Against the backdrop of global warming, intensifying regional conflicts, deglobalization, and the spread of diseases, global food security is facing severe challenges. Studying the food security situation in China and the United States in depth can provide practical experience for formulating food security policies for countries around the world and promoting global food security governance. On the basis of a meticulous review of the evolving connotations of food security, this study adopts six dimensions-quantity security, quality security, circulation security, economic security, ecological resource security, and policy security-as breakthrough points to construct a framework consisting of food security evaluation indicator system comprising 29 specific indicators. The CRITIC-MEREC-MARCOS model is applied to evaluate the status of food security in China and the United States from 2000 to 2022, while the obstacle degree model (ODM) model is utilized to identify factors impeding food security between the two countries. The results indicate that the level of food security in China has shown slight fluctuations initially, followed by a steady upward trend. The gap with the United States is continuously narrowing. However, significant differences between China and the United States still exist in terms of economic security, ecological resource security, and policy security. Furthermore, due to the limited productivity of agricultural labor, scarcity of water and soil resources, and low efficiency in the use of fertilizers and pesticides, China's food security is subject to economic and environmental constraints. The restrictions imposed by economic security and ecological resource security on China's food security are showing an increasing trend year by year. For the United States, with the obstruction of grain exports and the increasing frequency of drought disasters, the impact of circulation security and ecological resource security on food security is becoming increasingly prominent. In the future, China and the United States should join hands to address challenges, actively promote international cooperation in food security, and drive sustainable development for humanity.

Shikonin is an active naphthoquinone with antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of shikonin on depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced depression and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rat models and explored the potential mechanism. First, a 14-day intraperitoneal administration of shikonin (10 mg/kg) significantly decreased immobility time in forced swimming test (FST) and increased open arm entries in elevated plus maze (EPM) test, without affecting line crossings in open field test (OFT), indicating that shikonin has anti-depressant- and anxiolytic-like effects. Second, chronic shikonin administration (10 mg/kg) reversed depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in LPS-induced and CUMS depression models, as shown in the sucrose preference test (SPT), FST, EPM, and novel object recognition test (NORT). Finally, shikonin significantly reduced the levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in hippocampus, indicating that the anti-depressant- and anxiolytic-like effects of shikonin are related to the reduction of neuroinflammation in hippocampus. These findings suggest that shikonin exerts anti-depressant- and anxiolytic-like effects via an anti-inflammatory mechanism of shikonin in the hippocampus.

Due to the very important role in physiological process, a simple and sensitive hemin detection method is necessarily required. Biomass-based carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) have been widely studied especially as fluorescence probe owing to the advantages of low toxicity and the variety of fluorescence color, yet there are still challenges in developing their multi-color emission property from the same raw materials. In this work, red, white and blue emissive CPDs derived from chlorophyll have been synthesized via hydrothermal method. Then white-emitted CPDs (white-CPDs) with the Commission International d'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates at (0.34, 0.32) were used to develop a fluorescence quenched sensing system for hemin determination. There is a good linear relationship between (F0-F)/F0 and concentration of hemin in the range of 0.1-0.95 µM with a detection limit of 0.043 µM, and the quenching mechanism was considered to be caused by inner filter effect (IFE). Moreover, it has been successfully used for hemin detection in serum and also for visual determination, which indicating great potential in applications of disease diagnoses and trace identification.

The PANK2 gene, which encodes mitochondrial pantothenate kinase 2 protein, is the disease-causing gene for pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN). We report a case of atypical PKAN with autism-like symptoms presenting with speech difficulties, psychiatric symptoms, and mild developmental retardation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed the typical "eye-of-the-tiger" sign. Whole-exon sequencing revealed PANK2 p.Ile501Asn/p.Thr498Ser compound heterozygous variants. Our study highlights the phenotypic heterogeneity of PKAN, which can be confused with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and requires careful clinical identification.

Our world needs to develop clean energy to reach the target of carbon peak and carbon neutralization. As one of clean energy, wind energy should contribute to energy conservation and emission reduction. Wind power generation is an important field of wind energy application. However, the fluctuation and intermittency of wind can affect the safety of power system. Therefore, prediction of wind power accurately for wind power safety, dispatching, and power grid development is significant. This paper proposes a prediction model of wind power, and predicts the wind power of two wind farms. For the complex wind speed series, the variational modal decomposition (VMD) method is used to reduce its volatility before prediction. And this paper presents an improved method to improve the prediction efficiency when least square support vector machine (LSSVM) predicts stationary series. The prediction result shows that the proposed model improves the prediction of wind power effectively, provides an effective method for wind farm to predict the wind power, and makes contributions to reducing carbon emissions and environmental protection.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant cancer with leading mortality worldwide. Circ_0067835 is a circRNA which plays an important role in various kinds of tumor, while the potential functions of circ_0067835 in HCC remains unclear. In this study, our results of microarray and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) showed that it was obviously elevated in human HCC tumor tissues and HCC cell lines. Inhibition of circ_0067835 restrained cell proliferation and migration in vitro. Furthermore, miR-1236-3p was decreased in tumor samples, and it was indicated to be a target of circ_0067835. Moreover, Twist2 was established to be elevated in HCC tissues, and we identified it as the direct target of miR-1236-3p. Finally, we found that knockdown of miR-1236-3p could reverse the circ_0067835 inhibition effects in HCC cells. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that circ_0067835 contributed to promoting hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation and metastasis through downregulating miR-1236-3p expression and then elevating Twist2 expression, which might provide a new vision for HCC patients.

Accumulating data suggest that the downregulation of DHCR24 is linked to the pathological risk factors of AD, denoting a potential role of DHCR24 in AD pathogenesis. However, it remains unclear whether the downregulation of DHCR24 affects the abnormal heper-phosphorylation of tau protein, which is involved in tauopathy. In present papers, immunofluorescence and Filipin III fluorescence results showed that DHCR24 knockdown significantly lowered the level of plasma membrane cholesterol and expression level of membrane lipid-raft structural protein caveolin-1; and overexpression of DHCR24 could increase the plasma membrane cholesterol levels and facilitating caveolae structure through increase the expression of caveolin-1. PP2A is the key phosphatase involving in tau phosphorylation, which is localized in cholesterol-dependent caveola/raft lipid domains. Here, the PP2A activity was detected by western blot assay. Interestingly, the level of p-PP2Ac at Y307 (inactive) and p-GSK3ß at Y216 (active) in the downstream of the PP2A signal pathway were both significantly increased in silencing DHCR24 SH-SY5Y cells, which denoted an inhibition of the PP2A and activation of GSK3ß signaling. Conversely, overexpression of DHCR24 blunted the inhibition effect of PP2A and activation of GSK3ß. Besides, in the SH-SY5Y cell lines we demonstrated that DHCR24 knockdown obviously induced hyperphosphorylation of tau at Thr181, Thr231, Ser262, Ser396, and Ser422 Sites. In contrast, DHCR24 overexpression protects neuronal SH-SY5Y cells against the hyperphosphorylation of tau at Thr181, Thr231, Ser262, Ser396, and Ser422 Sites. Furthermore, PP2A activator D-erythro-Sphingosine (DES) also obviously inhibited the hyperphosphorylation of tau induced by DHCR24 knockdown. Collectively, our findings firstly confirmed that DHCR24 knockdown obviously induced abnormal hyperphosphorylation of tau by a novel lipid raft-dependent PP2A signaling. We propose that DHCR24 downregulation led to altered cholesterol synthesis as a potential mechanism in the progression of tau hyperphosphorylation involving in AD and other tauopathies.

The judgment of microalgae viability is a vital procedure in the process of microalgae culture and treatment, which also plays an important role in bioremediation, bioindication, and pharmacology fields. The current conventional methods for defining living/dead microalgal cells are complicated or laborious. Hence, developing a simple and reliable detection method for microalgae viability is still challenging. Here, we developed chlorella-based carbonized polymer dots (c-CPDs) by a hydrothermal method. Due to their small average size of 5.0 nm, obvious excitation-dependent emission, stable fluorescence properties, and low toxicity, c-CPDs could be used for distinguishing living or dead chlorella by testing different fluorescence characteristics of c-CPD-labeled chlorella. Compared with conventional cellular dyes used for differentiating living/dead microalgae, c-CPDs significantly reduced toxicity, showing good sensitivity and reliability. This work provided a method to prepare environmentally friendly carbon dots (CDs) using microalgae, which had potential to be prepared on a large scale and might be applied feasibly in the preparation of doped CDs by controlling the growth of chlorella.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation is now recognized as a causal factor of aging. Resveratrol is a non-flavonoid compound that widely exists in plant species, exerting anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in animal models. The chemotaxis of inflammatory cells and secretion of cytokines are key characters in inflammation response. METHODS: The effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) chromosomal on the migration, inflammatory response, and apoptosis of monocytes were detected. THP-1 cells were used to study the effects of resveratrol treatment on LPS- and HMGB-induced monocytes. We aimed to investigate the effect of Resveratrol on monocyte migration and the expression of a special cytokine named HMGB1 in THP-1 cells. RESULTS: Resveratrol obviously inhibited THP-1 migration induced by LPS. LPS increased the expression of HMGB1 and its release in THP-1 cells, which were both decreased by resveratrol. Resveratrol inhibited the activity of NF-κB-p65 and the translocation of NF-κB-p65 from nucleus to cytoplasm induced by LPS. In addition, Resveratrol increased LPS and HMGB1-inhibited monocyte apoptosis. Resveratrol inhibited the LPS-induced HMGB1 secretion and its activation through NF-κB pathway. The THP-1 migration induced by LPS was inhibited by resveratrol. CONCLUSIONS: Resveratrol may inhibit monocyte migration and induce apoptosis by blocking downstream HMGB1/NF-κB/MCP-1 signaling pathways, thereby reducing systemic inflammation.

In recent decades, China has experienced rapid economic development accompanied by increasing concentrations of ambient PM2.5, particulate matter of less than 2.5 µm in diameter. PM2.5 is now believed to be a carcinogen, causing higher lung cancer risks and generating losses to the economy and society. This meta-analysis evaluates the losses generated by ambient PM2.5 in Suzhou from 2014 to 2016 and predicts losses at different concentrations. Estimations of total losses in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Dalian, and Xiamen are also presented, with a total national loss in 2015. The authors then demonstrate that lowering ambient PM2.5 concentrations would be a realistic way for China to reduce the evaluated social losses in the short term. Possible legal measures are listed for lowering ambient PM2.5 concentrations. IMPLICATIONS: The present findings quantify the economic effects of ambient PM2.5 due to the increased incidence rate and mortality rate of lung cancer. Lowering ambient PM2.5 concentrations would be the most realistic way for China to reduce tghe evaluated social losses in the short term. Possible legal measures for lowering ambient PM2.5 concentrations to reduce the total losses are identified.
