RESUMEN

To retrospectively assess the effectiveness of deep learning (DL) model, based on breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in predicting preoperative lymphovascular invasion (LVI) status in patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer who have negative axillary lymph nodes (LNs). Data was gathered from 280 patients, including 148 with LVI-positive and 141 with LVI-negative lesions. These patients had undergone preoperative breast MRI and were histopathologically confirmed to have invasive breast cancer without axillary LN metastasis. The cohort was randomly split into training and validation groups in a 7:3 ratio. Radiomics features for each lesion were extracted from the first post-contrast dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression method and logistic regression analyses were employed to identify significant radiomic features and clinicoradiological variables. These models were established using four machine learning (ML) algorithms and one DL algorithm. The predictive performance of the models (radiomics, clinicoradiological, and combination) was assessed through discrimination and compared using the DeLong test. Four clinicoradiological parameters and 10 radiomic features were selected by LASSO for model development. The Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model, constructed using both radiomic and clinicoradiological features, demonstrated excellent performance in predicting LVI, achieving a high area under the curve (AUC) of 0.835 for validation. The DL model (MLP-radiomic) achieved the highest accuracy (AUC = 0.896), followed by DL model (MLP-combination) with an AUC of 0.835. Both DL models were significantly superior to the ML model (RF-clinical) with an AUC of 0.720. The DL model (MLP), which integrates radiomic features with clinicoradiological information, effectively aids in the preoperative determination of LVI status in patients with invasive breast cancer and negative axillary LNs. This is beneficial for making informed clinical decisions.

In the coal mining process, a large amount of harmful gases will be produced, which we call "gas". The main component of gas is methane. After the methane concentration reaches a certain limit, an explosion will occur, seriously affecting the safety of the production of coal mines. Gas safety situational awareness is an important basis for gas early warning. In order to take appropriate measures for different levels of risk, the safety situation level is classified into five levels, which can be attributed to the classification problem in machine learning. We propose a gas security situation analysis model based on the Schweizer-Sklar rule (GSSAM-SSR) using the multiweighted Schweizer-Sklar triangular norm array combination rule (SSR). First, the raw data are preprocessed. The model uses K-means clustering with feature preference to determine the label column of the data set and principal component analysis to reduce the dimensionality of the collected high-dimensional gas-related data. Ten basic classification models are constructed, and the best performing models are selected as the basic classifier set by using the preorder method. Then, the SSR combination rule is proposed to combine the basic classifiers. Finally, considering the dynamic and quasi dynamic data of the mine, the basic classifier set and SSR combination rule are combined to construct the GSSAM-SSR model and applied to the gas security situation analysis. Experimental results show that the SSR combination rule achieves the best classification performance, exhibiting an accuracy of 94.43%, which is 2.51% higher than the accuracy of the gradient boosting decision tree model, which was the highest performing basic classifier and higher than the accuracies of the voting method and Bayesian combination rule.

Genetic variations in the ovine ovulation rate, which are associated with the FecB mutation, provide useful models by which to explore the mechanisms regulating the development of mammalian antral follicles. In order to study the effects of the FecB mutation on cumulus cell differentiation, preovulatory follicles were aspirated and cumulus cells were isolated from three FecB genotypes (homozygous, heterozygous and wild type) of Small Tail Han (STH) sheep superstimulated with FSH. Transcriptome information from tens of thousands of cumulus cells was determined with the 10 × Genomics single-cell RNA-seq technology. Under the superovulation treatment, the observed number of preovulatory follicles in the ovaries of FecB carriers was still significantly higher than that in the wild-type (P < 0.05). The expression patterns of cumulus cells differed between FecB carriers and wild-type ewes. The screened cumulus cells could also be further divided into different cell clusters, and the differentiation states and fates of each group of cumulus cells also remained different, which supports the notion that heterogeneity in gene expression is prevalent in single cells. The oxidative phosphorylation pathway was significantly enriched in differentially expressed genes among the cell differentiation branch nodes of cumulus cells and among the differentially expressed genes of cumulus cells from the three genotypes. Combined with the important role of oxidative phosphorylation in the maturation of COCs, we suggest that the oxidative phosphorylation pathway of cumulus cells plays a crucial role in the differentiation process of cumulus cells and the mutation effect of the FecB gene.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was characterized as being hypervascular. In the present study, we generated a single-cell spatial transcriptomic landscape of the vasculogenic etiology of HCC and illustrated overexpressed Golgi phosphoprotein 73 (GP73) HCC cells exerting cellular communication with vascular endothelial cells with high pro-angiogenesis potential via multiple receptor-ligand interactions in the process of tumor vascular development. Specifically, we uncovered an interactive GP73-mediated regulatory network coordinated with c-Myc, lactate, Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) pathway, and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) signals in HCC cells and elucidated its pro-angiogenic roles in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, we found that GP73, the pivotal hub gene, was activated by histone lactylation and c-Myc, which stimulated the phosphorylation of downstream STAT3 by directly binding STAT3 and simultaneously enhancing glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78)-induced ERS. STAT3 potentiates GP73-mediated pro-angiogenic functions. Clinically, serum GP73 levels were positively correlated with HCC response to anti-angiogenic regimens and were essential for a prognostic nomogram showing good predictive performance for determining 6-month and 1-year survival in patients with HCC treated with anti-angiogenic therapy. Taken together, the aforementioned data characterized the pro-angiogenic roles and mechanisms of a GP73-mediated network and proved that GP73 is a crucial tumor angiogenesis niche gene with favorable anti-angiogenic potential in the treatment of HCC.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a highly recalcitrant organic pollutant, and its bioaccumulation severely endangers human health. While various methods are developed for PFOA removal, the targeted design of adsorbents with high efficiency and reusability remains largely unexplored. Here the rational design and synthesis of two novel zirconium-based metal‒organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing free ortho-hydroxy sites, namely noninterpenetrated PCN-1001 and twofold interpenetrated PCN-1002, are presented. Single crystal analysis of the pure ligand reveals that intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a pivotal role in directing the formation of MOFs with free hydroxy groups. Furthermore, the transformation from PCN-1001 to PCN-1002 is realized. Compared to PCN-1001, PCN-1002 displays higher chemical stability due to interpenetration, thereby demonstrating an exceptional PFOA adsorption capacity of up to 632 mg g-1 (1.53 mmol g-1), which is comparable to the reported record values. Moreover, PCN-1002 shows rapid kinetics, high selectivity, and long-life cycles in PFOA removal tests. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance results and density functional theory calculations reveal that multiple hydrogen bonds between the free ortho-hydroxy sites and PFOA, along with Lewis acid-base interaction, work collaboratively to enhance PFOA adsorption.

The threat of microplastic pollution in soil ecosystems has caused widespread concern. In order to clarify the effect of polyethylene microplastics on soil properties, a 4-month soil incubation experiment was conducted in this study to investigate the effect of different mass fraction (1 %, 2.5 %, and 5 %) and particle sizes (30 mesh and 100 mesh) of polyethylene microplastics on soil chemical properties, nutrient contents, and enzyme activities. The results showed that:① When the particle size was 100 mesh, microplastics at the mass concentrations of the 2.5 % and 5 % treatments significantly reduced soil pH, and the exposure of polyethylene microplastics had no significant effect on soil conductivity. ② Compared to that in CK, the addition of microplastics reduced soil available potassium, available phosphorus, and nitrate nitrogen to varying degrees. The addition of 100 mesh microplastics significantly increased soil organic matter and ammonium nitrogen. ③ When the particle size was 100 mesh, compared to that in CK, treatments of all concentrations significantly increased soil catalase activity and alkaline phosphatase, showing an increasing but not significant trend, and the 5 % concentration treatment significantly decreased soil sucrase activity. ④ Changes in soil properties were influenced by the addition of microplastics of different concentrations and sizes, with higher concentrations and smaller particle sizes having more significant effects. In conclusion, the effects of microplastics on soil properties were not as pronounced as expected, and future research should focus on the mechanisms involved in the different effects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is unavoidable even despite the development of more effective surgical approaches. During hepatic IRI, activated HSC (aHSC) are involved in liver injury and recovery. APPROACH AND RESULT: A proportion of aHSC increased significantly both in the mouse liver tissues with IRI and in the primary mouse HSCs and LX-2 cells during hypoxia-reoxygenation. "Loss-of-function" experiments revealed that depleting aHSC with gliotoxin exacerbated liver damage in IRI mice. Subsequently, we found that the transcription of mRNA and the expression of B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA) protein were lower in aHSC compared with quiescent HSCs. Interestingly, overexpression or knockdown of BTLA resulted in opposite changes in the activation of specific markers for HSCs such as collagen type I alpha 1, α-smooth muscle actin, and Vimentin. Moreover, the upregulation of these markers was also observed in the liver tissues of global BLTA-deficient (BTLA-/-) mice and was higher after hepatic IRI. Compared with wild-type mice, aHSC were higher, and liver injury was lower in BTLA-/- mice following IRI. However, the depletion of aHSC reversed these effects. In addition, the depletion of aHSC significantly exacerbated liver damage in BTLA-/- mice with hepatic IRI. Furthermore, the TGF-ß1 signaling pathway was identified as a potential mechanism for BTLA to negatively regulate the activation of HSCs in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: These novel findings revealed a critical role of BTLA. Particularly, the receptor inhibits HSC-activated signaling in acute IRI, implying that it is a potential immunotherapeutic target for decreasing the IRI risk.

BACKGROUND: The optimal timing of performing ICSI on immature oocytes for POSEIDON patients is still unknown to get better early embryonic development outcomes. The purpose of this study was to implore the most appropriate time to carry out ICSI on in vitro maturation GV and MI oocytes for POSEIDON patients. METHODS: Two hundred thirty-nine immature oocytes from 163 POSEIDON patients were prospectively performed ICSI at different timings: P-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes 4-6 h after the first polar body extrusion, N = 81), R-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes less than 4 h after the first polar body extrusion, N = 80), and E-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes the next day after oocytes retrieval, N = 78). Fertilization and embryonic development outcomes were collected and statistically analyzed. Mitochondria distribution of cytoplasm of in vitro matured oocytes with different time cultures after the first polar body (PB1) extrusion was stained. RESULTS: Compared to the E-ICSI group, more day 3 embryos from P-ICSI became blastocysts after sequential culture though without statistical significance (OR = 3.71, 95% CI: 0.94-14.63, P = 0.061). Compared to the E-ICSI group, more embryos from both P-ICSI and R-ICSI groups were clinically used with statistical significance (OR = 5.67, 95% CI: 2.24-14.35, P = 0.000 for P-ICSI embryos; OR = 3.23, 95% CI: 1.23-8.45, P = 0.017 for R-ICSI embryos). Compared to the E-ICSI group, transferred embryos from P-ICSI and R-ICSI had a higher implantation rate though without statistical significance (35.3% for P-ICSI embryos; 9.1% or R-ICSI embryos and 0% for E-ICSI embryos, P = 0.050). Among the three group, there were most healthy babies delivered from the P-ICSI group (5, 1 and 0 for P-ICSI, R-ICSI and E-ICSI respectively). The mitochondria in the cytoplasm of in vitro matured oocytes with a less than 4 h and 4-6 h culture after PB1 extrusion presented semiperipheral and diffused distribution patterns, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed P-ICSI (ICSI was performed on in vitro matured oocytes 4-6 h after the first polar body extrusion) provided the most efficient method to utilize the immaturation oocytes basing on embryos utilization and live birth outcome for low prognosis patients under the POSEIDON classification. The mitochondria distribution of the in vitro matured oocytes' cytoplasm from P-ICSI varied that from R-ICSI.

Oleogels have been explored as a new lipid-based delivery system, however, their insolubility and unsuitable shape severely limit their application in food systems. Herein, core-shell oleogel capsules with high monodispersity (coefficient variation (CV) < 5%)) were prepared via gravity-assisted co-flowing microfluidic device and simply air-drying. The oleogel capsules with oleogel core and ultrathin calcium-alginate shell were prepared. Oleogel capsules maintained their original shape at pH = 2.0 but swelled rapidly at pH = 6.8 and 7.4. The swelling ratio of shell can be adjusted by inner fluid flow rate (Qin). Notably, the core with beeswax (BW) crystal network, effectively improved the stability performances and also could provide thermal response. Finally, the oleogel capsules demonstrated excellent sustained release and UV protection of lipophilic bioactives. This work sheds light on development of novel oleogel capsules, making them ideal candidates for smart food encapsulation applications.

Linker installation is a potent strategy for integrating specific properties and functionalities into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This method enhances the structural diversity of frameworks and enables the precise construction of robust structures, complementing the conventional postsynthetic modification approaches, by fully leveraging open metal sites and active organic linkers at targeting locations. Herein, we demonstrated an insertion of a d-camphorate linker into a flexible Zr-based MOF, PCN-700, through linker installation. The resultant homochiral MOF not only exhibits remarkable stability but also functions as a highly efficient luminescent material for enantioselective sensing. Competitive absorption and energy/electron transfer processes contribute to the sensing performance, while the difference in binding affinities dominates the enantioselectivity. This work presents a straightforward route to crafting stable homochiral MOFs for enantioselective sensing.

Construction of robust heterogeneous catalysts with atomic precision is a long-sought pursuit in the catalysis field due to its fundamental significance in taming chemical transformations. Herein, we present the synthesis of a single-crystalline pyrazolate metal-organic framework (MOF) named PCN-300, bearing a lamellar structure with two distinct Cu centers and one-dimensional (1D) open channels when stacked. PCN-300 exhibits exceptional stability in aqueous solutions across a broad pH range from 1 to 14. In contrast, its monomeric counterpart assembled through hydrogen bonding displays limited stability, emphasizing the role of Cu-pyrazolate coordination bonds in framework robustness. Remarkably, the synergy of the 1D open channels, excellent stability, and the active Cu-porphyrin sites endows PCN-300 with outstanding catalytic activity in the cross dehydrogenative coupling reaction to form the C-O bond without the "compulsory" ortho-position directing groups (yields up to 96%), outperforming homogeneous Cu-porphyrin catalysts. Moreover, PCN-300 exhibits superior recyclability and compatibility with various phenol substrates. Control experiments reveal the synergy between the Cu-porphyrin center and framework in PCN-300 and computations unveil the free radical pathway of the reaction. This study highlights the power of robust pyrazolate MOFs in directly activating C-H bonds and catalyzing challenging chemical transformations in an environmentally friendly manner.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a coronavirus that infects chickens, which exhibits a broad tropism for epithelial cells, infecting the tracheal mucosal epithelium, intestinal mucosal epithelium, and renal tubular epithelial cells. Utilizing single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), we systematically examined cells in renal, bursal, and tracheal tissues following IBV infection and identified tissue-specific molecular markers expressed in distinct cell types. We evaluated the expression of viral RNA in diverse cellular populations and subsequently ascertained that distal tubules and collecting ducts within the kidney, bursal mucosal epithelial cells, and follicle-associated epithelial cells exhibit susceptibility to IBV infection through immunofluorescence. Furthermore, our findings revealed an upregulation in the transcription of proinflammatory cytokines IL18 and IL1B in renal macrophages as well as increased expression of apoptosis-related gene STAT in distal tubules and collecting duct cells upon IBV infection leading to renal damage. Cell-to-cell communication unveiled potential interactions between diverse cell types, as well as upregulated signaling pathways and key sender-receiver cell populations after IBV infection. Integrating single-cell data from all tissues, we applied weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify gene modules that are specifically expressed in different cell populations. Based on the WGCNA results, we identified seven immune-related gene modules and determined the differential expression pattern of module genes, as well as the hub genes within these modules. Our comprehensive data provides valuable insights into the pathogenesis of IBV as well as avian antiviral immunology.

For gravitational wave detection, the telescope is required to have an ultra-low wavefront error and ultra-high signal-to-noise ratio, where the power of the stray light should be controlled on the order of less than 10-10. In this work, we propose an alternative stray light suppression method for the optical design of an off-axis telescope with four mirrors by carefully considering the optimal optical paths. The method includes three steps. First, in the period of the optical design, the stray light caused by the tertiary mirror and the quaternary mirror is suppressed by increasing the angle formed by the optical axes of the tertiary mirror and the quaternary mirror and reducing the radius of curvature of the quaternary mirror as much as possible to make sure the optical system provides a beam quality with a wavefront error less than λ/80. Next, the stray light could satisfy the requirement of the order of 10-10 when the level of roughness reaches 0.2 nm, and the pollution of mirrors is controlled at the level of CL100. Finally, traditional stray light suppression methods should also be applied to mechanics, including the use of the optical barrier, baffle tube, and black paint. It can be seen that the field stop can efficiently reduce stray light caused by the secondary mirror by more than 55% in the full field of view. The baffle tube mounted on the position of the exit pupil can reduce the overall stray light energy by 5%, and the difference between the ideal absorber (absorption coefficient is 100%) and the actual black paint (absorption coefficient is 90%) is 3.2%. These simulation results are confirmed by the Monte Carlo method for a stray light analysis. Based on the above results, one can conclude that the geometry structure of the optical design, the quality of mirrors, and the light barrier can greatly improve the stray light suppression ability of the optical system, which is vital when developing a gravitational wave telescope with ultra-low stray light energy.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an uncommon and incurable B-cell lymphoma subtype that has an aggressive course. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been associated with an increased risk for B-cell lymphomas, and is characterized by distinct clinical and genetic features. Here, we showed that 9.5% of MCL Chinese patients were hepatitis B surface antigen positive (HBsAg+). Compared to HBsAg-negative (HBsAg-) patients, HBsAg+ MCL patients had a greater incidence of elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), but no difference was observed in the other clinical characteristics, including sex, age, ECOG ps, Ann Arbor stage, MIPI, extranodal involvement and Ki-67. The HD-AraC (high-dose cytarabine) regimen was the main first-line induction regimen for younger HBsAg+ patients, and cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (CHOP) were used for elderly patients. HBsAg seropositivity was associated with a significantly shorter PFS than HBsAg seronegativity when patients were treated with rituximab or CHOP-based regimens. Compared with CHOP, the HD-AraC regimen was associated with longer PFS in HBsAg+ patients. Treatment with a Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor (BTKi) alone can also cause HBV reactivation. Among the 74 patients who underwent targeted deep sequencing (TDS), the nonsynonymous mutation load of HBsAg+ MCL patients was greater than that of HBsAg- MCL patients. HDAC1, TRAF5, FGFR4, SMAD2, JAK3, SMC1A, ZAP70, BLM, CDK12, PLCG2, SMO, TP63, NF1, PTPR, EPHA2, RPTOR and FIP1L1 were significantly enriched in HBsAg+ MCL patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite the World Health Organisation certifying China malaria-free in 2021, the risk of local transmission caused by imported malaria cases remains a significant clinical and public health issue. It is necessary to present the changing trends of malaria in China and discuss the role of travel medicine services in consolidating malaria elimination. METHODS: This study systematically reviewed articles and reports related to human malaria from 2013 to 2022 published in international and Chinese databases. Data on malaria (i.e. number of cases, Plasmodium spp., diagnostic method, country of acquisition, provinces with high risk of re-introduction and transmission) were collected and synthesised, then summarised using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Overall, 24 758 cases of malaria (>99.5% laboratory confirmed, > 99.2% imported, 0.5% fatal) were reported in China from 2013 to 2022, with a downward trend over the years (4128 cases in 2013 compared to 843 cases in 2022; χ2 trend p-value = 0.005). The last locally acquired case was reported in 2017. P. falciparum (65.5%) was the most common species identified, followed by P. vivax (20.9%) and P. ovale (10.0%). Two Pheidole knowlesi cases were also identified in 2014 and 2017 in returned travellers from Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively. The most common countries of malaria acquisition were Ghana, Angola, and Myanmar. P. vivax was mainly detected in returned travellers from Myanmar, while P. falciparum and P. ovale were detected in travellers from Sub-Saharan Africa. Imported cases were mainly reported in Yunnan, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guangxi, Shandong, Zhejiang, and Henan provinces, where large numbers of Chinese people travel overseas for work. CONCLUSION: Returned travellers from malaria-endemic countries pose a significant risk of malaria re-introduction to China. Travel medicine should be strengthened to improve the capacity and accessibility of both pre- and post-travel services, including malaria prophylaxis and prompt diagnosis of illness in returned travellers.

Netrins, a family of secreted and membrane-associated proteins, can regulate axonal guidance, morphogenesis, angiogenesis, cell migration, cell survival, and tumorigenesis. Four secreted netrins (netrin 1, 3, 4 and 5) and two glycosylphosphatidylinositols-anchored membrane proteins, netrin-G1 and G2, have been identified in mammals. Netrins and their receptors can serve as a biomarker and molecular therapeutic target for pathological differentiation, diagnosis and prognosis of malignant cancers. We review here the potential roles of the netrins family and their receptors in cancer.

PURPOSE: To assess the predictive value of an ultrasound-based radiomics-clinical nomogram for grading residual cancer burden (RCB) in breast cancer patients. METHODS: This retrospective study of breast cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant therapy (NAC) and ultrasound scanning between November 2020 and July 2023. First, a radiomics model was established based on ultrasound images. Subsequently, multivariate LR (logistic regression) analysis incorporating both radiomic scores and clinical factors was performed to construct a nomogram. Finally, Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis and decision curve analysis (DCA) were employed to evaluate and validate the diagnostic accuracy and effectiveness of the nomogram. RESULTS: A total of 1122 patients were included in this study. Among them, 427 patients exhibited a favorable response to NAC chemotherapy, while 695 patients demonstrated a poor response to NAC therapy. The radiomics model achieved an AUC value of 0.84 in the training cohort and 0.83 in the validation cohort. The ultrasound-based radiomics-clinical nomogram achieved an AUC value of 0.90 in the training cohort and 0.91 in the validation cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound-based radiomics-clinical nomogram can accurately predict the effectiveness of NAC therapy by predicting RCB grading in breast cancer patients.

The aim of the study was to develop soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) -carboxylated nanocellulose (CNC) blending films with enhanced mechanical and barrier properties to be used as a tear-free and edible packaging materials. The films were formed by casting method, with CNC as the strengthening unit and glycerol as the plasticizer. The effect of CNC on structural and physical performances of the SSPS-CNC films were studied. SEM indicated that the film will stratify with excess CNC (10 %), but the film remains intact and compact. Incorporation of CNC into SSPS films did not change peak position in the XRD pattern significantly. Hydrogen bonds among SSPS, glycerol and CNC were indicated by the FTIR spectra. The compounding of CNC greatly lessened the light transmittance and hydrophilicity (CA increased from 55.42° to 70.67°), but perfected the barrier (WVP decreased from 3.595 × 10-10 to 2.593 × 10-10 g m-1 s-1 Pa-1) and mechanical properties (TS improved from 0.806 to 1.317 MPa). The results of packaging dehydrated vegetable indicated that the SSPS-8CNC film can effectively inhibit the packaged cabbage absorption water vapor. As a consequence, SSPS film perfected by CNC is hopeful to pack dehydrated vegetables in instant foods.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an environmental contaminant ubiquitous in water resources, which as a xenobiotic and carcinogenic agent, severely endangers human health. The development of techniques for its efficient removal is therefore highly sought after. Herein, we demonstrate an unprecedented zirconium-based MOF (PCN-999) possessing Zr6 and biformate-bridged (Zr6)2 clusters simultaneously, which exhibits an exceptional PFOA uptake of 1089 mg/g (2.63 mmol/g), representing a ca. 50% increase over the previous record for MOFs. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and computational analysis revealed that the (Zr6)2 clusters offer additional open coordination sites for hosting PFOA. The coordinated PFOAs further enhance the interaction between coordinated and free PFOAs for physical adsorption, boosting the adsorption capacity to an unparalleled high standard. Our findings represent a major step forward in the fundamental understanding of the MOF-based PFOA removal mechanism, paving the way toward the rational design of next-generation adsorbents for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) removal.
