RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Vertical femoral neck fractures (VFNFs) in young patients lead to significant biomechanical instability. Multitudinous internal fixation devices have been developed and utilized in clinical interventions. However, there has yet to be a consensus expert opinion regarding the optimal internal fixation configurations. This study aims to conduct a network meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of all currently recognized internal fixation procedures for the treatment of VFNFs in young individuals. METHODS: Comprehensive literature searches will be performed in China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Wanfang Database, and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, covering the entire database history up until May 21, 2024. Individual papers will be evaluated for possible bias using RoB 2.0, the most recent version of the randomized trial Cochrane risk-of-bias approach. Pairwise meta-analysis and network meta-analysis (NMA) will be conducted for data analysis using STATA 15.0 and R 4.1.3. Inconsistency tests, subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, and assessments of publication bias will also be performed. CONCLUSION: The study will provide evidence-based recommendations for the optimal internal fixation methods in treating young patients with VFNFs. TRIAL REGISTRATION: INPLASY202460017.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The post-processing technology of CTA offers significant advantages in evaluating left atrial enlargement (LAE) in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (PAF). This study aims to identify parameters for rapidly and accurately diagnosing LAE in patients with PAF using CT cross-sections. METHODS: Left atrial pulmonary venous (PV) CT was performed to 300 PAF patients with dual-source CT, and left atrial volume (LAV), left atrial anteroposterior diameter (LAD1), left atrial transverse diameter (LAD2), and left atrial area (LAA) were measured in the ventricular end systolic (ES) and middle diastolic (MD). LA index (LAI) = LA parameter/body surface area (BSA). Left atrial volume index (LAVIES) > 77.7 ml/m2 was used as the reference standard for the LAE diagnosis. RESULTS: 227 patients were enrolled in the group, 101 (44.5%) of whom had LAE. LAVES and LAVMD (r = 0.983), LAVIES and LAVIMD (r = 0.984), LAAES and LAVIES (r = 0.817), LAAMD and LAVIES (r = 0.814) had strong positive correlations. The area under curve (AUC) showed that all measured parameters were suitable for diagnosing LAE, and the diagnostic efficacy was compared as follows: LAA/LAAI> LAD> the relative value index of LAD, LAD2> LAD1. LAA and LAAI demonstrated comparable diagnostic efficacy, with LAA being more readily available than LAAI. CONCLUSIONS: The axial LAA measured by CTA can be served as a parameter for the rapid and accurate diagnosis of LAE in patients with PAF.

RESUMEN

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is currently one of the most important chemicals posing environmental risks, and there is an urgent need to find methods to efficiently remove PFOA from environmental media. Here, two decaamino-pillar[5]arene-based fluorine-rich polymer networks, called FA2P-P and FA6P-P, were constructed using a convenient method. FA6P-P had an excellent ability to take up PFOA, and had a capacity of 1423 (mg PFOA) (g FA6P-P) -1, which is the second highest adsorption capacity reported for any PFOA sorbent. FA6P-P removed >99% of the PFOA from a solution and decreased the PFOA concentration from 1000 µg L-1 in 5 min at an exceedingly low adsorbent loading of 0.7 mg L-1, giving a final PFOA concentration <4 ng L-1, which is lower than the most recent enforceable maximum concentration set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. A high rate constant (kobs) of 55.8 g mg-1 h-1 was observed. Pillar[5]arene gives the material hydrophobic properties and also amino sites and hydrophobic chains, which are synergistic PFOA binding sites. The polymer was very stable and readily regenerated. The results indicated that pillar[5]arene-based porous organic polymer sorbents are excellent candidates for capturing PFOA.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of surface electromyography combined with a spine 3D data system. METHODS: 10 idiopathic scoliosis patients (age: 12.90±3.67 years, height: 155.90±20.07 cm, weight: 48.00±12.86 kg, 6 major thoracic lateral bends and 4 lumbar bends) who were selected to attend the outpatient clinic of Ruijin Rehabilitation Hospital, First diagnosed as scoliosis by imaging examination (EOS system), evaluation by using the surface electromyography monitoring system, the radiation-free 3D spine data acquisition and analysis system, the surface electromyography of the paravertebral muscles (root mean square value (RMS) of the resting standing and action position of the spine) and the Cobb angle of scoliosis were recorded. RESULTS: The RMS of the convex side was larger than that of the concave side in the two postures (P<0.05), and The RMS value of bilateral action position was significantly higher than that of rest position (P<0.05). There was no correlation between RMS ratio and Cobb angle in two positions of thoracic scoliosis (P>0.05). There was a significant correlation between the RMS ratio at rest position of lumbar scoliosis and Cobb angle. At rest, the RMS value of convex side was significantly correlated with the Cobb angle measured by the EOS system and the 3D data system (P<0.05, of which P<0.01). The Cobb angle measured by 3D data system and the EOS system was significantly correlated (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Surface EMG can be used to evaluate the motor function of paravertebral muscles on both sides of scoliosis patients. The new 3D data system has high accuracy in evaluating scoliosis. The combination of the two can dynamically evaluate scoliosis, which is more clinically effective.

RESUMEN

Nutrient exchange with the East China Sea plays an important role in primary production in the Yellow Sea. Owing to lack of simultaneous observations, the spatiotemporal nutrient exchanges across the boundary between the Yellow Sea and East China Sea (Section YE) remain unclear. In this study, a three-dimensional physical-biogeochemical coupled model was used to determine the flux of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) across Section YE. The results showed that DIN was transported from the East China Sea to the Yellow Sea throughout the year and was highest in summer, accounting for 38 % of the total annual amount. Seasonal variations in the DIN flux were attributed to seasonal variations in the ocean currents across Section YE. In the Yellow Sea, the annual amount of DIN from lateral boundaries was larger than the river input and was comparable to the atmospheric deposition.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Selenium, an essential micronutrient for human and has been reported to have a protective effect in ulcerative colitis (UC). However, the role of selenium in UC is unclear. Our aim was to investigate the mechanism of action of selenium in UC. METHODS: Serum selenium levels were measured in UC patients and healthy controls. In addition, the effect of sodium selenite supplementation on experimental colitis in mice treated with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) was investigated. The effect of sodium selenite on IECs ferroptosis was evaluated by observing the cell mortality, intracellular ferrous content, lipid reactive oxygen species and mitochondrial membrane damage in DSS-treated Caco2 cells. In addition, glutathione peroxidase 4 (Gpx4) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 (Nrf2) were detected in Caco2 cells and mouse intestines to explore their mechanisms. RESULTS: The serum selenium content of UC patients was lower than that of healthy subjects. In addition, serum selenium levels were negatively correlated with disease activity. The in vivo results showed that selenium treatment could improve colitis induced by DSS and inhibit IECs ferroptosis. The in vitro results further showed that selenium inhibited the ferroptosis of Caco-2 cells induced by DSS. Nrf2/Gpx4 was up-regulated after selenium supplementation in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: Serum selenium level is associated with IECs ferroptosis in UC patients. Selenium can relieve DSS-induced colitis and inhibit IECs ferroptosis by up-regulating the expression of Nrf2/Gpx4.

RESUMEN

Palbociclib, a selective CDK4/6 inhibitor with potent anti-tumor effects, was investigated for its interaction with human α1-acid glycoprotein (HAG). Spectral analysis revealed that palbociclib forms a ground state complex with HAG, exhibiting binding constant (Kb) of 104 M-1 at the used temperature range. The interaction between the two was determined to be driven mainly by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic forces. Multispectral studies indicated that the bound palbociclib altered the secondary structure of HAG and reduced polarity around Trp and Tyr amino acids. And, molecular docking and dynamics simulations verified the experimental findings. Finally, most of the metal ions present in plasma, such as K+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, and Co2+, are detrimental to the binding of palbociclib to HAG, with the exception of Zn2+, which is favorable.

RESUMEN

The family Diatrypaceae is a less well-known group within the order Xylariales (Ascomycota). Initially, the focus on its metabolites was related to the pathogenicity of one of its members, Eutypa lata. To date, a total of 254 natural products have been identified from Diatrypaceae strains. These compounds include terpenoids, sterols, polyketones, phenols, and acetylene aromatic compounds, which have shown anticancer, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral activities. The complex and diverse structural types, along with the diverse bioactivities, highlight the potential of Diatrypaceae as a valuable source of bioactive natural products. In this review, a deep analysis of the biosynthesis of pimarane diterpenes and scoparasin-type cytochalasins is provided, coupled with a compilation of the biosynthetic pathways of aromatic acetylene compounds in filamentous fungi. This comprehensive review not only enhances our understanding of the natural product chemistry, biological activities, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites from the Diatrypaceae family but also promotes the exploitation and development of important bioactive compounds and potential strains.

RESUMEN

Background: Urinary incontinence following prostate treatment (IPT) represents a significant complication that detrimentally impacts the quality of life for patients who have undergone prostate surgery. Presently, there is a scarcity of evidence regarding the preferred surgical techniques for IPT. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare the outcomes of the male sling and artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) in the treatment of IPT. Methods: Data were extracted through electronic literature searches on PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases until September 2023. Eligible studies included patients who underwent AUS or male sling procedures for IPT and had a follow-up duration exceeding 12 months. The primary end point was the success rate, with the secondary outcome focusing on complication rates. A fixed-effects or random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled estimate and its 95% confidence interval (CI). The publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Egger's regression test. Results: The meta-analysis included nine studies, involving a total of 1,350 participants. No statistically significant difference in success rates was found between AUS and male sling [odds ratio (OR): 0.96, 95% CI: 0.91-1.01]. In terms of the complication rate, there was no significant disparity between the two procedures (OR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.86-1.12). Conclusions: The findings from this study indicated that male sling surgery yielded success and complication rates comparable to those of AUS. This suggests that male sling could serve as a viable alternative surgical option in the treatment of IPT.

RESUMEN

Thaumatin-like proteins (TLPs) in plants play a crucial role in combating stress, and they have been proven to possess antifungal properties. However, the role of TLPs in pathogens has not been reported. We identified a effector protein, Pt9029, which contained a Thaumatin domain in Puccinia triticina (Pt), possessing a chloroplast transit peptide and localized in the chloroplasts. Silencing Pt9029 in the Pt physiological race THTT resulted in a notable reduction in virulence and stunted growth and development of Pt hypha in near-isogenic wheat line TcLr2b. Overexpression of Pt9029 in wheat exerted a suppressive effect on H2O2 production, consequently impeding the wheat's disease resistance mechanisms. The TLP domain of Pt9029 targets the Rubisco activase (TaRCA) in chloroplasts. This interaction effectively inhibited the function of TaRCA, subsequently leading to a decrease in Rubisco enzyme activity. Therefore, this indicates that TLPs in Pt can inhibit host defense mechanisms during the pathogenic process of Pt. Moreover, TaRCA silencing resulted in reduced resistance of TcLr2b against Pt race THTT. This clearly demonstrated that TaRCA positively regulates wheat resistance to leaf rust. These findings reveal a novel strategy exploited by Pt to manipulate wheat rust resistance and promote pathogenicity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Primary insomnia is a substantial public health burden, but current treatments for this disorder have limited effectiveness and adherence. Herein, we aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) for the treatment of primary insomnia. METHODS: This two-armed, randomized, sham-controlled trial was conducted at Peking University Sixth Hospital and local community clinics. A total of 46 patients with primary insomnia were recruited and randomly allocated to either the cTBS group or sham group. Forty-one patients completed 10 sessions of cTBS or sham intervention and follow-up assessments. RESULTS: After the intervention, the severity of insomnia was significantly lower in the cTBS group than in the sham group, with a large effect size (Cohen's d = -1.938). Additionally, 52.4 % of patients in the cTBS group achieved a response (Insomnia Severity Index score reduction ≥8), whereas only 4 % of patients in the sham group achieved a response. The duration of objective total sleep time and slow-wave sleep were higher in the cTBS group than in the sham group. The degree of anxiety was lower in the cTBS group than in the sham group. There were no significant differences in depression, sleepiness, or cognitive function between the cTBS and sham groups. During follow-up, the sleep quality of the cTBS group significantly improved and remained stable at the 6-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: In this randomized clinical trial, cTBS improved insomnia symptoms and was generally well tolerated, thus supporting the further development of cTBS for the treatment of primary insomnia.

RESUMEN

Schisandra chinensis, a traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely applied in China to treat diabetes and its complications. The aim of this study was to discover the active compounds and explain related molecular mechanism contributing to the anti-diabetic effect of Schisandra chinensis. Herein, the therapeutic effects of Schisandra chinensis extracts on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were firstly confirmed in vivo. Subsequently, various lignans were isolated from Schisandra chinensis and tested for hypoglycemic activity in palmitic acid-induced insulin-resistant HepG2 (IR-HepG2) cells. Among these lignans, R-biar-(7S,8R)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-1,2,3,12,13,14-hexamethoxy-7,8-dimethyl-7-dibenzo [a, c] cyclooctenol (compound 2) and Gomisin A (compound 4) were identified significantly increased the glucose consumption in IR-HepG2 cells. Meanwhile, compounds 2 and 4 activated the insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1)/phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Ak strain transforming (AKT) pathway, which regulates glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), essential for gluconeogenesis and glucose uptake. These compounds also inhibited the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway, reducing interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels. Importantly, the hypoglycemic effects of compounds 2 and 4 were diminished after Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) knockdown. Cellular thermal shift assays confirmed increased TLR4 protein stability upon treatment with these compounds, indicating direct binding to TLR4. Furthermore, TLR4 knockdown reversed the effects of compounds 2 and 4 on the NF-κB and IRS-1/PI3K/AKT pathways. Taken together, compounds 2 and 4 alleviate IR by targeting TLR4, thereby modulating the NF-κB and IRS-1/PI3K/AKT pathways. These findings suggest that compounds 2 and 4 could be developed as therapeutic agents for T2DM.

RESUMEN

With the development of material science and increasing awareness of ecological environmental protection, liquid biodegradable mulch films (LBDMs) have garnered significant public interest. In this research, new LBDMs were developed using hydrophobically modified polymer materials, surfactants, and photosensitive catalysts. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed good material compatibility. LBDMs exhibited excellent wettability and degradability, effectively covering soil surfaces and enhancing soil moisture conservation, with a degradation rate of 76.09% after 80 days of burial. The field performance experiment was conducted over two consecutive years, 2021 and 2022, to assess differences in soil temperature and moisture, peanut agronomic traits, pod traits, and yield under four treatments: non-mulching (CK), LBDMs, clear polyethylene mulch films (CPEMs), and black polyethylene mulch films (BPEMs). LBDMs increased soil temperature by 0.56 °C and soil moisture by 19.25%, accelerated the seedling stage by 4-to-6 days, and improved the average emergence rate by 15.91%. Furthermore, LBDMs significantly promoted peanut growth, and it increased yield by 14.34% compared to CK. LBDMs performed comparably to the two types of PE films in maintaining soil conditions and different crop phenotype traits, including plant height, branch number, yield, and quality, and they even outperformed PE films in productivity per plant and 100-kernel weight. These findings suggest that LBDMs are a promising eco-friendly alternative to traditional PE films.

RESUMEN

The Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) constitutes a significant hydrological feature in the Yellow Sea, particularly prominent during winter, facilitating the transport of warm, saline waters and warm-water species from the open sea to the Bohai and Yellow Seas. The YSWC induces alterations in the community structure and function of zooplankton. However, the effects of the YSWC on the functional trait compositions and functional groups of zooplankton remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the influence of the YSWC on the community structure, functional trait composition, and functional groups of zooplankton during winter of 2016. The YSWC significantly impacted the zooplankton assemblage in the central Yellow Sea (CYSA), resulting in notable distinctions from the Shandong coastal assemblage (SCA) and Jiangsu coastal assemblage (JCA). Compared to the SCA and JCA (comprising 45 and 34 taxa, with abundances of 119.4 ± 114.6 ind·m-3 and 82.8 ± 62.1 ind·m-3, respectively), the CYSA exhibited higher species richness and abundance (with 51 taxa and 144.4 ± 103.4 ind·m-3, respectively). This study documented a total of 11 warm-water species, showing a decreasing trend in both species richness and abundance from south to north. The CYSA was characterized by the predominance of medium‒sized, current‒feeding, omnivorous‒herbivorous broadcast spawners, whereas the SCA and the JCA were predominantly dominated by giant‒sized, ambush‒feeding carnivores. The Qingdao-Shidao anticyclonic eddy in the southern of Shandong Province led to a significant increase in the abundance of zooplankton, potentially impacting Yellow Sea fishery resource. This research contributed to a deeper understanding of how YSWC influence the zooplankton community and offered fresh insights into the effects of YSWC on zooplankton function traits and functional groups.

RESUMEN

Cultured fat is an important part of cultured meat, and the ability of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) to differentiate into mature adipose tissue affects the quality of cultured fat. Thus, the primary aim of this study was to screen for combinations of differentiation-inducing factors (DIF) using single-factor experiment and orthogonal experimental design under two-dimensional culture conditions for ADSCs. The results showed that a combination of DIF consisting of 1 µmol/L dexamethasone, 0.1 mmol/L 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, 10 µg/mL insulin, 0.1 mmol/L indomethacin, and 2 µmol/L rosiglitazone was a good choice for the differentiation of ADSCs. An combination of DIF was applied to the preparation of cultured fat with collagen as scaffolds. Forty-eight fatty acids were detected in cultured fat by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Among them, the content of twenty-one fatty acids in cultured fat was significantly higher than that of conventional porcine subcutaneous adipose tissue (P < 0.05), and the content of 14 fatty acids was not significantly different (P > 0.05). The ratio of ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids content to ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids content was 1.23:1, which meant cultured fat was beneficial for human health. This study provides a method to improve the differentiation ability of ADSCs while also providing a reference for indicating the nutritional value of cultured fat.

RESUMEN

A new convenient method for identifying colorant compounds (CCs) in food matrices was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector and quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (HPLC-DAD-Q/TOF-MS) combined with theoretical calculations. A model sample containing three typical CCs was completely separated via HPLC-DAD. The obtained 3D ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra revealed the maximum absorption wavelengths (MAWs) of all CCs (yellow, 430 nm; red, 520 nm; blue, 620 nm) in the range of 400-800 nm, and their colors were determined based on their MAWs. Temporary structures of the CCs were obtained using Q/TOF-MS analysis. Theoretical calculations were then performed to obtain the theoretical MAWs and colors of the CCs according to their calculated UV-vis spectra based on temporary structures. The structures of the CCs were confirmed without the need for authoritative standards by comparing the consistency between their experimental and theoretical MAWs and colors. This method is particularly suitable for identifying CCs or compounds with UV-Vis absorption, including new compounds, compounds for which standards are difficult to obtain, and known compounds without reporting relevant molecular information.

RESUMEN

'Anode-free' Li metal batteries offer the highest possible energy density but face low Li coulombic efficiency when operated in carbonate electrolytes. Here we report a performance improvement of anode-free Li metal batteries using p-block tin octoate additive in the carbonate electrolyte. We show that the preferential adsorption of the octoate moiety on the Cu substrate induces the construction of a carbonate-less protective layer, which inhibits the side reactions and contributes to the uniform Li plating. In the mean time, the reduction of Sn2+ at the initial charging process builds a stable lithophilic layer of Cu6Sn5 alloy and Sn, improving the affinity between the Li and the Cu substrate. Notably, anode-free Li metal pouch cells with tin octoate additive demonstrate good cycling stability with a high coulombic efficiency of ~99.1%. Furthermore, this in situ p-block layer plating strategy is also demonstrated with other types of p-block metal octoate, as well as a Na metal battery system, demonstrating the high level of universality.

RESUMEN

In future regenerative medicine, far-infrared radiation (FIR) may be an essential component of optical therapy. Many studies have confirmed or validated the efficacy and safety of FIR in various diseases, benefiting from new insights into FIR mechanisms and the excellent performance of many applications. However, the lack of consensus on the biological effects and therapeutic parameters of FIR limits its practical applications in the clinic. In this review, the definition, characteristics, and underlying principles of the FIR are systematically illustrated. We outline the therapeutic parameters of FIR, including the wavelength range, power density, irradiation time, and distance. In addition, the biological effects, potential molecular mechanisms, and preclinical and clinical applications of FIR are discussed. Furthermore, the future development and applications of FIR are described in this review. By applying optimal therapeutic parameters, FIR can influence various cells, animal models, and patients, eliciting diverse underlying mechanisms and offering therapeutic potential for many diseases. FIR could represent a superior alternative with broad prospects for application in future regenerative medicine.
