RESUMEN

Background and Objective: Dental education is unique, with clinical/practical learning much different from other professionals. In dentistry, students are exposed much earlier in their curriculum to patients, performing procedures under direct/indirect supervision. Hence, the present review attempted to assess the standing position of dentistry in blended learning worldwide. Materials and Methods: E-learning modality was at its primitive stage as food for thought among educational task force committees, with only a handful of developed and developing countries equipped with it. During this pandemic, "WhatsApp" became a savior, as it was a widely used educational device among dental teachers and students. Furthermore, it was easily applicable in places where there was difficulty in obtaining regular internet bandwidth, especially in remote/rural areas. It is noteworthy that blended learning/e-learning, when complemented with the conventional teaching method, upskill critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities. Blended learning or virtual reality education should be made feasible without disparity, worldwide. Mind training, both students and staff in hybrid e-learning, is the need of the hour not only to keep pace with digitalized dentistry but to prepare the students to face real-world situations. Conclusion: The sustainability of dental education should be rethought by dental schools with "Complimented Digital learning" wherever feasible, not only to cope with current trends but also to face unforeseen future challenges.

Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, particularly periodontitis, by virtue of its collagenolytic activity targeting collagen type I, the primary component of periodontal tissues. This review abstract elucidates the intricate involvement of MMP-1 in periodontal tissue homeostasis and its dysregulation in disease states. Elevated MMP-1 levels, observed in gingival tissues and crevicular fluid of individuals with periodontitis, correlate with the degradation of collagen fibers within the periodontium. This degradation contributes to the detachment of teeth from surrounding tissues and exacerbates alveolar bone resorption, hallmark features of periodontal breakdown. Therapeutically, targeting MMP-1 activity emerges as a promising strategy, prompting ongoing research into MMP inhibitors and host modulation therapies. Understanding MMP-1's nuanced role in periodontal diseases paves the way for personalized treatment approaches and holds promise in reshaping periodontal disease management for improved patient outcomes and periodontal health.

Background: On account of loss of eye following Rubella infection, a 13-month-old baby girl patient required a maxillofacial prosthesis to restore her facial esthetics and social health as she grows. Case presentation: The process of prosthesis fabrication began at the time of enucleation where a conformer was given. Post healing the procedure was completed in a span of 2 days taking adequate trials and cross references for the like-like appearance of the prosthesis. Conclusion: A heat-cure acrylic resin based prosthetic eye was delivered with adequate instructions on the insertion and removal and hygiene maintenance given to the care providers. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the impact of tobacco use on the composition and functions of the oral microbiome in healthy adult humans. Methods: We conducted a systematic search on PubMed, Web of Science, and Cinhal databases for literature published until 15 December 2023, to identify studies that have evaluated the oral microbiome with culture-independent next-generation techniques comparing the oral microbiome of tobacco users and non-users. The search followed the PECO format. The outcomes included changes in microbial diversity and abundance of microbial taxa. The quality assessment was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) (PROSPERO ID CRD42022340151). Results: Out of 2,435 articles screened, 36 articles satisfied the eligibility criteria and were selected for full-text review. Despite differences in design, quality, and population characteristics, most studies reported an increase in bacterial diversity and richness in tobacco users. The most notable bacterial taxa enriched in users were Fusobacteria and Actinobacteria at the phylum level and Streptococcus, Prevotella, and Veillonella at the genus level. At the functional level, more similarities could be noted; amino acid metabolism and xenobiotic biodegradation pathways were increased in tobacco users compared to non-users. Most of the studies were of good quality on the NOS scale. Conclusion: Tobacco smoking influences oral microbial community harmony, and it shows a definitive shift towards a proinflammatory milieu. Heterogeneities were detected due to sampling and other methodological differences, emphasizing the need for greater quality research using standardized methods and reporting. BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) is an oral condition cavity affecting 2.5 billion people worldwide. We aimed to assess the comparative efficacy and safety of available interventions in the management of RAU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic search of 3 databases (Medline, CENTRAL, Scopus) was performed to identify randomized control trials evaluating the efficacy of RAU interventions published until December 2022. A network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted on 4 outcomes: reduction in pain, duration of ulceration, the diameter of ulceration, and area of ulceration. The interventions are then arranged using the surface area under cumulative ranking (SUCRA). RESULTS: A total of 38 trials involving 2773 patients were included were included in quantitative synthesis by NMA. Our analysis showed that Diode laser [MD, -4.865 ± 1.951 (95%CI = (-8.690, -1.041)] was the most effective in reducing the pain score followed by Amlexanox [MD, -2.673 ± 1.075 (95%CI = -4.779, -0.566)]. Iralvex performed the best in reducing the duration of ulceration [MD, -6.481 ± 1.841 (95%CI = -10.090, -2.872)]. Diode laser, acacia nilotica with licorice formulation, and amlexanox were the most effective interventions for reduction of ulcer diameter. Majority of the trials reported absence of any adverse effects and those reported were mild. CONCLUSION: Our NMA has identified several interventions to be more effective than a placebo. Laser therapy may be an option for promoting pain management, however, most have only been tested in 1 or 2 trials. Further studies with rigorous methodology on larger samples are recommended to strengthen the current evidence.

Background: "In Law, a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In Ethics, he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so."-Immanuel Kant Medical ethics and law are integral components to ensure that healthcare is provided to the community with care and concern. It provides certain standards for health professionals to discharge the duties with utmost consideration to a suffering human being even as the society receives it with full faith and trust. Purpose: Ethics and law are both complementary in nature .They serve similar purposes and establish certain ground rules which help in guiding human behavior. Law consists of rules and regulations that govern society and helps in maintaining the order. It is developed externally and enforced to protect the citizens. Ethics, by its very meaning, is more subjective and consists of certain principles that guide individual behavior. It is more dictated by one's morals, values and integrity. The purpose of the code of ethics is to serve as a guide for individuals to perform their duties with integrity. Methods: There are 4 pillars of medical ethics which are defined as autonomy-respect for patient rights; beneficence-the duty to do good; non-maleficence-the duty to "not to do bad"; justice-to treat all people equally and equitably. This article is an attempt to introspect the relationship between medical ethics and law. Results: Medical ethics have been present from the time of Hippocrates' oath. Modern medicine codes of ethics ensure physicians strive for the highest possible standards of ethical behavior. In this world where modern tools are available for diagnostics at a price where the majority of the Indian population find it unaffordable, decision-making has become difficult. Conclusion: Although ethics and law are closely related, they are not the same. Ethical consideration may many times exceed the need of the law especially in health care. It is adherence to ethical principles that help in creating trust between the public and the health professional. However, certain behavior perceived as ethical for few may not be considered in the same manner by others. In the present modern environment, there may be certain challenges for ethical behavior, and perhaps, the law of the land helps in effectively maintaining certain decorum and ensuring minimal trust deficit.

Introduction: Orthopedic surgeons, owing to their specialized role, have a set of medical and moral responsibilities that span beyond the confines of the operating room. The primary objective of this exploration is to emphasize the pivotal ethical and professional standards that these surgeons should uphold. Methodology: We derived key ethical and professional aspects by reviewing standard medical practices, professional guidelines, and through consultations with senior orthopedic professionals. These aspects covered both the conduct inside the surgery room and the interpersonal relations outside. Results: Several core areas of conduct were identified.Patient-Centered Care: Prioritizing the holistic well-being of the patient.Communication: Ensuring that all communications are both transparent and respectful.Informed Consent: Properly securing consent after ensuring the patient is adequately informed.Confidentiality: Taking measures to safeguard patient information.Professional Behavior: Upholding the highest standards of professional conduct.Continuous Learning: Remaining committed to updating skills and enhancing competence.Interpersonal Relations: Building healthy and constructive relationships with industry representatives, professional peers, and hospital staff.Personal Life Balance: Recognizing the importance of a balanced personal and professional life for holistic well-being. Objective: To synthesise the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using Acacia catechu through biogenic synthesis and evaluate their antimicrobial efficacy against S. mutans and E. coli in vitro. Methods: Green synthesised AuNPs were characterised using the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and the size and shape of the synthesised nanoparticles were evaluated using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The antimicrobial efficacy of AuNPs (30/60/100 µl) against S. mutans/E. coli was evaluated on the Mueller-Hinton agar by measuring the zone of inhibition (ZOI) with ampicillin (15 µl) as a positive control. Results: The synthesised AuNPs were confirmed using the UV-Vis spectroscopy with peaks at 540 nm, and the size of the particle estimated using the TEM was between 5 and 15 nm. The antimicrobial efficacy of AuNPs was comparable to that of ampicillin against S. mutans/E. coli, but the difference was not significant. The antimicrobial effects increased in a dose-dependent fashion but were comparable across all concentrations and ampicillin. Conclusion: Green synthesised AuNPs exhibited significant antibacterial activity against S. mutans and E. coli at par with commercial ampicillin and demonstrated the potential towards anticariogenic agent for future use in dentistry.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical outcomes of implant-supported prostheses and tooth-supported fixed prostheses, fabricated from digital and conventional impression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature search was carried out on two electronic databases (PubMed and Cochrane Library). Randomized controlled trials (RCT) published from January 2011 to September 2022 were included. The bias risk was evaluated using Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. Further screening was done for meta-analysis according to modified Newcastle-Ottawa scoring criteria. Forest plot was generated using a statistical method of inverse variance of random effect with 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: A total of 8 randomized controlled trials were included for systematic review out of which four studies were based on tooth-supported fixed prosthesis and remaining four were based on implant-supported prosthesis. Further screening was conducted and three studies were eligible for meta-analysis. Tooth-supported fixed prosthesis fabricated from digital impression showed no significant difference in the marginal fit in any region measured, except for occlusal region where conventional impression showed more favorable marginal fit. Implant-supported prosthesis fabricated from digital impression showed survival rates ranging from 97.3 to 100% and there was no statistically significant difference in marginal bone loss (p = 0.14). CONCLUSION: Implant-supported prostheses fabricated from digital and conventional impressions show no significant differences in their clinical outcomes. Tooth-supported fixed prostheses fabricated from digital impression have shown favorable findings in terms of marginal fit. Despite that, there is still lack of clinical trials with larger sample size and longer follow-up periods. Future studies that fulfill these two criteria are deemed necessary.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is a chronic, progressive, and degenerative condition with limited therapy options. Recently, biologic therapies have been an evolving option for the management of osteoarthritis. PURPOSE: To assess whether allogenic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have the potential to improve functional parameters and induce cartilage regeneration in patients with osteoarthritis. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. METHODS: A total of 146 patients with grade 2 and 3 osteoarthritis were randomized to either an MSC group or placebo group with a ratio of 1:1. There were 73 patients per group who received either a single intra-articular injection of bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMMSCs; 25 million cells) or placebo, followed by 20 mg per 2 mL of hyaluronic acid under ultrasound guidance. The primary endpoint was the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) total score. The secondary endpoints were WOMAC subscores for pain, stiffness, and physical function; the visual analog scale score for pain; and magnetic resonance imaging findings using T2 mapping and cartilage volume. RESULTS: Overall, 65 patients from the BMMSC group and 68 patients from the placebo group completed 12-month follow-up. The BMMSC group showed significant improvements in the WOMAC total score compared with the placebo group at 6 and 12 months (percentage change: -23.64% [95% CI, -32.88 to -14.40] at 6 months and -45.60% [95% CI, -55.97 to -35.23] at 12 months P < .001; percentage change, -44.3%). BMMSCs significantly improved WOMAC pain, stiffness, and physical function subscores as well as visual analog scale scores at 6 and 12 months (P < .001). T2 mapping showed that there was no worsening of deep cartilage in the medial femorotibial compartment of the knee in the BMMSC group at 12-month follow-up, whereas in the placebo group, there was significant and gradual worsening of cartilage (P < .001). Cartilage volume did not change significantly in the BMMSC group. There were 5 adverse events that were possibly/probably related to the study drug and consisted of injection-site swelling and pain, which improved within a few days. CONCLUSION: In this small randomized trial, BMMSCs proved to be safe and effective for the treatment of grade 2 and 3 osteoarthritis. The intervention was simple and easy to administer, provided sustained relief of pain and stiffness, improved physical function, and prevented worsening of cartilage quality for ≥12 months. BACKGROUND/AIMS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Case Reports in Endodontics (PRICE) 2020 guidelines were published to help authors produce high-quality case reports. The aim of this study was to use the PRICE 2020 guidelines to appraise a sample of 50 case reports related to dental traumatology that were published before the guidelines were available in order to assess various parameters influencing the reporting quality. METHODS: Fifty case reports published between 2015 and 2019 and related to dental traumatology were randomly selected from the PubMed database. Reports were assessed by two independent evaluators using the PRICE checklist. Each item received a score of "1" if the manuscript met all pertinent criteria, "0" if it was not reported, and "0.5" if it was reported insufficiently. "Not Applicable" (NA) was assigned to items that were irrelevant to a specific report. The estimated total PRICE score for each case report was computed by adding all the scores, with a maximum score of 47 minus any "NA" scores. Descriptive and Inferential statistics (Student's t-test and ANOVA) were used for analysis. RESULTS: The percentage of case reports that fully met each applicable criteria ranged from 0% to 100%. The percentage of case reports partially satisfying each applicable criterion varied from 0% to 88%. There was a significant difference in scores for case reports published in journals with an impact factor compared with those without (p = .042). No significant difference was observed between the mean scores that compared the period of publication. There was no significant difference between journals that followed the CARE guidelines and those that did not. CONCLUSION: Several items within the PRICE 2020 guidelines were either not reported or only partially reported in case reports related to dental traumatology prior to the checklist publication. It is recommended that authors follow the PRICE 2020 guidelines to improve the overall quality of their case reports.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed to assess comparative efficacy and safety of interventions to treat symptomatic, biopsy-proven oral lichen planus (OLP). METHODS: Search was conducted for trials published in Medline, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Network meta-analysis was performed on data from randomized controlled trials that assessed efficacy and safety of interventions used in the treatment of OLP. Agents were ranked according to their effectiveness in treatment of OLP based on outcomes using surface under the cumulative ranking [SUCRA]. RESULTS: In total, 37 articles were included in the quantitative analysis. Purslane was clinically significant and ranked first in improving clinical symptoms [RR = 4.53; 95% CI: 1.45, 14.11], followed by aloe vera [RR = 1.53; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.24], topical calcineurin [RR = 1.38; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.81] and topical corticosteroid [RR = 1.35 95% CI: 1.05, 1.73]. Topical calcineurin demonstrated the highest incidence of adverse effects [RR, 3.25 [95% CI: 1.19, 8.86. Topical corticosteroids were significant in achieving clinical improvement of OLP with RR1.37 [95% CI: 1.03, 1.81]. PDT [MD = -5.91 [95% CI: -8.15, -3.68] and showed statistically significant improvement in the clinical score for OLP. CONCLUSIONS: Purslane, aloe vera and photodynamic therapy appear promising in treatment of OLP. More high-quality trials are recommended for strengthening the evidence. Although topical calcineurin is significantly efficacious in the treatment of OLP, significant adverse effects are a concern for clinical use. Based on the current evidence, topical corticosteroids are recommended for treatment of OLP owing to their predictable safety and efficacy.

Importance: Pain is a silent global epidemic impacting approximately a third of the population. Pharmacological and surgical interventions are primary modes of treatment. Cognitive/behavioural management approaches and interventional pain management strategies are approaches that have been used to assist with the management of chronic pain. Accurate data collection and reporting treatment outcomes are vital to addressing the challenges faced. In light of this, we conducted a systematic evaluation of the current digital application landscape within chronic pain medicine. Objective: The primary objective was to consider the prevalence of digital application usage for chronic pain management. These digital applications included mobile apps, web apps, and chatbots. Data sources: We conducted searches on PubMed and ScienceDirect for studies that were published between 1st January 1990 and 1st January 2021. Study selection: Our review included studies that involved the use of digital applications for chronic pain conditions. There were no restrictions on the country in which the study was conducted. Only studies that were peer-reviewed and published in English were included. Four reviewers had assessed the eligibility of each study against the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Out of the 84 studies that were initially identified, 38 were included in the systematic review. Data extraction and synthesis: The AMSTAR guidelines were used to assess data quality. This assessment was carried out by 3 reviewers. The data were pooled using a random-effects model. Main outcomes and measures: Before data collection began, the primary outcome was to report on the standard mean difference of digital application usage for chronic pain conditions. We also recorded the type of digital application studied (e.g., mobile application, web application) and, where the data was available, the standard mean difference of pain intensity, pain inferences, depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Results: 38 studies were included in the systematic review and 22 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The digital interventions were categorised to web and mobile applications and chatbots, with pooled standard mean difference of 0.22 (95% CI: -0.16, 0.60), 0.30 (95% CI: 0.00, 0.60) and -0.02 (95% CI: -0.47, 0.42) respectively. Pooled standard mean differences for symptomatologies of pain intensity, depression, and anxiety symptoms were 0.25 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.46), 0.30 (95% CI: 0.17, 0.43) and 0.37 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.69), respectively. A sub-group analysis was conducted on pain intensity due to the heterogeneity of the results (I 2 = 82.86%; p = 0.02). After stratifying by country, we found that digital applications were more likely to be effective in some countries (e.g., United States, China) than others (e.g., Ireland, Norway). Conclusions and relevance: The use of digital applications in improving pain-related symptoms shows promise, but further clinical studies would be needed to develop more robust applications. BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survivors may continue experiencing diverse symptoms. This study portrays the clinical and laboratory profile of patients with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19'(PASC) at a tertiary care hospital in India.  Methodology: This cross-sectional study enrolled patients visiting the post-COVID-19 clinic three weeks after their acute COVID-19 illness. Their clinical, serological, and radiological characteristics were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 259 participants (age: 48.02±15.27 years; 62.25% men), 168 had PASC manifestations. The most frequently reported symptoms were fatigue (n=71(42.26%)), breathlessness (n=38(22.61%)), and cough (n=35(20.83%)). Patients with PASC had higher body mass index (28.24±5.02 vs. 26.26±3.65; p=0.002), history of hypertension (52 (30.95%) vs. 17 (18.6%); p=0.039), uncontrolled systolic blood pressure (37 (22.03) vs. 14 (15.38); p=0.042), and persistent chest x-ray abnormalities (34 (20.23) vs. 10 (10.98); p=0.048). CONCLUSION: Fatigue, breathlessness, and cough are common PASC symptoms. Hypertension, obesity, and abnormal chest x-ray findings at follow-up are potential risk factors for developing PASC.

BACKGROUND: Hydroxychloroquine had attracted significant attention in the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic but current recommendations do not support its use. However, the evidence against its use as pre-exposure prophylaxis have been of low to moderate quality and have been limited by high risk of bias. METHODS: Following institutional ethics committee approval, healthcare workers (n = 1294) completing their first week-long COVID in-patient duty, subsequent institutional quarantine and RT-PCR testing for COVID-19 infection were included for this prospective cohort study. Demographic data, hydroxychloroquine usage and related adverse effects were captured through a 'Caring for the Caregivers' surveillance system. A chi-Square test of independence was used to determine the effect of hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis. RESULTS: Among the 1294 participants (age: 31 ± 7 years, 61% women), 273 (21.1%) healthcare workers used hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis as per Indian Council of Medical Research recommendations and 83/1294 (6.4%) tested positive after their duty. There was no significant difference in COVID-19 incidence between those on hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis and those not on it (5.9% vs 6.6%, χ2 = 0.177, p = 0.675; RR = 0.89, 95% CI - 0.53 to 1.52). There were no significant adverse effects to hydroxychloroquine usage. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated no benefit of hydroxychloroquine prophylaxis and provides quality evidence against its use in COVID-19 prevention.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate initial peri-implant crestal bone level changes when the allografts and xenografts were placed simultaneously during the implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was planned with the convenient sampling total of 77 implant sites that were bone grafted either with allografts (group I) or xenografts (group II). Using the periapical radiographs obtained after placement of bone grafts as baseline, the changes in the alveolar crestal bone around the implants were evaluated by comparing periapical radiographs taken at 3 months and 6 or 8 months after the surgery. RESULTS: The alveolar bone loss at crestal region at the time of placement of bone grafts were -1.85 ± 1.26 mm at the xenograft sites and -1.75 ± 1.51 mm at allograft sites, respectively (p = 0.791). At the time of reentry, 3 months after tooth extraction and ridge preservation, the bone dimensions were 1.17 ± 0.83 mm for xenograft and 1.00 ± 1.14 mm for allograft (p = 0.523). At the final reentry, bone-grafted sites were divided into after 6 months and after 8 months postoperatively. After 3 months, the allografts showed lesser bone resorption (0.9 ± 0.52 mm) as compared with the xenografts (1.25 ± 1.00 mm). The bone loss after 8 months for the allografts was spiked to 1.83 ± 0.42 mm as compared with the xenografts 1.37 ± 1.12 mm with no statistically significant difference (p >0.05). CONCLUSION: Both allografts and xenografts present comparable crestal bone level changes around dental implants when simultaneously placed during implant placement surgery. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Both allografts and xenografts are suitable for the preservation of the alveolar ridge regarding crestal bone level changes. Selection of allografts and xenografts may not be carried out based upon the crestal bone level changes.

AIM: Anatomical landmarks that remain fairly constant throughout an individual's life help determine the position of the artificial teeth closer to that of their predecessors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between the intercondylar widths (ICWs) and the interdental widths (IDWs) in the maxillary and mandibular arches in dentate subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in two parts, with 80 dentate subjects in total. Initially, in the first 40 subjects, a mathematical index was obtained by dividing the mean ICWs by the mean IDWs. In the second part, the ICW was measured and was used along with the index obtained in the first part, to estimate the IDW. These estimated values were then verified with the real IDWs by direct intraoral measurements. An arbitrary earpiece facebow (ARTEX® Gesichtsbogen Facebow) was used to measure the ICW. Statistics was done using SPSS software version 18 using Karl Pearson's correlation test and paired t-test. RESULTS: The IDW was correlated to the ICW; the maximal correlation was found between ICW and lower 6-6 width (L6-6W) (p value 0.033) and the lowest correlation was found between ICW and upper 6-6 width (U6-6W) (p value 0.046). CONCLUSION: ICW can be used as an additional guide to position denture teeth. This method suggested would result in a better buccolingual positioning of the posterior teeth, which would help avoid encroaching on the tongue space, thereby improving phonetics and speech with dentures. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: ICW bears a relationship with the IDWs in the maxillary and mandibular arches. ICW being a fairly constant anatomical landmark can be used as an additional guide aid in positioning the artificial teeth.

BACKGROUND: Dental ceramics are known for their natural appearance and their durable chemical and optical properties, and their uses mainly reflect their excellent aesthetic properties, biocompatibility and resistance to wear. In addition, dental ceramics are considered to be chemically inert restorative material with large differences in the chemical compositions and microstructures. Although ceramics exhibit excellent physical properties and biocompatibility, the oral environment presents a series of external factors that affect its physical and mechanical properties in its long term function. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to compare and evaluate the surface roughness of 2 dental ceramics (Noritake® & IPS Emax ceram) before and after exposure to an aerated drink, a mouthwash and simulated vomit solution with distilled water. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 128 ceramic discs were made, 16 for each of the 4 groups of 2 ceramics to be tested. It was fabricated in the form of discs of diameter 10 mm × 2 mm thickness. The test specimens were calibrated by grinding, using a medium grit diamond bur. Both the above specimens were divided into 4 groups of 16 each. They were then subjected to test solutions. Each specimen in a group was immersed in the following solutions: Coca-Cola, chlorhexidine mouthwash, simulated vomit solution and distilled water. RESULTS: The results analyzed statistically using one way ANOVA (analysis of variance), paired t test and independent t test. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that the surface roughness of the evaluated ceramics increased upon exposure to Coca-Cola, chlorhexidine mouthwash and simulated vomit solution. Simulated vomit solution caused the maximum change in surface roughness followed by coca cola and then chlorhexidine mouthwash. No changes were observed after immersion in distilled water. Noritake® showed slightly more resistance to change in surface profile when compared to IPS e.max.

AIM: Dental professionals are prone to have hearing impairment due to prolonged exposure of noise in dental college. The aim of the study was to assess the hearing ability of dental personnel working in Yenepoya Deemed to be University, Mangaluru, Karnataka, India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional exploratory study was conducted on 60 subjects (30 male and 30 female). Audiometric analysis was carried out using pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and otoacoustic emission test (OAE). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data were calculated and analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's honestly significant difference test. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was observed between hearing loss and its association with age, gender, working experience, mean daily working time, and specialization. PTA results showed a statistically significant hearing loss in the left ear, showing a dip at frequency of 4000 Hz among working experience group of 11-15 years and at 6000 Hz for 21-25 years. Also, a statistically significant hearing loss was observed in the left ear at 6000 and 8000 Hz for the age-group of 51-55 years. OAE results were consistent with PTA findings. CONCLUSION: Dentists and dental personnel are at a higher risk of noise-induced hearing loss. As the working experience increases, the threshold shift is seen to shift from 4000 to 6000 Hz, which is indicative of sensorineural hearing loss due to noise-induced dental environment.

AIM: Zirconia-based restoration is successfully replacing metal ceramic restorations in posterior areas. Although higher mechanical properties of zirconia, their use in compromised situation is questionable. Hence, there is a need to modify the design which to strengthen the framework. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of lingual collar design on the flexural strength of CAD/CAM-fabricated posterior three-unit zirconia framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mandibular metallic stainless steel master mold is designed for a three-unit fixed partial denture framework. All CAD-milled 20 samples are divided into two groups based on the design. Group A--with collar (10 samples) and Group B--without collar (10 samples), tested using universal testing machine to calculate the mean fracture load and flexural strength. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Descriptive statistics and independent sample t test were used to find the difference between the groups, and simple linear regression was used to find the relationship between load and displacement between the groups. RESULTS: The result of the mean flexural strength for Group A was 11328.06 ± 3770MPa and for Group B was 7633.95 ± 3196MPa; the mean fracture strength observed for Group A was 1274.04 ± 424MPa and for Group B was 858.80 ± 359MPa. A statistically significant difference was observed in flexural strength between Groups A and B (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Zirconia framework with connector dimension of 7 mm2 with lingual collar design can be successfully incorporated in compromised situation where an ideal connector dimension of 9 mm2 cannot be placed.
