RESUMEN

Today East Asia harbors many "relict" plant species whose ranges were much larger during the Paleogene-Neogene and earlier. The ecological and climatic conditions suitable for these relict species have not been identified. Here, we map the abundance and distribution patterns of relict species, showing high abundance in the humid subtropical/warm-temperate forest regions. We further use Ecological Niche Modeling to show that these patterns align with maps of climate refugia, and we predict species' chances of persistence given the future climatic changes expected for East Asia. By 2070, potentially suitable areas with high richness of relict species will decrease, although the areas as a whole will probably expand. We identify areas in southwestern China and northern Vietnam as long-term climatically stable refugia likely to preserve ancient lineages, highlighting areas that could be prioritized for conservation of such species.

Polymorphisms of the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) gene have been reported to be potentially associated with the risks of developing frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), with inconsistent conclusions. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the potential role of TREM2 variants in FTLD risks via a meta-analysis. We included a total of eight eligible articles. For TREM2 rs75932628, we observed a significantly increased FTLD risk in the models of T vs. C [Association Test, odds ratio (OR) = 2.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.43∼4.14, P = 0.001], CT vs. CC (OR = 2.27, 95% CI = 1.39∼3.71, P = 0.001), CT + TT vs. CC (OR = 2.27, 95% CI = 1.38∼3.71, P = 0.001), and Carrier T vs. C (OR = 2.26, 95% CI = 1.38∼3.69, P = 0.001). Similarly, we observed positive results for TREM2 rs2234253 in all of the genetic models (all OR > 1, P = 0.030). Nevertheless, we did not observe any statistical difference between the case and control groups in the pooled analyses of TREM2 rs142232675 and rs143332484 (all P > 0.05). Our findings identified the rs75932628 and rs2234253 polymorphisms of the TREM2 gene as risk factors for FTLD in Caucasian populations.

We performed an updated meta-analysis to assess the role of the ε2/ε3/ε4 alleles of Apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). The relevant articles were retrieved from PubMed, CENTRAL, EMBASE and Web of Science databases, and 51 eligible case-control studies with 5123 cases and 20566 controls were selected after screening according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Our analysis demonstrated that APOE ε4 was associated with increased FTLD risk in all genetic models (ε4 vs. ε3 allele, ε4 vs. ε2 allele, ε4 vs. ε2+ε3+ε4 allele, ε4 vs. ε2+ε3+ε4 carrier, ε4ε4 vs. ε3ε3, ε3ε4 vs. ε3ε3, ε3ε4+ε4ε4 vs. ε3ε3, ε4ε4 vs. ε3ε3+ε3ε4, all P < 0.01, odds ratio [OR] > 1). Subgroup analysis revealed significant association between APOE ε4 and FTLD (P < 0.01, OR > 1) for the Caucasian, Italian, population based (PB), P > 0.05 value of the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE), Newcastle-Ottawa scale score > 6, and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) subgroups. However, there was no significant association between the APOE ε2 allele and FTLD (P > 0.05) in most genetic models and sub-group analyses. Begg's and Egger's tests also revealed no publication bias, and sensitivity analysis showed that our data analysis was robust. Thus our meta-analyses suggest that APOE ε4 is a genetic risk factor in patients with FTLD.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: The possible persistence of wild Ginkgo biloba populations in China has long been debated but never scientifically confirmed. We test our hypothesis that the extant Ginkgo populations in the Dalou Mountains (SW China) represent fragments of the original natural Ginkgo range and offer a range of pertinent perspectives on the living fossil Ginkgo's history, prehistory, ecology, and place in human culture-all important aspects of this highly valued species. METHODS: We analyzed the vegetation of the study area, determined the population age structure of Ginkgo, and compared it to existing fossil records. For supporting material, we also examined records of the lack of human presence before the mid-17th century in the area, the local people's beliefs regarding preservation of the forests and existing genetic studies. KEY RESULTS: Current species composition of Ginkgo forests in the Dalou Mountains agrees closely with floristic assemblages from fossil records bearing G. biloba. Current populations are found in habitats similar to those of fossil Ginkgo, which, as today, favored rock crevices. Female to male ratios are 3:2. Estimated ages for many of the trees show that Ginkgo was present in this area prior to human settlement and indigenous peoples of this area are unlikely to have planted Ginkgo because of traditional beliefs. Our results agree with existing genetic studies that show that these mountains were glacial refugia for G. biloba. CONCLUSIONS: The corroborative evidence confirms the finding that these populations represent fragments of the original natural Ginkgo in the valley and lower mountain slopes of the Dalou Mountains.

With medicinal plant Erigeron breviscapus as test material, its biomass and the contents and yields of scutellarin and caffeate were monitored under doubled (800 +/- 100) micromol x mol(-1) and natural (400 +/- 25) micromol x mol(-1) CO2 concentration. Comparing with those under natural CO2 concentration, the biomass of E. breviscapus under doubled CO2 concentration increased by 22%, the contents of scutellarin and caffeate increased by 23% and 26%, and the yields of these two constituents increased by 37.6% and 45.3%, respectively. Different organs had different responses in their biomass and active constituent contents to the elevated CO2 concentration. Under doubled CO2 concentration, the plant N content decreased by 47.2% and was negatively correlated with active constituent contents, being accorded well to the C/N balance hypothesis, and the biomass was positively correlated with the active constituent contents while no trade-off was observed between plant growth and secondary metabolism, suggesting that rational application of CO2 could improve the yield and quality of E. breviscapus.
