Black older women were found to have a high mean level of adherence to recommended health-protecting behaviors. Participants perceived that adherence to health-protecting behaviors played a highly important role in helping them to live a long and health life. Nurses must direct increased attention and intervention to the importance of practicing primary prevention behaviors as an assertion of control over the future health, well-being, and quality of life of Black older women.

A description of the goals and the accomplishments of a program in geriatric education and training is presented. Emphasis is laid on the potential role of departments of family and community medicine, even though vast resources may not be available. Such a program is of great importance, but it must be viewed as only the first step in the development of a comprehensive training model for either a school of medicine or a residency program in primary care. Upon graduation in Family Medicine, residents should not only be aware of the specific health needs of the elderly, but also be clinically competent to meet those needs.

It is argued that the analysis-of-variance model is inappropriate for assessing treatment effects in single-subject designs. In particular, such designs are demonstrated to violate the crucial assumption concerning the statistical independence of observations. Alternative methods of data analysis are suggested.
