RESUMEN

Third-party intervention is a beneficial means to alleviate conflicts and promote cooperation among disputants. The decision-making of disputants is closely related to the intensity of the impact of third-party intervention on their profits. Actually, disputants often decide whether to adopt cooperative strategies based on their own perceived rather than actual gains or losses brought about by third-party intervention. We, therefore, introduce prospect theory to explore the formation and maintenance of cooperation in a system composed of third parties and disputants, which, respectively, constitute two sub-networks of the interdependent networks. Both interveners and disputants participate in a prisoner's dilemma game, and the third-party intervener will pay a certain price to impose certain punishments on the defectors of the disputed layer. The simulation results show that the introduction of third-party intervention based on the prospect theory alleviates the conflicts in the dispute layer and promotes cooperation among disputants, which indicates that third parties such as governments or organizations should appropriately consider the risk attitudes of disputants when mediating their conflicts. The level of cooperation at the dispute layer is inversely proportional to the intervention cost and directly proportional to the intervention intensity. Our research may shed some new light on the study of the evolution of cooperation under third-party intervention.

BACKGROUND: Identification of active components of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and their respective targets is important for understanding the mechanisms underlying TCM efficacy. However, there are still no effective technical methods to achieve this. METHODS: Herein, we have established a method for rapidly identifying targets of a specific TCM and interrogating the targets with their corresponding active components based on Isothermal Shift Assay (iTSA) and database interrogation. RESULTS: We optimized iTSA workflow and identified 110 targets for Danhong injection (DHI) which is used as an effective remedy for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Moreover, we identified the targets of the nine major ingredients found in DHI. Database interrogation found that the potential targets for DHI, in which we verified that ADK as the target for salvianolic acid A and ALDH1B1 as the target for protocatechualdehyde in DHI, respectively. CONCLUSION: Overall, we established a novel paradigm model for the identification of targets and their respective ingredients in DHI, which facilitates the discovery of drug candidates and targets for improving disease management and contributes to revealing the underlying mechanisms of TCM and fostering TCM development and modernization.

BACKGROUND: Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) is the primary cause of myocardial inflammation in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Pyroptosis is a newly discovered form of programmed cell death accompanying inflammatory reactions. Our previous study showed that TRPC5 is upregulated in the myocardial injury of CIH rats. The present study aimed to explore the role of TRPC5 in CIH-induced myocardial cell pyroptosis. METHODS: A model of CIH in OSA rats was established. SD rats were randomly divided into control group(8rats) and OSA group(8rats). Scanning electron microscope(SEM) was performed on left ventricular tissues slides. Western blot were used to detect the expression levels of pyroptosis-related factors and TRPC5 and its downstream proteins in myocardia tissue. RESULTS: The pyroptosis of myocardial cells by SEM revealed damaged cell membrane integrity of OSA group rats, with fibrous tissue attached to the cell membrane surface, and vesicular protrusions and pyroptotic bodies were observed.Compared to the control group, the expression of pyroptosis-related proteins, such as caspase1, pro-IL-1ß, IL-1ß, IL-18, GSDMD, and GSDMD-N was upregulated in the OSA group (p < 0.05). Compared to the control group, the expression of TRPC5, NLPR3, p-CaMKIIß + δ+γ, and HDAC4 was higher in the OSA group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicated that the pyroptosis response increases in CIH-induced myocardial injury, and the mechanism that TRPC5 is upregulated, promoting the expression of NLRP3 and inflammasome formation through CaMKII phosphorylation and HDAC4 cytoplasmic translocation. This might be a potential target for the treatment of OSA-induced myocardial injury.

A multitude of functional mutations continue to emerge on the N-terminal domain (NTD) of the spike protein in SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariants. Understanding the immunogenicity of Omicron NTD and the properties of antibodies elicited by it is crucial for comprehending the impact of NTD mutations on viral fitness and guiding vaccine design. In this study, we find that most of NTD-targeting antibodies isolated from individuals with BA.5/BF.7 breakthrough infection (BTI) are ancestral (wildtype or WT)-reactive and non-neutralizing. Surprisingly, we identified five ultra-potent neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) that can only bind to Omicron but not WT NTD. Structural analysis revealed that they bind to a unique epitope on the N1/N2 loop of NTD and interact with the receptor-binding domain (RBD) via the light chain. These Omicron-specific NAbs achieve neutralization through ACE2 competition and blockage of ACE2-mediated S1 shedding. However, BA.2.86 and BA.2.87.1, which carry insertions or deletions on the N1/N2 loop, can evade these antibodies. Together, we provided a detailed map of the NTD-targeting antibody repertoire in the post-Omicron era, demonstrating their vulnerability to NTD mutations enabled by its evolutionary flexibility, despite their potent neutralization. These results revealed the function of the indels in the NTD of BA.2.86/JN.1 sublineage in evading neutralizing antibodies and highlighted the importance of considering the immunogenicity of NTD in vaccine design.

Sortilin-related receptor 1 (SorL1) deficiency is a genetic predisposition to familial Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its pathology is poorly understood. In SorL1-null rats, a disorder of the global endosome-lysosome network (ELN) is found in hippocampal neurons. Deletion of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in SorL1-null rats could not completely rescue the neuronal abnormalities in the ELN of the hippocampus and the impairment of spatial memory in SorL1-null young rats. These in vivo observations indicated that APP is one of the cargoes of SorL1 in the regulation of the ELN, which affects hippocampal-dependent memory. When SorL1 is depleted, the endolysosome takes up more of the lysosome flux and damages lysosomal digestion, leading to pathological lysosomal storage and disturbance of cholesterol and iron homeostasis in the hippocampus. These disturbances disrupt the original homeostasis of the material-energy-subcellular structure and reprogram energy metabolism based on fatty acids in the SorL1-null hippocampus, instead of glucose. Although fatty acid oxidation increases ATP supply, it cannot reduce the levels of the harmful byproduct ROS during oxidative phosphorylation, as it does in glucose catabolism. Therefore, the SorL1-null rats exhibit hippocampal degeneration, and their spatial memory is impaired. Our research sheds light on the pathology of SorL1 deficiency in AD.

CONTEXT: The adsorptions of gas (CO, CO2, NH3) by metal (Au, Ag, Cu)-doped single layer WS2 are studied by density functional theory. The doping of metal atoms makes WS2 behave as n-type semiconductors. The final adsorption sites for CO, CO2, and NH3 are close to the atomic sites of the doped metal. The adsorptions of CO and NH3 gases on Cu/WS2, Ag/WS2, and Au/WS2 are dominated by chemisorption. The doped metal atoms enhance the hybridization of the substrate with the gas molecular orbitals, which contributes to the charge transfer and enhances the adsorption of the gas with the material surface. The adsorptions of CO and NH3 on Cu/WS2 and Ag/WS2 allow favorable desorption in a short time after heating. The single-layer Cu/WS2 is proved to have the potential to be used as a reliable recyclable sensor for CO. This work provides a theoretical basis for developing high-performance WS2-based gas sensors. METHODS: In this paper, the adsorption energy, electronic structure, charge transfer, and recovery time of CO, CO2, and NH3 in the doped system have been investigated based on the CASTEP code of density functional theory. The exchange correlation function used is the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The TS (Tkatchenko-Scheffler) dispersion correction method was used to involve the effects of van der Waals interaction on the adsorption energies for all adsorption system. The ultrasoft pseudopotentials are chosen and the plane-wave cut-off energies are set to 500 eV. The k-point mesh generated by the Monkhorst package scheme is used to perform the numerical integration of the Brillouin zone and 5 × 5 × 1 k-point grid is used. The tolerances of total energy convergence, maximum ionic force, ionic displacement, and stress component are 1.0 × 10-5 eV/atom, 0.03 eV/Å, 0.001 Å, and 0.05 GPa, respectively.

Antimony selenosulfide (Sb2(S,Se)3) has obtained widespread concern for photovoltaic applications as a light absorber due to superior photoelectric features. Accordingly, various deposition technologies have been developed in recent years, especially hydrothermal deposition method, which has achieved a great success. However, device performances are limited with severe carrier recombination, relating to the quality of absorber and interfaces. Herein, bulk and interface defects are simultaneously suppressed by regulating heterogeneous nucleation kinetics with barium dibromide (BaBr2) introduction. In details, the Br adsorbs and dopes on the polar planes of cadmium sulfide (CdS) buffer layer, promoting the exposure of nonpolar planes of CdS, which facilitates the favorable growth of [hk1]-Sb2(S,Se)3 films possessing superior crystallinity and small interface defects. Additionally, the Se/S ratio is increased due to the replacement of S/Se by Br, causing a downshift of the Fermi levels with a benign band alignment and a shallow-level defect. Moreover, Ba2+ is located at grain boundaries by coordination with S and Se ions, passivating grain boundary defects. Consequently, the efficiency is increased from 7.70% to 10.12%. This work opens an avenue towards regulating the heterogeneous nucleation kinetics of Sb2(S,Se)3 film deposited via hydrothermal deposition approach to optimize its crystalline orientation and defect features.

BACKGROUND: Renal denervation (RDN) can lower blood pressure (BP) in patients with hypertension in both the presence and absence of medication. This is the first sham-controlled trial investigating the safety and efficacy of RDN in China. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, randomized, patient- and outcome-assessor-blinded, sham-controlled trial investigated radiofrequency RDN in patients with hypertension on standardized triple antihypertensive therapy. Eligible patients were randomized 1:1 to undergo RDN using a multi-electrode radiofrequency catheter (Iberis; AngioCare, Shanghai, China) or a sham procedure. The primary efficacy outcome was the between-group difference in baseline-adjusted change in mean 24-hour ambulatory systolic BP from randomization to 6 months. RESULTS: Of 217 randomized patients (mean age, 45.3±10.2 years; 21% female), 107 were randomized to RDN and 110 were randomized to sham control. At 6 months, there was a greater reduction in 24-hour systolic BP in the RDN (-13.0±12.1 mm Hg) compared with the sham control group (-3.0±13.0 mm Hg; baseline-adjusted between-group difference, -9.4 mm Hg [95% CI, -12.8 to -5.9]; P<0.001). Compared with sham, 24-hour diastolic BP was lowered by -5.0 mm Hg ([95% CI, -7.5 to -2.4]; P<0.001) 6 months after RDN, and office systolic and diastolic BP was lowered by -6.4 mm Hg ([95% CI, -10.5 to -2.3]; P=0.003) and -5.1 mm Hg ([95% CI, -8.2 to -2.0]; P=0.001), respectively. One patient in the RDN group experienced an access site complication (hematoma), which resolved without sequelae. No other major device- or procedure-related safety events occurred through follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: In this trial of Chinese patients with uncontrolled hypertension on a standardized triple pharmacotherapy, RDN was safe and reduced ambulatory and office BP at 6 months compared with sham. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of immersion on immune enzyme activity, haemolymph index, intestinal microbiome and metabolome of E. sinensis after low temperature air exposure. The results showed that low temperature air exposure induced stress response, which led to hepatopancreas injury and increased membrane permeability, but this situation was reversible and alleviated after immersion. In addition, after exposure to low temperature air, haemolymph metabolism-related substances such as glucose and total cholesterol were significantly different from the initial value (P < 0.05), and gradually returned to the initial level after immersion. The changes of intestinal flora and hepatopancreas metabolism caused by low temperature air exposure did not fully recover after immersion, and its negative effects did not completely disappear. The sequencing results showed that the species composition and diversity of intestinal microorganisms of Chinese mitten crabs were changed after low temperature air exposure and immersion treatment. The relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria were increased, while the relative abundance of Firmicutes was decreased (P < 0.05). Metabolomics analysis showed that lysine levels increased significantly, taurocholic acid levels decreased significantly, and amino acid metabolism and lipid metabolism balance were disturbed in hepatopancreas of E. sinensis after exposure to low temperature air and immersion (P < 0.05). This study will provide new insights into the recovery mechanism of water immersion on Chinese mitten crabs after exposure to air.

The disposal of slaughterhouse blood poses significant environmental challenges due to its biological instability and high nutrient content. We used a gradient of 10% blood increments (0-100%) to feed BSFL, and the correlation between the proportion of bovine blood and the BSFL weight gain, mortality rate, fatty acid content, and amino acid content was researched. Results indicate a positive correlation between the bovine blood content and BSFL mortality, with survival rates above 95% for blood proportions below 60%. Larval weight exhibited a negative correlation as the bovine blood content increased. Nutritional analysis revealed that the crude protein content in BSFL increased proportionally with bovine blood (14.75-25.45 g/100 g), while the crude fat content decreased correspondingly (10.70-4.66 g/100 g). The sugar content remained relatively constant across groups. Fatty acid analysis showed increased levels of C16:0, C14:0, and C16:1 and decreased levels of C18:1, C18:2, and C18:3 with higher bovine blood contents. The amino acid content generally increased with higher blood proportions. This study highlights the bioconversion potential of BSFL for bovine blood and underscores the impact of protein, lipid, and sugar concentrations in feed on BSFL growth. These findings provide valuable insights for utilizing slaughterhouse waste in BSFL rearing, contributing to the development of more sustainable waste management and animal feed production methods.

A new stag beetle fossil, Prostreptocerus burmiticus Yu & Cai gen. et sp. nov., is described based on a single male specimen. This is the first representative of the subfamily Lampriminae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Lucanidae) from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. The new species is distinctive among Lucanidae due to its well-developed, right-angled mandible, frons featuring a pair of large protuberances, a coarse and sparsely punctate elytral disc, and large tubercles on the humeri. Prostreptocerus Yu & Cai is placed within Lampriminae based on several key characteristics. Morphologically, it is most similar to the extant Streptocerus Fairmaire, 1850. The current distribution of Streptocerus and Lampriminae is primarily restricted to the Southern Hemisphere, suggesting that this lineage is ancient and existed on Gondwanaland, which has significant geographical implications. This discovery extends the fossil record of Lampriminae and provides additional evidence for the existence of sexual dimorphism and potential combat behavior in Mesozoic lucanids. Additionally, Electraesalopsis Bai, Zhang & Qiu, 2017, previously placed as Lucanidae incertae sedis, shares many characteristics with Prostreptocerus Yu & Cai and is also assigned to Lampriminae based on a suite of traits.

A tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivative, TPEPhDAT, modified by diaminotriazine (DAT), was prepared by successive Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and ring-closing reactions. This compound exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties in the DMSO/MeOH system, with a fluorescence emission intensity in the aggregated state that is 5-fold higher than that of its counterpart in a dilute solution. Moreover, the DAT structure of the molecule is a good acceptor of protons; thus, the TPEPhDAT molecule exhibits acid-responsive fluorescence. TPEPhDAT was protonated by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), leading to fluorescence quenching, which was reversibly restored by treatment with ammonia (on-off switch). Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computational studies have shown that protonation enhances the electron-withdrawing capacity of the triazine nucleus and reduces the bandgap. The protonated TPEPhDAT conformation became more distorted, and the fluorescence lifetime was attenuated, which may have produced a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) effect, leading to fluorescence redshift and quenching. MeOH can easily remove the protonated TPEPhDAT, and this acid-induced discoloration and erasable property can be applied in anti-counterfeiting.

Hydrogels with rapid wound-healing capabilities and antimicrobial effects are gaining significant interest in related fields. Nonetheless, developing a multifunctional hydrogel wound dressing with injectable self-assembling, self-healing, antimicrobial properties, and efficient skin wound-healing capabilities remained a formidable challenge. In this experiment, we drew inspiration from silkworm cocoons' natural formation and protective mechanisms, employing a novel physical cross-linking method to create an injectable and self-healing quaternary hydrogel successfully. The hydrogel is based on a matrix of silk fibroin/silk sericin (SF/SS), with 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate sodium salt (DMPG) serving as a physical cross-linking agent to form the hydrogel network structure, and the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) further enhances its antimicrobial capabilities. Our biomimetic hydrogel, which replicated the chemical properties of silkworm cocoons, demonstrated excellent hydrophilicity with a water contact angle that ranged from 37 to 52°. Its tensile and compressive resistance was approximately four times greater than that of a pure SF hydrogel, and its swelling performance was about three times higher than that of a pure SF hydrogel. Furthermore, the hydrogel exhibited an impressive bacterial inhibition rate of over 98 % in bacterial growth and inhibition experiments, which provided a solid foundation for accelerating wound healing. Likewise, experiments with mice and histological analyses revealed that on day 7, the expression of TNF-α and IL-1ß in the wound tissues treated with the SF/SS/AgNPs hydrogel was significantly reduced by >25 % compared to the blank control group. This reduction indicates that the hydrogel could decrease the production of inflammatory cytokines, potentially aiding in the acceleration of wound healing and mitigation of inflammation-related adverse reactions. By day 14, the wounds were healed mainly, with the wound area reduced by 17 % compared to that of the blank group. This demonstrates the significant potential of this cocoon-mimetic hydrogel in accelerating wound healing and providing wound protection.

Although previous studies have shown that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can ameliorate addictive behaviors and cravings, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of high-frequency rTMS with the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (L-DLPFC) as a target region on smoking addiction in nicotine-dependent individuals by detecting the change of spontaneous brain activity in the reward circuitry. We recruited 17 nicotine-dependence participants, who completed 10 sessions of 10 Hz rTMS over a 2-week period and underwent evaluation of several dependence-related scales, and resting-state fMRI scan before and after the treatment. Functional connectivity (FC) analysis was conducted with reward-related brain regions as seeds, including ventral tegmental area, bilateral nucleus accumbens (NAc), bilateral DLPFC, and bilateral amygdala. We found that, after the treatment, individuals showed reduced nicotine dependence, alleviated tobacco withdrawal symptoms, and diminished smoking cravings. The right NAc showed increased FC with right fusiform gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus (ITG), calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex, superior occipital gyrus (SOG), lingual gyrus, and bilateral cuneus. No significant FC changes were observed in other seed regions. Moreover, the changes in FC between the right NAc and the right ITG as well as SOG before and after rTMS were negatively correlated with changes in smoking scale scores. Our findings suggest that high-frequency L-DLPFC-rTMS reduces nicotine dependence and improves tobacco withdrawal symptoms, and the dysfunctional connectivity in reward circuitry may be the underlying neural mechanism for nicotine addiction and its therapeutic target.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and radical surgery for non-metastatic pancreatic cancer (PC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 89 stage I/II/III PC patients who underwent HIFU (n = 43) or surgery (n = 46) at the Third Xiangya Hospital from January 2020 to December 2021. Pain relief, Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), overall survival (OS), treatment-related complications and risk factors for OS were assessed. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the pain relief rate at 30 days post-treatment between the two groups. However, compared with the surgery group, the HIFU group showed significantly lower post-treatment VAS scores (p = 0.019). In the surgery group, the KPS at 30 days post-treatment was lower than pretreatment KPS (70 vs 80; p = 0.015). This relationship was reversed in the HIFU group (80 vs 70; p = 0.024). Median OS favored surgery over HIFU (23 vs 10 months; p < 0.001), with a higher 1-year OS rate (69.57% vs 32.6%; p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in OS between the two groups for stage III patients (p = 0.177). Complications rated ≥ grade III were 2.33% in the HIFU group and 32.6% in the surgery group. Multivariate analyses showed that age, KPS, and treatment methods were independent prognostic factors for OS. CONCLUSION: HIFU demonstrates advantages over surgery in terms of early KPS, VAS improvements, and safety for pancreatic cancer; however, long-term outcomes favor surgery. For III-stage disease, HIFU was noninferior to surgery in overall survival.

Plasma phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) is a risk factor for human coronary artery disease (CAD). Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), carried by high-density lipoprotein (HDL), is a potent lipid mediator and is also associated with CAD. Previous studies indicate that Pltp knockout (KO) (germline) mice have decreased circulating S1P without influencing apoM, a major S1P carrier on HDL. We then hypothesized that, like apoM, PLTP is another S1P carrier. We established inducible Pltp-KO, germline Apom-KO, and Pltp/Apom double KO mice and measured plasma lipoprotein and S1P levels under chow and a Western diet. We found that PLTP deficiency and the double deficiency have a similar effect on HDL reduction, while apoM deficiency has no such effect. Importantly, we found that all mice have about 50% reduction in plasma S1P levels, compared to wild type mice, and PLTP deficiency significantly reduces apoM levels (about 40%), while apoM deficiency has no effect on PLTP activity, indicating that PLTP depletion reduces S1P through HDL reduction and there is no additive effect with the double deficiency. To further evaluate this HDL-reduction-mediated effect, we overexpressed PLTP which also caused a reduction of HDL. We found that the overexpression significantly reduces S1P and apoM as well as apoA-I, a major apolipoprotein on HDL. Furthermore, we found that albumin (another reported S1P carrier) deficiency in mice has no effect on plasma S1P. We also found that the influence of PLTP on HDL may not require its direct binding to the particle. In conclusion, PLTP is not a direct S1P carrier. PLTP depletion or overexpression in adulthood dramatically reduces plasma S1P through HDL reduction. ApoM, but not albumin, deficiency reduces plasma S1P levels.

Background: Particulate matter (PM), which affects respiratory health, has been well documented; however, substantial evidence from large cohorts is still limited, particularly in highly polluted countries and for PM1. Objective: Our objective was to examine the potential causal links between long-term exposure to PMs (PM2.5, PM10, and more importantly, PM1) and respiratory mortality. Methods: A total of 580,757 participants from the Guangzhou area, China, were recruited from 2009 to 2015 and followed up through 2020. The annual average concentrations of PMs at a 1-km spatial resolution around the residential addresses were estimated using validated spatiotemporal models. The marginal structural Cox model was used to estimate the associations of PM exposure with respiratory mortality, accounting for time-varying PM exposure. Results were stratified by demographics and lifestyle behaviors factors. Results: Among the participants, the mean age was 48.33 (SD 17.55) years, and 275,676 (47.47%) of them were men. During the follow-up period, 7260 deaths occurred due to respiratory diseases. The annual average concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 showed a declining trend during the follow-up period. After adjusting for confounders, a 6.6% (95% CI 5.6%-7.6%), 4.2% (95% CI 3.6%-4.7%), and 4.0% (95% CI 3.6%-4.5%) increase in the risk of respiratory mortality was observed following each 1-µg/m3 increase in concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, respectively. In addition, older participants, nonsmokers, participants with higher exercise frequency, and those exposed to a lower normalized difference vegetation index tended to be more susceptible to the effects of PMs. Furthermore, participants in the low-exposure group tended to be at a 7.6% and 2.7% greater risk of respiratory mortality following PM1 and PM10 exposure, respectively, compared to the entire cohort. Conclusions: This cohort study provides causal clues of the respiratory impact of long-term ambient PM exposure, indicating that PM reduction efforts may continuously benefit the population's respiratory health.

In this paper, a flexural Mikaelian lens in thin plate is designed by using conformation transformation. The propagation characteristics of flexural waves in the lens are investigated through rays trajectory equation, simulation analyses, and experimental tests, confirming the self-focusing properties of the Mikaelian lens. Additionally, the study explores the Talbot effect for flexural waves, revealing through simulation studies that the Talbot effect within the Mikaelian lens exhibits nearly diffraction-free properties. Building on the non-diffractive nature of the Talbot effect within the Mikaelian lens, we explore the potential for encoding flexural waves using active interference sources. The simulation and experiment results demonstrate the good performance of the designed active encoding system. This work opens up new avenues for the encoding of flexural waves, presenting promising implications for applications in communication such as structural health monitoring, wireless communication in solid media and data transmission in robotics and other areas related to flexural wave technology.

Evidence linking greenness to all-site and site-specific cancers remains limited, and the complex role of air pollution in this pathway is unclear. We aimed to fill these gaps by using a large cohort in southern China. A total of 654,115 individuals were recruited from 2009 to 2015 and followed-up until December 2020. We calculated the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in a 500-m buffer around the participants' residences to represent the greenness exposure. Cox proportional-hazards models were used to evaluate the impact of greenness on the risk of all-site and site-specific cancer mortality. Additionally, we assessed both the mediation and interaction roles of air pollution (i.e., PM2.5, PM10, and NO2) in the greenness-cancer association through a causal mediation analysis using a four-way decomposition method. Among the 577,643 participants, 10,088 cancer deaths were recorded. We found a 10% (95% CI: 5-16%) reduction in all-site cancer mortality when the NDVI increased from the lowest to the highest quartile. When stratified by cancer type, our estimates suggested 18% (95% CI: 8-27%) and 51% (95% CI: 16-71%) reductions in mortality due to respiratory system cancer and brain and nervous system cancer, respectively. For the above protective effect, a large proportion could be explained by the mediation (all-site cancer: 1.0-27.7%; respiratory system cancer: 1.2-32.3%; brain and nervous system cancer: 3.6-109.1%) and negative interaction (all-site cancer: 2.1-25.7%; respiratory system cancer: 2.0-25.7%; brain and nervous system cancer: not significant) effects of air pollution. We found that particulate matter (i.e., PM2.5 and PM10) had a stronger causal mediation effect (25.0-109.1%) than NO2 (1.0-3.6%), while NO2 had a stronger interaction effect (25.7%) than particulate matter (2.0-2.8%). In summary, greenness was significantly beneficial in reducing the mortality of all-site, respiratory system, and brain and nervous system cancer in southern China, with the impact being modulated and mediated by air pollution.
