RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates in older adults are much higher than those in younger age groups. Given the rapid increase in the proportion of older adults in Korea and the high suicide rate of this age group, it is worth investigating the mechanism of suicidal ideation for older adults. Generally, adverse childhood experiences are positively associated with suicidal ideation; however, it is not fully understood what mediating relationships are linked to the association between these experiences and current suicidal ideation. METHODS: The data from 685 older Korean adults were analyzed utilizing logistic regression, path analyses, and structural equation modeling. Based on our theoretical background and the empirical findings of previous research, we examined three separate models with mental health, physical health, and social relationship mediators. After that, we tested a combined model including all mediators. We also tested another combined model with mediation via mental health moderated by physical health and social relationships. RESULTS: The univariate logistic regression results indicated that childhood adversity was positively associated with suicidal ideation in older adults. However, multivariate logistic regression results demonstrated that the direct effect of childhood adversity became nonsignificant after accounting all variables. Three path models presented significant mediation by depression and social support in the association between childhood adversity and suicidal ideation. However, combined structural equation models demonstrated that only mediation by a latent variable of mental health problems was statistically significant. Social relationships moderated the path from mental health problems to suicidal ideation. CONCLUSIONS: Despite several limitations, this study has clinical implications for the development of effective strategies to mitigate suicidal ideation. In particular, effectively screening the exposure to adverse childhood experiences, early identification and treatment of depressive symptoms can play a crucial role in weakening the association between childhood adversity and suicidal ideation in older adults.

IL17 signaling promotes pancreatic cancer development, yet the cell compartment responsible for the protumorigenic function of IL17 has not been defined. In this article, Castro-Pando and colleagues demonstrate that IL17/IL17 receptor A signaling in the pancreatic epithelium is critical for pancreatic cancer initiation and for establishing immunosuppression, whereas its signaling in the immune compartment is dispensable. This work provides an important mechanistic insight on the role of IL17 signaling and identifies a potential new immune checkpoint as a target in pancreatic cancer. Purpose: This study aimed to assess prognostic factors associated with combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA) and to predict 5-year survival based on these factors. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent definitive hepatectomy from 2006 to 2022 at a single institution was retrospectively analyzed. Inclusion criteria involved a pathologically confirmed diagnosis of cHCC-CCA. Results: A total of 80 patients with diagnosed cHCC-CCA were included in the analysis. The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 15.6 months, while distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), hepatic progression-free survival (HPFS), and overall survival (OS) were 50.8, 21.5, and 85.1 months, respectively. In 52 cases of recurrence, intrahepatic recurrence was the most common initial recurrence (34/52), with distant metastasis in 17 cases. Factors associated with poor DMFS included tumor necrosis, lymphovascular invasion (LVI), perineural invasion and histologic compact type. Postoperative CA19-9, tumor necrosis, LVI, and close/positive margin were associated with poor overall survival. LVI emerged as a key factor affecting both DMFS and OS, with a 5-year OS of 93.3% for patients without LVI compared to 35.8% with LVI. Based on these factors, a nomogram predicting 3-year and 5-year DMFS and OS was developed, demonstrating high concordance with actual survival in the cohort (Harrell C-index 0.809 for OS, 0.801 for DMFS, respectively). Conclusion: The prognosis of cHCC-CCA is notably poor when combined with lymphovascular invasion. Given the significant impact of adverse features, accurate outcome prediction is crucial. Moreover, consideration of adjuvant therapy may be warranted for patients exhibiting poor survival and increased risk of local recurrence or distant metastasis.

The optic nerve head (ONH) is a complex structure wherein the axons of the retinal ganglion cells extrude from the eyeball through three openings: 1) the Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) in the retinal layer, 2) the anterior scleral canal opening in the anterior scleral layer, and 3) the lamina cribrosa (LC). Eyeball expansion during growth induces an offset among openings, since the expansion affects the inner retinal and outer scleral layers differently: the posterior polar retinal structure is preserved by the preferential growth in the equatorial region, whereas no such regional difference is observed in the scleral layer. The various modes and extents of eyeball expansion result in diverse directionality and amount of offset among openings, which causes diverse ONH morphology in adults, especially in myopia. In this review, we summarize the ONH changes that occur during myopic axial elongation. These changes were observed prospectively in our previous studies, wherein LC shift and subsequent offset from the BMO center could be predicted by tracing the central retinal vascular trunk position. This offset induces the formation of γ-zone parapapillary atrophy or externally oblique border tissue. As a presumptive site of glaucomatous damage, the LC/BMO offset may render the LC pores in the opposite direction more vulnerable. To support such speculation, we also summarize the relationship between LC/BMO offset and glaucomatous damage. Indeed, LC/BMO offset is not only the cause of diverse ONH morphology in adults, but is also, potentially, an important clinical marker for assessment of glaucoma.

Ultra-widefield (UWF) retinal imaging stands as a pivotal modality for detecting major eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment. However, UWF exhibits a well-documented limitation in terms of low resolution and artifacts in the macular area, thereby constraining its clinical diagnostic accuracy, particularly for macular diseases like age-related macular degeneration. Conventional supervised super-resolution techniques aim to address this limitation by enhancing the resolution of the macular region through the utilization of meticulously paired and aligned fundus image ground truths. However, obtaining such refined paired ground truths is a formidable challenge. To tackle this issue, we propose an unpaired, degradation-aware, super-resolution technique for enhancing UWF retinal images. Our approach leverages recent advancements in deep learning: specifically, by employing generative adversarial networks and attention mechanisms. Notably, our method excels at enhancing and super-resolving UWF images without relying on paired, clean ground truths. Through extensive experimentation and evaluation, we demonstrate that our approach not only produces visually pleasing results but also establishes state-of-the-art performance in enhancing and super-resolving UWF retinal images. We anticipate that our method will contribute to improving the accuracy of clinical assessments and treatments, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.

Henry's law constant, which describes the proportionality of dissolved gas to partial pressure of free gas in liquid-gas equilibrium systems, can also be applied to mass transport applications. In this work, we investigated an approach for determining the solubility of noble gases in a molten salt liquid utilizing the equilibrium concept of Henry's gas constant. Henry's gas constant is described as a mathematical function dependent on the van der Waals radius of the noble gas and the temperature of the molten salt. The alteration in Gibbs free energy encompasses contributions from both surface and volume energies. Enthalpy and entropy are deduced from these surface and volume energies in the Gibbs free energy formulation. A comparative analysis was conducted between the conventional method and our proposed model. Moreover, useful chemical properties can be determined from examination of surface and volume energies. Our findings provide an accurate and general theory of Gibbs free energy that can be validated experimentally based on the model proposed herein. This work unifies the prediction of Henry gas constant and subsequently the entropy and enthalpy calculation for noble gases in a molten salt solution to a single functional form using van der Waals radius of the gas and temperature of the system. This functional form is then used to perform a multiple regression method to find two parameters corresponding to the surface energy and volume energy. These two parameters are consistent between all combinations of noble gas and molten salt.

INTRODUCTION: Screening for atrial fibrillation (AF) in the general population may help identify individuals at risk, enabling further assessment of risk factors and institution of appropriate treatment. Algorithms deployed on wearable technologies such as smartwatches and fitness bands may be trained to screen for such arrhythmias. However, their performance needs to be assessed for safety and accuracy prior to wide-scale implementation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will assess the ability of the WHOOP strap to detect AF using its WHOOP Arrhythmia Notification Feature (WARN) algorithm in an enriched cohort with a 2:1 distribution of previously diagnosed AF (persistent and paroxysmal) and healthy controls. Recruited participants will collect data for 7 days with the WHOOP wrist-strap and BioTel ePatch (electrocardiography gold-standard). Primary outcome will be participant level sensitivity and specificity of the WARN algorithm in detecting AF in analysable windows compared with the ECG gold-standard. Similar analyses will be performed on an available epoch-level basis as well as comparison of these findings in important subgroups. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study was approved by the ethics board at the study site. Participants will be enrolled after signing an online informed consent document. Updates will be shared via clinicaltrials.gov. The data obtained from the conclusion of this study will be presented in national and international conferences with publication in clinical research journals. INTRODUCTION: Despite the high prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) among the elderly population, the rate of treatment is low due to stigmas and barriers to medical access. Wearable devices such as smartphones and smartwatches can help to screen MDD symptoms earlier in a natural setting while forgoing these concerns. However, previous research using wearable devices has mostly targeted the younger population. By collecting longitudinal data using wearable devices from the elderly population, this research aims to produce prediction algorithms for late-life depression and to develop strategies that strengthen medical access in community care systems. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The current cohort study recruited a subsample of 685 elderly people from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study-Cardiovascular Disease Association Study, a national large cohort established in 2004. The current study has been conducted over a 3-year period to explore the development patterns of late-life depression. Participants have completed three annual face-to-face interviews (baseline, the first follow-up and the second follow-up) and 2 years of app-based surveys and passive sensing data collection. All the data collection will end at the second follow-up interview. The collected self-report, observational and passive sensing data will be primarily analysed by machine learning. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study protocol has been reviewed and approved by the Yonsei University Mirae Campus Institutional Review Board (1041849-2 02 111 SB-180-06) in South Korea. All participants provided written informed consent. The findings of this research will be disseminated by academic publications and conference presentations.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effectiveness of bursal acromial resurfacing (acromiograft) on acromiohumeral distance, subacromial contact area, and pressure in a cadaveric model of massive rotator cuff tear. METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were tested using a customized shoulder testing system. Humeral head translation, subacromial contact pressure, and the subacromial contact area were evaluated across four conditions: (1) intact shoulder; (2) simulated massive rotator cuff tear; (3) 3-mm acromiograft condition; (4) 6-mm acromiograft condition. The acromiografts were simulated using Teflon and a reported technique. The values were measured at 0°, 20°, and 40° abduction and 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° external rotation (ER) for each abduction status. RESULTS: Compared with a massive cuff tear, the 6-mm acromiograft significantly reduced the superior translation of the humeral head at all abduction/ER angles (P<0.05). The 3-mm acromiograft also decreased superior translation of the humeral head compared to massive cuff tear, but not all differences were significant. The 3- and 6-mm acromiografts significantly decreased the subacromial contact pressure and increased the subacromial contact area in almost all positions (P<0.05). The 3-mm acromiograft maintained biomechanical properties similar to the intact condition, whereas the 6-mm acromiograft increased the contact area. CONCLUSIONS: This biomechanical study demonstrated that both 3- and 6- mm acromiografts using Teflon in a cadaveric model of a massive cuff tear resulted in recentering of the superiorly migrated humeral head, increased the subacromial contact area, and decreased the subacromial contact pressure. The 3- mm graft was sufficient for achieving the intended therapeutic effects. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The acromiograft can normalize altered biomechanics and may aid the treatment of massive cuff tears. As grafting the acromion's undersurface is new with limited clinical outcomes, further observation is crucial. Using Teflon instead of ADM allograft for bursal acromial resurfacing could yield different results, requiring careful interpretation.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the outcomes of conservative management in patients with thoracolumbar fractures classified with a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity (TLICS) score of 4 or 5, and to analyze initial imaging findings and clinical risk factors associated with treatment failure. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, patients with thoracolumbar fractures and a TLICS score of 4 or 5, determined through MRI from January 2017 to December 2020, were included. Patients undergoing conservative treatment were categorized into two groups: Group 1 (treatment success) and Group 2 (treatment failure), based on initial and 6-month follow-up outcomes. Clinical data were compared between the two groups. Initial radiological assessments included three kyphosis measurements (Cobb angle, Gardner angle, and sagittal index [SI]), anterior and posterior wall height, and central canal compromise (CC). Additionally, risk factors contributing to treatment failure were analyzed. RESULTS: The conservative treatment group comprised 84 patients (mean age, 60.25 ± 15.53; range 22-85; 42 men), with 57 in Group 1 and 27 in Group 2. Group 2 exhibited a higher proportion of women, older age, and lower bone mass density (p = 0.001-0.005). Initial imaging findings in Group 2 revealed significantly greater values for Cobb angle, SI, and CC (p = 0.001-0.045 or < 0.001; with cutoff values of 18.2, 12.8, and 7.8%, respectively), and lower anterior wall height (p = 0.001), demonstrating good to excellent interobserver agreement (0.72-0.99, p < 0.001). Furthermore, osteoporosis was identified as a significant risk factor (odds ratio = 5.64, p = 0.008). CONCLUSION: Among patients with TLICS scores of 4 or 5, those experiencing conservative treatment failure exhibited unfavorable initial radiological findings, a higher proportion of women, advanced age, and osteoporosis. Additionally, osteoporosis emerged as a significant risk factor for treatment failure.

Aims: Achilles tendon re-rupture (ATRR) poses a significant risk of postoperative complication, even after a successful initial surgical repair. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with Achilles tendon re-rupture following operative fixation. Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed a total of 43,287 patients from national health claims data spanning 2008 to 2018, focusing on patients who underwent surgical treatment for primary Achilles tendon rupture. Short-term ATRR was defined as cases that required revision surgery occurring between six weeks and one year after the initial surgical repair, while omitting cases with simultaneous infection or skin necrosis. Variables such as age, sex, the presence of Achilles tendinopathy, and comorbidities were systematically collected for the analysis. We employed multivariate stepwise logistic regression to identify potential risk factors associated with short-term ATRR. Results: From 2009 to 2018, the short-term re-rupture rate for Achilles tendon surgeries was 2.14%. Risk factors included male sex, younger age, and the presence of Achilles tendinopathy. Conclusion: This large-scale, big-data study reaffirmed known risk factors for short-term Achilles tendon re-rupture, specifically identifying male sex and younger age. Moreover, this study discovered that a prior history of Achilles tendinopathy emerges as an independent risk factor for re-rupture, even following initial operative fixation.

INTRODUCTION: The long-term impact of initial immunogenicity induced by different primary COVID-19 vaccine series remains unclear. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted at 10 tertiary hospitals in Korea from March 2021 to September 2022. Immunogenicity assessments included anti-spike protein antibody (Sab), SARS-CoV-2-specific interferon-gamma releasing assay (IGRA), and multiplex cytokine assays for spike protein-stimulated plasma. Spike proteins derived from wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and alpha variant (Spike1) and beta and gamma variant (Spike2) were utilized. RESULTS: A total of 235 healthcare workers who had received a two-dose primary vaccine series of either ChAdOx1 or BNT162b2, followed by a third booster dose of BNT162b2 (166 in the ChAdOx1/ChAdOx1/BNT162b2 (CCB) group and 69 in the BNT162b2/BNT162b2/BNT162b2 (BBB) group, based on the vaccine series) were included. Following the primary vaccine series, the BBB group exhibited significantly higher increases in Sab levels, IGRA responses, and multiple cytokines (CCL2/MCP-1, CCL3/MIP-1α, CCL4/MIP-1ß, interleukin (IL)-1ra, IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10) compared to the CCB group (all P < 0.05). One month after the third BNT162b2 booster, the CCB group showed Sab levels comparable to those of the BBB group, and both groups exhibited lower levels after six months without breakthrough infections (BIs). However, among those who experienced BA.1/2 BIs after the third booster, Sab levels increased significantly more in the BBB group than in the CCB group (P < 0.001). IGRA responses to both Spike1 and Spike2 proteins were significantly stronger in the BBB group than the CCB group after the third booster, while only the Spike2 response were higher after BIs (P = 0.007). The BBB group exhibited stronger enhancement of T-cell cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, and IL-17A) after BIs than in the CCB group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Differences in immunogenicity induced by the two primary vaccine series persisted, modulated by subsequent booster vaccinations and BIs.

Bovine abortion is a critical problem in the cattle industry. Identifying causes of abortion is key to establishing appropriate herd management and prevention strategies. We used pathology examinations, detection of etiologic agents, and serology to determine the cause of bovine abortions in Korea. We analyzed 360 abortion and stillbirth cases submitted to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency from December 2014 to January 2020. The putative cause of abortion was identified in 140 of 360 (38.9%) cases; 124 of the 140 (88.6%) cases were attributed to infections. The most common etiologic agents detected were bovine viral diarrhea virus (65 of 360; 18.1%), Coxiella burnetii (19 of 360; 5.3%), Leptospira spp. (13 of 360; 3.6%), Listeria monocytogenes (9 of 360; 2.5%), and Neospora caninum (8 of 360; 2.2%). Minor abortifacient pathogens included Brucella abortus (2 of 360; 0.6%), bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (2 of 360; 0.6%), Akabane virus (2 of 360, 0.6%), and bovine ephemeral fever virus (1 of 360; 0.3%). Non-infectious conditions included congenital anomalies (7 of 360; 1.9%), goiter (7 of 360; 1.9%), and vitamin A deficiency (2 of 360; 0.6%). Our diagnostic rate in cases with placenta submitted (42 of 86; 48.8%) was significantly higher than in cases without placenta (98 of 274; 35.8%), which highlights the value of submitting placentas. Our results confirm the status of the large variety of causative agents associated with abortions in cattle in Korea.

Aging-related bone loss is driven by various biological factors, such as imbalanced bone metabolism from decreased osteoblast and increased osteoclast activities. Various transcriptional and post-transcriptional factors increase osteoclast activity with aging; however, studies regarding the post-translational regulators of osteoclast activity are still limited. The ubiquitin E3 ligase Pellino-1 is a well-known post-translational regulator of inflammation. However, how Pellino-1 expression regulation affects osteoclast differentiation remains unclear. This study determined that Pellino-1 levels are reduced in bone marrow monocytes (BMMs) from 40-week-old mice compared to 4-week-old mice. Interestingly, conditional Knockout (cKO) of Pellino-1 in 6-week-old mice resulted in decreased bone mass, reduced body size, and lower weight than in Pellino-1 floxed mice; however, these differences are not observed in 20-week-old mice. The increased number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive cells and serum levels of C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen, a marker of bone resorption, in 6-week-old Pellino-1 cKO mice implied a connection between Pellino-1 and the osteoclast population. Enhanced TRAP activity and upregulation of osteoclast genes in BMMs from the cKO mice indicate that Pellino-1 deletion affects osteoclast differentiation, leading to decreased bone mass and heightened osteoclast activity. Thus, targeting Pellino-1 could be a potential gene therapy for managing and preventing osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify recent trends in the epidemiology of bloodstream infection (BSI)-causing microorganisms among patients with haematologic malignancies (HMs) between 2011 and 2021, and to determine their impact on patient outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective study included 6792 patients with HMs, of whom 1308 (19.3%) developed BSI within 1 y of diagnosis. The incidence of BSI-causing microorganisms was determined, and a propensity score-matched study was performed to identify risk factors for 28-d all-cause mortality in patients with HM. RESULTS: A total of 6792 patients with HMs were enrolled. The cumulative incidence of BSI and neutropenia was significantly higher in the acute myeloid leukaemia and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia groups compared to other groups, and neutropenia and type of HMs were risk factors for the development of BSI. The annual incidence of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS)-BSI decreased significantly (P < 0.001), whereas Klebsiella pneumoniae-BSI increased (P = 0.01). Carbapenem nonsusceptibility rates in K. pneumoniae isolates increased from 0.0% to 76.5% (P < 0.001). BSI caused by K. pneumoniae (adjusted odds ratio 2.17; 95% confidence interval 1.12-4.21) was associated with higher 28-d all-cause mortality compared to that caused by CoNS (adjusted odds ratio 0.86; 95% confidence interval 0.48-1.55). CONCLUSION: The pathogenic spectrum of BSI-causing bacteria in patients with HMs gradually shifted from Gram-positive to Gram-negative, especially from CoNS to K. pneumoniae. Considering that K. pneumoniae-BSI had a significantly higher 28-d mortality rate than CoNS-BSI, this evolving trend could adversely impact the clinical outcomes of patients with HMs.

OBJECTIVES: Our aim in this study was to develop and evaluate a tailored intervention for improving diabetes self-care among people with visual impairment (TID-VI) in South Korea. METHODS: The TID-VI program was designed around the barriers, resources, and perceptual factors to promote diabetes self-care in those with visual impairment (VI). A single-arm pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effects of the intervention. Diabetes self-efficacy, self-care behaviours, depression, health-related quality of life, and clinical outcomes (fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin [A1C], lipids, and blood pressure) were measured before, and up to 2 months after the 12-week intervention. RESULTS: All 14 participants completed TID-VI. Diabetes self-efficacy, diabetes self-care behaviours, depression, and health-related quality of life showed improvement from baseline that was sustained at 2 months. Although high- and low-density lipoprotein also improved, there were no differences in blood glucose, A1C, total cholesterol, or blood pressure at 2 months. CONCLUSIONS: A theory-driven, tailored intervention specific to the needs of adults with VI can produce substantial improvements in patient-reported quality of life and health status outcomes, although the benefits are yet to be confirmed in a controlled study.

BACKGROUND: As the group at high risk for sepsis is increasing with the aging of the population, physical activity (PA), which has beneficial effects on various diseases, needs to be considered as a personalized prevention strategy for sepsis without direct anti-sepsis drug. PURPOSE: To examine the association between the amount of PA (based on intensity, duration, and frequency) and the incidence rates of sepsis and mortality after sepsis. METHODS: This was a large-scale, retrospective, longitudinal cohort study using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service and the biennial general health screening program. The amount of PA self-reported at the time of the health screening was categorized as non-PA, mild (<500 metabolic equivalents [METs]-Min/Week), moderate (500-1000), severe (1000-1500), and extreme (≥1500). The multivariable regression model was adjusted for age, sex, income, body mass index, smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and chronic diseases. RESULTS: From 4,234,415 individuals who underwent a health screening in 2009, 3,929,165 subjects were selected after exclusion for wash-out period and a 1-year lag period, and then observed for the event of sepsis or all-cause death until December 2020. During a median 10.3 years of follow-up, 83,011 incidents of sepsis were detected. The moderate-PA group showed the lowest incidence (1.56/1000 person-years) and risk for sepsis, with an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 0.73 (95% CI, 0.72-0.75, P < 0.001) compared with the non-PA group. The occurrence of sepsis among people aged ≥65 years and ex-smokers were significantly lower in the moderate-PA group (aHR; 0.77, 95% CI; 0.74-0.79; and 0.68, 0.64-0.71, respectively, Ps < 0.001). The long-term all-cause mortality after sepsis was significantly lower in the PA group than in the non-PA group (overall P = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Physical activity is associated with a lower risk of sepsis, especially in elderly people who have the highest incidence of sepsis. The protective effects of aerobic PA on sepsis might need to be incorporated with other interventions in sepsis guidelines through the accumulation of future studies.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has a high incidence in infectious hospitals and communities, highlighting the need for early on-site detection due to its resistance to methicillin antibiotics. The present study introduces a highly sensitive detection system for mecA, a crucial methicillin marker, utilizing an RCA-based isothermal exponential amplification reaction. The G-quadruplex-based isothermal exponential amplification reaction (GQ-EXPAR) method designs probes to establish G-quadruplex secondary structures incorporating thioflavin T for fluorescence. The system, unlike conventional genetic detection methods, works with portable isothermal PCR devices (isoQuark), facilitating on-site detection. A detection limit of 0.1 fmol was demonstrated using synthetic DNA, and effective detection was proven using thermal lysis. The study also validated the detection of targets swabbed from surfaces within bacterial 3D nanostructures using the GQ-EXPAR method. After applying complementary sequences to the padlock probe for the target, the GQ-EXPAR method can be used on various targets. The developed method could facilitate rapid and accurate diagnostics within MRSA strains.

Ankle instability, which can be attributed to either the deltoid or lateral ligamentous complex, may be both a cause and a consequence of ankle fractures. This study aimed to assess postoperative ankle instability in patients with displaced ankle fractures. A total of 54 patients with displaced ankle fractures were included. Malleolar fractures were surgically reduced and fixated, and if necessary, the syndesmosis was stabilized. Concomitant deltoid injuries were left unrepaired. Ankle stress radiographs were taken approximately 25.4 months after surgery, with a standard deviation of 20.5 months. Radiographic measurements included the tibiotalar tilt angle (TT) on varus stress view, anterior translation of the talus (AT) on the anterior drawer view, and the medial clear space (MC) and tibiotalar tilt angle on the valgus stress view. These measurements were compared between the injured and the noninjured contralateral ankle for all patients as well as in a subgroup of 19 patients with concomitant deltoid and syndesmosis injuries. There were no significant differences in Varus TT (p = .675, p = .394), AT (p = .516, p = .967), Valgus MC (p = .190, p = 0.498), and Valgus TT (p = .173, p = .442) between the injured and noninjured ankles in the whole group of patients as well as in the subgroup of patients with concomitant deltoid and syndesmosis injuries. Patients with displaced ankle fractures exhibited radiographically stable ankles postoperatively. Syndesmosis fixation without deltoid ligament repair is a viable treatment option for achieving ankle stability postoperatively in fractures with both ligament injuries.
