RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The differential diagnosis of schizophrenia (SZ) versus autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be clinically challenging because accumulating evidence suggests both clinical and biological overlaps between them. The aim of this study was to compare Rorschach profiles between young adults with SZ and those with ASD. METHODS: We evaluated quantitative tendencies on the Rorschach test among 20 patients diagnosed with SZ and 20 diagnosed with ASD. Both groups were matched for age, sex, and intelligence quotient. RESULTS: We found significant differences in six response variables on the Rorschach comprehensive system. Those with SZ had significantly higher scores on D score, adjusted D score (Adj D), developmental quality code reflecting ordinary response (DQo), and form quality minus (FQ -) than those with ASD. In contrast, those with SZ had significantly lower scores on the active and developmental quality code reflecting synthesized response (DQ+) subscales than those with ASD. CONCLUSION: The present findings reveal that individuals with SZ might have more stress tolerance, stronger perception distortions, and simpler and poorer recognition than those with ASD. We suggest that the Rorschach test might be a useful tool for differentiating between SZ and ASD.

RESUMEN

Seafloor massive sulphide deposits are potential resources for base and precious metals (Cu-Pb-Zn ± Ag ± Au), but difficulties in estimating precise reserves and assessing environmental impacts hinder exploration and commercial mining. Here, we report petrological and geochemical properties of sulphide chimneys less than 2 years old that formed where scientific boreholes vented hydrothermal fluids in the Iheya-North field, Okinawa Trough, in East China Sea. One of these infant chimneys, dominated by Cu-Pb-Zn-rich sulphide minerals, grew a height of 15 m within 25 months. Portions of infant chimneys are dominated by sulphate minerals. Some infant chimneys are sulphide-rich similar to high-grade Cu-Pb-Zn bodies on land, albeit with relatively low As and Sb concentrations. The high growth rate reaching the 15 m height within 25 months is attributed to the large hydrothermal vent more than 50 cm in diameter created by the borehole, which induced slow mixing with the ambient seawater and enhanced efficiency of sulphide deposition. These observations suggest the possibility of cultivating seafloor sulphide deposits and even controlling their growth and grades through manipulations of how to mix and quench hydrothermal fluids with the ambient seawater.

RESUMEN

We have developed and tested a functionally integrated in situ analyzer, the IISA-ATP system, for microbial activity assays based on a quantitative determination of the total (particulate and dissolved) ATP in ocean environments. The IISA-ATP utilizes a PDMS-glass hybrid microfluidic device as its core functional element, which can perform cell lysis and total ATP quantification by a luciferin-luciferase bioluminescence assay in situ. Transparent heaters and a temperature sensor fabricated on a glass substrate provide temperature control. As a result of the evaluation using the microfluidic device with ATP standard solutions, the bioluminescence intensity was linearly correlated with 2 × 10(-12) to 2 × 10(-8) M of ATP. A detection limit of 1.1 × 10(-11) M was determined using the completed IISA-ATP system, which includes a miniature pumping module and a control module. As a result of the evaluation using the environmental seawater sample collected from Tokyo Bay, Japan, 2.7 × 10(-10) M of total ATP was successfully determined in the laboratory by the IISA-ATP. The system was operated at a shallow submarine hot spring area in Okinawa, Japan for an in situ trial. The result shows the system was successfully operated in situ and the total ATP was determined to be 3.4 × 10(-10) M.
