RESUMEN

A captive marmoset developed metastatic endometrioid carcinoma (EnC), a rare uterine tumor in non-human primates (NHPs). The neoplasm showed marked microscopical malignant and tubulopapillary aspects, immunopositivity for pan-cytokeratin, CK7, estrogen receptor, and a high mitotic index (Ki-67). These features may contribute to the diagnosis and therapeutics of EnC in NHPs.

RESUMEN

Malarial protozoa commonly infect both wild and captive lizards but the effects on the general health of these animals are not fully understood. We describe four clinical cases of Plasmodium infection in captive black and white tegus (Salvator merianae). The animals presented with lethargy, anorexia, dehydration and stomatitis. Plasmodium infection was identified in blood smears from all animals. Treatment with a sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim combination resolved the infection and clinical improvement was observed within 21 days. This is the first report of successful treatment of clinical plasmodiid infection in captive tegus.

ABSTRACT: Primary gallbladder neoplasms occur infrequently in domestic animals and rarely in wild animals. This article describes a case of gallbladder adenoma in a mongoose ( Mungos mungo) in captivity. Grossly, the gallbladder was moderately distended with a smooth capsular surface. Necropsy showed an irregular, soft, whitish nodule 0.8cm in diameter. Microscopic examination of the nodule showed proliferation of epithelial cells, which projected from the mucosa and formed papillary projections supported by a sparse fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells were well differentiated with mild anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. Based on these histopathological findings, adenoma of the gallbladder was diagnosed.


RESUMO: Neoplasmas primárias de vesícula biliar são incomumente descritas em animais domésticos e, raramente, afetam animais silvestres. Este trabalho tem por objetivo descrever um caso de adenoma de vesícula biliar em mangusto ( Mungos mungo) mantido em cativeiro. Macroscopicamente, a vesícula biliar estava moderadamente distendida, com superfície lisa e, em seu interior, havia um nódulo esbranquiçado, irregular, macio, de 0,8cm de diâmetro. Microscopicamente, havia proliferação neoplásica, epitelial, bem diferenciada, com projeções papilares da mucosa contendo células cilíndricas. Observou-se anisocitose e anisocariose leve. Com base nos achados histopatológicos, foi firmado o diagnóstico de adenoma de vesícula biliar.

Trematodes from the genus Platynosomum have been found to infect Neotropical primates in captivity, but little is known about their pathogeny in such hosts. This study evaluated the physiological effects of natural infection by the liver-dwelling trematode Platynosomum sp. in ten males and ten females of Callithrix penicillata kept in captivity at the Primate Center of the University of Brasília. The marmosets were examined twice, 6 months apart. The following parameters were analyzed: complete blood count, bleeding time, serum total protein, albumin, and the liver enzymes AST and ALT, and both a stool analysis and a liver ultrasonic evaluation were performed. We were able to characterize a group of abnormalities associated with this trematode infection which were mainly derived from the hepatitis caused by it: coagulation disorders, abnormal red blood cells, hypoalbuminemia, and abnormal levels of liver-linked serum enzymes. Eosinophilia and thrombocytopenia were also commonly seen. All of the aforementioned abnormalities were in good accord with typical effects of trematodes on liver parenchyma. We suggest that this set of abnormalities is characteristic of the infection of C. penicillata with Platynosomum sp., and should be among the most prominent aspects that the veterinary surgeon considers when suspecting such an infection. We also suggest that these clinical signs and abnormalities will be similar in other liver-dwelling trematode-infected primate species.
