RESUMEN

The external PIXE analysis yielded valuable information on the constituent elements of the paper, inks, and illumination of a handwritten document belonging to the Timurid dynasty (1485 A.D). The inks were found to be different in terms of their constituent matrix and trace elements. The applied inks are classified into three groups according to their relative concentration of Ca and Fe. The characteristic elements of the pigments suggested their origin. The chemical interaction of the green pigment, which influences the degradation of the paper, is discussed. The results aid the conservator in making treatment decisions. Moreover, the presented data allows the assignment of the provenance and a probable dating of similar samples via the chronology of the used pigments.

RESUMEN

To develop a strategy for the elimination of prefibrillar amyloid aggregates, a three-step non-modified DNA aptamer conjugation on silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles was carried out to achieve aptamer conjugated on MNP (Ap-SiMNP). Prefibrillar amyloid aggregates are generated under a diabetic condition which are prominently participated in developing diabetic complications. The binding properties of candidate DNA aptamer against serum albumin prefibrillar amyloid aggregates (AA20) were verified using electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR) analysis. The chloro-functionalized silica-coated MNPs were synthesized then a nano-targeting structure as aptamer conjugated on MNP (Ap-SiMNP) was constructed. Finally, Ap-SiMNP was verified for specific binding efficiency and AA20 removal using an external magnetic field. The candidate aptamer showed a high binding capacity at EMSA and SPR analysis (KD = 3.4 × 10─9 M) and successfully used to construct Ap-SiMNP. Here, we show a proof of concept for an efficient bio-scavenger as Ap-SiMNP to provide a promising opportunity to consider as a possible strategy to overcome some diabetic complications through specific binding/removal of toxic AA20 species.

RESUMEN

Proper priming techniques are among the most important methods for increasing seed germination and seedling growth. Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of plant hormone (500 and 1000 mg/L gibberellic acid (GA)), magnetic field (3, 15, 30 mili Tesla (mT)) and laser irradiation at 650 nm (200 mW) on the germination and the growth of Salvia officinalis. We examined the plumule and radical length, plumule and radical fresh weight, plumule and radical dry weight, germination percentage, germination rate and seed vigor. The two concentrations of GA significantly increased seed germination and seedling growth. The magnetic field at 15 mT significantly increased radical length. The effect of laser irradiation was also significant on plumule length, and fresh and dry weight, radicle fresh weight, germination percentage and rate and seed vigor. Such results may be of practical use in the field, especially in arid and semiarid areas, but more research must determine the response of medicinal sage, treated with the priming techniques tested in our experiments, under stress conditions.

RESUMEN

Oxidative stress and a disrupted antioxidant system are involved in a variety of pregnancy complications. In the present study, the role of vitamin E (Vit E) and folate as radical scavengers on the GSH homeostasis in stress oxidative induced in rat endometrial cells was investigated. Primary endometrial stromal cell cultures treated with 50 and 200 µM of H2O2 and evaluated the cytoprotective effects of Vit E (5 µM) and folate (0.01 µM) in H2O2-treated cells for 24 h. Following the exposure of endometrial cells to H2O2 alone and in the presence of Vit E and/or folate, cell survival, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase activities and the level of reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured. Cell adhesions comprise of cell attachment and spreading on collagen were determined. Flow cytometric analysis using annexin V was used to measure apoptosis. H2O2 treatment showed a marked decrease in cell viability, GPx and GR activities and the level of GSH. Although Vit E or folate had some protective effect, combination therapy with Vit E and folate attenuated all the changes due to H2O2 toxicity. An increasing number of alive cells was showed in the cells exposed to H2O2 (50 µM) accompanied by co-treatment with Vit E and folic acid. The present findings indicate that co-administration of Vit E and folate before and during pregnancy may maintain a viable pregnancy and contribute to its clinical efficacy for the treatment of some idiopathic infertility.

RESUMEN

Adenotonsillectomy has a high incidence of postoperative pain. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of either ketamine or fentanyl for postoperative pain relief in children following adenotonsillectomy. Sixty children aged 3-12 years, scheduled for adenotonsillectomy, were enrolled in this randomized, double-blind study. Patients were divided into two groups of 30 cases and received intravenous ketamine (0.5 mg kg(-1)) or fentanyl (1 microg kg(-1)). Modified Hannallah pain scale or Observational Pain Scores (OPS), nausea, vomiting, bleeding, rescue analgesia, sedation and post-anesthesia recovery scores were recorded both at first and 15th minute postoperatively. Moreover, patients receiving ketamine (group 1) or fentanyl (group 2) had comparable OPS and sedation score both on arrival and at 15th minute in the recovery room (p > 0.05). Although rescue analgesics were similarly required in both groups (p > 0.05), the time to reach rescue analgesia was shorter in group 1 (p = 0.001). Only one patient in fentanyl group had nausea and vomiting in the first 15 min that needed antiemetic in the recovery room. In conclusion, intravenous fentanyl (1 microg kg(-1)) compared with intravenous ketamine (0.5 mg kg(-1)) might provide extended time to first analgesic in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy. Interestingly, fentanyl and ketamine did not differ in post-operative vomiting.

RESUMEN

The carbohydrate contents of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is an important industrial factor for crystal sugar or bioethanol production. In this study the relationship between growth analysis and carbohydrate contents were studied to recognize the best growth stages for sweet sorghum harvesting. Five sweet sorghum cultivars and four sweet sorghum lines were evaluated for leaf area index (LAI), net assimilation rate (NAR), relative growth rate (RGR) and stem crop growth rate (CGR) in relation to sucrose content, invert sugars and total sugar at booting, soft-dough, hard dough and post grain maturity Except at post grain maturitystage, the correlations among LAI, NAR and RGR forsucrose content and total sugar were positive and forinvert sugars were negative. The relationship between invert sugars including glucose, fructose, maltose and xylose athard dough stage regarding LAI, NAR and GRG were negative. As plant grows LAI, NAR and RGR increases which consequently increases sucroses content and decrease invert sugar.

RESUMEN

To determine the extent of achievement of goal low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) as defined by National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel II (NCEP-ATP 11) and American Diabetes Association (ADA) 2000 guidelines, we conducted a retrospective study by integrating data from medical, laboratory, and pharmacy claims databases. Subjects were selected from a 232,000-member staff-model managed care organization consisting of 19 clinics in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, metropolitan area. A total of 124,971 members aged 18 years and older, who had been continuously enrolled from July 1, 1996-June 6, 1998, were included. Outcome measures were the extent of achievement of goal LDL as defined by NCEP-ATP II and the use of antihyperlipidemic drugs for patients with and without diabetes at various levels of risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Of 124,971 subjects, 6538 had a history of CHD, 1523 of whom met their LDL goal. Of the population with CHD who did not achieve goal, 1141 (43%) missed by over 30 mg/dl; 621 (54%) of these patients were not receiving drug therapy A total of 17,267 had no history of CHD but had two or more risk factors; 3,298 of these achieved their LDL goal. Of those who did not achieve goal, 1,136 (35%) missed by over 30 mg/dl; 897 (79%) of these were not receiving drug therapy A total of 6,586 had a history of diabetes; 1,004 and 2,340 reached an LDL of 100 mg/dl or lower and less than 130 mg/dl, respectively Of those with diabetes who had an LDL greater than 100 mg/dl, 1,276 (49%) missed their goal by over 30 mg/dl; 898 (70%) of these were not receiving drug therapy. Inadequate use of pharmacologic agents plays a significant role in failure to achieve goal LDL for patients with CHD, without CHD, and with diabetes. Analysis of the data based on the new ADA guidelines for LDL demonstrates the need for continued vigilance. Finally, the successful merging of medical, laboratory, and pharmacy claims databases provides a benchmark for other institutions.
