Yeast ß-glucan (BYG) possesses extremely low solubility that has limited its applications. In this study, we hydrolyzed BYG using snail enzyme to obtain hydrolyzed yeast ß-glucan (HBYG) with desirable water solubility and hypoglycemic activity. On the basis of HBYG, HBYG­chromium(III) complex (HBYG-Cr) was synthesized. The molecular weight of the complex was 4.41 × 104 Da, and the content of trivalent chromium was 8.95 %. The hydroxyl groups of HBYG participated in the coordination and formed the chromium complex. The space conformations of HBYG exhibited remarkable changes after complex formation. HBYG-Cr existed mainly in an amorphous state and presented good dispersibility, and the surface was uneven. The hypoglycemic activity of HBYG-Cr was studied in db/db and C57 mice. The results showed that HBYG-Cr had good hypoglycemic activity. Histopathological studies demonstrated that the liver, kidney, pancreas, and skeletal muscle in the treatment group were significantly improved compared with those in the diabetic model group. The sub-acute toxicity of HBYG-Cr was studied in KM mice and the results indicated that the complex did not cause adverse reactions or toxic side effects. This study broadened the application of yeast ß-glucan and provided an important reference for the development of hypoglycemic functional foods and drugs.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hallux valgus (HV) is the most prevalent deformity affecting the forefoot; however, its genetic etiology remains unclear. In the literature, vitamin D receptor (VDR) genotypes have been reported to be associated with the risk of skeletal malformations accompanied by inflammation. This study aimed to examine the hypothesis that VDR genotypes are associated with the risk of HV. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The VDR rs731236, rs1544410, rs2228570 and rs7975232 genotypes of 150 HV patients and 600 non-HV subjects were determined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) methodology and examined regarding their associations with HV risk. RESULTS: The results showed that none of the genetic frequency distributions of VDR rs731236, rs1544410, rs2228570, or rs7975232 were significant between the HV cases and non-HV controls (p for trend=0.4055, 0.2170, 0.7220, 0.5509, respectively). Additionally, allelic frequency analysis showed that none of the allelic frequencies of VDR rs731236, rs1544410, rs2228570, or rs7975232 were significantly distributed (p=0.2285, 0.1572, 0.9278, and 0.5547, respectively). Furthermore, stratified analysis showed that no correlation was observed between VDR rs731236 and different age groups (either younger or older than 51) or sex (p=0.3953 and p=0.9576). Moreover, no correlation was found between VDR rs731236 genotype and the risk of HV in individuals within subgroups of height, weight, or body mass index (BMI) (p=0.8317, 0.5346, and p=0.8783, respectively). CONCLUSION: VDR rs731236, rs1544410, rs2228570, and rs7975232 may not serve as indicators for a higher risk of HV.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression is a characteristic feature observed across various malignancies, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Nevertheless, the influence of MMP-9 genotype in the context of NPC remains underexplored. This study examined the implications of MMP-9 promoter rs3918242 genotypes on the susceptibility to NPC in Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cohort comprising 208 NPC cases and 416 healthy controls, genotyping of MMP-9 rs3918242 was conducted utilizing polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methodology. RESULTS: Individuals harbouring the variant CT or TT genotype of MMP-9 rs3918242 did not demonstrate a discernible alteration in NPC risk when compared to wild-type CC carriers [odds ratio (OR)=0.83 and 0.79, with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI)=0.56-1.24 and 0.27-2.29; p=0.4205 and 0.8675, respectively]. Moreover, the presence of the variant T allele did not confer a modified risk of NPC (OR=0.84, 95%CI=0.60-1.19, p=0.3761). Intriguingly, a protective effect associated with the MMP-9 rs3918242 CT genotype against NPC risk was discerned among individuals abstaining from betel quid chewing behaviour (OR=0.51, 95%CI=0.30-0.87, p=0.0166). Notably, no significant association was established between the MMP-9 rs3918242 CT or TT genotype and NPC risk among individuals with or without smoking or alcohol consumption habits. CONCLUSION: Presence of the variant CT or TT genotype at MMP-9 rs3918242 did not appear to substantially contribute to an elevated risk of NPC. Notably, a protective effect against NPC risk was observed in individuals carrying the CT genotype, particularly in those abstaining from betel quid chewing.

Network analysis provides an innovative approach to examining symptom-to-symptom interactions in mental health, and adverse external conditions may change the network structures. This study compared the networks of common risk factors and mental health problems (loneliness, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms) in community-dwelling older people before and during COVID-19. Older adults (aged ≥ 60) at risk for depression were recruited through non-governmental organizations. Loneliness, depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms were measured using the three-item Loneliness Scale (UCLA-3), nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), respectively. Data from 2549 (before) and 3506 (during COVID-19) respondents were included using propensity score matching. Being restless (GAD-7-item5) was most central, indicated by Expected Influence, in both pre and during COVID-19 networks despite low severity (mean score). The network during COVID-19 had higher global strength and edge variability than the pre-pandemic network, suggesting easier symptom spread and potentially more complex symptom presentation. In addition, feeling isolated from others (UCLA-3-item3) had stronger connections with feeling worthless/guilty (PHQ-9-item6) and anticipatory anxiety (GAD-7-item7) during COVID-19 than before. These findings may enhance our knowledge of the symptom structure of common mental health problems and the impacts of the pandemic. Targeting central symptoms may offer novel preventive strategies for older people.

Little is known about the effect of surface coatings on the fate and toxicity of CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) to aquatic plants. In this study, we modified nCeO2 with chitosan (Cs) and alginate (Al) to obtain positively charged nCeO2@Cs and negatively charged nCeO2@Al, respectively, and exposed them to a representative aquatic plant, duckweed (Lemna minor L.). Uncoated nCeO2 could significantly inhibit the growth of duckweed, induce oxidative damage and lead to cell death, whereas nCeO2@Cs and nCeO2@Al exhibited lower toxicity to duckweed. ICP-MS analysis revealed that the Ce content in duckweed from the nCeO2 group was 1.74 and 2.85 times higher than that in the nCeO2@Cs and nCeO2@Al groups, respectively. Microscopic observations indicated that the positively charged nCeO2@Cs was more readily adsorbed on the root surface of duckweed than the negatively charged nCeO2@Al. The results of XANES and LCF demonstrated that a certain percentage of Ce(Ⅳ) was reduced to Ce(Ⅲ) after the interaction of the three NPs with duckweed, but the degree of biotransformation differed among the treatments. Specifically, the absolute contents of Ce(III) produced of nCeO2@Cs and nCeO2@Al through biotransformation were reduced by 55.5% and 83.5%, respectively, compared with that of the nCeO2 group, which might be the key factor for the diminished phytotoxicity of the coated nCeO2 to the duckweed. These findings were valuable for understanding the toxicity of metal-based NPs to aquatic plants and for the synthesis of environmentally friendly nanomaterials.

The introduction of single-atom catalysts (SACs) into Fenton-like oxidation promises ultrafast water pollutant elimination, but the limited access to pollutants and oxidant by surface catalytic sites and the intensive oxidant consumption still severely restrict the decontamination performance. While nanoconfinement of SACs allows drastically enhanced decontamination reaction kinetics, the detailed regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we unveil that, apart from local enrichment of reactants, the catalytic pathway shift is also an important cause for the reactivity enhancement of nanoconfined SACs. The surface electronic structure of cobalt site is altered by confining it within the nanopores of mesostructured silica particles, which triggers a fundamental transition from singlet oxygen to electron transfer pathway for 4-chlorophenol oxidation. The changed pathway and accelerated interfacial mass transfer render the nanoconfined system up to 34.7-fold higher pollutant degradation rate and drastically raised peroxymonosulfate utilization efficiency (from 61.8% to 96.6%) relative to the unconfined control. It also demonstrates superior reactivity for the degradation of other electron-rich phenolic compounds, good environment robustness, and high stability for treating real lake water. Our findings deepen the knowledge of nanoconfined catalysis and may inspire innovations in low-carbon water purification technologies and other heterogeneous catalytic applications.

Objective: The objective of this work was to assess the effect of physical therapy in patients with somatosensory tinnitus (ST) and explore the influence of physical therapy on clinical variables obtained before treatment. Methods: A total of 43 patients with ST were randomized to the immediate-start group (n = 20) and delayed-start group (n = 23). All patients received physical therapy for 1 week (seven sessions). Each session lasted 60 min. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), and numerical pain rating scale (NPRS) scores were documented at baseline and after treatment (week 1) for all patients. For subjects in the immediate-start group, the THI, VAS, and NPRS scores were measured after therapy (weeks 6, 9, and 12, respectively). Medical history characteristic functional activity scale (HCFA) scores were measured at baseline to assess the association between somatic symptoms and tinnitus. Results: At week 1, VAS, THI, and NPRS scores of patients in the immediate-start group were improved by 1.25 ± 1.59, 11.10 ± 15.10, and 0.95 ± 1.54 points, respectively, and were significantly higher than those in the delayed-start group (p < 0.05). The change in VAS, THI, and NPRS scores in the treatment group was significantly positively correlated with the scores of the HCFA before treatment (r = 0.786, p < 0.001; r = 0.680, p = 0.001; r = 0.796, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in THI, VAS, and NPRS scores among patients in the immediate-start group between weeks 1, 6, 9, and 12 after treatment (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Although more participants were necessary in the further study, the study implies that physical therapy can reduce physical pain, improve tinnitus symptoms, and quality of life in ST patients without hearing loss, and the short-term curative effect is stable, especially for tinnitus patients with clear somatic symptoms.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP7) have been found to be upregulated in the late stages of endometriosis. However, the contribution of MMP7 genotype to endometriosis has seldom been examined. This study aimed to investigate the role of MMP7 promoter A-181G (rs11568818) and C-153T (rs11568819) genotypes in determining personal susceptibility to endometriosis in a Taiwanese cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this hospital-based case-control study, MMP7 genotypes were analyzed in 153 endometriosis and 636 individuals without endometriosis using typical polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methodology. RESULTS: The statistical analysis revealed that MMP7 rs11568818 genotypes were differentially distributed between the endometriosis and control groups (p for trend=0.0048). Specifically, the MMP7 rs11568818 homozygous variant GG was associated with endometriosis risk compared to the wild-type AA genotype (OR=4.59, 95% CI=1.46-14.48, p=0.0136). However, the MMP7 rs11568818 heterozygous variant AG was not associated with endometriosis risk (OR=1.57, 95% CI=0.97-2.53, p=0.0854). The frequency of than variant allele G of MMP7 rs11568818 was 12.7% in the endometriosis group, significantly higher than the 7.2% observed in the control group (OR=1.90, 95% CI=1.27-2.82, p=0.0021). CONCLUSION: MMP7 rs11568818 GG genotype was found to be a novel marker for endometriosis risk in Taiwanese.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, a group of muscle-related disorders, leads to the gradual decline and weakening of skeletal muscle over time. Recognizing the pivotal role of gastrointestinal conditions in maintaining metabolic homeostasis within skeletal muscle, we hypothesize that the effectiveness of the myogenic programme is influenced by the levels of gastrointestinal hormones in the bloodstream, and this connection is associated with the onset of sarcopenia. METHODS: We first categorized 145 individuals from the Emergency Room of Taipei Veterans General Hospital into sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups, following the criteria established by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. A thorough examination of specific gastrointestinal hormone levels in plasma was conducted to identify the one most closely associated with sarcopenia. Techniques, including immunofluorescence, western blotting, glucose uptake assays, seahorse real-time cell metabolic analysis, flow cytometry analysis, kinesin-1 activity assays and qPCR analysis, were applied to investigate its impacts and mechanisms on myogenic differentiation. RESULTS: Individuals in the sarcopenia group exhibited elevated plasma levels of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) at 1021.5 ± 313.5 pg/mL, in contrast to non-sarcopenic individuals with levels at 351.1 ± 39.0 pg/mL (P < 0.05). Although it is typical for GLP-1 levels to rise post-meal and subsequently drop naturally, detecting higher GLP-1 levels in starving individuals with sarcopenia raised the possibility of GLP-1 influencing myogenic differentiation in skeletal muscle. Further investigation using a cell model revealed that GLP-1 (1, 10 and 100 ng/mL) dose-dependently suppressed the expression of the myogenic marker, impeding myocyte fusion and the formation of polarized myotubes during differentiation. GLP-1 significantly inhibited the activity of the microtubule motor kinesin-1, interfering with the translocation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) to the cell membrane and the dispersion of mitochondria. These impairments subsequently led to a reduction in glucose uptake to 0.81 ± 0.04 fold (P < 0.01) and mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production from 25.24 ± 1.57 pmol/min to 18.83 ± 1.11 pmol/min (P < 0.05). Continuous exposure to GLP-1, even under insulin induction, attenuated the elevated glucose uptake. CONCLUSIONS: The elevated GLP-1 levels observed in individuals with sarcopenia are associated with a reduction in myogenic differentiation. The impact of GLP-1 on both the membrane translocation of GLUT4 and the dispersion of mitochondria significantly hinders glucose uptake and the production of mitochondrial ATP necessary for the myogenic programme. These findings point us towards strategies to establish the muscle-gut axis, particularly in the context of sarcopenia. Additionally, these results present the potential of identifying relevant diagnostic biomarkers.

Creating an animated data video with audio narration is a time-consuming and complex task that requires expertise. It involves designing complex animations, turning written scripts into audio narrations, and synchronizing visual changes with the narrations. This paper presents WonderFlow, an interactive authoring tool, that facilitates narration-centric design of animated data videos. WonderFlow allows authors to easily specify semantic links between text and the corresponding chart elements. Then it automatically generates audio narration by leveraging text-to-speech techniques and aligns the narration with an animation. WonderFlow provides a structure-aware animation library designed to ease chart animation creation, enabling authors to apply pre-designed animation effects to common visualization components. Additionally, authors can preview and refine their data videos within the same system, without having to switch between different creation tools. A series of evaluation results confirmed that WonderFlow is easy to use and simplifies the creation of data videos with narration-animation interplay.

Porokeratosis (PK), characterized by keratotic lesions with an atrophic center and a prominent peripheral ridge, with a typical histological hallmark, namely, the cornoid lamella, has two forms: disseminated and localized. While PK often converts into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), conversion from disseminated superficial porokeratosis (DSP) alone is rarely reported except for one case in which DSP and LP coexisted and converted to SCC. Here, we report the case of a patient with SCC converted from DSP alone, presenting with coin-sized macules on the bottom right of his waist that developed into an ulcer at the center. The patient underwent radiation therapy, which effectively treated the SCC but did not resolve the PK. This article highlights regular follow-up and undergo comprehensive diagnosis, both of which are beneficial to enable early detection and management of DSP that has converted to into SCC; in addition, standardized medical treatment may help improve the treatment therapeutic effect of in similar diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Access to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance and treatments were disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to characterize the impact of the pandemic on HCC incidence and mortality rates, treatment and outcomes in the U.S. METHODS: Two nationwide databases, the United States Cancer Statistics and the National Vital Statistics System, were used to investigate HCC incidence and mortality between 2001-2020. Trends in age-adjusted incidence (aIR) and mortality (aMR) rates were assessed using joinpoint analysis. The 2020 aIR and aMR were projected based on the pre-pandemic data and compared to actual values to assess the extent of underdiagnosis. We assessed differences in HCC characteristics, treatment and overall survival (OS) between 2020 and 2018-2019. RESULTS: The aIR of HCC in 2020 was significantly reduced compared to 2019 (5.22 vs 6.03/100K PY), representing a 12.2% decrease compared to the predicted aIR in 2020 (5.94/100K PY). The greatest extent of underdiagnosis was observed in Black (-14.87%) and Hispanic (-14.51%) individuals and those with localized HCC (-15.12%). Individuals staged as regional or distant HCC were also less likely to receive treatment in 2020. However, there was no significant difference in short-term OS in 2020 compared to 2018-2019, with HCC mortality rates remaining stable (aMR: 2.76 vs 2.73/100K PY in 2020 vs 2019). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in underdiagnosis of HCC, particularly early-stage disease and racial ethnic minorities, and underuse of HCC-directed treatment. Longer follow-up is needed to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HCC-related mortality.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is a common musculoskeletal system disease, which is one of the most important causes of low back pain. Despite the high prevalence of IDD, current treatments are limited to relieving symptoms, and there are no effective therapeutic agents that can block or reverse the progression of IDD. Oxidative stress, the result of an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and clearance by the antioxidant defense system, plays an important role in the progression of IDD. Polyphenols are antioxidant compounds that can inhibit ROS production, which can scavenge free radicals, reduce hydrogen peroxide production, and inhibit lipid oxidation in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells and IDD animal models. In this review, we discussed the antioxidant effects of polyphenols and their regulatory role in different molecular pathways associated with the pathogenesis of IDD, as well as the limitations and future prospects of polyphenols as a potential treatment of IDD.

We conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess the potential prognostic utility of geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) for head and neck cancer (HNC). We selected studies and extracted data after searching the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and PubMed databases. The associations between GNRI and survival outcomes were explored by calculating hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) through a random-effects meta-analysis. We included 11 studies that involved 2887 patients with HNC. The combined HR demonstrated significant associations of low GNRI with unfavorable progression-free survival (HR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.32-2.65, p < 0.001) and overall survival (HR = 3.04, 95% CI = 2.30-4.03, p < 0.001). The association between the GNRI and overall survival persisted across various subgroups. The GNRI could serve as a valuable prognostic biomarker for patients with HNC. Low GNRI scores are significantly associated with unfavorable survival outcomes.

Our current study aimed to investigate the role and mechanism of circVIRMA in cervical cancer (CC) progression. CircVIRMA, microRNA-452-5p (miR-452-5p) and CREB3 regulatory factor (CREBRF) mRNA levels were examined in CC via quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The protein level of CREBRF in CC was checked by Western blot. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) staining, cell cycle, flow cytometry and transwell assays were conducted to estimate the effects of circVIRMA on malignant phenotypes of CC tumors. Western blot was used to measure related marker protein levels. The interaction between miR-452-5p and circVIRMA or CREBRF was predicted by bioinformatics analysis and verified by dual-luciferase reporter and RNA Immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays. Xenograft assay was used to assess the effect of circVIRMA on tumor growth in vivo. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay was performed to detect Ki-67 expression in tissues of mice. CircVIRMA and CREBRF levels were upregulated, while miR-452-5p was downregulated in CC tissues and cells. CircVIRMA silencing restrained CC cell proliferation, migration and invasion whereas induced apoptosis in vitro. In addition circVIRMA knockdown markedly attenuated xenograft tumor growth in vivo. circVIRMA was an efficient molecular sponge for miR-452-5p, and negatively regulated miR-452-5p expression. circVIRMA regulated CREBRF expression to modulate CC progression via miR-452-5p. MiR-452-5p downregulation reversed the effects of circVIRMA knockdown on CC progression. MiR-452-5p directly targeted CREBRF, and CREBRF overexpression partly restored the impact of miR-452-5p mimics on CC progression. circVIRMA mediated CC progression via regulating miR-452-5p/CREBRF axis, providing a novel therapeutic target for CC treatment.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of visceral pleural invasion (VPI) in lung adenocarcinoma before operation can provide guidance and help for surgical operation and postoperative treatment. We investigate the value of intratumoral and peritumoral radiomics nomograms for preoperatively predicting the status of VPI in patients diagnosed with clinical stage IA lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS: A total of 404 patients from our hospital were randomly assigned to a training set (n = 283) and an internal validation set (n = 121) using a 7:3 ratio, while 81 patients from two other hospitals constituted the external validation set. We extracted 1218 CT-based radiomics features from the gross tumor volume (GTV) as well as the gross peritumoral tumor volume (GPTV5, 10, 15), respectively, and constructed radiomic models. Additionally, we developed a nomogram based on relevant CT features and the radscore derived from the optimal radiomics model. RESULTS: The GPTV10 radiomics model exhibited superior predictive performance compared to GTV, GPTV5, and GPTV15, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.855, 0.842, and 0.842 in the three respective sets. In the clinical model, the solid component size, pleural indentation, solid attachment, and vascular convergence sign were identified as independent risk factors among the CT features. The predictive performance of the nomogram, which incorporated relevant CT features and the GPTV10-radscore, outperformed both the radiomics model and clinical model alone, with AUC values of 0.894, 0.828, and 0.876 in the three respective sets. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram, integrating radiomics features and CT morphological features, exhibits good performance in predicting VPI status in lung adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Proteome microarrays are one of the popular high-throughput screening methods for large-scale investigation of protein interactions in cells. These interactions can be measured on protein chips when coupled with fluorescence-labeled probes, helping indicate potential biomarkers or discover drugs. Several computational tools were developed to help analyze the protein chip results. However, existing tools fail to provide a user-friendly interface for biologists and present only one or two data analysis methods suitable for limited experimental designs, restricting the use cases. METHODS: In order to facilitate the biomarker examination using protein chips, we implemented a user-friendly and comprehensive web tool called BAPCP (Biomarker Analysis tool for Protein Chip Platforms) in this research to deal with diverse chip data distributions. RESULTS: BAPCP is well integrated with standard chip result files and includes 7 data normalization methods and 7 custom-designed quality control/differential analysis filters for biomarker extraction among experiment groups. Moreover, it can handle cost-efficient chip designs that repeat several blocks/samples within one single slide. Using experiments of the human coronavirus (HCoV) protein microarray and the E. coli proteome chip that helps study the immune response of Kawasaki disease as examples, we demonstrated that BAPCP can accelerate the time-consuming week-long manual biomarker identification process to merely 3 min. CONCLUSIONS: The developed BAPCP tool provides substantial analysis support for protein interaction studies and conforms to the necessity of expanding computer usage and exchanging information in bioscience and medicine. Economically and efficiently removing organic pollutants from water is still a challenge in wastewater treatment. Utilizing environmentally friendly and readily available protein-based natural polymers to develop aerogels with effective removal performance and sustainable regeneration capability is a promising strategy for adsorbent design. Here, a robust and cost-effective method using inexpensive ß-lactoglobulin (BLG) as raw material was proposed to fabricate BLG-based aerogels. Firstly, photocurable BLG-based polymers were synthesized by grafting glycidyl methacrylate. Then, a cross-linking reaction, including photo-crosslinking and salting-out treatment, was applied to prepared BLG-based hydrogels. Finally, the BLG-based aerogels with high porosity and ultralight weight were obtained after freeze-drying. The outcomes revealed that the biocompatible BLG-based aerogels exhibited effective removal performance for a variety of organic pollutants under perfectly quiescent conditions, and could be regenerated and reused many times via a simple and rapid process of acid washing and centrifugation. Overall, this work not only demonstrates that BLG-based aerogels are promising adsorbents for water purification but also provides a potential way for the sustainable utilization of BLG.

Depressive symptoms and aggression frequently occur together, and this co-occurrence may result in more severe developmental problems. However, it is unclear if there are distinct patterns of co-occurrence. This study investigated the co-occurrence patterns of depressive symptoms and aggression, and examined their stability and demographic characteristics. A total of 1010 Chinese adolescents (50.6% girls; mean age at T1 = 12.54 years, SD = 0.42) participated in annual surveys over three years (2019-2021). Three different patterns of co-occurrence were found except for the normal group: depression-dominant co-occurrence (13.6%), aggression-dominant co-occurrence (3.2%), and moderate co-occurrence (6.0%) (T1). In these co-occurrence patterns, adolescents classified as aggression-dominant co-occurrence exhibited the most instability and frequent changes, while adolescents classified as depression-dominant co-occurrence exhibited the most stability. Boys or younger adolescents were more likely to exhibit the aggression-dominant co-occurrence, while girls or older adolescents were more likely to exhibit the depression-dominant co-occurrence. The findings indicate that the co-occurrence patterns observed are distinct and are dominated by aggression or depression, which implies the need for targeted intervention practices.
