland between all groups. CONCLUSION: Topical RCI001 showed excellent therapeutic effects in environmental DED models by stimulating tear secretion, modulating oxidative stress and improving corneal epithelial healing compared to 1% PDE and 5% Lifitegrast.

RESUMEN

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, presents primarily with respiratory symptoms. However, children with COVID-19 are usually asymptomatic or mild acute symptoms and also neurological manifestations have also been observed. We report the case of a 7-year-old girl who presented with high fever and altered mental status, leading to a diagnosis of COVID-19 and acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE). The patient received intensive medical care in the intensive care unit and subsequently underwent rehabilitation programs due to neurological functional sequelae. Neurological complications in COVID-19, including ANE, may result from potential viral nerve involvement, cytokine storms, and the blood-brain barrier disruption. Early rehabilitation plays a pivotal role in managing COVID-19-related neurological complications and enhancing patients' functional outcomes. Further research is essential to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms and treatment strategies for neurological manifestations in pediatric COVID-19 patients, particularly those with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in child.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Ultrasonography (US) is recommended for HCC surveillance in high-risk patients but has limited performance in detecting early-stage HCC. We aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of biannual US and annual non-contrast abbreviated magnetic resonance imaging (NC-AMRI) as HCC surveillance modalities in high-risk patients. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter cohort study enrolled participants with an estimated annual risk of HCC greater than 5% between October 2015 and April 2017. Participants underwent six rounds of HCC surveillance at 6-month intervals, with both US and NC-AMRI at rounds 1, 3, and 5, and only US at rounds 2, 4, and 6. The sensitivity, diagnostic yield (DY), and false referral rate (FRR) for HCC detection by US and NC-AMRI were compared. RESULTS: In total, 208 participants underwent 980 US and 516 NC-AMRI examinations during 30 months of follow-up. Among them, 34 HCCs were diagnosed in 31 participants, with 20 (64.5%) classified as very early-stage and 11 (35.5%) as early-stage HCC. The sensitivity of annual NC-AMRI (71.0%, 22/31) was marginally higher than that of biannual US (45.2%, 14/31; p = 0.077). NC-AMRI showed a significantly higher DY than US (4.26% vs. 1.43%, p <0.001), with a similar FRR (2.91% vs. 3.06%, p = 0.885). A simulation of alternating US and NC-AMRI at 6-month intervals yielded a sensitivity of 83.9% (26/31), significantly exceeding that of biannual US (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Annual NC-AMRI showed a marginally higher sensitivity than biannual US for HCC detection in high-risk patients. The DY of annual NC-AMRI was significantly higher than that of biannual US, without increasing the FRR. Thus, alternating US and NC-AMRI at 6-month intervals could be an optimal surveillance strategy for high-risk patients. IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS: Current guidelines permit the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a surveillance tool for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients in whom ultrasonography (US) is inadequate. However, the specific indications, imaging sequences, and intervals for MRI surveillance remain unclear. In our study, we found that annual non-contrast abbreviated MRI exhibited marginally higher sensitivity and significantly better diagnostic yield than biannual US in patients at high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Alternating US and non-contrast abbreviated MRI at 6-month intervals led to significantly improved sensitivity compared to biannual US, making it a potentially optimal surveillance strategy for high-risk patients. As(V)-loaded granular activated carbon was regenerated through electrocoagulation assisted by elution with NaCl. Adsorption of As(V) by activated carbon was highest at pH 6, and subsequent desorption in water was highest at pH 11, followed by pH 3. Lower initial pH improved arsenic removal during electrocoagulation, NaCl concentration was insignificant, but removal increased with current density. Adding Fe(II) before electrocoagulation led to an improved removal efficiency up to a concentration of 30 mg/L. Regeneration of As(V)-loaded activated carbon increased with current density and time up to a maximum of 85%. An increase in NaCl concentration to 6000 mg/L further improved regeneration to 92%. Regeneration at a lower current density only dropped slightly from 54% to 51% when doubling activated carbon concentration, demonstrating excellent scalability. Repeated adsorption-desorption tests were performed, where 81% and 69% regeneration were obtained after four regenerations with NaCl concentrations of 6000 and 750 mg/L, respectively. NaCl concentration in the tested range did not influence electrocoagulation but improved regeneration through elution. The combination of electrocoagulation and elution facilitated a higher regeneration efficiency, meanwhile removing As(V) from the solution through adsorption on iron hydroxide. PRACTITIONER POINTS: As(V)-loaded activated carbon was regenerated by electrocoagulation with elution. Regeneration increased with regeneration time and current density up to 85%. Addition of 6000 mg/L NaCl further increased regeneration to 93%. Regeneration of 82% was achieved after four regenerations. NaCl did not affect electrocoagulation but improved regeneration through elution.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term cumulative survival rate (CSR) of dental implants with micro-threads in the neck over a 10-year follow-up period and to examine the factors influencing the survival rate of dental implants. METHODS: This retrospective study was based on radiographic and dental records. In total, 151 patients received 490 Oneplant® dental implants with an implant neck micro-thread design during 2006-2010 in the Department of Periodontology of Seoul National University Dental Hospital. Implant survival was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to identify the factors influencing implant failure. RESULTS: Ten out of 490 implants (2.04%) failed due to fixture fracture. The CSR of the implants was 97.9%, and no significant difference was observed in the CSR between external- and internal-implant types (98.2% and 97.6%, respectively, P=0.670). In Cox regression analysis, 2-stage surgery significantly increased the risk of implant failure (hazard ratio: 4.769, P=0.039). There were no significant differences in influencing factors, including sex, age, implant diameter, length, fixture type, location, surgical procedure, bone grafting, and restoration type. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this retrospective study, the micro-thread design of the implant neck was found to be favorable for implant survival, with stable clinical outcomes.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether new-onset periodontitis or apical periodontitis in the adjacent teeth affects osseointegrated dental implants in a beagle dog model. METHODS: One control group and 2 experimental groups (periodontitis and apical periodontitis groups) were defined based on the presence of experimental periodontitis or apical periodontitis, with 1 beagle dog randomly assigned to each group. The mandibular second and fourth premolars on both sides of the 3 beagles were extracted. Eight weeks after extraction, 4 bone-level implant fixtures, 2 on both sides of each mandible, were placed in each beagle. Six weeks after implant surgery, healing abutments were connected. After sufficient osseointegration, plaque control was performed in the control group, while periodontitis and apical periodontitis were induced in the experimental groups. The beagles were euthanized for histological analyses 20 weeks after induction of experimental periodontitis. Statistical analyses were performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test with the Bonferroni correction to compare the 3 groups. RESULTS: The implants in the control and apical periodontitis groups were well-maintained, while those in the periodontitis group showed clinical signs of inflammation with bone resorption. The bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area values in the periodontitis group were lower than those in the other groups. The distance between the implant shoulder and the first BIC was significantly greater in the periodontitis group than in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of periodontitis in adjacent teeth can pose a risk to dental implants, potentially resulting in peri-implantitis. However, this was not observed for apical periodontitis. Within the limitations of this study, periodontal care is necessary to reduce the impact of periodontitis in adjacent teeth on osseointegrated implants.

Purpose: RCI001, a novel therapeutic candidate for the treatment of ocular inflammatory diseases, have demonstrated remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in various ocular experimental models. This study was to evaluate the effects of RCI001 on intraocular pressure (IOP) and compare them with those of corticosteroids in experimental mouse models. Methods: Experimental mice were randomly divided into naïve, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), 0.1% dexamethasone (DEX-1), and 1% RCI001 (RCI) groups, and each reagent was pipetted into the right eye of the mouse at 10 µL thrice daily for 5 weeks. In addition, 20 µL of 0.1% dexamethasone was injected subconjunctivally into the right eye once weekly for 5 weeks in the DEX-2 group. The IOP was measured under anesthesia at baseline and twice weekly for 5 weeks. The △IOP (%) was defined as the change in IOP from baseline [△IOP (%) = (IOPweek5-IOPbaseline)/IOPbaseline × 100%]. The anterior segments were clinically and histologically examined. Results: There was no significant increase in IOP and △IOP (%) [values by week 3 (day 21) in any of the groups]. However, IOP and △IOP (%) in the DEX-2 group tended to increase slightly after day 10 compared with baseline. Compared with baseline IOP values, the DEX-1 group showed a statistically significant increase in IOP at weeks 4 and 5, and the DEX-2 group at week 5. The △IOP (%) of the DEX-1 and DEX-2 groups (%) at week 5 were 38.2% ± 5.8% and 38.4 ± 4.6%, respectively. However, the IOP in the RCI group did not increase significantly until week 5. The RCI group did not show notable corneal changes, such as epithelial defects or stromal opacities, at week 5. In addition, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining of corneas in the RCI group revealed healthy corneal epithelial, stromal, and endothelial integrity. Conclusion: Long-term use of RCI001 did not induce significant IOP elevation or ocular surface changes, whereas topical corticosteroids significantly increased the IOP. Therefore, RCI001 may be an effective anti-inflammatory agent with a low risk of drug-induced IOP elevation.

PURPOSE: To compare the corneal epithelial wound healing effects of RCI001, Solcoseryl, and polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) in a rat alkali burn model. METHODS: In 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats, we induced alkali burn using filter paper soaked in 0.2N sodium hydroxide. The rats were then treated with topical 0.5% RCI001, 1.0% RCI001, Solcoseryl, or PDRN twice a day for 2 weeks. Corneal epithelial integrity and epithelial healing rate were measured at day 0, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14. Histologic and immunohistochemistry findings were also assessed. RESULTS: Both the 0.5% and 1.0% RCI001 groups showed significantly more epithelial healing compared to the control group at day 5, 7, 10, and 14 (each p < 0.05). No statistical difference was found between the 0.5% and 1.0% RCI001 groups. Neither the Solcoseryl nor the PDRN groups showed a significant difference from the control. RCI001 treatment resulted in significantly reduced stromal edema, and a trend towards less inflammatory cell infiltration. CONCLUSIONS: Topical application of RCI001 showed enhanced corneal epithelial wound healing in the murine corneal alkali burn model, presumably by suppressing inflammation. Meanwhile, Solcoseryl and PDRN did not show sufficient therapeutic effects compared to RCI001.

BACKGROUND: We sought to investigate whether serum immune and inflammatory parameters can help to predict distant metastasis (DM) in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing curative radiation therapy (RT). METHODS: A total of 76 RT courses were analyzed. The following variables were included in the analysis: systemic inflammation index, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), absolute lymphocyte count, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, albumin, albumin-to-alkaline phosphatase ratio, RT-related parameters, and levels of total protein, hemoglobin, α-fetoprotein, and PIVKA-II. Distant control (DC) and overall survival (OS) rates were calculated and compared. RESULTS: The mean age was 61.4 years, and most patients were men (n = 62, 81.6%). The median RT fraction number and fractional doses were 12 (range, 4-30) and 5 (range, 2-12) Gy, respectively. With a median follow-up of 12 (range, 3.1-56.7) months, the 1-year DC and OS rates were 64.4% and 55.2%, respectively. The development of DM significantly deteriorated OS (p = 0.013). In the multivariate analysis, significant independent prognostic indicators for DC and OS rates were the highest posttreatment PLR (≤235.7 vs. >235.7, p = 0.006) and the lowest posttreatment PNI (≤25.4 vs. >25.4, p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Posttreatment serum PLR might be helpfully used as a predictive biomarker of DM in unresectable HCC patients undergoing RT. Future research is necessary to confirm our findings.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the survival and failure rates of RESTORE® implants over a follow-up period of 10-15 years at a university dental hospital and to investigate the factors affecting the survival rate of these dental implants. METHODS: A total of 247 RESTORE® dental implants with a resorbable blast media (RBM) surface inserted in 86 patients between March 2006 and April 2011 at the Department of Periodontology of Seoul National University Dental Hospital were included. Patients with follow-up periods of less than 10 years were excluded, and data analysis was conducted based on dental records and radiographs. RESULTS: Over a 10- to 15-year period, the cumulative survival rate of the implants was 92.5%. Seventeen implants (6.88%) were explanted due to implant fracture (n=10, 4.05%), peri-implantitis (n=6, 2.43%), and screw fracture (n=1, 0.4%). The results of univariate regression analysis using a Cox proportional hazards model demonstrated that implants placed in male patients (hazard ratio [HR], 4.542; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.305-15.807; P=0.017) and implants that supported removable prostheses (HR, 15.498; 95% CI, 3.105-77.357; P=0.001) showed statistically significant associations with implant failure. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this retrospective study, the RESTORE® dental implant with an RBM surface has a favorable survival rate with stable clinical outcomes.

We study whether deep neural network based algorithm can filter out mammography phantom images that will pass or fail. With 543 phantom images generated from a mammography unit, we created VGG16 based phantom shape scoring models (multi-and binary-class classifiers). Using these models we designed filtering algorithms that can filter failed or passed phantom images. 61 phantom images obtained from two different medical institutions were used for external validation. The performances of the scoring models show an F1-score of 0.69 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.65, 0.72) for multi-class classifiers and an F1-score of 0.93 (95% CI 0.92, 0.95) and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.97 (95% CI 0.96, 0.98) for binary-class classifiers. A total of 42 of the 61 phantom images (69%) were filtered by the filtering algorithms without further need for assessment from a human observer. This study demonstrated the potential to reduce the human workload from mammographic phantom interpretation using the deep neural network based algorithm.

Embryonic stem cells have been a popular research topic in regenerative medicine owing to their pluripotency and applicability. However, due to the difficulty in harvesting them and their low yield efficiency, advanced cell reprogramming technology has been introduced as an alternative. Dental stem cells have entered the spotlight due to their regenerative potential and their ability to be obtained from biological waste generated after dental treatment. Cell reprogramming, a process of reverting mature somatic cells into stem cells, and transdifferentiation, a direct conversion between different cell types without induction of a pluripotent state, have helped overcome the shortcomings of stem cells and raised interest in their regenerative potential. Furthermore, the potential of these cells to return to their original cell types due to their epigenetic memory has reinforced the need to control the epigenetic background for successful management of cellular differentiation. Herein, we discuss all available sources of dental stem cells, the procedures used to obtain these cells, and their ability to differentiate into the desired cells. We also introduce the concepts of cell reprogramming and transdifferentiation in terms of genetics and epigenetics, including DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNA. Finally, we discuss a novel therapeutic avenue for using dental-derived cells as stem cells, and explain cell reprogramming and transdifferentiation, which are used in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

As(V) adsorption on granular activated carbon (GAC) and subsequent desorption in dH2O was modeled using the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetic models. Regeneration was achieved by immersing loaded GAC in NaCl, FeCl3, CaCl2 and MgCl2 aqueous solutions. As(V) detection after desorption was highest for NaCl but subsequent adsorption was lowest. Regeneration was highest in FeCl3 solution of pH 2 followed closely by pH 3, but As(V) precipitation appeared superior at pH 3. Molar ratios of Fe, Ca and Mg to As were tested in the range of 0.75:1 to 12:1 where a logarithmic relation was found between the molar ratio and As(V) desorption as diluted in HNO3 and H2O and subsequent adsorption. Precipitation was nearly complete in FeCl3, limited in MgCl2 at a ratio of 12:1 and not observed in CaCl2. While kinetic values were lower than in previous tests, the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order models could accurately describe desorption in CaCl2 and MgCl2 but not in FeCl3 due to precipitation. Desorption in FeCl3 was most effective in precipitating As(V), being highest at a molar ratio of 6:1, but regeneration was slightly higher at a molar ratio of 12:1.

In an aging society, quality of life improvement is emerging as an important issue, and as implants are accepted as the core of oral rehabilitation treatment, competition for leadership in developing related technologies is intensifying. In this trend, unlike what is evident in the literature, the patent landscape shows the status of industrial-based technology development. A database analysis of a total of 32,237 dental implant patents shows improvements in technology, diverse geographical characteristics, and new advances toward technological convergence in this field. Technologically, dental implant technology has shown a tendency to develop from conventional implant materials and surface treatment technologies to new material technologies making use of substances such as pure zirconium and tantalum or software technologies related to diagnosis and prognosis. Regionally, dental implant technology, which was developed mainly in Europe and the Unites States in the past, is growing explosively in East Asian countries accompanied by the recent growth of the Asian market. In summary, dental implant technology seems to be developing while trying to converge with various technological areas based on the local market environment. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new dental implant material technology that is highly applicable to the development of hybrid information/communication technology and is suitable for a new manufacturing method. Our study may provide important information to help basic and translational researchers and their financial supporters set their research directions in advancing the development of dental implants.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the occurrence and prognosis of dental implant proximity or direct contact with the adjacent tooth and to evaluate the symptoms and complications in both the implant and the adjacent tooth. We then elaborate on treatment modalities and discuss the prevention of this phenomenon. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted based on the dental clinical and radiographic records of 43 patients with implant-tooth proximity of <1.0 mm or direct implant-tooth contact. Multivariate Bayesian logistic regression was performed to examine the influence of individual variables on correcting major clinical variables. RESULTS: In the multivariate regression analysis, the rate of occurrence of tooth symptom decreased by about 95% with every increase of 1.0 mm distance between implant and tooth (odds ratio [OR] = 0.1, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.004-0.680, p = 0.024). In the case of implant-tooth root proximity in the anterior area, the OR of peri-implantitis occurrence was 30.4-fold greater than in posterior sites (OR = 30.4, 95% CI: 1.189-785.914, p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: Implant-tooth root proximity or direct implant-tooth contact is an iatrogenic factor that causes various complications, including devitalization of the adjacent tooth and peri-implantitis. Proactive prevention with surgical stents and intra-operative periapical radiographs is needed. If proximity or contact is found during surgery, repositioning of the fixture to the correct location is recommended in order to maintain peri-implant health and prevent complications.

The ocular surface is continuously exposed to various environmental factors, and innate and adaptive immunity play crucial roles in ocular surface diseases (OSDs). Previously, we have reported that the topical application of RCI001 affords excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in dry eye disease and ocular chemical burn models. In this study, we examined the inhibitory effects of RCI001 on the Rac1 and NLRP3 inflammasomes in vitro and in vivo. Following RCI001 application to RAW264.7 and Swiss 3T3 cells, we measured Rac1 activity using a glutathione-S-transferase (GST) pull-down assay and G-protein activation assay kit. In addition, we quantified the expression of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1ß, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells using ELISA and real-time PCR. In the mouse ocular alkali burn model, RCI001 was administered via eye drops (10 mg/mL, twice daily) for 5 days, and 1% prednisolone acetate (PDE) ophthalmic suspension was used as a positive control. Corneal epithelial integrity (on days 0-5) and histological examinations were performed, and transcript and protein levels of Rac1, NLRP3, caspase-1, and IL-1ß were quantified using real-time PCR and western blotting in corneal tissues collected on days 3 and 5. We observed that RCI001 dose-dependently inhibited Rac1 activity and various inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated murine macrophages. Furthermore, RCI001 restored corneal epithelial integrity more rapidly than corticosteroid treatment in chemically injured corneas. Compared to the saline group, activation of Rac1 and the NLRP3 inflammasome/IL-1ß axis was suppressed in the RCI001 group, especially during the early phase of the ocular alkali burn model. Topical RCI001 suppressed the expression of activated Rac1 and inflammatory cytokines in vitro and rapidly restored the injured cornea by inhibiting activation of Rac1 and the NLRP inflammasome/IL-1ß axis in vivo. Accordingly, RCI001 could be a promising therapeutic agent for treating OSDs.

This study aimed to histologically and histomorphometrically evaluate osseointegration following simultaneous implant placement and maxillary sinus augmentation. Three retrospective human cases are described in which implants were placed at the maxillary sinus site augmented with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and later retrieved due to implant fracture after 5 to 8 years of occlusal loading. The removed implants with bone were processed for histologic evaluation, and bone-to-implant contact (BIC), bone area (BA), and mirror-image bone area (MIBA) were measured. Mature lamella bone was mainly observed, and some unabsorbed grafted bone particles remained in all cases. The measured values of BIC, BA, and MIBA in the three consecutive threads with the highest values were 86.0% to 91.2%, 65.8% to 91.9%, and 73.0% to 90.4%, respectively, and there were no signs of inflammation. Within the limits of this study, these cases demonstrate successful bone formation after maxillary sinus bone augmentation with DBBM and simultaneous implant placement.

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical validity of the modified tunneling technique using minimal soft tissue harvesting and volume-stable collagen matrix in the anterior mandible. METHODS: In total, 27 anterior mandibular teeth and palatal donor sites in 17 patients with ≥1 mm of gingival recession (GR) were analyzed before and after root coverage. For the recipient sites, vertical vestibular incisions were made in the interdental area and a subperiosteal tunnel was created with an elevator. After both sides of the marginal gingiva were tied to one another, a prepared connective tissue graft and volume-stable collagen matrix were inserted through the vestibular vertical incision and were fixed with resorbable suture material. The root coverage results of the recipient site were measured at baseline (T0), 3 weeks (T3), 12 weeks (T12), and the latest visit (Tl). For palatal donor sites, a free gingival graft from a pre-decided area avoiding the main trunk of the greater palatine artery was harvested using a prefabricated surgical template at a depth of 2 mm after de-epithelization using a rotating bur. In each patient, the clinical and volumetric changes at the donor sites between T0 and T3 were measured. RESULTS: During an average follow-up of 14.5 months, teeth with denuded root lengths of 1-3 mm (n=12), 3-6 mm (n=11), and >6 mm (n=2) achieved root coverage of 97.01%±7.65%, 86.70%±5.66%, and 82.53%±1.39%, respectively. Miller classification I (n=12), II (n=10), and III (n=3) teeth showed mean coverage rates of 97.01%±7.65%, 86.91%±5.90%, and 83.19%±1.62%, respectively. At the donor sites, an average defect depth of 1.41 mm (70.5%) recovered in 3 weeks, and the wounds were epithelized completely in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: The modified tunneling technique in this study is a promising treatment modality for overcoming GR in the anterior mandible.
