BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis discovered in ancient centuries still remains a major public health problem in India. Lack of awareness about the cause, risk factors, treatment and prevention of TB among rural people is a major challenge to be addressed to reduce disease transmission. AIMS: To assess the knowledge of TB among rural people. To assess the awareness about RNTCP services. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Cross-sectional study was conducted in six randomly selected villages attached to a medical college. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Houses were selected by systematic random sampling method and younger person was identified as study subject. Data were collected from a sample of 300 by predesigned pretested semi-structured questionnaire. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Data were presented in proportions with confidence interval and Chi-square test was applied to find the association between variables by using SPSS ver. 23. RESULTS: The study showed that 79.6% knew that the cause of TB is bacteria. Majority of the participants 93.6% (95% CI: 90.3, 96.1) knew that TB primarily affects lungs. Subjects were aware of free diagnostic services (85.3%), free treatment services (89%) available in the govt setup. CONCLUSIONS: Although the awareness of symptoms, causative agent, mode of spread was reasonably good, knowledge on availability of DOTS centres, services offered through RNTCP is still poor among rural population.

Terminalia catappa L. belonging to Combretaceae family is a folk medicine, known for its multiple pharmacological properties, but the neuro-modulatory effect of TC against chronic mild stress was seldom explored. The present study was designed to elucidate potential antidepressant-like effect of Terminalia cattapa (leaf) hydro-alcoholic extract (TC) by using CMS model for a period of 7 weeks. Identification of hydrolysable tannins was done by using LC-MS. After the CMS exposure, mice groups were administered with imipramine (IMP, 10mg/kg, i.p.) and TC (25, 50 and 100mg/kg of TC, p.o.). Behavioural paradigms used for the study included forced swimming test (FST), tail suspension test (TST) and sucrose preference test (SPT). After behavioural tests, monoamine neurotransmitter, cortisol, AchE, oxidative stress levels and mRNA expression studies relevant to depression were assessed. TC supplementation significantly reversed CMS induced immobility time in FST and other behavioural paradigms. Moreover, TC administration significantly restored CMS induced changes in concentrations of hippocampal neurotransmitters (5-HT, DA and NE) as well as levels of acetyl cholinesterase, cortisol, monoamine oxidases (MAO-A, MAO-B), BDNF, CREB, and p-CREB. It suggests that TC supplementation could supress stress induced depression by regulating monoamine neurotransmitters, CREB, BDNF, cortisol, AchE level as well as by amelioration of oxidative stress. Hence TC can be used as a complementary medicine against depression-like disorder.

Fumonisins are one of the most agriculturally significant environmental toxins produced by Fusarium and Aspergillus species that grow on agricultural commodities in the field or during storage. Cereals contaminated with fumonisins causes serious loss to agricultural produce leads to health problems in humans and other farm animals. In the present study, polyclonal hyperimmune sera was raised against FB1 in rabbits immunized with FB1-keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH). Purified antibodies were used to establish a sensitive gold nanoparticle based immunochromatographic strip (ICG) for detecting FB1 levels in cereal grains. Effective on-site detection of FB1 was achieved by developing a rapid and sensitive pAb based ICG strip. This strip had a detection limit of 5 ng mL(-1) for FB1 in cereal samples and it could be completed within 3 min. Close examination of 150 cereal samples by ICG strip method revealed that 77 were fumonisin-positive. Results obtained by the developed method was further validated with well standardized HPLC method and results of strip method was correlated well with those obtained by HPLC method. In conclusion, the developed method was a better alternative for onsite detection of FB1 in cereal samples intended for human consumption to reduce risk of humans and other farm animals. The high level of FB1 concentrations recorded in present study warrants the need to develop an awareness creation programme to the farmers of India for safe handling of cereal grains at the time of harvesting and storage of grains.
