RESUMEN

The paper aims to investigate the fuel and system options for a floating power plant (FPP) considering economic performance and the decarbonization goals of the International Maritime Organization. Various case studies have been assessed using a reference FPP, encompassing the instant and future retrofitting scenarios. The ready-to-use scenarios involve alternative fuel and organic Rankine cycle-based waste heat recovery system usage. Nuclear energy systems have been evaluated within the reference FPP since they are suitable candidates for achieving zero-carbon objectives and providing low-cost electricity. A simulation framework created in Python has calculated the fuel consumption regarding the power requirement and organized the approaches used in the study. An environmental model comparing the systems has been built to calculate upstream and operational emissions. The cost projection model for 2030 and 2050 has assessed the economic performance. Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity (TOPSIS) one of the multi-criteria decision-making approaches has ranked the systems considering the outcomes of economic and environmental models over the years. Findings demonstrate that the current fuel usage scenario of the FPP is not suitable both environmentally and economically. The other emissions can be near zero and greenhouse gases can be decreased by up to 15.95% using alternative fuels. Nuclear energy is a strong candidate to meet the 2050 targets, but its viability is largely based on economic performance.

Alternative fuels especially those produced in a green way are essential for meeting supplying the world's growing energy needs. Biodiesel is becoming more prominent to meet international maritime organization regulations, minimize reliance on fossil fuels, and lessen the rising harmful emissions in the maritime sector. Four different generations have been investigated in the production stage in which a wide range of fuel types have existed including biodiesel, bioethanol, and renewable diesel. To investigate all facets of biodiesel usage as a marine fuel, the SWOT-AHP method is utilized in this paper in which 16 maritime experts with an average of 10.5 years of experience participated. SWOT factors and sub-factors have been developed in light of the literature review focused on biomass and alternative fuels. The AHP method is utilized for data acquisition from specified factors and sub-factors according to their superiority to each other. The analysis demonstrates the main factors 'PW and sub-factors' IPW values, and CR values to calculate the local and global rank of factors. Results highlighted that "Opportunity" has the highest prominence among the main factors; however, "Threats" remain at the lowest level. Moreover, "Tax privilege on green and alternative fuels supported by the authorities" (O4) is the one with the highest weight compared to the other sub-factors. Noteworthy energy consumption will be fulfilled in the maritime industry in addition to the development of new-generation biodiesel and other alternative fuels. This paper will be a quite valuable resource for experts, academics, and industry stakeholders to lessen the ambiguity around biodiesel.

PURPOSE: Wnt signaling is an important pathway in kidney development and disease. We aimed to establish the levels of ß-catenin expression in CD4+ T cells before and after renal transplantation and to associate it with the form of transplant type, rejection, and graft dysfunction. METHODS: CD4+ T cells were isolated from patients before and after kidney transplantation and their purity was confirmed by flow cytometer. RNA isolation and cDNA synthesis were carried out from these cells. The expression changes of the ß-catenin were investigated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Changes in the ß-catenin protein levels were determined by the western blot analysis. RESULTS: The increasing expression levels of ß-catenin were detected in 60.8% of the patients 6 months after transplantation when compared to patients before transplantation result. 12 of these 14 patients had no graft rejection. It was observed that 11 of 14 patients with increased ß-catenin expression had not graft dysfunction after the transplantation. CONCLUSION: According to our results, the increased levels of ß-catenin expression after transplantation may have a protective function for kidney survival. To understand this protective mechanism, further analysis of this signaling pathway is necessary.

Pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer composites are susceptible to microstructural nonuniformity such as variability in fiber volume fraction (Vf), which can have a profound effect on process-induced residual stress. Until now, this effect of non-uniform Vf distribution has been hardly addressed in the process models. In the present study, we characterized the Vf distribution and accompanying nonuniformity in a unidirectional fiber-reinforced pultruded profile using optical light microscopy. The identified nonuniformity in Vf was subsequently implemented in a mesoscale thermal-chemical-mechanical process model, developed explicitly for the pultrusion process. In our process model, the constitutive material behavior was defined locally with respect to the corresponding fiber volume fraction value in different-sized representative volume elements. The effect of nonuniformity on the temperature and cure degree evolution, and residual stress was analyzed in depth. The results show that the nonuniformity in fiber volume fraction across the cross-section increased the absolute magnitude of the predicted residual stress, leading to a more scattered residual stress distribution. The observed Vf gradient promotes tensile residual stress at the core and compressive residual stress at the outer regions. Consequently, it is concluded that it is essential to take the effects of nonuniformity in fiber distribution into account for residual stress estimations, and the proposed numerical framework was found to be an efficient tool to study this aspect.
