RESUMEN

Objectives: We explored the relationship between blood pressure variability (BPV) during craniotomy aneurysm clipping and short-term prognosis in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage to provide a new method to improve prognosis of these patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the differences between patient groups with favorable modified Rankin Scale (mRS ≤ 2) and unfavorable (mRS > 2) prognosis, and examined the association between intraoperative BPV and short-term prognosis. Results: The intraoperative maximum systolic blood pressure (SBPmax, p = 0.005) and the coefficient of variation of diastolic blood pressure (DBPCV, p = 0.029) were significantly higher in the favorable prognosis group. SBPmax (OR 0.88, 95%CI 0.80-0.98) and Neu% (OR 1.22, 95%CI 1.03-1.46) were independent influence factors on prognosis. Patients with higher standard deviations of SBP (82.7% vs. 56.7%; p = 0.030), DBP (82.7% vs. 56.7%; p = 0.030), and DBPCV (82.7% vs. 56.7%; p = 0.030) had more favorable prognosis. Conclusion: Higher SBPmax (≤180 mmHg) during the clipping is an independent protective factor for a 90-day prognosis. These results highlight the importance of blood pressure (BP) control for improved prognosis; higher short-term BPV during clipping may be a precondition for a favorable prognosis.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to explore the regulatory effects and associated mechanisms of adiponectin on apoptosis and proliferation in the LN18 glioma cell line through the AMPK and Akt signaling pathways. Additionally, we sought to elucidate the impact of adiponectin on the chemosensitivity of the LN18 glioma cell line to temozolomide (TMZ). The proliferation rate of glioma cells treated with adiponectin was assessed using the cholecystokinin (CCK8) assay. The Western blot analysis was employed to assess the expression of p-Akt, p-AMPK, p-mTOR, cleaved caspase3, Bax, Cyclin D1, and Cyclin B1 following adiponectin treatment. Cell apoptosis was quantified using AnnexinV/PI flow cytometry, while changes in the cell cycle were detected using PI staining flow cytometry. The findings revealed that adiponectin upregulates p-AMPK expression and downregulates p-mTOR expression in the PTEN wild-type glioma cell line LN18, with no discernible effect on p-Akt expression. Moreover, adiponectin inhibits the proliferation rate of the PTEN wild-type glioma cell line LN18, enhances the expression of cleaved caspase3 and Bax, and significantly elevates the apoptosis rate, as evidenced by AnnexinV/PI flow cytometry. Adiponectin was observed to suppress the expression of Cyclin D1 and Cyclin B1, increase the number of cells in the G1 phase, and promote autophagy. Additionally, adiponectin augments the expression of Beclin1 and the ratio of LC3II/I in the PTEN wild-type glioma cell line LN18, while decreasing p62 expression. In conclusion, this study posits that adiponectin holds therapeutic promise for glioma treatment. Furthermore, adiponectin enhances the inhibitory effect of TMZ on the proliferation rate of LN18 cells when treated with 0.1 mM and 1 mM TMZ. These results collectively suggest that adiponectin impedes proliferation, encourages apoptosis and autophagy in the LN18 glioma cell line, and heightens its sensitivity to the chemotherapeutic drug TMZ.

RESUMEN

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of using a newly formulated magnesium-rich artificial cerebrospinal fluid (MACSF) as an alternative to normal saline (NS) for intraoperative irrigation during aneurysm clipping in improving the prognosis of patients with Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Methods: Patients with aSAH who underwent intraoperative irrigation with MACSF or NS during the clipping in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi 'an Jiaotong University from March 2019 to March 2022 were selected as MACSF group and NS group, respectively. The primary prognostic indicators were the incidence of favorable outcomes (mRS 0-2). The secondary outcome measures included cerebral vasospasm (CVS), mortality, total hospital stay, and intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Safety was evaluated based on the occurrence rates of hypermagnesemia, meningitis, and hydrocephalus. Results: Overall, 34 and 37 patients were enrolled in the MACSF and NS groups, respectively. At 90 days after aSAH onset, the proportion of favorable prognosis in the MACSF group was significantly higher than that in the NS group (p = 0.035). The incidence of CVS within 14 days after surgery was significantly lower in the MACSF group than that in the NS group (p = 0.026). The mortality rate in the MACSF group was significantly lower than in the NS group (p = 0.048). The median lengths of hospital stay (p = 0.008) and ICU stay (p = 0.018) were significantly shorter in the MACSF group than in the NS group. No significant differences were observed in safety measures. Conclusion: Using MACSF as an irrigation fluid for aneurysm clipping can significantly improve the 90-day prognosis of patients with aSAH, which may be related to the reduced incidence of CVS. RESUMEN

Inland waters (IW), estuarine areas (EA), and offshore areas (OA) function as aquatic systems in which the transport of carbon components results in the release of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Interconnected subsystems exhibit a greater greenhouse effect than individual systems. Despite this, there is a lack of research on how carbon loading and its components impact GHG emissions in various aquatic systems. In this study, we analyzed 430 aquatic sites to explore trade-off mechanisms among dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and GHGs. The results revealed that IW emerged as the most significant GHG source, possessing a comprehensive global warming potential (GWP) of 0.78 ± 0.08 (10-2 Pg CO2-ep ha-1 year-1) for combined carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. This surpassed the cumulative potentials of EA and OA (0.35 ± 0.05 (10-2 Pg CO2-ep ha-1 year-1)). Additionally, structural equation modeling indicated that GHG emissions resulted from a combination of carbon component loading and environmental factors. DOC exhibited a positive correlation with GWPs when influenced by biodegradable DOC. Total alkalinity and pH influenced DIC, leading to elevated pCO2 in aquatic systems, thereby enhancing GWPs. Predictive modeling using backpropagation artificial neural networks (BP-ANN) for GWPs, incorporating carbon components and environmental factors, demonstrated a good fit (R2 = 0.6078, RMSEaverage = 0.069, p > 0.05) between observed and predicted values. Enhancing the estimation of aquatic region feedback to GHG changes was achieved by incorporating corresponding water quality parameters. In summary, this study underscores the pivotal role of carbon components and environmental factors in aquatic regions for GHG emissions. The application of BP-ANN to estimate greenhouse effects from aquatic regions is highlighted, providing theoretical and experimental support for future advancements in monitoring and developing policies concerning the influence of water quality on GHG emissions.

RESUMEN

Saline-alkali land, as one of the farmland problems that seriously threatens grain yield in the 21st century, is widely distributed and has great potential for development. Biochar is a relatively efficient novel soil amendment, which can play an important role in alleviating the soil acid-base barrier, soil pollution control, carbon sequestration, and fertilizer slow release and has a great prospect in promoting sustainable agricultural development. In recent years, the research and application of biochar to improve saline-alkali soil have attracted much attention. However, due to the complexity and heterogeneity of the structural components of biochar, the improvement effect of biochar on saline-alkali soil is highly uncertain, and there is also a lack of systematic summary and in-depth discussion of the key mechanisms, which limits the further popularization and application of biochar technology in the improvement of saline-alkali soil. This study comprehensively analyzed the effects of biochar on physicochemical properties, nutrient availability, and biological characteristics of saline-alkali soil; summarized the improvement effects of biochar and modified biochar on saline-alkali soil and their effects on quality and efficiency; and elucidated the possible mechanism of biochar in the improvement of saline-alkali soil. The future research prospect of biochar was discussed in order to provide reference for further research and development of green, efficient, and accurate improvement technology of biochar in saline-alkali soil and its popularization and application.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to study the primary risk factors for the long-term trends of mortality rates in ischemic stroke (IS) in China. METHODS: Using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) database, research was conducted on the 11 primary risk factors for the mortality rates of IS in China from 1990 to 2019. This study employed joinpoint regression software and the age-period-cohort method to evaluate the trends of mortality rates divided by age, period, and cohort over time. RESULTS: From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) caused by a diet high in red meat and high body mass index in China showed an upward trend. ASMR increased first and then decreased due to smoking, diet high in sodium, particulate matter pollution, high fasting plasma glucose, and high systolic blood pressure. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), kidney dysfunction, low temperature, and lead exposure remained relatively stable during this period. In the 35-45 age group, the mortality rate of IS due to high LDL-C was up to about 60%, and smoking affected men more than women. Overall, high LDL-C, high systolic blood pressure, and particulate matter pollution were the most common risk factors in patients with IS. The risk of death rose with age. The period and cohort relative risks showed that metabolic risk factors had the greatest impact on the mortality of IS. CONCLUSION: Metabolic risk factors have become the primary risk factors for the ASMR of IS in China. Relevant authorities should pay attention to their long-term effects on IS. Effective public health policies and interventions should be implemented to reduce the burden of IS.

RESUMEN

The fabrication of low-cost, effective, and highly integrated nanostructured materials through simple and reproducible methods for high-energy-density supercapacitors is highly desirable. Herein, an activated carbon cloth (ACC) is designed as the functional scaffold for supercapacitors and treated hydrothermally to deposit NiCo nanoneedles working as internal core, followed by a dip-dry coating of NiOOH nanoflakes core-shell and uniform hydrothermal deposition of CoMoO4 nanosheets serving as an external shell. The structured core-shell heterostructure ACC@NiCo@NiOOH@CoMoO4 electrode resulted in exceptional specific areal capacitance of 2920 mF cm-2 and exceptional cycling stability for 10 000 cycles. Moreover, the fabricated electrode is developed into an asymmetric supercapacitor which demonstrates excellent areal capacitance, energy density, and power density within the broad potential window of 1.7 V with a cycling life of 92.4% after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles, which reflects excellent cycle life. The distinctive core-shell structure, highly conductive substrate, and synergetic effect of coated material results in more electrochemical active sites and flanges for effective electrons and ion transportation. This unique technique provides a new perspective for cost-efficient supercapacitor applications.

RESUMEN

Ischemic stroke is featured with high incidence, mortality, and disability. The aim of this study is to use Global Burden of Disease database to describe and compare the burden of ischemic stroke in mainland China and Taiwan province and to further predict the expected changes in the next 11 years using statistical modeling methods. Information on ischemic stroke incidence and mortality in China (mainland and Taiwan province) during 1990-2019 was obtained from the Global Burden of Disease database to analyze the effects of region, gender, and age on the incidence and mortality of ischemic stroke in China. The autoregressive integrated moving average model was used to predict the age-standardized incidence rate and age-standardized mortality rate of ischemic stroke in males and females in mainland China and Taiwan province in the next 11 years. The period from 1990 to 2019 witnessed an overall upward trend in the number of incidence and deaths in mainland China and Taiwan province. In 2019, there were nearly 2.87 million ischemic incidence cases with stroke in mainland China, with more female patients than male in the age group of over 60 years. Among the nearly 1.03 million deaths, the death toll of men under the age of 85 years was higher than that of women, while in Taiwan province, the number of incidence was 28 771, with more female patients of all ages than male. Among the 6788 deaths, the death toll of men under the age of 80 years was higher than that of women. In 2019, the age group with the highest number of patients in the two regions was 65-69 years, while the highest number of deaths was found in people aged 85 years and above. As our autoregressive integrated moving average model predicted, the age-standardized incidence rate value of ischemic stroke is expected to be 163.23/100 000 persons in mainland China by 2030, which would continue to increase, while the age-standardized mortality rate value of ischemic stroke is expected to be 16.41/100 000 persons in Taiwan province by 2030, which showed a decreasing trend. Disease burden of ischemic stroke is still increasing in mainland China and Taiwan province, and health resources should be deployed to implement effective prevention and control strategies, taking into account region, gender, and age.

RESUMEN

Background: Severe cerebral artery embolism is a rare complication of facial autologous fat injection. However, its incidence has markedly increased with the recent rise in facial cosmetic procedures. Case presentation: We report a 31-year-old Chinese woman who presented with unconsciousness 6 h after having undergone a facial autologous fat injection. A neurological examination revealed stupor, bilaterally diminished pupillary light reflexes, right-sided central facial palsy, and no reaction to pain stimulation of right limbs. Diffusion-weighted imaging displayed patchy hyperintense lesions in the left frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes. Magnetic resonance angiography demonstrated fat embolism in the left internal carotid artery, anterior cerebral artery, and middle cerebral artery. We immediately performed mechanical thrombectomy under sufficient preoperative preparations but failed to achieve complete recanalization. Pathological examination of the embolus confirmed the presence of adipocytes. Although we actively administered symptomatic and supportive treatments, the patient eventually died due to the progression of cerebral herniation and systemic infection. Conclusion: Due to the ineffectiveness of current treatment and the inferior prognosis, fat embolism, a severe complication of autologous fat graft, should draw the attention of both plastic surgeons and neurologists so that actions may be taken for both its prevention and treatment.

RESUMEN

Using three-dimensional current collectors (3DCC) as frameworks for lithium metal anodes (LMAs) is a promising approach to inhibit dendrite growth. However, the intrinsically accumulated current density on the top surface and limited Li-ion transfer in the interior of 3DCC still lead to the formation of lithium dendrites, which can pose safety risks. In this study, it reports that gradient lithiophilic structures can induce uniform lithium deposition within the interior of the 3DCC, greatly suppressing dendrite formation, as confirmed by COMSOL simulations and experimental results. With this concept, a gradient-structured zinc oxide-loaded copper foam (GSZO-CF) is synthesized via an easy solution-combustion method at low cost. The resulting Li@GSZO-CF symmetric cells demonstrate stable cycling performance for over 800 cycles, with an ultra-deep capacity of 10 mAh cm-2 even under an ultra-high current density of 50 mA cm-2 , the top results reported in the literature. Moreover, when combined with a LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode under a low negative/positive (N/P) capacity ratio of 2.9, the Li@GSZO-CF||LFP full cells exhibit stable performance for 200 cycles, with a discharge capacity of 130 mAh g-1 and retention of 85.5% at a charging/discharging rate of 1C. These findings suggest a promising strategy for the development of new-generation LMAs.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities and silent vascular brain injury as defined by cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a stroke-free community-based population. METHODS: A total of 5888 participants were studied from the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), a prospective cohort of community-living older adults. Standard 12-lead ECGs measured prior to MRI scan were used. MRI scans were conducted at years 4-6 and 10-11. The primary outcome was presence of incident covert brain infarcts (CBIs) on the 2nd MRI examination, excluding previous CBIs and stroke occurrence. Secondary outcomes included white matter, ventricular, and sulcal atrophy on the 1st MRI. Logistic and multiple linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between ECG findings and silent vascular brain injury. RESULTS: Left axis deviation before MRI scan was related to presence of incident CBIs (odds ratio [OR]: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.01-2.08, p = .047). A long QT interval was associated with severe white matter hyperintensity (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.04-1.77, p = .024). Minor Q and QS waves with ST-T abnormalities were positively related to sulcal atrophy (ß: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.06-0.81, p = .023). CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that ECG abnormalities were related to presence of CBIs, white matter hyperintensity, and sulcal atrophy on MRI in a stroke-free relderly population. Specifically, those with left axis deviation had an increased risk of presence of CBIs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation nursing is considered an indispensable part of the cerebral infarction treatment system. The hospital-community-family trinity rehabilitation nursing model can provide continuous nursing services across hospitals, communities, and families for patients. AIM: To explore the application of a hospital-community-family rehabilitation nursing model combined with motor imagery therapy in patients with cerebral infarction. METHODS: From January 2021 to December 2021, 88 patients with cerebral infarction were divided into a study (n = 44) and a control (n = 44) group using a simple random number table. The control group received routine nursing and motor imagery therapy. The study group was given hospital-community-family trinity rehabilitation nursing based on the control group. Motor function (FMA), balance ability (BBS), activities of daily living (BI), quality of life (SS-QOL), activation status of the contralateral primary sensorimotor cortical area to the affected side, and nursing satisfaction were evaluated before and after intervention in both groups. RESULTS: Before intervention, FMA and BBS were similar (P > 0.05). After 6 months' intervention, FMA and BBS were significantly higher in the study than in the control group (both P < 0.05). Before intervention, BI and SS-QOL scores were not different between the study and control group (P > 0.05). However, after 6 months' intervention, BI and SS-QOL were higher in the study than in the control group (P < 0.05). Before intervention, activation frequency and volume were similar between the study and the control group (P > 0.05). After 6 months' intervention, the activation frequency and volume were higher in the study than in the control group (P < 0.05). The reliability, empathy, reactivity, assurance, and tangibles scores for quality of nursing service were higher in the study than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Combining a hospital-community-family trinity rehabilitation nursing model and motor imagery therapy enhances the motor function and balance ability of patients with cerebral infarction, improving their quality of life.

RESUMEN

In this work, the ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) was modified by a phosphazene compound to prepare a novel amorphous derivate (ß-CDCP), which was combined with the ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as a synergistic flame retardant (FR) of the bio-based poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA). The effects of the APP/ß-CDCP on the thermal stability, combustion behavior, pyrolysis process, fire resistance performance and crystallizability of the PLA were investigated comprehensively and in depth by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, limited oxygen index (LOI) analysis, UL-94 test, cone calorimetry measurement, TG-infrared (TG-IR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer, Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry. The PLA/5%APP/10%ß-CDCP showed a highest LOI of 33.2 %, passed V-0 rating and exhibited self-extinguish phenomenon in the UL-94 test. Also, it presented a lowest peak of heat release rate, total heat release, peak of smoke production rate and total smoke release, and a highest char yield treated by cone calorimetry analysis. In addition, the 5%APP/10%ß-CDCP shortened significantly crystallization time and enhanced crystallization rate of the PLA. Gas phase and intumescent condensed phase fire proofing mechanisms are proposed to elucidate enhanced fire resistance in this system in detail.

RESUMEN

Electrolyte modulation and electrode structure design are two common strategies to suppress dendrites growth on Li metal anode. In this work, a self-adaptive electrode construction method to suppress Li dendrites growth is reported, which merges the merits of electrolyte modulation and electrode structure design strategies. In detail, negatively charged titania nanosheets with densely packed nanopores on them are prepared. These holey nanosheets in the electrolyte move spontaneously onto the anode under electrical field, building a mesoporous structure on the electrode surface. The as-formed porous electrode has large surface area with good lithiophilicity, which can efficiently transfer lithium ion (Li+ ) inside the electrode, and induce the genuine lithium plating/stripping. Moreover, the negative charges and nanopores on the sheets can also regulate the lithium-ion flux to promote uniform deposition of Li metal. As a result, the symmetric and full cells using the holey titania nanosheets containing electrolyte, show much better performance than the ones using electrolyte without holey nanosheets inside. This work points out a new route for the practical applications of Li-metal batteries.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between obesity and cognitive impairment (CI) is highly heterogeneous in previous studies, which may be due to insufficient consideration of anthropometric indicators and sex. This study compared the cross-sectional relationships among body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and CI among people aged ≥40 years, and sex-specific relationships were also considered. METHODS: This was a population-based cross-sectional study with a cluster sampling design. CI was defined as a Mini-Mental State Examination score lower than the cutoff value. Multivariate logistic regression was used. BMI and WHR were fitted as both restricted cubic splines and categorical data. Stratified analysis and interaction analysis were performed to explore the sex-specific relationship. RESULTS: A total of 1,792 subjects (40.5% male) were analyzed, and 230 were confirmed to have CI. The relationships among BMI, WHR, and CI were significant (poverall = 0.023, pnonlinear = 0.097; poverall = 0.017, pnonlinear = 0.078, respectively) but exhibited an opposite trend in the total population in the analyses with BMI and WHR as restricted cubic splines. Further categorical analyses showed that subjects with a BMI <23 kg/m2 tended to have a higher risk of CI than those with BMI ≥23 kg/m2 (16.2% vs. 11.8%, p = 0.017; OR = 1.366 [0.969-1.926], p = 0.075), and subjects with a WHR >0.92 had a significantly higher risk of CI than those with a WHR ≤0.92 (11.7% vs. 16.2%, p = 0.011; OR = 1.619 [1.161-2.258], p = 0.005). In addition, the relationship between a low BMI and CI was more significant in males (p = 0.034), while the relationship between a high WHR and CI was more significant in females (p = 0.002). Further studies are needed to confirm the sex differences because of the marginal significance result in the interaction analysis (p = 0.051 for interaction term BMI × sex; p = 0.056 for interaction term WHR × sex). CONCLUSION: The relationships among BMI, WHR, and CI exhibit an opposite trend. A low BMI or high WHR was positively associated with CI, which was more prominent in males for a low BMI and females for a high WHR.

RESUMEN

Bacterial communities are highly sensitive to environmental changes, but their metabolic functions may be convergent under similar ecological conditions. In order to test this environmental attribute of the bacterial community and verify the feasibility in using the bacterial metabolic data to divide functional units at the river basin scale, the surface sediments in three continuous spatial units of the main stream (MS), left tributary (LT), and right tributary (RT) of the Duliujian River basin were selected as the research objects. Therefore, 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing and the PICRUSt platform were used to analyze the bacterial diversity and metabolic function of sediments in different units. The results showed that there were no significant differences for the Shannon and Simpson indices between the different river channels (P>0.05); however, the bacterial diversity indices of Chao1, ACE, Observed_species, and PD_whole_tree of LT and RT were significantly higher than those of the MS (P<0.05). Moreover, the dominant bacterial phyla were not significantly different among the different river channels. In the present study, a total of 41 metabolic pathways were predicted based on the KEGG database, among which 34 metabolic pathways such as membrane transport, amino acid metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism were significantly different. The functional metabolic abundance was higher in MS than that in RT and LT (P<0.05); however, there was no significant difference between those of RT and LT (P>0.05). Except for exchangeable phosphorus and nitrate nitrogen, there were no significant differences in other physicochemical properties among the different river channels (P>0.05). Furthermore, pH and iron/aluminum-phosphorus were found to significantly affect the bacterial structure, and SOM and TN were found to significantly affect the bacterial metabolic function. Overall, the sediments of MS and tributaries (LT and RT) of the river were clearly divided into level-1 and level-2 groups, indicating that the metabolic abundance of the bacterial community can be used as the key indicator in the division of functional units at the river basin scale. This study provided a theoretical basis and technical support for ecological functional division and management in coastal river basins.

RESUMEN

Three dimensional (3D) hosts have been recognized as effective current collectors for Li metal anodes because of their physical suppression of the lithium dendrites growth. A lithiophilic surface layer on them could increase the Li metal nucleation sites, further regulating the genuine plating of Li metal. The current strategies to construct this lithiophilic layer on 3D structure is complex and not suitable for the scalable fabrication of Li metal anode. In this work, we developed a facile method to grow vertically aligned ZnO nanoflakes on the surface of 3D Cu foam through an electrochemical synthetic process, which physically suppressed the Li dendrites growth due to the unique structure during the Li plating/stripping process. Moreover, these lithiophilic flakes effectively increase the specific surface area of the anode and Li metal nucleation sites number, which reduces the local current densities, leading to the formation of a robust SEI and further suppressing the Li dendrites growth. Consequently, the performances of the symmetric Li plated Cu foam/Li cell and the Li plated Cu foam/LiFePO4 full cell have been greatly enhanced after the growth of vertically aligned ZnO nanoflakes on the Cu foam surface, including capacity, cycling stability, overpotential, and rate capability.
