In engineered photonic lattices, topological photonic (TP) modes present a promising avenue for designing waveguides with suppressed backscattering. However, the integration of the TP modes in electromagnetic systems has faced longstanding challenges. The primary obstacle is the insufficient development of high-efficiency coupling technologies between the TP modes and the conventional transmission modes. This dilemma leads to significant scattering at waveguide terminals when attempting to connect the TP waveguides with other waveguides. In this study, a topological photonic substrate-integrated waveguide (TPSIW) is proposed that can seamlessly integrate into traditional microstrip line systems. It successfully addresses the matching problem and demonstrates efficient coupling of both even and odd TP modes with the quasi-transverse electromagnetic modes of microstrip lines, resulting in minimal energy losses. In addition, topological leaky states are introduced through designed slots on the TPSIW top surface. These slots enable the creation of TP leaky-wave antennas with beam steering capabilities. A wireless link based on TPSIWs are further established that enables the transmission of distinct signals toward different directions. This work is an important step toward the integration of TP modes in microwave systems, unlocking the possibilities for the development of high-performance wireless devices.

OBJECTIVE: Apoptosis and autophagy are significant factors of sepsis induced myocardial injury (SIMI). XBJ improves SIMI by PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. Present study is devised to explore the protective mechanism of XBJ in continuous treatment of SIMI caused by CLP. METHODS: Rat survival was first recorded within 7 days. Rats were randomly assigned to three groups: Sham group, CLP group, and XBJ group. The animals in each group were divided into 12 h group, 1 d, 2 d, 3 d and 5 d according to the administration time of 12 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days or 5 days, respectively. Echocardiography, myocardial injury markers and H&E staining were used to detect cardiac function and injury. IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α in serum were measured using ELISA kits. Cardiomyocyte apoptosis was assayed by TUNEL staining. Apoptosis and autophagy related proteins regulated by the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway were tested using western blot. RESULTS: XBJ increased the survival rate in CLP-induced septic Rat. First of all, the results of echocardiography, H&E staining and myocardial injury markers (cTnI, CK, and LDH levels) showed that XBJ could effectively improve the myocardial injury caused by CLP with the increase of treatment time. Moreover, XBJ significantly decreased the levels of serum inflammatory cytokines IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α in SIMI rats. Meanwhile, XBJ downregulated the expression of apoptosis-related proteins Bax, Cleaved-Caspase 3, Cleaved-Caspase 9, Cytochrome C and Cleaved-PARP, while upregulated the protein levels of Bcl-2 in SIMI rats. And, XBJ upregulated the expression of autophagy related protein Beclin-1 and LC3-II/LC3-I ratio in SIMI rats, whereas downregulated the expression of P62. Finally, XBJ administration downregulated the phosphorylation levels of proteins PI3K, AKT and mTOR in SIMI rats. CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that XBJ has a good protective effect on SIMI after continuous treatment, and it was speculated that it might be through inhibiting apoptosis and promoting autophagy via, at least partially, activating PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in the early stage of sepsis, as well as promoting apoptosis and inhibiting autophagy via suppressing PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in the late stage of sepsis.

Unlike conventional topological materials that carry topological states at their boundaries, higher-order topological materials are able to support topological states at boundaries of boundaries, such as corners and hinges. While band topology has been recently extended into thermal diffusion for thermal metamaterials, its realization is limited to a 1D thermal lattice, lacking access to the higher-order topology. In this work, the experimental realization is reported of a higher-order thermal topological insulator in a generalized 2D diffusion lattice. The topological corner states for thermal diffusion are observed in the bandgap of diffusion rate of the bulk, as a consequence of the anti-Hermitian nature of the diffusion Hamiltonian. The topological protection of these thermal corner states is demonstrated with the stability of their diffusion profile in the presence of amorphous deformation. This work constitutes the first realization of higher-order topology in purely diffusive systems and opens the door for future thermal management with topological protection beyond 1D geometries.

The plant microbiome profoundly affects many aspects of host performance; however, the ecological processes by which plant hosts govern microbiome assembly, function, and dispersal remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the bacterial and fungal communities in multiple compartment niches (bulk soil, rhizosphere soil, root endosphere, phylloplane, and leaf endosphere) of Casuarina equisetifolia L. at three developmental stages in Hainan Province, China. We found that microbiome assemblages along the soil-plant continuum were shaped by the compartment niches. Bacterial diversity and richness decreased from the soils to roots to leaves, with the highest network complexity found in the roots and the lowest found in the phylloplane. However, fungal diversity gradually increased from the soils to roots to phyllosphere, whereas fungal richness decreased from the soils to roots but increased from the roots to phyllosphere; the greatest network complexity was found in bulk soils and the lowest was found in the roots. Different biomarker taxa occurred in the different ecological niches. Bacterial and fungal communities exhibited distinct ecological functions; the former played important roles in maintaining plant growth and providing nutrients, whereas the latter predominantly decomposed organic matter. The bacterial community of C. equisetifolia mostly originated from bulk soil, whereas the fungal community was mainly derived from rhizosphere soil and air. Leaf endophytes were positively correlated with organic carbon, and root and soil microorganisms were positively correlated with total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium. Our findings provide empirical evidence for plant-microbiome interactions and contribute to future research on non-crop management and the manipulation of non-crop microbiomes.

Productivity decline of Casuarina equisetifolia plantation and difficulty in natural regeneration remains a serious problem because of allelopathy. Previous studies have confirmed that 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) are the major allelochemicals of the C. equisetifolia litter exudates. The production of these allelochemicals may derive from decomposition of litter or from the litter endophyte and microorganisms adhering to litter surfaces. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the correlation between allelochemicals in litter and endophytic and epiphytic fungi and bacteria from litter. A total of 100 fungi and 116 bacteria were isolated from the interior and surface of litter of different forest ages (young, half-mature, and mature plantation). Results showed that the fermentation broth of fungal genera Mycosphaerella sp. and Pestalotiopsis sp., and bacterial genera Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Burkholderia-Paraburkholderia, and Pantoea ananatis had the strongest allelopathic effect on C. equisetifolia seeds. Allelochemicals, such as 2,4-DTBP and its analogs were identified in the fermentation broths of these microorganisms using GC/MS analysis. These results indicate that endophytic and epiphytic fungi and bacteria in litters are involved in the synthesis of allelochemicals of C. equisetifolia. To further determine the abundance of the allelopathic fungi and bacteria, Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing was performed. The results showed that bacterial genera with strong allelopathic potential were mainly distributed in the young and half-mature plantation with low abundance, while the abundance of fungal genera Mycosphaerella sp. and Pestalotiopsis sp. were higher in the young and mature plantations. In particular, the abundance of Mycosphaerella sp. in the young and mature plantations were 501.20% and 192.63% higher than in the half-mature plantation, respectively. Overall, our study demonstrates that the litter fungi with higher abundance in the young and mature plantation were involved in the synthesis of the allelochemical 2,4-DTBP of C. equisetifolia. This finding may be important for understanding the relationship between autotoxicity and microorganism and clarifying the natural regeneration problem of C. equisetifolia.

Rhizosphere bacterial diversity and community structure are important factors involving in plant growth. However, the exact process of how plant rhizosphere bacterial community structures is assembled remains unclear. To investigate the role of bacterial chemotaxis to rhizosphere secretions in the establishment of rhizosphere microbial community in Casuarina equisetifolia, we screened bacteria strains derived from the rhizosphere of Casuarina equisetifolia L. using top three chemicals of the plant root exudates (2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, methyl stearate, and arginine) as chemoattractant. Among 72 bacterial strains, five showed strong chemotaxis to 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, six to methyl stearate, and eleven to arginine, with the highest bacterial chemotaxis occurring at a concentration of 60 µM. This indicates that arginine is a more important chemoattractant than 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, methyl stearate in the establishment of rhizosphere microbial community in Casuarina equisetifolia. Bacterial community assembly analysis using different chemoattractants and chemoattractants-plus-bacteria combinations were then performed by burying laboratory prepared bags of sterlized soil into C. equisetifolia forest. Bacteria diversity and enrichment analyses using 16S rDNA sequencing at 7 and 14 days after burying showed that arginine-plus-Ochrobactrum sp. and Pantoea sp. treatment exhibited the greatest similarity to the natural forest bacterial community. Our date provides new insights into how chemoattractants and chemotactic bacteria strains shape the rhizosphere microbial community of C. equisetifolia, which constitutes foundational information for future management of these communities.

Anoectochilus roxburghii (Wall.) Lindl has been used in Chinese herbal medicine for treating various ailments. However, its wild resources are endangered, and artificial cultivation of the plant is limited by the low regeneration rate of conventional propagation methods. The lack of A. roxburghii resources is detrimental to the commercial production of the plant and kinsenoside, which is unique to Anoectochilus species. To develop highly efficient methods for A. roxburghii micropropagation and find alternative resources for kinsenoside production, we created an induction, proliferation, and regeneration of PLBs (IPR-PLB) protocol for A. roxburghii. We also analyzed the kinsenoside and flavonoid contents during the induction and proliferation of PLBs. The best media of IPR-PLB for PLB induction and proliferation (secondary PLB induction and proliferation), shoot formation, and rooting medium were Murashige and Skoog (MS) + 3 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) + 0.5 mg/L naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) + 0.8 mg/L zeatin (ZT) + 0.2 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D), MS + 3 mg/L 6-BA + 0.5 mg/L NAA, and MS + 0.5 mg/L NAA, respectively. On these optimized media, the PLB induction rate was 89 ± 2.08%, secondary PLB induction rate was 120 ± 5%, secondary PLB proliferation rate was 400 ± 10% and 350 ± 10 % in terms of the quantity and biomass at approximately 1 month, shoot induction rate was 10.5 shoots/PLB mass, and root induction rate was 98%. All plantlets survived after acclimation. Darkness or weak light were essential for PLB proliferation, and light was crucial for PLB differentiation on these optimized media. The kinsenoside contents of PLBs and secondary PLBs were 10.38 ± 0.08 and 12.30 ± 0.08 mg/g fresh weight (FW), respectively. Moreover, the peak kinsenoside content during the proliferation of secondary PLBs was 34.27 ± 0.79 mg/g FW, which was slightly lower than that of the whole plant (38.68 ± 3.12 mg/g FW). Two flavonoids exhibited tissue- or temporal-specific accumulation patterns, and astragalin accumulated exclusively during the first 2 weeks of cultivation. The IPR-PLB protocol for A. roxburghii may facilitate the efficient micropropagation of A. roxburghii plants. Furthermore, the PLBs are a good alternative resource for kinsenoside production.

Photonics can be confined in real space with dispersion vanishing in the momentum space due to destructive interference. In this Letter, we report the experimental realization of flat bands with nontrivial topology in a self-complementary plasmonic metasurface. The band diagram and compact localized states are measured. In these nontrivial band gaps, we observe the topological edge states by near-field measurements. Furthermore, we propose a digitalized metasurface by loading controllable diodes with C_{3} symmetry in every unit cell. By pumping a digital signal into the metasurface, we investigate the interaction between incident waves and the dynamic metasurface. Experimental results indicate that compact localized states in the nontrivial flat band could enhance the wave-matter interactions to convert more incident waves to time-modulated harmonic photonics. Although our experiments are conducted in the microwave regime, extending the related concepts into the optical plasmonic systems is feasible. Our findings pave an avenue toward planar integrated photonic devices with nontrivial flat bands and exotic transmission phenomena.

BACKGROUND: The cardioprotective ability of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) is controversial. Most studies suggest a specific role for PUFAs in cardioprotection from ischemic heart disease (IHD). However, few studies have used genetic biomarkers of n-3 PUFAs to examine their potential relationships with IHD. This study aimed to use Mendelian randomization to evaluate whether genetically-predicted n-3 PUFAs affect IHD and cardiometabolic risk factors (CRFs). METHODS: Genetic variants strongly (p < 5 × 10-8) and independently (r2 > 0.1) associated with n-3 PUFAs were derived from the CHARGE Consortium (including 8,866 subjects of European ancestry) and were used as instrumental variables (IVs) for evaluating the effect of n-3 PUFAs, including α-linolenic acid (ALA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Data on the associations between the IVs and IHD, myocardial infarction, and CRFs (including diabetes, lipids, blood pressure, body mass index, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)) were obtained from the UK Biobank SOFT CAD GWAS with the CARDIoGRAMplusC4D 1000 Genomes-based GWAS (113,937 IHD cases and 339,115 controls), the Myocardial Infarction Genetics and CARDIoGRAM Exome consortia (42,335 MI cases and 78,240 controls), the DIAbetes Genetics Replication And Meta-analysis consortium (26,676 diabetes mellitus cases and 132,532 controls), the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium (n = 196,475), the International Consortium for Blood Pressure (n = 69,395), and the meta-analysis of GWAS for body fat distribution in the UK Biobank and Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (n = 694,649). RESULTS: Genetically-predicted higher ALA was associated with lower risk of IHD, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and lower serum lipids. The effect size per 0.05-unit increase (about 1 standard deviation) in plasma ALA level) was - 1.173 (95% confidence interval - 2.214 to - 0.133) for IHD. DPA and EPA had no association with IHD but were associated with a higher risk of T2D, higher levels of lipids or WHR. DHA had no association with IHD or CRFs. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests a benefit of ALA for IHD and its main risk factors. DHA, DPA, and EPA had no association with IHD but were partly associated with increasing cardiometabolic risk factors.

Shanlan upland rice, a kind of unique rice germplasm in Hainan Island, was used to evaluate genetic diversity and association between SSR markers and agronomic traits. A total of 239 alleles were detected in 57 Hainan upland rice varieties using 35 SSR markers, and the number of alleles per locus was 2-19. The observed heterozygosity was 0.0655-0.3115. The Shannon diversity index was 0.1352-0.4827. The genetic similarity coefficient was 0.6736-0.9707, and 46 varieties were clustered into one group, indicating that the genetic base of the Shanlan upland rice germplasm was narrow. A total of 25 SSR markers significantly related to plant height, effective panicle number per plant, panicle length, total grain number, filled grain number, seed rating rate, and 1000-grain weight were obtained (P < 0.01), with the percentage of the total variations explained ranging from 0.12% to 42.62%. RM208 explained 42.62% of the total variations in plant height of Shanlan upland rice. RM493 was significantly associated with 6 agronomic traits. We can speculate that RM208 may flank QTLs responsible for plant height and RM493 may flank QTLs playing a fundamental role in the intertwined regulatory network of agronomic traits of Shanlan upland rice.

BACKGROUND: Both DNA genotype and methylation of antisense non-coding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) have been robustly associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), but the interdependent mechanisms of genotype and methylation remain unclear. METHODS: Eighteen tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ANRIL were genotyped in a matched case-control study (cases 503 and controls 503). DNA methylation of ANRIL and the INK4/ARF locus (p14ARF, p15INK4b and p16INK4a) was measured using pyrosequencing in the same set of samples (cases 100 and controls 100). RESULTS: Polymorphisms of ANRIL (rs1004638, rs1333048 and rs1333050) were significantly associated with CAD (p < 0.05). The incidence of CAD, multi-vessel disease, and modified Gensini scores demonstrated a strong, direct association with ANRIL gene dosage (p < 0.05). There was no significant association between ANRIL polymorphisms and myocardial infarction/acute coronary syndrome (MI/ACS) (p > 0.05). Methylation levels of ANRIL were similar between the two studied groups (p > 0.05), but were different in the rs1004638 genotype, with AA and AT genotype having a higher level of ANRIL methylation (pos4, p = 0.006; pos8, p = 0.019). Further Spearman analyses indicated that methylation levels of ANRIL were positively associated with systolic blood pressure (pos6, r = 0.248, p = 0.013), diastolic blood pressure (pos3, r = 0.213, p = 0.034; pos6, r = 0.220, p = 0.028), and triglyceride (pos4, r = 0.253, p = 0.013), and negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (pos2, r = - 0.243, p = 0.017). Additionally, we identified 12 transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) within the methylated ANRIL region, and functional annotation indicated these TFBS were associated with basal transcription. Methylation at the INK4/ARF locus was not associated with ANRIL genotype. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that ANRIL genotype (tag SNPs rs1004638, rs1333048 and rs1333050) mainly affects coronary atherosclerosis, but not MI/ACS. There may be allele-related DNA methylation and allele-related binding of transcription factors within the ANRIL promoter.

Ammonia is an important environmental pollutant and can induce serious damages to the organs of aquatic animals, especially the intestine which is mostly exposed to external environment. As important species of aquatic ecosystems, turtles may be potential risk targets of ammonia. However, it is not clear whether ammonia shows toxic effects on the intestines of turtles. Therefore, the worldwide species red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) was selected, to investigate the effects of ammonia on intestinal health and the composition of microbiota. Results showed that ammonia significantly changed the structure of intestines by decreasing the thickness of intestinal wall, shortening the length of intestinal villus, extending lamina proprias, and inducing inflammatory cells appearance when the turtles were exposed to ammonia (1.418 mg NH3 L-1) for 30 d. In addition, the downregulation of epithelial tight junction genes indicated that ammonia increased selective paracellular permeability. Simultaneously, the upregulation of cytokines suggested that ammonia induced intestinal immune and inflammatory responses. Furthermore, ammonia altered the dominant bacterial composition, and decreased the abundance of beneficial intestinal bacteria in the host. Our results demonstrated that ammonia impaired the intestinal health and changed the composition of residential microbiota in T. s. elegans. This study provides a new insight to evaluate the toxic effects of ammonia on aquatic turtles and helps to build a framework for the effective conservation of turtles.

In this study, we present the preparation of a new reverse-phase/phenylboronic-acid (RP/PBA)-type mixed-mode magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for use in the cleanup of amatoxin- and phallotoxin-containing samples intended for ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis. Further, the RP/PBA magnetic microspheres have phenyl and phenylboronic acid groups on their surfaces that selectively adsorb amatoxins and phallotoxins through hydrophobic, π-π, and boronate affinity, significantly reducing matrix effects in UPLC-MS/MS analysis. After systematic optimization, all the standard calibration curves expressed satisfactory linearity (r > 0.9930), limits of detection (0.3 µg/kg), and recovery (97.6%-114.2%). Compared with other reported methods, this method also has the advantages of simple, fast, and efficient operation using relatively small amounts of the MSPE adsorbent. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied in a poisoning incident caused by Lepiota brunneoincarnata Chodat & C. Martín ingestion.

We reported an analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (A-EIT) featured by double transparent peaks in the spectrum. The A-EIT is realized by double-layered metasurface which consists of spoof localized surface plasmons (S-LSP) and cut-wire (CW)-square rings (SR) hybrid. Electric and magnetic S-LSP are excited as bright and dark modes respectively then couple with resonant modes of CW and SR simultaneously to achieve multiple A-EIT. Two bright modes of the electric S-LSP and SR are excited by external electric field directly that produce a bright-bright mode A-EIT. Moreover, the magnetic S-LSP, which cannot be excited by external field directly, is excited through near field coupling from CW, inducing another bright-dark mode A-EIT. Theoretical analysis with corresponding experiment in microwave band are introduced for better insights into physical essence of the double-peaks A-EIT.

Radiation loss of a typical spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) transmission line (TL) is investigated in this paper. A 325 mm-long SSPPs TL is designed and fabricated. Simulated results show that radiation loss contributes more to transmission loss than dielectric loss and conductor loss from 2 GHz to 10 GHz. Radiation loss of the SSPPs TL could be divided into two parts, one is caused by the input mode converter, and the other is caused by the corrugated metallic strip. This paper explains mechanisms of radiation loss from different parts, designs a loaded SSPPs TL with a series of resistors to absorb electromagnetic energy on corrugated metallic strip, and then discriminates radiation loss from the input mode converter, proposes the concept of average radiation length (ARL) to evaluate radiation loss from SSPPs of finite length, and concludes that radiation loss is mainly caused by corrugated structure of finite length at low frequency band and by the input mode converter at high frequency band. To suppress radiation loss, a mixed slow wave TL based on the combination of coplanar waveguides (CPWs) and SSPPs is presented. The designed structure, sample fabrication and experimental verification are discussed.

PURPOSE: To explore the effect of key contact point management in health education at ICU for oral and maxillofacial cancer patients. METHODS: Key contact point checklist was constructed by literature review, brain storm, patients review and expert consultation. The patients in the control group accepted routine health education, while patients in the experimental group accepted health education based on key contact point theory. The data were analyzed by nonparametric rank sum test using SPSS 17.0 software package. RESULTS: The key contact point checklist for oral and maxillofacial cancer patients consisted of 11 items. After intervention, the understanding rate and the satisfaction rate of patients in the experimental group were improved significantly than those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Health education model based on key contact point theory can effectively improve the quality of health education and patients' satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the infection status of Anisakis simplex larvae in marine fishes for sale in Shantou. METHODS: Marine fishes were randomly collected from markets in Shantou City from February to December 2013, and then classified. The viscera and muscle of each fish were carefully dissected and thoroughly examined for anisakids. The larvae were examined under a light microscope. The infection rate and intensity of Anisakis simplex larvae were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 382 fish specimens belonging to 52 species were examined. 42 out of 52 species (80.8%) were found infected by A. simplex larvae. The overall infection rate reached 47.4% (181/382), and average 5.5 larvae parasitized per infected fish (995/181). The survival rate of larvae was 100%. The highest infection rate observed was 100% in Scomber australasicus (4/4), Trachurus japonicus (9/9), Decapterus maruadsi (8/8), Lutjanus lutjanus (9/9), Argyrosomus argentatus (4/4), Nibea albiflora (4/4), Nemipterus bathybius (12/12), Trachinocephalus myops (7/7) and Mene maculata (9/9), followed by 16/18 in Pneumatophorus japonicus, 6/7 in Lutjanus ophuysenii and 5/6 in Lutjanus fulvus. A. simplex larvae were not detected in 10 fish species, namely, Megalaspis cordyla, Lutjanus argentimaculatus, Lutjanus fulviflamma, Acanthopagrus australis, Acanthopagrus latus, Plectorhinchus nigrus, Dentex tumifrons, Psenopsis anomala, Scatophagus argus, and Seriola lalandi. The infection intensity was the highest in Lutjanus fulvus (21.0 per fish), followed by Trachinocephalus myops (16.7 per fish), Saurida filamentosa (14.0 per fish) and Mene maculate (10.1 per fish). The lowest infection intensity was found in Rastrelliger kanagurta, Kaiwarinus equula, Atule mate, Lutjanus russellii, Plectorhinchus cinctus, Priacanthus tayenus, Branchiostegus argentatus, Branchiostegus albus, Sphyraena pinguis, Formio niger, Trachinotus blochii, Siganus fuscescens and Choerodon azurio (less than 2 per fish). The highest infection rate (34.3%, 131/382) was found in the mesentery. The infection intensity was highest in pyloric appendage (3.5 per fish). A. simplex larvae were not found in muscle. The highest infection rate (60.2%, 74/123) was found in fishes with body weight of 100-200 g. The infection intensity was highest in fish with body weight of 301-400 g (7.8 per fish). CONCLUSION: The infection rate of A. simplex larvae is high in marine fishes from Shantou markets.

BACKGROUND: As a result of the large variation in geographic, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics in different regions of China, the prevalence and treatment of hypertension in different regions differ widely. However, little is known about the recent trends of hypertension in Guangdong Province in southern China. We assessed the trends in prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in Guangdong Province between 2004 and 2007. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Guangdong Provincial Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance, modeled on the national Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance, was conducted every 3 years beginning in 2004 with a representative sample of Guangdong Province residents ≥18 years of age. Data from the Guangdong Provincial Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance I (2004; n=7633) and II (2007; n=6447) were used to describe the trends in the prevalence of hypertension among Guangdong Province adults. Hypertension outcomes were examined with interview and examination data. From 2004 to 2007, the age-standardized prevalence rate of hypertension in Guangdong Province residents increased from 12.2% to 15.4% (P<0.001), with the largest increases among rural women (from 9.3% to 19.1%; P<0.001). Among hypertensive people, there was no improvement in awareness and treatment between 2004 and 2007; the control rates decreased from 7.1% in 2004 to 4.5% in 2007 (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: One in 7 Guangdong Province adults is hypertensive, but only one quarter are aware of the condition. About 22% of hypertensive patients receive treatment, and few have their hypertension effectively controlled. Hypertension has become a major public health problem in southern China. Comprehensive public health measures need to be taken to decrease the incidence of hypertension and to prevent the progression of hypertension to cardiovascular disease.

The mechanisms underlying the neurotoxicology of endemic fluorosis still remain obscure. To explore lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage, intracellular Ca²âº concentration ([Ca²âº]i ) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by fluoride, human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells were incubated with sodium fluoride (NaF, 20, 40, 80 mg/L) for 24 h, with 40 mg/L NaF for 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 h, and N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), ethyleneglycol-bis-(ß-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), 1,2-bis(O-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid tetra(acetoxymethyl) ester (BAPTA-AM) alone or combined with fluoride (40 mg/L) respectively for 12 h in vitro. The results showed that the LDH levels in the 40 and 80 mg/L fluoride-treated groups were significantly higher than that of the control group (in the test level of 0.05, the difference were statistical significance). [Ca²âº]i and ROS reached a peak at 3 h and 12 h respectively after exposure to 40 mg/L fluoride. Fluoride coincubated with NAC (antioxidant) dramatically decreased ROS and LDH levels compared with the fluoride only group (in the test level of 0.05, the difference were statistical significance). However, fluoride-induced increase in [Ca²âº]i was not affected by NAC. BAPTA-AM (intracellular calcium chelator) markedly lowered fluoride-induced increase of [Ca²âº]i , ROS and LDH levels while EGTA (extracellular calcium chelator) have no effects on them. These results indicate that fluoride-related Ca²âº release from the site of intracellular calcium storage causes the elevation of ROS contributing to the cytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells.

To investigate the effects of sodium fluoride (NaF) on apoptosis, c-Fos mRNA and protein expression levels, and methylation status as well as Dnmt1, Dnmt3a, and Dnmt3b mRNA expression levels in human embryo hepatocyte (L-02) which were exposed to different concentrations of NaF (0, 20, 40, and 80 mg/l) for 24 h in vitro. Results showed that the percentage of apoptosis and c-Fos mRNA and protein expression levels in 40 and 80 mg/l NaF-treated groups were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). Further, Dnmt1 mRNA expression level was significantly decreased in the 80 mg/l NaF-treated groups compared to the control group (P<0.05); Dnmt3a and Dnmt3b mRNA expression levels were significantly decreased in 40 and 80 mg/l NaF-treated groups compared to the control group (P<0.05). c-Fos methylation levels, according to the bisulfite sequencing results, were decreased in 20, 40, and 80 mg/l NaF-treated groups against the control group. These results suggest that NaF could induce apoptosis and upregulate mRNA and protein expression level of c-Fos as well as decrease mRNA expression levels of Dnmt1, Dnmt3a, and Dnmt3b in L-02 cells. The decrease in c-Fos methylation levels might be involved in the early phase of apoptosis induced by NaF in L-02 cells.
