RESUMEN

Microbial nitrogen fixation presents a viable alternative to chemical fertilizers, yet the limited colonization and specificity of naturally occurring nitrogen-fixing microorganisms present significant challenges to their widespread application. In this study, we identified a nitrogen fixation gene cluster (VNnif) in Vibrio natriegens (VN) and tested its nitrogenase activity through the acetylene reduction assay. We investigated the potential utilization of nitrogenase by incorporating the nitrogenase gene cluster from VN into plant growth-promoting rhizosphere bacteria Pseudomonas protegens CHA0 and enhancing its activity to 48.16 nmol C2H2/mg/h through promoter replacement and cluster rearrangement. The engineered strain CHA0-PVNnif was found to positively impact the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana col-0 and Triticum aestivum L. (wheat). This study expanded the role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and provided a research foundation for enhancing nitrogenase activity.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI) usually induces serious health problems. OBJECTIVES: This study attempted to explore protective effects of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on MIRI and the associated mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ischemia/reperfusion of an isolated rat heart (I/R model) and the MIRI model were used in this study. Myocardial infarction was measured with staining with 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC). Ca2+ and troponin T (TnT) concentrations in coronary perfusion fluid were evaluated using the chromatometry method. Ca2+ concentration in cardiomyocytes was determined with detecting Ca2+ fluorescence intensity. The ultrastructure of cardiomyocytes was observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). ß-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) of cardiomyocytes was also determined. RESULTS: The EGCG (I/R+EGCG) significantly reduced myocardial infarction size of isolated rat heart compared to I/R rats (p < 0.05), remarkably increased Ca2+ and decreased TnT concentrations in coronary perfusion fluid of I/R rats compared to the I/R model (p < 0.05), as well as markedly decreased intracellular Ca2+ concentration and promoted NAD+ concentration in cardiomyocytes compared to I/R rats (p < 0.05). It also obviously maintained the mitochondrial structure in cardiomyocytes of I/R rats and improved the ultrastructure of cardiomyocytes of MIRI rats. Lonidamine (LND) treatment (I/R+EGCG+LND group) significantly blocked the effects of EGCG on I/R injury compared to the I/R+EGCG group (p < 0.05). The EGCG (MIRI+EGCG) significantly decreased myocardial infarction size compared to MIRI rats (p < 0.05) and remarkably enhanced Ca2+ and reduced TnT concentrations in the pulmonary artery compared to that of MIRI rats (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The EGCG decreased myocardial infarction size in both I/R models and MIRI models by reducing intracellular Ca2+ concentration, increasing TnT concentration, promoting NAD+ concentration, and improving the ultrastructure of cardiomyocytes.

BACKGROUND: Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been investigated the benefits of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) stimulators in the treatment of heart failure, but a comprehensive evaluation is lacking. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral sGC stimulators (vericiguat and riociguat) in patients with heart failure. METHODS: Studies were searched and screened in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Eligible RCTs were included that reported mortality, the change of EuroQol Group 5-Dmensional Self-report Questionnaire (EQ-5D) US index, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), or serious adverse events (SAEs). Relative risk or weight mean difference (WMD) was estimated using fixed effect model or random effect model. Analysis of sensitivity and publication bias was conducted. RESULTS: Five trials with a total of 1200 patients were included. sGC stimulators had no impact on the mortality (1.25; 95% confidence interval 0.50-3.11) and significantly improved EQ-5D US index (0.04; 95% confidence interval 0.020-0.05). Furthermore, in comparison with control group, NT-proBNP was statistically decreased in riociguat group (-0.78; 95% confidence interval -1.01 to -0.47), but not in vericiguat group (0.04, 95% confidence interval -0.18 to 0.25). There were not obverse differences in SAEs between sGC stimulators and control groups (0.90; 95% confidence interval 0.72-1.12). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggests that sGC stimulators could improve the quality of life in patients with heart failure with good tolerance and safety, but their long-term benefits need to be observed in the future. sGC stimulators are likely to be promising add-on strategies for the treatment of heart failure.

We study the surface plasmon modes in a silver double-nanowire system by employing the eigenmode analysis approach based on the finite element method. Calculated dispersion relations, surface charge distributions, field patterns and propagation lengths of ten lowest energy plasmon modes in the system are presented. These ten modes are categorized into three groups because they are found to originate from the monopole-monopole, dipole-dipole and quadrupole-quadrupole hybridizations between the two wires, respectively. Interestingly, in addition to the well studied gap mode (mode 1), the other mode from group 1 which is a symmetrically coupled charge mode (mode 2) is found to have a larger group velocity and a longer propagation length than mode 1, suggesting mode 2 to be another potential signal transporter for plasmonic circuits. Scenarios to efficiently excite (inject) group 1 modes in the two-wire system and also to convert mode 2 (mode 1) to mode 1 (mode 2) are demonstrated by numerical simulations.

RESUMEN

We propose to use double negative (DNG) metamaterial slabs to build effective super-absorbers and perfect nanodetectors for single divergent sources. We demonstrate by numerical simulations that an absorbing nanoparticle properly placed inside a DNG slab back-covered with a perfect electric conductor or perfect magnetic conductor mirror can absorb up to 100% radiation energy of a single dipole source placed outside the slab. Furthermore, we also show that even the simple DNG slab without any absorbing nanoparticle could be used as a perfect absorber for both plane and divergent beams. The proposed systems may focus the radiation in nanoscale and thus have applications in optical nanodevices for a variety of different purposes.
