RESUMEN

During the process of biological treatment, most microorganisms are encapsulated in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which protect the cell from adverse environments and aid in microbial attachment. Microorganisms utilize extracellular electron transfer (EET) for energy and information interchange with other cells and the outside environment. Understanding the role of steric EPS in EET is critical for studying microbiology and utilizing microorganisms in biogeochemical processes, pollutant transformation, and bioenergy generation. However, the current study shows that understanding the roles of EPS in the EET processes still needs a great deal of research. In view of recent research, this work aims to systematically summarize the production and functional group composition of microbial EPS. Additionally, EET pathways and the role of EPS in EET processes are detailed. Then factors impacting EET processes in EPS are then discussed, with a focus on the spatial structure and composition of EPS, conductive materials and environmental pollution, including antibiotics, pH and minerals. Finally, strategies to enhance EET, as well as current challenges and future prospects are outlined in detail. This review offers novel insights into the roles of EPS in biological electron transport and the application of microorganisms in pollutant transformation.

With an increase of diverse contaminants in the environment, particularly antibiotics, the maintenance and propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are promoted by co-selection mechanisms. ARGs are difficult to degrade, cause long-lasting pollution, and are widely transmitted in aquatic environments. Biochar is frequently used to remove various pollutants during environmental remediation. Thus, this review provides a thorough analysis of the current state of ARGs in the aquatic environment as well as their removal by using biochar. This article summarizes the research and application of biochar and modified biochar to remove ARGs in aquatic environments, in order to refine the following contents: 1) fill gaps in the research on the various ARG behaviors mediated by biochar and some influence factors, 2) further investigate the mechanisms involved in effects of biochar on extracellular ARGs (eARGs) and intracellular ARGs (iARGs) in aquatic environments, including direct and the indirect effects, 3) describe the propagation process and resistance mechanisms of ARGs, 4) propose the challenges and prospects of feasibility of application and subsequent treatment in actual aquatic environment. Here we highlight the most recent research on the use of biochar to remove ARGs from aquatic environments and suggest future directions for optimization, as well as current perspectives to guide future studies on the removal of ARGs from aquatic environments.

In recent years, owing to the overuse and improper handling of antibiotics, soil antibiotic pollution has become increasingly serious and an environmental issue of global concern. It affects the quality and ecological balance of the soil and allows the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which threatens the health of all people. As a promising soil remediation technology, bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are superior to traditional technologies because of their simple operation, self-sustaining operation, easy control characteristics, and use of the metabolic processes of microorganisms and electrochemical redox reactions. Moreover, they effectively remediate antibiotic contaminants in soil. This review explores the application of BES remediation mechanisms in the treatment of antibiotic contamination in soil in detail. The advantages of BES restoration are highlighted, including the effective removal of antibiotics from the soil and the prevention of the spread of ARGs. Additionally, the critical roles played by microbial communities in the remediation process and the primary parameters influencing the remediation effect of BES were clarified. This study explores several strategies to improve the BES repair efficiency, such as adjusting the reactor structure, improving the electrode materials, applying additives, and using coupling systems. Finally, this review discusses the current limitations and future development prospects, and how to improve its performance and promote its practical applications. In summary, this study aimed to provide a reference for better strategies for BES to effectively remediate soil antibiotic contamination.

Oroxylin A (OA), a naturally active O-methylated flavone derived from Scutellaria baicalensis, is regarded as a potential drug with strong anticancer effects. Unfortunately, our understanding of the antineoplastic mechanism of oral exposure to such flavonoids is inadequate. Growing evidence has confirmed the important role of OA in the regulation of oxidative stress- and inflammatory-response-induced tissue injury. However, it remains unknown whether OA is capable of mitigating esophagus cancer (EC) progression and its potential molecular mechanism. Furthermore, the tripartite motif containing 40 (TRIM40) is a ubiquitin ligase that mediates the immune response. The potential molecular function of TRIM40 in regulating EC is largely unknown. We confirmed that OA-triggered oxidative stress markedly upregulates TRIM40. During the OA challenge, increased TRIM40 reduced oxidative stress and promoted the ER stress response. Inversely, deletion of TRIM40 facilitated oxidative stress and blocked cancer cell growth in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, in response to OA treatment, TRIM40 directly interacts with Keap1 and promotes ubiquitin-proteasome degradation, thus leading to the promotion of Nrf2 nuclear translocation and its downstream cascade activation, which increases antioxidant defense and cell survival. TRIM40 expression was positively correlated with Nrf2 expression and negatively associated with Keap1 expression in EC xenografts and human specimens. In addition, high TRIM40 expression correlates with poor patient survival in EC. The findings suggested that oral exposure to OA significantly mitigates EC development by targeting TRIM40 activity. These findings further elucidated the potential role of TRIM40 in EC progression by mediating Keap1 degradation, which could be considered a therapeutic target for the treatment of such a disease.

The demands of human life and industrial activities result in a significant influx of toxic contaminants into aquatic ecosystems. In particular, organic pollutants such as antibiotics and dye molecules, bacteria, and heavy metal ions are represented, posing a severe risk to the health and continued existence of living organisms. The method of removing pollutants from water bodies by utilizing the principle of the piezoelectric effect in combination with chemical catalytic processes is superior to other wastewater purification technologies because it can collect water energy, mechanical energy, etc. to achieve cleanliness and high removal efficiency. Herein, we briefly introduced the piezoelectric mechanisms and then reviewed the latest advances in the design and synthesis of piezoelectric materials, followed by a summary of applications based on the principle of piezoelectric effect to degrade pollutants in water for wastewater purification. Moreover, water purification technologies incorporating the piezoelectric effect, including piezoelectric effect-assisted membrane filtration, activation of persulfate, and battery electrocatalysis are elaborated. Finally, future challenges and research directions for the piezoelectric effect are proposed.

Phthalates (PAEs) are a typical class of endocrine disruptors (EEDs). As one of the most commonly used plasticizers, they have received widespread attention due to their wide application in various countries and high detection rates in various environmental media. To be able to clarify the contamination status of PAEs pollutants in a typical northern cold-temperate urban river, 30 water samples from Yitong River in Changchun City, northern China were collected, during the 2023 dry season (March), normal season (May) and wet season (July). Using these samples, a total of 16 target PAEs are investigated. The resulting total PAEs concentrations are: dry season 408 to 1494 ng/L, wet season 491 to 1299 ng/L, and normal season 341 to 780 ng/L. The average concentration of the 16 PAEs over the three seasons is 773 ng/L. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) have the highest concentrations, ranging from 12 to 403 ng/L and 28-680 ng/L respectively. The ecological risks within the Yitong River Basin are evaluated based on the degree of PAEs contamination. DBP and DEHP pose higher risk assessment levels for algae, crustaceans and fish than the other target PAEs. The accurate determination of PAEs provided baseline data on PAEs for the management of the Yitong River, which is of great significance for the prediction of ecological risk assessment and the development of corresponding control measures, supported further research on PAEs in the cold-temperate zone aquatic environments, and shed light on the seasonal variations of PAEs in the Northeast region in the future. Moreover, considering the bioaccumulation and persistence of PAEs, it is necessary to continue to pay attention to the pollution status of cold-temperate zones rivers and the changes in ecological risks in the future.

Previous studies reported microplastics (MPs), antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). There is still a lack of research progress on the origin, fate, impact and hazards of MPs and ARGs in WWTPs. This paper fills a gap in this regard. In our search, we used "microplastics", "antibiotic resistance genes", and "wastewater treatment plant" as topic terms in Web of Science, checking the returned results for relevance by examining paper titles and abstracts. This study mainly explores the following points: (1) the origins and fate of MPs, antibiotics and ARGs in WWTPs; (2) the mechanisms of action of MPs, antibiotics and ARGs in sludge biochemical pools; (3) the impacts of MPs in WWTPs and the spread of ARGs; (4) and the harm inflicted by MPs and ARGs on the environment and human body. Contaminants in sewage sludge such as MPs, ARGs, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria enter the soil and water. Contaminants can travel through the food chain and thus reach humans, leading to increased illness, hospitalization, and even mortality. This study will enhance our understanding of the mechanisms of action among MPs, antibiotics, ARGs, and the harm they inflict on the human body.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have a certain removal capacity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, but some of them are discharged with effluent into the environment, which can affect the environment. Therefore, to understand the presence, sources, and potential risks of PAHs and their derivatives in WWTPs. Sixteen PAHs, three chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs), three oxidized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs), and three methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MPAHs) were detected in the influent and effluent water of three WWTPs in China. The average concentrations of their influent ∑PAHs, ∑ClPAHs, ∑OPAHs, and ∑MPAHs ranged from 2682.50 to 2774.53 ng/L, 553.26-906.28 ng/L, 415.40-731.56 ng/L, and 534.04-969.83 ng/L, respectively, and the effluent concentrations ranged from 823.28 to 993.37 ng/L, 269.43-489.94 ng/L, 285.93-463.55 ng/L, and 376.25-512.34 ng/L, respectively. The growth of heat transport and industrial energy consumption in the region has a significant impact on the level of PAHs in WWTPs. According to the calculated removal efficiencies of PAHs and their derivatives in the three WWTPs (A, B, and C), the removal rates of PAHs and their derivatives were 69-72%, 62-71%, and 68-73%, respectively, and for the substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SPAHs), the removal rates were 41-49%, 31-40%, and 33-39%, respectively; moreover, the removal rates of PAHs were greater than those of SPAHs in the WWTPs. The results obtained via the ratio method indicated that the main sources of PAHs in the influent of WWTPs were the combustion of coal and biomass, and petroleum contamination was the secondary source. In risk evaluation, there were 5 compounds for which the risk quotient was considered high ecological risk. During chronic disease evaluation, there were 11 compounds with a risk quotient considered to indicate high risk. PAHs and SPAHs with high relative molecular masses in the effluent of WWTPs pose more serious environmental hazards than their PAHs counterparts.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease is a pediatric acute systemic vasculitis that specifically involves the coronary arteries. Timely initiation of immunoglobulin plus aspirin is necessary for diminishing the incidence of coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs). The optimal dose of aspirin, however, remains controversial. The trial aims to evaluate if low-dose aspirin is noninferior to moderate-dose in reducing the risk of CAAs during the initial treatment of Kawasaki disease. METHODS: This is a multi-center, prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint, noninferiority trial to be conducted in China. The planned study duration is from 2023 to 2026. Data will be analyzed according to intention-to-treat principles. Participants are children and adolescents under the age of 18 with Kawasaki disease, recruited from the inpatient units. A sample size of 1,346 participants will provide 80% power with a one-sided significance level of 0.025. Qualifying children will be randomized (1:1) to receive either intravenous immunoglobulin (2 g/kg) plus oral moderate-dose aspirin (30-50 mg·kg-1·d-1) until the patient is afebrile for at least 48 hours, or immunoglobulin plus low-dose aspirin (3-5 mg·kg-1·d-1) as initial treatment. The primary outcome will be the occurrence of CAAs at 8 weeks after immunoglobulin infusion. Independent blinded pediatric cardiologists will assess the primary endpoint using echocardiography. CONCLUSIONS: There is a shortage of consensus on the dose of aspirin therapy for Kawasaki disease due to the lack of evidence. The results of our randomized trial will provide more concrete evidence for the efficacy and adverse events of low- or moderate-dose aspirin in the acute phase of Kawasaki disease. Electrochemical filtration can not only enrich low concentrations of pollutants but also produce reactive oxygen species to interact with toxic pollutants with the assistance of a power supply, making it an effective strategy for drinking water purification. In addition, the application of electrochemical filtration facilitates the reduction of pretreatment procedures and the use of chemicals, which has outstanding potential for maximizing process simplicity and reducing operating costs, enabling the production of safe drinking water in smaller installations. In recent years, the research on electrochemical filtration has gradually increased, but there has been a lack of attention on its application in the removal of low concentrations of pollutants from low conductivity water. In this review, membrane substrates and electrocatalysts used to improve the performance of electrochemical membranes are briefly summarized. Meanwhile, the application prospects of emerging single-atom catalysts in electrochemical filtration are also presented. Thereafter, several electrochemical advanced oxidation processes coupled with membrane filtration are described, and the related working mechanisms and their advantages and shortcomings used in drinking water purification are illustrated. Finally, the roles of electrochemical filtration in drinking water purification are presented, and the main problems and future perspectives of electrochemical filtration in the removal of low concentration pollutants are discussed.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) are prevalent in aquatic environments. Discharge from wastewater treatment plants is an important point source of ARG release into the environment. It has been reported that biological treatment processes may enhance rather than remove ARG because of their presence in sludge. Attenuation of ARG in biotechnological processes has been studied in depth, showing that many microorganisms can secrete complex extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). These EPS can serve as multifunctional elements of microbial communities, involving aspects, such as protection, structure, recognition, adhesion, and physiology. These aspects can influence the interaction between microbial cells and extracellular ARG, as well as the uptake of extracellular ARG by microbial cells, thus changing the transformative capability of extracellular ARG. However, it remains unclear whether EPS can affect horizontal ARG transfer, which is one of the main processes of ARG dissemination. In light of this knowledge gap, this review provides insight into the role of EPS in the transmission of ARGs; furthermore, the mechanism of ARG spread is analyzed, and the molecular compositions and functional properties of EPS are summarized; also, how EPS influence ARG mitigation is addressed, and factors impacting how EPS facilitate ARG during wastewater treatment are summarized. This review provides comprehensive insights into the role of EPS in controlling the transport and fate of ARG during biodegradation processes at the mechanistic level.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the differences in target volumes between preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRIpre) and postoperative MRI (MRIpost) for breast radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) using deformable image registration (DIR). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Seventeen eligible patients who underwent whole-breast irradiation in the prone position after BCS were enrolled. On MRIpre, the gross tumor volume (GTV) was delineated as GTVpre, which was then expanded by 10 mm to represent the preoperative lumpectomy cavity (LC), denoted as LCpre. The LC was expanded to the clinical target volume (CTV) and planning target volume (PTV) on the MRIpre and MRIpost, denoted as CTVpre, CTVpost, PTVpre, and PTVpost, respectively. The MIM software system was used to register the MRIpre and MRIpost using DIR. Differences were evaluated regarding target volume, distance between the centers of mass (dCOM), conformity index (CI), and degree of inclusion (DI). The relationship between CILC /CIPTV and the clinical factors was also assessed. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in LC and PTV volumes between MRIpre and MRIpost (p < 0.0001). LCpre was 0.85 cm3 larger than LCpost, while PTVpre was 29.38 cm3 smaller than PTVpost. The dCOM between LCpre and LCpost was 1.371 cm, while that between PTVpre and PTVpost reduced to 1.348 cm. There were statistically significant increases in CI and DI for LCpost-LCpre and PTVpost-PTVpre (CI = 0.221, 0.470; DI = 0.472, 0.635). No obvious linear correlations (p > 0.05) were found between CI and GTV, primary tumor volume-to-breast volume ratio, distance from the primary tumor to the nipple and chest wall, and body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: Despite using DIR technology, the spatial correspondence of target volumes between MRIpre and MRIpost was suboptimal. Therefore, relying solely on preoperative diagnostic MRI with DIR for postoperative LC delineation is not recommended.

Objective: The objective of this experiment was to investigate the relationship between the circadian rhythm of blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with hypertension. Methods: A total of 500 hypertension patients with documented circadian rhythm of blood pressure were selected for this study. The researchers collected general patient data and fasting blood samples. The following parameters were measured within subgroups of hypertensive patients: age, sex ratio, BMI, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, HDL-C, LDL-C, duration of hypertension, antihypertensive drug usage, and statin intake. Results: The results of the study showed that LVH hypertension had a significantly higher proportion of grade 3 hypertension compared to non-LVH hypertension (P < .001). Additionally, LVH hypertension displayed higher mean systolic blood pressure levels over a 24-hour period (P = .002), during daytime (P = .029), and during nighttime (P < .001). The 24-hour pulse pressure (P < .001) and pulse pressure index (P = 0.001) were also significantly higher in patients with LVH hypertension. Furthermore, the rate of blood pressure decline at night was significantly lower in the LVH hypertension group compared to the control group (P < .001). B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels (P = .034) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) (P < .001) were significantly higher in patients with LVH hypertension compared to non-LVH patients. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest a close association between hypertensive LVH and the weakening or disappearance of the circadian rhythm of blood pressure. It was also observed that the level of blood pressure classification and plasma BNP levels were increased in patients with LVH hypertension.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of ammidin on hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) injury in primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes by observing the role of ferroptosis in the process of H/R injury, and to verify its target and regulatory signaling pathways. METHODS: The network pharmacology analysis was used to predict the biological processes, core targets and related signaling pathways of Angelica dahurica in the treatment of ferroptosis. Cell viability was assessed using live cell imaging and cell counting kit-8. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) content were determined to assess the level of ferroptosis. Western blotting was performed to measure protein expression. RESULTS: Network pharmacology predicted that Acyl-CoA synthetase long chain family member 4 (ACSL4) was highly associated with myocardial H/R injury in the intersection of Angelica dahurica and ferroptosis. The top three active components of Angelica dahurica were found to be mandenol, alloisoimperatorin and ammidin, among which ammidin was found to have the strongest binding to the target proteins of the ACSL4/AMPK/mTOR pathway. H/R reduced the viability of cardiomyocytes, while the inhibition of ferroptosis by ferrostatin-1 alleviated the H/R-induced inhibition of cardiomyocyte viability. This was evidenced by the increased cell viability, SOD release, MMP level and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) protein expression, as well as the decreased LDH and MDA release and ROS production and ACSL4 protein expression (P < 0.05). To verify the existence of ferroptosis in myocardial hypoxia/reoxygenation injury. In addition, ammidin increased cell viability and GPX4 protein expression (P < 0.05), decreased ROS generation, and MDA and MTT expression (P < 0.05), then inhibited ferroptosis, and finally alleviated myocardial H/R injury by regulating the ACSL4/AMPK signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Network pharmacology was used to predict the correlation between ammidin and ferroptosis following myocardial H/R injury. It was demonstrated that ammidin may regulate ferroptosis by inhibiting the ACSL4/AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway and reduce H/R injury in cardiomyocytes.

After aging, the adhesiveness of asphalt deteriorates, leading to a reduction in the durability of asphalt mixtures and affecting the service life of asphalt pavements. To enhance the anti-aging performance of asphalt, this study employed the method of melt blending to prepare three types of modified asphalt: graphene/SBS modified asphalt (G/SBSMA), crumb rubber/SBS modified asphalt (CR/SBSMA), and petroleum resin/SBS modified asphalt (PR/SBSMA). Different dosages of the three types of modified asphalt were tested for changes in conventional performance indicators. The optimal dosages of graphene, crumb rubber, and C9 petroleum resin were determined to be 2%, 15%, and 5%, respectively. Based on the theory of surface free energy, the effects of anti-aging agents on the microscopic properties of SBS modified asphalt before and after aging were analyzed using the three-liquid method. The mechanisms of strength attenuation at the asphalt-aggregate interface under water exposure and aging were revealed. The results showed that with the increase of aging gradient, the asphalt-aggregate biphasic system became more active. The cohesive energy and peel energy of SBS modified asphalt increased continuously, while the adhesive energy decreased continuously, leading to a decrease in the energy ratio parameter. Resin-based anti-aging agents exhibited the most significant improvement in asphalt adhesion performance, while graphene demonstrated a more stable enhancement in asphalt's water stability during the aging stage.

The integration of iron-based materials and anaerobic microbial consortia has been extensively studied owing to its potential to enhance pollutant degradation. However, few studies have compared how different iron materials enhance the dechlorination of chlorophenols in coupled microbial systems. This study systematically compared the combined performances of microbial community (MC) and iron materials (Fe0/FeS2 +MC, S-nZVI+MC, n-ZVI+MC, and nFe/Ni+MC) for the dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) as one representative of chlorophenols. DCP dechlorination rate was significantly higher in Fe0/FeS2 +MC and S-nZVI+MC (1.92 and 1.67 times, with no significant difference between two groups) than in nZVI+MC and nFe/Ni+MC (1.29 and 1.25 times, with no significant difference between two groups). Fe0/FeS2 had better performance for the reductive dechlorination process as compared with other three iron-based materials via the consumption of any trace amount of oxygen in anoxic condition and accelerated electron transfer. On the other hand, nFe/Ni could induce different dechlorinating bacteria as compared to other iron materials. The enhanced microbial dechlorination was mainly due to some putative dechlorinating bacteria (Pseudomonas, Azotobacter, Propionibacterium), and due to improved electron transfer of sulfidated iron particles. Therefore, Fe0/FeS2 as a biocompatible as well as low-cost sulfidated material can be a good alternative for possible engineering applications in groundwater remediation.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and substituted PAHs (SPAHs) are persistent organic pollutants prevalent globally, and SPAHs have received widespread attention in recent years due to their stronger toxicity and carcinogenicity compared to PAHs. There is a lack of systematic examination of PAHs and their derivatives in watersheds. Thus, to clarify the current status, possible sources, and potential risks of PAHs and their derivatives in watersheds, a study was conducted on Yitong River in China. The results showed that the concentrations of ∑PAHs, ∑OPAHs, and ∑NPAHs ranged from 297.9-1158.3 ng/L, 281.1-587.2 ng/L, and 65.7-269.1 ng/L, respectively. Diagnostic ratio analysis showed that the PAHs were mainly derived from petroleum sources, agricultural waste, and coal combustion. Nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) were mainly derived from liquid combustion sources, and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) were derived mainly from petroleum source emissions and atmospheric deposition. The exposure risk model of PAHs revealed that 86% of the studied sites would pose carcinogenic risks after dermal contact. The contaminant causing a major carcinogenic risk was DahA, and none of the sites produced non-carcinogenic risks. The lifetime carcinogenic risk of NPAHs was 8.85 × 10-10-1.44 × 10-4, and some surface waters presented with potential carcinogenic risks.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising and sustainable technology which can generate electricity and treat antibiotic wastewater simultaneously. However, the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) induced by antibiotics in MFCs increase risks to ecosystems and human health. In this study, the activities of enzymes and regulation genes related to ARGs in MFCs spiked with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) were evaluated to explore the induction mechanism of ARGs. Under lower doses of SMX (10 mg/L and 20 mg/L SMX in this study), microorganisms tend to up regulate catalase and RpoS regulon to induce sul1, sul3 and intI1. The microorganisms exposed to higher doses of SMX (30 mg/L and 40 mg/L SMX in this study) tend to up regulate superoxide dismutase and SOS response to generate sul2 and sulA. Moreover, the exposure concentrations of SMX had no significant effect on the electricity production of MFCs. This work suggested that the ARGs in MFCs might be inhibited by affecting enzymatic activities and regulatory genes according to the antibiotic concentration without affecting the electricity production.

Due to rapid socioeconomic development, antibiotic pollution and heavy metal pollution are receiving increasing amounts of attention. Both antibiotics and heavy metals in the environment are persistent and toxic, and the interactions between the pollutants create potential long-term hazards for the ecological environment and human health as mixed pollutants. In this study, the surface water of the Yitong River in Changchun was used as the research object, and the hazards associated with antibiotics and heavy metals in the surface water were assessed by analyzing the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of antibiotics and heavy metals and by using ecological risk assessment and human health risk assessment models. The results showed that ofloxacin (OFL) and norfloxacin (NOR) varied seasonally according to the seasonal climate, with total concentrations ranging from 17.65 to 902.47 ng/L and ND to 260.49 ng/L for OFL and NOR, respectively, and from 8.30 to 120.40 µg/L, 1.52 to 113.41 µg/L and 0.03 to 0.04 µg/L for copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd), respectively. In terms of spatial distribution, the concentration of antibiotics in the urban sections, which had intensive human activities, was higher than that in the suburban sections, while the concentration of heavy metals in the suburban sections, which had intensive agricultural operations, was greater than that in the urban section. Ecological risk evaluation showed that NOR and OFL were present in the water bodies at a high-risk level, Cd was at a low pollution level, and the heavy metal Cd was the primary pollutant associated with health risks toward for adults and children, and it was mainly at a medium risk level. Additionally, both antibiotics and heavy metals posed higher health risks for children than for adults.
