BACKGROUND: Cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), threatens many crops. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton has been planted to control this severe pest in northern Xinjiang, China. In 2021 and 2022, we monitored the activity densities of H. armigera males using sex pheromone traps in Bt cotton and non-Bt maize fields. We assessed how much of the population variation of cotton bollworm in the fields within the Bt cotton planting area could be explained by (i) landscape composition [including the proportion of Bt cotton among total area of host crops (cotton, maize, wheat and vegetables)], (ii) landscape configuration (patch density - i.e. the number of patches within a given area) across 0.5-2.0 km scales, or (iii) the population density of the previous pest generation. RESULTS: Cotton bollworm activity-density exhibited two distinct peaks annually (mid- to late May and mid-July each year), with the number of males caught during the second peak significantly and positively correlated with the first peak's numbers. The suppressive effect of the proportion of Bt cotton in the landscape on bollworms was more pronounced at larger scales, and patch density had a significant positive effect on bollworm activity density. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support (i) the promotion of Bt cotton in northwestern China has reduced and suppressed the occurrence of cotton bollworms at the landscape scale and (ii) the importance of controlling spring populations for effective summer outbreak management, and (iii) that cotton bollworm control should be coordinated at a large scale across multiple crop fields. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Following the publication of this paper, it was drawn to the Editor's attention by a concerned reader that certain of the TUNEL assay data shown in Fig. 1C on p. 2853 and Fig. 5H on p. 2857 were strikingly similar to data that had already been published in different form in different articles written by different authors at different research institutes, or were submitted for publication at around the same time (a number of of which have now been retracted). Owing to the fact that the contentious data in the above article had already been published, or were already under consideration for publication, prior to its submission to Molecular Medicine Reports, the Editor has decided that this paper should be retracted from the Journal. Human society is anchored in the global agroecosystem. For millennia, this system has provided humans with copious supplies of nutrient-rich food. Yet, through chemical intensification and simplification, vast shares of present-day farmland derive insufficient benefits from biodiversity and prove highly vulnerable to biotic stressors. Here, we argue that on-farm action centered on biological control can effectively defuse pest risk by bolstering foundational ecosystem services. By harnessing plant, animal and microbial biodiversity, biological control offers safe, efficacious and economically-sound plant health solutions and coevolved options for invasive species mitigation. In recent years, its scientific foundation has been fortified and solutions have been refined for myriad ecologically brittle systems. Yet, for biological control to be mainstreamed, it needs to be rebooted, intertwined with (on- and off-farm) agroecological tactics and refurbished - from research, policy and regulation, public-private partnerships up to modes of implementation. Misaligned incentives (for chemical pesticides) and adoption barriers further need to be removed, while its scientific underpinnings should become more interdisciplinary, policy-relevant, solution-oriented and linked with market demand. Thus, biological control could ensure human wellbeing in a nature-friendly manner and retain farmland ecological functioning under global change.

Introduction: The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of vitamin D supplementation on the muscle strength of the elderly. Methods: This retrospective, propensity score-matched study included 160 middle-aged and elderly individuals from a community in Beijing, China. The control group (n=110) received health education and lifestyle guidance, while the intervention group (n=50) was given oral vitamin D supplementation in addition to health education and lifestyle guidance. All participants underwent laboratory tests, muscle function, and physical function at baseline and follow-up. Results: In the propensity score-matched cohort of 41 patients per group, the levels of serum calcium and 25-hydroxyvitamin D in both groups were improved significantly by the end of the study (p<0.05), with the intervention group showing a more significant improvement. The muscle strength of the left lower limb in the intervention group significantly increased after the intervention (p<0.05). The results also showed that the grip strength and pinch strength of the patients in both groups increased after the intervention, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p<0.05). Discussion: The findings of this study suggest that vitamin D supplementation, in conjunction with lifestyle guidance and health education, is beneficial for enhancing the upper and lower limb strength of patients.

Previous studies have shown that the survival and reproduction of Hippodamia variegata are increasingly harmed by progressive increases in temperature (from 32 °C to 35 °C and 38 °C). In this study, transcriptome sequencing analysis was performed on H. variegata, after being exposed to different temperatures (from 32 to 38 °C) for 24 h, using high-throughput sequencing technology. We found the largest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the 35 °C vs. 32 °C group (1151) followed by the 38 °C vs. 32 °C group (1054) and then the 38 °C vs. 35 °C group (901), indicating that H. variegata expressed the largest number of newly mobilized genes under medium-high temperature (35 °C). Gene functional analysis showed that a large number of DEGs were involved in "Catalytic activity", "Oxidoreductase activity", "Metabolic pathways", and "Longevity regulating pathway-multiple species" gene groups. We randomly selected nine DEGs for validation using qRT-PCR. The results of qRT-PCR were consistent with the transcriptome data, confirming their reliability. Finally, the RNAi results showed that adult survival, longevity, and fecundity were lower in the group in which gene expression of the heat shock proteins (Hsp70-01 and Hsp68) was suppressed than in the control group (injection ds-GFP) at all the experimental temperatures (32, 35, and 38 °C). Our results indicate the important role of the heat shock proteins (Hsp70-01 and Hsp68) in resistance to high-temperature stress in H. variegata and provide a molecular basis for analyzing its thermotolerance mechanism.

The design of bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a hierarchical structure is important to improve the electrocatalytic performance of catalysts due to their synergistic effect on different metal ions. In this work, the catalyst comprises bimetallic iron-nickel MOF-derived FeNi phosphides, intricately integrated with phosphorus-doped reduced graphene oxide architectures (FeNi2P-C/P-rGA) through the hydrothermal and phosphating treatments. The hierarchical architecture of the catalyst is beneficial for exposing active sites and facilitating electron transfer. The FeNi2P-C/P-rGA catalyst exhibits excellent performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolytes. Notably, FeNi2P-C/P-rGA requires only the overpotential of 93 and 210 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for the HER and OER with small values of Tafel slope and charge transfer resistance, respectively. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits boosted activity for overall water splitting with a low potential of 1.56 V. This work can be considered to extend the design of multilevel catalysts in the application of water splitting.

The strategic design of a heterostructure catalyst with a core-shell nanoarchitecture is imperative for enhancing the efficiency of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, the core-shell catalyst comprising the rhenium disulfide nanosheets was vertically integrated onto a hollow nickel sulfide (NiS@ReS2) via coprecipitation and hydrothermal treatment. The morphology involves the sulfurization of a nickel-based Prussian blue analogue, effectively mitigating the aggregation of ReS2 nanosheets and maximizing the exposed active sites. By the synergistic effect of morphological design and heterostructure formation, the overpotential of NiS@ReS2 is 136 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in an alkaline electrolyte, and the rapid kinetics is confirmed by the small Tafel slope and low charge transfer resistance during the HER process. Moreover, the electrocatalytic durability of NiS@ReS2 is elucidated, and the boosted catalytic activity of NiS@ReS2 is confirmed by density functional theory. This study unveils a promising method for advancing ReS2-based electrocatalysts with potential implications for producing hydrogen.

BACKGROUND: Numerous insect species undertake long-distance migrations on an enormous scale, with great implications for ecosystems. Given that take-off is the point where it all starts, whether and how the external light and internal circadian rhythm are involved in regulating the take-off behaviour remains largely unknown. Herein, we explore this issue in a migratory pest, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, via behavioural observations and RNAi experiments. RESULTS: The results showed that C. medinalis moths took off under conditions where the light intensity gradually weakened to 0.1 lx during the afternoon or evening, and the take-off proportions under full spectrum or blue light were significantly higher than that under red and green light. The ultraviolet-A/blue light-sensitive type 1 cryptochrome gene (Cmedcry1) was significantly higher in take-off moths than that of non-take-off moths. In contrast, the expression of the light-insensitive CRY2 (Cmedcry2) and circadian genes (Cmedtim and Cmedper) showed no significant differences. After silencing Cmedcry1, the take-off proportion significantly decreased. Thus, Cmedcry1 is involved in the decrease in light intensity induced take-off behaviour in C. medinalis. CONCLUSIONS: This study can help further explain the molecular mechanisms behind insect migration, especially light perception and signal transmission during take-off phases.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have suggested associations between amount of coffee consumption and decreased risk of neurodegenerative diseases. However, these studies do not consider differences among coffee types, including sweetened, unsweetened, caffeinated, and decaffeinated varieties. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify associations between the consumption of various coffee types (sugar-sweetened, artificially sweetened, unsweetened, caffeinated, and decaffeinated) and risks of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), along with related mortality. METHODS: This prospective study included 204,847 participants (44.7% males) from the UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the associations of coffee type with neurodegenerative outcome. On the basis of coffee consumption, participants were divided into 5 groups: non-coffee consumers, >0-1 cup/d, ≥1-2 cups/d, ≥2-3 cups/d, and ≥3 cups/d. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 9 y, the study documented 1696 cases of ADRD, 1093 cases of PD, and 419 neurodegenerative-related deaths. In the multivariate analysis, compared with non-coffee consumers, those with the highest intake of unsweetened and caffeinated coffee (≥3 cups/d) showed hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 0.75 (0.62, 0.91) for ADRD, 0.71 (0.56, 0.91) for PD, and 0.67 (0.44, 1.01) for neurodegenerative-related death. However, no significant associations were noted in either decaffeinated or sugar/artificially sweetened coffee groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Higher intake of caffeinated coffee, particularly the unsweetened variety, was associated with reduced risks of ADRD and PD. No such associations were observed for sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened coffee.

Abamectin has been extensively used in paddy fields to control insect pests. However, little information is available regarding its effects on non-target insects. In this study, we performed acute (3rd instar larvae) and chronic toxicity (newly hatched larvae <24 h) to determine the toxicity effects of abamectin on Chironomus kiiensis. The median lethal concentration (LC50) values of 24 h and 10 d were 0.57 mg/L and 68.12 µg/L, respectively. The chronic exposure significantly prolonged the larvae growth duration and inhibited pupation and emergence. The transcriptome and biochemical parameters were measured using 3rd instar larvae exposed to acute LC10 and LC25 for 24 h. Transcriptome data indicated that five trypsin and four chymotrypsin genes were downregulated, and RT-qPCR verified a significant expression decrease in trypsin3 and chymotrypsin1 genes. Meanwhile, abamectin could significantly inhibit the activities of the serine proteases trypsin and chymotrypsin. RNA interference showed that silencing trypsin3 and chymotrypsin1 genes led to higher mortality of C. kiiensis to abamectin. In conclusion, these findings indicated that trypsin and chymotrypsin are involved in the abamectin toxicity against C. kiiensis, which provides new insights into the mechanism of abamectin-induced ecotoxicity to chironomids.

Nutrition is a limiting feature of species evolution. The differences in nutritional requirements are the evolutionary result of differential adaptations to environmental changes, explaining differences in their ecological traits. Cnaphalocrocis medinalis and Cnaphalocrocis exigua, two related species of rice leaffolders, have similar morphology and feeding properties but different migration and overwintering behaviors. However, it is unclear whether they have evolved adult nutritional differentiation traits to coexist. To explore this issue, this study examined the effects of carbohydrates and amino acids on their reproductive and demographic parameters. The findings indicate that carbohydrate intake prolonged the longevity and population growth of two rice leaffolders, but amino acid intake promoted egg hatching only. However, nutrient deficiency made it impossible for C. medinalis to reproduce successfully and survive, but it did not affect C. exigua. The population expansion and survival of migratory C. medinalis relied on adult nutritional intake. Conversely, the nutrients necessary for C. exigua overwintering activity mostly came from the storage of larvae. The difference in nutritional requirements for population growth and survival between the two rice leaffolders partially explained their differences in migration and overwintering.

Below-ground herbivory impacts plant development and often induces systemic responses in plants that affect the performance and feeding behavior of above-ground herbivores. Meanwhile, pest-damaged root tissue can enhance a plant's susceptibility to abiotic stress such as salinity. Yet, the extent to which herbivore-induced plant defenses are modulated by such abiotic stress has rarely been studied. In this study, we examine whether root feeding by larvae of the turnip moth, Agrotis segetum (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) affects the performance of the above-ground, sap-feeding aphid Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on cotton, and assess whether those interactions are modulated by salinity stress. In the absence of salinity stress, A. segetum root feeding does not affect A. gossypii development. On the other hand, under intense salinity stress (i.e., 600 mM NaCl), A. segetum root feeding decreases aphid development time by 16.1 % and enhances fecundity by 72.0 %. Transcriptome, metabolome and bioassay trials showed that root feeding and salinity stress jointly trigger the biosynthesis of amino acids in cotton leaves. Specifically, increased titers of valine in leaf tissue relate to an enhanced performance of A. gossypii. Taken together, salinity stress alters the interaction between above- and below-ground feeders by changing amino acid accumulation. Our findings advance our understanding of how plants cope with concurrent biotic and abiotic stressors, and may help tailor plant protection strategies to varying production contexts.

The established role of disturbances in the microbiota-gut-brain axis in the development of diabetic cognitive impairment (DCI) has long been recognized. It has shown the potential of Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) in improving metabolic disorders and exerting anti-inflammatory effects. However, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the specific effects and mechanisms underlying the treatment of DCI with A. muciniphila. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of A. muciniphila in alleviating DCI in db/db mice. Eleven-week-old db/db mice were administered either live or pasteurized A. muciniphila (5 × 109 CFU/200 µL) for a duration of eight weeks. Administering live A. muciniphila significantly ameliorated cognitive impairments, improved the synaptic ultrastructure, and inhibited hippocampal neuron loss in the CA1 and CA3 subregions in db/db mice. Both live and pasteurized A. muciniphila effectively mitigated neuroinflammation. Moreover, live A. muciniphila increased the relative abundance of Lactococcus and Staphylococcus, whereas pasteurized A. muciniphila increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Prevotellaceae_UCG_001, and Alistipes. Supplementation of A. muciniphila also induced alterations in serum and brain metabolites, with a particular enrichment observed in tryptophan metabolism, glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, and pentose and glucuronate interconversions. Correlation analysis further demonstrated a direct and substantial correlation between the altered gut microbiota and the metabolites in the serum and brain tissue. In conclusion, the results indicate that live A. muciniphila demonstrated greater efficacy compared to pasteurized A. muciniphila. The observed protective effects of A. muciniphila against DCI are likely mediated through the neuroinflammation and microbiota-metabolites-brain axis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on the associations between serum urate levels and neurodegenerative outcomes have yielded inconclusive results, and the causality remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether urate levels are associated with the risks of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and neurodegenerative deaths. METHODS: This prospective study included 382,182 participants (45.7% men) from the UK Biobank cohort. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the associations between urate levels and risk of neurodegenerative outcomes. In the Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, urate-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms were identified through a genome-wide association study. Both linear and non-linear MR approaches were utilized to investigate the potential causal associations. RESULTS: During a median follow-up period of 12 years, we documented 5,400 ADRD cases, 2,553 PD cases, and 1,531 neurodegenerative deaths. Observational data revealed that a higher urate level was associated with a decreased risk of ADRD (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.90, 0.96), PD (HR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.82, 0.91), and neurodegenerative death (HR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.83, 0.94). Negative linear associations between urate levels and neurodegenerative events were observed (all P-values for overall < 0.001 and all P-values for non-linearity > 0.05). However, MR analyses yielded no evidence of either linear or non-linear associations between genetically predicted urate levels and the risk of the aforementioned neurodegenerative events. CONCLUSION: Although the prospective cohort study demonstrated that elevated urate levels were associated with a reduced risk of neurodegenerative outcomes, MR analyses found no evidence of causality.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence linking the age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (aCCI), an assessment tool for multimorbidity, to fragility fracture and fracture-related postoperative complications. However, the role of multimorbidity in osteoporosis has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. We aimed to investigate the association between aCCI and the risk of osteoporosis in older adults at moderate to high risk of falling. METHODS: A total of 947 men were included from January 2015 to August 2022 in a hospital in Beijing, China. The aCCI was calculated by counting age and each comorbidity according to their weighted scores, and the participants were stratified into two groups by aCCI: low (aCCI < 5), and high (aCCI ≥5). The Kaplan Meier method was used to assess the cumulative incidence of osteoporosis by different levels of aCCI. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to estimate the association of aCCI with the risk of osteoporosis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was adapted to assess the performance for aCCI in osteoporosis screening. RESULTS: At baseline, the mean age of all patients was 75.7 years, the mean BMI was 24.8 kg/m2, and 531 (56.1%) patients had high aCCI while 416 (43.9%) were having low aCCI. During a median follow-up of 6.6 years, 296 participants developed osteoporosis. Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that participants with high aCCI had significantly higher cumulative incidence of osteoporosis compared with those had low aCCI (log-rank test: P < 0.001). When aCCI was examined as a continuous variable, the multivariable-adjusted model showed that the osteoporosis risk increased by 12.1% (HR = 1.121, 95% CI 1.041-1.206, P = 0.002) as aCCI increased by one unit. When aCCI was changed to a categorical variable, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios associated with different levels of aCCI [low (reference group) and high] were 1.00 and 1.557 (95% CI 1.223-1.983) for osteoporosis (P <  0.001), respectively. The aCCI (cutoff ≥5) revealed an area under ROC curve (AUC) of 0.566 (95%CI 0.527-0.605, P = 0.001) in identifying osteoporosis in older fall-prone men, with sensitivity of 64.9% and specificity of 47.9%. CONCLUSIONS: The current study indicated an association of higher aCCI with an increased risk of osteoporosis among older fall-prone men, supporting the possibility of aCCI as a marker of long-term skeletal-related adverse clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Insects use odor detection to sense their surroundings. Use of volatile compounds, such as essential oils (EOs) of plants, to repel pests and disrupt their olfaction-driven behaviors has great practical potential for use in integrated pest management. Despite the available information on the repellent effects of EOs on herbivorous insects, the olfaction-based mechanisms remain unknown. RESULTS: Y-tube olfactometer tests showed that the EOs of three Lamiaceae plants - Mentha arvensis L., Mentha piperita L. and Lavandula angustifolia Mill. - were significantly repellent to winged cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover. Electrical penetration graph (EPG) tests indicated the EOs reduced phloem feeding and increased the level of non-productive probing by the aphids. The EOs also reduced the fecundity of winged Aphis gossypii. Electrophysiological bioassays and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified five physiologically active volatiles, that is menthone, isomenthone, neomenthol and menthol from Mentha piperita; menthone and menthol from Mentha arvensis; and linalool from L. angustifolia. Behavioral tests confirmed that all five compounds repelled winged Aphis gossypii. Under field conditions, the growth rate of aphid populations after 7 days was significantly lower in fields treated with these compounds than in the control fields. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated that three EOs not only repelled winged Aphis gossypii but also interfered with the aphid's feeding behavior and reduced its fecundity. These EOs and their active constituents have great potential as eco-friendly control products for use against Aphis gossypii. The effects of these EOs also exceed other repellents that only keep pests away from host plants. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Alterative nutritional foods consumed by adult parasitoids play an important role in their fitness and ability to control pests because of food scarcity in many crops. While adult parasitoids feed on various sugars, they vary in their nutritional value for parasitoids. We assessed the effects of seven sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, trehalose, maltose, melezitose, and sorbitol) on the longevity, parasitism ability, parasitism behavior, and flight ability of B. communis, an important parasitoid of cotton aphids. We found that access to glucose, sucrose, or fructose, increased B. communis adult longevity more than the other sugars offered. All sugars except trehalose increased the parasitism rate to more than 50% compared to the starved control (only provided with water). We then compared parasitoid behaviors of wasps fed glucose, sucrose, or fructose to that of the starved control (with access only to water) and found that those fed B. communis spent more time either examining or attacking aphids than parasitoids in the control group, which spent more time walking or resting. Also, consumption of glucose, sucrose, or fructose also significantly improved the flight ability (the total flight distance, flight time, and average flight speed) of B. communis.

Cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover damages plants such as cotton directly by feeding on leaves and indirectly by transmitting viruses and excreting honeydew, which interferes with photosynthesis. The control of A. gossypii is still dominated by the frequent use of insecticides, which leads to a gradual increase in pesticide resistance in A. gossypii. Research is therefore needed on non-pesticide controls. In this study, seven plant essential oils (EOs) of Ocimum sanctum L., Ocimum basilicum L., Ocimum gratissimum L., Mentha piperita L., Mentha arvensis L., Tagetes erecta L., and Lavandula angustifolia Mill. were examined as potential controls for A. gossypii. We used life tables and electrical penetration graphs (EPG) to explore the effects of these EOs on the growth, development, and feeding behavior of A. gossypii, followed by a study of effects of the EOs on honeydew secretion by A. gossypii as a measure of their antifeedant activity. We found that the EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, M. arvensis and T. erecta significantly extended the pre-adult developmental period. Also, adult longevity, number of oviposition days, and total fecundity of A. gossypii treated with the EOs of M. arvensis or T. erecta were all significantly reduced. Aphids treated with the EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, or L. angustifolia showed significant reductions in their net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm), and finite rate of increase (λ), and significant increases in mean generation time (T). In terms of their effects on the feeding behavior of A. gossypii, all seven EOs significantly reduced the total duration of phloem feeding (E2 waves), the number of phloem-feeding bouts, and the proportion of time spent in secretion of saliva into phloem sieve elements (E1 waves) and phloem feeding (E2). The total duration and number of E1 waves (saliva secretion) were significantly reduced by the EOs of O. sanctum, O. gratissimum, and M. arvensis. For C waves (probing in non-vascular tissues), the total duration spent in this behavior was significantly increased by the EOs of O. gratissimum, M. piperita, and L. angustifolia, but the number of such probing events was increased only by L. angustifolia EO. The EOs of O. basilicum, M. arvensis, and T. erecta significantly increased the total duration of ingestion of xylem sap (G waves), while the total time of mechanical difficulty in stylet penetration (F waves) was increased by M. arvensis. The total duration and number of the non-probing events (Np waves) were significantly increased by EOs of O. sanctum and O. basilicum. After treatment with all seven of these EOs, the area covered by honeydew was significantly reduced compared with the control. Studies have analyzed that EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, and T. erecta were most effective, followed by the EOs of M. arvensis and L. angustifolia, and finally the EOs of O. basilicum and O. gratissimum. In the present study, the EOs of O. sanctum, M. piperita, and T. erecta were found to have potential for the development as antifeedants of A. gossypii, and these data provide a basis for future research on non-pesticide chemical control of A. gossypii.

The development of a cost-competitive and efficient electrocatalyst is both attractive and challenging for hydrogen production by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a facile glycol reduction method to construct Ru nanoclusters coupled with hierarchical exfoliated-MXene/reduced graphene oxide architectures (Ru-E-MXene/rGA) is reported. The hierarchical structure, formed by the self-assembly of graphene oxides, can effectively prohibit the self-stacking of MXene nanosheets. Meanwhile, the formation of the MXene/rGA interface can strongly trap the Ru3+ ions, resulting in the uniform distribution of Ru nanoclusters within Ru-E-MXene/rGA. The boosted catalytic activity and underlying catalytic mechanism during the HER process are proved by density functional theory. Ru-E-MXene/rGA exhibits overpotentials of 42 and 62 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline and acidic electrolytes, respectively. The small Tafel slope and charge transfer resistance (Rct) values elucidate its fast dynamic behavior. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves and chronoamperometry test confirm the high stability of Ru-E-MXene/rGA. These results demonstrate that coupling Ru nanoclusters with the MXene/rGA heterostructure represents an efficient strategy for constructing MXene-based catalysts with enhanced HER activity.

Tobacco black shank (TBS), caused by Phytophthora nicotianae, is a severe disease. Plant root exudates play a crucial role in mediating plant-pathogen interactions in the rhizosphere. However, the specific interaction between key secondary metabolites present in root exudates and the mechanisms of disease resistance remains poorly understood. This study conducted a comprehensive comparison via quasi-targeted metabolomic analysis on the root exudate metabolites from the tobacco cultivar Yunyan87 and K326, both before and after inoculation with P. nicotianae. The results showed that the root exudate metabolites changed after P. nicotianae inoculation, and the root exudate metabolites of different tobacco cultivar was significantly different. Furthermore, homovanillic acid, lauric acid, and isoliquiritigenin were identified as potential key compounds for TBS resistance based on their impact on the mycelium growth of the pathogens. The pot experiment showed that isoliquiritigenin reduced the incidence by 55.2%, while lauric acid reduced it by 45.8%. This suggests that isoliquiritigenin and lauric acid have potential applications in the management of TBS. In summary, this study revealed the possible resistance mechanisms of differential metabolites in resistance of commercial tobacco cultivar, and for the first time discovered the inhibitory effects of isoliquiritigenin and homovanillic acid on P. nictianae, and attempt to use plants secondary metabolites of for plant protection.
