BACKGROUND: There is currently no validated tool available for assessing the potential significance of pharmacist interventions in Vietnam. AIM: This study aimed to translate the CLEO tool from French into Vietnamese, validate the Vietnamese version, and demonstrate its feasibility in daily practice. METHOD: The CLEO tool was translated into Vietnamese (CLEOVN) using a 5-step process by bilingual experts. A total of 100 scenarios were compiled from clinical cases from nine hospitals evaluated by seven clinical pharmacists to determine inter-rater reliability and 30 out of 100 scenarios were re-evaluated one month later to determine test-retest reliability. Reliability was quantified using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). A 20-item questionnaire on a 7-point Likert scale assessed the tool's appropriateness, acceptability, precision, and feasibility. RESULTS: Inter-rater reliability was good for clinical dimension (ICCA,1 = 0.71), excellent for economic dimension (ICCA,1 = 0.86), and fair for organizational/operational dimension (ICCA,1 = 0.56). Test-retest reliability scores were excellent for clinical (I̅C̅C̅A,1 = 0.79), excellent for economic (I̅C̅C̅A,1 = 0.84), and fair for organizational/operational (I̅C̅C̅A,1 = 0.56). The tool was rated as appropriate (mean = 5.86; SD = 1.03), acceptable (mean = 5.19; SD = 1.12), precise (mean = 5.71; SD = 1.17), and feasible (mean = 5.05; SD = 1.24). The maximum time required to evaluate an intervention was three minutes. CONCLUSION: The CLEOVN tool was successfully translated and validated for reliability, appropriateness, acceptability, precision, and feasibility. It will be suitable to evaluate the value of clinical pharmacy interventions.

Variant calling is fundamental in bacterial genomics, underpinning the identification of disease transmission clusters, the construction of phylogenetic trees, and antimicrobial resistance detection. This study presents a comprehensive benchmarking of variant calling accuracy in bacterial genomes using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing data. We evaluated three ONT basecalling models and both simplex (single-strand) and duplex (dual-strand) read types across 14 diverse bacterial species. Our findings reveal that deep learning-based variant callers, particularly Clair3 and DeepVariant, significantly outperform traditional methods and even exceed the accuracy of Illumina sequencing, especially when applied to ONT's super-high accuracy model. ONT's superior performance is attributed to its ability to overcome Illumina's errors, which often arise from difficulties in aligning reads in repetitive and variant-dense genomic regions. Moreover, the use of high-performing variant callers with ONT's super-high accuracy data mitigates ONT's traditional errors in homopolymers. We also investigated the impact of read depth on variant calling, demonstrating that 10× depth of ONT super-accuracy data can achieve precision and recall comparable to, or better than, full-depth Illumina sequencing. These results underscore the potential of ONT sequencing, combined with advanced variant calling algorithms, to replace traditional short-read sequencing methods in bacterial genomics, particularly in resource-limited settings.


Imagine being part of a public health institution when, suddenly, cases of Salmonella surge across your country. You are facing an outbreak of this foodborne disease, and the clock is ticking. People are consuming a contaminated product that is making them sick; how do you identify related cases, track the source of the infection, and shut down its production? In situations like these, scientists need to tell apart even closely related strains of the same bacterial species. This process, known as variant calling, relies on first analysing (or 'sequencing') the genetic information obtained from the bacteria of interest, then comparing it to a reference genome. Currently, two main approaches are available for genome sequencing. Traditional 'short-read' technologies tend to be more accurate but less reliable when covering certain types of genomic regions. New 'long-read' approaches can bypass these limitations though they have historically been less accurate. Comparison with a reference genome can be performed using a tool known as a variant caller. Many of the most effective ones are now based on artificial intelligence approaches such as deep learning. However, these have primarily been applied to human genomic data so far; it therefore remains unclear whether they are equally useful for bacterial genomes. In response, Hall et al. set out to investigate the accuracy of four deep learning-based and three traditional variant callers on datasets from 14 bacterial species obtained via long-read approaches. Their respective performance was also benchmarked against a more conventional approach representing a standard of accuracy (that is, a popular, non-deep learning variant caller used on short-read datasets). These analyses were performed on a 'truthset' established by Hall et al., a collection of validated data that allowed them to assess the performance of the various tools tested. The results show that, in this context, the deep learning variant callers more accurately detected genetic variations compared to the traditional approach. These tools, which could be run on standard laptops, were effective even with low amounts of sequencing data ­ making them useful even in settings where resources are limited. Variant calling is an essential step in tracking the emergence and spread of disease, identifying new strains of bacteria, and examining their evolution. The findings by Hall et al. should therefore benefit various sectors, particularly clinical and public health laboratories.

A robust T-cell expansion process involves co-culturing T-cells with non-proliferating feeder cells combined with anti-CD3 antibody and IL-2. Although ionizing irradiation effectively inhibits feeder cell proliferation, the high operating costs limit cell therapy research to well-funded institutions. UVC, known for causing DNA damage-induced cell death and commonly used for environmental sterilization, presents a cost-effective alternative to ionizing irradiation for generating non-proliferating feeder cells. UVC irradiation of K562 artificial antigen presenting cells (aAPCs) resulted in significant DNA damage, evidenced by increased γ-H2AX phosphorylation within 15 minutes and elevated 8-OHdG levels at 24 hours. This indicates the occurrence of DNA double-strand breaks and oxidative damage. Following UVC irradiation, glucose uptake and ATP production were significantly reduced, whereas aCD3 retention at the surface of the cell increased twofold. Selective inhibition of glucose uptake and ATP production similarly enhanced aCD3 retention by approximately 10-fold and 6-fold, respectively. This suggests that UVC-induced energy deprivation dampens aCD3 internalization, potentially enhancing T-cell activation through prolonged aCD3 and T-cell receptor interaction. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) expanded with UVC-irradiated PBMCs demonstrated comparable viability, expansion, immunophenotype, and effector function to those expanded with ionizing irradiation. UVC irradiation was equally effective in suppressing feeder cell proliferation and facilitating the expansion of functionally potent T-cells compared to traditional ionizing irradiation. Implementing UVC irradiation in T-cell expansion can significantly reduce costs, enhancing the accessibility and feasibility of cell therapy research across various institutions.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate Vietnamese people's knowledge, attitudes, and experience in purchasing medicines and functional foods online. METHODS: Via an online survey, the data of 1,070 participants were collected, including their general characteristics, Internet use, previous experience, knowledge, and attitudes towards purchasing medicines/functional foods online. Factors associated with their knowledge and attitudes were identified via multivariate linear regression models. RESULTS: During 2022-2023, about 97.2% of participants used the Internet to seek health information (self-diagnosis: 65.0%, self-medication: 72.6%). Roughly 52.8% bought medicines and/or functional foods online. Among 565 buyers, 41.8% felt satisfied. Only 19.9% understood that selling medicines online was illegal in Vietnam. The main benefits of purchasing medicines/functional foods online that many people agreed on included convenience (87.1%), freedom from location (84.8%), and being able to order/buy products after opening hours (84.7%). Many people felt worried about the ability to buy counterfeit or substandard products (87.7%), inaccurate product information (85.0%), the lack of supervision of the authorities (83.7%), and increasing risks of drug abuse, self-medication, and treatment non-adherence (82.5%). Roughly 84.3% found distinguishing between legal and illegal online pharmacies difficult. Participants' average knowledge and attitude scores were 6.514 ± 2.461 (range: 0-16) and 89.330 ± 13.720 (range: 23-115), respectively. The main factors associated with people's knowledge and attitudes towards purchasing these products online included their frequency of Internet use, seeking health information online for self-medication, feeling satisfied with previous experience, and having at least one chronic disease. CONCLUSIONS: Many Vietnamese people's knowledge about purchasing medicines/functional foods online was limited. With the increasing need for online shopping, enhancing their knowledge is paramount. In the forthcoming years, when the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities publish legal documents and enact laws involving online pharmacies and trading medicines on the Internet, ways to recognize licensed online pharmacies must be widely propagated and disseminated in the community.

BACKGROUND: In December 2018 the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act legalized the recreational use of cannabis in Michigan. There are now high potency forms of cannabis readily available in the state, which could result in increased emergency department (ED) visit rates due to intoxication in adults and children. Although cannabis related visits account for a small percentage of all adult and pediatric ED visits, they impose a significant burden on the health care system's resources. This study aimed to assess the impact of the legalization of recreational marijuana on the rate of ED visits for acute cannabis intoxication. METHODS AND DESIGN: We utilized the legalization of marijuana in the state of Michigan to conduct a natural experiment utilizing a retrospective observational cohort design of ED visits for acute intoxication before and after legalization. The study was conducted at a health system composed of eight hospitals in southeast Michigan, including both academic and community hospitals serving a diverse patient population. We estimated monthly cannabis-related ED visits based on cannabis-related ICD-10 discharge codes and total ED visits using electronic health record data from 2016 to 2022. A negative-binomial (NB) regression model was used to estimate the immediate and cumulative changes in cannabis-related ED visit rate after legalization. RESULTS: There were a total of 2177 ED visits from 2066 patients for cannabis intoxication in our study cohort. Of the 2177 visits, 671 were before and 1506 were after legalization. In the univariate analysis, recreational cannabis legalization was associated with an increase in the average cannabis-related ED visit rate (Rate Ratio [RR]:1.70, 95% CI: (1.49, 1.94), p-value <0.001). In the multivariate analysis adjusting for age, results remain significant (RR 1.47, 95% CI (1.29, 1.70), p-value <0.001). The increased visit rate occurred in the first month after legalization; however, the slope of the increasing rate of ED visits were similar before and after cannabis legalization (RR, 1.28, 95% CI (1.07, 1.54), p-value <0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The legalization of recreational cannabis in Michigan was associated with an immediate increase in ED visit rates for acute cannabis intoxications across all ages, especially among middle-aged adults, in the context of an stably increasing ED visit rate.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are the leading cause of disease burden among youth. Effective prevention of mental disorders during adolescence is a critical public health strategy to reduce both individual and societal harms. Schools are an important setting for prevention; however, existing universal school-based mental health interventions have shown null, and occasionally iatrogenic, effects in preventing symptoms of common disorders, such as depression and anxiety. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to report the adaptation process of an established, universal, school-based prevention program for depression and anxiety, OurFutures Mental Health. Using a 4-stage process; triangulating quantitative, qualitative, and evidence syntheses; and centering the voices of young people, the revised program is trauma-informed; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, queer, questioning, and otherwise gender and sexuality diverse (LGBTQA+) affirmative; relevant to contemporary youth; and designed to tailor intervention dosage to those who need it most (proportionate universalism). METHODS: Program adaptation occurred from April 2022 to July 2023 and involved 4 stages. Stage 1 comprised mixed methods analysis of student evaluation data (n=762; mean age 13.5, SD 0.62 y), collected immediately after delivering the OurFutures Mental Health program in a previous trial. Stage 2 consisted of 3 focus groups with high school students (n=39); regular meetings with a purpose-built, 8-member LGBTQA+ youth advisory committee; and 2 individual semistructured, in-depth interviews with LGBTQA+ young people via Zoom (Zoom Video Communications) or WhatsApp (Meta) text message. Stage 3 involved a clinical psychologist providing an in-depth review of all program materials with the view of enhancing readability, improving utility, and normalizing emotions while retaining key cognitive behavioral therapy elements. Finally, stage 4 involved fortnightly consultations among researchers and clinicians on the intervention adaptation, drawing on the latest evidence from existing literature in school-based prevention interventions, trauma-informed practice, and adolescent mental health. RESULTS: Drawing on feedback from youth, clinical psychologists, and expert youth mental health researchers, sourced from stages 1 to 4, a series of adaptations were made to the storylines, characters, and delivery of therapeutic content contained in the weekly manualized program content, classroom activities, and weekly student and teacher lesson summaries. CONCLUSIONS: The updated OurFutures Mental Health program is a trauma-informed, LBGTQA+ affirmative program aligned with the principles of proportionate universalism. The program adaptation responds to recent mixed findings on universal school-based mental health prevention programs, which include null, small beneficial, and small iatrogenic effects. The efficacy of the refined OurFutures Mental Health program is currently being tested through a cluster randomized controlled trial with up to 1400 students in 14 schools across Australia. It is hoped that the refined program will advance the current stalemate in universal school-based prevention of common mental disorders and ultimately improve the mental health and well-being of young people in schools.

Pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive blood cancer with a poor prognosis and high relapse rate. Current challenges in the identification of immunotherapy targets arise from patient-specific blast immunophenotypes and their change during disease progression. To overcome this, we present a new computational research tool to rapidly identify malignant cells. We generated single-cell flow cytometry profiles of 21 pediatric AML patients with matched samples at diagnosis, remission, and relapse. We coupled a classifier to an autoencoder for anomaly detection and classified malignant blasts with 90% accuracy. Moreover, our method assigns a developmental stage to blasts at the single-cell level, improving current classification approaches based on differentiation of the dominant phenotype. We observed major immunophenotype and developmental stage alterations between diagnosis and relapse. Patients with KMT2A rearrangement had more profound changes in their blast immunophenotypes at relapse compared to patients with other molecular features. Our method provides new insights into the immunophenotypic composition of AML blasts in an unbiased fashion and can help to define immunotherapy targets that might improve personalized AML treatment.

Individuals with Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) such as polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia (ET) demonstrate an increased thrombotic risk associated with JAK2 mutations. Physicians must take heed when treating these patients, to mitigate this pro-thrombotic state as much as possible. Failure to do so, or exacerbating the state, can lead to dire consequences. We present the case of a 27-year-old female with a history of ulcerative colitis (UC) and ET, currently taking estrogen-containing oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). She presented to the emergency department with rapid weight gain, jaundice, nausea, and diarrhea and was found to have obstructive jaundice and thrombotic burden that extended into the portal, mesenteric, splenic, and hepatic veins. On the second attempt, a successful transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt procedure was performed, resulting in improved venous flow. This case underscores the importance of cautious medication use, especially OCPs, in patients with hypercoagulable states due to JAK2 mutations, for example, the V617F mutation in JAK2. It emphasizes the need for vigilant monitoring, individualized management, and a multidisciplinary approach to mitigate thrombotic complications. Increased awareness and continued research are crucial for optimizing treatment strategies for patients with MPNs and associated genetic mutations.

Understanding how sensory processing demands affect the ability to ignore task-irrelevant, loud auditory stimuli (LAS) during a task is key to performance in dynamic environments. For example, tennis players must ignore crowd noise to perform optimally. We investigated how practice affects this ability by examining the effects of delivering LASs during preparatory phase of an anticipatory timing (AT) task on the voluntary and reflexive responses in two conditions: lower and higher visual processing loads. Twenty-four participants (mean age = 23.1, 11 females) completed the experiment. The AT task involved synchronizing a finger abduction response with the last visual stimulus item in a sequence of four Gabor grating patches briefly flashed on screen. The lower demand condition involved only this task, and the higher demand condition required processing the orientations of the patches to report changes in the final stimulus item. Our results showed that higher visual processing demands affected the release of voluntary actions, particularly in the first block of trials. When the perceptual load was lower, responses were released earlier by the LAS compared to the high-load condition. Practice reduced these effects largely, but high perceptual load still led to earlier action release in the second block. In contrast, practice led to more apparent facilitation of eyeblink latency in the second block. These findings indicate that a simple perceptual load manipulation can impact the execution of voluntary motor actions, particularly for inexperienced participants. They also suggest distinct movement preparation influences on voluntary and involuntary actions triggered by acoustic stimuli.

OBJECTIVE: To examines the access to reproductive health information by women with physical disabilities in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. METHODS: An ethnography was used in this research. Data collection was conducted by using observations, photovoice, and in-depth interview with 30 participants, which including 20 women with physical disabilities, 5 healthcare providers, and 5 key informants. RESULTS: Research findings revealed that women with physical disabilities had variable reproductive health knowledge with some women being more informed than others. They obtained reproductive health knowledge via four pathways: family, school, community, and self-learning via peers and the Internet. They learned different types of information from these sources, but their reproductive health resources remained limited, leading to very little reproductive health knowledge for women. CONCLUSION: Most women in this research are not educated by family members about reproductive health issues due to the Vietnamese cultural and social norms about sexual and reproductive health and ideas about disability. Some women have the opportunity to complete grade 9 and higher education levels, hence they are able to access authorized information via biology classes and other sexual and reproductive health training courses. Some recommendations are given including [1] Comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education should be taught in schools; [2] The Ministry of Education and Training works with NGOs to provide more authoritative sexual and reproductive health documents or workplace training for all people with disabilities; [3] Social policy makers in Vietnam should review their policies regarding improving the quality of life of people with disabilities.

Post hepatectomy Liver Failure (PHLF) is a fatal complication, especially after major liver resection. Insufficient remnant liver volume is a common cause of postoperative liver failure. Many strategies have been applied to induce the remnant liver hypertrophy: Portal vein embolization (PVE), PVE combined with hepatic vein embolization (LVD), two staged liver resection, Associated liver partition with portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS). We present a case of a 39-year-old male patient who underwent LVD for preoperative liver hypertrophy. After LVD, the patient underwent additional artery embolization, and the patient's remaining liver volume increased by 63.2% in 7 weeks. The patient underwent a right hepatectomy and was discharged after 10 days, with no complications of postoperative liver failure. Simultaneous portal and hepatic vein embolization is a technique that has been applied recently because it can significantly promote the speed and extent of liver hypertrophy before major liver resection compared to portal vein embolization procedure alone. In this case, additional hepatic artery embolization may be an important factor lead to hypertrophy of the remnant liver, thereby shortening the waiting time for surgery and reducing the risk of tumor progression. Liver venous deprivation is safe and feasible to perform. Additional hepatic artery embolization may accelerate the hypertrophy of the remnant liver.

Little is known about how insecure attachment affects aggressive behavior and well-being among Vietnamese youth. Using structural equation modeling, we investigate the mediating role of subjective social status (SSS) on the paths from insecure attachment to overt aggressive behavior (OAB) and psychological well-being (PW) in a sample of 1753 Vietnamese adolescents (Mage = 16.136, SD = 0.784) and test whether the results will be replicated in another sample of 601 Vietnamese young adults (Mage = 19.93, SD = 1.35). Participants complete a survey comprising demographic information, attachment styles, SSS, OAB, and PW questionnaires. Our main findings include: (a) anxious attachment positively related to OAB in both samples, (b) anxious attachment was only negatively associated with adolescents' PW, (c) avoidant attachment was positively correlated to OAB in adolescents but negatively correlated in young adults, and (d) avoidant attachment was negatively related to PW in both samples. In addition, (e) in adolescents, the mediation role of SSS was significant in all paths, but (f) SSS only mediated the link from avoidant attachment to PW of young adults. The present study suggests that aggressive behavior might not be associated with social status or attachment in the same way in adolescents compared to young adult Vietnamese samples.

Background/purpose: Additive manufacturing (AM) technology, such as selective laser melting (SLM), has been used to fabricate medical devices of Ti-6wt.% Al-4wt.%V (Ti6Al4V) alloys in dentistry. Strontium (Sr) has been shown to have the potential to treat osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical and biological properties of strontium-containing coatings on selective laser melted Ti6Al4V (SLM-Ti6Al4V) substrate. Materials and methods: The disk of Ti6Al4V was prepared by SLM method. The strontium-containing coatings were prepared by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) in aqueous electrolytes. The surface topography, chemical composition, and phase of strontium-containing MAO (SrMAO) coatings were performed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), and thin film X-ray diffraction (TF-XRD), respectively. The apatite-forming ability of the MAO coatings was conducted in simulating body fluid (SBF), and the cell proliferation was determined by methylthiazoletetrazolium (MTT) assay. Results: The microstructure of SLM-Ti6Al4V displays acicular α-phase organization. The TF-XRD results indicated that the phase of SrMAO coating was anatase, rutile, and titanium. The calcium, phosphorus, and strontium were detected in the coatings by EDS. Using the SEM, the surface morphology of SrMAO coatings exhibited a uniform 3D porous structure. The SrMAO coatings could induce a bone-like apatite layer after immersion in SBF, and presented significantly higher cell proliferation than untreated specimens in in-vitro experiments. Conclusion: All findings in this study indicate that SrMAO coatings formed on SLM-Ti6Al4V surfaces exhibit a benefit on biological responses and thereby are suitable for biomedical applications.

Introduction: Laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy (LSPDP) with conservation of the splenic artery and vein (Kimura' technique) is considered a technically challenging procedure that requires a high level of expertise in laparoscopic and pancreatic surgery. Methods: A prospective descriptive study on 18 patients with laparoscopic "antegrade" spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy with Kimura' technique from 2018 to 2023. The perioperative indications, clinical data, intraoperative index, pathological postoperative specimens, postoperative complications, and follow-up results were retrospectively evaluated. Results: The mean age was 39.4±13.3. Only 2 male patients accounted for 11.1%. The average operating time is 171±23 min. The average blood loss is 65.7±43 ml. The average tumor size is 4.1 cm. The average hospitalization is 9.4 days. The rate of pancreatic fistula is 66.7%. There is no case of transferring open surgery or blood transfusion during surgery. The results of pathological after surgery there were eight cases of solid pseudopapillary tumors, four cases of mucinous cystadenoma, six cases of neuroendocrine tumors. Conclusion: Kimura's technique for laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy is safe and feasible, which can be applied to benign tumors in the body and tail of the pancreas. However, this is a difficult technique in laparoscopic surgery that requires surgeons to have a lot of experience and equipment need to be adequate.

Continuous assessment of the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the host at the cell-type level is crucial for understanding key mechanisms involved in host defense responses to viral infection. We investigated host response to ancestral-strain and Alpha-variant SARS-CoV-2 infections within air-liquid-interface human nasal epithelial cells from younger adults (26-32 Y) and older children (12-14 Y) using single-cell RNA-sequencing. Ciliated and secretory-ciliated cells formed the majority of highly infected cell-types, with the latter derived from ciliated lineages. Strong innate immune responses were observed across lowly infected and uninfected bystander cells and heightened in Alpha-infection. Alpha highly infected cells showed increased expression of protein-refolding genes compared with ancestral-strain-infected cells in children. Furthermore, oxidative phosphorylation-related genes were down-regulated in bystander cells versus infected and mock-control cells, underscoring the importance of these biological functions for viral replication. Overall, this study highlights the complexity of cell-type-, age- and viral strain-dependent host epithelial responses to SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: The PHARMacist Discharge Care (PHARM-DC) intervention is a pharmacist-led Transitions of Care (TOC) program intended to reduce 30-day hospital readmissions and emergency department visits which has been implemented at two hospitals in the United States. The objectives of this study were to: 1) explore perspectives surrounding the PHARM-DC program from healthcare providers, leaders, and administrators at both institutions, and 2) identify factors which may contribute to intervention success and sustainability. METHODS: Focus groups and interviews were conducted with pharmacists, physicians, nurses, hospital leaders, and pharmacy administrators at two institutions in the Northeastern and Western United States. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed, with transcriptions imported into NVivo for qualitative analysis. Thematic analysis was performed using an iterative process, with two study authors independently coding transcripts to identify themes. RESULTS: Overall, 37 individuals participated in ten focus groups and seven interviews. The themes identified included: 1) Organizational, Pharmacist, and Patient Factors Contributing to Transitions of Care, 2) Medication Challenges in Transitions of Care at Admission and Discharge, 3) Transitions of Care Communication and Discharge Follow-up, and 4) Opportunities for Improvement and Sustainability. The four themes were mapped to the constructs of the CFIR and RE-AIM frameworks. Some factors facilitating intervention success and sustainability were accurate medication histories collected on admission, addressing medication barriers before discharge, coordinating discharge using electronic health record discharge features, and having a structured process for intervention training and delivery. Barriers to intervention implementation and sustainability included gaps in communication with other care team members, and variable pharmacist skills for delivering the intervention. This study identified that using educational resources to standardize the TOC process addressed the issue of variations in pharmacists' skills for delivering TOC interventions. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses, physicians, pharmacists, pharmacist leaders, and hospital administrators were in agreement regarding the usefulness of the PHARM-DC intervention, while acknowledging challenges in its implementation and opportunities for improvement. Future research should focus on developing training materials to standardize and scale the intervention, eliminating barriers to medication access pre-discharge, coordinating discharge across care team members, and communicating medication changes to primary care providers post-discharge.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, patient's management approaches, and outcomes of the COVID-19 patients in Phu Tho Province, Vietnam. Methods: A retrospective, multicenter study of 2166 COVID-19 patients in 13 hospitals in Phutho Province, Vietnam. The subjects were divided into 3 groups based on vaccination status: unvaccinated group, 1st dose of vaccine group, 2nd dose of vaccine group. The clinical characteristics, management approaches, and outcomes were collected and compared between the 3 groups. Results: The hospitalization rate of the 3 groups decreased from the unvaccinated group, the 1st dose of vaccinated group, to the 2nd dose of vaccinated group, 42.61%; 30,24% and 27,15% respectively. The 19-40 years old group had the highest hospitalization rate (38,1%) together with the group that had not accepted the full COVID 19 vaccination dose (57,64%). The 2nd dose of vaccinated group had the lowest percentages of high temperature, cough, dyspnea, chest pain and sore throat. The unvaccinated group had the highest heart rate, respiratory rate and SpO2 compared to the two other groups. The percentage needing Immunomodulation and Anticoagulant Therapy was highest (6.8% and 1.4 % respectively) in the unvaccinated group. The percentage receiving Antiviral Therapy was highest (42,5%) in those who had received the 2nd dose of vaccine. Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccination improved the symptoms of the patients and should be accepted in all ages.

The emergence of resistance against the last-resort antibiotic vancomycin in staphylococcal infections is a serious concern for human health. Although various drug-resistant pathogens of diverse genetic backgrounds show higher virulence potential, the underlying mechanism behind this is not yet clear due to variability in their genetic dispositions. In this study, we investigated the correlation between resistance and virulence in adaptively evolved isogenic strains. The vancomycin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus USA300 was exposed to various concentrations of vancomycin repeatedly as a mimic of the clinical regimen to obtain mutation(s)-accrued-clonally-selected (MACS) strains. The phenotypic analyses followed by expression of the representative genes responsible for virulence and resistance of MACS strains were investigated. MACS strains obtained under 2 and 8 µg/ml vancomycin, named Van2 and Van8, respectively; showed enhanced vancomycin minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) to 4 and 16 µg/ml, respectively. The cell adhesion and invasion of MACS strains increased in proportion to their MICs. The correlation between resistance and virulence potential was partially explained by the differential expression of genes known to be involved in both virulence and resistance in MACS strains compared to parent S. aureus USA300. Repeated treatment of vancomycin against vancomycin-susceptible S. aureus (VSSA) leads to the emergence of vancomycin-resistant strains with variable levels of enhanced virulence potentials.

When grapes are exposed to wildfire smoke, certain smoke-related volatile phenols (VPs) can be absorbed into the fruit, where they can be then converted into volatile-phenol (VP) glycosides through glycosylation. These volatile-phenol glycosides can be particularly problematic from a winemaking standpoint as they can be hydrolyzed, releasing volatile phenols, which can contribute to smoke-related off-flavors. Current methods for quantitating these volatile-phenol glycosides present several challenges, including the requirement of expensive capital equipment, limited accuracy due to the molecular complexity of the glycosides, and the utilization of harsh reagents. To address these challenges, we proposed an enzymatic hydrolysis method enabled by a tailored enzyme cocktail of novel glycosidases discovered through genome mining, and the generated VPs from VP glycosides can be quantitated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The enzyme cocktails displayed high activities and a broad substrate scope when using commercially available VP glycosides as the substrates for testing. When evaluated in an industrially relevant matrix of Cabernet Sauvignon wine and grapes, this enzymatic cocktail consistently achieved a comparable efficacy of acid hydrolysis. The proposed method offers a simple, safe, and affordable option for smoke taint analysis.

Using mobile phones while riding is a form of distracted riding that significantly elevates crash risk. Regrettably, the factors contributing to mobile phone use while riding (MPUWR) among food delivery riders remain under-researched. Addressing this literature gap, the current study employs the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and various socio-economic factors to examine the determinants of MPUWR. The research incorporates data from 558 delivery workers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The study utilizes two analytical methods to empirically test the hypotheses, considering non-linear relationships between variables: Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The results reveal mixed impacts of factors connected to job resources. Although social support appears to deter MPUWR, work autonomy and rewards seemingly encourage it. Furthermore, a predisposition towards risk-taking behaviour significantly impacts the frequency of mobile phone usage among delivery riders. Interestingly, riders with higher incomes and those who have previously been fined by the police exhibit more frequent mobile phone use. The findings of this study present valuable insights into the crucial factors to be addressed when designing interventions aimed at reducing phone use among food delivery riders.
