RESUMEN

When a mass occurs at the staple line following lung resection, it can be difficult to distinguish between local cancer recurrence and granuloma. We present a case of a staple-line granuloma with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography uptake and elevated serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) in a patient with ovarian cancer lung metastasis. After granuloma resection, serum CA19-9 levels normalized, and CA19-9 positive cells were identified in the resected tumor. Therefore, serum CA19-9 elevation does not rule out a staple-line granuloma. Whereas granulomas on computed tomography (CT) scans tend to show smooth shadows along the staple line unilaterally, detailed CT evaluation may help diagnostic differentiation. Differentiation based on imaging and tumor markers has limitations. However, core needle biopsy has the risk of misdiagnosis and tumor cell dissemination, therefore surgical resection should be considered when comprehensive findings indicate a potential recurrence.

INTRODUCTION: The tumor microenvironment of sarcomas has not been studied in detail; in particular, little is known about cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Sarcoma cells are difficult to distinguish from CAFs, either histomorphologically or immunohistochemically. METHODS: We scored the expression of individual CAF markers (fibroblast-activating protein [FAP], CD10, and podoplanin) in the intratumoral and marginal areas of 133 sarcomas. We also examined the association between these markers, as well as the number of CD163-positive macrophages (i.e., tumor-associated macrophages), and clinical outcome. RESULTS: In all cases, the log-rank test revealed that those with high marker scores and macrophage counts (except for marginal CD10+ CAFs) showed significantly worse disease-free survival (DFS). Grade 2/3 cases with high CAF scores (excluding the marginal FAP and CD10 scores) showed significantly worse DFS, whereas those with high intratumoral FAP/CD10 and marginal podoplanin scores showed significantly worse metastasis-free survival (MFS), and those with high intratumoral CD10 score showed significantly worse local recurrence-free survival (LFS). Multivariate analysis identified intratumoral CD10/podoplanin scores and marginal FAP/podoplanin scores as independent prognostic factors for DFS, intratumoral FAP/CD10 and marginal FAP/podoplanin/CD163-positive macrophage scores as independent prognostic factors for MFS, and the intratumoral podoplanin score as an independent prognostic factor for LFS. There was a weak-to-moderate correlation between each score and CD163-positive macrophage counts. CONCLUSION: Patients with high CAF marker expression in the intratumoral and marginal areas have a poorer outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Determining a surgical strategy for early-stage lung cancer requires an accurate histologic diagnosis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) enables reliable diagnosis of histological types but requires more time and more tumor tissue slides than hematoxylin and eosin staining. We aimed to assess the clinical validity of a new rapid multiplex IHC technique utilizing alternating current (AC) mixing for intraoperative lung cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Forty-three patients who underwent radical resection of lung cancers were enrolled in a retrospective observational study. Frozen sections were prepared from lung tumor samples, and rapid IHC employing AC mixing was implemented alongside a multiplex IHC protocol targeting thyroid transcription factor-1 + cytokeratin 5, desmoglein 3 + Napsin A, and p63 + tripartite motif containing 29. We then evaluated the concordance between intraoperative diagnoses derived from rapid multiplex IHC and final pathology. RESULTS: The concordance rate between the pathological diagnosis made with added rapid multiplex IHC and the final pathology was 93.0% (Cohen's 𝜅 coefficient = 0.860 and 95% CI: 0.727-0.993). When considering only adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, the diagnoses were in agreement for all cases. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest rapid multiplex IHC as a promising tool for determining surgical strategies for lung tumors.

PURPOSE: It remains unclear whether combining carmustine wafer (CW) implantation with the standard treatment for adult-type diffuse gliomas is safe and has a prognostic impact. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value and safety of CW implantation. METHODS: Adult patients with IDH-wild-type and -mutant gliomas, grades 3-4 treated with surgical resection, radiotherapy, and temozolomide chemotherapy between 2013 and 2023 were surveyed. CWs were implanted except in cases of intraoperative wide ventricle opening or marked preoperative brain swelling. For survival analyses, a case-matched dataset based on propensity score matching (PSM), including multiple factors (patient background, diagnosis, and extent of resection) was generated. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and frequency of complications of CW implantation (brain edema, infection, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage) were compared between the CW and non-use groups. RESULTS: In total, 127 patients (75 in the CW use group and 52 in the non-use group) were enrolled. Regardless of stratification, no significant differences in PFS and OS were observed between the CW use and non-use groups. The frequency of postoperative brain edema was significantly higher in the CW use group than in the non-use group. An adjusted dataset containing 41 patients in the CW use and nonuse groups was generated. Even after PSM, CW implantation had no prognostic effect. CONCLUSIONS: CW implantation with standard treatment demonstrated little beneficial effect for the present strategy of CW use.

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a heterogeneous disease concept involving various malignant tumors. Understanding its pathophysiology is often difficult, together with its treatment. Here, we present a case of CUP with abdominal lymph node enlargement and elevated carbohydrate antigen 125 levels. It initially resembled a favorable prognosis type similar to ovarian cancer, but metastases were observed in cervical lymph nodes, indicating a somewhat atypical CUP compared to the typical ovarian cancer-like CUP. We identified a germline Breast Cancer 1 (BRCA1) p.L63* variant through a family history inquiry and BRCA analysis, indicating hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. The patient achieved near-complete remission with platinum-based therapy followed by poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor. The variant has shown sensitivity in both clinical and pathogenic reports in the ClinVar database of the National Institutes of Health. No clinical studies reported on the efficacy of PARP inhibitors specific to this variant, but our case demonstrated the sensitivity of platinum-based therapy followed by PARP inhibitor. Reports of CUP in hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome are very rare, with only a single report in the literature.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) patients with glucocorticoid excess have been reported to be associated with decreased tumor-infiltrating immune cells, but the effects of in situ glucocorticoid production on tumor immunity have remained unknown. In addition, ACC was also known to harbor marked intra-tumoral heterogeneity of steroidogenesis or disorganized steroidogenesis. Therefore, in this study, we immune-profiled tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and pivotal steroidogenic enzymes of glucocorticoid biosynthesis (CYP17A and CYP11B1) to explore the potential effects of in situ glucocorticoid production and intra-tumoral heterogeneity/disorganized steroidogenesis on tumor immunity of ACC. We also studied the correlations of the status of tumor immunity with that of angiogenesis and tumor grade to further explore the tumor tissue microenvironment of ACC. TILs (CD3, CD4, CD8, and FOXP3), TAMs (CD68 and CD163), key steroidogenic enzymes of glucocorticoid (CYP17A and CYP11B1), angiogenesis (CD31 and vasohibin-1 (VASH-1)), tumor grade (Ki-67 and Weiss score) were immunohistochemically evaluated in 34 ACCs. Increased CYP17A immunoreactivity in the whole tumor area was significantly positively correlated with FOXP3-positive TILs (p = 0.021) and negatively with CD4/CD3 ratio (p = 0.001). Increased CYP11B1 immunoreactivity in the whole tumor area was significantly positively correlated with CD8/CD3 (p = 0.039) and CD163/CD68 ratios (p = 0.006) and negatively with CD4-positive TILs (p = 0.036) and CD4/CD3 ratio (p = 0.001). There were also significant positive correlations between CYP17A and CD8 (r = 0.334, p < 0.001) and FOXP3-positive TILs (r = 0.414, p < 0.001), CD8/CD3 ratio (r = 0.421, p < 0.001), and CD68-positive TAMs (r = 0.298, p < 0.001) in randomly selected areas. Significant positive correlations were also detected between CYP11B1 and CD8/CD3 ratio (r = 0.276, p = 0.001) and negative ones detected between CYP11B1 and CD3- (r = -0.259, p = 0.002) and CD4-positive TILs (r = -0.312, p < 0.001) in those areas above. Increased micro-vessel density (MVD) -VASH-1 was significantly positively correlated with CD68- (p = 0.015) and CD163-positive TAMs (p = 0.009) and CD163/CD68 ratio and the high VASH-1 with CD163-positive TAMs (p = 0.042). Ki-67 labeling index was significantly positively correlated with MAD-VASH-1 (p = 0.006) and VASH-1 (p = 0.006) status. Results of our present study indicated that in situ glucocorticoid production did influence the status of tumor immunity in ACC. In particular, increased levels of CYP17A and CYP11B1, both involved in glucocorticoid producing immunoreactivity played different effects on tumor immunity, i.e., reflecting the involvement of intra-tumoral heterogeneity and disorganized steroidogenesis of ACC, which also did indicate the importance of in situ approaches when analyzing tumor immunity of ACC.

Aim: Because the optimal treatment strategy for borderline resectable (cT3br) thoracic esophageal cancer patients remains unclear, it is of great interest whether preoperative neoadjuvant therapy for cT3br could achieve results comparable to those seen with resectable T3 cancer (cT3r). We speculated that preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT) would be particularly effective in cT3br thoracic esophageal cancer patients and compared to cT3br and cT3r. Methods: Of 186 cT3 thoracic esophageal cancer patients treated with intended NACRT, 162 received radical esophagectomy. More than 97% were squamous cell carcinomas. Patients were partitioned into two groups according to whether invasion of adjacent organs was suspected (cT3br and cT3r). Treatment outcomes and survival were analyzed. Results: Sixty-eight patients (36.6%) were classified as cT3br and 118 (63.4%) as cT3r. The cT3br group had significantly more tumors in the upper and middle mediastinum (p < 0.0001) and more cases with cM1 (lymph node) (p = 0.0104) than the cT3r group. In addition, the cT3br patients receiving esophagectomy exhibited a significantly lower pathological complete response rate than the cT3r patients (p = 0.0374). However, the R0 resection rate did not differ between the cT3br and cT3r patients (p = 0.0978), and the two groups treated with intended NACRT had similar 5-year overall (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) (p = 0.3831 and p = 0.9020). In addition, the incidence and patterns of recurrence did not differ between the cT3br and cT3r patients receiving esophagectomy (p = 0.8109 and p = 0.3128). Conclusions: Preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy appears to be a promising treatment for patients with borderline resectable thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can rarely induce smooth muscle tumors (SMTs). A 20-year-old female patient underwent kidney transplantation for renal failure. Since then, she has been treated with immunosuppressants, including a calcineurin inhibitor, tacrolimus, and prednisolone, owing to the immunological rejection. Three years later, she developed large liver tumors (diameter >5 cm) and multiple small lung tumors that were identified as EBV-SMTs based on the results of liver biopsy/histopathology. No intervention was performed except for the addition of a mammalian target of the rapamycin inhibitor, everolimus, which inhibits both immune reaction and SMT growth. Finally, after 8 years, the transplanted kidney became nonfunctional, and immunosuppressant administration became unnecessary as urinary dialysis was started. Under these circumstances, SMT growth was observed despite the absence of immunosuppressant administration. Three months after the cessation of the immunosuppressants, EBV-SMTs in the liver and lungs shrank slightly. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the genomic profile of this rare tumor. The clinical course of our patient indicates that EBV can induce SMTs, and immunological suppression of EBV may inhibit the activity of these tumors.

A 66-year-old male was diagnosed with cT4N0M1b small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the prostate. Four months after the administration of combined androgen blockade, multiple novel metastatic regions in the lung and liver and progression of bone metastasis were observed. The patient was referred to our hospital because of biochemical and radiographic progression after four cycles of docetaxel as a first-line therapy for castration-resistant prostate cancer. Transurethral resection of the prostate and hepatic biopsy revealed small-cell carcinoma with positive expression of neuroendocrine markers. The FoundationOne CDx next-generation sequencing test revealed several pathogenic variants, including BRCA2 (W1692fs*3), KEAP1 (R320W), and TP53 (C2385) mutation. After four cycles of chemotherapy with carboplatin plus etoposide (CE), the metastatic regions regressed markedly. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) level decreased by 96.9% and 91.6%, respectively. However, 2 months after the completion of four cycles of CE, elevation of tumor marker levels, and re-growth of the metastatic regions were observed. Although olaparib, a poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor (PARPi), achieved a 45.2% decrease in NSE, the patient rejected to continue therapy because of G2 adverse events. After receiving an additional two cycles of CE and one cycle of cabazitaxel, the patient died because of cancer progression 24 months after the initial treatment for prostate cancer. Here, we present a case of BRCA2-altered small-cell neuroendocrine prostate cancer treated with both platinum-containing chemotherapy and PARPi. Both therapies achieved an initial response; however, durable responses were not obtained. Additional discussion regarding the optimal treatment strategy for BRCA-altered small-cell/neuroendocrine prostate cancer is required.

BACKGROUND: We report a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma that progressed rapidly after androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer in a patient with a history of IgG4-related disease. Estrogen has been reported to be a possible cause of acute exacerbations of malignant lymphoma only in mouse models. Therefore, its clinical significance has not been clarified. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 75-year-old man with prostate cancer who had IgG4-related disease. Hormone therapy was initiated to treat prostate cancer, but he developed dyspnea and back pain. A diagnosis was made of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Immunohistochemistry was positive for estrogen receptor ß, which led us to suspect rapid progression of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma due to estrogen suppression by gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonists. Hormone therapy was discontinued, and the patient received R-CHOP therapy. Subsequently, the lymphoma masses shrunk, and the patient obtained remission. CONCLUSION: This case is the first report of clinical significance regarding the crucial role of estrogen and estrogen receptor ß in malignant lymphoma in a patient with IgG4-related disease. Our report aims to raise awareness of the need to carefully select treatment options for prostate cancer patients with IgG4-related disease or lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: The etiological significance of the RAS and PI3K pathways has been reported in systemic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) but not in primary intracranial ERMS (PIERMS). Herein, the authors present a unique case of PIERMS with a BRAF mutation. OBSERVATIONS: A 12-year-old girl with progressive headache and nausea was diagnosed with a tumor in the right parietal lobe. Semi-emergency surgery revealed an intra-axial lesion that was histopathologically identical to an ERMS. Next-generation sequencing indicated a BRAF mutation as a pathogenic variation, but the RAS and PI3K pathways showed no alteration. Although there is no established reference class for PIERMS, the DNA methylation prediction was closest to that of ERMS, indicating the possibility of PIERMS. The final diagnosis was PIERMS. The patient underwent local radiotherapy (50.4 Gy) and multiagent chemotherapy, with no recurrence for 12 months after surgery. LESSONS: This may be the first case demonstrating the molecular features of PIERMS, especially the intra-axial type. The results showed a mutation in BRAF but not in the RAS and PI3K pathways, which is different from the existing ERMS features. This molecular difference may cause differences in DNA methylation profiles. Accumulation of the molecular features of PIERMS is necessary before any conclusions can be drawn.

Most so-called "beneficial bacteria" in gut microbiota are Gram-positive, and TLR6 recognizes the peptidoglycan (PGN) present in their cell walls. We hypothesized that a high TLR6 expression status predicts a more favorable prognosis after esophagectomy. We used an ESCC tissue microarray (TMA) to examine TLR6 expression status in ESCC patients and to determine whether TLR6 expression status correlates with prognosis after curative esophagectomy. We also examined whether PGN influences the cell proliferation activity of ESCC lines. Clinical ESCC samples from 177 patients tested for the expression of TLR6 were categorized as 3+ (n = 17), 2+ (n = 48), 1+ (n = 68), or 0 (n = 44). High TLR6 expression (3+ and 2+) correlated with significantly more favorable 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) after esophagectomy than a lower TLR6 expression (1+ and 0). Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that TLR6 expression status is an independent prognostic factor that affects 5-year OS. PGN significantly inhibited the cell proliferation activity of ESCC lines. This is the first study to show that high TLR6 expression status predicts a more favorable prognosis in locally advanced thoracic ESCC patients after curative esophagectomy. PGN released from "beneficial bacteria" seems to have potential to inhibit the cell proliferation activity of ESCC.

Even when treated comprehensively by surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, soft-tissue sarcoma has an unfavorable outcome. Because soft-tissue sarcoma is rare, it is the subject of fewer clinicopathological studies, which are important for clarifying pathophysiology. Here, we examined tumor-associated macrophages in the intratumoral and marginal areas of sarcomas to increase our knowledge about the pathophysiology. Seventy-five sarcoma specimens (not limited to a single histological type), resected at our institution, were collected, and the number of CD68-, CD163-, and CD204-positive macrophages in the intratumoral and marginal areas was counted. We then performed statistical analysis to examine links between macrophage numbers, clinical factors, and outcomes. A high number of macrophages positive for all markers in both areas was associated with worse disease-free survival (DFS). Next, we divided cases according to the FNCLCC classification (Grade 1 and Grades 2/3). In the Grade 1 group, there was no significant association between macrophage number and DFS. However, in the Grade 2/3 group, high numbers of CD163- and CD204-positive macrophages in the marginal area were associated with poor DFS. By contrast, there was no significant difference between the groups with respect to high or low numbers of CD68-, CD163-, or CD204-positive macrophages in the intratumoral area. Multivariate analysis identified the number of CD163- and CD204-positive macrophages in the marginal area as an independent prognostic factor. Macrophage numbers in the marginal area of soft-tissue sarcoma may better reflect clinical behavior.

Knowledge of the histologic type and primary origin of pulmonary tumors is essential when preparing a surgical strategy. Intraoperative diagnosis of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained frozen sections is the gold standard, but reliable pathology requires time-consuming immunohistochemistry (IHC) to distinguish among histological types/organ origins and to analyze molecular status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical reliability of a new rapid-IHC technique for intraoperative diagnosis of pulmonary tumors. In total, 169 patients with undiagnosed pulmonary tumors were enrolled in a multicenter prospective observational study. At three institutes, pulmonary tumor samples were collected through core needle biopsy and/or surgery to determine surgical strategies. Using a new device for rapid IHC, we applied a high-voltage, low-frequency alternating current (AC) field, which mixes the available antibody as the voltage is switched on/off. Rapid IHC can provide tumor histologic type/origin diagnoses within 20 min, as opposed to the 3-6 h required for conventional IHC. No false diagnoses of malignancy were rendered in any of the cases when using simple H&E staining. With H&E staining alone, the overall definitive diagnosis rate, the rate of defined tumor origin, and the rate of determined histological type were 76.92%, 85.80%, and 90.53%, respectively. When rapid IHC was added, those rates were significantly improved to 88.76%, 94.67%, and 91.72%, respectively. By providing prompt and accurate intraoperative histological/molecular analysis, rapid IHC driven by AC mixing could serve as an effective clinical tool guiding the surgical strategy for undiagnosed pulmonary tumors.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Minerals and trace elements (TEs) play vital roles in normal biological functions and in all cancers. Breast carcinoma is the most commonly occurring cancer in women. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in TE levels before and after breast cancer surgery and the clinical utility and reliability of TE levels assayed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and 34 with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) treated with planned surgery were enrolled between August 2017 and February 2019. Blood samples were collected before and the day after resection of the primary tumor. All enrolled patients received mastectomy or quadrantectomy and axillary lymph node dissection/biopsy. Serum TE concentrations were determined using ICP-MS. RESULTS: Changes in boron, titanium, vanadium, chromium, copper, zinc, and selenium levels from before to after surgery differed between IDC and DCIS patients. Boron and copper levels before surgery and changes in titanium, vanadium, and chromium before and after surgery are potential predictors distinguishing DCIS from IDC. Subset analysis showed that chromium is a potential biomarker for luminal subtype, while titanium and chromium are potential biomarkers for pathological staging. CONCLUSION: Changes in serum TEs before and after surgery may help with diagnosis and staging of breast cancer and in establishing TE supplementation protocols.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies report that cerebellar glioblastoma (GBM) is categorized into the RTK1 methylation class. GBM pediatric RTK (pedRTK) subtypes are distinct from those of adult GBM. We present a unique adult case of cerebellar GBM classified into the pedRTK subtype. OBSERVATIONS: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a homogeneous enhancing lesion in the right cerebellum in a 56-year-old woman presenting with ataxia and dizziness. Arterial spin labeling and angiographic findings and the intraoperative orange-colored tumor appearance were reminiscent of hemangioblastoma. She showed an atypical presentation in terms of high glucose metabolism. The histological diagnosis was high-grade glioma with differentiation similar to central nervous system neuroblastoma. The methylation class was GBM pedRTK1. Consistent with this classification, immunoexpression was positive for SOX10 and negative for ANKRD55. She underwent craniospinal radiotherapy (23.4 Gy) with a boost to the tumor bed (total 55.8 Gy). Twelve courses of temozolomide therapy were administered. There was no recurrence 18 months after surgery. LESSONS: Radiological and intraoperative findings, such as hemangioblastoma and high glucose metabolism, were notable characteristics in the present case. Both glial and neuronal differentiation and SOX10 immunoexpression were presenting pathological features. Similar cerebellar GBMs might form a previously unestablished subtype. Establishing effective molecular diagnoses is important.

OBJECTIVES: Locoregional recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) occurs even among patients with stage I disease, as a result of tumor proliferative activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical reliability of a new rapid immunohistochemistry (IHC) technique for assessing malignant potential through detection of tumoral Ki-67 expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The rapid IHC method uses non-contact alternating current (AC) mixing to achieve more rapid/stable staining within 20 min during surgery. First, to investigate the association between clinical outcomes and tumoral Ki-67 labeling with rapid IHC, 21 pairs of surgical patients treated between 2012 and 2020 for pStage IA1-3 NSCLC with/without recurrence were retrospectively reviewed. Second, 40 frozen section (FS) samples in patients with NSCLC for whom radical surgery was planned between April 2021 and February 2022 were deemed eligible for comparison of the clinical performance of conventional IHC and intraoperative rapid Ki-67 IHC with FS. RESULTS: Detection of tumoral Ki-67 expression using rapid IHC with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks was significantly associated with clinical outcomes in R0 pStage IA NSCLC surgical patients, including overall and recurrence-free survival (P = 0.0043 and P < 0.0001, respectively). Levels of Ki-67 expression among resectable NSCLC patients detected using rapid IHC with FS significantly correlated with those detected using conventional FFPE-IHC (p < 0.001). An intraoperative cut-off of > 7.5 % tumor cell Ki-67 positivity accurately predicted pathological stage more advanced than IA3 [P = 0.0185, Odds ratio = 20.477, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.660-252.55]. CONCLUSION: Rapid Ki-67 IHC with AC mixing could potentially serve as a clinical tool for intraoperative determination of tumor malignancy status. The present study suggests that segmentectomy for early small NSCLCs is oncologically safe and a reasonable alternative to lobectomy, but only when there is adequate intraoperative selection for primary tumors with low-grade malignancy, which could be verified using intraoperative rapid Ki-67 IHC with FS.

A 65-year-old man was found to have a 1.7 cm right renal mass by follow-up abdominal computed tomography for left total nephrectomy after a traffic accident. The renal mass progressed slowly to 2.2 cm in three years and enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed marked T2 weighting hyperintensity of the lesion. Although a radiologist (TK) suggested the diagnosis renal anastomosing hemangioma preoperatively, we could not deny the possibility of renal cell carcinoma completely. Therefore, the patient underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. The tumor was successfully removed without any renal arterial clamping or parenchymal excision. Histopathologically, the lesion was composed of capillary-size blood vessels lined by a single layer of endothelial cells, and was diagnosed as a renal anastomosing hemangioma. There were no signs of postoperative recurrence during the 3 month follow-up.
